Canada booked a showdown with Australia in the Davis Cup final after Felix Auger-Aliassime and Vasek Pospisil edged out Italians Matteo Berrettini and Fabio Fognini 7-6(2) 7-5 in a tightly fought decisive doubles affair on Saturday. The Canadians will be chasing their first title in the men's team competition when they take on 28-times champions Australia on Sunday in Malaga, Spain.

Down an early break in the first set, Auger-Aliassime let out a triumphant roar as he converted a break point with a forehand winner in the sixth game and never took his foot off the gas, sealing the tiebreak with an ace. Auger-Aliassime, sixth in the singles rankings, harnessed his powerful serve to fend off three break points in the final game and celebrated with a chest bump with Pospisil, who excelled at the competition despite beginning the week without any clothes after his bags were lost en route from a Challenger Tour event.

"Davis Cup is always a wild week and I would say the most fun, as a player," Pospisil said. "We got more to do."

Auger-Aliassime was brought in as a last-minute substitution on the doubles team after compatriot Denis Shapovalov lost earlier in the day to Lorenzo Sonego 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-4 in a physically punishing marathon match.

"We knew coming this week that we could make some changes depending on how singles went and I just feel like the whole team connected around this idea and there was no ego in the wrong places," said Auger-Aliassime.

"Everybody just has the clear idea of the main goal, which is lifting the cup tomorrow."

Earlier in the day, Auger-Aliassime sent over a dozen aces as he handily beat Lorenzo Musetti 6-3 6-4 to keep Canada alive.

Davis Cup 2022: Canada beat Italy in second semi-final, set up summit clash with Australia

Canada beat Germany 2-1 to reach the Davis Cup semi-finals where they will face Italy who advanced earlier on Thursday with a stunning upset of the United States in Malaga, Spain. Vasek Pospisil and Denis Shapovalov clinched the winning point for Canada with a 2-6 6-3 6-3 triumph over Kevin Krawietz and Tim Puetz in the decisive doubles match. The victory in front of a crowd that included plenty of Canada supporters, was all the more impressive considering the German duo had entered the match 8-0 when paired together at the Davis Cup and clinched the winning point seven times.

"Having this kind of crowd support really helps kind of carry the momentum all the way to the end and I felt like Denis and I were playing better and better," Pospisil said in his on-court interview.

"It's really tough because we don't play too much doubles throughout the year so it's a challenge to be sharp out there but given the circumstances, I thought we played extremely well, especially as the match went on."

After dropping the first set, Pospisil and Shapovalov found their footing and consolidated early breaks in the second and third sets before sealing the win on their second match point when Shapovalov ripped a crosscourt forehand winner.

Canada's Felix Auger-Aliassime had forced the decider when he brushed aside Oscar Otte 7-6(1) 6-4 after Jan-Lennard Struff gave Germany an early lead with a 6-3 4-6 7-6(2) win over Shapovalov.

Canada, whose best finish in the competition came in 2019 when they finished runners-up to Spain, will play Italy on Saturday while Australia and Croatia meet on Friday in the other semi-final.

In the day's first quarter-final, Italy remained on course for a first Davis Cup crown since 1976 with a 2-1 win over the United States as the doubles pair of Simone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini beat Jack Sock and Tommy Paul in a thrilling decider.

American Taylor Fritz had levelled the tie at 1-1 after Lorenzo Sonego gave Italy a shock lead, and Bolelli and Fognini produced a flawless display in their 6-4 6-4 win to help their country reach the semis for the first time since 2014.

Earlier, Sonego held his nerve in a tight second set to get past Frances Tiafoe 6-3 7-6(7) and put Italy -- who are without the injured duo of Matteo Berrettini and Jannik Sinner -- ahead.

But Italy's joy was shortlived as Fritz dragged the record 32-time winners back into the tie, battling from the brink in the first set tiebreak to beat Lorenzo Musetti 7-6(8) 6-3 and set up the doubles decider.

American Taylor Fritz outlasted Felix Auger-Aliassime in three sets and Rafa Nadal avoided matching his worst-ever losing sequence with a 7-5 7-5 victory over Norway's Casper Ruud in round-robin play at the ATP Finals on Thursday. In a clash of tournament debutantes neither Fritz nor Auger-Aliassime could make inroads on the other's serve but in the first set tiebreaker, the Canadian's normally solid backhand began to misfire and a forehand error put Fritz out ahead. The players remained on serve in the second to bring about another breaker that Fritz appeared to have in hand while leading 4-2. But an errant ball toss produced Fritz's first double fault and shifted momentum in favour of Auger-Aliassime, who pumped his fist after slapping a crosscourt winner to force a deciding set.

The key game of the match came with Fritz leading 3-2 in the third when he finally got his first looks at break points, converting his fourth opportunity when Auger-Aliassime pulled a forehand wide. Fritz rolled from there, holding to love to consolidate the break and jumping in the air when Auger-Aliassime pushed a backhand out on match point, his 36th unforced error.

"It was tough, no one really had any chances early on," Fritz said after his 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-2 win. "I had to just not get frustrated, had to reset. I felt going into the third that a break was coming." Fritz will face Novak Djokovic in the semi-finals. Nadal had already been eliminated from semi-final contention when he walked on court in Turin after back-to-back straight-sets defeats in the Green Group by Fritz and Auger-Aliassime. But the Spaniard was clearly eager not to end a season that began in such spectacular fashion by succumbing to a fifth successive defeat -- something the 36-year-old had not experienced since before his career took off in 2004-05.

The first set was full of intensity inside the Pala Alpitour where the afternoon crowd were firmly behind Nadal. Nadal fought off two break points at 4-4 in the opening set as Ruud threatened but after that the Mallorcan found the range on his forehand. The 23-year-old Ruud went down 0-40 on serve at 5-6 and world number two Nadal needed just one chance to seal the set, punching away a volley into an empty court. It was a similar story in the second set with nothing between the players until Nadal pounced again in the 12th game. Ruud saved one match point but Nadal clubbed away a backhand winner to finish his season on a high.

"I've been practising well but just not had enough matches to be at the level I need to be, not enough confidence after six tough months," Nadal said. "At least I finished with a positive victory which is important." Ruud still advanced to the semi-finals but is now 0-8 against opponents ranked in the top three.

Wimbledon will relax its strict rules on white clothing at the championships and allow women players to wear dark undershorts and relieve a potential source of anxiety when they have their periods, the All England Club said on Thursday. Organisers of the grasscourt Grand Slam said the decision was taken following talks with women's tennis organising body WTA, clothing manufacturers and medical teams on how best to support women and girls competing in tournaments.

"We are committed to supporting the players and listening to their feedback as to how they can perform at their best," All England Club Chief Executive Sally Bolton said in a statement. "I'm pleased to confirm that, following consultation with players and representatives of several stakeholder groups, the Committee of Management has taken the decision to update the white clothing rule at Wimbledon. "This means that from next year, women and girls competing at The Championships will have the option of wearing coloured undershorts if they choose. "It is our hope that this rule adjustment will help players focus purely on their performance by relieving a potential source of anxiety."

Organisers said requirements for other clothing, accessories and equipment remain unchanged. The issue of women athletes wearing white clothing came up at this year's Wimbledon, when female players spoke about the anxiety of being forced to wear white. England soccer player Beth Mead was also questioned about the national team's all-white kit at this year's women's European Championship and said it was sometimes not practical. Several English women's club soccer teams have also opted to avoid wearing white shorts.

Men's tennis governing body ATP on Thursday announced a record increase of $37.5 million in prize money to $217.9 million for the 2023 season. The overall prize money pot was for both the ATP and Challenger Tours, with ATP Tour players collectively taking home an additional $18.6 million of on-site prize money from next year, the ATP said in a statement. Earlier this year, the ATP had announced that purses on the Challenger Tour would receive a significant boost.

"The record increase also includes a significant uplift on the ATP Challenger Tour, which will see on-site prize money grow by 75%, from $12.1 million to $21.1 million," the ATP said. In June, the men's governing body said players and tournaments will share profits 50-50 from 2023 as part of its OneVision plan - primarily aimed at boosting revenue from media and television rights.

ATP Tour announces mammoth increase in prize money for 2023 season

Rafa Nadal was eliminated from the ATP Finals as Casper Ruud beat American Taylor Fritz in their round-robin match in Turin on Tuesday, which also guaranteed that teenager Carlos Alcaraz would end the year as world number one.

Spaniard Nadal needed to win the tournament to take the rankings top spot from compatriot Alcaraz, but straight-set losses to Fritz on Sunday and Felix Auger-Aliassime earlier on Tuesday left him needing Ruud to lose in straight sets to keep his hopes alive.

The Norwegian, however, won the first set 6-3 against Fritz, capitalising on his much improved serve.

Fritz responded to take the second and it was anyone's match in the third-set tiebreak when Ruud let a 5-1 lead slip away and an energized Fritz levelled at 6-6 in their first career meeting.

But Ruud kept his composure and sealed the 6-3 4-6 7-6(6) win on his third match point to reach the semi-finals of the tournament for the second consecutive year.

"It was a close one," Ruud said.

"I guess we were both nervous there at the end but luckily I was able to pull through."

The 19-year-old Alcaraz, who is not competing at the tournament due to an abdominal injury, will be confirmed as the youngest year-end number one since the ATP rankings began in 1973.

With his 6-3 6-4 loss to Canada's Auger-Aliassime, the record 22-times Grand Slam champion Nadal has now lost four successive ATP Tour matches for the first time since 2009.

Auger-Aliassime, now coached by Nadal's uncle and long-time mentor Toni who sat in his box, will face Fritz in his final group match with a chance of making the last four.

"I had one match to get used to the conditions and I felt my game was better today, I was hitting it with precision and consistency," Auger-Aliassime said.

It was a disappointing display by Nadal who looked rusty having played only one tournament since the U.S. Open.

"There are a couple of positive things. I was able to play two tournaments in the past three weeks. That's a positive, something that I was not able to do for a while," Nadal said.

"I guess we were both nervous there at the end but luckily I was able to pull through." Also Read: Felix Auger-Aliassime leaves Rafael Nadal's title hopes at ATP Finals in tatters with straight-sets win The 19-year-old Alcaraz, who is not competing at the tournament due to an abdominal injury, will be confirmed as the youngest year-end number one since the ATP rankings began in 1973. "I don't think I forgot how to play tennis, how to be strong enough mentally. I just need to recover all these positive feelings and all this confidence and all this strong mentality that I need to be at the level that I want to be. Serbian tennis ace Novak Djokovic is all set to take part in the Australian Open next year as he is likely to be granted a visa. The Australian authorities have decided to revoke the three-year ban imposed on him last year and allow him to participate in the tournament.

Djokovic missed the competition last year due to a visa issue and was deported from Australia for not being vaccinated against COVID-19. In January this year, Djokovic's visa was cancelled after he landed in Australia for the Australian Open with an 'exemption permission'.

He was later deported from the country after fighting a legal battle and was handed a three-year ban from entering Australia, casting doubts over his participation in the Australian Open in 2023. However, the Australian government has now reportedly decided to overturn the ban despite the 21-time Grand Slam champion still being unvaccinated.

As per Australia's national broadcaster ABC and several other leading Aussie outlets, the Australian government is keen on overturning Djokovic's ban to allow him to participate in the 2023 edition of the tournament. Reports suggest Australian Immigration Minister Andrew Giles has decided to give the nod to Djokovic to return to the country next year.

The Australian government had revoked Djokovic's visa and deported him earlier this year citing 'health and good order grounds'. The deportation resulted in Djokovic failing to launch a title defence at the Australian Open as his arch-rival Rafael Nadal went on to clinch the tournament to bag his 21st Grand Slam crown.

Djokovic, who has won the Australian Open nine times in his career so far, was asked about his horrid experience in Australia this year during an interview with a Serbian website. The 21-Grand Slam champion said he is over what had happened and just wants to play tennis going forward.

"I am over what happened this year and I just want to play tennis, it is what I do best. Australia has always been the place where I have played my best tennis, the results speak for themselves, so I am always extra motivated to go there. This time even more so. I am hoping for a positive answer," Djokovic said.

Taylor Fritz stunned Rafa Nadal 7-6(3) 6-1 to make a winning debut at the ATP Finals in Turin while Norway's Casper Ruud kick-started the round-robin stage earlier on Sunday with a win over Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime. Spanish top seed Nadal arrived in Italy having only competed in one singles match since his fourth-round U.S. Open loss two months ago and his lack of recent competition showed as he was unable to keep pace with Fritz as the match wore on.

"I need more matches to play at this kind of level, even if I am practising well, much better than how I am competing, without a doubt. That's normal," Nadal told reporters. "At the end is not the ideal tournament and probably part of the season to come back after a couple of months without being on the tour because you don't have time to get confidence."

Nadal grabbed a 6-5 lead in the opening set when he held to love for a fifth time but then lost the opening three points of the tiebreaker and could not find his way back. After neither player dropped serve in the first set, Fritz broke early in the second for a 3-1 lead and again to pull ahead 5-1 before closing out the match on his next service game when Nadal sent a forehand long. "Once I got through that first set I just wanted to do the same thing I was doing for the second set: take care of my serve and just look to capitalise on the break points when I got them," Fritz said in his on-court interview.

"I knew coming out here this was going to be a big match if I want to make it out of the group, it's a really important one." For Fritz, the victory marked his first over a top-three opponent in 12 attempts and improved him to 2-2 in head-to-head meetings with Nadal having beaten him at Indian Wells in March. Canadian Auger-Aliassime has been in sublime form at the end of the season, winning three tournaments in a row before a semi-final run at the Paris Masters, but was not at his best while falling 7-6(4) 6-4 to Ruud.

Although he fired 26 winners past world number four Ruud, they were offset by 26 unforced errors as the Norwegian wrapped up the victory to get on the board in the Green Group, which also has Nadal and Fritz. "I think this is some of the best level that I've played since the U.S. Open," said Ruud, who reached the final of the year's last Grand Slam in New York. "The last couple of months have been a little bit of a struggle, I have to honestly say that, but you have to accept it as well. You will face difficult moments in your career, and maybe these last couple of months was one of those."

Auger-Aliassime had won 16 matches in a row to win titles in Florence, Antwerp and Basel last month. But Ruud, a semi-finalist last year, stamped his authority in the tiebreak and did not face a single break point in the match as he beat the Canadian for the second time this year

A news report, by Inside Sport, recently stated that Sania-Shoaib’s close friend has confirmed their separation. He revealed, "Yes, they are officially divorced now. I can’t disclose more than that but can confirm that they have separated." Meanwhile, both Sania and Shoaib have not responded to these rumours.

Talking of Sania's viral Instagram post, it might be perceived as a strong hint towards a split, however, it can also have any other meaning. There are chances that all this might be nothing but just a difficult phase in their relationship.

The rumours spread like wildfire when recently Shoaib was clueless on being asked about his wife's tennis academies and their locations. In one of the recent Pakistani cricket shows ‘Ask The Pavilion’, Malik's reaction caught everyone's attention when he said, "I don’t really have proper information about the locations.” He added, "I have never been to any of those academies." The former Pakistan captain's response shocked ex-pacer and panellist Waqar Younis who said, "What sort of husband you are?"

One still hopes for all this to be sheer rumours and nothing else!

Sania Mirza's Instagram post goes viral amid divorce rumours with husband Shoaib Malik

France's Caroline Garcia scored the biggest victory of her career with a straight-sets defeat of Aryna Sabalenka to win the season-ending WTA Finals on Monday. Garcia relied on a superb service game to overpower her Belarusian opponent 7-6 (7/4), 6-4 at Fort Worth, Texas. The 29-year-old from Lyon is only the second French player to win the WTA title after Amelie Mauresmo in 2005.

With sixth-seeded Garcia and seventh-seeded Sabalenka serving beautifully throughout, Monday's final was settled by the finest of margins. Garcia seized the initiative in the first set tie-break after both women had held to get it 6-6. Remarkably, neither player conceded a break point during a hard-fought first set. But the question of who would blink first was answered in the breaker as Sabalenka's composure suddenly deserted her.

A wayward Sabalenka backhand return plopped into the net to give Garcia a 4/2 lead in the tie-break. On the next point, Sabalenka double-faulted to hand the Frenchwoman a 5/2 lead. Garcia brought up four set points with an ace for a 6/2 lead. Although Sabalenka recovered to win the next two points, she double-faulted again to hand Garcia the set. A clearly rattled Sabalenka was soon in trouble in the second set, suffering a break on the first game after Garcia drilled a winner up the line. That break proved decisive as Garcia never looked like surrendering the initiative, holding for the remainder of the set before serving for the match at 5-4.

She earned her first match point when Sabalenka yanked a backhand return wide for a 40-30 lead. Although Sabalenka saved that match point with a backhand down the line, Garcia regained match point with a booming serve before converting on the next point.

France's Caroline Garcia defeats Aryna Sabalenka to seal WTA Finals victory

Aryna Sabalenka stunned world number one Iga Swiatek 6-2 2-6 6-1 on Sunday to set up a WTA Finals championship showdown with Caroline Garcia after the Frenchwoman cruised past Maria Sakkari in Fort Worth, Texas. Swiatek had not dropped a set at the season-ending tournament but was subdued by the powerful forehand of the Belarusian, who sealed the massive upset with one of her 12 aces before pumping her fist in triumph.

"The only thing I had in my mind was just make her work. And that's it," Sabalenka said. "It's only because of that I was able to show unbelievable tennis tonight and get this win." After trading breaks early in the first set, Sabalenka, who lost to the Pole in the U.S. Open semi-finals in September, easily converted a couple of chances as Swiatek stumbled with a series of uncharacteristic mistakes.

Swiatek returned with a new resolve in the second set, sweeping the first four games with the momentum seemingly on her side. But world number seven Sabalenka dug in her heels in the third set, dropping only two of her first-serve points without facing a break point to claim her third career win over a number one opponent.

"I just said that I have to stay aggressive and I have to stay in the moment, that's it," she said. The win set up a rematch with a red-hot Garcia, who beat her en route to winning the Cincinnati title. The Frenchwoman eased past Sakkari 6-3 6-2 to reach her first WTA Finals championship match, sending down 19 winners and six aces to close out the tie in 75 minutes.

Garcia had needed three sets to beat Sakkari in Cincinnati three months ago but had a much smoother time of it on Sunday, breaking the Greek to love late in the first set before carrying the first four games of the second. "My game style today, she didn’t like it," Garcia said. A clumsy double-fault handed Sakkari a sorely needed breakpoint chance in the sixth game but Garcia snuffed out the chance with an ace and maintained the momentum. Garcia thrust her hands into the air as Sakkari whacked the ball into the net on the second match point, bouncing around the court in celebration having reached the biggest final of her career. Aryna Sabalenka goes past world no. 1 Iga Swiatek, sets up WTA Finals showdown with Caroline Garcia

Denmark’s Holger Rune stunned six-time world champion Novak Djokovic in the Paris Masters after coming back from a set down to win 3-6, 6-3, 7-5, making him the youngest to win the grand slam.

The 19-year-old sensation was playing his first Masters 1000 final on Sunday where he held his nerve in the decider against the swashbuckling Serbian to take the biggest title of his career.

He is the youngest winner of the Paris tournament since Boris Becker in 1986, and he will be the first Danish to enter the top 10 of the world rankings on Monday.

“I want to start by saying huge congrats to Novak also,” he said to Djokovic, who is 16 years his senior, in his post-match interview.

“You’re one of my favourite players, I’ve been watching you since I was a little kid, practising with you. It’s a pleasure to be able to share the court with you now.”

Describing one of his greatest achievements by defeating the great Novak, he said, “It means everything to me, a perfect way to finish the week…It was an incredible tournament."

Ahead of Sunday’s final, Djokovic had heaped praise on Rume saying how the latter “reminds me of myself”.

Before being pitted against Rune, Djokovic had won 21 of 22 matches since the start of Wimbledon.

The Serbian broke for a 3-1 lead as Rune served back-to-back double faults in the biggest final of his career to date.

Notably, the pair had an age gap of 16 years between them, which was the biggest in a Masters final since Rafael Nadal, then 19, defeated 35-year-old Andre Agassi in Montreal in 2005.

It’s a pleasure to be able to share the court with you now.” Describing one of his greatest achievements by defeating the great Novak, he said, “It means everything to me, a perfect way to finish the week…It was an incredible tournament." Ahead of Sunday’s final, Djokovic had heaped praise on Rume saying how the latter “reminds me of myself”. Denmark’s Holger Rune stuns Novak Djokovic to clinch Paris Masters

Nick Kyrgios has apologised to a fan he accused of being "drunk out of her mind" during his loss in this year's Wimbledon final and donated 20,000 pounds ($22,750) to a charity of her choice following a legal case.

Kyrgios, well known for his outbursts, complained to the umpire during his match against Novak Djokovic in July, saying that the fan had been talking to him during points.

Asked by the umpire to identify the fan, Kyrgios said: "The one with the dress, the one who looks like she's had about 700 drinks, bro!"

Anna Palus said that the 27-year-old Australian had defamed her by making "a reckless and entirely baseless allegation" and began legal action in August, adding any damages she wins would be donated to charity.

Kyrgios apologised in a statement released to British media by Knight Temple Law, which represented Palus.

"I told the umpire that a fan, who I now know to be Anna Palus, was distracting me during the match, believing that she was drunk," Kyrgios said in the statement.

"I accept that belief was mistaken, and I apologise.

"To make amends, I have donated 20,000 pounds to the Great Ormond Street Hospital Charity, a charity chosen by Ms Palus. I will not be commenting on this matter again."

"I cannot stretch. I couldn't serve well. I couldn't hit the forehand well. When I turn the body, I feel it. I feel the abdomen in so many movements."

"It's in a zone that I have problems, I have problems before," he added. "Let's see if it's the same problem as I felt before or not."

Paris Masters 2022, Carlos Alcaraz vs Holger Rune: When and where to watch live streaming of QF match?

Rafael Nadal was defeated by Tommy Paul on Wednesday at the Rolex Paris Masters, giving him his biggest career victory. The Spaniard`s title run and Carlos Alcaraz`s exit in the third round would have allowed Rafael Nadal to surpass his compatriot at the top of the rankings, but the American`s 3-6, 7-6(4), 6-1 triumph prevented that. Instead, the American denied the World No. 2 a potential return to the top of the ATP Rankings.

"It`s probably my best win. I was obviously pumped for the matchup because it`s always interesting when you play one of the Big Three. I`ve only played him the second time, but the first time I was so nervous. It was weird, this time I wasn`t really nervous. I was pretty relaxed going onto the court and the day before. I think that played a role. I came out playing pretty well. He got the first set, but I feel like I played pretty well from the jump," Paul said as quoted by ATP. After a sluggish start to the Paris evening session, Paul was down a set and a break before breaking Nadal at love to even the match at 2-2. From that point on, the American took control and used his aggressive baseline game to generate three more break chances before winning the set in the tie-break. Paul took an early lead in the decider thanks to a wayward service game from Nadal, and the American pushed home his advantage after surviving a thrilling game to hold for 3-1. After climbing out of a 0/40 hole on the return, Nadal came within millimetres of tying the set, but a potential winner landed just wide and Nadal`s challenge was unsuccessful. The critical hold was made possible by a successful Paul challenge at deuce that erased a Nadal winner on the same sideline.

In the following game, Paul increased his lead by scoring a winner and showcasing his quickness to chase down a drop shot and break for the fourth time. The game was over after two hours, and 32 minutes, following a fifth break. In his first ATP Tour match since the US Open and his first as a father, Nadal displayed glimpses of brilliance but was unable to maintain it, especially down the stretch when he appeared out of sorts. When he hunted down a lob in set two, he made a highlight-reel play by choosing a spinning forehand over a tweener and hooking it past a dumbfounded Paul for a passing-shot winner. After the loss, Nadal may focus on the Nitto ATP Finals, which will happen from November 13-20.

Paris Masters 2022: Lorenzo Musetti beats Casper Ruud to enter quarter-finals

Defending champion Novak Djokovic opened his Paris Masters campaign with a routine 7-6(1) 6-4 win over Maxime Cressy on Tuesday, while Andrey Rublev and Hubert Hurkacz stayed in the hunt for a place at the ATP Finals with straight-sets victories.

Djokovic, a six-times winner at the ATP Masters 1000 event in the French capital, was made to toil in the opening set by Cressy but emerged unscathed after the American double-faulted twice in the tiebreak.

The Serbian raised his game in the second set, breaking his opponent at 4-4 before serving out the match with ease.

"It was very intense, just a lot of pressure. When you play someone that serves this well - first and second serve - you don't have much room to relax and maybe play kind of a softer few games," said 21-times major champion Djokovic.

"A break came at the right time, perfect time actually. I was very pleased with the way I held my serve, didn't face a break point."

Earlier, Rublev was solid on return as he broke the big-serving John Isner three times to progress 6-2 6-3 in just over an hour and claim his first win in four career meetings against the American.

"It is a really important win at this moment when I am fighting for Turin," said the 25-year-old, who is vying for one of the two remaining spots at the season-ending ATP Finals.

"I think I was a bit lucky. It was his first tournament since his bad injury. From the baseline I was feeling really confident. As soon as I was returning and the ball was in play, I felt I had an advantage and wasn't nervous."

Tennis trailblazer Billie Jean King has spent her life fighting for gender equality and championing the rights of the LGBTQ community so it would hardly be surprising if she joined the long list of those criticising Qatar as World Cup hosts.

The American, however, believes staging soccer's blue-riband tournament in the conservative Gulf Arab state can open minds and become a power for good. Qatar's treatment of migrant workers and restrictive social laws which prohibit same-sex relationships has led many to question world governing body FIFA's decision.

But King, who in 2009 was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom for her advocacy work on behalf of women and the LGBTQ community, points the fact that the WTA Tour she helped create used to stage its end-of-season tournament in Doha. Asked if she would be happy to host the Billie Jean Cup finals, which begins this month in Glasgow, in Qatar, she said: "I probably would be because, first of all, the WTA went there years ago.

"I get a lot of different people coming to me saying 'why would you play there the way they treat women?' "But personally I think it's important to show up and be an influencer. I think it's delicate, no question. But I think it's important to go if you get the opportunity and everything else fits too, not just go there for money or whatever."

Qatar’s government has said its labour system is a work in progress, but denied a 2021 Amnesty report that thousands of migrant workers were still being exploited. Organisers of the World Cup, which starts on Nov. 20, say that everyone, no matter their sexual orientation or background, is welcome.

Ninth seed Taylor Fritz kept his hopes of qualifying for the season-ending ATP Finals alive when he was among four Americans to record straight sets victories at the Paris Masters on Monday to move into the second round. Fritz, the highest-seeded American in the draw beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 7-5 6-2 on the back of a decent first serve despite trailing by a break in the opening set.

Fritz hit only 11 winners to the Spaniard's 20 but he converted five break points to wrap up the match in 90 minutes to beat Davidovich Fokina for the first time in three meetings. "Really happy, he's a tough person to play against. He's got weapons on both sides, he's extremely quick as well, so there's nowhere you can really play with a lot of safety," Fritz said. "He makes a lot of crazy shots and he's beaten me the past two times."

Fritz needs to reach the final to have any chance of sealing a place in the ATP Finals in Turin ahead of Andrey Rublev or Felix Auger-Aliassime, who has won his last three tournaments. "Turin is still in the picture, obviously, but there's not much else I really could have done. I won Tokyo," he added.

The towering 37-year-old Isner, who finished runner-up to Andy Murray in 2016, fired 19 aces in the contest to wrap things up in 82 minutes.

French wildcard Gilles Simon battled back from a set down to beat Britain's Andy Murray 4-6 7-5 6-3. Frances Tiafoe also moved into the second round without conceding a break point with a 6-4 6-4 win over Lorenzo Sonego while fellow American Maxime Cressy ousted Argentine Diego Schwartzman 6-3 6-3.

World number one Iga Swiatek said she was left feeling confused after Simona Halep was handed a provisional ban for doping and hoped there would be more clarity soon on the future of the Romanian player she has looked up to.

Two-times major winner Halep was provisionally suspended by the International Tennis Integrity Agency this month after she tested positive for the banned blood-booster roxadustat.

Halep was tested during the U.S. Open and both her A and B samples confirmed the presence of the anti-anaemia drug that stimulates the production of red blood cells, much like the prohibited substance Erythropoietin.

"Well, for sure it was confusing to me because I wouldn't expect hearing this news. Simona, from my point of view, seems like a person who always cared about being fair and she was a great example for me," Swiatek said, speaking ahead of the WTA Finals tournament which begins in Fort Worth, Texas on Monday.

Halep had described the ban as the "biggest shock of her life" and denied knowingly taking any banned substance.

"I don't know how it works in terms of the system ... Is she going to be tested a couple of more times or whatever? Hopefully it's going to be more clear for fans and for us," Swiatek added.

Halep's ex-coach Darren Cahill, who worked with the former world number one for six years and guided her to her first Grand Slam title, said last week there was "no chance" she had knowingly taken a prohibited substance.

World No. 5 Daniil Medvedev had to battle hard against Dominic Thiem on Thursday at the Erste Bank Open, but the top seed`s persistence paid off as he scripted a 6-3, 6-3 second-round win in Vienna. Both players came out firing in a hard-fought opening set. Thiem delighted the home crowd with some pure hitting off both wings from the baseline, while Medvedev countered with some trademark rebellious defence.

After claiming the first break of the match for 4-3, the top seed`s variety of consistent, strong hitting came to the fore as he clinched a 98-minute victory."It was a tough match. Around one hour, 40 minutes, you know when it`s one hour, 40 minutes, even if you win 6-3, 6-3, that it was a tough match. It could have gone either way. At one moment in the match, I started to put a lot of pressure on his serve. I was serving good myself, so didn`t (give) him too many opportunities on my serve, and that was the key today I think," ATP.com quoted Medvedev as saying after his win.

"That was the first game in the match where I actually won the first point on his serve. Otherwise, it was 40/0 for him all the time, so a little bit tougher to break. In this game, I managed to put pressure on him. He had two or three game points where I managed to bring it back to deuce which is really important. Medvedev will next play sixth seed Jannik Sinner, who defeated Francisco Cerundolo 7-5, 6-3. Hubert Hurkacz also cruised into the quarter-finals by holding his nerve to claim a deciding-set win against Emil Ruusuvuori. The fifth seed reacted well to dropping the second set against the Finn, running to an unassailable 4-1 lead before clinching a 7-5, 4-6, 6-3 triumph in which he struck 41 winners. A confident show helped Grigor Dimitrov defeat Andrey Rublev 6-3, 6-4 in 71 minutes. Dimitrov`s quarter-final opponent will be Marcos Giron, who defeated Cameron Norrie in impressive style with a 6-3, 6-4 win.

Dmitry Tursunov said he decided not to continue coaching Emma Raducanu at the end of a trial period with the former U.S. Open champion as they could not agree terms and there were "red flags" he could not ignore.

Raducanu won the U.S. Open title in 2021 but has since fallen to 76th in the WTA rankings. The 19-year-old Briton has been without a full-time coach since splitting with German Torben Beltz in April and spent some time this year working with Tursunov. The Russian left Raducanu's camp at the end of their trial period and is now coaching Olympic champion Belinda Bencic.

"I was walking away from Emma regardless of whether there was another (player) available or not. We didn't agree on the terms and there were some red flags that just couldn't be ignored," he told tennismajors.com in an interview published on Wednesday. "Our trial period was over at the U.S. Open but I stuck around, trying to see if there was going to be a way to impress the team."
