The Australian Open is the next big event which will take place in the beginning of 2023. In the last edition of the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic made heads turn when he was deported back home for not being Covid vaccinated. The Serbian was imposed with a three-year ban on seeking an Australian visa but recently shared a massive update on his chances of featuring in the Aus Open next year.

“When it comes to Australia, there are some positive signs, but unofficially,” 35-year-old Djokovic told Sportal. He further opined, "We are communicating through my lawyers in Australia. In fact, they are communicating with the authorities in charge of my case. I hope to have an answer in the next few weeks – whatever that answer might be, but of course I am hoping for a positive one – so that I have enough time to prepare for the start of the season, if that start is going to happen in Australia."

Djokovic, nine-time champion in Melbourne, remains focused on the future and has clearly stated that he does not want to dwell on the past. “I really want to go there, I am over what happened this year and I just want to play tennis, it is what I do best. Australia has always been the place where I have played my best tennis, the results speak for themselves, so I am always extra motivated to go there. This time even more, so. “I am hoping for a positive answer," the former world number one added.

It remains to be seen if Djokovic's visa ban gets lifted and he leaves for Australia for the mega event. As of now, nothing is final but Djokovic's recent update does give hope to his ardent fans ahead of the big-ticket event Down Under.

'There are some positive signs, but unofficially' - Novak Djokovic on playing 2023 Australian Open

Simona Halep's former coach Darren Cahill said there is "no chance" the two-times Grand Slam champion had knowingly taken a prohibited substance after she was provisionally suspended for failing a drugs test.

Halep, ranked ninth in the world, was tested during the U.S. Open and both her A and B samples confirmed the presence of roxadustat, the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) said on Friday. Cahill, who worked with Halep for six years and guided her to her first Grand Slam title - the 2018 French Open - said the Romanian's integrity was "faultless".

"Firstly, and most importantly, there is NO chance Simona knowingly or purposely took any substance on the banned list. None. Zero," Cahill wrote in a post on Instagram. "She is an athlete that stressed about anything prescribed to her by a medical professional (which was rarely), or about any supplement that she used or considered ... "We both believe in the ITIA testing program and would often discuss the number of times she was tested, both at tournaments and randomly. She did it without complaint, with the reassurance of knowing other athletes were being tested just as frequently."

Former world number one Halep, who also won Wimbledon in 2019, described the ban as the "biggest shock of her life" and denied knowingly taking any banned substance. "Due process will now follow to reveal answers to many questions. As Simona said, the hardest match of her life starts now," Cahill added. "I believe in her. I always have and can honestly say never more than right now on this particular issue."

Halep's suspension means that she cannot compete in or attend any sanctioned events organised by the governing bodies of tennis.

Simona Halep's former coach comes in her defence over failed drugs test

Romanian tennis star Simona Halep has been provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency (ITIA) for doping. A sample given by the former world no.1 during the US Open in August this year returned positive for a banned substance - Roxadustat.

Halep's sample (divided into Sample A ad B) was analysed and Sample A was found to be containing FG-4592 (Roxadustat), which is listed as a prohibited substance by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA). The ITIA has confirmed the Romanian tennis star will be provisionally suspended from taking part in any form of competitive tennis under Article 7.12.1 of the 2022 Tennis Anti-Doping Programme (TADP).

Halep was knocked out from the first round at the US Open after she went down against Ukrainian qualifier Daria Snigur, who was ranked 124th at the time.

“The player exercised their right to request that the B sample was analysed, which confirmed the finding in the A sample. While provisionally suspended, the player is ineligible to compete in or attend any sanctioned tennis events organised by the governing bodies of the sport,” the ITIA said in a statement.

Coco Gauff qualified for the WTA Finals for the first time on Wednesday, along with French player Caroline Garcia, who will be making her second appearance in the event. Gauff, 18, and Garcia join world number one Iga Swiatek, Ons Jabeur and Jessica Pegula in the singles draw for the finals in Fort Worth, Texas from October 31 to November 7. Gauff will also play in the doubles with partner Pegula, making them the first Americans to take part in the WTA Finals in both singles and doubles since Serena and Venus Williams in 2009.

At 18 years, 239 days old at the end of the event, Gauff will be the youngest to take part since Maria Sharapova reached the semi-finals in 2005, aged 18 and 208 days. World number one Iga Swiatek captured her 11th career WTA title and her eighth of the year on Sunday by outlasting 77th-ranked Donna Vekic in the San Diego Open final. Three-time Grand Slam champion Swiatek defeated the 26-year-old Croatian 6-3, 3-6, 6-0 for her WTA-best 64th match victory of 2022.

"It was a really tight match and pretty long," Swiatek said. "We felt the intensity for sure. At the end I wanted to be the one who played the last ball in." Swiatek took her prior titles this year at the US and French Opens as well as Qatar, Indian Wells, Miami, Stuttgart and Rome.

The 21-year-old Polish star bounced back in her ninth championship match of the year after losing last week's final at Ostrava to Czech Barbora Krejcikova. In a rain-halted semi-final delayed to Sunday afternoon, Vekic rallied from 4-2 down in the third set when showers struck to defeat 19th-ranked American Danielle Collins, this year's Australian Open runner-up, by 6-4, 4-6, 7-6 (7/2).

That left her only a short rest break before facing Swiatek for the title, but she tested the top-ranked star through two sets. Swiatek broke in the sixth game and held twice to capture the first set after 40 minutes when Vekic netted a backhand.

In the second set, Vekic broke on a forehand crosscourt winner for a 4-2 lead and held twice to force a third set. It caused Swiatek to step up her form. "I wanted to give it all, and knowing how Donna can serve, I wanted to be more loosened up on my return games -- not think, just relax and let my instincts take over," Swiatek said. She broke on a forehand winner to seize a 2-0 edge in the decider, broke again in the fourth game and captured the match after one hour and 47 minutes when Vekic double faulted away a last break. Vekic was in her first WTA final since she won her third career title last October at Courmayeur, Italy.

Top-ranked Iga Swiatek beats Donna Vekic to clinch WTA San Diego title

World number one Iga Swiatek emerged red hot from a rain delay on Saturday to beat American Jessica Pegula 4-6 6-2 6-2 and reach the San Diego Open final.

Swiatek will face either American Danielle Collins or Croatia's Donna Vekic for the title after their semi-final clash was suspended following three rain delays and scheduled to resume on Sunday.

Collins was two games away from a hard-fought victory when showers forced players off for a final time with a 4-6 6-4 4-2 lead over Vekic.

Reigning U.S. Open champion Swiatek sprinted out to a 4-2 lead in the first set before Pegula roared back, reeling off four straight games and capturing the first set on Swiatek's 11th forehand error of the frame.

Rain postponed the start of the second set by more than an hour and the break appeared to boost Poland's Swiatek, who was sharper in the second set, breaking Pegula with a forehand winner on the line to level the contest at a set apiece.

In the third set, Swiatek raced to the net to catch up with a drop shot and sent a backhand down the line for a 4-2 lead she would not relinquish, improving to 4-1 lifetime against Pegula when the American's shot landed in the bottom of the net on match point.

"I was leading in the first set so I knew I had the game to win this match but I lost my focus in the middle of the set," Swiatek said in an on-court interview.

"I didn't want to make that mistake again so I came back and I wanted to be really composed and not lose those important moments," she said, adding that she spent the rain delay doing crossword puzzles.

Ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year, i.e. the Australian Open, Novak Djokovic hit the headlines for all the wrong reasons. His stance against the Covid-19 vaccination landed him in a deportation centre in Australia, prior to the tournament. The news spread like wildfire and resulted in Djokovic being sent back to his country, Serbia. The Serbian is banned from entering the country for three years, despite Russians and Belarusians being given the nod to take part in the tournament Down Under.

Ahead of the 2023 Australian Open, which is set to get underway on January 16, tournament chief Craig Tiley told The Age newspaper that Djokovic will be welcomed at the forthcoming mega event.

"What we're saying at this point is that Novak and the federal government need to work out the situation. And then we'll follow any instructions after that," said Tiley. "I did spend some time with Novak at the Laver Cup. We spoke generally. He said that he'd obviously love to come back to Australia but he knows it's going to be an ultimate decision for the federal government. He's accepted that position. It's a private matter between them," Tiley added.

In addition, Tiley confirmed that the Russian and Belarusian players will be allowed to take part in the first major tournament of 2023, however, they will have to do so as independent players.

"The only difference will be that they cannot represent Russia, cannot represent the flag of Russia, cannot participate in any activity such as the anthem of Russia and have to play as independent players," said Tiley.

While it seems Djokovic might just have a chance to return to Australia for the big-ticket tournament, opposition politician Karen Andrews -- who was serving as the home affairs minister when the former world number one was deported early this year -- believes there should be no special treatment given to the Serbian.

"It would be a slap in the face for those people in Australia who did the right thing, got vaccinated, did everything they needed to do if all of a sudden Novak Djokovic is allowed back into the country simply because he is a high-ranking tennis player with many millions of dollars," Andrews said while speaking on Mornings.

Recently, Immigration lawyer Kon-ming Tsai also opened up in this regard. "There is no risk factor here with allowing Djokovic back in. He's not going to create a problem for the community. He is one of the world's best tennis players and will be able to pull in a lot of foreign visitors," Tsai said in a telephone interview with The Associated Press.

Waiving Novak Djokovic's visa ban to let him play the Australian Open would be a "slap in the face" for Australian people who vaccinated for COVID-19, opposition lawmaker and former Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews said on Monday.

Serbian Djokovic was deported from Australia in the leadup to the Grand Slam in January for declining to be vaccinated.

The former world number one is barred from the country until 2025 but can have his three-year visa ban waived by the government.

Australia in July scrapped a rule that required international travellers to declare their COVID vaccination status, and Djokovic has said he was hoping for "positive news" on his bid to play next year's Australian Open.

Andrews said, however, that the rule change should have no bearing on Djokovic's case.

"There would have been other people in similar circumstances that have also had their visas cancelled," the lawmaker told ABC Radio on Monday.

"So if immigration now chooses to make a special allowance for Novak Djokovic the obvious question is what are they going to do about anyone else who may be in similar circumstances?"

No comment was immediately available from Djokovic. Australia's Home Affairs ministry reiterated that it does not comment on individual cases.

'I want to spread awareness' - Iga Swiatek to donate Ostrava prize money for mental health, wins hearts

Novak Djokovic claimed the 90th title of his career and the fourth of 2022 with a dominant straight-sets victory over Stefanos Tsitsipas in the ATP final in Astana on Sunday.

The 35-year-old Djokovic triumphed 6-3, 6-4 in 75 minutes to add to the trophies he won this season in Israel, Rome and at Wimbledon. It was the ninth consecutive match victory for the fourth seed, who guaranteed himself a spot at the 2022 ATP Finals as a result of the win.

"I dared to dream, actually," Djokovic replied when asked if he had ever imagined he would win 90 titles.

"I always hoped that I would be going to have a great career. Obviously, didn't know the amount of finals I was going to play, the amount of tournaments I was going to win, but my intention was always to reach the highest heights in our sport."

The Serb won in Tel Aviv a week ago, his first singles tournament since wrapping up a seventh Wimbledon crown and 21st Grand Slam title in July. He was banned from the US Open and the entire North American hard court swing over his refusal to be vaccinated before returning for Roger Federer's farewell in the Laver Cup team event in London last month.

His time away had increased his motivation, he agreed. "Well, it did," Djokovic said. "I could not ask for a better re-start of the season. I'm super-pumped and motivated to end the season as well as I have done these past couple of weeks."

For third-seeded Tsitsipas, who had been bidding for a tenth career title, it was a ninth defeat in as many ATP Tour 500-level finals he has played in. Djokovic got off to a flying start, winning the first game at love in a little over one minute.

With Tsitsipas serving at 3-4, Djokovic took the only break point of the first set. Djokovic earned another break in the fifth game of the second set when a Tsitsipas drop shot fell into the net. The Serb converted his third match point with a backhand winner into an open court.

"I'm just very grateful and blessed to be able to play this well at this stage of my life," Djokovic added.

"You know, 35 is not 25. But I think the experience, probably, in these kinds of matches and big occasions helps as well to approach mentally in the right way."

Djokovic leads Tsitsipas 8-2 in their meetings and has won the past seven clashes.

Novak Djokovic beats Stefanos Tsitsipas in Astana Open final to bag 90th career title

Novak Djokovic reached the final of the ATP tournament in Astana on Saturday as opponent Daniil Medvedev surprisingly retired at the end of the second set. With the score at 4-6, 7-6 (8/6), Medvedev called it quits before the deciding set, with even Djokovic initially appearing surprised.

"It's the second time in my life I retired like this with a pulled muscle," Medvedev said. "So here, on the second point of the tie-break, I felt a little bit (of a) strange pop in my adductor.

"I first thought maybe it is cramp and after the point I was like, 'No, probably not a cramp'.

"And during the tie-break, I felt I can play like five, 10 more points but that's it. If I play one more set, you can do it, but you can probably miss half a year instead of one month."

Djokovic will face Stefanos Tstisipas in Sunday's final as he bids for a 90th ATP title.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion has won seven of his nine meetings with the Greek, including in last year's French Open final. Medvedev became the first player to take a set off Djokovic in a singles event since Nick Kyrgios in the Wimbledon final.

Djokovic levelled a dramatic match, in which both players were near their very best, in a tense tie-break. But Medvedev signalled that he could not continue, sending Djokovic into his 128th ATP final.

"It was such a close match, particularly in the second set," added Djokovic of the battle between two former world number ones.

"I would probably say he was a better player on the court in both sets.

"I was fighting and trying to find a way. I found a way to win the second, but I'm just sad for the tournament and for these people who were enjoying the battle, and for Daniil, that it had to end this way."

Earlier, third seed Tsitsipas beat Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach his sixth final of the season.

"It was not easy, being a set down," said Tsitsipas. "To have to deal with a very good opponent on the other side of the net made it an extremely physical battle.

"I am pleased with myself for being so determined to make it work so well."

A break in the opening game of the match proved enough to give fifth seed Rublev the first set. But Tsitsipas, who saved five of six break points in the match, improved as the tie went on and he made his move in the 10th game of the second set to force a decider.

The 24-year-old was rock solid again in the third, wrapping up victory after two hours and 10 minutes to take his head-to-head record against Rublev to 6-4.

"My mentality kind of changed," Tsitsipas added. "I played with more of an aggressive game style and didn't have anything by luck."

I found a way to win the second, but I'm just sad for the tournament and for these people who were enjoying the battle, and for Daniil, that it had to end this way." Earlier, third seed Tsitsipas beat Andrey Rublev 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 to reach his sixth final of the season. "It was not easy, being a set down," said Tsitsipas. "To have to deal with a very good opponent on the other side of the net made it an extremely physical battle. "I am pleased with myself for being so determined to make it work so well." Also Read: Novak Djokovic sets up Daniil Medvedev clash in Astana Open semi-finals A break in the opening game of the match proved enough to give fifth seed Rublev the first set.

Novak Djokovic sets up Daniil Medvedev clash in Astana Open semi-finals

Nick Kyrgios roared back from a "frustrating" first set on Thursday to reach the quarter-finals of the Japan Open, defeating Poland's Kamil Majchrzak 3-6, 6-2, 6-2. Despite his slow start, the maverick Australian emerged victorious in typical crowd-pleasing style, showing off with aggressive aces and some exaggeratedly effortless points. The 27-year-old, who was knocked out in the last eight at the US Open, said that despite Majchrzak breaking his serve, there was "never really doubt in my mind that I was going to win".

"I've barely been broken all year," so when "the opponent doesn't really do much to break me it's quite frustrating," he said after the 1h 21min match.

"I was just not playing the right way -- the court's very fast," Kyrgios added. But by being "a bit more aggressive" in the second and third sets, the world number 20 said he "ended up just weathering the storm and then coming through". "I've got really good confidence in my game right now. So I don't really doubt myself, even when I'm down a set... firing Grand Slams has given me that confidence."

Kyrgios, whose lawyer appeared for him at a court hearing in Australia this week for a charge of common assault, will face third-seeded American Taylor Fritz in the quarter-finals. Fritz beat Japanese player Hiroki Moriya 6-1, 3-6, 6-4, with the crowd rooting for their home favourite right until the end of the nearly two-hour match. Japan's Rio Noguchi also crashed out of the tournament after being trampled 6-3, 6-1 by Canadian Denis Shapovalov, while Borna Coric of Croatia beat American Brandon Nakashima 7-5, 6-2. 'I wanna win for me'.

Earlier in the day, Frances Tiafoe came through a second set battle to secure his spot in the quarter-finals, saying he wasn't bothered by rising expectations. The 24-year-old American, who has been in the spotlight since beating Rafael Nadal on the way to a first Grand Slam semi-final at the US Open last month, overcame Spaniard Bernabe Zapata Miralles 6-1, 7-6 (9/7). The American breezed through the first set before Miralles fought back to take the second to a tie-break that saw some of the best rallies of the 1hr 32min encounter. "Good match today, tough second set," said Tiafoe, who has won his last 13 tie-breaks.

"Sometimes it tips well your way. I'm playing very aggressive, I'm serving well in the tie-breaks, always a couple of aces." He will face Miomir Kecmanovic in the last eight, after the Serb beat Britain's Dan Evans 6-3, 3-6, 7-6 (7/4). After stunning Nadal at Flushing Meadows, Tiafoe played a starring role at the Laver Cup in London where his Rest of the World Team beat Europe for the first time in the competition's history. But the fourth-seeded player, currently world number 19, said he was comfortable with all the attention he is receiving.

"I don't really care about what other people think I should be doing because I've had recent success. "You know: 'Oh, is he going to be the next...?'," he said. "I've been on tour for seven or eight years now, none of that really moves me. I wanna win for me, I'm not trying to achieve anybody else's goals."

Australian tennis player Nick Kyrgios is seeking to have an assault charge against him dismissed on mental health grounds. Kyrgios has been charged with common assault in relation to an incident that took place in January last year. Kyrgios was accused of assault by his former girlfriend.

On Tuesday, the tennis star's lawyer, Michael Kuklies Smith appeared in the Australian Capital Territory magistrates court and requested an adjournment to have time to prepare the forensic mental reports on his client. The adjournment was reportedly granted by the court.

As per the Australian Broadcasting Corporation (ABC), the court considered the request and adjourned the case on mental health grounds. The case is likely to be heard in court again in February next year. Kyrgios' lawyers had applied to have the matter dismissed under a section of the local crimes act.

Iga Swiatek will not play for Poland in next month's Billie Jean King Cup finals in Glasgow, the world number one said on Monday as she took issue with the sport's governing bodies and their handling of the tournament calendar.

Swiatek had helped Poland progress to the finals in April but the tournament will be held from Nov. 8-13, just one day after the season-ending WTA Finals which will be held in Fort Worth, Texas this year.

"I was thinking it through a lot and discussing it with my team all over again, but I will not be able to play at the Billie Jean King Cup in Glasgow. And it makes me sad," the Pole said on Instagram.

"I'm very sorry, because I play for Poland whenever it's possible and I always give it my best. Playing in Poland this year was an honour and I hoped to do this again at the end of the season.

"I'm disappointed that tennis governing bodies didn't come to an agreement on something as basic as the calendar of tournaments, giving us only one day to travel through the globe and changing the time zone."

While the WTA Finals are organised by the women's tennis body, the Billie Jean King Cup -- previously known as the Federation Cup -- is run by the International Tennis Federation (ITF).

"This situation is not safe for our health and could cause injury. I'm going to talk to the WTA and ITF in order to change something," Swiatek added.

"This situation is difficult not only for the players like me, but mainly for the tennis fans that support our sport."

The Billie Jean King Cup will have 12 teams competing in four round-robin groups of three teams each, with the group winners moving to the semi-finals. Poland are in Group D with the Czech Republic and the United States.

"Don't overthink that perfect ending, your will always be amazing in your own way" - were the words Roger Federer used, to sum up, what was far from a perfect ending to his glorious career. The Swiss ace lost his final career match at the Laver Cup last week to bring the curtains down on his illustrious tennis journey.

It was not the kind of finish he would have dreamt of but it was eventful, emotional and fulfilling in its own way. Federer ended his career after losing his last singles and doubles game along with his last team event.

But having his great rival alongside him for his last game, and millions around the world weeping for having marvelled the last of his magic on the court, Federer still managed to achieve what many could only dream of when hanging up their boots.

The results hardly mattered as it was all about the legacy the 41-year-old left behind after decades of his heroics on and off the court. While Federer's was still an ending many can only dream of, Juan Martin Del Potro, a former world no.3 lifted the lid on how a series of injuries led to his heartbreaking retirement decision and left him with 'nothing'.

Del Potro managed only a solitary Grand Slam singles title, but he made the world stand up and take notice of his phenomenal talent with his on-court exploits at the start of his career. The Argentinian had the world at his feet when he became only the third player to defeat Federer in a Grand Slam final in 2009.

Del Potro outclassed Federer to clinch his maiden US Open title in 2009 and there was no looking back. However, injuries kept troubling him consistently, eventually forcing him to give up on the sport. After reaching a career-high ranking of world no.3 in 2018, Del Potro said he will quit tennis after the Argentina Open in February, earlier this year.

Lifting the lid on his injury struggles and retirement heartbreak, Del Potro revealed he cannot run or climb stairs without pain. The Argentinian said he has visited a host of doctors and has started another treatment which failed to yield a positive result.

“I recently went to Switzerland to see another doctor. I started another treatment, it was recommended by many tennis players and so far I have not even had a positive result," Del Potro told said in an interview with Argentinian newspaper La Nacion.

“Imagine what it’s like after every treatment attempt or surgery, the frustration I can feel when things don’t work out. As usual I delude myself, I hope, I have faith in every new treatment I try and, when this fails, the blow is hard.

“And for three and a half years, despite several surgeries and treatments, it always happened. Today I can only walk, I do not run on the treadmill, I cannot climb the stairs without pain. I can’t drive for a long time without stopping to stretch my legs.

"This is my reality, which is hard, it is sad, but I always try to improve my situation and my new challenge is also to live in the best possible way, even psychologically, despite my problem," he went on.

Del Potro had a tough time dealing with injuries throughout his career. The former world no.3 went through four knee surgeries after he fractured his knee cap twice in eight months. The Argentinian said he didn't have a gradual transition to retirement and still wants to return to the court but his knee injury has left him with 'nothing'.

"I can’t psychologically accept a life without tennis. I did not have a gradual transition to the after, I did not prepare, I have no idea what the other athletes did to live this process peacefully," said Del Potro.

"I was number three in the world, then suddenly I broke my knees and here I am, with nothing," added the 34-year-old.

Del Potro, whose last appearance came at the Argentina Open in Buenos Aires earlier this year is yet to retire officially, but has hinted he might not return to the court again. He said he knew after playing at the Argentina Open that his time was up. Injuries had taken a toll on his body and the 34-year-old knew it was 'enough'.

"And all this time I was trying to recover, as I have with any other injury, until in Buenos Aires I said: ‘That’s enough’. And from Buenos Aires I found myself, and I am still there, in that process of reflection, I wonder what things I might like, I don’t know," said Del Potro.

Virat Kohli and Roger Federer remain two of the biggest names in world sports. While Kohli is going strong for Team India and will be a key player at the upcoming T20 World Cup for the one-time winners, Federer sent his plethora of fans into a meltdown by retiring from tennis at the end of the recently-held Laver Cup, in London.

Prior to the 2022 edition of the Laver Cup, Federer had announced that he will step aside from the game by end of September and play his last professional match at the mega event in London. Representing Team Europe, the Federer-starrer side lost 8-13 as Team World won the Laver Cup for the first time in the fifth edition.

Talking about Federer's glittering career, he clinched 103 singles titles. The 41-year-old Swiss maestro ended with a staggering 20 Grand Slam titles -- third-most in men's tennis -- and wishes poured in from all corners for the legendary player. Kohli, in a video shared by ATP Tour's official Twitter handle, also paid a heartfelt tribute to Federer:

In the video, the former Indian captain said, "Hello Roger, it's a great honour for me to be able to send this video across for you congratulating you on a phenomenal career that has given us so many beautiful moments and memories."

"I personally had the chance to meet you in the Australian Open in 2018, something that I'll never ever forget in my life. One thing that stood out for me even watching you play, was the fact that so many people around the world, not just in the world of tennis got behind you, supporting you and that kind of unity I've never seen for any other individual athlete ever. That is something that cannot be created, that cannot be generated in anyway."

World number two Casper Ruud said on Wednesday that a bit of Roger Federer had rubbed off on him after being part of the tennis legend's send-off last week.

The 23-year-old Norwegian reached the final of the US Open earlier this month and then was surrounded by the cream of men's tennis at the Laver Cup in London for Federer's last hurrah.

He enjoyed seeing up close the chemistry between Federer and his long-time rival and friend Rafael Nadal. The duo played together in doubles for Federer's farewell.

"Having those two together in Roger's last match was incredible to witness," Ruud said at the Korea Open in Seoul.

"It was very fun to be around them. They joke with each other all the time.

'Fedal' reunion confirmed at Laver Cup! Roger Federer to team up with Rafael Nadal in final professional match

Frances Tiafoe returned to haunt Team Europe with a dazzling win over Stefanos Tsitsipas to give Team World their first Laver Cup title on Sunday, ending Roger Federer's hopes of finishing his career by lifting another trophy.

Two days after he and Jack Sock beat Federer and Rafa Nadal in a tearful farewell for the Swiss great at the O2 Arena, American showman Tiafoe saved four match points against Tsitsipas before roaring to a 1-6 7-6(11) 10-8 victory.

Tiafoe's win, worth three points for his team, gave John McEnroe's Team World an unassailable 13-8 lead, having started the day trailing 8-4 and staring at a fifth straight defeat in the event co-founded by Federer.

Team World enjoyed a super Sunday as Canadian young gun Felix Auger-Aliassime stunned 21-time Grand Slam champion Novak Djokovic 6-3 7-6(3). Earlier, Auger-Aliassime had partnered American Sock to a 2-6 6-3 10-8 win against Briton Andy Murray and Italian Matteo Berrettini.

Tsitsipas had the chance to take the match to a deciding singles match, but Tiafoe showed tremendous guts to save four match points in a gripping second-set tiebreak.

The American had the pro-Europe crowd in raptures, and his team mates off their feet, with some extraordinary shot-making in the so-called Laver Breaker.

And when Tsitsipas hit the net on match point, Tiafoe collapsed to the court and was immediately buried under a pile of his red-shirted team mates and captain McEnroe.

"It's an unbelievable feeling," Tiafoe, who reached the U.S. Open semi-final said on court. "Jonny Mac was dropping F bombs all week saying we need to get it down this year.

"It wasn't just me but I showed a lot of heart to get this done. I was getting my ass kicked for a while but I kept going. This is big, we're going to celebrate big tonight."

McEnroe was ecstatic at finally getting his hands on the trophy and getting one over old rival Bjorn Borg who was captain of a Team Europe side that were big favourites.

"No one beats Team World five times in a row," the American said. "Felix stepped up big time.

"Frances is prime time, we saw that at the U.S. Open. This is an incredible team event and I'm loving every second of it."

It was not the ending Federer had dreamed of in the last event of his 24-year professional career.

Apart from playing his last-ever competitive match, he had sat at courtside in every match here, offering his words of wisdom and support to his team mates.

"Of course I'm disappointed," 20-time Grand Slam champion Federer told reporters at the end of an emotional weekend.

"I was on the team. Almost lost my voice. My hands hurt from clapping. Told Andy (Murray) in the locker room, I don't like losing. It's not fun.

"This weekend has been all over the place for me. I enjoyed it, but it's unfortunate that we couldn't get the win tonight."

Tiafoe, beaten heavily by Djokovic the previous evening, was making no apologies to Federer for being the pantomime villain.

"Absolutely not. I'm not going to apologise to him. He's got a lot to apologise after the last 24 years after beating everybody on the tour," Tiafoe, clutching a beer, said.

"But I will say thank you for having me in this amazing event, for what he's done for the game. He's a class act. Happy to know him, happy to call him friend, happy to call him a colleague, and best wishes in his second act."

Team World will be aiming to retain their title next year when the event takes place in Vancouver.

Tiafoe steals Federer's spotlight to seal first Laver Cup title for Team World

Novak Djokovic said he was bothered by a wrist problem during the Laver Cup in London and that his lengthy absence from the Tour recently could be to blame.

The three-day tournament in London's O2 Arena was Djokovic's first event since the Serb won his 21st Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon in early July.

The 35-year-old, who missed the North American hardcourt swing and the U.S. Open due to not being vaccinated against COVID-19, produced a dazzling performance on his return to the Tour on Saturday by winning his singles and doubles matches.

However, he lost to Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime on the final day of competition on Sunday.

"I have been struggling with my right wrist for the last four, five days, to be honest. I have been keeping it under control," Djokovic told reporters.

"The two matches yesterday probably had an effect. Today was not easy. I couldn't serve as fast or as accurately as I would like to. That has affected the whole game."

Djokovic said qualifying for November's ATP Finals in Turin remained his goal and that he will play a tournament in Tel Aviv this week followed by an event in Kazakhstan next week and then the Paris Masters at the end of October.

His Wimbledon victory guarantees him a spot in the Tour-ending Finals if he remains ranked in the world's top 20.

Djokovic, who is currently ranked seventh, said the wrist issue could be due to a combination of factors.

"Could be not playing matches almost three months, and then conditions here are such that the balls are really big and slow," he said.

"You always have to generate a lot of wrist action and speed, which could be the case why I have been feeling soreness."

Novak Djokovic opens up on wrist injury concerns, says ATP Finals remains his goal

Rafael Nadal was seen in tears alongside his great rival and friend Roger Federer after the Swiss legend's farewell match at the Laver Cup in London on Saturday. There were emotional scenes at the O2 Arena as Federer took the court for one last time before drawing curtains on his legendary career.

Nadal paired up with Federer for Team Europe in the 20-time Grand Slam champion's last game of his career. The Spaniard has now revealed he himself was close to retirement earlier this year and thought French Open would be his last tournament.

The 36-year-old has enjoyed a brilliant season so far having won two Grand Slam titles in 2022. Nadal won the Australian Open at the start of the year before clinching the French Open title after defeating Casper Ruud in the final. He left behind both Federer and Novak Djokovic to take the top spot among male players with the highest number of Grand Slam singles titles in their careers.

However, Nadal revealed he was contemplating a decision about his career during the French Open due to injuries. He has had an injury-laden season and had to pull out of the semi-final at Wimbledon earlier this year due to an abdominal injury.

“I don't know, I'm not at that moment yet. I was close to that time this year. I'm not going to lie to you. During Roland Garros I thought that it might be my last tournament, this is the reality. Although from then on everything went very bad physically, I broke my abdominal twice, at Wimbledon and in New York," Nadal told Spanish outlet AS.

However, Nadal is not thinking about retirement anymore and is focused on recovering well from his current injuries to return strongly. He remained tight-lipped on where he will be seen in action next but the 22-time Grand Slam champion confirmed he is not going anywhere anytime soon.

"It has been an accumulation of important misfortunes, added to all these personal things. But I'm not in that moment and I don't want to think about that moment. Today, what I want is to get back to normality, for everything to go well with my personal life, which is the top priority, and then organise my life in the right way. Have peace of mind in my personal and professional life,” he explained.

I was close to retiring, thought French Open this year might be my last tournament: Rafael Nadal

Roger Federer's departure from tennis has raised the question of retirement of the other two members of the revered 'Big Three' but Novak Djokovic has assured that he does not feel "old enough" to consider bringing down the curtain yet.

Federer's decision was not unexpected given the 41-year-old's recent struggles with injuries and form, but it was still met with an outpouring of sadness by fans and former players when the Swiss great bid an emotional goodbye to the sport.

His exit has brought the longevity of his great rivals, Rafa Nadal and Djokovic, in sharper focus while fans and pundits have wondered how men's tennis would cope with the prospect of losing their most marketable athletes.

"I don't feel yet so old, to be honest, for my tennis career to finish," Djokovic told reporters on Saturday after returning to tennis for the first time since winning his 21st Grand Slam singles title at Wimbledon.

"I still feel my body is serving me, is listening to me well. That's the key I think when you get to 35-plus."

The so-called men's 'Big Three' revolutionised the sport with their own achievements and riveting rivalries. They have won a combined 63 Grand Slam singles titles between them.

A chronic foot issue forced Nadal to contemplate retirement in 2021 and again this year after the 36-year-old Spaniard won a men's record 22nd major title at the French Open, playing with numbing injections before each match in Paris.

Nadal said he was not contemplating retirement at the moment after a radio frequency treatment eased pain in his foot and allowed him to play Wimbledon.

Djokovic, the fittest among the three, said he has made necessary adjustments to his schedule to look after his body.

"I'm not playing as much as I played few years ago. I want to peak at the best tournaments, biggest tournaments in the world, which are Grand Slams and some of the biggest ATP events, playing for my country," the Serb added.

"That's what gives me the most motivation and inspires me to play the best tennis. I really want to keep going. I don't have the ending of my career on the horizon at the moment.

"I just want to keep going as long as I feel good and I can compete with the youngsters, that I could be one of the candidates to win Grand Slams."
