Frances Tiafoe of the United States produced the performance of a lifetime to send Rafael Nadal crashing out of the US Open in a stunning fourth round upset on Monday.

Tiafoe, who had only reached one major championship quarter-final in his career before, shattered Nadal's hopes of adding to his record collection of 22 Grand Slam singles titles with a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 victory.

A packed Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd roared in delight as the 24-year-old 22nd seed bombarded Nadal with 18 aces and 49 winners to seal victory in 3hr 34min.

The win sends Tiafoe into a last eight showdown against Russian ninth seed Andrey Rublev on Wednesday.

"I don't even know what to say right now," Tiafoe said after his superb victory. "I'm beyond happy, I'm almost in tears.I can't believe it.

"He's definitely one of the greatest of all time. I played unbelievable tennis today but yeah - I really don't know what happened."

Tiafoe, the son of immigrants from Sierra Leone who began playing tennis as a four-year-old when his father worked as a live-in caretaker at a tennis facility in Maryland, had never gone further than the fourth round at the US Open in seven previous appearances.

"When I first came on the scene a lot of people had expectations of me of how I would do and stuff, but I wasn't ready for it. Mentally I wasn't mature enough for those moments," Tiafoe said.

"But these last couple of years I've been able to put my head down and develop."

Nadal paid tribute to Tiafoe's performance, and admitted he had struggled to cope with the American's tactic of moving him around the court.

'I played a bad match'

"I played a bad match and he played a good match. At the end that's it, no?," Nadal said.

"Tennis is a sport of position a lot of times, no? If not, you need to be very, very quick and very young. I am not in that moment anymore," the 36-year-old said.

In two previous matches against Nadal, Tiafoe had never taken a single set off the Spanish legend.

However he set the tone for magical performance early in Monday's match, grabbing the first with a break of serve to go 4-3 up in the first before taking the set.

Nadal hit back to level in the second set as Tiafoe nervily double-faulted on set point.

But the American regrouped superbly in the third, sending Nadal scampering across the baseline repeatedly with some pinpoint groundstrokes into the corners.

He broke for a 4-3 lead once more and then held for 5-3. After Nadal held to close the gap, Tiafoe served for the set and clinched a 2-1 lead with an ace after a masterful running forehand winner down the line had taken him to match point.

The turning point in a pivotal fourth set came soon after Nadal had swept into a 3-1 lead, roaring with delight after breaking Tiafoe and seemingly poised to force a fifth set.

Tiafoe however broke back to cut the deficit, cleverly moving Nadal out of position before hammering a forehand into the corner to make it 3-2.

Nadal almost struck back immediately in the next game however, earning two break points at 15-40.

But Tiafoe responded magnificently with four straight points to hold with an ace to level the set at 3-3.

From there, Tiafoe's momentum proved irresistible and he broke once more for a 4-3 and then held serve after blasting his 18th ace of the game for 5-3, before scoring another break to clinch victory.

American teenager Coco Gauff used her superior speed to overcome a second-set deficit and pull off a thrilling 7-5 7-5 win over China's Zhang Shuai to reach the quarter-finals of the U.S. Open for the first time.

With Serena Williams' loss on Friday night likely signaling the end of her legendary career, American tennis fans are eager to see someone emerge in her place and many have put their hopes on the amiable, hard-serving Gauff.

"It feels insane," Gauff said in an on-court interview after sealing the win to set up a showdown with in-form Frenchwoman Caroline Garcia on Tuesday.

"I mean, Ashe Stadium chanting my name, I was trying not to smile on the bench on the last changeover, I was trying to stay in the moment. But in my head I was smiling.

"I can't believe you guys were chanting like that. It's crazy."

In a battle between the youngest player left in the draw, the 18-year-old Gauff, and the oldest, the 33-year-old Zhang, it was the Chinese player who looked sharper at the outset, breaking for a 2-0 lead in the first set.

But 12th seed Gauff kept her poise to break back and fired a two-handed backhand winner to claim the first set and electrify the supportive crowd.

Zhang, a human backboard content to extend rallies from the baseline, grabbed a 5-3 lead in the second when she broke Gauff with a backhand winner of her own.

But Gauff again showed maturity beyond her years, winning the last four games highlighted by an electrifying point in the final game where she used her astonishing speed to slide from corner to corner to elicit an error from Zhang.

The crowd roared in approval after the point and Zhang covered her ears to block out the sound, which was amplified by the closed roof on Arthur Ashe Stadium due to rain.

World number one Daniil Medvedev bowed out of the US Open 2022 edition, losing to Australia's Nick Krygios in the fourth round at the Arthur Ashe Stadium. In a pulsating battle, Medvedev went down to the Wimbledon 2022 runners-up as he lost 6-7 (11), 6-3, 3-6, 2-6. Given the Russian was the defending champion, his exit has surely made heads turn as the ongoing edition will now surely see a new winner in men's singles.

Well, Medvedev's exit not only means the men's singles category will see a new champion this time around at the US Open, but the Russian will also lose his top spot in the ATP rankings. Thus, a new world number one is also on the cards following the 26-year-old's early exit. Spain's Rafael Nadal is a favourite to reclaim the top spot as he remains in the race to bag the top prize in the last Grand Slam of the year. As per the ATP website, young guns Carlos Alcaraz or Casper Ruud can also be crowned the No. 1 spot if they go the distance and clinch the title.

World number one Iga Swiatek dug her way out of a second set hole to notch a 6-3 6-4 win over American Lauren Davis and reach the fourth round of the U.S. Open for the second straight year.

The French Open champion came out sharp and fired an unreturnable serve out wide to capture the first set before falling behind 4-1 in the second as Davis raised her level.

Despite the deficit the feisty Pole stubbornly refused to drop her first set of the tournament, winning a tense 16-shot rally to set up break points at 4-4, which she converted when Davis whacked a backhand into the net.

In the end, Swiatek's superior serving and relentless defense carried the day against Davis, who plays a similar but less potent brand of tennis as Swiatek.

"She played totally differently than any other player. She played very smart. I'm pretty happy at the end that I could put balls in.

"I'm trying to enjoy every match even when it's not perfect. Just trying to go for it. Trying to find solutions in every situation."

Swiatek went on a blistering 37-match winning streak earlier this year to claim titles in Roland Garros, Doha, Indian Wells, Miami and Rome but cooled off this summer, losing four matches during the hard-court season.

So far in New York she has put to rest any questions about her form and will be the heavy favourite when she takes on Germany's Jule Niemeier on Monday after the Wimbledon quarterfinalist upset China's Qinwen Zheng 6-4 7-6(5) to reach the Round of 16.

Rafa Nadal handed old foe Richard Gasquet a Flushing Meadows mugging on Saturday, walloping the Frenchman 6-0 6-1 7-5 to ease into the U.S. Open fourth round.

Losing to Nadal is nothing new for Gasquet, who is now 0-18 against the Spaniard but seldom over the years has the Frenchman absorbed such a beating.

Arriving at Flushing Meadows having played just a single match since pulling out of Wimbledon semifinals with an abdominal injury, Nadal has been in a race to find form.

After two tough four-set wins - over Australian wild card Rinky Hijikata in his opener and Italy's Fabio Fognini in the second round - Nadal said there were signs of progress against Gasquet.

But the 36-year-old acknowledged he will need much more improvement if he is to challenge for a fifth U.S. Open title, which would tie him with Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer and Pete Sampras for the most in the Open Era.

Up next for Nadal is American hope Frances Tiafoe, who advanced with a 7-6(7) 6-4 6-4 win over Argentine 14th seed Diego Schwartzman.

"My best match in the tournament, easy," Nadal said of Saturday's win. "An important improvement. But I need to keep going.

"I know this is the right moment to make an improvement if I want to keep having chances to keep going on the tournament. Today was an improvement. I need another important improvement for the next day."

Nadal is always a favourite in New York but such was the second seed's dominance that even the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd tried to lift Gasquet's spirit as he fell behind 6-0 3-0.

When Gasquet finally held serve in the 10th game, the crowd gave a mighty roar as the 36-year-old French veteran raised his arms into the air in celebration.

The beating, however, quickly resumed with Nadal sweeping the next five games to take the second set and a 2-0 lead in the third.

At that point Nadal took his foot off the gas and when Gasquet broke the 22-times Grand Slam winner to level the third set at 2-2, it earned him a standing ovation.

It took a few games for Nadal to get back in gear, but the outcome was never in doubt, the Spaniard collecting his seventh break of the match to go up 6-5 then coolly holding serve to clinch a convincing win.

US Open 2022: Ruthless Rafael Nadal thrashes Richard Gasquet to storm into fourth round

American teenage sensation Coco Gauff revealed she always roots for Australian ace Nick Kyrgios as she backed him to go far in the ongoing US Open 2022 and win the title. Kyrgios, who is gunning for his maiden Grand Slam title at the US Open, has had a tremendous season so far and has already booked his spot in the 4th round at Flushing Meadows.

Kyrgios defeated America JJ Wolf comfortably 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 on Saturday to storm into the third round of the competition where he will be up against defending champion Daniil Medvedev on Monday. Kyrgios had gotten the better of Medvedev in Montreal last month after the Russian had knocked him out of the Australian Open earlier this year.

The Australian maverick has been playing some of the best tennis of his career this year and will fancy his chances against the world number one on Monday. Ahead of his blockbuster meeting with Medvedev, Gauff said she will be rooting for the Australian and tipped him to go far in the tournament.

“If he keeps it up, I think he can go far. He can win the tournament. We all know he has the ability to. He was close at Wimbledon," said 18-year-old Gauf, who herself has qualified for the Round of 16 in the US Open and will be taking on China's Zhang Shuai next.

“I always, always root for him, no matter who he’s playing, to be honest," she added.

Gauff said she can never dislike Kyrgios while opening up about the great bond she shares with the Australian. She insisted she might not agree with a few things he does on the court but Kyrgios has always stood out to her as a person ever since he first met her at the Miami Open when Gauff was just 13 and spent 30 minutes with her chatting about the game.

“I know there’s things on the court that he does that people don’t agree with. I probably don’t agree with some things," said Gauff.

“Overall, I think he’s a nice person. At least he’s always been to me. I remember I first hit with him, he probably doesn’t remember this, I was 13 years old at Miami Open. He finished his practice, hit with me for, like, 30 minutes.

“It’s just things like that that stands out for me. That’s why I feel like I can never dislike him," she added.

'I always root for him': Coco Gauff backs Australian ace Nick Kyrgios to win US Open 2022

Serena Williams went down fighting against Australia's Ajla Tomljanovic in the third round of US Open 2022 on Saturday (September 03). The defeat against Tomljanovic is almost certainly Williams' last at the US Open and could also be a career-ending one as she looks to 'evolve away' from the sport.

One of the greatest tennis players of all time, Williams has been an epitome of courage and grit throughout her glorious career. She was gunning for a record 24th Grand Slam title at the US Open this year but ended up falling short eventually as the 40-year-old looked far from her best on the court.

Williams started off well against Tomlijanovic but ended up losing the first game 7-5 before fighting back to take the second game 6-7 (4/7) as she once again brought to fore her indomitable spirit in front of a packed crowd at the Flushing Meadows. However, the Australian proved too good for her in the third game as she won 6-1 to hand Williams the final defeat of her US Open career.

When asked if she would reconsider retirement and if there is a chance Williams will return to the court once again, the American legend remained coy on her future.

"Will you reconsider?" Williams was asked on the court after her loss against Tomljanovic.

"I don't think so, but you never know," replied the 23-time Grand Slam winner with tears in her eyes.

It was an emotional farewell for Williams, who is unarguably one of the best players to have graced the tennis court. She has won the coveted US Open six times in her career with her first title at home coming back in 1999. Williams said her tennis career has been the most exciting journey she has been on in her life.

"It's been a fun ride," she said. "It's been the most incredible ride and journey I've ever been on, I mean, in my life.

'You never know': Serena Williams on reconsidering retirement after crashing out of US Open 2022

A defiant Serena Williams bid an emotional goodbye to the U.S. Open with a third-round loss to Ajla Tomljanovic on Friday, in what may have been the last singles match of her glittering career.

Defeat has always been hard to swallow for the fiercely competitive Williams and no doubt the 7-5 6-7 (4) 6-1 loss to the 46th ranked Australian stung her to her core.

But after a joyous run into the third round there was no shame in a loss to the gritty Tomljanovic, allowing the 23-times Grand Slam winner to exit with dignity intact and head held high.

Her three matches, highlighted by a second-round win over world number two Anett Kontaveit, were a gift to her fans, the relentless never surrender attitude that made her tennis' dominant player for over two decades on display right until the very final point.

"Clearly I'm still capable," Williams told reporters. "But it takes a lot more than that.

"I'm ready to be a mom, explore a different version of Serena.

"Technically in the world I'm still super young, so I want to have a little bit of a life while I'm still walking. I have such a bright future ahead of me."

Always up for a fight, the 40-year-old came out swinging, forcing Tomljanovic to go the distance. The Australian needed six match points to deliver the knockout punch and bring an end to an engrossing three-plus-hour slugfest.

Williams had signalled her intention to retire in a Vogue article in early August, saying she was "evolving away from tennis" but never confirming the U.S. Open as her final event.

Given the opportunity to put speculation to rest that the U.S. Open may not be the end, Williams left the door open just a crack.

Asked whether she might be tempted to return to tennis, she responded: “I don’t think so but you never know.”

"I always did love Australia, though," she later told reporters, hinting at a tilt at the Australian Open in January.

For fans, however, the message was clear, the U.S. Open would be where Williams would take her final bow.

The raucous New York crowd that had backed her from the very beginning and over the years, fuelling her runs to six U.S. Open titles, was in her corner once again but could not lift her to one more win.

Tomljanovic, who is yet to win a WTA Tour tournament, appeared to have had little chance against Williams, winner of 73 career titles, but would not be intimidated.

Before stepping out onto center court Tomljanovic paused for a moment and touched the plaque quoting Billie Jean King that hangs at the entrance: “Pressure is a Privilege”.

Despite an electric atmosphere the match got off to a sluggish start with the players trading breaks before settling in. Williams had looked to seize control when she broke Tomljanovic to go ahead 5-3 and serving for the set.

But with Williams two points from a 1-0 lead Tomljanovic dug in, breaking back and sweeping four straight games to steal the set, leaving the stadium stunned.

A defiant Williams, as she has done so many times, lifted her game hitting back in ruthless style in the second and breaking the Australian twice on the way to 4-0.

Playing her fourth match in five nights, Williams suddenly seemed to run out of gas and Tomljanovic, showing some steel of her own, pulled level at 5-5 as the set moved to a tie-break.

Everyone inside Arthur Ashe, now on their feet, knew Williams was not going to exit without a fight, and running on fumes dug into her reserves to take the tie-break 7-4.

Williams had the crowd roaring again when she broke Tomljanovic to start the third but simply had nothing left in the tank. The Australian put the former-world number on the ropes, storming through the next four games for a 4-1 lead.

But Williams was not going to hand Tomljanovic the win, she would have to earn it, needing six match points to get the job done.

Asked whether she might be tempted to return to tennis, she responded: “I don’t think so but you never know.” "I always did love Australia, though," she later told reporters, hinting at a tilt at the Australian Open in January. Also Read: Serena Williams: A flawed genius but a perfectly humane human A defiant Williams, as she has done so many times, lifted her game hitting back in ruthless style in the second and breaking the Australian twice on the way to 4-0.

US Open 2022: Serena Williams bids emotional farewell after 3rd-round loss against Ajla Tomljanovic

While Serena Williams is perhaps one of, if not the most, accomplished players in the international tennis circuit, her legacy must not be defined by the myriad of accomplishments that she has managed to achieve on the court.

Although a series of extremely impressive performances have earned Williams a myriad of laurels across her career, including four Olympic gold medals, 16 Grand Slam doubles titles and 23 Grand Slam singles titles, she is so much more than just an accomplished professional athlete.

As a young black woman hailing from Compton, California, Serena Williams entered the sport as an outlier. She failed to fit the traditional norms that had existed in the sport way before she came along.

The fact that Williams went on to absolutely redefine the sport with her consistently awe-inspiring performances is all the more impressive.

Williams recently declared that she intended to call time on her tennis career, regarding the US Open as her swansong. She most recently featured in a match against Australia’s Ajla Tomljanovic, which marked the final singles match of her career as she suffered a 5-7, 7-6, 1-6 loss.

However, she took on Tomljanovic in a way, which was congruent with the manner she has participated in every match over the course of her storied career, fierce competition.

The word fierce perfectly describes the American icon as she has exhibited the trait umpteen times on the court. However, she has also managed to display the same off the court, being one of the few players who juggled being a mother and a professional player so perfectly.

Although it is safe to say that the tennis court will never see her like again, her story is such that it will inspire thousands of aspiring players to try to live up to the lofty standards that she set throughout her career.

While Williams seems to have stepped away from the sport, it might not be for good as she expressed interest in making her way back to active contention at some point in the future should she feel inclined to do so.

Serena Williams' unmatched legacy to stand the test of time long after her retirement

Defending champion Daniil Medvedev cruised into the fourth round of the U.S. Open with a straightforward 6-4 6-2 6-2 victory over Chinese qualifier Wu Yibing on Friday to set up a blockbuster clash with Australia's Nick Kyrgios.

The Russian blazed past Stefan Kozlov and Arthur Rinderknech in the last two rounds and looked every bit the champion again, as he fired 12 aces and converted six of 12 break points to comfortably dispatch his 22-year-old opponent.

"If you ask me what I could improve, I don't see many things," Medvedev said of his title defence. "Maybe a little bit less double-faults, but that's if we're trying to dig somewhere. If not, high-level match.

"If I continue this way, have good opportunities to do something big. But the next match is not easy. Going to try to recover well and be 100% for the next one."

Medvedev's win in front of an emotional Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd following Serena Williams' loss to Ajla Tomljanovic meant he has reached the round of 16 at Flushing Meadows for the fourth straight year.

Wu, who became the first Chinese man in U.S. Open history to reach the third round, was plagued by several unforced errors in the clash as Medvedev prevailed in an hour and 55 minutes.

After sealing a closely contested first set, Medvedev broke early to race ahead 5-1 in the next and closed it out in style to take full control of the contest.

The third set followed a similar pattern as Wu crumbled under the relentless pressure, with Medvedev staying on course to become the first player to win consecutive U.S. Open titles since Roger Federer's run of five between 2004 and 2008.

But a defeat to Kyrgios in the next round would see Medvedev lose his number one ranking to Rafa Nadal after the tournament.

"We've played great matches. All have been quite tight on the scoreboard," said Medvedev, who has lost three of his four previous meetings with Kyrgios, including the last one in Montreal less than a month ago.

"It's 3-1 to him but I'll try to do better this time and it'll be a great match for people to watch."

Medvedev said he was aware of what he needed to do on Sunday against the temperamental Australian, who is playing the best tennis of his career, having finished runner-up at Wimbledon and winning in Washington, D.C. in the lead-up to U.S. Open.

"I don't think we are friends. When I say 'friends', we haven't been to the bar together," Medvedev said with a smile.

"I feel like we respect each other a lot. On the court also we never really had any fight or anything, which can change any moment. We are both quite electric. You never know what's going to happen in the future.

US Open 2022: Daniil Medvedev's title defence meets Nick Kyrgios hurdle in fourth round

Tensions flared up in the US Open 2022 on Thursday as Ukraine's Marta Kostyuk refused to shake hands with Belarusian Victoria Azarenka after their second-round clash. Azarenka defeated Kostyuk 6-2,6-2 in straight games before the duo ditched the traditional handshake to just tap their racquets.

While she ditched Azarenka, Kostyuk was seen shaking hands with the chair umpire and other officials. The acrimony over Russia's invasion of Ukraine was felt on the court at the US Open after Kostyuk's action. This is not the first time, the Ukrainian tennis star has taken a stand against Russian and Belarusian athletes.

Explaining her refusal to shake hands with Azarenka, Kostyuk said she didn't know a single tennis player from Russia or Belarus who publicly criticised their governments for the war in Ukraine.

“It was my choice, I feel like I don’t know any single person who condemned the war publicly, and the actions of their government, so I don’t feel like I can support this. Azarenka also expressed her thoughts in her post-match presser where she said she is “open any time to listen, to try to understand, to sympathize,” if Kostyuk wanted to speak to her. The Belarusian also said she believes empathy is really important in the present world.

Rafa Nadal overcame a horrid start and a bloody nose to beat Fabio Fognini 2-6 6-4 6-2 6-1 and reach the third round of the U.S Open on Thursday.

The veteran Italian came out flying to build a set and a 4-2 lead as Nadal struggled to find a rhythm, raising the possibility of an upset like the one Fognini memorably pulled off against the Spaniard at Arthur Ashe Stadium seven years ago.

Nadal steadied the ship and looked to be cruising to the finish line when, while leading 3-0 in the fourth set, he was struck on the nose by his racket when it hit the court and bounced back sharply.

That led to a medical time out where the 22-time Grand Slam champion lay on his back with his eyes closed as a pink bandage was applied to stop the bleeding.

Nadal regrouped and with the backing of the partisan crowd sealed the win on Fognini's 60th unforced error to end the ugly affair in which the players combined for 15 breaks of serve and 11 double faults.

"For more than one-and-a-half hours I was not competing, it was one of my worst starts ever," Nadal said in an on-court interview.

"When this happens, hopefully not too often, you have to stay positive and stay patient. The match is long."

US Open 2022: Rafael Nadal overcomes early scare and bloody nose to reach third round

Teenager Carlos Alcaraz fended off a late push from veteran Argentine Federico Coria to emerge with a 6-2 6-1 7-5 win on Thursday to reach the U.S. Open third round where he will face American Jenson Brooksby.

The young Spaniard used his all-court speed and punishing forehand to win the final 10 points of the first set and broke Coria's serve to open the second to cruise to a 2-0 sets lead.

Coria refused to go down without a fight and pushed Alcaraz in a marathon game at 4-4 in the third set.

But the third seed, who saved 14 of the 15 break points he faced in the match, rifled two unreturnable serves to get out of trouble and sealed the win with a two-handed backhand for his 46th victory of the year.

"It's been a great year for me but it's not the end of the year," Alcaraz said.

"I am very happy to be the player with the most victories but I have to look forward and go for it."

Next up Alcaraz is a meeting with Brooksby who beat Cincinnati Open champion and 25th seed Borna Coric 6-4 7-6(10) 6-1 earlier in the day.

"I was proud of my mental resolve to be able to save a lot of set points like that in a row and just stay in the present," Brooksby told reporters.

"I was able to focus on what I have been working on, and to see that come through today is a great feeling."

Brooksby's emphatic shouts of "Come on!" got under Coric's skin leading the Croatian to tell the chair umpire that while he respected the 21-year-old's fight, "It's a bit too much, it's every point".

In what can only be described as an extremely unusual occurrence, Rafael Nadal recently experienced a self-inflicted mishap that saw him walk away with a bleeding nose during his most recent outing on the court in the US Open.

Nadal was cruising past Fabio Fognini, 3-0 up in the fourth set of their second-round clash of the US Open, when the unfortunate incident transpired. The bridge of his nose suffered the major brunt of the blow after his racquet ricocheted off the ground on a follow-through of a shot.

Serena Williams marches on in US Open, beats No.2 seed Anett Kontaveit

Former champion Andy Murray reached the US Open third round for the first time in six years on Wednesday with a four-set win over American wildcard Emilio Nava. Murray, who famously ended Britain's 76-year wait for a men's Grand Slam title when he won the US Open in 2012, came out on top 5-7, 6-3, 6-1, 6-0.

"Physically this is the best I've felt in the last few years," said 35-year-old Murray. "My movement is by far the best it's been in a long time. I'm getting closer to where I want to be and hopefully I can have a deep run here." Nava, ranked 203 in the world, claimed a gruelling 84-minute first set with an impressive crosscourt forehand winner.

But the 20-year-old, who had needed five sets to see off John Millman in the first round, eventually ran out of steam, winning just four more games and ending the contest with 56 unforced errors. "He was dictating the points in the first set," said Murray of his opponent. "But then I was hitting it deeper and was able to control the points. "He played his first five-set match in the first round and that can be very tough, I think his level dropped but he will have a bright future."

Murray last made the third round in 2016 on his way to the quarter-finals. If he is to progress further, he may have to get past world number 14 Matteo Berrettini, a semi-finalist in New York in 2019. Second seed Rafael Nadal overcame an early scare to down 21-year-old Australian wildcard Rinky Hijikata 4-6, 6-2, 6-3, 6-3 on Tuesday in his first appearance at the U.S. Open after winning in 2019.

Playing in only his second match after pulling out of Wimbledon with an abdominal injury, the Spaniard had speculated whether he was ready for US Open and seemed to confirm those fears as he struggled on the return in the first set.

Hijikata incredibly broke the 22-times major winner with a crisp overhead shot in the seventh game of his Grand Slam debut but it was Goliath who got the momentum over David under the bright lights of Arthur Ashe Stadium, as the fighter Nadal charged through the first three games of the second set.

Nadal improved in virtually every respect as his opponent's form deteriorated, dropping just one of his first-serve points with few mistakes, as Hijikata racked up a dozen unforced errors and dropped his serve in the final game.

Thriving on familiar territory, the four-time Flushing Meadows winner Nadal never faced a break in the third set and broke Hijikata to love in the fifth game of the final set before recovering from 0-40 in the eighth to hold his own serve.

Naomi Osaka's hopes of a third US Open title were dashed in the first round itself on Tuesday as the Japanese star slumped to a straight sets loss against Danielle Collins.

Four-time Grand Slam champion Osaka, a winner at Flushing Meadows in 2018 and 2020, was beaten 7-6 (7/5), 6-3 by 19th-seeded American Collins in a battle of two big hitters. Collins, the finalist at this year's Australian Open, now advances to a second-round clash with Spain's Cristina Bucsa.

The 28-year-old right-hander from Florida will head into that assignment brimming with confidence after showing great composure to put away Osaka at Arthur Ashe Stadium. No one was more surprised at the victory than Collins, who had skipped tournaments in Silicon Valley and Toronto to allow herself time to recuperate from a neck injury.

"I'm just really still kind of speechless in a way because I took the summer off," Collins said. "To kind of come out here, play a tough opponent first round, someone that's won two Grand Slams here, it's not easy."

"Just really over the moon about being able to get through this first round because I don't think most players want to face Naomi in the first round."

Serena Williams dropped a major retirement hint last month, in an article on Vogue, by revealing that she is evolving away from the game. Williams, a winner of 23 Grand Slams, entered the US Open 2022 edition -- which is considered to be her last appearance at a major event -- and received a rousing welcome on the court while facing Danka Kovinic on Tuesday (August 30).

Coming on court at the Grand Slam event at the iconic Arthur Ashe Stadium, Serena was welcomed by a jam-packed crowd which also included her daughter Olympia. As soon as she entered the court, she was lauded by the crowd who came in large numbers to cheer for the American superstar. It is to be noted that the 40-year-old Serena had won her first-ever Grand Slam in the US Open -- back in 1999 -- and, hence, she will like to sign off on a high infront of the home crowd.

"Now that is an entrance,@serenawilliams," the official Twitter handle of the US Open shared the special moment of Serena's entry, where her daughter was thrilled to see her mother and took pictures of her arrival at the Arthur Ashe Stadium.

Talking about Serena's first-round clash, she outclassed Kovinic 6-3, 6-3 to storm ahead in the showpiece event. After the match, she made a big claim on her retirement.

"I`ve always just got to do the best that I can," Williams told the audience during her on-court interview. "I feel so comfortable on this court and in front of everyone here. When I step out on the court I just want to do the best that I can do on that particular day," she said. Further, Serena was asked during her post-match news conference if this US Open would be her last tournament, and the former World No. 1 said "I`ve been pretty vague about it. I`m going to stay vague because you never know," according to the Washington Post.

Former US Open champion Bianca Andreescu slammed Nike after suffering a wardrobe gaffe during her round 1 clash against Harmony Tan in US Open 2022 on Monday. Andreescu was left in a spot of bother after windy conditions on the court forced her to approach the chair umpire for an extra break to change her dress.

The Canadian star went on to defeat Tan 6-0, 3-6, 6-1 to progress to the second round with a comfortable victory. However, the game was marred with drama as continuous winds ket blowing Andreescu's skirt away and left her disgruntled as she asked the umpire if she can go and change.

However, before leaving the court to change her dress, Andreescu confirmed the break would not be counted as the one allotted bathroom break to each player. As she approached the umpire, she was heard blaming Nike for her 'bad dress' calling it the sponsor's fault.

"Will this not count as one of my changeovers? I mean it's not my fault, it's Nike's fault," she told the chair umpire.

"This dress is so, so bad... I need to go (change), this is really bad," she explained.

Andy Murray powered into the second round of the U.S. Open with a comfortable 7-5 6-3 6-3 win over Argentine Francisco Cerundolo on Monday, as the former world number one rolled back the years at the scene of his first Grand Slam triumph a decade ago.

The 35-year-old Scot, who has battled various injuries in recent years, raced to a 5-2 lead early in the match but dropped his level slightly before edging a tight first set and breaking quickly in the next to put 24th seed Cerundolo under pressure on a sweltering hot Arthur Ashe Stadium court.

"It is obviously nice any time, especially in those conditions and early on in a slam to get through in straight sets," said Murray. "He's a top player, it was a good win for me.

"Mentally it's not easy going into a five-set match in those conditions after the way the last few weeks have been for me, and I did well.

"I did well physically and mentally to put that to the back of my mind and find a way to get through."
