A lot transpired in India's senior men's cricket team post their disappointing campign in the 2021 T20 World Cup. While Ravi Shastri-led support staff resigned, Virat Kohli had already announced the decision to step aside from T20I captaincy post the World Cup. However, Kohli was then sacked as ODI captain by the BCCI, in early December, before he also resigned from the top post in Tests.

Thus, the baton was passed to Rohit Sharma as he slowly took over as the full-time captain in early 2022. While Rohit and Rahul Dravid, Shastri's successor, revamped the team and changed India's playing style, being more aggressive with the bat, India went into the T20 World Cup 2022 edition as the No. 1 ranked side and one of the top contenders.

India topped their group in the Super 12 round, however, they bowed out in the semi-finals with a heavy ten-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual winners England. After India's T20 WC campaign, in Australia, former Pakistan skipper Salman Butt has taken a jibe at BCCI for sacking Kohli as captain and made a big claim.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, Butt opined, "When they had sacked Kohli, there was no valid reason for that. The reason was that he did not win an ICC trophy. How many captains have actually won the ICC trophy? Many have spent their entire career without it. Ab jeet liye? (Have they won it now)? He was a quality captain. He wasn't the only reason why the team had lost. It is not that the team has drastically improved now. If it was all about winning then it's not that Dhoni can't play in the T20s."

'One player was ready but not picked' - Kaif names star batter who should've been in India's T20 WC squad

India is gearing up for their upcoming three-match T20I series versus New Zealand, starting on November 18. In the absence of regular captain Rohit Sharma, Hardik Pandya is set to captain India in the T20I series. While Rohit will return for the Bangladesh tour, former India head coach Ravi Shastri feels Hitman can continue to lead in Tests and ODIs whereas the national side can have a separate T20I captain given the amount of cricket being played in a calendar year.

During a select media call organised by Prime Video, Shastri opined, "For T20 cricket, there is no harm in having a new captain. Because the volume of cricket is such that for one player, to play all three formats of the game is never going to be easy. If Rohit is already leading in Tests and ODIs, there is no harm in identifying a new T20I captain and if his name is Hardik Pandya, so be it."

'What do you need that many breaks for' - Shastri not in favour of Dravid being granted frequent rests

India is set to take on New Zealand in the first of the three-match T20I series, in Wellington, on Friday (November 18). After the dismal end to their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign, in Australia, the Men in Blue will start a new cycle, keeping the next edition of the T20 WC in mind, with plenty of youngsters in focus. In the absence of many regular players such as captain Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul, Virat Kohli, etc., the focus will be on stand-in captain Hardik Pandya, his deputy Rishabh Pant, Shubman Gill and the likes.

Ahead of the series opener, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer has chosen a new batting slot for keeper-batter Pant. Many former cricketers believe Pant can be most effective if he bats higher up in the order. Jaffer has also backed the swashbuckling left-hander to open the innings in a series where India are without their key players. "The best place for Pant to bat is at the top of the order,” Jaffer was quoted as saying on ESPNcricinfo. “When fielders are up and Pant gets going at the start of the innings, he becomes a dangerous player like he bats in Tests and ODIs. Once he gets a start of 20-30, then he is dangerous. I don’t think fielders outside doesn’t matter to him,” the veteran further stated.

'His best performances have...' - Ex-India batter suggests batting spot for Rishabh Pant ahead of NZ T20Is

India's run in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition remains a big talking point. After the end of the tournament in Australia, with England beating Pakistan in the final, former cricketers and experts of the game continue to dwell on Rohit Sharma-led Men in Blue's campaign Down Under.

India beat Pakistan, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Netherlands but lost to South Africa (in a low-scoring thriller) and England in a one-sided semi-final contest in Adelaide. Atul Wassan, India's ex-pacer, has now joined the bandwagon and opined on Rohit's captaincy as well as on calls taken by the Indian team management. Further, he opined that India will gain nothing from retaining Rohit as the T20I captain.

"We could see two level of cricketers. At least something should have happened. You can't even find a fault. I feel that you can't blame the captaincy. Afterall, it was the team management that was taking all decisions. Rohit Sharma did not take a single call. He only decided where to hide on the field," former Indian cricketer Atul Wassan told ABP News.

'Rohit only decided where to hide...': Former pacer on Hitman's captaincy after India's T20 WC campaign

India's run in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition ended with a heavy defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals. Being asked to bat first, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, Rohit Sharma-led India rode on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya (33-ball 63) to post an at-par total; 168 for 6. Nonetheless, it wasn't enough as England openers Jos Buttler (40-ball 80) and Alex Hales (46-ball 87 not out) chased down the target with an unbeaten 170-run opening stand with four overs to spare.

With this performance, India's T20 WC dreams were shattered and many have raised fingers at the team selection, captaincy and India's playing template in the shortest format. As wholesome changes are expected going ahead, former Indian chief selector and 1983 ODI World Cup-winning member Kris Srikkanth has named his choice on who should lead India in T20Is in the 2024 T20 World Cup, in West Indies and USA.

"See if I was the chairman of the selection committee, I would say that Hardik Pandya should be the captain of the 2024 World Cup, straight away, I had put it that way – number one," the former chief selector said in an interaction with Star Sports.

Srikkanth also stressed the fact that India desperately need more fast bowling all-rounders. "You need more fast-ball all-rounders. Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul or Rishabh Pant? Former chief selector names India's captain for 2024 T20 World Cup

Rohit Sharma-led India had a disappointing end to the T20 World Cup 2022 campaign. The 2007 winners topped their group to reach the last four round but were demolished by eventual champions England by ten wickets in the semi-finals to return home. Thus, the senior men's team's wait for an ICC title continues since 2013. After their dismal performance in the semi-final, many former cricketers and experts of the game have heavily criticised Team India and their style of play and called for the inclusion of young faces in the T20I set up.

Many expect Hardik Pandya to succeed Rohit as the T20I captain, who will also lead a second-stringed side in the forthcoming three T20Is versus hosts New Zealand, whereas some senior players are expected to take a call on their future in the shortest format. Amid all this, former English spinner Monty Panesar has called for the likes of Rohit, R Ashwin and Dinesh Karthik to retire.

"India disappointed everyone (with the way they lost in the semi-final), and I think there are some retirements coming up," Panesar told Times of India. "Let's be honest. India didn't put up a fight in the semis. It was a completely one-sided affair. Indian bowling looked clueless in front of Buttler and Hales. You are playing the semis and you need to give a solid fight; 168 is not a small score," he pointed out.

The team management will surely have a meeting with these guys and will ask them about their plans... It is time these players make way for young players."

T20WC: India's loss to England in semis 'disappointing' but let's not judge team by one defeat, says Tendulkar

India had another terrible end to their campaign in another men's ICC event with a humiliating ten-wicket loss to England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. On Thursday (November 10), Rohit Sharma & Co. locked horns with Jos Buttler-led England, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, and were asked to bat first.

Riding on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya's scintillating 33-ball 63 to post 168 for 6. In reply, Buttler's 80* and Alex Hales' 47-ball 86 not out led the 2010 winners to the final, where they face Pakistan at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (November 13).

Following this defeat, India remain trophyless in big-ticket events since 2013. Since then, the senior men's team have lost four semis and two finals. 'Don't think any Indian captain...': Gautam Gambhir recalls MS Dhoni's laurels after India's T20 WC exit

Rohit Sharma-led India lost to England by 10 wickets in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Thursday (November 10).
With another heartbreaking result in an ICC event, the senior men's team's wait for a mega title continues since 2013. Post the defeat, many former cricketers have reacted to the T20 WC campaign and opined on the road ahead. Former Indian opener-turned-commentator Virender Sehwag has slammed the senior players and called for the inclusion of young faces who can play fearless cricket.

Sehwag pointed out that senior players are given rest during bilateral series, allowing youngsters to feature in the XI, however, the seniors pip the young guns -- irrespective of their performances in limited opportunities -- and to play the ICC events, where India have been without a title since 2013.

Rohit Sharma-led India lost to England by 10 wickets in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Thursday (November 10). Being asked to bat first, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, India managed a par score of 168 for 6 but Jos Butler's 80 not out and Alex Hales' 86* propelled the Three Lions to the tournament final, where they face Pakistan at the MCG, Melbourne on Sunday (November 13).

Sehwag said on Cricbuzz, "You are winning the bilateral series at home, but you need to see how many of your top players are playing there. T20 World Cup: Ramiz Raja's 'billion-dollar industry team' remark makes heads turn after India's exit

After the end of India's T20 World Cup, where they once again faltered in the semi-finals, head coach Rahul Dravid has been rested for the upcoming tour of New Zealand. In his absence, VVS Laxman will take don the coach's hat for the white-ball tour of NZ.

In addition, a PTI report has claimed that the duo of Hrishikesh Kanitkar and Sairaj Bahutule will join the New Zealand-bound squad, taking up the roles of batting and bowling coach respectively. Earlier, Laxman -- who succeeded Dravid as the NCA chief in December 2021 -- served as the interim head coach in Dravid's absence during a second-stringed India's tour of Ireland (comprising two T20Is), three ODIs in Zimbabwe (mid-August) and last month's three-match 50-over series versus South Africa at home. Moreover, India's U-19 team had also won the 2022 ODI World Cup under Laxman's guidance.

Thus, Laxman is all set to take over the head coach's position in the absence of his former teammate Dravid. The latter has had a busy few months and has been given some break post India's ten-wicket loss to England in the second semi-final of the ongoing T20 WC in Australia.

VVS Laxman to don head coach's hat during India's tour of NZ, Rahul Dravid rested after T20 WC debacle

On Thursday (November 10), Team India faced England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition. While many had already pinned their hopes on an India-Pakistan final, after the latter entered the summit clash with a win over New Zealand on Wednesday (November 09), Jos Butler & Co. thrashed the Men in Blue by 10 wickets, chasing 169, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. Thus, they have now set up a final clash with Babar Azam's led Pakistan.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India managed a decent 168 for 6 riding on half-centuries from Virat Kohli (40-ball 50) and Hardik Pandya's 33-ball 63. In reply, it was a listless performance from the Indian bowlers as Jos Butler-Alex Hales' unbeaten 170-run opening stand buried the 2007 champions Down Under. Butler (49-ball 80*) and Hales' (46-ball 87 not out) smashed as many as 23 boundaries to take the Three Lions home with four overs to spare.

After India's defeat, the senior men's team's ICC-title drought continues since 2013. From 2014-2022, India have lost four semi-finals and three finals. On India's ICC knockouts' achilles' heel, captain Rohit said at the post-match presentation, "Pretty disappointed how it turned up today. We batted well at the backend to get that score. These guys have played under pressure in IPL games, it's all about keeping calm. We were nervy to start with, but you got to give credit to their openers, they played really well."

It's all about keeping calm: Rohit Sharma on India's achilles' heel in ICC knockouts after England hammering

England rode on some good bowling from Chris Woakes (1 for 24), Adil Rashid (1 for 20), and Chris Jordan's 3 for 43 to restrict India to 168 for 6 in 20 overs in the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final, at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide, on Thursday (November 10). It was expected to be a close contest but what followed was total mayhem as the 2010 winners rode on skipper Jos Buttler (49-ball 80*) and Alex Hales' (47-ball 86 not out) unbeaten 170-run opening stand to take their side to the tournament finale, where they face Pakistan.

Hales and Buttler timed everything from the middle of the bat as the Indian bowlers got no assistance from the surface. None of the Indian bowlers looked threatening at any point as the English openers struck as many as ten sixes and 13 fours in the run-chase.

T20 WC: Alex Hales, Jos Buttler bury India Down Under, England to meet Pakistan in final

Team India is set to take on England in the second semi-final of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Thursday (November 10) at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. After registering four wins in the Super 12 round, India topped Group 2 and entered the semi-finals though they had missed out on the semis berth in the last edition in 2021. Before their face-off versus Jos Butler-led Three Lions, former English captain Nasser Hussain talked about India's achilles heel in ICC knockouts.

Over the years, India have reached the knockouts in all ICC events -- barring 2021 T20 WC -- since 2014 but have failed to win the title in the last nine years. India's last mega title came in the 2013 Champions Trophy. In this regard, Hussain pointed out in his column for Daily Mail, "You have to say they have underperformed in world tournaments. At times they have played some timid cricket with the bat for the players they have and when working for Sky last summer their former coach Ravi Shastri said that is something they have to change."

Hussain further wrote, "Rohit Sharma and KL Rahul do play in a slightly old-fashioned way in the first few overs but that has suited India in this tournament because the ball has moved around at the start. India need to be more dynamic if they are going to win World Cups and that is where Suryakumar Yadav — or SKY as he is known — has been so important."

It is to be noted that India have not started well in any of their Super 12 games in the ongoing T20 WC. Openers Rohit and KL Rahul have started off on a slow note and the former has often got out trying to up the ante. The conditions have also favoured the bowlers but Indian openers will like to make a stronger start in the semi-final versus England.

One of India's best performers in the T20 WC has been Suryakumar Yadav, with 225 runs in five games at a strike rate of over 190 (193.97). Speaking on him and Virat Kohli (the leading run-getter with 245 runs with three fifties), Hussain said, "India's dynamism will come at three and four where Virat Kohli is still the master and now has a considerable apprentice in SKY. I don't think I have ever seen a better white-ball innings than the one Kohli played against Pakistan in the group stage at Melbourne. The way he paced his innings as well as some of the shots he played at the end — like hitting Haris Rauf straight back over his head for six — were remarkable. Any professional cricketer watching that on TV would have sat up and just said ‘wow!"
ALSO READ | LIVE | India vs England, T20 World Cup 2022 semi-final match update: Rohit & Co. to take on Three Lions One of India's best performers in the T20 WC has been Suryakumar Yadav, with 225 runs in five games at a strike rate of over 190 (193.97). Any professional cricketer watching that on TV would have sat up and just said ‘wow!" You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. Share your stories and opinions with us here. 'Rohit, Rahul play in an old-fashioned way' - Hussain on where India lose the plot in ICC knockouts

Team India have entered the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2022 edition in Australia. They are now gearing up for their face-off versus 2010 winners England in the semis and will aim to get past Jos Buttler & Co. to enter their third T20 WC final overall. While India have not had an easy ride reaching the last four, they have not had much respite off the field as well with continuous travel.

India started their campaign in Melbourne and then travelled to Sydney before playing their last three games in Perth, Adelaide and Melbourne, respectively. They are now set to take the field at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide for the semis and amid the regular travel, skipper Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and former captain Virat Kohli's heartfelt gestures have now come out in the open. As per reports, the Indian team management have taken an important step to ensure the pacers get enough rest and recover in time amid the regular flight travels.

T20 WC: Rohit, Dravid, Kohli have given up their business class seats for Indian pacers - Reports

The stage is set for the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals. While Pakistan will lock horns with New Zealand in the first semi-final, at the SCG, Sydney on Wednesday (November 09), India will take on England in the second semi-final on Thursday (November 10) at the Adelaide Oval, Adelaide. India and the Three Lions are set to lock horns for the first time in the Men's T20 WC since the 2012 edition and it is expected to go down to the wire.

Some big-ticket players will rub shoulders against each other such as Rohit Sharma, Jos Buttler, Virat Kohli, Ben Stokes, Hardik Pandya, Liam Livingstone, etc. Prior to the highly-awaited face-off, English all-rounder Stokes was all praise for in-form Kohli. The 31-year-old Stokes stated that he failed to understand why people had started to write off a player of Kohli's calibre during his struggle period, prior to the Asia Cup 2022 edition, and believes that it is improbable to do what Kohli has done with the bat across formats for years.

"Look at that form. How unbelievable it is. As you know, he had a not-so-loud couple of months and, for some reason, players like that will get written off. I’ve got no idea why. I think he’s earned the right to never be written off. You don’t produce the number and produce the innings that he does over all three formats," Stokes told reporters in Adelaide ahead of England's semi-final against Rohit-led Men in Blue.

'He plays some shots where.....' - Ben Stokes on Suryakumar Yadav ahead of India-ENG T20 WC SF clash

Rohit Sharma-led India stormed into the T20 World Cup 2022 semi-finals with a big win over Zimbabwe in their last league stage encounter. While India had already qualified for the semis prior to taking the field versus the African nation, following South Africa's shocking exit, they still had to beat Craig Ervine & Co. and the one-time winners managed to do that in style. Batting first, India rode on Suryakumar Yadav's 25-ball 61 not out and KL Rahul's 51 to post a daunting 186 for 5. In reply, India dismissed the opposition for a modest 115 in 17.2 overs to win by 71 runs.

While R Ashwin was the pick of the bowlers, returning with 3 for 23, former Indian captain Kapil Dev remains unimpressed with the wily off-spinner's overall numbers in the ongoing T20 WC in Australia. Rahul Dravid heaps praise on Suryakumar, reveals reason behind No. 1 ranked T20I batter's success

On Wednesday (November 02), Rohit Sharma-led India beat Bangladesh by five runs, DLS method, to win their third game in the Super 12 round of the T20 World Cup in Australia. Being asked to bat first, India rode on fifties from KL Rahul (50) and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 64 to post a competitive 184-6. In reply, a brief rain break revised Bangla Tigers' target to 151 in 16 overs and they eventually managed 145-6.

During Bangladesh's run-chase, Virat Kohli made heads turn as it seemed he tried a fake fielding act during Litton Das-Najmul Shanton's opening stand. The incident took place in the seventh over and was later pointed out by keeper-batter Nurul Hasan (in post-match PC). Had Kohli been found guilty, India would've been penalised five runs -- which turned out to be the difference between both sides.

Bangladesh isn't letting go of the incident and Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to raise the fake fielding issue in a 'proper forum'. BCB cricket operations chairman Jalal Yunus has claimed that captain Shakib spoke at length regarding the fake fielding issue and wet outfield with umpire Marais Erasmus and they plan to take up the issue going ahead.

"We have spoken about it. You have seen it in the TV and everything happened in front of you. There was one regarding fake throw and we have notified the umpires about the fake throw but he said he did not notice it and that is the reason he did not take the review. Shakib discussed a lot about it with Erasmus and even spoke with him after game," Jalal Yunus said as per a report in Cricbuzz.

"Secondly, Shakib had spoken about the wet field and he asked that he can take some more time and let the field get dried and start the game after the field is dried. But... the umpires' decision is final and that is reason there was no place for argument. There was only one decision whether you will play or not play," he further pointed out.

Jalal added, "We have it in our head so that we can raise the issue in the proper forum."

ALSO READ | T20 World Cup 2022: Controversy erupts! Bangladesh's Nurul Hasan accuses Virat Kohli of fake fielding "We have spoken about it.

T20 World Cup: BCB to take up Virat Kohli's fake fielding issue in 'proper forum'

Team India locked horns with Bangladesh in a crucial Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition on Wednesday (November 02). In a rain-marred close encounter, Rohit Sharma & Co. emerged on top by five runs (DLS method) as the Bangla Tigers put up a spirited fight. Being asked to bat first, in Adelaide, Rohit-led India posted 184 for 6 riding on half-centuries from KL Rahul (50) and Virat Kohli (64 not out). In reply, Litton Das started off with a bang and took his side to 66 for no loss in seven overs before a brief rain break led to a revised target; with Bangladesh needing 151 in 16 overs (i.e. 85 off the last 54 balls).

Despite having the momentum before the rain break, and the wet outfield being a disadvantage for India, Bangladesh eventually managed only 145 for 6 to lose by five runs. The match went down to the wire and made heads turn for plenty of reasons. There was an accusation by Bangladesḥ, where they claimed Kohli pulled off a fake fielding act whereas some eyebrows were raised as to why the game resumed despite wet outfield. In this regard, former Pakistan captain and all-rounder Shahid Afridi made a bizarre remark.

"You saw the ground how wet it was. But ICC is inclined towards India. They want to ensure India reaches the semi-finals at any cost. The umpires were also the same who officiated India vs Pakistan & will get the best umpire awards," said Afridi to SAMAA TV.

It is to be noted that wet outfield is advantage to the batting side. Hence, even when play resumed, India had their back against the wall and could've lost had their bowlers and fielders not stepped up in the final nine overs. Moreover, similar attempts were made by umpires to finish the match when rain made its presence felt during Zimbabwe-South Africa and Pakistan-SA clash.

Following India's win over Bangladesh, they are well-placed in Group B to qualify for the semi-finals. With a win over Zimbabwe, they will not only make it to the semis but also top their group.

After losing Rohit Sharma cheaply, KL Rahul's 50 and Virat Kohli's unbeaten 44-ball 64, laced with 8 fours and a six, took India to 184 for 6 in 20 overs. We never had any doubts: Rohit Sharma on Virat Kohli's batting heroics in T20 WC after India beat Bangladesh

Bangladesh put up a spirited fight versus India in a thrilling Super 12 clash in the T20 World Cup 2022, on Wednesday (November 02). Opting to bowl first, Bangladesh bowlers tried their best but rode on half-centuries from KL Rahul (50) and Virat Kohli (64 not out), India posted a competitive 184 for 6. In reply, Litton Das came out all guns blazing and his quickfire fifty took the Bangla Tigers to 66 for no loss in seven overs before rain interrupted proceedings and sucked the momentum out of Bangladesh's run-chase.

During the break, there was a brief discussion between both the captains, Shakib Al Hasan and Rohit Sharma, and the on-field umpires.
During Pakistan's Netherlands face-off in the T20 World Cup 2022 edition, in Perth on October 30, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir made heads turn with his remark on Babar Azam. The Pakistan captain has been slammed left, right and centre following the Men in Green's dismal run so far in the competition.

When the one-time winners' playing XI didn't feature Fakhar Zaman, who is battling injury concerns in the run-up to the T20 WC, Babar was heavily criticised. Even when Fakhar was roped in for the clash versus the Dutch line-up, he batted at No. 3 whereas Pakistan continued to open with Babar and Md Rizwan, who have been criticised for their slow starts.

Thus, Gambhir slammed Babar and said during commentary of the Pakistan-Netherlands face-off, “In my opinion, first, you think about your team instead of yourself; if nothing goes according to your plan, you should have sent Fakhar Zaman up the batting order. This is called selfishness; as a captain, it is easy to be selfish."
