Virat Kohli once again had a disappointing outing with the bat during Rohit Sharma-led India's 100-run loss at the hands of England in the second and penultimate ODI, on Thursday (July 14) at Lord's. After Indian bowlers once again did a fine job and dismissed Jos Buttler & Co. for 246, many expected the Indian batters to come to the party and help visitors take an unassailable 2-0 lead.

However, none of the Indian batters played a long inning to take the team forward in the chase as they fell for a paltry 146 in 38.5 overs. Talking about Kohli -- whose last fifty for India came in mid-February this year and his century-drought continues since late 2019 -- the No. 3 batter struck some wondeful boundaries before falling for a 25-ball 16, off David Willey. Thus, skipper Rohit was asked about Kohli in the post-match presser and the 35-year-old has backed his predecessor once again. For the unversed, Rohit looked puzzled by yet another question on Kohli's form, however, he carried on to share his thoughts.

WATCH: 'Why is it happening?' - Rohit Sharma on talks regarding under-fire Virat Kohli

While world cricket remains busy in comparing Virat Kohli and Babar Azam, undoubtedly two of the greatest batters in the modern era, Babar won hearts with his tweet for Kohli, who has been under-fire due to his low returns with the bat.

After Kohli got out for 16 (25) in Rohit Sharma & Co.'s 100-run defeat versus England in the 2nd ODI, on Thursday (July 14) at Lord's, Babar took to his official Twitter handle and shared a sweet message for the former Indian captain.
For the unversed, Kohli hasn't been in form for a long time. While his century-drought continues, with his last triple-figure knock coming in late 2019, the 33-year-old hasn't crossed the fifty-run mark for India across formats since February 18, 2022. One can argue that India haven't played a lot and Kohli has also been rested several times, however, he has looked a pale shadow of himself for quite some time. In IPL 2022, he struggled for his 341 runs, at a strike-rate of 115.98, with only two fifties whereas in the ongoing England tour, he has so far had scores of 11, 20, 1, 11, and 16, respectively.

'This too shall pass' - Babar Azam wins hearts with his tweet for Virat Kohli, backs him to end lean patch

Hardik Pandya has had a stellar time since IPL 2022. In the 15th IPL season, which saw him make a comeback at the competitive level after last year's T20 World Cup, Hardik returned with his best-ever tally as a batter (487 runs) and claimed eight scalps, including a match-winning three-fer in the season-finale as Gujarat Titans (GT) won their maiden championship on debut.

Hardik's stocks rose considerably after leading Gujarat to a historic title as captain. Making a comeback for India in the home T20Is versus South Africa, the all-rounder fulfilled both roles and was also Rishabh Pant's deputy. Further, he was appointed as the Indian captain during the second-stringed side's twin T20Is versus Ireland, in Dublin, which Men in Blue won 2-0. In the India-England T20Is, the 28-year-old scored his maiden fifty in the format. Hence, he is on a roll, however, question marks remain on his ability to bowl his full quota of overs in ODIs. So far, he has bowled regularly in T20Is, nonetheless, it remains to be seen if he can complete his full overs in the 50-over format.

In this regard, Hardik-led Gujarat franchise's head coach Ashish Nehra made an interesting remark. "Even Hardik won’t be able to answer that since you can plan but things don’t always fall into place. But so far so good. Hardik can be in any white ball team solely as a batter. On top of that, if he bowls, it will be a bonus. But you can’t keep him as your fifth bowler in T20 or 50 overs. He can only be your sixth bowler," Nehra was quoted as saying by Telegraph India.

The 2011 ODI World Cup winner further added, "But looking at his fitness, you have to build it up slowly. He will not be going to the West Indies for ODIs, which is good in a way. When you are an out-and-out fast bowler, you don’t have a choice. You have to bowl, you have to be fit... But it’s not the case with Hardik. He has been doing well during the last 2-3 months."

Hardik bowled only four overs, conceding 22 runs and being wicketless, in India's ODI series opener versus hosts England at The Oval, London. He is already among wickets in the ongoing second and penultimate ODI, on Thursday (July 14) at Lord's, and will slowly aim to regularly finish his full quota of overs in white-ball formats.

ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 2nd ODI match - IST time and streaming details

Rohit Sharma-led India played England in the ODI series opener at the Kennington Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). The visitors demolished the hapless Jos Buttler-led side and won the game by ten wickets, with less than 50 overs being bowled overall, to take a 1-0 lead in the process.

While Jasprit Bumrah (6 for 19) and skipper Rohit (58-ball 76 not out) were exceptional for the Men in Blue, Md Shami and Prasidh Krishna were also among the wickets whereas Shikhar Dhawan played a sedate knock to stitch an unbeaten 114-run opening stand with his captain. Speaking of Virat Kohli, whose form remains a cause of concern, the 33-year-old former skipper wasn't part of India's playing XI due to a slight niggle. Thus, the England fan club, i.e. the Barmy Army took this as a chance to troll Kohli.

However, Bharat Army -- Indian counterparts -- were quick to respond and trolled the Barmy Army in an epic manner. Here's the banter which caught the attention of many on the social media platform Twitter:

ENG vs IND, 1st ODI: Rohit Sharma's mammoth six hits young spectator, halts play briefly - WATCH

Virat Kohli remains a huge topic of discussion in world cricket with him not performing upto his usual standards at the international level. While his century-drought continues since late 2019, the 33-year-old had a rusty IPL 2022 -- ending with only 341 runs at a strike rate of 115.98 -- and has flopped so far in India's tour of England.

In the one-off Test against Ben Stokes & Co., in Edgbaston, Kohli returned with scores of 11 and 20 before he only managed 1 and 11 in the last two T20Is in the recently-concluded bilateral series. ENG vs IND: Rohit Sharma visits 6-year-old young girl who was hit by Hitman's six in 1st ODI

Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern for Team India heading into the 2022 T20 World Cup. Kohli has so far had an dismal run in the ongoing England tour -- with scores of 11, 20, 1 and 11 in the one-off Test and last two T20Is respectively -- following an ordinary IPL 2022 edition.

Kohli's century-drought at the international level also continues, with him last reaching the triple-figure mark in late 2019 (during the pre-Covid era). Hence, things aren't at its best for the former Indian captain as calls for his omission has now started doing the rounds. Recently, former Indian skipper Kapil Dev opined that Kohli can also be dropped if he doesn't return to his best, however, ex-India pacer Ashish Nehra has backed the star batter.

“There will be discussions even if you're not a player of Kohli's calibre. When you are playing, you try to focus on your game and not listen to so-called 'outside voices' from people outside the dressing room. It's important how your teammates, management and selectors are backing you... but we are talking about a guy like Virat. Yes, it's not written anywhere that he will keep playing for India even if he doesn't score runs. But when you have done so much in the past, you will always get extra chances," said Nehra in a virtual interaction organised by Sony Sports.

“Everybody knows his accomplishments and the talent he has. At the age of 33, fitness isn't a problem for him. Everybody is hopeful that Virat will come good, the quicker the better. Let's hope we see a different Virat after the West Indies series. If he rests for a month or five odd weeks, it will be helpful for him.”

On Kapil Dev's recent comments on Kohli, suggesting him to be dropped, the 2011 ODI World Cup winner Nehra said, "Yes, you get dropped when you don't perform. However, there are many ifs and buts. When you're a player like Virat who has scored runs and done so much for the country, he can't be dropped straightaway. Yes, Virat hasn't been among runs but dropping him isn't the solution. We are discussing Virat as an example. Even Rohit struggled before returning to form in the 50-over game. But he struggled in this year's IPL and other Twenty20 games. With the emergence of all formats, a player who plays across all three will get more chances to score but he can fail too."

While the noise regarding Kohli's form continues to remain high, the 33-year-old missed the ODI series opener between India and England, at The Oval, on Tuesday (July 12) owing to groin injury.

If he rests for a month or five odd weeks, it will be helpful for him.” ALSO READ | ENG vs IND: After missing series opener, Virat Kohli likely to skip 2nd ODI with injury concerns - Report On Kapil Dev's recent comments on Kohli, suggesting him to be dropped, the 2011 ODI World Cup winner Nehra said, "Yes, you get dropped when you don't perform.
India were on a roll versus England in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (July 12), winning the game by ten wickets with less than 50 overs being played overall. Rohit Sharma-led India opted to bowl first and bundled out Jos Buttler & Co. for 110, their lowest ODI score versus the Men in Blue, as Jasprit Bumrah wreaked havoc with 6 for 19.

Jasprit Bumrah has reclaimed the No. 1 spot in the latest ICC Men's ODI Rankings for bowlers following his splendid show for Team India in their mammoth ten-wicket win over England in the three-match series opener, held on Tuesday (July 12) at The Oval, London.

Bumrah returned with his best-ever ODI bowling figures, taking 6 for 19 (second five-fer in the format overall), and also ended with the best-ever bowling spell in the format by an Indian in England. With this, he has reclaimed the top spot, which he had lost to New Zealand pacer Trent Boult in early 2020. He has been at the numero uno position for as many as 730 days, most by an Indian, ninth-most overall.

Along with Bumrah, Md Shami (3 for 31), Rohit Sharma (58-ball 76 not out) and Shikhar Dhawan (31* off 54 balls) also stood tall for India in their ten-wicket hammering of England. Thus, Shami has also progressed three slots to reach the joint-23rd position, with teammate Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Rohit has, meanwhile, closed the gap with third-ranked Virat Kohli in the batting chart, with only one rating point separating the two, as Dhawan inched up one slot to 12th position.

After his Player-of-the-Match performance, Bumrah said at the post-match presentation, "When there's swing and seam movement, it is very exciting in white-ball cricket to get that opportunity because you have to be defensive with the kind of pitches we usually get. When the wicket is flat your accuracy is tested. It is a good place to be when the ball is swinging. As soon as Shami bowled the first over, we had a conversation to go fuller. Very happy for him, he gets a lot of wickets. I told him when he beats the bat, that there would be days when he'd run through the side. When the ball is moving around, the keeper and the cordon is very active. Very happy that Rishabh has been working hard on his keeping as well as his batting."

Meanwhile, Indian captain, Rohit stated, "Looking at the overhead conditions and the pitch, the toss was a right call to make. We used the conditions upfront really well. We never worry about the conditions because we have got the guys who can just come out and use those conditions. There was some swing and seam upfront and we exploited them well. Jasprit Bumrah reclaims top spot among bowlers in ICC ODI Rankings after 6/19 vs England

Rohit Sharma-led India demolished England by ten wickets to win the 1st ODI, of the three-match series, at The Oval, London on Tuesday (July 12). India were on top from the word go, after opting to bowl first, as Jasprit Bumrah's 6 for 19 rattled England for a paltry 110 in 25.2 overs, and later captain Rohit's 58-ball 76 not out propelled India to a mammoth ten-wicket win, in 18.4 overs.

ENG vs IND: After missing series opener, Virat Kohli likely to skip 2nd ODI with injury concerns - Report

India and England were involved in a three-match T20I series, which ended on Sunday (July 10) in Edgbaston, Birmingham. With an unassailable 2-0 lead over Jos Buttler & Co., Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost the third and final T20I by 17 runs, in a high-scoring encounter, and will now face the hosts in the series opener of the three ODIs.

While India will look to bring their newly-found T20I aggressive approach in the 50-over format, it will be interesting to see how England respond to the 50-over format's challenges sans Eoin Morgan. This will be the first time that the current world champions will enter the field in the shorter format without their sole World Cup-winning skipper and, hence, there will be eyes on England's new captain Jos Buttler. Needless to say, they will still resort to their gung-ho approach, which has already come into play even in the purest format of the game.

IND vs ENG today match prediction: Who will win the first ODI between India and England?

BCCI's rest policy has become a major talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. While injury and Covid concerns have been a reason for India having as many as six captains in 2022 so far, the constant change in team and leadership has also been due to two teams playing simultaneously -- which was the case during the Ireland tour and the national side's ongoing trip to England.

With India's cricketing calendar being quite hectic, as is the case usually, the BCCI selection committee has also rested star players at regular intervals, leaving many former cricketers miffed. In Test matches, the mind and the body take a toll, I get that. But I don't think there is much problem in T20 cricket,"said Gavaskar on Sports Tak.

"I honestly feel that the BCCI needs to look into this concept of rest. All the Grade A cricketers have received very good contracts. They receive payment for every match. 'Tell me any company whose CEO or MD get so much off' - Sunil Gavaskar opines on BCCI's 'rest' policy

India`s star batter Virat Kohli is likely to miss out on the first ODI against England on Tuesday due to a suspected groin injury. After claiming victory in the three-match T20I series against England, Team India is all set to face them once again for a three-match ODI series. Virat did not come for optional practise on Monday ahead of the first ODI match at Kensington Oval, London. As per ANI`s sources in the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), he has a suspected groin injury and is unlikely to play the first ODI.

The source further stated that a medical test was conducted and it was found that the Virat has sustained mild strain. The former skipper could manage scores of only 11 and 20 in the fifth and final Test against Edgbaston and continued his bad performances in T20Is, where he could score only 12 runs in two innings. Also, Kohli had a sub-par IPL 2022, in which he could score only 341 runs in 16 games at an average of 22.73 and a sub-par strike rate of 115.98. He could score only two half-centuries in the tournament.

Virat Kohli likely to miss ODI series opener vs England due to injury concerns: Sources

Virat Kohli's form remains a cause of concern and a huge talking point in the Indian cricket fraternity. With the 2022 T20 World Cup right around the corner, many former cricketers and experts have shared their views regarding King Kohli, who has struggled to be at his usual best since the start of IPL 2022 edition and his century-drought continues since late 2019.

After the conclusion of the India-England T20Is, which India won 2-1, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar joined the bandwagon and commented on Kohli's form. While some have even questioned his place in the T20I line-up, Gavaskar came in Kohli's defence.

There are still two months for the team to be announced and even the Asia Cup is left. You can see the form there and choose your team. Give it some time."

In the England T20Is, Kohli was given rest for the series opener -- which commenced after a one-day break post the Edgbaston Test -- and he returned to the playing XI for the remaining two matches.
Talking about the series opener, played on Thursday, India opted to bat first and rode on quickfire knocks from Deepak Hooda (33), Suryakumar Yadav (39) and Hardik Pandya's 51 to post 198-8. In reply, Hardik starred with the bat to return with 4 for 33 whereas Yuzvendra Chahal and Arshdeep Singh accounted for two scalps each to dismiss England for 148 in 19.3 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "Great performance from ball one. All batters showed intent. Although the pitch was good, we played good shots and never got ahead of the game. You got to make use of those six overs in the powerplay. There is a certain approach we want to take in the powerplay. You got to back yourself in this game, sometimes it comes off, sometimes it doesn't. The whole batting unit needs to understand the direction the team is taking and the guys were spot on today. I was impressed with his (Hardik) bowling. He wants to do that a lot more in the future, bowled quick and used his variations too. Of course his batting is there for us to see. That's the reason we wanted to bat (ball swinging under lights). Sometimes it does swing in the evenings and we wanted to utilize that. Both the new ball bowlers used the swing and stopped their batters. We were sloppy on the field. Those catches should have been taken. Pretty sure we will field pretty well in the coming games."

All eyes are on the forthcoming Asia Cup 2022. The upcoming mega event will be held in Sri Lanka despite the political and economical unrest in the country. Amid the chaos in the Island nation, Sri Lanka Cricket Board (SLC) got the green light to host the tournament and it will be played in the T20I format.

This will be the second time that the Asia Cup will be held in the shortest format, as a preparation for the 2022 T20 World Cup. Moreover, this will also be the first time that the Asia Cup will take place after the 2018 edition. In 2018, Rohit Sharma-led India won the tournament, beating Bangladesh in a humdinger of a final, and the Men in Blue will be eager to win the trophy for the third time in a row (which will be seventh overall). ENG vs IND: When and where to watch England vs India 1st T20I match - IST time and streaming details

After the fifth and final rescheduled Test between England and India ended in a dramatic fashion for the visitors, in Edgbaston, Birmingham, the action shifts to the white-ball series, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each.

Rohit Sharma-led India will square off with Jos Buttler's England in the opening T20I of the three-match series, in Southampton, on Thursday (July 07). While India are also without some of its regulars such as Virat Kohli, Jasprit Bumrah, Rishabh Pant, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, England will look upon this series as the commencement of a new era under Buttler after the conclusion of the glorious Eoin Morgan-era. England, however, remains a strong side and will aim to continue in a similar manner in their new phase.

For India, they are now well ahead of this year's T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia. However, the South Africa home series and a near loss to Ireland in the second and final T20I will raise some questions. Does the team comprise the T20 tactical wherewithal to counter big-hitting sides on flat surfaces, which is very likely to be the case in Australia? The England series can answer some questions in this regard. The regulars will also return from the second and penultimate tie as the Men in Blue can now start playing their regular XI more often than not.

Match prediction for England vs India, 1st T20I: The surface at the Rose Bowl, Southampton has not been very high-scoring in this year's T20 Blast, with the average first-innings total being 165. Moreover, five out of he seven games have been won by sides batting first. Expect a good contest but England will start ahead of India, who are without many key players for the series opener.

Happy Birthday MS Dhoni: Virat Kohli, Suresh Raina lead wishes as former Indian skipper turns 41

England Test side has witnessed some major highs in the last few weeks. After whitewashing New Zealand 3-0 at home, Ben Stokes-led England beat India in the fifth and final rescheduled Test, in Edgabston, Birmingham, resorting to their newly-found bazball style of play; i.e. being more aggressive with the bat.

As a result, England have chased down three 275-plus totals versus New Zealand, on the trot, before beating India by chasing a mammoth 378-run target (being their most-successful Test run-chase). Thus, India's head coach Rahul Dravid shared his take on England's bazball approach after India missed a golden opportunity to win the five Tests 3-1 as the series ended in a 2-2 stalemate.

"People are talking a lot about Bazball. Some say this will change cricket entirely. As a coach what is your take on Bazball," a reporter asked Dravid during the press conference. To this, the former Indian captain-turned-coach politely responded with a smile and said, "Don't really know what's that."

He, however, lauded England's performances and added, "I would definitely say that the kind of cricket they have been playing in the last few months has been really good. They have been really good at chasing. That chasing is not easy in fourth innings in England. Whatever brand of cricket one wants to play, it depends a lot of the players and the kind of form they are in presently. When the players are in good form, your obviously play a more positive game, like we did in that innings where Pant and Jadeja were batting."

Talking about the final Test, which was rescheduled after Covid cases in the Indian camp during the 2021 English summer, India were without regular captain Rohit Sharma (who had tested positive for the deadly infection). In Jasprit Bumrah's leadership, India rode on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to post 416 after being asked to bat first. In reply, England were dismissed for 284, giving a sizeable 132-run lead before India only managed 245 in their second essay. Despite still chasing a big target, of 378, England were 109-3 before centuries from Joe Root and Jonny Bairstow took them to a historic seven-wicket series-levelling win.

To this, the former Indian captain-turned-coach politely responded with a smile and said, "Don't really know what's that." pic.twitter.com/CopF6Bqks0 — Guess Karo (@KuchNahiUkhada) July 5, 2022 × He, however, lauded England's performances and added, "I would definitely say that the kind of cricket they have been playing in the last few months has been really good. They have been really good at chasing. That chasing is not easy in fourth innings in England. Whatever brand of cricket one wants to play, it depends a lot of the players and the kind of form they are in presently. When the players are in good form, your obviously play a more positive game, like we did in that innings where Pant and Jadeja were batting." In Jasprit Bumrah's leadership, India rode on centuries from Rishabh Pant and Ravindra Jadeja to post 416 after being asked to bat first.
