The No. 1 ranked Indian team entered the Asia Cup 2022 edition -- being played in the shortest format as a dress rehearsal for the T20 World Cup -- as favourites and were expected to win the trophy for the third time in a row. Despite topping their group, India lost their opening two games in the Super Four round and bowed out of the multi-nation tournament with Pakistan-Sri Lanka making it to the final.

Thrashing Afghanistan by 101 runs on Thursday evening (September 8), India settled for the penultimate spot in the Super Four by signing off from the tournament with a total of three wins and two defeats (versus Pakistan and Sri Lanka, respectively). Losing to arch-rivals Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the last over, India have been slammed left, right and centre with many taking a dig at their preparations for the upcoming ICC event. Nonetheless, head coach Rahul Dravid came in India's defence and has reckoned that 'losing a couple of games doesn't make them a terrible team.'

"Irrespective of whether we would have won those games, you got to keep things in perspective. In T20s, the margins are so small. It's not that because we won that tight game against Pakistan, everything becomes perfect. We lost a couple of games, which had gone down on a wicket that wasn't easy to defend," Dravid said in an interview on Star Sports.

"A couple of injuries and illnesses means your balance the team goes whack. In tournaments such as these, the margins become very small. The whole point is not to overreact, we can tend to go to extremes at some time. The kind of environment we want to create is very balanced," the former Indian captain-turned-coach added.

India will now shift their focus to their twin T20I series, at home, versus Australia and South Africa, respectively. After that, the Rohit-led side will head to Australia in a bid to win their second T20 WC trophy.

'Because we lost few games, doesn't mean we're a terrible team'- Rahul Dravid defends under-fire Team India

After a forgettable run at the Asia Cup, India will look to amend their mistakes ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia from October-November. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is expected to announce the squad for the showpiece event sooner than later as many cricket boards have already announced their respective squads.

As per a report in the Times of India (TOI), the Indian team's squad for the upcoming ICC event is likely to be announced on September 16. Jasprit Bumrah's fitness is reportedly a reason behind the delay in squad announcement as the premier pacer is in rehab at the National Cricket Academy (NCA), Bengaluru after missing out on the Asia Cup due to a back injury. Moreover, Harshal Patel is also working on his fitness after not being part of the Rohit Sharma-led national side in the Asia Cup where the Men in Blue failed to make it to the final.

Thus, Bumrah's fitness is eagerly awaited by the BCCI before announcing the squad of the one-time winners heading into the T20 WC Down Under. With the marquee tournament just over a month away, the BCCI selectors are still not worried about Bumrah's fitness as he is expected to be deemed fit.

“Bumrah has not been declared fit yet. He is going to be at the NCA this week before the selection. The World Cup is still over a month away. Therefore, his selection will happen considering that,” a BCCI source told TOI. Given India's ordinary bowling performances in the continental tournament, being held in the UAE, India will be desperate to regain the services of both Bumrah and Harshal. Many are also discussing Mohammed Shami's inclusion despite the senior pacer having not played a single T20I since last year's World Cup in the UAE.

Given Shami's experience, good run in IPL 2022 and the the current Indian bowling line-up lagging behind, the 32-year-old might be roped in. After bowing out of the Asia Cup, India will host Australia followed by South Africa in T20I series before boarding the flight to Australia. It will be interesting to see what all changes the Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team management makes for the mega event.

Rohit Sharma-led Team India's T20 World Cup squad likely to be announced on September 16: Report

Ravindra Jadeja sustained a knee injury during the group stage of the Asia Cup 2022 edition. With him being ruled out, India went onto lose their first two games in the Super Four round and have bowed out of the competition with one game to play.

Jadeja's injury came as a huge setback for the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team in the continental tournament. He attained a wicket and remained economical versus Pakistan and Hong Kong, respectively, and played a crucial 29-ball 35 versus the Men in Green in Men in Blue's tournament-opener. While his knee surgery has been successful, he is expected to begin his rehabilitation to become fit for the 2022 T20 World Cup (head coach Rahul Dravid hasn't ruled out the possibility of his comeback as yet).

Despite him being a vital cog across formats for India, former Indian stumper and chief selector Saba Karim made a bold claim on the 33-year-old Jadeja. Karim feels Jaddu's comeback won't be that easy while speaking on Sports18. He said, “It's a tough phase for him because whenever he comes back, he has always done well and for him to get injured at such a critical juncture in his career is not so easy."

Karim added, "But I think with age, it may not be easy for him to do that. So I think he needs to go back and work on his rehab and then try and come back. But more importantly, I feel that it’s your mindset, the kind of preparation you do before you come back on the field after your injury."

India will be desperate to regain Jadeja's services going into the 2022 T20 WC, in Australia, given they fell flat in the Asia Cup following his exit.

India to lock horns with Australia, New Zealand in T20 World Cup warm-up matches

India will lock horns with Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka in their second game in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, on Tuesday evening (September 06). The clash holds a lot of significance for India after they lost to Babar Azam-led Pakistan, by five wickets, in their Super Four opener on Sunday (September 04) at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

Being asked to bat first versus their arch-rivals Pakistan, Rohit Sharma-led India rode on Virat Kohli's 44-ball 60 and vital knocks from KL Rahul-Rohit, some lusty blows from Deepak Hooda and Ravi Bishnoi to post a competitive 181/7 in 20 overs. In reply, Indian bowlers couldn't defend their total and lost on the penultimate ball of the contest. With this defeat, India are now in a must-win situation and have to win both their games to prevent a shocking exit from the continental tournament. Asia Cup 2022, IND vs Afg live streaming: When and where to watch India vs Afghanistan Super 4 match?

Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar opined on Rohit Sharma and his captaincy as Team India crashed out of the Asia Cup 2022. After India's six-wicket loss to Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 6) in the Super Four clash, the Men in Blue were on the brink of elimination and were finally ousted with Pakistan's one-wicket win over Afghanistan in a thriller on Wednesday (September 7).

Talking about India-Sri Lanka clash, Rohit-led India were asked to bat first and rode on the captain's 72 and contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin to post 173-8. However, it wasn't enough as fifties from the Sri Lankan openers Kusal Medis-Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksa's finishing knocks ensured the Islanders a six-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest.

After India's back-to-back defeats in the Super Four, Akhtar commented on their disheartening performances. He feels Asia Cup debacle is a wake-up call for the one-time winners ahead of the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October-November in Australia. He also insisted there is no need for a change in captaincy despite heavy criticism of Rohit Sharma but highlighted some concerns for Team India.

"You don't have to change the captain again. Rohit Sharma was looking uncomfortable, he was shouting and screaming. There is uncertainty in the Indian camp. In hindsight, this is a good wake up call for India. Now, India know what their final XI should be, especially with the T20 World Cup coming up," Akhtar said in a video on his YouTube channel.

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli attain big feats in India's forgettable Asia Cup clash vs Sri Lanka

India succcumbed to yet another defeat in the Super Four round of the Asia Cup 2022 edition, on Tuesday evening (September 06) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing to Pakistan on September 04 (Sunday), Rohit Sharma-led India were in a must-win scenario when they locked horns with Sri Lanka.

The No. 1 ranked Indian team were expected to go past the Lankans, despite the Pakistan setback, but ended on the losing side after failing to defend 173/8. Being asked to bat first, India rode on Rohit's 71, Suryakumar Yadav's 34, Hardik Pandya-Rishabh Pant's 17 each and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15* to post a competitive score, however, they failed to post anything over 190. In reply, the SL openers Kusal Medis-Pathum Nissanka's fifites and finishing cameos from Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksa propelled the Islanders to a stunning six-wicket win on the penultimate ball of the contest.

After India's defeat, they are very much on the brink of an early elimination. Thus, Rawalpindi Express Shoaib Akhtar reacted to Men in Blue's loss and told on his Youtube channel, "I wanted India and Pakistan to play in the final, and I had already bought tickets. I wanted to interact with Indian and Pakistani crowds."

India and Pakistan won't be able to square off once again in the Asia Cup final as the former have one foot on the flight back home. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be through if they beat Afghanistan on Wednesday (September 07). For India to miraculously qualify for the summit clash, they need Pakistan to lose their remaining two games. In addition, the defending champions will have to thrash Afghanistan on Thursday evening (September 08) to keep their hopes alive.

Arshdeep Singh isn't having the best of time at the Asia Cup 2022 edition. While he has been a part of the playing XI in all four games featuring Team India, the 23-year-old had an off-day versus Hong Kong and things have only gone south for him since then.

In India's Super Four clash versus Pakistan, Arshdeep dropped a simple catch of Asif Ali -- who slammed a fine 8-ball 16 and was one of the stars in Men in Green's successful 182-run chase in Dubai. In India's face-off versus Sri Lanka on Tuesday (September 06), at the same venue, Arshdeep conceded quite a few runs in the Men in Blue's defence of 173/8 and also couldn't defend seven off the last over.

Arshdeep has shown a lot of courage to bowl the final over in India's last two outings. Nonetheless, the young pacer couldn't prevent India's back-to-back defeats as they are nearing an early exit. WATCH: SHOCKING! Spectator calls Arshdeep Singh a 'traitor' after India lose to Sri Lanka in Asia Cup tie

India lost to Sri Lanka in a must-win Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After losing to Pakistan in their opening clash in the Super Four round, Rohit Sharma & Co. were expected to bounce back over the eighth-ranked Lankans, however, Dasun Shanaka & Co. beat them by six wickets in a pulsating 174-run chase.

Opting to bowl first, Sri Lanka rode on early strikes from Dilshan Madushanka and Maheesh Theekshana before Shanaka and Chamika Karunaratne dented the run-flow in the end overs. Rohit's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (34), Rishabh Pant-Hardik Pandya (17 runs a piece) and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 not out took India to 173/8.

In reply, Kusal Mendis-Pathum Nissanka's half-centuries and Shanaka-Bhanuka Rajapaksha's finishing cameos took SL past the finish line in another last-over thriller in Dubai. With back-to-back defeats, after dominating the group stage, India have one foot on the flight back home. They, however, have a slim chance of making it to the final. Nonetheless, the Men in Blue need a lot of things to fall in their favour.

How can Team India still make it to the final

India will need help from all the other teams in the tournament to remain alive and somehow enter the final.

Sri Lanka: The defending champions will need the Islanders to beat Pakistan by a handsome margin. The Dasun Shanaka-led side are very much through to the final but can keep India alive with a big win over the Men in Green in their remaining fixture in the Super Four.

Pakistan: Babar-led Pakistan have two more games to go. If they win any of them, it will be curtains for India in the tournament. For India to remain alive, they need their arch-rivals to lose to Sri Lanka by a big margin and also succumb to the Afghans, on Wednesday (September 07), by a relatively close margin.

Afghanistan: The Mohammad Nabi-led side also have two games to play. They need to beat Pakistan at any cost for India's hopes to be alive. Later, India will hope to go past the Afghans by a big margin and somehow sneak into the final.

Ind vs SL: Rishabh Pant's reaction to Hardik Pandya's batting promotion in Asia Cup tie goes viral - WATCH

After a defeat versus Pakistan, India faced Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Four clash in the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06). Riding on Rohit Sharma's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin, they managed a competitive 173-8 but the Lankans impressed throughout the contest and defeated India by six wickets in a pulsating run-chase, with Dilshan Madushanka, Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka leading the charge. With another defeat in the Super Four, India have one foot on the flight back home.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India lost KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for cheap. While Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Rahul, Kohli looked clueless and played a very poor shot off Dilshan Madushanka to depart for a four-ball duck. The onus fell on captain Rohit and he looked in his elements. He was joined by his Mumbai Indians' (MI) teammate Suryakumar Yadav as the two stitched 97-run stand with Rohit being the aggressor, smashing some big sixes en route to an impressive 41-ball 72 (laced with 5 fours, 4 sixes). His dismissal, however, brought the Lankans back into the contest with SKY (34), Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya (falling for 17 apiece) with the bowlers using the longer dimensions of the ground to good effect.

Chamika Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka accounted for two scalps each and a combined bowling effort restricted India to 173/8. Madushanka was most impressive with a spell of 4-0-24-3. With the Lankans having completed two successive run-chases on the trot, they were favourites going into the run-chase.

In reply, SL openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka started off on a confident note. The Indian bowlers didn't resort to the change of pace as much as the Lankans and paid the price. The two openers complemented each other and found the boundaries at regular intervals as India failed to produce wicket-taking deliveries. At the halfway stage, SL were 89 for no loss. In the 12th over, Yuzvendra Chahal inflicted two wickets on the trot to bring India back into the game. R Ashwin also removed Danushka Gunathilaka but Nissanka's wicket changed the complexion of the game completely.

However, skipper Shanaka's 18-ball 33 not out and Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 17-ball 25* took the Islanders home in another last-ball thriller. Arshdeep Singh tried his best in the final over but some sloppy work on the field and few loose deliveries from time to time sealed India's fate, bringing them very close to an early elimination. They now face Afghanistan on Thursday (September 08) but will hope for the Afghan side to beat Pakistan on Wednesday (September 07) to remain alive in the contest by the barest of margins.

If Pakistan win even one of their remaining two games, India will stand eliminated irrespective of the result against Afghanistan.

Virat Kohli attended India's post-match press conference after the Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue lost to Pakistan, by five wickets, in their Super Four clash at the Asia Cup on Sunday (September 04) in Dubai. After being India's top run-getter (44-ball 60), Kohli's efforts went in vain as Babar Azam-led Pakistan won with Md Rizwan (71), Md Nawaz's 20-ball 42 and late hits from Khusdil Shah-Asif Ali taking the Men in Green past the finish line.

After the high-voltage encounter, Kohli addressed the post-match presser and made a big revelation. When asked to comment on how he dealt with all the talks regarding his form, Kohli stated that he doesn't give a lot of prominence to advice he gets on television and revealed that only MS Dhoni -- among the ex-cricketers -- texted him post his Test captaincy resignation. He meant that such gestures mean a lot more to him than receiving suggestions in front of the whole world.

Ahead of India's Asia Cup Super Four clash versus Sri Lanka, Kohli took to his Instagram handle to probably explain his comments and took a cue from an inspirational quote. He shared a text stating, "Notice the people who are happy for your happiness, and sad for your sadness. They're the ones who deserve special places in your heart.' At the presser, Kohli had said, "Let me tell you one thing: when I left Test captaincy, I got a message from only one person, with whom I had played previously; that was MS Dhoni. Many people have my number. On TV, people give lots of suggestions, people have a lot to say. But none of the people who had my number sent me a message."

"That respect [with Dhoni], that connection you have with someone, when it is genuine, it shows like this, because there is no insecurity with either of us. Neither does he [Dhoni] need anything from me, nor do I need anything from him. Neither of us suffers from insecurity. I can only say: if I want to say something to someone, I reach out to that person individually if I want to help. I mean, if you give the suggestions in front of the world, it has no value for me. If it is for my improvement, you can talk with me one-on-one, (tell me) that I genuinely want you to do well," the 33-year-old added.

In terms of rankings, India (1st) and Sri Lanka (8th) are poles apart. However, the rankings don't matter one bit at this point of the tournament. The Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders had lost their tournament-opener to Afghanistan before turning the tides emphatically with two impressive wins over Bangladesh and Afghanistan (in their Super Four opener). Thus, the momentum has shifted in Sri Lanka's favour in no time and the pressure is now on Team India. In all scenario, expect another thriller on cards when India face Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening, at the same venue where they lost to Pakistan.

Match prediction for India vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup clash: Another good surface akin for batters will be on cards in the battle of two Asian heavyweights. The captain winning the toss will aim to bowl first and can expect to chase anything over 170-175. Will India bounce back in style and go past the Sri Lankans? They face Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in their next two Super Four clashes, a must-win by all means, and will hope to beat them both to enter the summit clash. ALSO READ | Yuzvendra Chahal to be dropped? India's predicted playing XI for must-win Asia Cup clash against Sri Lanka In terms of rankings, India (1st) and Sri Lanka (8th) are poles apart. Well, they will still be favourites given their balance and overall batting prowess.

IND vs SL, Asia Cup 2022 prediction: Who will win today's Super Four clash between India and Sri Lanka?

India couldn't make it two wins in a row versus Pakistan in the ongoing Asia Cup when both sides met in the Super Four match at the Dubai International Crcket Stadium, Dubai on Sunday (September 04). After posting a competitive 181-7, being asked to bat first by Babar Azam-led Men in Green, Indian bowlers couldn't produce a memorable performance as the Men in Blue lost the contest on the penultimate ball.

Among the Indian bowlers, Arshdeep Singh returned with a decent spell (3.5-0-27-1) whereas inexperienced spinner Ravi Bishnoi was most successful, ending with 4-0-26-1. The likes of Bhuvneshwar Kumar (conceded 19 runs in the penultimate over), Hardik Pandya and Yuzvendra Chahal conceded over ten per over. Thus, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir opined on the Indian bowlers post the Pakistan defeat and lauded young Bishnoi. He also made a bold statement that Chahal -- despite being a senior bowler -- bowled the easier overs when compared to Bishnoi.

“I think Bishnoi did a fabulous job today. He was the one who bowled the toughest overs in this game. Bowling the fifth over and getting Babar out, bowling the 18th over. Had Avesh been fit, probably Bishi wouldn't have played this game. Chahal has been the senior over, and he has actually bowled the easier overs as compared to someone like Bishnoi, who is playing first game against Pakistan,” said Gambhir on Star Sports.

Gambhir further also pointed out that Hardik having an off day led to India's defeat at the hands of arch-rivals Pakistan. “You got to give it to him. I don't think India missed anyone. Probably, Hardik didn't have the day that India expected him to have, but it's fine. Cricket is a great leveller,” Gambhir added.

Ind vs Pak, Asia Cup: Yuzi Chahal bowled easier overs than Ravi Bishnoi, feels Gautam Gambhir

Arshdeep Singh was mercilessly trolled after dropping a sitter during Pakistan's riveting run-chase versus India when both sides locked horns in the Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Sunday evening (September 04) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium. Being asked to bat first, India posted a competitive 181/7 -- thanks to Virat Kohli's 44-ball 60 -- and came back into the contest after dismissing Mohammad Rizwan (71) and Mohammad Nawaz (20-ball 42) in the end overs before pacer Arshdeep's dropped catch gave a reprieve to Asif Ali. The right-hander fell to the speedster in the final over but slammed a fine 8-ball 16 and finished proceedings, with Khusdil Shah's 11-ball 14*, for the Men in Green with five wickets in hand.

After the encounter, many have come hard at the 23-year-old Arshdeep, who still returned with a fine spell (3.5-0-27-0) and pushed the game to the penultimate ball despite the dropped catch. Now, senior pacer Mohammad Shami -- who was also trolled online following his 3.5-0-43-0 spell versus Babar Azam & Co. in the 2021 T20 World Cup -- has lashed out at trolls and called them 'jobless'. Further, he has backed Arshdeep to move ahead from his setback and bounce back in style.

In an exclusive interview with Times Now, Shami didn't mince his words and said, "They only live to troll us, have no other job. When we perform well they don’t say you took a good catch but will troll us?" said Shami. "Agar dam hai toh real accounts se aaye na, fake account se toh koi bhi msg kar sakta hai (If you have the audacity, then comes from real accounts; anyone can message from fake accounts,)” he added.

The 32-year-old Shami backed Arshdeep to shine in the future and asserted further, "I’ve faced this and it doesn’t affect me because my country stands up for me. I’ll only say to Arshdeep, don’t let this hamper you because your talent is immense."

Given that Shami was also subject to massive trolling on religious lines, following India's heavy ten-wicket loss to Pakistan in last year's T20 WC face-off, he can certainly relate to Arshdeep's situation at present. The Punjab Kings' (PBKS) pacer remained calm and bowled a decent last over despite giving a reprieve to Asif Ali and will take a lot of learnings from the Pakistan clash.

After the match, former skipper Virat also extended his support to Arshdeep and said, “Anyone can commit mistakes under pressure. It was a big game, and the situation was a bit tight. I remember when I was playing my first Champions Trophy game against Pakistan, and I played a very poor shot off Shahid Afridi’s bowling. I kept looking at the ceiling till 5 in the morning. I was up all night and couldn’t sleep. I thought it would be the end of my career and never get another chance."

He added, "That’s a natural feeling. But there are senior players around you. We’ll come together again for the next game. So, it’s all about learning in a good environment and when a similar situation arrives again, you look forward to it and be ready."

'If you are brave enough...' - Shami blasts 'jobless' trolls slamming Arshdeep after Indo-Pak showdown

Rohit Sharma's India lost to Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling India-Pakistan Asia Cup clash in the Super Four clash on Sunday evening (September 04). Being asked to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's scintillating 44-ball 60 and other handy knocks from Rohit Sharma-KL Rahul along with some contributions from Rishabh Pant and Deepak Hooda to post 181-7 before Mohammad Rizwan (71) - Mohammad Nawaz (20-ball 42) and Asif Ali-Khusdil Shah's finishing cameos took Men in Green home on the penultimate ball of the contest at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

While many blamed Arshdeep Singh for dropping a sitter in the 18th over of Pakistan's run-chase, some also pointed fingers at Bhuvneshwar Kumar's 19-run penultimate over whereas others slammed the poor shot selections from India's middle-order, comprising Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya, for Rohit & Co.'s loss in the Super Four face-off. Former cricketers Gautam Gambhir and Wasim Akram also opined on the Indo-Pak battle and weren't impressed with Pant's shot selection.

"Rishabh Pant will be disappointed because that's not his shot, his shot is probably hit it over long-on or deep mid-wicket, you end up hitting over there and get out, absolutely you can take it because that's your strength. Your strength is not reverse-sweeping," Gambhir said in an interaction with Star Sports

"Especially, Gauti, at that stage of the game, there was no need to play that shot. I know he plays that shot in Test cricket, I know he is one of the top players in world cricket but in this stage of the game, that shot wasn't required," Akram mentioned during the same discussion.

Pant only managed a 12-ball 14, going for a reverse sweep off Shabad Khan's bowling before being caught by Asif.

It was down the ground and in the V. It was a beautiful pitch, hats off to the groundsmen, the ball was skidding on to the bat. That's his strength, he can smack it. No boundary is big for Rishabh Pant if he connects it, but that's his area. Absolutely, right."

'Your strength is not...' - Gambhir, Akram criticise Pant for poor shot selection in Indo-Pak contest

India and Pakistan produced another thriller in the ongoing Asia Cup when the Asian giants met in the Super Four clash, on Sunday evening (September 04), at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Being asked to bat first, Rohit Sharma & Co. made a competitive 181-7 thanks to Virat Kohli's 60-run knock but went down to Babar Azam's Men in Green by five wickets in a riveting encounter.

In pursuit of 182, Babar-led Pakistan's innings were held together by wicketkeeper-opener Mohammad Rizwan (71 off 51 balls) before Mohammad Nawaz's 20-ball 42 and Asif Ali-Khusdil Khan's cameos took their side home. In the 18th over, Pakistan needed 34 off 18 balls with Asif-Khusdil in the middle, following the dismissals of Nawaz-Rizwan. Rohit gave the ball to Ravi Bishnoi, who had removed Babar Azam, and the leg-spinner outfoxed Asif to produce a mistimed shot from his willow before pacer Arshdeep Singh, at short third, dropped a sitter. Eventually, Arshdeep removed Asif (8-ball 16) while bowling a decent last over -- with only seven to defend -- but the finisher played a key role in Pakistan's win.

India faced Hong Kong in their second game in Asia Cup 2022 edition on Wednesday (August 31) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. Beating arch-rivals Pakistan by five wickets in a thrilling contest, at the same venue, Rohit Sharma & Co. were favourites to get past minnows Hong Kong and did the same.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's calculative 44-ball 59 not out and Suryakumar Yadav's scintillating 26-ball unbeaten 68. At the start of the Indian innings, Rohit tried his best to up the ante before falling for a 13-ball 21. His partner KL Rahul failed to create an impact and scored an unimpressive 36 off 39 deliveries despite stitching a handy 56-run second-wicket stand with Virat. After his departure, SKY came and took on the Hong Kong bowlers with ease, maneuvering the field and resorting to his innovative shots. He ended with half a dozen sixes and as many fours. Out of his 6 sixes, four came in the final over.

In the 20th over, SKY went bonkers taking on Haroon Arshad all across the ground, accumulating a whopping 26 runs (6, 6, 6, 0, 6, 2). With this, the 31-year-old topped the charts with the most sixes by an Indian in a T20 Asia Cup encounter. Before him, no Indian batter had hit in excess of 3 sixes in a single T20 Asia Cup match, hence, SKY has moved past all in style.

In addition, Surya recorded the most runs by an Indian batter (26) in the final over of a T20I. Courtesy of his blitz, India posted a mammoth 192-2 and defended the target with ease -- despite the two young pacers Arshdeep Singh and Avesh Khan having an off day -- to restrict a spirited Hong Kong line-up for 152-5 in 20 overs. With the 40-run win, India join Afghanistan (who is in Group B) to qualify for the Super Four round.

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match SKY said, "Some of them (shots) are predetermined, this format is all about what you think and how you prepare before you go out to bat. At the same time, you got to be staying in the present as well. I felt the wicket was a bit slow. My plan was clear. My role was to go in and take the tempo up and just express myself, I just loved it. (Adapting to different positions) you got to be flexible, you should be equipped to bat at any number and I have opened as well. I have batted at all number. I really enjoyed it."

Rohit Sharma-led India faced Hong Kong in their Asia Cup 2022 match on Wednesday (August 31) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. After a thrilling win over Pakistan, the Men in Blue were looking to cement their spot in the Super Four round with another victory in their kitty. The Rohit Sharma-Rahul Dravid-led Indian team went past the minnows by 40 runs to become the second team, after Afghanistan, to enter the next round in the Asian championship, being held in the UAE.

Being asked to bat first, India rode on Virat Kohli's gritty 59 not out and Suryakumar Yadav's 26-ball 68* to post 192/2 in 20 overs. In reply, Hong Kong lost only five wickets but only managed 152-5 to lose by a convincing margin. With this win, Team India achieved a new feat by registering their 18th win in the format in 2022, most by the one-time winners in a calendar year. Pakistan had attained 17 wins in 2017 and, thus, India have gone past them but the overall list is still led by Babar Azam & Co. In 2021, the Men in Green had bagged 20 wins in the format (most by any team in a calendar year). However, with plenty of T20I action remaining in the year -- with the 2022 T20 World Cup to be held in Australia from October-November -- Rohit & Co. will hope to go past their arch-rivals and top the overall list.

After the win versus Hong Kong, Rohit opined at the post-match presentation, "We batted pretty well to start with, got to a very good score. Came out and bowled reasonably well, we could have done slightly better with the ball. (SKY) The kind of innings he played today, the words will be short. We have seen that with him every now and then. He comes up with such kinds of knocks. He just comes out and bats fearlessly which is what the team expects from him. Some of the shots he played today, those are not written anywhere in the book. It was very pleasing to watch. Shot selection was also crucial. We know he can play all around the park. We have also informed the group about this (flexibility in the batting order) as well. Most of the guys are ready to take the opportunity and be ready to bat wherever required. That's the flexibility we need. We'll take those chances. We are going to try and use the right match-ups."

Rohit Sharma's India register most T20I wins in a calendar year after going past Hong Kong in Asia Cup 2022

KL Rahul had a forgettable outing for Team India in their second game in the Asia Cup 2022 edition, where they locked horns with Hong Kong at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. On Wednesday evening (August 31), Rohit Sharma-led India locked horns with the minnows and rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 26-ball 68 not out and Virat Kohli's 59* to post 192-2 before restricting Hong Kong for 152-5 to win by 40 runs. While it was a fine outing for the Men in Blue, vice-captain Rahul was heavily criticised for his abysmal 39-ball 36.

Rahul, returning to international cricket during the Zimbabwe series last month, struggled to open his account and was dismissed for a golden duck versus Pakistan in defending champions India's Asia Cup opener. Versus Hong Kong, he opened with captain Rohit and fell on the last ball of the 13th over, after stitching a handy 54-run stand with Virat Kohli, before his dismissal. The right-hander hit only two fours in his innings. Thus, many slammed Rahul on social media and some former cricketers also had few words to say about his struggles.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar came to Rahul's support after the Hong Kong tie. Speaking to India Today, he said, "I think KL Rahul is a class act. With the kind of performance he has had over the years for India... if you give others a long rope, why can't we give KL Rahul a long rope? He is your vice-captain as well. You give him a long rope because we have all seen what he is capable of in the T20 format."

"He is coming back from an injury, so that rhythm is not quite there but the rhythm will come and when it comes, it will be devastating for the opposition," he added.

On the other hand, former off-spinner Pragyan Ojha said, "He brings experience. He just needs a couple of games and he will be back. He has been there and done that. I am not too concerned because others are doing well and the team is winning. This will rub off on him.

"He is just one knock away from finding his form. The shots that he played, he timed them well. He was not struggling for timing. I felt he was timing them well. So I think he's just there and it's a matter of time," he further asserted.

With another win up his sleeves as the T20I captain, Rohit has now gone past his predecessor Virat to become the second-most successful skipper in the shortest format for the Men in Blue. The list is topped by legendary captain MS Dhoni, who attained 41 wins from 72 matches. Virat ended his T20I captaincy tenure, from early 2017 to late 2021, with 30 victories from 50 games. Rohit, on the other hand, attained his 31st victory as captain in just 37 encounters after the end of proceedings between India-Hong Kong on Wednesday evening.

Rohit took over as the full-time T20I captain post Virat's exit following the disastrous run in the 2021 T20 World Cup. Since then, Rohit has led India to home series wins versus New Zealand, West Indies and away victories over England and West Indies. He will now aim to clinch the Asia Cup trophy before the action shifts to the 2022 T20 World Cup.

Rohit goes past Kohli to become India's second-most successful T20I captain, only behind legend Dhoni

Ravindra Jadeja played his part in India's thrilling win over Pakistan in the Asia Cup 2022 clash on August 28 (Sunday) at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. The star all-rounder returned with bowling figures of 2-0-11-0 and scored a crucial 29-ball 35 after being promoted at No. 4 in the Men in Blue's run-chase of 148 versus their arch-rivals.

In India's second game of the showpiece event, Jadeja didn't get a chance to bat as Rohit Sharma & Co. posted a mammoth 192/2 in 20 overs versus Hong Kong, after being asked to bat first at the same venue. However, the 33-year-old returned with an economical spell of 4-0-15-1 and inflicted a run-out as well. He dismissed Hong Kong captain Nizakhat Khan, on a free hit delivery, to derail the minnows' run-chase on Wednesday (August 31). The run-out took place on the last ball of the powerplay, with Hong Kong 51 for 1. On a back of a length delivery, Nizakhat pushed the ball towards the backward point where Jadeja was placed. Trying to steal a single, the Hong Kong skipper paid a heavy price by taking on one of the best fielders as Jadeja's rocket throw sent him back to the pavillion. Here's the video of the run-out:

India beat Hong Kong by 40 runs to book a spot in the Super Four round in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, on Wednesday (August 31). While India didn't break a lot of sweat after posting a mammoth total, Hong Kong did put up a spirited show in parts.

Hong Kong bowlers didn't allow India to dictate terms with the bat during the first half of their innings. At halfway stage, India were 70-1 and before SKY-Kohli's heroics in the death overs. When India weren't accelerating as much as they would've wanted to, a bulk of criticism came down to KL Rahul. The vice-captain, who returned to international cricket after a long gap, was struggling with his timing and didn't show much intent. Thus, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad lashed out at him on Twitter during the proceedings on Wednesday (August 31), held at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

"Is there something in the pitch that is not visible? Simply can't fathom this approach, especially from KL Rahul. #IndvsHkg" Prasad wrote on Twitter.

Simply can't fathom this approach especially from KL Rahul. #IndvsHkg — Venkatesh Prasad (@venkateshprasad) August 31, 2022 × Rahul opened the innings and fell on the last ball of the 13th over, departing for an unimpressive 39-ball 36. He managed to hit only two fours and ended with a strike rate of less than 100, i.e. 92.31. After the proceedings, Player-of-the-Match SKY addressed the post-match press conference and defended Rahul's approach. Answering a reporter's query on Rahul, Surya said, "(Smiles) Aap bol rahe ho ke KL bhai ko nahi khilana chahiye? (So you mean to say that KL should be dropped?). He (Rahul) is coming back from injury, he also needs some time. We have some time right now." Rahul will be eager to regain his rhythm as the tournament progresses ahead in the UAE. India are set to face the winner of Pakistan-Hong Kong in their first clash in the Super Four round, on Sunday (September 04) at the same venue in Dubai.

Hardik Pandya has become the man of the season. Hardik returned to competitive cricket in IPL 2022, after the 2021 T20 World Cup, and ended with 487 runs along with eight wickets and led the debutants Gujarat Titans (GT) to their maiden IPL title.

Since then, there has been no looking back for the 28-year-old star all-rounder. Hardik has won games for India at regular intervals -- in the home South Africa T20Is, during the away series versus England and West Indies -- and was also the star performer for Rohit Sharma & Co. during their Asia Cup opener, versus Pakistan at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai on Sunday (August 28).

While Hardik is performing in all departments, he is looking fit and also growing as a leader. The star cricketer's calm and composed nature is being hailed all across the cricketing fraternity. His confident nod to non-striker Dinesh Karthik just before hitting the winning shot versus Pakistan went viral, with many lauding his calmness and comparing it with MS Dhoni.

Recently, Hardik's GT coach and former Indian pacer Ashish Nehra opined on his success and told in an interaction with ICC, "Yes, even I've observed it. And it is necessary. With time and experience, you learn things both as a human being and as a player. Pandya is no different. You might have seen him talking about it. He has said that he has learned different things from different experiences. Now he is married, father of a kid, and matured. With Agastya's arrival, he has become more calm and is more focused on his work," he added.

Hardik's form is a huge asset for India going ahead into the 2022 T20 World Cup. For now, he will be eager to guide India to the Asia Cup championship before the action moves to the ICC event, to be held from October-November in Australia.

Virat Kohli returned to international cricket after a long time during India's Asia Cup 2022 opener versus Pakistan, at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, on Sunday (August 28). The 33-year-old's form has been talked about a lot in the last few months. The right-hander's last international century came in late 2019 whereas he had an ordinary IPL 2022 followed by a dismal tour of England, where he ended without a half-century across formats.

Against Pakistan, Kohli came out to bat after KL Rahul got out for a golden duck in India's pursuit of 148. He stitched a handy 49-run second-wicket stand with skipper Rohit Sharma. Eventually, the former Indian captain fell for a 34-ball 35 but showed promise of returning to form with some impressive shots.

India's 1983 World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev opined on Kohli and lauded him for his attitude for sticking out in the middle versus Pakistan during a tricky phase of the run-chase. In addition, he mentioned his attitude as the biggest factor which makes him a bigger player than anyone else in the last ten years.

"Good to see him come back. I saw a couple of shots where he really made an impact. I just want him to be more sure about that. So far, he is coming back, he looked good. He was lucky in the first over when he was dropped. I like his attitude not only today, but from the last ten years. This makes him a bigger player than anyone else," Kapil told ANI.

On Kohli's form, Kapil asserted, "It is much bigger than anything else. No player will get runs in every match, no player will get a zero in every match. I think with his ability, his talent, it should not take him that long to come back in form. Just waiting for one big knock, he will be back, I have no doubt about it."
