On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced India's squads for the white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway next year on January 03 in Mumbai. As expected, Hardik Pandya has once again been named as the captain of the T20I squad with no big guns available whereas Rohit Sharma will return to take charge of the ODI line-up after his thumb injury during the Bangladesh tour. Hardik has also been promoted as the new ODI vice-captain (despite KL Rahul's presence).

Some of the notable factors from the T20I line-up is that Suryakumar Yadav has been named as the vice-captain, which doesn't include the likes of Rahul, Rishabh Pant, etc. Meanwhile, it is a young squad including the likes of Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ishan Kishan, Sanju Samson, Axar Patel, Umran Malik, Mukesh Kumar (recently bought by Delhi Capitals in IPL 2023 mini-auction for INR 5 crores), etc. It gives one a sneak peek of the selectors' mindset keeping in view the next edition of the T20 World Cup, in the West Indies and USA, in 2024.

Talking about the ODI squad, Pant remains absent from it as well. Pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar is also not part of both squads. The biggest omission is Shikhar Dhawan, who has struggled for runs and has seen a sharp decline in his strike rate amid rising stocks of Kishan and Gill. Meanwhile, Md Shami also returned whereas the likes of Rahul and Kohli will feature straightaway in the 50-over series. There's no mention of Jasprit Bumrah and Ravindra Jadeja as the duo are expected to return for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

BCCI's official Twitter handle released the squads via separate posts:

IND vs SL: Hardik Pandya to lead in T20Is, promoted as ODI vice-captain with Shikhar Dhawan dropped

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) named India's T20I and ODI squad for their forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka. The new year starts with India hosting Sri Lanka in three T20Is and ODIs each before New Zealand's white-ball tour and Australia's visit to the Asian country for four Tests and three ODIs. Hardik Pandya was appointed as the T20I squad whereas Rohit Sharma will return for the SL ODIs with the former being named his deputy despite KL Rahul's presence.

With Rahul being demoted and Hardik's stocks rising as captain, veteran Team India keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik feels Rohit and the star all-rounder will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the 2023 ODI World Cup. During a conversation in Cricbuzz, the 37-year-old pointed out that 'Hardik has thrown his name strongly in the mix' and will remain in the leadership group for quite long.

Karthik told, "Absolutely. I think leadership definitely, for me, is a close call. And I think it will be between Rohit and Hardik Pandya. These two are the big names. I know KL Rahul has been the white-ball vice-captain, but I do think Hardik Pandya has thrown his name strongly in the mix and it will be captain vice-captain role between a Hardik and a Rohit in the coming 12 months, because I think he has shown his skills in the IPL as a leader and that might be coming through soon for Team India as well."

"So, for the moment, it looks like even though there are a lot of other leaders who have captained India in the recent 12 months because of the amount of cricket played with the likes of Shikhar Dhawan, KL Rahul, Rishabh Pant. All these players donning the captain's hat for a bit. Jasprit Bumrah as well. But for the moment, it will be a toss up between Rohit and Hardik Pandya or rather Rohit and Hardik Pandya will be the captain and vice-captain leading into the World Cup for sure," concluded the keeper-batter.

Hardik is being touted as the next T20I captain as the BCCI selectors want a new squad to take charge in the shortest format with the next edition of the T20 World Cup in 2024, in West Indies and USA.

India's No. 3 Cheteshwar Pujara revealed the reason behind team management's plan to promote Axar Patel ahead of Virat Kohli in the batting order during their nervy 145-run chase versus Bangladesh in the just-concluded second and final Test in Dhaka. With India being reduced to 12 for 2 in the final session on Day 3, many expected Kohli to walk out at his usual batting slot; i.e. No. 4.

Nonetheless, the Rahul Dravid-led team management surprised one and all and sent out Axar. Sunil Gavaskar, the former Indian opener-turned-commentator, wasn't impressed with the move and told on Sony Sports, "It didn't send a good message to Kohli. He is the best batsman in the world. Unless Kohli himself asked for it, then it's a different matter. We don't know what happened in the changing room. But it's hard to understand. Axar has played well, of course."

Jadeja, part of the Hindi panel, opined, "He is the world's best player. 15 overs were left. Saba Karim said it could have been because of the left-right combination, which is an obvious thought, but then I feel - did Rishabh Pant take a sleeping pill? I will also say that it is easy for us to say this from here; we don't know if someone was not feeling well."

Pujara, who won the Player-of-the-Series award, opened up on the move after the series triumph. Talking to the broadcasters, he gave an insight behind Axar's promotion and said, "It was a very good move because among their three strike bowlers, two were left-arm spinners. Axar is a left-hander, so he was sent to tackle them and to have a batter who can bat sensibly in the initial period against the Kookaburra ball. It was a crucial move for us. That was an important phase of the game where we didn't want to lose too many wickets in the evening, and he could have batted cautiously. So I was not surprised. When you are chasing a 145-run total, every run is important, and the way he batted, his innings was very valuable for us."

The left-handed Axar played a cautious 69-ball 34 whereas Kohli departed for 1 during India's three-wicket win over the Bangla Tigers. Shreyas Iyer's 29 not out and R Ashwin's 62-ball 42* held their nerves and took India home after they were reeling at 74-7 in the morning session of Day 4.

Ishan Kishan created history by becoming the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs during the India-Bangladesh series in the latter's own backyard. Kishan opened the innings in the third ODI, on December 10 in Chattogram, with Shikhar Dhawan, in regular captain Rohit Sharma's injury, and made the most of his chances by slamming a mammoth 131-ball 210; the fastest and youngest to score a 200 in the format.

After the knock, the 24-year-old Kishan is expected to don the blues for a long time and has a strong chance to stake his claim in India's white-ball sides following his marathon inning versus the Bangla Tigers. Coming from Jharkhand, he is reckoned as the next-big-thing for India after MS Dhoni. Dhoni, who put Jharkhand on the map, had a stellar career for Team India -- with 17,266 international runs, 829 dismissals and leading India to three ICC titles -- has been Kishan's idol and the youngster reacted to him being compared with MSD.

Speaking to OneCricket, as quoted by News 18, Kishan said, "I love Gilchrist’s batting and wicketkeeping but about Dhoni Bhai; I’ve seen him on and off the field. The way he keeps his calmness intact and meets everyone. So, these things also matter in life, like how you function and get to know such a big player who functions in what way. So, I think, he has helped me a lot to understand those things."

Kishan added, "I take it [comparison with Dhoni] in a very positive way. I think, ‘Ok. If people are comparing me with MS, that means I’ve got something in me that’s why they want me to see at his place.’ So, I feel, If I can do 70 percent of what he has done for the country, I’ll be happy. Because he has done enough. He made us win ODI & T20 World Cups and the Champions Trophy. There are so many things and even I want to be in that situation where I can make my team win."

Kishan will be looking forward to India's upcoming white-ball series, at home, versus Sri Lanka, New Zealand and Australia before IPL 2023. The left-hander will want to remain consistent and aim for few more daddy hundreds to cement his place in the side.

Shreyas Iyer (29 not out) and R Ashwin (unbeaten 42) helped India win the second and final Test versus Bangladesh on December 25 (Sunday). Resuming Day 4 of the series finale, India were in need of 100 more runs, being 45 for 4, on a tough batting surface. At one stage, India were 74 for 7 before Ashwin-Iyer stitched a valuable eighth-wicket stand and took the visitors past the finish line in Dhaka.

After the end of the series, Iyer signed off 2022 on a high. He has been on a roll in every format and ended with 422, 724 and 463 runs in Tests, ODIs and T20Is, respectively. He averaged 55.69 in ODIs, 60.28 in Tests and ended with a strike rate of 141.16 in the shortest format. He looked most comfortable while batting on Day 4 versus the Bangladeshi spinners and smacked a few boundaries to bring down the equation before Ashwin took charge and led India home in the Dhaka run-chase.

Now, former Indian cricketer Mohammed Kaif has lavished huge praise on Iyer, calling him an all-format player. Kaif feels he is a complete batter and is even improving himself in tackling the short balls. "He is not scoring hundreds but scoring continuously in every match. If I was the coach, I will say that I can bet on him for at least 60 runs. He didn't look troubled at all, even if you talk about the ODIs," Kaif told Sony Sports.

"He can play all three formats. He has confirmed his spot in ODIs and Tests. You will play T20Is against Sri Lanka and New Zealand before the Test matches, so you should try him out. He is a player who hits sixes and also knows how to defend," Kaif opined.

Kaif, the 2002 Natwest Trophy hero, further asserted, "He is a proper batter, it is not that he has any weakness. Yes, people talk about the short ball but he will get better while playing."He didn't score too many runs in this knock but the time at which he came to bat, when the bowlers were dominating, the ball was turning, he removed the pitch from his mind and just watched the ball."

He can play all three formats: Md Kaif lavishes huge praise on Shreyas Iyer after Bangladesh Tests

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had a good run leading the Indian team in the just-concluded Bangladesh Test, which the tourists won 2-0. He, however, fell flat as a batter while opening the innings with Shubman Gill. Rahul only managed scores of 22, 23, 10 and 2 in the four outings whereas Gill scored his maiden hundred in the format during the series opener in Chattogram.

After the Bangladesh Tests, India have a stern task ahead as they gear up to host Australia in the upcoming edition of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy at home, starting on February 09. Ahead of the marquee series, on home soil, veteran Indian keeper-batter Dinesh Karthik has issued a warning to Rahul to up his game or he will be left out with Gill's rising stocks.

“I would give KL those couple of Test matches, but if things don’t go KL Rahul’s way; the one thing that does go against him is the fact that he has played over 40 Tests and his average is just mid-30s. There have been reports of Rahul being dropped from India's T20I line-up as well. The Men in Blue will host Sri Lanka, followed by New Zealand, in a white-ball series before the BG Trophy versus Pat Cummins' Australia.

Stand-in captain KL Rahul had a good run leading the Indian team in the just-concluded Bangladesh Test, which the tourists won 2-0. He, however, fell flat as a batter while opening the innings with Shubman Gill.

That is not acceptable for an opener. That is one of the lowest among Indian players for sure, who have played 35 Test matches," Karthik said while speaking on Cricbuzz. India's ongoing tour of Bangladesh saw Ishan Kishan create history. Kishan featured in India's playing XI in the third and final ODI, with regular captain Rohit Sharma being injured, and opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan. He looked in his elements from the word go and smashed a magnificent 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes, to become the fourth Indian to enter the 200-run club in ODIs.

Kishan became the youngster and fastest to score an ODI double ton. Overall, he became only the seventh to join the elite club -- comprising legends such as Sachin Tendulkar, Virender Sehwag, Rohit, etc. Despite his recent heroics, the 24-year-old remains grounded and is destined for more success. Recently, a fan requested Ishan to give an autograph on his cellphone -- above MS Dhoni's. To this, the youngster won hearts with his gesture.

Kishan said in a video shared on Twitter, “Mahi bhai ka hai signature aur uske upar bol rahe hain mera karne…mereko thoda ho nahi raha hai (This is Mahi bhai’s signature and you are telling me to sign above it. I can’t do this). "Mahi bhai ka signature hai upar, abhi humlog utna pahunche nahi hai wahan par…neeche karta hun “I have not reached the level of MS Dhoni, I will sign in the bottom)," added the Indian keeper-batter. 2022 is coming to an end. The calendar year has been an eventful one for sports lovers across the globe. The cricketing fans have had plenty to cheer for with a plethora of big events passing by. Talking about the Indian cricket team, it was another action-packed year with plenty of highs and some glaring lows. The calendar year is set to end after a few international assignments left for both senior men's and women's teams. Let's have a quick recap of 2022:

Men in Blue in 2022

The year started with India continuing their tour of South Africa. After winning the Boxing Day Test match, Virat Kohli-led India had a 1-0 lead against Dean Elgar-led Proteas and was aiming for an unassailable 2-0 scoreline, which would've meant their maiden Test series triumph in the African nation. The second and penultimate Test started with skipper Kohli ruled out, due to upper back spasm, and KL Rahul led the side as they lost the match by seven wickets.

The same fate followed suit for India in the third and final Test, once again losing by seven wickets, despite Kohli's return. After the series, the 33-year-old dropped a bombshell by resigning as the Test captain. He wrote on Twitter, "It's been 7 years of hard work, toil and relentless perseverance everyday to take the team in the right direction. I've done the job with absolute honesty and left nothing out there. Everything has to come to a halt at some stage and for me as Test Captain of India, it's now."

"There have been many ups and also some downs along the journey, but never has there been a lack of effort or lack of belief. I have always believed in giving my 120 percent in everything I do, and if I can't do that, I know it's not the right thing to do. I have absolute clarity in my heart and I cannot be dishonest to my team," Kohli added.

By then, Kohli's fallout with the top brass at the BCCI had already made the headlines; following the 2021 T20 World Cup and his sacking as the ODI captain in early December. While news channels ran plenty of shows on Kohli vs BCCI alleged spat, Team India embarked upon a new journey under full-time captain Rohit Sharma and head coach Rahul Dravid.

With Rohit unfit for the SA ODIs, Rahul led India in three ODIs as the visitors were whitewashed 3-0 with several questions being raised on their outdated approach in the format.

Home comforts

After the miserable SA tour, India switched to home comforts by hosting West Indies in a white-ball series, comprising three T20Is and ODIs each, followed by three T20Is and two Tests versus Sri Lanka. As expected, India stream rolled both the oppositions by whitewashing all four series. Amid injury concerns to Ravindra Jadeja, Rahul, etc., India got busy in preparing a team for the T20 World Cup in Australia.

IPL 2022

The action shifted to the 15th season of IPL in March-May. While top cricketers such as Virat, Rohit, Jadeja, Bumrah, etc. struggled or didn't perform as per expectations, the likes of Umran Malik, Mohsin Khan, Rajat Patidar, Rahul Tripathi, Kuldeep Yadav, Deepak Hooda, etc. made a mark; spoiling the national selectors and team management with more choices for the T20 WC Down Under.

India host South Africa

After the IPL, Team India captaincy became a game of musical chairs. With Rohit rested and KL injured, Rishabh Pant led India in a five-match T20I series which ended in a 2-2 stalemate. Hardik Pandya, Dinesh Karthik, and Harshal Patel were the most impressive.

India tour of Ireland, England

With Rohit and other senior players busy preparing for the one-off Test versus England, i.e. the series finale of the five Tests from the incomplete 2021 tour, Hardik led India in two T20Is against Ireland. Coach Dravid was also involved with the red-ball side, leading NCA chief VVS Laxman to fill in for him in Dublin. India beat the Irish camp 1-0. In the series finale versus England, India was led by pacer Jasprit Bumrah with Rohit ruled out due to Covid concerns.

Under Bumrah, India achieved a sizeable 132-run lead in the Edgbaston face-off, however, failed to defend a challenging 378-run target to lose by seven wickets. After SA, Team India faltered and lost a big opportunity to win a memorable series overseas.

White-ball dominance

After the disappointments of Edgbaston, India played hosts England in three T20Is and ODIs each. The likes of Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik, Rishabh Pant, Bumrah, etc., impressed as Rohit & Co. won both the series 2-1. Post the England trip, India travelled to West Indies with a second-stringed Shikhar Dhawan-led team playing the Windies in three ODIs and winning every game.

In the five T20Is, Rohit returned and led India to a 4-1 series win. The tour saw impressive performances from Shubman Gill, Axar Patel, Shardul Thakur, Surya, Arshdeep Singh, and Ravi Bishnoi.

Asia Cup

After a short tour of Zimbabwe, where Rahul led India to a 3-0 ODI series win, the dress rehearsal began for the T20 WC. With less than two months left, India entirely shifted to the T20 mode with the continental tournament in the UAE. Winning two back-to-back games, India topped their group and proceeded to the Super Four round. After losing to Pakistan in a closely-fought match, the Men in Blue succumbed to a shocking six-wicket loss to eventual winners Sri Lanka and bowed out of the competition without booking a place in the final. It was a big jolt before the ICC event in Australia.

Once again, home series to the rescue!

The Australia and South Africa home series wins worked as a balm following India's Asia Cup debacle. The three T20Is versus Aaron Finch-led Australia was an intense affair where India emerged on top (2-1). The series win was followed by another top-class performance versus the Proteas, winning 2-1 in three T20Is. India had some inconsistency to address at the top, debates continued with regard to one or two spots but the national side left for Australia as the No. 1 ranked side and a strong contender to end their 15-year-long wait for the T20 WC trophy. Nonetheless, they had lost the services of Bumrah and Deepak Chahar due to injury concerns.

Similar issues push India back in the mega event...

India started the tournament by winning a warm-up game versus hosts and defending champions Australia. Their warm-up game versus New Zealand was washed out. On October 23, Rohit-led India played their tournament opener versus arch-rivals Pakistan. In a nerve-wracking contest at the MCG, Melbourne, the one-time winners India rode on Virat Kohli's masterclass 82 to beat Pakistan on the last ball, chasing 160, with four wickets.

Rohit & Co. comfortably beat the Netherlands by 56 runs before losing to South Africa by five wickets in an intense low-scoring thriller at Perth. This followed with a dramatic and controversial win over Bangladesh, by 5 runs (DLS method), before India thrashed Zimbabwe by 71 runs to top their group and storm into the semi-finals.

In the semis, India faced eventual winners England who gave them a reality check. Playing timid cricket with the bat, not backing a seasoned wrist spinner in Yuzvendra Chahal (who warmed the bench in the entire tournament), and lacking spice and variety in their bowling attack led to India's exit as they lost to England by ten wickets while defending a moderate 168/6 in Adelaide.

A new dawn with the 2023 ODI WC in mind

After the T20 WC, India toured NZ for three T20Is and ODIs each. While Hardik led the side in T20Is, winning 1-0, Dhawan & Co. lost the ODIs by same the margin which exposed India's lack of extra bowling options and their muddled approach at the top along with several takers for the middle-order spots. Currently, India is in Bangladesh for the three ODIs and two Tests (having lost the ODIs 2-1 and leading the Test series 1-0 with the final Test on December 22).

Women in Blue in 2022

The senior women's team completely outplayed their male counterparts in the calendar year. India started the year with a tour of New Zealand; a final preparatory series before the 2022 ODI World Cup in the Kiwi land. It was a miserable series with India losing the only T20I and going down in the five ODIs (1-4).

CWC 2022

In Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami's final WC appearance, India never achieved consistency to go all the way. There were some moments of brilliance met by some below-par performances but the Indian eves' Achilles heel remained their knack of succumbing under pressure; leading to an early exit. India beat the likes of Pakistan, Bangladesh, and West Indies but lost against all big teams such as England, NZ, Australia and South Africa to end in the fifth position.

The big retirement

After the World Cup, it was only a matter of time before Mithali would've hung up her boots. On June 08, she announced her international retirement, bringing an end to a stellar career.

In her illustrious 23-year-long international career, Mithali ended with the most runs in women's ODIs (7,805). In 89 T20Is, the 39-year-old returned with 2,364 runs and amassed 699 runs in 12 Tests, comprising a double ton. Under Mithali's leadership, India reached the ODI World Cup final in the 2005 and 2017 editions.

A promising first impression in CWG 2022

Cricket was re-included in the Commonwealth Games during the 2022 edition in Birmingham, England. This was the first time that women's teams competed in the mega event where Harmanpreet Kaur-led Indian eves returned with a silver medal. While they once again fell flat in the final hurdle, Harman & Co. impressed enough to end with silver; beating the likes of Pakistan, Barbados, and England but closely losing twice to gold medallists Australia.

Smriti Mandhana, Harman, Jemimah Rodrigues, Renuka Singh, and Sneh Rana were the top performers in India's inspiring campaign.

India create history in England

India toured England for a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs. While the tourists went down in the T20Is, losing 1-2, they created history as the women's team won its first ODI series in England since 1999. Moreover, India went on to whitewash the 2017 champions in their own backyard.

The third and final ODI was, however, marred with controversy as Deepti Sharma running Charlie Dean out became a big talking point. It opened a pandora's box leading to much talk on the spirit of cricket, the laws of the game, etc. Nonetheless, nothing can be taken away from India's clinical performance in the ODIs.

Asia Cup dominance

While their male counterparts failed to even reach the final, Harmanpreet-led India stormed into the summit clash winning six out of seven games. In the final, India thrashed Sri Lanka by eight wickets to win the title for the seventh time. They buried the ghosts of the 2018 edition, in Kuala Lampur, (the only time they missed the glory) to make a strong statement.

Apart from the highs of the women's team and some golden opportunities missed by the Men in Blue, the U-19 boys also shined by winning the ODI World Cup early this year. Overall, it was a mixed bag for the senior men's side along with plenty of highs -- amid the retirements of stalwarts Mithali and Jhulan -- for their women counterparts in 2022.

With some assignments still left, both men's and women's line-ups will hope to end the year on a high as 2023 awaits with a new set of challenges.

2022 is coming to an end. The calendar year has been an eventful one for sports lovers across the globe. The cricketing fans have had plenty to cheer for with a plethora of big events passing by.

Currently, India is in Bangladesh for the three ODIs and two Tests (having lost the ODIs 2-1 and leading the Test series 1-0 with the final Test on December 22). Also read: India tour of Bangladesh: Full squads, schedule, timings, telecast - All you need to know Women in Blue in 2022 The senior women's team completely outplayed their male counterparts in the calendar year. India started the year with a tour of New Zealand; a final preparatory series before the 2022 ODI World Cup in the Kiwi land. It was a miserable series with India losing the only T20I and going down in the five ODIs (1-4). CWC 2022 In Mithali Raj and Jhulan Goswami's final WC appearance, India never achieved consistency to go all the way. The big retirement After the World Cup, it was only a matter of time before Mithali would've hung up her boots. On June 08, she announced her international retirement, bringing an end to a stellar career. Thank you for all your love & support over the years! I look forward to my 2nd innings with your blessing and support. pic.twitter.com/OkPUICcU4u — Mithali Raj (@M_Raj03) June 8, 2022 × In her illustrious 23-year-long international career, Mithali ended with the most runs in women's ODIs (7,805). In 89 T20Is, the 39-year-old returned with 2,364 runs and amassed 699 runs in 12 Tests, comprising a double ton. Under Mithali's leadership, India reached the ODI World Cup final in the 2005 and 2017 editions. A promising first impression in CWG 2022 Cricket was re-included in the Commonwealth Games during the 2022 edition in Birmingham, England. India create history in England India toured England for a white-ball series comprising three T20Is and an equal number of ODIs. Asia Cup dominance While their male counterparts failed to even reach the final, Harmanpreet-led India stormed into the summit clash winning six out of seven games.

From World Cup heartbreaks to CWG'22 silver medal: Reliving Team India's 2022

The FIFA World Cup 2022 edition lived up to expectations. The riveting group stage was followed by the Round of 16, hard-fought quarters, semi-finals before the final was one for the ages, involding Argentina and France. The two heavyweights locked horns, at the Lusail Stadium in Qatar, where Lionel Messi-led Argentina line-up ended their 36-year-drought to win the FIFA World Cup trophy in a nail-biting finale. After leading the French line-up 2-0 till the 80th minute, Argentina conceded two goals in succession before the match remained poised, at 3-3, after end of extra time. In the penalty shootout, Argentina edged past the defending champions, by a 4-2 margin, to end on a high.

Post the end of the FIFA WC, in Qatar, some eerie similarities have been brought forward between Master Blaster Sachin Tendulkar's 2011 ODI World Cup run and Messi's overall journey in the recently-concluded event in the Middle East. Here are some glaring similarities:

1: Both donned Jersey No. 10

2. Both Tendulkar and Messi had lost the World Cup final eight years back. SRT-starrer India had lost the 2003 ODI WC final whereas Argentina came second, versus Germany, in the 2014 final of the FIFA WC.

SRT won it in India-Pakistan tie in 2011 whereas Messi returned with the award in the semi-final versus Croatia for solitary goal and splendid assist to Julian Alvarez.

4. Both ended their last WC winning the coveted title. While Tendulkar won it in his sixth WC, Messi got to the feat in his fifth attempt.

After taking Argentina to the mega title, Messi spoke about his international future, having already cleared the air that this was his last WC. Post his side's historic win, he told TyC Sports, as quoted by Goal.com, "No, I'm not going to retiring from the Argentina national team. I want to continue playing as a champion." In addition, the 35-year-old returned with the Golden Ball Award, becoming the first player to win it twice (having earlier won in 2014).

Meanwhile, Tendulkar took to his official Twitter handle and wrote, "Many congratulations to Argentina on doing this for Messi! Wonderful comeback from the way they started the campaign. Special mention to Martinez for the spectacular save towards the end of extra time. That was a clear indication to me that Argentina would clinch this."

All aligned for the 'stars'! Here's EERIE similarities between SRT's 2011 ODI WC & Messi's FIFA WC run

Virat Kohli had had an eventful 2022. He started the year by leading India in the three Tests versus hosts South Africa and after the 2-1 series loss, he stepped aside from the red-ball captaincy after having resigned as the T20I skipper and being sacked as the ODI captain. His fallout with the BCCI top management became a huge talking point. After that, the Indian cricket fans desperately waited for Kohli's return to form. While he did manage few good scores, he remained below-par especially during IPL 2022, India tour of England before being rested for the white-ball tour of West Indies.

Following the white-ball series versus the Windies, Kohli returned to the Indian team for the Asia Cup 2022 edition, in the UAE, where he ended his two-year-long century drought and ended as the second-highest run-getter. Since then, he has remained among runs -- especially in the shortest format of the game. He ended as the highest run-getter in the 2022 T20 World Cup, in Australia, with 296 runs in six matches and recently scored his first ODI ton, since August 2019, during the ongoing Bangladesh tour. Recently, in a video shared by BCCI’s official Twitter handle on Thursday (December 15), Indian head coach Rahul Dravid opened up on Kohli and heaped praise on him for his hard work and approach towards the game. Dravid, in particular, lauded the former Indian captain for his preparation levels, which can be a great lesson for youngsters.

Dravid said, "Virat has an incredible template. For me, he has been one of the standouts over the last year and a half. Just watch the way he trains and prepares. That never changes with respect to whether he is doing well or not. I think that is a great lesson for a lot of young players coming into the group."

'That is a great lesson...': Rahul Dravid heaps praise on Virat Kohli for his preparation levels - Watch

Ishan Kishan made the headlines by slamming a memorable 210 in India's third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh on December 10. Coming in place for injured Rohit Sharma, Kishan opened the innings with Shikhar Dhawan and looked impressive from the word go. Losing Dhawan early, the swashbuckling left-hander stitched a mammoth 290-run second-wicket stand with Virat Kohli (113) to help India post 409-8 before KL Rahul & Co. won by a massive 227-run margin.

Kishan, thus, became only the fourth Indian to hit a double century in the 50-over format. Overall, he became only the seventh batter to join the elusive double-hundred club. After his splendid knock, Kishan's father recently revealed the advice he gave to him. Speaking to The Indian Express, Pranav Kumar Pandey -- Kishan's father -- said, "Jab century maarta hai mai jyada kuch nahi bolta, puri duniya se shabaashi mil rahi hoti hai (When he scores runs, I don’t say much to him because he receives the congratulatory message from everyone)."

"He called me after the match, and I told him, ‘next match you will again start from zero. Don’t let this double hundred get into your head," Pandey added. The 24-year-old Ishan wasn't part of India's 2022 T20 World Cup squad despite being in the scheme of things for quite long time. Recalling the conversation he had with his dejected son, post the T20 WC squad announcement, Pandey revealed, "He was dejected, he was tense, and I have never seen him like that ever. He is a fun-loving kid, but when he was not picked, he was sad. At home, he would not sleep; he would walk on the terrace at night."

"So one day, I sat him down and told him to stop feeling sorry for himself. From now on, your job should be to make sure that they don’t get an excuse to drop you. Let your bat do the talking; you are still very young. There is a 50-over World Cup next year; prepare for that and make all the opportunities count," Pandey signed off.

Ishan has added to the selection headache with his superb knock versus the Bangla Tigers. It will be interesting to see if he now pips Dhawan and Shubman Gill, having a good run across formats, to open in the forthcoming white-ball home series versus Sri Lanka and New Zealand starting from early 2023.

'Don't let this 200...' - Ishan Kishan's father reveals advice he gave to his son after his mammoth knock

It was an action-packed Day 2 of the first Test between India and Bangladesh in Chattogram on Thursday (Decemebr 15). After ending the first day's play at 278 for 6, India relied on Shreyas Iyer to get a daddy hundred and take India well past the 400-run mark. While Iyer fell for 86, R Ashwin took charge and his 58 and Kuldeep Yadav's 40 took India to 404 all-out. At stumps on Day 2, India have tighened the screws on Bangladesh with the hosts reeling at 133 for 8 with Kuldeep and Md Siraj wreaking havoc with the ball.

After India lost Iyer early in the day, the onus fell on Ashwin and he stitched a valuable 92-run eighth-wicket stand with Kuldeep. During their partnership, India were awarded five runs on penalty due to Bangladesh's field error. The incident took place in the 112th over with Taijul Islam bowling to the Indian spin duo. Ashwin got a thick edge on the second delivery of the over and the ball raced towards the third-man region. The throw hit the helmet placed right behind the wicketkeeper Mushfiqur Rahim and India got lucky with five runs being added to the team total. The video of the moment has gone viral on social media platform Twitter. Here's the clip:

After end of the day's play, KL Rahul & Co. are in the driver's seat. They will look to wrap up the Bangladeshi innings in a flash on Day Three and either enforce a follow-on or opt to bat again and give a massive target for the hosts. The pitch is expected to favour the slower bowlers and, hence, Ashwin-Kuldeep might continue to dominate the hapless Bangladeshi line-up.

India will aim for a clinical start to the series and anything less than a 2-0 whitewash will be disappointing for them given a ICC World Test Championship final ticket, for the ongoing second cycle, remains up for grabs.

Watch: India awarded 5 penalty runs due to Bangladesh's error on Day 2 of Chattogram Test

Jaydev Unadkat earned a Test recall after a long time when India announced him as replacement for the injured Mohammed Shami in the run-up to the first Test between Bangladesh and India, in Chattogram. However, the 31-year-old hasn't joined the KL Rahul-led Indian squad for the series opener of the two-match Test series and is stuck at home, in Rajkot, due to visa issues.

As per a report in Cricbuzz, the BCCI's logistics department is busy trying to transport him to Bangladesh but Unadkat remains in India amid the start of the Test series in Chattogram on Wednesday (December 14). It is to be noted that the BCCI organises visas for all the players who can potentially be in the selectors' radar in order to avoid any last minute logistical issue. In Unadkat's case, it seems a pre-booking was not in place as he remains a surprise addition with Shami's injury. The Saurashtra pacer made his Test debut back in december 2010 and is returning to the red-ball squad after 12 years. Hence, he may not have been in the logistic department's eyes even though he was apparently seen as an option by the outgoing selection committee.

Unadkat didn't have a great debut in whites back in 2010 during India's tour of South Africa. However, he has done the hard yards in domestic circuit. Apart from leading Saurashtra to several laurels, the left-arm pacer ended as the highest wicket-taker of the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy by accounting for 67 scalps. Apart from leading Saurashtra to several laurels, the left-arm pacer ended as the highest wicket-taker of the 2019-20 Ranji Trophy by accounting for 67 scalps. BAN vs IND 2022: Jaydev Unadkat misses first Test after being stuck in India due to visa issues

Team India has been a pale shadow of themselves in the Bangladesh ODIs. After losing the series opener, in defence of 187 in Dhaka, Rohit Sharma-led India went down in the second and penultimate ODI to lose by five runs and concede an unassailable 2-0 lead to the Bangla Tigers. With one game to go, to be held on Saturday (December 10) at Chattogram, 1983 World Cup-winning hero Madan Lal has slammed the team citing there is a lack of intensity and passion among players.

"Definitely the Indian team is not going in the right direction. I have not seen the intensity in the team of late. I have not seen 'Josh' in them in the last couple of years," Lal was quoted as saying by PTI. "They are not looking like an Indian team at all. That passion for playing for the country is missing. Either their bodies are too tired or they are just going through the motions. And this is a serious concern."

The former cricketer also slammed the seniors such as Rohit, Virat Kohli and Shikhar Dhawan for not making daddy hundreds and leading from the front. While Kohli regained form in T20Is, he hasn't done anything extraordinary in ODIs -- his most preferred format -- whereas Dhawan's strike rate has also gone down. It is to be noted that since the start of 2020; the trio have only one ton in ODI cricket combined -- coming from Rohit Sharma's blade in January 2020. Thus, Lal pointed out, "If you see the record, how many centuries they (seniors) have scored in the last three years? And how many in the last one year? With the age factor, your hand-eye coordination slows down. But they are experienced players, and they should have performed. If your top order does not perform, you are not going to win."

Madan Lal also cautioned India to change their approach and look for more specialists in white-ball format. "Every country is playing like that. Must have specialised cricketers for different formats. Why not have different players for different formats? All countries are doing it and India should also do the same," he added.

India will lock horns with Bangladesh in the third and remaining ODI on Saturday and look to avoid a whitewash at the hands of the Bangla Tigers. Captain Rohit is ruled out due to his thumb injury and a final report is awaited on his participation in the upcoming two Tests versus the Bangladeshi line-up, starting on December 14.

Passion of playing for country is missing: Madan Lal slams Team India after ODI series loss vs Bangladesh

On Wednesday (December 07), India lost to Bangladesh in the second and penultimate ODI to concede an unassailable lead to the home side with a game to go. After reducing Bangla Tigers to 69 for 6, Indian bowlers were clueless against the pair of Mahmudullah-Mehedi Hasan as the duo stitched an impressive 148-run seventh-wicket stand and took their side to a challenging 271/7 after opting to bat first in Dhaka. In reply, India gave a spirited fight, courtesy of Shreyas Iyer (82), Axar Patel (56) and captain Rohit Sharma's 28-ball 51*, but lost by five runs.

During the contest, India lost the services of their captain Rohit who injured his webbing while fielding at the slips in the second over. Further, Deepak Chahar hurt his hamstring after bowling just three overs and returned only during the run-chase (making an 18-ball 11). Prior to the game, Kuldeep Sen had complained of a stiff back and got ruled out. Further, the likes of Ravindra Jadeja, Jasprit Bumrah, Md Shami, etc., are also on the road to recovery after their respective injuries. Thus, there are several injury concerns in the Indian camp.

Speaking in this regard, Rohit said at the post-match presentation after the 2nd ODI, "I mean there are definitely a few injury concerns. We need to try and get to the bottom of it. I don't know what exactly it is. Maybe they're playing too much cricket. We need to try and monitor those guys, because it's important to understand when they come for India, they need to be a 100%, in fact more than 100%."

Hitman added, "It's something we have to look at. We have to sit with our team back home at the NCA as well and try and monitor their workload. That is something we need to look at. We can't afford guys coming in here half-fit and representing the country. There's huge pride and honour in representing the country and if they're not fit enough, it's not ideal. Having said that, we just need to get to the bottom of it and find out what exactly is the reason behind this."

Rohit was lauded for his efforts as the 35-year-old came out to bat, at No. 9, with the visitors needing 65 off the last 44 balls with only three wickets in hand. His valiant knock, 28-ball 51 not out, wasn't enough as India lost the second and penultimate tie to lose their second successive 50-over series on Bangladeshi soil.

Players need to be more than 100%: Rohit Sharma on plethora of injury concerns in Team India

India went down to Bangladesh in the second and penultimate ODI on Wednesday, (December 07), to lose the series 2-0 with one game to go. After losing the series opener by a wicket, many expected Rohit Sharma & Co. to level the series at the Shere Bangla Stadium in Dhaka. Nothing of that sort happened as the Men in Blue lost by five runs in pursuit of 272 target. Being asked to bowl first, India had reduced the Bangla Tigers to 69-6 before Mahmudullah's 77 and Mehedi Hasan's 100 not out propelled Bangladesh to 271/7 as India, in return, only managed 266 for 9.

While India lost the plot during Mahmudullah-Mehedi's rock solid 148-run seventh-wicket stand, they were kept alive in the run-chase courtesy of Shreyas Iyer (82) and Axar Patel (56)'s 107-run fifth-wicket partnership after being reduced to 65/4 at one stage. After the duo's departure, an unfit Rohit Sharma walked out to bat at No. 9. The Indian captain had injured his webbing while fielding at the slips in the second over of the match and left the field. After suffering a dislocation on his thumb and some stitches, the Hitman came out to bat for India with 65 needed off 44 balls, with only three wickets in hand.

Rohit started off slowly but accelerated and hit some amazing sixes (five overall) to smash a 28-ball 51 not out but couldn't take India past the finish line. Despite bringing down the equation to 6 off the last ball, Mustafizur Rahman's well-executed yorker prevented Rohit from going big. The 35-year-old's gutsy knock has been hailed by many given how unfit he was to bat. During his knock, Rohit completed 500 international sixes -- most by an Indian -- to join Chris Gayle in an elite list.

Most sixes in Intl Cricket

553- Chris Gayle
502 - Rohit Sharma*
476 - Shahid Afridi
398 - Brendon McCullum

Thus, Gayle and Rohit are the only two batters with 500-plus sixes at the international level.

At the post-match presentation, Rohit said, "It (thumb injury) isn't too great. Some dislocation and some stitches. Fortunately, not a fracture and so, I was able to bat. When you lose a game, there are positives and negatives. From being 69/6, allowing them to get to 270-odd wasn't a great effect from our bowlers. We started well but the middle overs and the back end is what's hurting us a lot. Happened in the last game as well. It's something we need to work on. Not taking anything away from Mehidy and Mahmudullah, was a great partnership but we also need to find ways of breaking such partnerships. In One-Day cricket, it's about partnerships and when you get those, you have to ensure that they are converted to match-winning partnerships. That's what they did. If you get those 70-run stands, you need to convert them into 110-120 run partnerships for the team to win games, as it isn't easy for the new batter. Need to be braver in the middle."

Rohit is ruled out of the ODI series and doubts remain over his participation in the two-match Test series versus the Bangla Tigers, which commences on December 14.

India's biggest six-hitter! Rohit Sharma completes 500 int'l sixes during valiant knock vs Bangladesh

On Wednesday (December 07), Virat Kohli opened the innings for Team India for the first time in ODI cricket since 2014 during the second and penultimate tie between India and Bangladesh in Dhaka. After opting to bat first, Liton Das-led Bangla Tigers were 69 for 6 and managed to post 271/7 riding on 100 not out from Mehedi Hasan, last match's Player-of-the-Match, and Mahmadullah's 77 as India came out for the run-chase with a new opening pair in the form of makeshift opener Kohli-Shikhar Dhawan. Captain Rohit Sharma got injured and was rushed to the hospital for scans while fielding in the slip cordon during the initial overs of the match.

Hence, Kohli opened the innings with Dhawan but couldn't do anything extra ordinary in a must-win game for Team India. Against a well-executed short-pitched delivery, the 34-year-old went for the pull, off Ebadot Hossain, and chopped it on to the stumps to depart for a 6-ball five. Here's the video of the former Indian captain's dismissal which sent Bangladeshi fans into a frenzy in the stadium:

Talking about Rohit's injury, he was stationed at second slip when he missed a regulation catch, giving opener Anamul Haque a lifeline off Md Siraj, and went off the field by injuring his webbling. On Wednesday (December 07), Rohit Sharma suffered an injury blow while fielding in the slip cordon in the second and penultimate ODI between Bangladesh and India in Dhaka. After losing the toss, India were asked to bowl first. In the second over of the innings, Mohammed Siraj induced an edge off Anamul Haque's willow as the catch went to captain Rohit at second slip, who dropped a sitter. As soon as he dropped the catch, the Hitman was seen in pain and quickly walked off the field.

The home side, who won the series opener by one wicket, have not got off to a good start and lost half of their side at the score of 69 with the likes of Siraj, Umran Malik and Washington Sundar striking at regular intervals. The visitors will aim to dismiss the Bangla Tigers for anything less than 200 and chase down the score to level the series.

BAN vs IND, 2nd ODI: Rohit taken to the hospital for scans after injuring his webbing while fielding at slips

India lost the three-match ODI series opener versus hosts Bangladesh, in Dhaka, by one wicket after being bundled out for 186. As Shakib Al Hasan rattled the famed Indian batting line-up, on a tough track, with a fine 5 for 36, India bowlers produced a top show but couldn't get rid of the last-wicket stand between Player-of-the-Match Mehedi Hasan (38 not out) and Mustafizur Rahman as the duo took their side home with four overs to spare.

From India's perspective, KL Rahul top-scored with a fine 70-ball 73 whereas in-form batter Shreyas Iyer struck 24 (39) along with Rohit Sharma and Washington Sundar also getting starts. Before the second and penultimate ODI, Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has a word of advise for Rahul and Iyer, who have been very good in ODI cricket of late. Gavaskar feels both have done well but cannot afford to relax with all-rounder Hardik Pandya's return in the format inevitable.

Speaking to Sony Sports, Gavaskar said, "When you have someone breathing down your neck, like KL Rahul will feel Shreyas Iyer is breathing down his neck which is again good for Rahul because he would want to go out there not taking any match lightly. He would want to score in every game. And both of them are outstanding fielders and KL Rahul can keep wickets which is a huge plus. Iyer can also bowl. So it is good to have these kind of competitions for No. 5 and 6 not to forget that there is a certain Hardik Pandya who is also likely to comeback in the one-day side sooner than later."

With the ODI World Cup due to be held in India in less than a year, the Rohit Sharma-led Indian team is tinkering with their team combination in a bid to finalise their XI. Rahul, the vice-captain and part-time keeper, Iyer and Hardik will certainly be one of the key players for the two-time winners whereas Rishabh Pant also cannot be ruled out, who slammed his maiden ODI ton in India's famous series win over hosts England in July 2022.

Thus, India are spoiled for choices and need to smartly finalise their playing XI for the mega event next year.

BAN vs IND 2022: Gavaskar warns Rahul, Iyer to not get complacent with Hardik's likely return in ODIs

England impressed one and all with their bazball method in the entire Rawalpindi Test to beat Pakistan by 74 runs on Day 5 of the three-match series opener on Monday (December 05). Opting to bat first on an unimpressive track, with nothing for bowlers, England rode on four centuries -- from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope and Harry Brooks -- to post 657 all-out in 101 overs.

In reply, Pakistan made 579 all-out with centuries from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and captain Babar Azam. With a 78-run lead, England batters once again impressed and went all-out in their approach to post 264-7 in 35.5 overs, at over seven runs per over, to set up a challenging 343-run target. On Day 5, Pakistan were 259-5 but got dismissed for 268. Post the Test match, many have hailed Ben Stokes & Co. for their bazball method which lit up the Test, played on a dead wicket.

Nonetheless, ex-English cricketer David Lloyd feels that England's approach isn't new. He recalled the great teams such as West Indies and Australia which were aggressive and never played for a draw. Lloyd further mentioned that only India can play a similar brand of cricket in whites, despite their batters being obsessed with numbers, due to Virat Kohli. "It is not totally new, of course. The Australian team of the 90s were very positive and the great West Indian sides were full of exhilarating stroke-makers. I reckon a team capable of this style now is India. They have all the tools. There has been a suspicion that Indian batters are stats driven but Virat Kohli is one who could drive this," wrote Lloyd in the Daily Mail.

It is to be noted that Kohli remains India's greatest Test captain ever. He led India from 2015 to 2022 and infused a competitive and attacking mindset where the team didn't only rely on spinners but formed a lethal pace-bowling attack and went for results rather than settling for draws. Under Kohli, India beat Australia in the 2018/19 Border-Gavaskar Trophy in Australia, had an unassailable 2-1 lead over hosts England in the 2021 series (which ended in a 2-2 stalemate with Jasprit Bumrah leading in the final match), were highly competitive versus South Africa in their own den in 2018 and 2022 tours and remained a dominant force at home.

India also played the inaugural ICC World Test Championship final under Kohli's leadership and remained No. 1 ranked side in the format for a long time. At present, Rohit is India's full-time captain after Kohli's resignation early this year.

'Virat Kohli is one who could drive this': David Lloyd claims only India can follow England's bazball method

In a run-feast in Rawalpindi, England beat Pakistan by 74 runs to win the first Test and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series. On Day 5, all three results were possible but Ben Stokes & Co. were rewarded for their brave and attacking approach as they beat Babar Azam & Co. in the riveting final moments of the contest.

Opting to bat first, England rode on centuries from Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, OIlie Pope and Harry Brooks to be dismissed for 657 (in 101 overs) in their first innings. In reply, Pakistan also made a mammoth 579, courtesy of hundreds from Imam-ul-Haq, Abdullah Shafique and Babar, but gave a vital 78-run lead to the visitors who smashed 264/7 in 35.5 overs and declared; setting up a challenging 343-run target.

On the final day, Pakistan were 259 for 5 are seemed like cruising towards the total before James Anderson-Ollie Robinson's four wickets each and Jack Leach chipped in with the last wicket to take their side home; dismissing Pakistan for 268. With this defeat, Pakistan have dented their chances of qualifying for the second ICC World Test Championship final.

Here's how Pakistan's loss is India's gain

Babar & Co. aren't out of contention yet. They are placed fifth in the table, however, wins for Australia or India in their respective upcoming Test series will end Pakistan's chances of entering the final.

On the other hand, if Rohit Sharma's India clean sweep Bangladesh, they can now afford to lose at least one of their upcoming four Tests versus Pat Cummins-led Australia at home, early next year, in a bid to qualify. For Australia, if they whitewash West Indies on home soil and beat South Africa in two out of the upcoming three Tests, Down Under, they would also make it to the summit clash.

After the loss, Babar said at the post-match presentation, "We were not upto the mark. Had a golden chance in the second innings, but session by session we lost wickets. Our bowling group is young. Unfortunately Haris injured himself in the first innings. All credit to the bowlers who bowled well and tried without Haris. We try to stick to our plans. Difficult when opponent goes at 7 an over. We had an opportunity in the second innings. But we didn't get partnerships in the end. Lot of positives. Our batting performed very well. Bowling also very well."

Pakistan will also host New Zealand after the England series. However, they have spoiled their chances of going ahead with a loss in the England series opener.

EXPLAINED: How Pakistan's 74-run loss vs England is a gain for India with WTC final ticket at stake

After the disappointment endured in the T20 World Cup, Team India has now started preparations for the 2023 ODI World Cup. After the T20 WC, regular captain Rohit Sharma missed the New Zealand tour whereas head coach Rahul Dravid was also rested. Thus, Shikhar Dhawan led in the ODIs whereas Hardik Pandya took charge of the T20I side.

Since the T20 WC debacle, many have spoken about the need for split captaincy with too much cricket being played. Moreover, there have been talks about having different coaches for different formats. England already have Brendon McCullum as their Test coach whereas Matthew Mott serves as the white-ball coach. In this regard, former Indian cricketer Hemang Badani feels such a change is surely on the cards in the Indian team.

Badani told Times Now, "I am of the opinion that both will happen in time for sure and it should happen. The skillset that a coach is required to have for different formats is not the same. The way you handle a T20 side to the way you handle and prepare for an ODI, or for Test format, is a lot different. I am all for that to happen in the future. Be it captaincy, be it coaching."

Dravid took over as the Indian team head coach after Ravi Shastri post the 2021 T20 WC in the UAE. Under Rohit and him, India have been pretty average. While they have dominated at home, beating New Zealand, West Indies, Sri Lanka, Australia and South Africa, they failed to win a Test series in SA, beat England in a one-off Test in Edgbaston, failed to qualify for the Asia Cup final and bowed out of the T20 WC semi-finals.

With India playing cricket across formats, till the 2023 ODI WC, there might be some big decisions on the way with split captaincy and coaching taking over the current setup.

Split captaincy, split coaching will happen for Team India, predicts former Indian cricketer

Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes returned for Team India as they faced Bangladesh in the three-match ODI series opener on Sunday (December 04) in Dhaka. Being asked to bat first, India were soon reduced to 49 for 3 and only managed a paltry 186 all-out in 41.2 overs with only vice-captain Rahul managing a sedate 73 (70).

Shakib Al Hasan accounted for 5 for 36 but the Bangla Tigers were made to sweat hard for their runs in the second innings. They were 95 for 3 and 128 for 4 but suddenly got reduced to 136 for 9 before an unbeaten 51-run tenth wicket stand with Player-of-the-Match Mehedi Hasan (38 not out and 1/43) and Mustafizur Rahman (11-ball 10*) took their side home by one wicket. After going down 1-0 in the series, former stumper and ex-selector Saba Karim lashed out at India and issued a warning. He feels an entire restructuring is needed in white-ball formats.

Speaking on Sony Sports after India's defeat, Karim said, "It is now time for us to pay attention to our white-ball cricket. The first thing is you will have to decide that our white-ball cricket has some issues which need to be resolved and for that, I feel you need an entire restructuring."

Karim opined, "This is being discussed for many days, if you have agreed that there is a problem, how will you address it? Do we need to bring a change in our game plan or our brand of cricket? Do we need to play with a different template? If we have to play like that, do we have the players like that or not?."

The former keeper-batter further pointed out, "If you feel you have the players like that, are we creating an environment like that so that they can bat freely, if we have decided that we have to bat aggressively. I feel we are still in doubt what path we need to take and on top of that if we get a challenging wicket like today, we get stuck even more."

"You will have to create different profiles for players and empower them that if you have to play aggressive cricket, this has to be your approach, then you cannot go the other way, whichever way the game might be going. You will have to continue to bat dominantly if you have decided that is going to be your template," Karim added.

India will aim for a series-levelling win in the second and penultimate ODI versus the Bangla Tigers, which will be held on Wednesday (December 07) at the same venue in Dhaka.

Ruturaj Gaikwad has been on a roll. On Friday (December 02), the Chennai Super Kings (CSK) opener continued his merry run in the ongoing Vijay Hazare Trophy by slamming an impressive 108 in the tournament finale. At the iconic Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad, Ruturaj slammed his third successive ton in the season during his side Maharashtra's face-off versus Saurashtra in the final.

Earlier, Gaikwad had scored a majestic 149-ball 220 not out in the quarter-final and went on to slam a 126-ball 168 in the semi-finals. While Gaikwad isn't part of India's forthcoming tour of Bangladesh, the right-hander is making the right noise and creating havoc in the domestic arena which certainly isn't going unnoticed. He will surely get a chance soon going by his amazing numbers recently.

After Team India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, there were strong rumours of significant changes set to take place in the T20I line-up. With the national side set to focus on the 2023 ODI World Cup and with the second cycle of ICC World Test Championship also going on, many senior players will now shift their focus on the longer formats and reportedly Hardik Pandya is set to take charge of the T20I side.

As per a report in the PTI, BCCI is likely to give the T20I captaincy to Hardik Pandya for a longer duration with the senior players, such as Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and the likes, set to focus on ODIs and Tests. It added that while the board won't push any senior player towards retirement from T20Is, a fresh team is likely to be given to Hardik.

"The BCCI never asks anyone to retire. It is an individual decision. But yes, with just a handful of T20Is scheduled in 2023, most of the seniors will concentrate on ODIs and Test matches in that cycle," a BCCI source told PTI on conditions of anonymity.

"You don't need to announce retirement if you don't want to. You will not see most of the seniors playing T20 next year," the source added. Thus, this can mean the end of the road for Rohit, Kohli in the shortest format.

Hardik Pandya set to be India's new T20I captain with Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli not in BCCI's plans: Report

After losing the first ODI by seven wickets, Shikhar Dhawan-led Team India couldn't level the three-match series versus hosts Kane Williamson's New Zealand, on Sunday (November 27), due to persistent rain in Hamilton. Thus, India will now aim to end the series with a 1-1 scoreline to sign off a rain-marred tour without losing the T20Is (won 1-0) and ODIs. The third and final ODI between the two heavyweights will take place on Wednesday morning (November 30).

India played Deepak Chahar instead of Shardul Thakur and roped in Deepak Hooda by dropping Sanju Samson in the second and penultimate ODI. Given India cannot play with only five bowlers, they added an extra bowling option in the second encounter. It seems they will go ahead with the same line-up, which will once again be harsh on Samson but seems inevitable. For NZ, they went ahead with Michael Bracewell -- in place of Adam Milne -- and it will be interesting to see if they back him or go back to Adam Milne. Given India's inexperience in the bowling department, Kiwis will start as favourites in the third and final ODI.

After the three T20Is, the action moved to the three-match ODI series between India and hosts New Zealand. In the ODI series opener, held at Eden Park, Auckland, on Friday (November 25), the Black Caps rode on a splendid 145 not out from Tom Latham and captain Kane Williamson's steady 94 not out to chase down India's 306/7 and take a 1-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Williamson & Co. had to struggle to get past Shikhar Dhawan-Shubman Gill. The opening pair added an impressive 124-run first-wicket stand before Lockie Ferguson removed Gill for 50 whereas stand-in captain Shikhar Dhawan fell for a 77-ball 72 off Tim Southee. Shreyas Iyer then stitched a vital wicket with Sanju Samson (a run-a-ball 36) after Ferguson removed Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav by bowling some hard lengths on a small ground. Iyer-Samson's 94-run fifth-wicket partnership took India closer to the 300-run mark before Washington Sundar's rapid cameo (16-ball 37*) took India to 306/7. Iyer top-scored with a calculative 76-ball 80.

In the run-chase, NZ started well before Finn Allen, Devon Conway and Daryl Mitchell fell to leave hosts reeling at 88 for 3. Umran Malik, debuting in the format, impressed in his early overs before Latham took on every Indian bowler. India went with only five bowlers and paid the price after Latham-Willianson's partnership stretched further.

While the NZ skipper played a composed knock, Latham smashed Shardul Thakur, Arshdeep Singh, Yuzvendra Chahal as the Kiwis chased down a par-score in Auckland. The duo stitched a record 221-run fourth-wicket stand to go past the finish line.

After winning the three T20Is 1-0, India will lock horns with hosts New Zealand in the first of the three-match ODI series on Friday (November 25). Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the side whereas Rishabh Pant will continue to don the deputy's hat, as he did in the T20Is with Hardik Pandya leading, as India will kick off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations. Ahead of the series, a lot has been said and written about Pant, who hasn't impressed in the T20Is after limited opportunities in the T20 World Cup in Australia.

Thus, former Indian all-rounder Reetinder Singh Sodhi has made a big claim. The ex-cricketer feels Pant has been given a lot of opportunities in the limited-overs format but he is yet to deliver. While he did slam his maiden ODI hundred in the series win over hosts England in mid-July this year, he continues to remain unimpressive in the shortest format. In the NZ T20Is, he was given an opportunity to open the innings where he returned with 11 and 13, from five balls respectively. Hence, Sodhi feels it is time to try someone like Sanju Samson, who warmed the bench in the T20I series, as Pant has become a 'liability'.

"He (Pant) is becoming a liability for Team India. If it’s like this, then bring in Sanju Samson. End of the day, you got to take that chance because you cannot afford to lose and exit in World Cup or ICC tournaments," Sodhi was quoted as saying by India News. "When you give too many chances, problems arise. The time has come to provide opportunities to new guys." "Only time will tell how many opportunities and how long he gets. Time is passing and he really has to tighten his shoes. Everything has a limit. You cannot depend on one player for so long. If he is not performing, you got to show him the exit door," Sodhi added.

As per Sodhi, Pant remains a match-winner, but hasn't lived up to his tag and, hence, the selectors should take a call and look beyond him "We all know Rishabh Pant is a match-winner, but you don’t score runs. You don’t help your team win. You got the opportunity in an important event like the World Cup. I accept that initially he didn’t get the opportunity, but whenever you get a chance, your job is to perform, which has not happened. It’s time that selectors think beyond him." he concluded.

Shikhar Dhawan will take charge of the side whereas Rishabh Pant will continue to don the deputy's hat, as he did in the T20Is with Hardik Pandya leading, as India will kick off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations.

Also read: Injured Ravindra Jadeja ruled out as BCCI make changes to 17-man ODI squad for Bangladesh series As per Sodhi, Pant remains a match-winner, but hasn't lived up to his tag and, hence, the selectors should take a call and look beyond him "We all know Rishabh Pant is a match-winner, but you don’t score runs. You don’t help your team win. You got the opportunity in an important event like the World Cup. I accept that initially he didn’t get the opportunity, but whenever you get a chance, your job is to perform, which has not happened. It’s time that selectors think beyond him." he concluded. IND vs NZ ODIs: Rishabh Pant is becoming a liability for Team India, says former Indian all-rounder

The third and final T20I between India and New Zealand ended in a tie after both sides ended with the same runs at DLS par score on Tuesday evening (November 22). This became only the third instance of a T20I being tied on DLS par score as Hardik Pandya & Co. were adjudged the winners of the bilateral series with a 1-0 scoreline. While the series opener was washed out entirely, India had beaten the Kiwis by 65 runs in the second and penultimate match.

Talking about the final T20I, in Napier, Tim Southee-led Kiwis opted to bat first. While Arshdeep Singh removed Finn Allen and Md Siraj dismissed Mark Chapman, Devon Conway's 59 and Glenn Phillips' 54 revived the NZ innings and they were set to get anything over 180. The last five overs saw the home side add only 31 runs and lose eight wickets as they were dismissed for a moderate 160 in 19.3 overs.

From India's perspective, Md Siraj was impressive with his hard lengths whereas Arshdeep also complemented him as the duo shared four scalps each and bundled the Kiwis for a par score. In reply, India lost their power hitters Ishan Kishan and Rishabh Pant in a flash. Shreyas Iyer was dismissed for a golden duck whereas in-form Suryakumar Yadav departed for a 10-ball 13.

Hardik's 18-ball 30 not out ensured India managed to reach the DLS par score at the time of rain interruption in Napier, with India 75-4 in nine overs. The match was evenly poised but rain had the final say as it ended in a tie with the visitors winning the series 1-0.

At the post-match presentation, Player-of-the-Match Siraj, who returned with his best T20I figures (4 for 17), said, "The wicket wasn't easy to bat and I was prepared to bowl hard lengths which gave me the rewards. I prepared myself to bowl hard lengths and had so much practice during World Cup and I just executed my plans. I always keep it simple. Just bowl the hard lengths. The weather is not in our hands, happy with the series win."
