Novak Djokovic is gearing up for the Australian Open 2023 edition, which gets underway on January 16. Ahead of the first Grand Slam of the year, the Serbian and former world number one started his new year in style by winning the Adelaide International. In the final, he faced American player Sebastian Korda and while he lost the opening set, Djokovic used his experience to come from behind and win the match, and title, 6-7 (8-10), 7-6 (7-3), 6-4. He, thus, claimed his 92nd career title (tied with arch-rival Rafael Nadal).

While the match ended in a favourable result for Djokovic, he once again made heads turn with one of his gestures on the court. After going down in the first set, the 35-year-old was seen directing his brother and his agents to leave the box. The reason for such a move from Djokovic wasn't known but he didn't seem pleased at all. Here's the video of the gesture from the Serb:

After the match, Djokovic spoke about his move and even apologised to his team for attempting to kick them out of the box. He first lauded his opponent and said, "I want to say a few words to Seb and his team, amazing tournament, amazing effort today. I'd probably say that you were closer to victory today than I was. It was decided in one or two shots, one or two points but the future is bright for you and you're amazing player so well done."

Djokovic then shifted focus to his own team and opined, "I'd like to thank my team for handling me, for tolerating me in good and bad times today." Regarding his outburst post the opening set, he said, "I'm sure they didn't have such a blast with me going back and forth with them but I appreciate them being here." The star player also mentioned his brother who was also spotted leaving following Djokovic's gestures. He said, "My brother Marko is also here and I don't see him that much so I appreciate him coming here, I love you."

Djokovic defeated Sebastian to warm up in style before the Aus Open. Winner of the Aus Open on nine occasions, the Serbian is a favourite for the title. The showpiece event kicks off in Melbourne Park on January 16.

Players at this month's Australian Open will not be required to take COVID-19 tests and could play even if they had the virus, tournament director Craig Tiley said on Monday. The health policy, which Tiley said reflected what was happening in the wider community, is a marked change from strict protocols which surrounded the tournament over the past two years. The 2021 tournament took place in a biosecure bubble with spectators shut out for several days after an outbreak of the virus in the community, while last year nine-times champion Novak Djokovic was deported because of his stance on vaccines.

"We just wanted to follow what's currently in the community," Tiley told reporters at Melbourne Park. "We have gone a step further by making a recommendation around staying away when you're ill, and that our medical staff will continue to monitor that, with the players individually as well." Cricketer Matt Renshaw continued to play for Australia in a five-day test match against South Africa in Sydney last week despite testing positive for COVID. The batsman was isolated from his team mates for the first three days of the match but returned to the home dressing room after several negative tests.

"We've made it clear to our players, as well as our staff, if anyone is feeling unwell, stay home," Tiley added. Melbourne endured some of the longest and strictest lockdowns in the world at the height of the pandemic but recommendations have long since replaced mandates as the cornerstone of public health policy in the city.

Jessica Pegula gave the United States the perfect start to their United Cup semi-final against Poland with a 6-2 6-2 victory over world number one Iga Swiatek in the opening singles rubber on Friday before Frances Tiafoe doubled their advantage.

Swiatek was only able to hold her serve once in the first set as Pegula raced to a 5-0 lead and the American world number three kept up the pressure with some brilliant returns in the second set. Pegula secured a dominant victory that will also give her a personal boost heading into this month's Australian Open when Swiatek sent a forehand wide after little more than an hour on Ken Rosewall Arena. "I thought I did a good job playing really aggressive, serving smart and returning really well," said Pegula, who had lost her previous four matches against Swiatek.

It was her first career victory over a reigning number one and a result that left Swiatek in a flood of tears in Poland's dugout after the match. "She's one of the best players in the world so you have to be really on top of your game to win against Jessie," Swiatek said. "It was always like that, even last season. "So I'm not surprised, because I know what she can do. I'm more surprised I wasn't able to step up to her game today."

Tiafoe gave the Americans a 2-0 lead when he comfortably beat Kacper Zuk 6-3 6-3, saying after the match that Pegula's performance had inspired him. "It was great, I was so amped watching. Forget about me playing, I was so happy for Jess ... I know what it means for her going forward," said Tiafoe, who has won all four of his singles matches in the event, dropping one set. Maria Sakkari will be in action in the evening session when Greece take on Italy in the other semi-final at the inaugural mixed team tournament.

The WTA, the principal body that runs women's professional tennis, on Wednesday demanded a private meeting with Peng Shuai before any potential return of the circuit to China. "We have received confirmation that Peng is safe and comfortable, but we have not yet met with her personally," the WTA said in a statement. "As we would do with any of our players globally, we have called for a formal investigation into the allegations by the appropriate authorities and an opportunity for the WTA to meet with Peng - privately - to discuss her situation."

The former doubles world number one has not been seen outside China since first making, and then withdrawing, accusations of sexual assault against a high-ranking official. Peng had alleged in a social media post that former Chinese vice-premier Zhang Gaoli forced her into sex during a years-long relationship, but has since twice denied she accused anyone of sexual assault and described the situation as a "huge misunderstanding". "We continue to hold firm on our position and our thoughts remain with Peng Shuai and the WTA continues to work towards a resolution," the WTA said. "While we have always indicated we are hopeful we will be in a position to again operate WTA events in the region, we will not compromise our founding principles in order to do so.

Novak Djokovic battled back from 5-2 down in the first set to beat Quentin Halys 7-6(3) 7-6(5) and move into the Adelaide International 1 quarter-final on Thursday. Halys, ranked 64th in the world, has never beaten a top-10 opponent but gave Djokovic a big scare before the former world number one prevailed in two tiebreakers. Djokovic, who has now won 31 consecutive singles matches in Australia, is preparing for the Jan. 16-29 Australian Open, where he is seeking a record-extending 10th crown.

The Serb was unable to defend his title last year after he was deported on the eve of the tournament for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. "It was a great performance from my opponent today. I want to congratulate him for great quality and a great fight. Tough luck but he played like a top 10 player today, no doubt," Djokovic, now ranked fifth in the world, said. "As far as my game goes, I feel good on the court. I didn't have such a great start, I lost my serve early. He was serving really well, fast, big serves, hitting his spots in the box very well. "Just difficult to play in this kind of court that is really fast. It kind of favours the server. If you're serving well, it's tough to break the serve of a big server like him, so two tiebreaks were probably the most realistic score."

The 35-year-old Serbian will next play Denis Shapovalov, who he has beaten in all seven of their meetings. "Denis is one of the most complete players out there, he's got a very dynamic style of tennis, a big serve, comes to the net and (he is) comfortable playing from the back of the court," Djokovic added. Rafael Nadal, Coco Gauff, Carlos Alcaraz to play in charity match to raise funds for crisis-hit Ukraine

2022 was an action-packed season for tennis lovers. It started with Novak Djokovic's Covid vaccination row at the Australian Open before Rafael Nadal won the French Open. The likes of Elena Rybakina and Iga Swiatek also tasted success in women's singles. While the year saw the rise of Carlos Alcaraz -- winning the US Open -- it was also a witness to the retirement of Roger Federer, Serena Williams, Ashleigh Barty, etc. After lots that took place in 2022, a new tennis season has already kicked off and the games are coming thick and fast in 2023; with the Tata Open (in Pune) and the Australian Open which will commence on January 16.

Talking about the Tata Open, the reigning US Open champions Rajeev Ram and Joe Salisbury are currently plying their trade at the event, being held in Pune. The pair have been a force to reckon with in recent years and will like to remain consistent and go a step ahead in 2023. After a Round of 16 victory in the Tata Open, where Rajeev-Joe went past Sebastian Baez-Luis David Martinez 6-3, 7-6 (7-1), Rajeev had an exclusive interaction with WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo. The American player spoke at length on the emergence of young talents, the retirement of stalwarts and on Novak Djokovic ahead of the Australian Open. Excerpts:

Rajeev a very happy new year to you and considering your Indian roots this must be a memorable experience returning to India to play and that too as the top seed.

Happy New Year to you as well. I've been in India for quite some time, since 2016. Covid had a major role to play in it. Happy to be in Pune. Never been here so it is good.

Tennis saw three high-profile retirements in 2022 with Roger Federer, Serena Williams and before them Ashleigh Barty. with Rafael Nadal one is not sure how much more punishment that battered body can take...Nadal and Djokovic did win three of the four slams last year but has the baton been officially passed?

I don't think it is really past yet. I honestly believe if Novak was playing in Australia, Wimbledon had points and if he was allowed to play US Open, he would have been the No. 1 ranked player to date. He showed his class again in the ATP Tour finals. He played so little last year but still was able to keep such a high ranking. It is getting there (for the young guns) but I don't think Djokovic is ready to give up just yet.

Obviously, when we factor in the 2022 season we have to remember that Djokovic didn't play as much as he would have liked. Let's leave his vaccination beliefs aside and focus only on the phenomenal player that he is. You saw him at the tour finals and do you get the feeling that he is going to carry a lot of hurt into the Australian Open and is the player to beat?

He's the player to beat. I'm guessing he has won 8-9 times there. He is so difficult on that surface and everybody will agree that he is the guy to beat there for sure, even if his ranking is not No 1.

A lot of players will also head into the Aus open thinking hang on, we were the next gen but it's Alcaraz who has seized the initiative...the likes of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Zverev face a defining season don't you think?

I think you have seen this generation of Federer, Nadal, Murray and Djokovic have eaten up a few generations. I don't think Medvedev, Tsitsipas and the likes are done by any stretch but I think they know they have such young talents on their heels and that will make for a super competitive 4-5 years when Djokovic and Nadal did. Don't think it will be like the last few years where only a few guys have dominated. I think it will be very competitive and refreshing in that sense.

Before I close this, what will be a good season for you personally, something you would be happy with coming December this year?

Winning slams always make a great year. We have managed to do that for the last 2-3 years in a row so hopefully, that's a start. Becoming the No. 1 team in the world is something we haven't achieved. We have been No. 2 for quite some time. Those two things are at the top of the list. Everything else will follow through.

Excerpts: Rajeev a very happy new year to you and considering your Indian roots this must be a memorable experience returning to India to play and that too as the top seed. Novak Djokovic cruised through his first singles match in Australia since being deported last year with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Constant Lestienne at the Adelaide International 1 on Tuesday. The 35-year-old Serb was deported on the eve of the 2022 Australian Open for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and received a three-year travel ban for the country, which was waived in November. After being well received by fans during a rare doubles appearance on Monday, Djokovic began his preparations for the Jan. 16-29 Australian Open against world number 65 Lestienne by racing through the opening set.

The 21-time Grand Slam champion turned up the heat on his French opponent with a double break to go 4-0 up in the second set before Lestienne got on the board, but Djokovic closed out the match in style as supporters chanted his name. "I have to say, I'm glad to be back in Australia, thank you all for coming out," Djokovic said on court. "Thank you for giving me the welcome I could only wish for. "... If I have to pick one country where I've had the most success, which treated me in the best way in terms of tennis, it's here. I won my first Grand Slam here in 2008 and I have nine Australian Open titles - I've had some epic matches. "Australia has been the place where I play my best tennis and I look forward to coming here. The circumstances last year were as they were and it wasn't easy for anybody but I'm happy to be here, focus on tennis and enjoy my time with you guys."

Up next for world number five Djokovic is another Frenchman in Quentin Halys, who beat Australian Jordan Thompson 6-3 6-4. Former U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev also advanced to the second round of the ATP 250 tournament when Lorenzo Sonego retired with a right arm injury while trailing 7-6(6) 2-1. Medvedev, who lost to Rafa Nadal in last year's Melbourne Park final, saved nine set points to win the opening set. "That's actually crazy," Medvedev said. "Probably the first time in my life I've saved nine set points. "What a match to start the year. Unfortunate for everybody that it finished early in a way, even if we played one hour and 40 minutes, but happy to be through."

Medvedev will take on Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic for a quarter-final spot. Roberto Bautista-Agut stunned fifth-seed Russian Andrey Rublev 4-6 6-3 6-4 while sixth seed Jannik Sinner eased past Briton Kyle Edmund 6-3 6-2 and Denis Shapovalov overcame Australian Rinky Hijikata 2-6 6-4 6-3.

Novak Djokovic will never forget how it felt to be deported from Australia earlier this year but the Serb said his willingness to return for next month's Grand Slam at Melbourne Park shows the depth of feeling he has for the country. Djokovic was deported on the eve of the 2022 Australian Open in January for not being vaccinated against COVID-19 and received a three-year travel ban from the country.

However, the former world number one's visa ban was waived in November, opening up a path for Djokovic to target a 10th Australian Open crown and giving him a chance to tie Rafa Nadal's mark of 22 Grand Slam titles. "You can't forget those events, it's one of those things that stick with you," said Djokovic in his first news conference since returning to Australia. "It stays with you for the rest of your life. It's something I've never experienced before and hopefully never again, but it is a valuable life experience for me. But I have to move on and coming back to Australia speaks about how I feel about this country and how I feel about playing here."

Djokovic said his overall experience in Australia had not been soured by what happened in January. Those circumstances will not replace what I have lived in Melbourne and in Australia throughout my entire career," Djokovic said. Former world number one Novak Djokovic can't forget being deported from Australia but is ready to move on

Australian Open tournament director Craig Tiley said that he has "a great deal of confidence in the Australian public" that Novak Djokovic would be welcomed back to the country nearly a year after the Serb was deported from Australia for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. Djokovic arrived in Australia on Tuesday (December 27), ahead of his bid for a 10th men's singles title at next month's Australian Open. In November, the Australian government granted the Serbian a visa to travel to the Grand Slam event, saying it had decided to revoke the decision to cancel Djokovic's visa after considering all relevant factors.

Since the cancellation of Djokovic's visa in January 2022, all COVID-related border restrictions have been removed in Australia, including the requirement to provide evidence of vaccination status to enter the country. Tiley, speaking in Melbourne on Tuesday, said: "We're a very well-educated sporting public, particularly those who come to the tennis, they love their tennis, they love seeing greatness, they love seeing great athleticism, great matches. "And I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react like we hope they would react and have respect for that."

Tiley, speaking in Melbourne on Tuesday, said: "We're a very well-educated sporting public, particularly those who come to the tennis, they love their tennis, they love seeing greatness, they love seeing great athleticism, great matches. "And I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react like we hope they would react and have respect for that." Also read: Will 2023 Australian Open be Rafael Nadal's last at Melbourne Park? Australian Open: Tournament director Craig Tiley confident Novak Djokovic will be well received

Former world number one Novak Djokovic arrived in Australia on Tuesday almost one year after he was deported for refusing to be vaccinated against Covid-19, tennis officials said.
The nine-time Australian Open champion was initially banned from the country for three years after losing a high-stakes legal battle in January over his vaccine status.

Australia has since lifted its requirement for visitors to show proof of vaccination against Covid.

The government confirmed in November that the unvaccinated Serb was no longer barred and had been granted a visa allowing him to play in the opening Grand Slam of the year, which starts next month.

Tennis Australia chief executive Craig Tiley said he hoped local fans would embrace Djokovic's return.

"We welcome him back to Australia. I think as we speak he's landing in Adelaide and I think that he is going to be again the player to beat," he told reporters.

"I have a great deal of confidence in the Australian public. I have a lot of confidence that the fans will react how we hope they will react."

Tennis Australia confirmed that Djokovic had touched down.

World number nine American tennis star Taylor Fritz has pointed out that if players on the ATP tour come out as gay, they should be openly accepted. In recent times, a number of tennis players -- both current and former, on the WTA tour -- have not shied away from talking about their homosexuality. However, there isn't much openness in this regard with players on the ATP. Thus, the 25-year-old Fritz feels that the male players may be hesitant in coming out in the open due to the attention that comes with it.

"I'm not sure if there are homosexual tennis players in the top 100. Statistically speaking, there should be. ... I think it is odd, because I feel like a player would be accepted. I and my friends, other players on tour wouldn't have any issues with it, it would be totally normal and I think people would be accepting," Fritz was quoted as saying in an interview with Clay.

"I couldn't tell you why (no one has came out). That would be a lot of big news and maybe people just don't want to be in the spotlight, maybe they don't want the distraction of getting all the attention and stuff like that," he added.

Earlier in 2022, an ATP Tour survey was carried out which indicated that a whopping 75% of the players had heard others use homophobic slurs. The Tour, hence, associated with You Can Play, an organisation that works for LGBTQ+ inclusion in sports. In addition, the survey mentioned a "strong fear of rejection, isolation from others on tour, and loneliness".

One can only hope, just like Fritz, that there is more acceptance for gay players all across the globe with each passing year.

A terrific run of form in the latter half of 2022 put Nick Kyrgios among the Grand Slam contenders and while the Australian knows much is expected of him heading into Melbourne Park next month, he says he has learned to embrace the pressure. After years of underachieving, the talented but temperamental Kyrgios won the Citi Open in Washington and reached his first Grand Slam singles final at Wimbledon, where he lost to Novak Djokovic. The 27-year-old, who won the Australian Open men's doubles title in January with countryman Thanasi Kokkinakis, also reached the U.S. Open quarter-finals, going down in five sets to Karen Khachanov.

His best result in the Australian Open singles tournament was a quarter-final berth in 2015 and it is safe to say his compatriots expect him to go much deeper at the season-opening Grand Slam this time around. "... I completely understand going on the match court with all this expectation that 'Nick Kyrgios (has a) legitimate chance to win a Grand Slam now'," Kyrgios told Eurosport in an interview published on Thursday.

Roger Federer stunned one and all by retiring in September 2022. The tennis stalwart hadn't played any competitive match since his Wimbledon 2021 quarter-final exit and, hence, his retirement was always on the cards. Being plagued with several injury concerns, the Swiss maestro finally decided to hang his boots; sending his fans into a meltdown. After his retirement announcement, he played his last competitive game in Laver Cup 2022 where he teamed up with longtime rival Rafael Nadal though the duo lost to Frances Tiafoe-Jack Sock.

Recently, the 40-year-old Federer shared a hilarious anecdote during his interaction with Trevor Noah in the latest episode of the Daily Show. During the show, the host asked Federer to spill the beans about the time he was denied entry inside Wimbledon. To this, Federer revealed that he arrived in London to see a doctor following an event in Tokyo, Japan, and then decided to visit the All England Lawn Tennis & Croquet Club (ALTEC) to kill time before his return flight for Switzerland.

Just then, Federer was denied entry at the Wimbledon, at an event which has been dominated by the former world number one throughout his career. He shared, "When you win Wimbledon, you become a member automatically. So, I'm like, "No, I don't have my membership card but I am a member and I'm just wondering where I can get in," and she (secutiry guard) said, "Yeah, but you have to be a member." I was like, "I'm just asking you again where can I get in", and she said, "The other side, but you have to be a member."

Federer asserted, "So, I look at her one last time and I'm so sorry, I couldn't believe and still can't believe I said this and because I still feel bad about it. I'd look at her and say, "I have won this tournament eight times. Please believe me, I am a member!" Federer mentioned that he had to drive to another gate where he was finally recognised by a guard. He added, "When I said I won Wimbledon eight times, for a split second, I wasn't sure if it was eight anymore because I thought it 'was it seven, was it eight? I don't know'. But I said it because I never talk like this."

So, I'm like, "No, I don't have my membership card but I am a member and I'm just wondering where I can get in," and she (secutiry guard) said, "Yeah, but you have to be a member." I was like, "I'm just asking you again where can I get in", and she said, "The other side, but you have to be a member." “Former tennis player” Roger Federer ft. But I said it because I never talk like this." The ATP on Wednesday fined Britain's Lawn Tennis Association (LTA) 820,000 pounds ($1 million) for banning male players from Russia and Belarus from this year's summer grasscourt events ahead of the Championships over Moscow's invasion of Ukraine. Players were banned from the UK grass-court tournaments held in the build-up to Wimbledon, which became the first Grand Slam tournament to ban individual competitors from the two countries -- a move that was condemned by the men's and women's tours.

"The LTA is deeply disappointed with this," the LTA said in a statement.

"The ATP, in its finding, has shown no recognition of the exceptional circumstances created by Russia's invasion of Ukraine, or the international sporting community and UK Government's response to that invasion.

"The ATP appear to regard this matter as a straightforward breach of their rules -- with a surprising lack of empathy shown for the situation in Ukraine, and a clear lack of understanding of the unique circumstances the LTA faced."

The ATP had said in April that the "unilateral decision" by Wimbledon to exclude players from Russia and Belarus was unfair and could potentially set a damaging precedent for the game.

"We stand by our original position on this matter, that unilateral decision-making by members of the ATP Tour threatens our ability to operate as a global sport," the ATP said in a statement.

"We believe that the measures taken protect the long-term future of our game and its commitment to merit-based participation, without discrimination, for individual athletes."

UK Culture Secretary Michelle Donelan said on Wednesday that the vast majority of the international sporting community had stood "shoulder to shoulder" in condemning Russian President Vladimir Putin's invasion of Ukraine.

"The UK has taken a world-leading role to build this international response," Donelan said. "We are clear that sport cannot be used to legitimise this deadly invasion, and that athletes representing the Russian or Belarusian states should be banned from competing in other countries.

"Despite widespread condemnation, the international tennis tours are determined to be outcasts in this, with investment in the growth of our domestic game hampered as a result.

"This is the wrong move by the ATP and WTA. I urge them to think carefully about the message this sends and to reconsider."

Earlier this year, the LTA was slapped with a fine of 620,000 pounds by the WTA, which governs women's tennis.

"The financial impact of both this (ATP) fine and the WTA's fine will have a material impact on the LTA's ability to develop and host tennis in this country," the LTA said.

"We had intended to host a number of ATP Challenger level events to give more opportunities to lower ranked players in the first quarter of 2023 and will now not be able to do this, particularly given the possibility of further fines.

"We will carefully consider our response and we await the outcome of our appeal against the WTA's decision and sanction."

On September 15, Roger Federer dropped a bomb by announcing his retirement from the game. Federer, the former world number one, had dominated proceedings on the court in his 24-year-long glittering career. The Swiss maestro played his last competitive match in the Laver Cup 2022 edition, in London, by featuring for Team Europe in their doubles face-off, versus Team World, alongside his long-time rival Rafael Nadal. Now, he has opened up on the emotional phone call he had with the Spaniard as he was the first person outside his family and team to know about his retirement.

Speaking to Trevor Noah in the latest episode of the Daily Show, Federer spilled the beans on his call with Nadal. He told, "This is a very unusual situation for us to be on the same team. That changed the whole dynamics of my farewell. My hope was I could play doubles with Rafa. So I called him up after the US Open. It was a very emotional phone call because it was one of the first times I told somebody outside of my team and my family."

"I had to call him up and tell him ‘hey Rafa, just before you make any other plans, I would love you to be at the Laver Cup and play maybe one last doubles with me. It would be amazing. Unfortunately, my knee is not good anymore and I think, it’s the end, you know? And he is like, ‘okay, oh my god, okay, yeah I will be there whatever it takes’.

"He has now become a father, happy for him. And we were not sure if he was going to make it because of the baby. It was one of the first times I had to tell that story and come to terms that my career was ending," Federer added.

Recalling the magical atmosphere in the Laver Cup and retiring with his rivals close to his side, Federer said, "So when he showed up, and Novak was there, and Murray was there, and Bjorn Borg was there, it was an amazing moment. I knew it was going to be an emotional moment. I have cried a lot in victory and defeat when I was younger, I don’t why, I do it. I am happy because I remember that moment because of it. When I took the mic after it was all over, I knew it was going to be bad, but I did pretty good. I was so happy that I was able to be there in tennis clothes. And it was amazing to do it in London too, where I have had so much success. "Rafa there holding my hand, briefly people thought it was… I held his hand, actually. It was amazing."

In his final competitive match, in the Laver Cup, Federer teamed up with Nadal as they went down to Team World's Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock4-6, 7-6 (2), 11-9. However, Federer has left a huge void in the tennis fraternity with his retirement after winning hearts with his on-court performances and overall demeanour. The veteran ended with as many as 20 Grand Slam titles and 103 singles titles in 24 years.

Legendary tennis coach Nick Bollettieri, who helped develop superstars such as Andre Agassi and Maria Sharapova, has died aged 91, the IMG Academy announced in a statement on Monday.

"Nick Bollettieri, the legendary tennis coach and founder of Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, which served as the foundation for today's IMG Academy, has passed away," read the statement.

While his methods were sometimes controversial, his academy in Florida churned out top players and he was to coach 10 players who would go on to become number one in the world.

Monica Seles, Jim Courier, Anna Kournikova and Mary Pierce were other stars who passed through his Bradenton complex.
Bollettieri also advised Venus and Serena Williams and Boris Becker.

"Tennis wouldn't be where it is today without Nick's influence," said Jimmy Arias, IMG Academy director of tennis and one of Bollettieri's original students.

"His tennis academy, which I had the privilege of growing up within, not only served as a launching pad for many tennis greats but evolved into an institution that has had a profound impact on the development of athletes across many sports at all levels."

Bollettieri founded the Nick Bollettieri Tennis Academy, now IMG Academy in 1978 with a focus on intense physical training, total immersion, and ongoing competition among the most talented players in the world.

His enthusiasm for coaching continued almost right up to the end.

"Even in his last days, you could often find him on campus, coaching and mentoring young student-athletes and staff with the same passion and enthusiasm as he did in his 20s," said Tim Pernetti, President of IMG Academy Bradenton, a division of IMG Academy.

"Our heart goes out to his wife, Cindi, and his children. He has made a permanent and lasting impact on all of us."

India is not just about cricket. Sure, the game remains a top choice for many but a plethora of non-cricket stalwarts have popularised various other sports. Talking about tennis, the game's rise has been spectacular. Of course, the likes of Vijay Amritraj, Jaideep Mukherjee, Leander Paes, and Mahesh Bhupathi were the pioneers of the game, Sania Mirza, Rohan Bopanna, Ramesh Ramanathan, Sumit Nagal, Somdevdev Burman, etc., have given it an extra mileage in the country.

Riya Bhatia is another tennis sensation on the rise. The 25-year-old is making giant strides and has been India's new No. 2 ranked player for quite some time. In addition, she clinched two national titles -- hardcourt and grass-court national championships in 2016. Recently, she was seen playing for the Pro Veri Supersmashers in the ongoing fourth season of the Pro Tennis League (PTL) -- a platform for bidding young stars to hone their skills and showcase their credentials -- and ahead of it, WION's Aditya Sahay had an exclusive interview with her. During the interaction, she shed light on her game style, challenges of playing on different surfaces and named her favourites from the big league of players.

How is Pro Tennis League honing the skills of young players?

I would definitely say it is helping the sport in India. Wish I had something like this when I was a junior. We can mentor juniors and teach them how to play certain points. It's only through such leagues that they can connect with us and vice versa. With Indian people coming and watching us, it's a new format so it's a fun thing for all involved.

How is it for Riya to play on different surfaces?

I'm an all-round player. Changing surfaces isn't a big issue for me. I enjoy playing on all. My favourite is clay but I've been performing well on hard courts. Grass is something close to my heart and I played my best game there at the WTA in Germany and won the national grasscourt. My game is more of an all-round player where I can change my game style according to the court and conditions needed. Certainly, there are many things I've been working on and these leagues (such as the PTL) are a good way to prepare for big tournaments. You get into a zone by playing such leagues and PTL is definitely helpful.

Your big goals going ahead?

I've been No. 2 in India for a very long time. My highest ranking in singles was 300 in internationals and my goal is to go higher than that. To represent India in the Olympics and win a medal. I also want to play some Grand Slams and win big matches over there.

Whose your favourites among the current league of players?

I don't want to copy but there is a lot to learn from great players. I've always looked up to Roger Federer. He is always calm. Lots to imbibe from him on how he thinks, moves on the court and creates magic. From women, I absolutely love Ashleigh Barty. I feel my game style is close to hers. She's very aggressive. At the moment, I like to watch a lot of matches of Novak Djokovic and Iga Swiatek.

While the Pro Veri Supersmashers have had a forgettable run in the ongoing PTL, Riya's career has surely taken off with a lot of promise.

The then-18-year-old Raducanu catapulted her career to new heights when she won 10 matches without dropping a set to claim the U.S. Open title, beating Canadian Leylah Fernandez in the final.

"It's been great to receive my honour today from His Majesty the King - I feel extremely grateful," she said in a statement made to members of the media after receiving the MBE from King Charles at an investiture ceremony at Windsor Castle.
