From Virat Kohli to Rohit Sharma: Superstar batters who could be playing their last T20 World Cup

After a long wait, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have named Mohammed Shami as the replacement for injured Jasprit Bumrah in India's T20 World Cup squad. Ever since it became official that Bumrah won't be part of the T20 WC, speculations were rife regarding who will replace him. At first, the contenders were Md Shami and Deepak Chahar. However, with Chahar also bowing out due to back issues, Shami has now become Bumrah's replacement.

Meanwhile, the likes of pacer Mohammed Siraj and all-rounder Shardul Thakur have been added to the reserves. The duo were part of the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian ODI team, who beat South Africa 2-1 at home. During the three-match series, Siraj picked up five wickets at an economy of 4.52 and returned as the Player-of-the-Series. Shardul also contributed with three scalps and scored a vital 31-ball 33 during the series opener.

T20 WC: BCCI names Mohammed Shami as Jasprit Bumrah's replacement, Siraj-Shardul added in reserves

After a 13-run win in their first warm-up encounter versus Western Australia XI, India locked horns with them once again on Thursday (October 13). With Rohit Sharma playing as a specialist batter, KL Rahul got a chance to lead the side. Opting to bowl first, India fell behind courtesy of fifties from D Arcy Short and Nick Hobson as the WA XI posted a competitive 168 for 8 in 20 overs. In reply, India only managed 132 for 8 to lose by 36 runs.

India got rid of Josh Philippe for cheap after opting to bowl first. Arshdeep Singh accounted for his wicket before a 110-run second-wicket stand between Short and Hobson tilted the momentum in their favour. From thereon, wickets fell at regular intervals as R Ashwin (3 for 32) and Harshal Patel (2 for 27) curtailed the run-flow. Nonetheless, WA XI still managed to post a healthy total on the board, which proved enough.

During the run-chase, Rahul led the charge and held one end with a 55-ball 74 but didn't get much support from the other batters as Hardik Pandya (17) and Dinesh Karthik (14-ball 10) were the only contributors. Matthew Kelly and Lance Morris accounted for two wickets apiece and derailed India's run-flow. Eventually, India only managed 132 for 8 to lose by a convincing margin. Rohit didn't come out to bat and, hence, hurt the Men in Blue's chances during their run-chase.

After the loss, India will now have some rest before turning up for their remaining two warm-up encounters, where they will face Australia (October 17) and New Zealand (October 19) before their T20 World Cup opening clash. In India's T20 WC 2022 opener, the Rohit Sharma-led side will face Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic MCG, Melbourne.

So far, in the two warm-up encounters, all apart from Virat Kohli have got a chance to play. It will be interesting to see if the former Indian captain will be rested for their remaining two warm-up ties or get a look-in.

Western Australia XI beat KL Rahul-starrer India by 36 runs in second warm-up encounter

Team India dealt with a huge blow, early this month, with Jasprit Bumrah being officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to a back stress fracture. Bumrah was out of the Asia Cup due to back issues as well. While Mohammed Shami or Deepak Chahar were being considered as strong contenders to replace Bumrah at the forthcoming mega event, Chahar has also suffered a back injury, ruling him out of the showpiece event in Australia, which gets underway on October 16.

With Bumrah and Chahar both ruled out, BCCI is sending Md Shami, Mohammed Siraj and fast-bowling all-rounder Shardul Thakur to Australia, where one of the trio will join the main squad as Bumrah's replacement. Ahead of India's tournament opener, former India head coach Ravi Shastri raised concerns about India's pace battery breaking down regularly.

"It was the most frustrating thing for me as (India coach), when you lose key players to injuries. We toured England and New Zealand twice. On all those tours, Bhuvneshwar Kumar was injured, where he'd have got a bagful of wickets with his skills. Now, you see Chahar has hardly played, and he's injured. I was looking at the stats, Bumrah has played 5 matches since the last T20 World Cup and he's injured. So, you've got to look at it very seriously, as to why it is happening," Shastri told senior journalist Ayaz Memon at a 'Meet-the-media programme' at Mumbai Press Club on Wednesday (October 12).

After Bumrah, Chahar's injury also comes as a huge blow to Rohit Sharma & Co. Given he can also bat lower down the order, his absence will also hurt India's chances. "Deepak will take some time to get fit. His back issue has flared up again. His ankle is fine and there wasn't any problem there. So BCCI is sending three reinforcements, Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur," a BCCI official had told PTI on conditions of anonymity after the pacer's injury news came out.

Ravi Shastri raises concerns on Indian pace battery's regular injury woes ahead of T20 World Cup

Shikhar Dhawan-led India demolished South Africa in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday evening (October 11). After levelling the series with an impressive seven-wicket win in the second and penultimate ODI, Dhawan & Co. locked horns with the Proteas with all to play for both the sides.

Opting to bowl first, India bundled out the David Miller-led SA for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs, their fourth-lowest ODI score (lowest versus the Men in Blue). After Md Siraj-Washington Sundar's early strikes, and an economical spell from Avesh Khan, Kuldeep Yadav joined in and wreaked havoc by returning with match figures of 4.1-0-18-4. The wily spinner, who also accounted for 22 wickets in IPL 2022 (fifth overall), has had a good run in 2022. After his superlative performance versus South Africa in the ODI series decider, questions were raised as to why the 27-year-old isn't part of the Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup squad.

Nonetheless, Kuldeep isn't disappointed. In the post-match press conference, he said, "I am not disappointed about missing out on the World Cup because I am more focussed on the process. I am seeing how I can improve match by match. I am not disappointed as the ones who were selected are among the best."

Kuldeep-starrer India beat SA by seven wickets by chasing down a paltry 100-run target in 19.1 overs. Shubhman Gill led the charge with the bat, with an impressive 57-ball 49, before Shreyas Iyer's 28 not out propelled the Men in Blue to a 2-1 series win.

'I am not disappointed' - Kuldeep Yadav reacts after not being part of India's T20 World Cup squad

India dealt with a huge blow when Jasprit Bumrah was officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup, early this month. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) have not officially named his replacement but Mohammed Shami, Mohammed Siraj and Shardul Thakur are set to travel to Australia to join the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team Down Under, prior to the main draw of the mega event.

Nonetheless, former Aussie speedster Brett Lee has backed Umran Malik and feels he should have been part of India's T20 WC squad. "Umran Malik is bowling at 150 km per hour. I mean when you have the best car in the world, and you leave it in the garage, then what's the point of having that car? Umran Malik should have been picked in the Indian squad for the World Cup," Lee told Khaleej Times.

"Yes, he is young, yes, he is raw, but he bowls at 150 kmph, so get him in the team, get him to Australia where the ball flies through. It's different when you have a guy bowling at 140 kmph and a guy who is bowling at 150 kmph," the ex-speedster added.

In three T20Is he has played so far, the the 22-year-old accounted for two scalps at an economy rate of 12.44.

It looks like the Indian team management isn't looking at Umran at the moment and the young pacer will have to remain consistent and needs to work on his line and lengths, without compromising on pace, to cement his place across formats.

Suryakumar Yadav has had a stellar run in 2022. Being India's highest ranked batter in T20Is, the right-hander's form will be vital to India's chances at the 2022 T20 World Cup. The No. 4 batter has so far amassed 801 runs with six half-centuries and a ton at an average of 40.05 and a strike rate of 184.56.

Ahead of the T20 World Cup, which is set to get underway on October 16, former South Africa pacer Dale Steyn lauded Surya and feels he can be 'India's version of AB de Villiers'. Further, he pinned hopes on him to go big at the upcoming showpiece event Down Under.

“He's the kind of player that likes to use the pace of the ball. He likes to get in behind the square. In places like Perth, Melbourne, all of these grounds, there is a little bit of extra pace on it. So, you can use the pace, you can hit on fine leg, behind and all along the carpet. And he's also really good when standing still and getting off the back foot. He has played some amazing back foot cover drives and some beautiful cover drives off the front foot too," Steyn said on Star Sports show 'Cricket Live'.

The South African further asserted, "So, he's an all-round player, and it's in Australia, where the wickets are so good, they are batter friendly. You can also get away when a bowler tries to bowl full, you can place the ball left and you can use the pace of the ball really well, given some room. T20 World Cup 2022, India's warm-up schedule: Squad, venues, timings, telecast - All you need to know

When the T20 World Cup commenced for the first time in 2007, not many had high hopes from the tournament. After the resounding success of the inaugural edition, held in South Africa, the shortest format has received humongous success all across the globe, helping in IPL's magnanimous rise over the years, and leading to the birth of many T20 leagues worldwide.

The shortest format has led to the game's expansion and helped it reach various untapped territories. The format is such that the margin of error is very small and, thus, it becomes very tough for any side, irrespective of their ranking or overall stature, to dominate in the T20 WC. As a result, none of the teams have managed to defend their title whereas teams such as New Zealand and South Africa are yet to win their maiden title. Ahead of the eighth edition of the T20 WC, which will kick off on October 16 in Australia, here's a list of winners in the tournament history:

While defending the T20 WC title isn't easy by any means, Aussie captain Aaron Finch has promised the national side's fans that his team will give their all in the forthcoming edition. "The ICC T20 Men’s World Cup is going to be a great spectacle and a huge honour for us to defend the trophy in front of our home fans. There are so many great sides with the very best players in the world coming to Australia. It’s an amazing opportunity for Australian fans to see the world’s best.,” Finch stated in an official release. "We’ve felt the power of home crowd support at the 2015 One-Day Cricket World Cup and the Women’s ICC T20 World Cup last year. It will be great to have the whole country behind us and make it another World Cup to remember. We will surely try our best," he added.

Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan are placed in Pool A. On the other hand, Pool B comprises India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa whereas four more teams will join the main draw of the event, two in each group, after the conclusion of the qualifying round.

From MS Dhoni's Team India to Australia: List of winners in ICC Men's T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma-led India arrived in Australia early this month, for the forthcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition. India will start their campaign versus Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic MCG, Melbourne. Before that, the Indian team is trying to get accustomed to the conditions and pitches in Australia. Thus, they are playing two practice T20Is versus Western Australia XI at The WACA, Perth before playing two warm-up encounters, versus Australia and New Zealand respectively.

In the first practice T20I versus the Western Australia XI, Rohit & Co. opted to bat first and posted 158 for 6, riding on Suryakumar Yadav's 52 and vital contributions from Deepak Hooda and Hardik Pandya. In reply, the opposition managed 145 for 8 courtesy of Arshdeep Singh's 3 for 6 and contributions from Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Harshal Patel. The clash didn't see the likes of R Ashwin, KL Rahul and Virat Kohli. The trio are expected to feature in the second and final practice T20I, before the action moves to the warm-up games.

After the match, Ashwin interacted with the reporters. The wily off-spinner was asked about Kohli and whether he will appear in the second practice game at Perth. To this, the senior spinner gave a witty reply. "I wish I could walk into Rahul Dravid's shoes one day and answer that question, but as of now, your guess is as good as mine," Ashwin told reporters after the match.

India are placed in Pool B, along with Pakistan, Bangladesh, South Africa whereas two more teams will join from the qualifiers. Given that Men in Blue faltered in last year's edition, bowing out in the Super 12 round, Rohit & Co. will be eager to go the distance this time around and clinch their second title, after 2007.

'Wish I could walk into Dravid's shoes': Ashwin on chances of Kohli missing both warm-up games in Perth

India and South Africa have locked horns in the third and final ODI, at the Arun Jaitley Stadium, New Delhi, on Tuesday (October 11). After Shikhar Dhawan-led India's impressive seven-wicket series-levelling win in the second and penultimate encounter at Ranchi, on Sunday (October 09), both sides entered the series decider with all to play for. In the absence of regular skipper Temba Bavuma and vice-captain Keshav Maharaj, David Miller got the opportunity to captain the side for the first time in ODIs. However, the power-hitter's debut as ODI captain got off to a poor start as the Proteas bundled out for a paltry 99 in 27.1 overs.

Opting to bowl first, India rode on impressive opening spells from Md Siraj and Avesh Khan. While Siraj accounted for the wickets of Janneman Malan and Reeza Hendricks, Washington Sundar removed Quinton de Kock and captain Miller. Kuldeep Yadav then wreaked havoc by dismissing the lower order in a flash, returning with match figures of 4 for 18 in 4.1 overs. As a result, SA folded for their fourth-lowest ODI score. In addition, this is their lowest total against the Men in Blue.

In the mid-innings break, Kuldeep told the broadcasters, "Feeling happy to take four wickets, have taken four wickets after such a long time. I was trying something different before IPL, and I am enjoying my bowling since then. I missed the hat-trick, could have bowled quicker. Should have changed the angle. I think Washington bowled really well. The wicket was gripping, I tried to bowl seam-up deliveries, tried to mix it up with the pace, tried to set up the batters. I was working on my rhythm, I was a bit slower before my injury. I am not compromising with spin, just trying to work on my rhythm."

India are well on course for a terrific series win, amid the absence of many of their regular players. On the other hand, SA will blame their batters for not standing tall in the series finale as the Proteas are now set to feature in the 2023 ODI World Cup Qualifiers, in Zimbabwe, after already struggling in the bottom half of the World Super League points table.

Aakash Chopra remains one of the most followed and active cricketers on Twitter. Chopra, who represented India in 10 Tests, has always been vocal on various aspects of the gentlemen's game and keeps sharing his opinions on several cricketing topics. Chopra, who also represented the then Sourav Ganguly-led Kolkata Knight Riders in IPL 2008, wasn't very successful at the highest level. 'Going by your logic...': Former Indian opener hits back at troll who termed him a 'failed cricketer'

Shikhar Dhawan-led India beat South Africa by seven wickets in the second and penultimate ODI at the JSCA International Stadium Complex, Ranchi on Sunday evening (October 09). After losing the series opener by nine runs, India have now levelled the series with one game to go at the national capital, i.e. New Delhi on Tuesday evening (October 11).

With a host of regular players in Australia for the T20 World Cup, from October 16, Dhawan & Co. came from behind to restrict SA for 278 for 7 in 50 overs, after Keshav Maharaj-led Proteas were well-placed at 215 for 4 in 38 overs. Post half centuries from Aiden Markram and Reeza Hendricks, Md Siraj's 3 for 38 restricted the visitors who chose to bat first despite dew set to make its presence felt in the second-half.

In reply, India were 48-2 but a solid 161-run third-wicket stand between centurion Shreyas Iyer (113 not out off 111 balls) and Ishan Kisha's 93 took the Men in Blue past the finish line. Iyer stayed till the end, with Sanju Samson unbeaten on 30, to take the home side to an easy win eventually. The right-hander has been in terrific form in ODIs in 2022, with four half-centuries and a ton (his second in the format). With his well-compiled knock helping India, Iyer joined Virat Kohli in a unique list.

Iyer joins Kohli & Co.

Iyer became only the second Indian batter after Kohli to score an ODI ton at Ranchi. The former Indian captain has two centuries, both in ODIs, at the venue (one against Australia in 2019 and the other versus Sri Lanka in late 2014). At the post-match presentation, Iyer said, "When I went into bat, felt that the wicket was playing good. The talk between me and Ishan was to play the ball on merit, build a partnership. Tomorrow is going to be a travel day, and then the match. Let's see what is in store for me (regarding his fitness for next game). I'm not someone who changes according to the bowler. I am someone who changes on instinct and believing in myself."

Meanwhile, Dhawan thanked his counterpart Maharaj to have opted to bat first and said, "Worked perfectly well for us, thanks to Keshav that he chose to bat (smiles). Glad that dew came in at the right time. Ishan and Shreyas batted so well, that partnership was so nice to watch. It was coming on nicely, but it stayed low. Plan was to take on the bowlers in the first 10 overs as we knew it could get difficult in the middle overs. When the dew came, you could see that it got easier. Very satisfied with the bowling unit, they are all young and these are good learnings for them. Especially Shahbaz. All the young boys, I'm so proud that they showed so much maturity."

Overall, Iyer became the fourth batter as the list also includes Sri Lanka's Angelo Mathews and Australian opener Usman Khawaja who have scored hundreds at the venue. Ind vs SA, 2nd ODI: Shreyas Iyer joins Virat Kohli in unique list after 113 not out in Ranchi

Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup-bound players left for Australia last week. After finishing their three-match T20I series versus South Africa, which they won 2-1, Rohit & Co. left for the marquee tournament with the Shikhar Dhawan-led Indian ODI locking horns with the Proteas in the 50-over series at home.

Losing the first ODI by nine runs, in pursuit of 250 in a 40-over contest, India had to win the second and penultimate encounter to keep the series alive. With many of their regulars in Australia for the T20 WC preparations, the talk was that Dhawan-led India's side is a second-stringed side or a B-team, hence, will find it difficult to level the series.

After India rode on Shreyas Iyer's 113 not out, Ishan Kishan's 93 and Md Siraj's 3 for 38 to win the second ODI by seven wickets, Kishan revealed what motivated India ahead of the Ranchi face-off on Sunday (October 9). Speaking at the post-match press conference, the swashbuckling left-hander said, "I heard people talking that we are the B-side, we are not so much capable of beating South Africa's full strength side. I heard these comments and we're really upset about it, so we wanted to play our A-game today."

'Heard we are the B-side' - Ishan Kishan on what inspired Shikhar Dhawan's India ahead of 2nd ODI vs SA

While Rohit Sharma-led India's T20 World Cup team left for Australia, Shikhar Dhawan's second-string ODI side faced South Africa in the three-match ODI series opener on Thursday (October 7) in Lucknow. In a rain-curtailed ODI, Temba Bavuma's SA were asked to bat first. Quinton de Kock managed a promising 54-ball 48 but the Proteas were reduced to 110/4 before unbeaten fifties from Heinrich Klaasen and David Miller saw them post a competitive 249/4 in the 40-over contest.

In reply, India were on the back foot and reduced to 51-4 before a 37-ball 50 from Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson's unbeaten 86 took India close to the total, managing 240 for 8, losing by nine runs. After the clash, former South African speedster Dale Steyn admitted being nervous when Kagiso Rabada bowled a no-ball on the final ball of the penultimate over as he was aware of Samson's exploits.

"As soon as KG (Kagiso Rabada) bowled that no-ball in the last ball of his over, I was like, 'please don't let this happen'. Because you never know with someone like Sanju, especially with the form that he has got and the belief that he has. I watched him in the IPL, his ability to take down the bowlers and hit boundaries at will, especially in the last two overs of the game, is incredible," Steyn said in the post-match discussion on Star Sports.

"Shamsi was going to bowl the last over and he (Samson) knew he (Shamsi) had a rough day. I was nervous when KG (Rabada) bowled the no ball. Because Sanju is the kind of guy who has the potential of Yuvi (Yuvraj Singh), to hit those six sixes and get the team across the line when it needs 30+," Styen said.

Eventually, India needed a mammoth 30 runs off the last six deliveries of the match after Rabada conceded only seven runs in the 39th over. Samson went big, taking on Tabraiz Shamsi who ended with match figures of 8-0-89-1, and smacked 6,4,4,4 but Dhawan & Co. fell short by nine runs.

At the post-match presentation, Dhawan said, "Quite proud of the way the boys played the game, we didn't get a good start, the way Shreyas, Samson and Shardul batted was excellent. We gave away too many runs on a wicket that swung and spun, the fielding wasn't great, but this was a good learning experience for us."

Rohit Sharma-led India recently left for Australia, after their three T20Is versus South Africa at home, for the upcoming T20 World Cup, starting on October 16. Rohit & Co. will hope to win the title for the first time since the inaugural edition in 2007.

In last year's T20 WC, Virat Kohli-led India bowed out of the mega event in the Super 12 round after defeats at the hands of Pakistan and New Zealand, respectively. Since then, Rohit-Rahul Dravid-led team management were committed to strengthen their back-up options.

As a result, India made a plethora of changes throughout the year while playing the shortest format, especially in the bowling attack. It was done to provide the national selectors with a large pool of players to choose from.

However, former Pakistan captain Rashid Latif took a dig at Team India's constant rotation of players. While speaking on a TV show, Latif was asked if Deepak Hooda's should have been given more chances during India's experimental phase (the all-rounder is part of the T20 WC squad but wasn't preferred on several occasions before missing the last two T20I series due to injury). This, the former keeper-batter made a bold claim.

'India played 56-57 players...' - Ex-Pakistan captain takes a dig at Rohit & Co. before T20 World Cup

Pakistan Cricket Board's (PCB) chief Ramiz Raja has lashed out at Babar Azam's critics. Pakistan lost the Asia Cup final, losing to eventual winners Sri Lanka by 23 runs, whereas they conceded the seven-match T20I series, at home, to England 4-3. Meanwhile, Babar Azam -- who held the No. 1 spot in ICC T20I Rankings for long -- was woefully out of form in the Asia Cup, where he amassed only 68 runs in six outings, but returned to form with 285 runs in the England series (second-most overall). However, he is often slammed for his strike rate while batting at the top.

Ramiz, hence, made a bold Virat Kohli statement while slamming Babar's critics. "Previously we used to falter at the very first hurdle. Yes we reached the final and yes we did not play well. But it's okay to have a bad day. But there were others teams as well in the Asia Cup. I mean then India should then have been severely criticised for not reaching the final. But that is not what their fans and media do. I'll tell you...when Virat Kohli scored a century against Afghanistan, they forgot their entire Asia Cup. Will we ever do that? What we say is that Babar Azam scored a ton, but his strike rate was 135 while David Warner's was 147.3. So this is useless,” the former captain said while speaking to Samaa TV during an interview.

'When Kohli scored 100, India forgot their Asia Cup campaign...': Ramiz Raja on Babar Azam's critics

On Monday (October 03), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that Jasprit Bumrah is officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia. Bumrah will miss the forthcoming showpiece event Down Under due to a back stress fracture. The 28-year-old had earlier also missed the Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, due to back issues.

It goes without saying that Bumrah's absence will be a huge void to fill for Rohit Sharma-led India, who departed for Australia recently. The premier pacer has been India's go-to-bowler across formats but missed quite a few international games in the ongoing calendar year, due to injuries or being rested at regular intervals. Apart from being rested, the fact that Bumrah featured in all 14 games for Mumbai Indians (MI) in IPL 2022 hasn't been well received by some of the Indian cricket fans. Some section of fans have now accused him of prioritising franchise cricket over national duty after being ruled out of the T20 WC.

The right-arm pacer Bumrah now took to Instagram, on Wednesday (October 05), to share a story where he shared a picture of Winston Churchill’s quote that read: "You will never reach your destination if you stop and throw stones at every dog that barks."

After Bumrah's omission, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra has urged the BCCI selection committee to relook their strategy and add two pacers in his place. In a series of tweets, Chopra said, "Boom( Bumrah) was India’s attacking option that might have allowed for having more defensive options in the squad. Now that he isn’t there, I would be surprised if the selectors/team-management didn’t have a serious rethink about their strategy…Bumrah missed the tour to WI and Asia Cup…and if Shami was indeed the best option to replace Bumrah (in case, he didn’t make it) then he should have been a part of the Asia Cup at the very least. India went with only 3 fast bowlers. And paid for it."

Jasprit Bumrah reacts amid accusations of prioritising franchise cricket over national duty

India will be without Jasprit Bumrah in the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Australia, which kicks off on October 16 with the qualifying round. Rohit Sharma & Co. lost the services of Bumrah for the marquee tournament due to a back stress fracture.

It is to be noted that the 28-year-old Bumrah's back issues had kept him out of action for the Asia Cup 2022 edition as well. With the senior pacer out of action, the BCCI selection committee will have to name his replacement at the earliest, with Mohammed Shami and Deepak Chahar being the top-two contenders at the moment.

Amid all this, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Aakash Chopra took to his official Twitter account and suggested the selectors to 'rethink about their strategy' and add two pacers following Bumrah's ouster.

"Boom( Bumrah) was India’s attacking option that might have allowed for having more defensive options in the squad. Now that he isn’t there, I would be surprised if the selectors/team-management didn’t have a serious rethink about their strategy…," wrote Chopra

"Bumrah missed the tour to WI and Asia Cup…and if Shami was indeed the best option to replace Bumrah (in case, he didn’t make it) then he should have been a part of the Asia Cup at the very least. India went with only 3 fast bowlers. And paid for it," he further opined.

Aakash Chopra urges BCCI selectors to rethink their strategy with no Jasprit Bumrah for T20 World Cup

On Monday evening (October 03), the BCCI announced that Jasprit Bumrah is officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to back stress fracture. Bumrah's injury woes started before the Asia Cup. The speedster missed the continental tournament, held in the UAE, and returned during the home T20Is versus Australia -- where he played two out of the three games.

After missing the three-match T20I series opener versus South Africa, which concluded on Tuesday (October 05), Bumrah was monited by the BCCI medical team before a final call was taken on his T20 WC chances. With him out of the scene for the forthcoming mega event, Rohit Sharma-led India have a herculean task to fill in for Bumrah and go all the distance in the upcoming edition in Australia.

Former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja, speaking on the Cricbuzz show, cited Waqar Younis' example and explained how India can still win the T20 WC title sans Bumrah. The 51-year-old pointed out that the Indian team should not have a problem without the pacer, as no role was assigned to him.

"You know, this is a really tough one to answer. But to make it simple and for fans, just to give them hope. One is that we didn't play with Jasprit Bumrah throughout this year. We played very few games with Jasprit Bumrah and India still managed to do well," Jadeja said.

Jadeja further opined, "So there is no role play that got assigned to him. So, luckily, from that point of view, you know the Indian team should not have that problem. You cannot replace Jasprit Bumrah, not even close, because he is so unique that you will miss him."

"Two, just to give you an assurance that you know people who are young and who've joined us, I'll give them a story from 30 years ago. There was another World Cup in Australia in 1992. The team that won that World Cup, not many people in India would like this. The team that won that World Cup had a similar thing happen to them. A man called Waqar Younis, in that period of time, was the finest bowler in that format or any format, and just like Jasprit Bumrah, he was that attacking a bowler. He missed out on that World Cup just before with a back injury, pretty similar to Jasprit Bumrah's, but at the end of the day, Pakistan happened to win that World Cup," he added.

Rishabh Pant has made limited appearances for Team India in the shortest format. While he has grown in stature in Tests and scored his maiden ODI ton during the England tour in June-July, the left-hander hasn't been able to have much success in T20Is.

During the Australia home T20Is, Pant featured in the playing XI only in the second and penultimate match. In the just-concluded South Africa series, the 25-year-old got a chance as India rested Hardik Pandya. After not getting an opportunity to bat in the first two T20Is versus the Proteas, Pant opened the innings for India during the final encounter in Indore on Tuesday evening (October 4). In India's pursuit of 228, the left-hander departed for a 14-ball 27 and failed to make a big score.

After another missed opportunity by Pant, former Indian cricketer Ajay Jadeja revealed the reason behind the youngster's T20I struggles. He said during a discussion on Cricbuzz, "Because the Indian team has moved on to role-playing acts, and he’s not fitted into any role, that’s where he has lost out. DK played a fabulous knock. With that role-play that he is doing, it works. If he wasn’t in that role-play business and was batting at No. 4 like in the early part of his career, then, 46 on this surface, how can you throw it away?"

"He’s got a mate in DK to learn from. He can ask him, ‘Listen, what do I need to do? Is there something I am missing out on? You’ve gone through this. Show me the way.’ No matter how big a fan I am, how long will you persist with him? There is no dearth of talent, and it is just this format. So, it is something that he has to figure out," Jadeja pointed out.

'He’s not fitted into any role' - Ajay Jadeja's take on Rishabh Pant's underwhelming T20I returns

The T20 World Cup 2022 edition is just a few days away. The eighth edition of the mega event will be held in Australia and will kick off with the qualifying round. Four teams, from the qualifiers, will then join the top eight sides in the Super 12 round (in two groups of six each).

Before the commencement of the showpiece event, former cricketers and experts of the game are picking their favourites for the coveted title. Rohit Sharma-led India, who are the No. 1 ranked side in the format, Australia, South Africa, Pakistan and England are some serious contenders whereas other teams can also not be taken lightly as the margin of error is very small in the shorest format.

Ahead of the T20 WC, Aussie great Michael Bevan picked his favourites. "I reckon I would have to say India, England and Australia. I think that the pick of the teams at the moment are probably India and England. But Australia have some amazing players, some super talented players and, when it clicks for them, it clicks and they are plenty good enough to take off (win) consecutive World Cups," Bevan told SkySports.

"And, given the home ground advantage (for Australia), it should help a little bit as well. I think they would have to be my top three at this stage," the two-time ODI World Cup winner added.

In last year's edition, Aaron Finch-led Australia won the title for the first time after beating New Zealand by eight wickets at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. It will be interesting to see which side walks away with the championship this time around.

India, Australia, England or Pakistan? Aussie great picks his favourites for T20 World Cup

India faced South Africa in the third and inconsequential T20I, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, on Tuesday evening (October 04). After taking an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series, with a 16-run win in the second and penultimate encounter, Rohit Sharma-led India asked South Africa to bat first.

Temba Bavuma's SA rode on Rilee Rossouw's 100 not out to post 227-3. In reply, India only managed 178 in 18.3 overs to lose by 49 runs and win the series 2-1. Post the encounter, head coach Rahul Dravid addressed the media and was asked by a reporter why Axar Patel -- who was the Player-of-the-Series in the Australia home T20Is -- bowled only a single over in the Indore face-off. To this, Dravid maintained his calm but gave a blunt reply.

"Match-ups are important, there are important to us. Whether they are more important or not, it's for you guys to dig deep and look at what stats tell you about some match-ups, about numbers of left-hand batsmen against left-arm spin. Maybe, you find them answers in that.

India refrained from bowling Axar in the middle and took him out of the attack during the Rossouw-Quinton De Kock 90-run second-wicket stand. With two left-handers batting in the middle, on a ground whose boundaries range between 55-65 metres, it would've been suicidal for Axar to be bowling at that moment. On a small ground, with in-form David Miller, still to come out to bat, Axar didn't return to the bowling attack and ended with match figures of 1-0-13-0.

In a bid to inflict a series whitewash over Temba Bavuma & Co., Rohit-led India opted to bowl first after resting KL Rahul and Virat Kohli whereas Arshdeep Singh missed out due to back issues. Riding on Rilee Rossouw's 48-ball 100*, Quinton de Kock's 68 and David Miller's 5-ball unbeaten 19, SA posted a mammoth 227/3. In reply, India were 45 for 3 and only managed 178 all-out in 18.3 overs, to lose by 49 runs.

With this being India's last match before the T20 World Cup, where they begin their campaign versus Pakistan on October 23 at the MCG, Melbourne, cricketer-turned-commentator Murali Karthik interacted with skipper Rohit. Rohit then turned serious and stated, "No, honestly speaking, we have to look at our bowling. What more options could we find in the powerplay, in the middle-overs, and in the death as well."

The ex-spinner then said, "I thought it would be the least of your concerns!" What more options could we find in the powerplay, in the middle-overs, and in the death as well." "The last two series were very challenging. We were playing against the top-2 sides. We had to come up against tough challenges. We will go back and see what better we can do. It is going to be challenging, but we need to find an answer to those. I would still say, we are working towards that. Guys need clarity on what we want to achieve, and it is my job to convey that. It's a work in progress, and we want to continue to keep doing that," the 35-year-old added. India will now travel to Perth and play some practice as well as warm-up games in the run-up to the T20 WC, which kicks off on October 16.

The likes of Dinesh Karthik (46 off 21), Rishabh Pant (27 off 14) got starts but couldn`t convert them into big innings.

3rd T20I: Rilee Rossouw's maiden ton propels South Africa to 49-run win over India, hosts win 2-1

On Monday evening (October 03), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced that premier pacer Jasprit Bumrah is set to miss the forthcoming T20 World Cup in Australia, which gets underway on October 16. Bumrah's injury woes were highlighted on September 30, giving sleepless nights to Indian cricket fans worldwide. After the official announcement came, it is likely that senior pacer Mohammed Shami or Deepak Chahar will replace him. The two speedsters were named in the reserves by the BCCI selection committee when the squad was announced early in September.

"The BCCI Medical team has ruled out Team India fast bowler Jasprit Bumrah from the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup squad. The decision was taken following a detailed assessment and in consultation with the specialists," BCCI said in a statement, confirming Bumrah's ouster from the showpiece event Down Under. Bumrah's absence is a huge dent to Rohit Sharma-led India's chances of winning their second T20 WC, after the 2007 edition.

Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Sunil Gavaskar has now reacted to Bumrah's absence. "Jasprit Bumrah's absence from the Indian team for the World Cup will hurt India considerably. There's no other player in the Indian team, with due respect to every other player, whose absence means so much than Bumrah," Gavaskar wrote in a column for Mid-Day.

"We saw in the two games that he played how effective he was and how his presence in the team galvanised the other bowlers. Whether he made the comeback too soon, is now something in the nature of conjecture, but the fact remains that his absence is a huge blow for India’s prospects in the T20 World Cup. The way Deepak Chahar and young Arshdeep Singh exploited the conditions in Thiruvananthapuram does give hope that, with a bit of luck, they can fill in a fair bit of the hole left by Bumrah's absence," the Little Master further added.

India will now expect their pacers -- such as Bhuvneshwar Kumar, Harshal Patel and Arshdeep Singh -- to rise up to the occasion in Bumrah's absence and hope for Shami or Chahar to make a big mark in the upcoming ICC event in Australia. In the last year's edition, Virat Kohli-led India failed to impress and bowed out in the Super 12 round. In their dismal run, Bumrah returned as their most-successful bowler, with seven scalps at an economy of 5.08.

Bumrah will be out of action for sometime due to a back stress fracture. On Tuesday evening (October 03), India were dealt with another blow as speedster Arshdeep Singh also skipped the third and final T20I versus South Africa, at the Holkar Stadium in Indore, due to back issues.

After winning the toss in the third and inconsequential tie, with India being 2-0 ahead in the series, Rohit said at the coin toss, "We're going to field first. It's a very high scoring ground, I feel the pitch won't change a lot so nice to know what target is in front of us. Three changes for us, Kohli and KL are out, and Arshdeep misses out for some issues with his back. It is precautionary, nothing serious. We've got Shreyas Iyer, Umesh Yadav and Siraj in. We want to keep challenging ourselves, keep improving and keep batting the same way."

Another injury scare after Jasprit Bumrah? Arshdeep Singh ruled out of India's 3rd T20I vs South Africa

India were dealt a huge blow on Monday evening (October 03) as the BCCI confirmed that Jasprit Bumrah is officially ruled out of the T20 World Cup due to back stress fracture. With no Bumrah, Indian bowlers will have to step up, who have been struggling to contain the run-flow in the death overs. Despite Bumrah's absence, India still have enough firepower to go the distance in the forthcoming T20 WC, however, will the one-time winners will bank upon some of their key players to carry the bulk of responsibility in the forthcoming mega event in Australia, from October-November.

India's key players include skipper Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, Mohammed Shami (who is expected to fill in for Bumrah), Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Dinesh Karthik. Former Indian stumper Saba Karim recently mentioned the player whose form will be absolutely crucial for India in the eighth edition of the men's T20 WC. "Well, one thing I can say is - India's chances of winning the World Cup depend largely on Suryakumar Yadav's form and I say this because he plays in such a difficult position," said Karim on SPORTS18's daily sports news show "Sports Over The Top".

"In the middle overs, in the T20 format, playing with such a high strike rate is not so easy, but it comes so easy for Suryakumar Yadav because of his skill, experience and he's so dexterous. He's got an uncanny ability to find the gaps in the right areas, at times he toys with the bowling and there are several vacant areas which he is able to exploit so easily. So yes Suryakumar Yadav, I hope and pray that he does well and continues with this form even in the World Cup," the former wicketkeeper-cum-selector added.

The right-hander has been in sublime form in 2022, with 793 runs including six fifties and a hundred at a whopping strike rate of 185.28. He has slammed two half-centuries on the trot in the ongoing home T20Is versus South Africa.

India beat South Africa by 16 runs in the second and penultimate T20I, in Guwahati on Sunday (October 2), to win their first-ever home series in the shortest format versus the Proteas. Jos Buttler-less England won the seven-match T20I series versus hosts Babar Azam-led Pakistan on Sunday evening (October 2) in Lahore. In a series which saw the momentum being shifted from one side to the other, Moeen Ali-led England came from behind, trailing 2-3, to win 4-3 with a stunnnig 67-run win in the series finale on Sunday.

Being asked to bat first, Moeen & Co. posted a mammoth 209 for 3, riding on Dawid Malan's 47-ball 78 and handy contributions from other batters. In reply, Babar and Md Rizwan -- the No. 1 T20I batter -- couldn't do much and got perished soon. Shan Masood's 56 was the only shining aspect for the Men in Green as they were restrcted for a modest 148 for 8 to lose by a convincing margin.

After the clash, the stand-in captain lauded his side for putting up a team effort in the series decider but refrained from calling England the favourites heading into the T20 World Cup, in Australia from October 16. "We're really happy to win this series and we go to Australia in a really good position, but I don't think we're favourites for the World Cup. If I'm honest, I don't feel that way at all, but I know we are a very dangerous team to play and other teams will fear playing us. But I still think Australia and India are the two favourites," said Ali.

On the series win, the all-rounder said, "Brilliant game from us, we played well from the start. I thought our bowling was outstanding. Throughout the series, we bowled really well. When the team is batting like that, it gives a lot of confidence. Credit to the boys for the way they played. We needed two must-win games. It was amazing to see how we won the last two games. Also, it shows the depth we have in our squad. Just want to say thank you to everyone, and the PCB for looking after us."

Many former cricketers and experts feel India and Australia are one of the strongest sides heading into the T20 WC Down Under. Both are placed in different groups in the Super 12 but are expected to meet in the semi-finals or the final.

ALSO READ | Virat Kohli to miss 3rd T20I vs SA? Former captain spotted at Mumbai airport after India's series win On the series win, the all-rounder said, "Brilliant game from us, we played well from the start. Just want to say thank you to everyone, and the PCB for looking after us." Many former cricketers and experts feel India and Australia are one of the strongest sides heading into the T20 WC Down Under. Both are placed in different groups in the Super 12 but are expected to meet in the semi-finals or the final. Not England! Moeen Ali names two teams favourites for T20 World Cup in Australia

After India beat South Africa in the second and penultimate T20I, on Sunday evening (October 02) in Guwahati, Virat Kohli is likely to miss the Indore encounter on Tuesday (October 04). Rohit Sharma-led India won their maiden T20I series at home versus the Proteas and now it seems like the Indian team management is set to rest Kohli from the inconsequential tie in Indore.

Thus, it is likely that Kohli won't travel to Indore with the Indian team for the series finale on Tuesday evening. Given that the 33-year-old remains one of India's key players in the run-up to the 2022 T20 World Cup, from October 16 in Australia, it might be possible that Rahul Dravid-Rohit-led team management has rested Kohli with the series already in India's grasp.

Since his international return, during the Asia Cup 2022 edition, Kohli has been in sublime form. He has amassed 404 runs in 10 innings at an average of 57.71 and strike-rate of 141.75; including a ton and three half-centuries. In the India-SA second T20I in Guwahati, the right-hander remained stranded on 49, off 24 balls, and helped India post 237/3. Later, David Miller smacked an impressive 106, off 47 deliveries, but couldn't take his side home as they finished at 221-3.
