<p>Roger Federer's trophy-laden career ended with defeat on Friday, but for once the result hardly mattered as the Swiss maestro headed into retirement with tears in his eyes and cheers ringing in his ears.</p>

<p>With a sellout crowd of 17,500 at London's O2 Arena willing him on, the 20-time Grand Slam champion returned after more than a year away to play alongside Rafa Nadal, the Spaniard with whom he shared one of tennis's most captivating rivalries.</p>

<p>With the clock past midnight, Federer could have sealed victory in the Laver Cup doubles clash when he served at match point in a tense deciding tiebreak, but it was not to be as Americans Jack Sock and Frances Tiafoe ripped up the script.</p>

<p>Sock thumped a forehand winner and sealed a 4-6 7-6 11-9 win for Team World. After a brief moment of stunned silence around the packed arena, the crowd rose to salute the 41-year-old Federer, whose elegance, charisma and sportsmanship has graced tennis and transcended sport during a 24-year career.</p>

EXPLAINED: What is Laver Cup and its format? Everything to know about Roger Federer's farewell event

<p>Roger Federer wants to bring the curtain down on his glittering career by teaming up with long-time rival Rafael Nadal at the Laver Cup in London on Friday. The 20-time Grand Slam winner announced last week that he intended to retire after the three-day tournament at London's 02 arena, which starts on Friday.</p>

<p>Federer, whose most recent competitive match was a loss to Hubert Hurkacz in last year's Wimbledon quarter-finals, has been struggling with a knee problem. The Swiss great confirmed on Wednesday that the final match of his long and illustrious career will be in the doubles on Friday evening.</p>

<p>Italian Matteo Berrettini, the first alternate for the tournament that pits Team Europe against Team World, will then take Federer's place over the weekend. The Swiss great does not yet know whether he will be able to link up with Nadal but said it would be the dream scenario. "Of course, no doubt," he told a packed press conference at the O2. "I mean, I think it could be quite a unique situation, you know, that if it were to happen."</p>

<p>Federer said he and Nadal, 36, had always maintained a respect for each other even as they vied for the biggest trophies in the sport. "For us as well to go through a career that we both have had and to come out on the other side and being able to have a nice relationship I think is maybe a great message as well to not just tennis but sports and maybe even beyond," he said.</p>

<p>"For that reason I think it would be great. I don't know if it's going to happen, but I think it could be obviously a special moment."</p>

<p>Nadal, who holds the record for Grand Slam titles in men's tennis with 22, Novak Djokovic, who has won 21, and three-time major winner Andy Murray are all part of the six-man Team Europe, captained by Bjorn Borg. Their opponents, Team World, skippered by John McEnroe, include Taylor Fritz, Felix Auger-Aliassime and Diego Schwartzman.</p>

I love my career from every angle."</p>

<p>The Swiss said he was happy with his place in the debate over who is the greatest of all time in the men's game even though his tally of Grand Slam titles has been eclipsed by Nadal and Djokovic. "I'm definitely very proud and very happy where I sit," he said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of my big moments of course was winning my 15th slam at Wimbledon, you know, when Pete (Sampras, who had won a then-record 14) was sitting there. Anything after that was a bonus."</p>

<p>He said he said he had no intention of disappearing off the radar despite his looming retirement. "I just wanted to let the fans know I won't be a ghost, you know. It's funny, you know, I talked about Bjorn Borg just before.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"I don't think he returned to Wimbledon for 25 years. That, in a way, hurts every tennis fan. Totally acceptable, his life, his reasons.&nbsp; "But I don't think I'll be that guy and I feel tennis has given me too much. 'The sport has given me everything': Roger Federer wants to stay connected to tennis after retirement

<p>Roger Federer might be forced to miss the upcoming Laver Cup 2022 due to persistent injury concerns and is all set to take a last-minute call on his participation in the tournament. The Swiss legend announced last week he will be retiring from tennis after the Laver Cup - which will be his last official tournament.</p>

<p>Federer has already arrived in London to take part in the event but he might pull out at the last minute depending on his physical condition. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has undergone a series of knee operations in the last few years and is yet to return to optimum fitness level.</p>

<p>His fans can be in for huge disappointment as they were eagerly waiting to get a final glimpse of the Swiss marvel at the Laver Cup. The tournament is set to get underway on September 23 at the O2 Arena in London where Team Europe will take on the Team World.</p>

<p>However, as per Federer's trainer Pierre Paganini, the Swiss legend's participation remains in doubt due to persistent injury issues. "He will probably decide that at the last moment," Paganini told Swiss newspaper Blick.</p>

Roger Federer might be forced to miss the upcoming Laver Cup 2022 due to persistent injury concerns and is all set to take a last-minute call on his participation in the tournament. The Swiss legend announced last week he will be retiring from tennis after the Laver Cup - which will be his last official tournament. Federer has already arrived in London to take part in the event but he might pull out at the last minute depending on his physical condition. The 20-time Grand Slam champion has undergone a series of knee operations in the last few years and is yet to return to optimum fitness level. His fans can be in for huge disappointment as they were eagerly waiting to get a final glimpse of the Swiss marvel at the Laver Cup. The tournament is set to get underway on September 23 at the O2 Arena in London where Team Europe will take on the Team World. However, as per Federer's trainer Pierre Paganini, the Swiss legend's participation remains in doubt due to persistent injury issues. "He will probably decide that at the last moment," Paganini told Swiss newspaper Blick. "He is trained to have as much information as possible about whether it's a good idea or not," he added. Roger Federer doubtful to take part in farewell Laver Cup tournament, will make a last-minute decision

<p>Struggling Naomi Osaka admitted Monday that she had gone through "more down than up" this year as she tries to break out of her slump at her home Pan Pacific Open this week. The former world number one and four-time Grand Slam champion has plummeted to 48 in the women's tennis world rankings after a wretched run that has seen her crash out in the first round of her last three tournaments.</p>

<p>The Japanese 24-year-old has not won a title since last year's Australian Open and has been hampered this season by injury. But Osaka is hoping to right the ship at the WTA event in Tokyo where she is defending champion, albeit from three years ago as the tournament returns for the first time since the coronavirus pandemic. She will face stiff competition from a field that includes US Open semi-finalist Caroline Garcia of France, Wimbledon champion Elena Rybakina of Kazakhstan and Spain's world number four Paula Badosa.</p>

<p>"This year has been not the best year for me but I've learned a lot about myself," Osaka said, adding that she was "happy to be healthy". "Life is ups and downs, and this year was more down than up, but overall I'm pretty happy with where I am now." Osaka has been outside the top 10 all year and endured first-round defeats at both the French and US Opens. She withdrew from Wimbledon with an Achilles injury, after originally considering skipping the tournament because ranking points would not be awarded.</p>

Osaka said she was looking forward to playing in front of Japanese fans again after taking part in last year's Tokyo Olympics behind closed doors, but would have to "trust in my forehand more" to rebuild her confidence after her poor season.&nbsp;</p>

<p>She will begin her campaign against Australia's world number 55 Daria Saville in the&nbsp;first round. "It's really incredible all the stuff she's done for this sport and beyond that. Just watching her as a businesswoman is really cool."</p>

Roger Federer gives classy response to Rafael Nadal's heartfelt message for him on retirement

<p>Roger Federer last played a competitive match during Wimbledon 2021 where Hubert Hurkacz defeated him in the quarter-finals. Since then, the Swiss maestro struggled to&nbsp;remain fit and didn't take part in any further tournaments. Thus, the whole tennis fraternity sensed that the former world number one's retirement was on the cards.</p>

<p>After Serena Williams called it quits with her final appearance in the recently-held US Open, Federer has joined her in the retirement journey with a shocking announcement on Thursday evening (September 15).&nbsp;"As many of you know, the past three years have presented me with challenges in the form of injuries and surgeries. I've worked hard to return to full competitive form. But I also know my body's capacities and limits, and its message to me lately has been clear. I am 41 years old. I have played more than 1,500 matches over 24 years. Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career," tweeted Federer.</p>

<p>Thus, the D-day finally arrived. Many&nbsp;hoped for this day to miraculously never show up&nbsp;but it finally did with Federer -- one of the greatest athletes -- calling it quits after this year's Laver Cup. Following the shock announcement, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with India's legendary player Mahesh Bhupathi -- 12-time Grand Slam champion -- as the veteran lauded the Swiss maestro and spoke on his legacy.</p>

<p>"I think that's what we all wished for (one last shot from Federer before ending his career). Honestly, Roger has been able to excel his career incredibly long. At his age and how physical tennis is, it wasn't meant to be unfortunately," opined Bhupathi.</p>

<p><em><strong>Federer's legacy - Ultimate professional, thorough gentleman &amp; a fan-favourite</strong></em></p>

<p>"Obviously being ultimate professional and a gentleman. Roger would say hello to literally everyone regardless of ranking and status. Very very few of the past champions were ever like that. He was not only a fan-favourite but a player-favourite as well," Bhupathi claimed.</p>

<p><strong><em>What stood out among Federer's records?</em></strong></p>

<p>The 48-year-old Bhupathi opined, "I think it was just the entire package. Once that switch came on after winning his maiden Grand Slam, he was a brat by&nbsp;breaking racquets but one fine day that switched turned on and since then he never set a foot wrong. Whatever he touched, it turned into gold."</p>

<p><em><strong>Is he the GOAT?</strong></em></p>

<p>"Well, a lot of people ask me this. Including me, he will always be a fan favourite. For anyone who understands the game, he will always be up there. But sports statistics don't lie and he finishes at number three (20) -- behind Rafael Nadal (22) and Novak Djokovic (21) in terms of Grand Slam titles. Very hard to call him GOAT if he has a losing record versus his biggest rivals. But we all love him and what he gave to tennis and how he transcended the sport just like Tiger (Woods) did in golf," asserted Bhupathi.</p>

<p><em><strong>Say the name Federer and anyone would say 'tennis player'. Right?</strong></em></p>

<p>"He is once-in-a-generation athlete. We have been very lucky to see him in action. He has played tennis like no one has ever before. Standing on the baseline and hitting half-volley winners year after year. People don't understand how incredibly hard it is," added the Indian legend.</p>

Tennis has treated me more generously than I ever would have dreamt, and now I must recognise when it is time to end my competitive career," tweeted Federer. ❤️ pic.twitter.com/YxtVWrlXIF — Roger Federer (@rogerfederer) September 15, 2022 × Thus, the D-day finally arrived. Many hoped for this day to miraculously never show up but it finally did with Federer -- one of the greatest athletes -- calling it quits after this year's Laver Cup. Following the shock announcement, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with India's legendary player Mahesh Bhupathi -- 12-time Grand Slam champion -- as the veteran lauded the Swiss maestro and spoke on his legacy. "I think that's what we all wished for (one last shot from Federer before ending his career). Honestly, Roger has been able to excel his career incredibly long. At his age and how physical tennis is, it wasn't meant to be unfortunately," opined Bhupathi. Federer's legacy - Ultimate professional, thorough gentleman & a fan-favourite "Obviously being ultimate professional and a gentleman. Roger would say hello to literally everyone regardless of ranking and status. Very very few of the past champions were ever like that. He was not only a fan-favourite but a player-favourite as well," Bhupathi claimed. What stood out among Federer's records? The 48-year-old Bhupathi opined, "I think it was just the entire package. Once that switch came on after winning his maiden Grand Slam, he was a brat by breaking racquets but one fine day that switched turned on and since then he never set a foot wrong. Whatever he touched, it turned into gold." × ALSO READ | Roger Federer announces retirement: Unbelievable milestones in tennis legend's career Is he the GOAT? "Well, a lot of people ask me this. But we all love him and what he gave to tennis and how he transcended the sport just like Tiger (Woods) did in golf," asserted Bhupathi. Say the name Federer and anyone would say 'tennis player'. Right? "He is once-in-a-generation athlete. We have been very lucky to see him in action. He has played tennis like no one has ever before. Standing on the baseline and hitting half-volley winners year after year. People don't understand how incredibly hard it is," added the Indian legend. 😢 pic.twitter.com/CGan3MxInn — Mahesh Bhupathi (@Maheshbhupathi) September 15, 2022 × Federer won 103 singles titles in a career spanning 24 years. The 41-year-old ended with a staggering 20 Grand Slam titles and will sign off after this month's Laver Cup; also featuring Nadal, Djokovic, etc. Needless to say, it will be a sellout with fans coming from all corners to witness the great Federer in action for one last time.

I have always looked up to you and admired you. Our paths were always so similar, so much the same. You inspired countless millions and millions of people - including me - and we will never forget. I applaud you and look forward to all that you do in the future. Welcome to the retirement club. And thank you for being you @rogerfederer,” Serena wrote on Instagram. Very very few of the past champions were ever like that. He was not only a fan-favourite but a player-favourite as well." Bhupathi added, "He is a once-in-a-generation athlete. We have been very lucky to see him in action. He has played tennis as no one has ever before. Standing on the baseline and hitting half-volley winners year after year. People don't understand how incredibly hard it is." Federer will be in action in this month's Laver Cup -- also featuring his closest rivals Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. The 41-year-old — a winner of 20 Grand Slam titles — has won 103 singles titles in an illustrious career spanning 24 years.

<p>Keeping his frequent run-ins with injury issues, it was only a matter of time before Federer called time on his storied career in professional sports. In the aftermath of Federer's shock announcement,&nbsp;WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with former professional tennis player and commentator, Vijay Amritraj, who expressed a similar sentiment, asserting that his retirement couldn't have been delayed any longer owing to his advancing age.</p>

<p><strong>You mentioned Djokovic, you mentioned Rafael Nadal, well, I'm going to attempt to go straight to the GOAT debate.</strong></p>

<p>"We can talk about this all day long, but at the end of the day, we're just fortunate to have seen three of the greatest players of all time play in the same era. <p>"And so, obviously, Federer got there first, Nadal came along and caught him, then went ahead a little bit, then Djokovic came ahead and caught them both, and then so on and so forth. <p>"We started talking a bit and as we were getting off she introduced herself and she said, 'I followed your career over the years, always admired you so much.' Which was very kind of her.
