India are gearing up for the third and final T20I versus New Zealand, to be held at the Narendra Modi Cricket Stadium, Ahmedabad on Wednesday (February 01). Ahead of the series finale, with the scoreline being 1-1, former Indian spinner and captain Anil Kumble lavished praise on some young Indian players and mentioned two future superstars.

Having worked closely with pacer Arshdeep Singh, during his sting as Punjab Kings' (PBKS) coach, Kumble lauded the left-arm seamer and reckoned he has a bright future. In his limited international appearances, Arshdeep has taken 39 T20I wickets in 25 matches and was part of Rohit Sharma-led India's Asia Cup and T20 World Cup campaigns.

"Having worked closely with someone like Arshdeep, it’s wonderful to see him grow into what he’s done for India. I would look at Arshdeep as the next superstar bowler coming through," said Kumble on JioCinema.

Among the young batters, India have abundance of talents in the form of Shubman Gill, Ishan Kishan, Prithvi Shaw, Rahul Tripathi and the likes. Kumble, however, picked ODI double centurion Ishan as a superstar in the making. "From a batting perspective, Ishan Kishan is someone who’s been wonderful in the opportunities he’s got. He got a double hundred and he’s someone who I think will be a superstar," Kumble asserted.

Meanwhile, former Indian stumper Parthiv Patel mentioned two different names. "He's (Umran) quick and bowling well and already played for India. He’s someone who can be a superstar. Batting-wise, having seen Tilak Varma in the last couple of years, I had the opportunity to scout him and see the cricketer he has become. We’ve seen his batting ability, and he has the ability to go on and lead the side. He’s someone who comes across as a leader."

IND vs NZ: Arshdeep, Gill, Shaw or Ishan? Anil Kumble names two future superstars of Team India

MS Dhoni achieved almost everything in his glittering cricketing career. Having debuted in late 2004, he became a household name very soon and led India from 2007 to 2016. Under him, India won all major ICC titles and even attained the No. 1 spot in Tests. He himself made the right noise, ending with 17,266 runs, 108 half-centuries, 16 tons, 634 catches, 359 sixes and 195 stumpings.

During the 2019 ICC ODI World Cup, in England and Wales, many believed that it was Dhoni's last international event. After Virat Kohli-led India's semi-final exit, the keeper-batter surprised one and all by not announcing his retirement and took a sabbatical for the rest of the year. In early 2020, Covid-19 pandemic struck the world and when IPL was set to kickoff in September-October, in the UAE, Dhoni stepped aside from international cricket on August 15.

R Sridhar, India's former fielding coach, revealed an unheard story about Dhoni's retirement. He revealed that the legendary cricketer had dropped a massive retirement hint while in conversation with Rishabh Pant ahead of the reserve day's play between India and New Zealand in the first semi-final of CWC'19.

"I can now reveal that at the time of the interview to the BCCI, which I attended from Antigua, I was reasonably certain that for all practical purposes, MS had played his last match for the country. He hadn't announced it, of course, but I will tell you why I knew. On the morning of the reserve day in our World Cup semifinal against New Zealand in Manchester, I was the first person at the breakfast hall. I was nursing my coffee when MS and Rishabh walked in, picked up their stuff and joined me at my table," Sridhar wrote as he shared the incident in his book, ‘Coaching Beyond- My days with the Indian cricket team’

Sridhar further added, "New Zealand had only a couple of overs to bat out and we'd start our innings thereafter, so the match would end reasonably early. Rishabh told MS in Hindi, 'Bhaiyya, some of the guys are planning to leave for London today itself privately. Would you be interested?' MS replied, 'No, Rishabh, I don't want to miss my last bus drive with the team.'"

The former fielding coach revealed that he never narrated the incident to anyone due to the 'sheer respect' for Dhoni. "I didn't say a word to anyone about this conversation out of sheer respect for the man. He had taken me into confidence. I couldn't shoot my mouth off. So, I didn't utter a word not to Ravi, not to Arun, not even to my wife," concluded Sridhar.

Dhoni will next be seen in action during IPL 2023 where he will lead the Chennai Super Kings (CSK).

'No, Rishabh, I don't want to...': R Sridhar narrates unheard story about MS Dhoni's retirement

India defeated Sri Lanka by 67 runs in the first ODI, in Guwahati, to go 1-0 up in the three-match series on Tuesday (January 10). Ahead of the second and penultimate ODI, at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, former Indian skipper Mohammad Azharuddin has slammed KL Rahul for not being consistent and finding different ways to get out.

In the ODI series opener, India rode on skipper Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 113 not out to post 373/7. Later, India defended the total by restricting Sri Lanka to 306 for 8, to win by 67 runs. Talking about Rahul, he donned the wicketkeeping gloves and made a 29-ball 39. Just when he was looking set, he departed after being cleaned up by pacer Kasun Rajitha.

Thus, Azhar told PTI, "I think Rahul is getting out in a lot of manners. Primarily, it is not the good balls that are getting him out. It is poor shot selection first up that is causing problems," said Azhar, who further added that the Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) skipper should work with the coaches to rectify his batting flaws.

"I think consistency is the problem in KL Rahul's case. But I think there are coaches who should rectify his flaws. In my opinion, he is a good player but consistency is missing in his game," Azharuddin was quoted as saying by the news agency.

Rahul, the former vice-captain, will need to pull up his socks given Ishan Kishan -- who scored a double ton in his last ODI -- is waiting in the wings. The stylish right-hander will be hungry for some big knocks in the remaining SL ODIs.

'Poor shot selection is causing problems': Azhar slams India batter for 'getting out in a lot of manners'

Rohit Sharma-led India have locked horns with Sri Lanka in the second and penultimate ODI on Thursday (January 12), at the iconic Eden Gardens, Kolkata. At the coin toss, Dasun Shanaka once again called it right as the Islanders have opted to bat first in a bid to level the series after losing the opener by 67 runs in Guwahati.

As India will hope to restrict the Lankans for a low total, captain Rohit will also aim to surpass AB de Villiers in an elite list. Rohit needs 41 runs to surpass De Villiers in the list of most runs in men's ODIs. At present, Hitman has 9,537 runs in 236 matches, including three double tons. He averages 48.90 with a strike rate of 89.64.

De Villiers, who announced a shocking international retirement in May 2018, ended his stellar run in ODIs with 9,577 runs at 53.50 and a strike rate of 101.09. Not only de Villiers, Rohit can also overtake Adam Gilchrist in this list. He needs 83 runs to move past the former keeper-batter's run-tally (9,619). Given Rohit loves batting at the Eden Gardens, Kolkata, expect him to come out all guns blazing in the second innings.

After losing the toss, Rohit said, "I was in two minds. Wanted to bat first because of how we played last time, but looking at this ground, I wanted to field. Overall, improvements are as a team, nothing in particular. What we've done in the past is in the past, we need to look ahead and keep doing better. I love playing here, the crowd is also energetic and that motivates me always. But it is in the past, I need to start fresh. One enforced change for us, Chahal in the last game put in a dive and hasn't recovered well today, so Kuldeep Yadav comes in."

IND vs SL: Rohit Sharma 41 runs away to surpass AB de Villiers in elite list in 2nd ODI

India faced Sri Lanka in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (January 10) in Guwahati. Being asked to bat first, India rode on captain Rohit Sharma's 83, Shubman Gill's 70 and Virat Kohli's 87-ball 113 to post a mammoth 373 for 7 and later defended the total with Sri Lanka managing 306 for 8 in their full quota of overs. Thus, India kicked off their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations in style with an easy 67-run win as former captain Kohli set the platform with his 45th ton in the format, 73rd overall.

Kohli came out to bat, at No. 3, with India well-placed courtesy an impressive 143-run opening stand between Rohit and Gill. Kohli stitched handy stands with Shreyas Iyer (28) and KL Rahul (39) to slam an impressive ton. His inning was a mixture of finding the boundaries and running hard between wickets but the former skipper wasn't pleased with vice-captain Hardik Pandya turning down a run during their 27-run fifth-wicket stand. The incident took place in the 43rd over when Kohli and Hardik completed a run but the former was keen to sneak in another single. Just then, he looked at Hardik and tried to persuade him but the vice-captain refused and turned down the chance to complete a double. Kohli wasn't impressed with Hardik and gave him a stare. WATCH: Virat Kohli stares at Hardik Pandya after he turns down second run in 1st ODI vs Sri Lanka

Since India's ten-wicket loss at the hands of eventual winners England in the T20 World Cup semi-finals last year, the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul haven't played the shortest format. In the limited matches that India have played following the T20 WC debacle, Hardik Pandya has led the young side as the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is keen on rebuilding the side with new faces. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka ODIs, in Guwahati on Tuesday (January 10), captain Rohit stated that he has not given up on the format just yet.

As Kohli and Rohit have expressed their avaliability for T20Is, it has been reported that the BCCI might ask them to reconsider their future in the format. As reported by the Indian Express, the matter is set to be discussed by the selection panel in the next few days when the committee meets to announce the squads for the New Zealand white-ball series at home.

With 2023 being looked upon as an important year for the senior men's team, with the World Test Championship (WTC) final and ODI World Cup to be held later this year, the Indian senior players have been told to focus on the longer formats. With the need of the hour to assemble a young squad and adopt a more fearless approach in T20Is, the board is keen to rebuild the team under Hardik Pandya and give him enough time before the 2024 T20 World Cup. Hence, a clarity will be needed about the future of Rohit and Kohli in the format.

Ahead of the India-SL first ODI, in Guwahati, skipper Rohit addressed the pre-match press conference and spoke at length about his T20I future. "At the moment I think it was made clear in the past that it's a 50-over World Cup year for us. And for some of the guys, it's not possible to play all formats. If you look at the schedule, there were back-to-back matches, so we decided to just look at some players' workload that we wanted to make sure that they get enough break time and manage them. I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format," Rohit said ahead of the ODI series opener.

I definitely fall in that as well. We have three T20Is against New Zealand. We will see what happens after IPL. I have not decided to give up the format," Rohit said ahead of the ODI series opener.

End of the road? BCCI to ask Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli to rethink their T20I future - Report

After Virat Kohli's 45th ODI ton propelled India to a mammoth 373 for 7 in the first ODI versus Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (January 10), Umran Malik made heads turn with his raw pace during SL's run-chase. Coming onto bowl after Md Siraj's early blows dented the Islanders, Malik recorded the fastest delivery bowled by an Indian in international cricket as he clocked 156 kph. Since his memorable run in IPL 2022, the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) speedster has been grabbing eyeballs with some serious pace and once again made heads turn during the ODI series opener, in Guwahati.

Umran's feat was confirmed by SRH's Twitter handle.

SERIOUS PACE! Umran Malik breaks own record, bowls fastest ball by an Indian during IND-SL 1st ODI

Virat Kohli commenced 2023 in style. With India being asked to bat first in the three-match ODI series opener versus Sri Lanka, on Tuesday (January 10), Kohli banked on a great start provided by Rohit Sharma (83) and Shubman Gill (70) to score a magnificent 87-ball 113 and take the home side to a mammoth 373 for 7 in 50 overs. With his 73rd international ton, 45th in the ODI format, Kohli broke a plethora of records and has begun the new calendar year in style as Rohit & Co. have commenced their ODI World Cup preparations.

Ahead of the ODI series opener, former Indian batter Sanjay Manjrekar pinned his hopes on Kohli to return to his 'original heights' in the World Cup year. Speaking to Star Sports, Manjrekar pointed out that Kohli will get back to his best and play to his strengths, by knocking the ball around and rotating the strike, in the 50-over format.

"It's 2023, it's a 50-overs World Cup year. The 50-overs format is brilliant for people who want to get into form. Guys who are short on confidence. It's going to be great for Rohit Sharma. 50-overs cricket is right down his lane, he is already an all-time great. The 50-overs format suits him the most," Manjrekar said. He further asserted, "In 50 overs format, 65 percent of the runs that are scored are in ones and twos, and Virat Kohli loves getting his runs through ones and twos. This will take the pressure off. T20Is, he feels the pressure of going after the bowling. This might just be a brilliant year for Virat Kohli to come back to his original heights."

Manjrekar mentioned that it is not fair to say Kohli underwent a lean patch in ODIs, although he slammed his first ton in the format after 2019 during the third and final tie in Bangladesh, in early December. The former cricketer stated that the former skipper contributed with useful knocks and will be more consistent as the year progresses. "See, he has got those innings. Let's be fair. Even when the hundreds haven't come, he has scored runs, he has been in form. We have said multiple times in the last two years that he has been in form. But, the form doesn't carry on. After a hundred, the next two-three innings are not big scores. That's what we are waiting for. This format will allow him. It will give time for Virat Kohli to be the consistent player that he was known as," he added.

Kohli has surely lived upto Manjrekar's expectations with an impressive knock in the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka in Guwahati on Tuesday. Being asked to bat first, India ended on 373 for 7 and will aim for a big win over the Islanders to go 1-0 up in the series.

Virat Kohli might return to his original heights in World Cup year: Sanjay Manjrekar pins hopes on ODI great

Virat Kohli scored his first ODI ton during the third and final match versus Bangladesh, in early December, after August 2019. He has now started 2023 with a brilliant ton as India have locked horns with Sri Lanka, one of Kohli's favourite opponents, in the three-match ODI series opener on Tuesday (January 10) in Guwahati. With his 73rd international ton, 45th in the format, he has moved past Sachin Tendulkar to have the most tons in India-SL ODIs (nine), equalled with the Master Blaster with an equal number of centuries at home (20) and also became the fastest to 12,500 international runs (242nd innings).

He stitched valuable stands with Shreyas Iyer (40-run stand) and KL Rahul (adding 90 runs for the fourth-wicket) to lead India's charge. Eventually, India managed a mammoth 373 for 7 in 50 overs and will aim to wrap up the proceedings with a big win.

IND vs SL: Virat Kohli moves past Sachin Tendulkar, breaks plethora of records during his 73rd ton in 1st ODI

Ahead of the first ODI between India and Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening (January 10), captain Rohit Sharma confirmed that Shubman Gill will continue to be persisted as his opening partner, with no room for Ishan Kishan. Kishan had replaced an injured Rohit in the third and inconsequential ODI versus Bangladesh, in early December, and made the most of his opportunity to score a double ton. Many believed that Kishan had done enough to cement his spot as an opener, with Shikhar Dhawan dropped, but the Indian team management want to persist with Shubman.

Speaking on his opening partner, Rohit said in the pre-match presser on Monday (January 09), "Both openers (Gill and Kishan) have done really well. But looking at how both have gone through, I think it is fair that we give Gill a chance to have a fair run because in the last games Gill got a lot of runs as well. I am not going to take anything from Ishan. He has been wonderful for us. He got a double hundred and I know what it takes to get a double hundred, it is a great achievement. But just to be honest and be fair to the guys who have done really well before that we need to give those guys enough chances as well."

Rohit added on Kishan, "It is unfortunate that we won't be able to play Ishan but looking at how things have panned out for us in the last 8-9 months, looking at how the ODIs have gone through for us, it is fair to give Gill that run and he has done extremely well in that position. We will definitely try out and keep Ishan in the mix and see how things pan out for us as we play lot of games ahead." In Gill's defence, he has been among runs in the West Indies, Zimbabwe and New Zealand tour but wasn't part of the Indian squad for the Bangladesh series, with the return of the key players. Hence, when Kishan was in the squad and scored a double ton when he got a chance in the playing XI, many believed he would pip Gill to open versus SL.

Thus, former Indian pacer Venkatesh Prasad reacted to Kishan's omission. He tweeted, replying to a cricket portal's post, and wrote, "Think fair would have been to give chance to a man who scored a double hundred in India’s last ODI, and in a series where India lost two games and the series. Have all the time in the world for Gill, but no way you drop a player for scoring a double ton."

In the ongoing first ODI between India and SL, Rohit & Co. lost the toss and were opted to bat first. Rohit and Gill stitched an impressive 143-run first-wicket stand with the youngster returning with a sublime 60-ball 73, studded with 11 fours. For him to cement his place as the second opener, Gill has been consistent but will hope to score some daddy hundreds.

For Kishan, he will surely feel unlucky to have missed out despite scoring the fourth double ton by an Indian in ODIs. However, India have a lot of white-ball cricket to play en route the IPL 2023 edition. Hence, he will aim to once again make the most of his opportunities.

'No way you...': Former Indian speedster blasts Rahul Dravid-Rohit Sharma for dropping Ishan Kishan

Team India is now gearing up for the three-match ODI series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on Tuesday (January 10). It is an important year for the senior men's cricket team with the ODI World Cup set to be held later this year, in India. The last time India hosted the mega event, along with Sri Lanka and Bangladesh, they went on to lift the coveted trophy in 2011. This time around, they will solely host the tournament -- for the first time ever -- and look to break their ten-year-long ICC-title-drought.

Ahead of India's first 50-over assignment in 2023, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir -- who was part of MS Dhoni-led India's 2011 ODI WC triumph -- has a stern message for World Cup-bound players. With India missing key players in last few World Cups due to injuries, as a result of playing frequently, many missed games in the run-up to an ICC event. Thus, Gambhir feels the key players have to play 50-over format and prioritise it this year with the WC just few months away. In addition, he suggested that Indian players can skip IPL matches, if need be, to remain fit.

“If the franchise (IPL) has to suffer then they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder. Not the IPL. IPL is the byproduct. So, if India goes on to win the World Cup then this is the big occasion. So if an important player does miss the IPL, so be it. IPL happens every year, World Cup happens every four years,” the two-time World Cup winner Gambhir said while speaking on Star Sports’ show Road to Glory.

“If people who are playing all three formats want to take a break, then they can take a break from T20Is. But surely not from the ODI format," Gambhir mentioned.

Gambhir further asserted that players who feature in all three formats can take a break from T20Is but should be available for ODIs with a lot at stake in the format this year. “If people who are playing all three formats want to take a break, then they can take a break from T20Is. 'Indian cricket is main stakeholder, IPL is just...': Gambhir's message as Team India prepare for ODI WC

A lot has been said and written about Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli's T20I future following the T20 World Cup, which took place last year in Australia. Following India's ten-wicket defeat at the hands of eventual winners England in the semi-finals, many thought it was the end of the road for Rohit and Kohli, two of India's finest batters, in the shortest format of the game. While nothing official has been annonunced, it seems the BCCI selectors have started to move on from the two senior pros as they are believed to shift their focus solely on this year's ODI World Cup, in India, whereas India have relied on Hardik Pandya to lead a young and inexperienced T20I team since the T20 WC debacle.

With Hardik being touted as the next T20I captain, also the next white-ball skipper after Rohit, and BCCI selectors relying on young guns for the shortest format, there is uncertainity regarding Rohit and Kohli's future in the format. Ahead of the India-Sri Lanka ODIs, which gets underway on Tuesday (January 10), Karim told News Sports, "I feel there is no need to pick them currently. Yes, they can be considered if they do well in the IPL,” said Karim. He added, “There is a chance that Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma will have a fantastic IPL season. If that happens, the selectors will not be able to look beyond them. The same happened in Dinesh Karthik's case last year."

Ahead of the SL ODIs, captain Rohit has confirmed that he hasn't given up on the T20I format. It will be interesting to see if the selectors consider bringing back the senior duo in the upcoming series or after IPL 2023. Given that India have started preparations for the ODI WC, to be held in India in October-November, Rohit and Kohli have shifted their focus on the 50-over format.

'No need to....' Former Indian stumper opines on Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli's T20I future

India will kick off their ODI World Cup preparations, to be held later this year in India, with the three-match ODI series versus Sri Lanka. The series gets underway on Tuesday (January 10) with the first ODI set to be held at the Barsapara Cricket Stadium, Guwahati. With the commencement of the series, India will see the return of their big players such as regular captain Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and KL Rahul whereas Hardik Pandya, who captained in the SL T20Is, will also be playing his first T20I after July 2022.

Ahead of the series opener, King Kohli will aim to match Sachin Tendulkar's elite feat. Master Blaster had a stellar international career and ended with several records. The legendary cricketer holds the record for most ODI hundreds at home, with 20 in 164 matches. Kohli, on the other hand, follows suit in the list with 19 tons in just 101 matches. However, his last home triple-figure knock in the format came in March 2019 against Australia. Kohli, who scored a century the last time he played an ODI for India (in the Bangladesh series in December 2022), will equal Tendulkar with most ODI hundreds on home soil if he touches the 100-run mark in the SL series opener.

IND vs SL, 1st ODI: Virat Kohli eyes Sachin Tendulkar's elite feat in series opener in Guwahati

On Saturday (January 07), Hardik Pandya-led India thrashed Dasun Shanaka's Sri Lanka by 91 runs in the third and final T20I at the Saurashtra Cricket Stadium, Rajkot. Opting to bat first, with the series tied at 1-1, India rode on yet another brilliant innings from Suryakumar Yadav, who slammed his third ton in the format in less than six months, to post 228 for 5. In reply, India dismissed the Lankans for a paltry 137 to lose by 91 runs.

Surya came out to bat at No. 4 and laced 7 fours and 9 sixes at a whopping strike rate of 219.61. After the knock, he is being hailed by many former cricketers for the sheer consistency he has shown in the shortest format of the game. Since his debut, the right-hander has dominated the format and already has scored three tons, in less than six months, and remains the No. 1 ranked batter as well. Thus, former Pakistan spinner Danish Kaneria heaped praise on SKY and termed him as the 'new Universe Boss'; a term referred for Chris Gayle.

In a video posted on his Youtube channel, Kaneria said, “The new Universe Boss is Suryakumar Yadav-the beast. Now what can I tell about this lad, even before I have said that a player like Suryakumar comes once in a lifetime. The innings which he played today, scoring 112 off 51, no one can replicate that. You can speak about ABD, Chris Gayle but even these two look pale in front of Surya. He has already eclipsed them and has taken T20 cricket to a whole new level."

"If this bloke is on song, there is no bowler in world cricket to stop him. Chris Gayle was there, AB de Villiers was there but they are past now. No one even comes close to Suryakumar," the former Pakistan spinner added.

After taking India to a 2-1 series win over Sri Lanka, Surya was adjudged the Player-of-the-Series. At the post-match presentation, SKY said, "It's really important to put pressure on yourself when you are preparing for a game. If you do that in practice, it gets a little easier while playing the game. There is a lot of hard work involved but it's about doing quality practice sessions. You should know what your game is and prepare accordingly. Boundaries behind are like 50-60 meters, so I was targeting them. There are some shots that are pre-determined but you need to have other shots too so that if the bowler changes his plan, you can have an answer. He (Dravid) just lets me enjoy myself. The new Universe Boss is Suryakumar Yadav: Former Pakistan spinner hails Indian star batter after SL T20Is

Suryakumar Yadav is having the time of his life. In 2022, he ended with 1,164 runs in T20Is -- 168 more than second-highest run-getter Md Rizwan (996). He has started 2023 with a bang, scoring his third ton in the shortest format during the India-Sri Lanka T20Is. He is the No. 1 ranked batter in T20Is, is in the scheme of things for India with regard to their 2023 ODI World Cup preparations whereas some former cricketers also want him to be part of the red-ball side.

Surya's rise has been remarkable given he made his international debut at the age of 31. Being hailed by many for his consistency for Mumbai Indians (MI) in the IPL, the right-hander finally managed to enter the Indian playing XI in February 2021. Since then, he has dominated world cricket -- especially in the shortest format. Recently, former Pakistan captain Salman Butt opined on SKY and made a bold claim that he would not have been successful if he was playing for Pakistan. Butt referred to a reported policy by the Ramiz Raja-led Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) of not letting 30-plus aged players make their international debut.

Butt said on his Youtube channel, "I was reading everywhere that he came to international cricket when he was over 30. I just thought, he's lucky that he is Indian. If he was in Pakistan, he would've been a victim to the over-30 policy. Those who are in team, they are fine. Those who aren't in the team, they don't have a chance. Suryakumar broke into the team when he was 30. So, his case is different."

Coming out to bat at No. 4, SKY stitched a mammoth 111-run-third-wicket stand with Shubman Gill (46) and entertained the fans with his strokeplay and ability to hit in all parts of the ground to return with a breathtaking 51-ball 112 not out, laced with 7 fours and 9 sixes at a whopping strike rate of 219.61. Courtesy of SKY's brilliance, India posted 228 for 5 and beat the Islanders by 91 runs to win the series 2-1.

'If he was in Pakistan, he would've...' - Former Pakistan captain's BOLD remark on Suryakumar Yadav

After missing the series opener due to illness, Arshdeep Singh was named in India's XI for the second and penultimate T20I versus Sri Lanka, in Pune, on Thursday (January 05). The 23-year-old left-armer had a forgettable outing, returning with 2-0-37-0 including five no-balls (three on the trot). Thus, Arshdeep has now bowled the joint most no-balls by any bowler in the format from a Full Member team and most by an Indian.

Indian bowlers, in general, were expensive and off the mark as they conceded 12 extras (four wides and seven no-balls) as Sri Lanka rode on Kusal Mendis' 52 and Dasun Shanaka's 22-ball 56 to post 206 for 7 after being asked to bat first. In reply, India were 57 for 5 before Suryakumar Yadav's 51, Axar Patel's 31-ball 65* and Shivam Mavi's 15-ball 26 brought the hosts back before they fell short by 16 runs. After the game, lots of fingers have been pointed at Arshdeep. Little Master Sunil Gavaskar has now schooled the young pacer and said 'not bowling a no-ball is definitely in the bowler's control'.

"As a professional, you can't be doing this. We often hear today's players say, things aren't in our control. Not bowling no ball is in your control. What happens after you deliver the ball, what the batsman does, is another thing. Not bowling a no ball is definitely in your control," Gavaskar said during his commentary stint on Star Sports.

Meanwhile, head coach Rahul Dravid called for patience and defended Arshdeep despite his horror showing. Dravid told in the post-match conference, "Nobody wants to bowl wides (no-balls) in any format. Especially in T20s, they can hurt you. We need to be patient with lot of these young kids. There are a lot of youngsters playing in this team, especially our bowling attack. They are young kids; they will have games like these at times. We all need to be patient with them and understanding. Of course, they are working hard, and we keep trying to help them, support them technically, and also just create the right environment for them to be able to get the best out of their skills."

Hardik Pandya's India started 2023 with a bang by defeating Sri Lanka by two runs in the first T20I of the three-match series, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai, on Tuesday (January 03). Hardik & Co. were asked to bat first and rode on Ishan Kishan's 37, Deepak Hooda's 41* and Axar Patel's 31* to post 162-5. In reply, Shivam Mavi's 4 for 22 and Umran Malik's 2 for 27 led to SL being all-out for 160 on the final ball to lose by two runs.

Ahead of the second and penultimate tie, to be held in Pune on Thursday (January 05), former Indian stumper and selector Saba Karim has shared words of wisdom for new captain Hardik.

Speaking to India News, Karim pointed out, "I think he needs to focus on his attitude. Everyone likes him as a player because of his attitude. As a captain, if you show a lot of emotions on the field, players will get fearful. I don’t think that’s the right thing for a team to grow. You have to trust your players."

Karim further opined, "I liked two things about captain Hardik Pandya. He said that he wanted to bat regardless of the toss. It means he knows the challenges ahead; bilateral matches are aside, but you have to learn something in every match and put your team in a tough situation."

“The second thing is that debutant Shivam Mavi bowled in the powerplay. It means that, as a captain, he wants to lead by example,” added the former cricketer.

India and Sri Lanka will lock horns in the second and penultimate T20I on Thursday evening as the hosts will be eager to wrap up the series in style. Hardik, who hasn't been named as the official full-time T20I skipper, will be desperate to make a mark as a leader -- with strong rumours of him being looked upon as the future white-ball captain -- and take India to a series win.

Hardik himself had a decent outing in the Mumbai game, scoring 29 runs and returning with 3-0-12-0 with the ball.

You have to trust your players." Karim further opined, "I liked two things about captain Hardik Pandya. He said that he wanted to bat regardless of the toss. It means he knows the challenges ahead; bilateral matches are aside, but you have to learn something in every match and put your team in a tough situation." Also read: 'Biggest mistake India made in last two World Cups...' - Gautam Gambhir points out glaring issue “The second thing is that debutant Shivam Mavi bowled in the powerplay.

After India's T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, the focus has now shifted to the ICC ODI World Cup 2023, which will be held in India later this year. Thus, Team India's ICC-title drought continues. The last ICC title they won came in 2013 when they lifted the Champions Trophy under MS Dhoni. Since then, the Men in Blue appeared in three ICC finals and ended as semi-finalists on four occasions. Nonetheless, a title triumph continues to evade them.

As the preparations have begun for the ODI World Cup, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has pointed out a glaring issue that has resulted in India's failures in the last two World Cups.

"They got to play together. I think the biggest mistake that Indian cricket has made in the last two World Cups has been that these guys have not played enough cricket together. Tell me, how many times have we got the best playing 11 in the park? We haven't; only during the World Cup we decided to have the best playing 11, but unfortunately, that was never the best playing 11. So, these guys have to play enough of white ball cricket, especially for the 50 overs World Cup together irrespective of whether they want to take a break from the T20 or from the IPL," Gambhir said on Star Sports show.

In addition, Gambhir -- the T20 WC and ODI WC medallist -- stated that if any player wants to take a rest, they can skip a few matches in the shortest format or even the IPL but play the ODIs.

Gambhir added, "If they want to take a break, people who play more than three formats, they can definitely take a break from T20 cricket, but surely not from the ODI format. If the franchisee has to suffer, they have to suffer. Indian cricket is the main stakeholder, not the IPL. IPL is just a by-product. So, if India goes out and wins the World Cup, that is the bigger ovation, that is the bigger ring. For example, if an important player does miss the IPL games so be it because IPL happens every year and the World Cup happens only once in four years. So, for me, I think winning the World Cup is far more important than winning the IPL."

Rohit Sharma-led Indian ODI team will commence their preparations for the World Cup with a home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 10. They will look for a winning start in what is a crucial year for Team India.

'Biggest mistake India made in last two World Cups...' - Gautam Gambhir points out glaring issue

2023 is an important year for Team India. After the T20 World Cup 2022 debacle, where they were hammered in the semi-finals, India will now look to end their nine-year-long-ICC-title-drought in 2023 with a chance at the mega title in the forthcoming WTC final (where India haven't confirmed a slot yet) and ODI World Cup, to be hosted by India later this year.

India, under Hardik Pandya, started 2023 with a thrilling two-run win over Sri Lanka on Tuesday (January 03) in the series opener of the three-match T20Is. Hardik has always been a valuable all-rounder for India, especially in white-ball formats, and taken over as the T20I captain in Rohit Sharma's absence. He has not been officially named as the T20I skipper but is being touted to be the next white-ball captain after Rohit. For the upcoming home SL ODIs, Hardik even replaced KL Rahul as the new vice-captain. Thus, with his stoks rising, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir has urged India to find Hardik's like-for-like replacement as they will be in 'serious trouble' if something happens to the 29-year-old.

Gambhir opined that India need to rope in a backup for Hardik in the white-ball setup. "They need to quickly identify a backup for Hardik; if something happens to him, India will be in serious, serious trouble," Gambhir told Star Sports.

India have the likes of Shardul Thakur, Venkatesh Iyer, etc. who can fill in for Hardik as fast-bowling all-rounders but will hope for the star player to remain fit with some big ICC events lined-up.

Gambhir, the T20 WC and ODI WC medallist, also spoke at length on the workload management issue. He believes India's key players will have to prioritise playing ODIs with the World Cup to be held in India later this year. "This year [the core group should be focusing on] ODIs for sure. 'They'll be in serious trouble if something happens to him': Gambhir urges India to find star player's backup

After an ordinary run in 2022, Team India kicked off their run in 2023 with a narrow win over Sri Lanka in the first T20I of their three-match series on home soil. The year 2023 is an important one for the national side with the WTC final, in June, and the ODI World Cup later this year. It will be hosted entirely by India and Rohit Sharma & Co. have lots to do if they wish to win the ODI WC and end their nine-year-long ICC-title drought.

With the commencement of 2023, BCCI held a review meeting with head coach Rahul Dravid, captain Rohit and NCA chief VVS Laxman to discuss the road ahead for Team India and review last year's T20 World Cup debacle. As per reports, 20 players have been shortlisted for the marquee event and their fitness and progress will be closely monitored by the BCCI and team management in the run-up to the ODI WC. Amid all this, former Indian opener Gautam Gambhir has backed Rohit and Virat Kohli to come good and believes they can anchor the innings as they play spin really well. Gambhir feels Rohit and Kohli will play a 'massive role' in the upcoming WC.

"I feel people like Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and all those guys who can anchor their innings, who probably can play spin really well will play a massive role the coming World Cup," said Gambhir, while speaking on Star Sports show 'Road to World Cup Glory'. He also asked the team management to identify players who can fit into the template they are looking to form for the big event. "First, you need to identify the players who got that fearless approach and probably in a format like 50 overs you need to have a mixture of every kind of player. There are players who can anchor their innings. Change in role has also made a huge difference. During that time we had only one new ball, now we have got two new balls with five fielders inside.

"So, the role of a part timer has gone out of the window. The reverse swings, you don't see enough of reverse swings anymore, you don't see enough of chase for the finger spinners as well. But, I always feel that when we talk about this new approach, which India always talks about, the template and stuff, you have got to identify players who can adapt those roles or that template very easily," Gambhir asserted.

Gambhir added that if some players cannot adapt to the new template, there is no point in trying to fit them into the side. "Some people just cannot adapt to that template so why push them to play in a certain way which doesn't come naturally to them. So, for me, I think identifying players and at the same time getting the right mix is very important, rather than thinking that we have to play at a certain template so we got to select all the 15 with a similar mind-set or with a similar template," he added.

It is believed that Rohit, Kohli and few others will not play a lot of T20Is this year and shift their focus entirely on the ODI WC. The upcoming 50-over showpiece event can be Rohit and Kohli's last international appearance and the duo will be desperare to sign off on a high.

Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma will play massive role: Gambhir pins hopes on senior pros for 2023 ODI World Cup

India's ODI World Cup-winning captain Kapil Dev doesn't shy away from expressing his views on several aspects pertaining to Indian cricket. As India have shifted their focus towards the 2023 ODI World Cup, to be hosted entirely by the country later this year, Kapil made a bold claim saying that if the team is dependent on Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and 2-3 other players to win the title, the dream of winning the mega event won't be fulfilled.

Speaking to ABP News, Kapil pointed out that though India have the quality to win the ODI WC, they need to start looking beyond Kohli and Rohit and have at least 5-6 match-winners. He opined, "If you want to win the World Cup, the coach, selectors, and team management will have to make some tough decisions. Personal interests will have to take a backseat and they will need to think about the team. Aap Virat pe, Rohit pe ya 2-3 players pe bharosa karenge ki woh hume World Cup jeetayenge toh aisa kabhi bhi nahi ho sakta (If you think Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma and 2-3 players will win us the World Cup then that's never going to happen). You should believe in your team. Do we have such a team? Definitely. Do we have certain match winners? Yes, of course! We have players who can win the World Cup."

You need players who fulfill each of their responsibilities. The youngsters will need to come forward and say 'it is our time'."

Rishabh Pant accident

Recently, Kapil also reacted to Rishabh Pant's freak car accident, on December 30 on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. In this regard, he said, "This is a learning. When I was still an up-and-coming cricketer, I faced a motorcycle accident. From that day onwards, my brother didn't even let me touch the motorbike. I'm just thankful to god that Rishabh Pant is safe. Yes, you have a good-looking car with great speeds but you have to be careful. You can easily afford a driver, you don't have to drive it alone." He added, "I understand that one has hobbies or even passion for such things, it's natural to have it at his age, but you also have responsibilities. Only you can take care of yourself. You have to decide things for yourself."

Pant, on Monday (January 02), came out of the ICU at Max hospital, Dehradun as the keeper-batter is fighting hard to recover fully following his serious accident.

'Can't depend on Kohli, Rohit to win us ODI WC, we need...': Ex-India captain Kapil Dev's BOLD remark

On Tuesday (January 03), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) added Jasprit Bumrah to India's ODI squad for their forthcoming home series versus Sri Lanka. Thus, the premier pacer returns to the national side after a long time following his back injury in September. Due to a stress fracture in his lower back, Bumrah was out of the T20 World Cup and even missed the Asia Cup. He was ruled out of India's remaining assignments following the T20 WC and wasn't named in the initial ODI squad, for the SL series, before being added on Tuesday.

After being ruled out in the second half of 2022, Bumrah had been rehabilitating at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru since then. Here's India's revised squad following Bumrah's inclusion:

India's squad for Sri Lanka ODIs: Rohit Sharma (capt), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Suryakumar Yadav, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul (wk), Ishan Kishan (wk), Hardik Pandya (vc), Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Kuldeep Yadav, Axar Patel, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohd. Shami, Mohd. Siraj, Umran Malik, Arshdeep Singh.

Hardik Pandya continues to be the vice-captain in the ODI squad despite Bumrah's addition. While the 28-year-old pacer has returned, there is no update on all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja. The 34-year-old star player had sustained a knee injury during the Asia Cup and has been out of action since then.

Before the three ODIs versus the Lankans, which commences on January 10, Hardik will lead an inexperienced Indian T20I line-up in the three-match series versus the Asian champions Sri Lanka, starting on Tuesday evening. The series opener will be held at the iconic Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

Jasprit Bumrah returns from injury, pacer named in India squad for Sri Lanka ODIs

Kuldeep Yadav had a good outing in 2022. It was the year of revival for the wrist spinner following his successful run in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 edition. After being released from the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in late 2021, he was bought by the Delhi Capitals (DC) and played all games for the franchise in last year's edition, returning with 21 wickets (fifth-most overall). While he is still not a regular across formats for Team India, his run for DC surely grabbed eyeballs as the 28-year-old has seen his stocks go down following IPL 2019.

During IPL 2019-2021, Kuldeep was part of KKR (his first-ever franchise) but only played a handful of games. He featured in only 14 games in 2019 and 2020 before entirely missing the 2021 season. While he was not in the best of form as well, many criticised KKR for their treatment towards the star spinner. Back then, Karthik was the KKR captain when Kuldeep became out of favour. Recently, the veteran keeper-batter praised Kuldeep -- following his recent five-fer in the India-Bangladesh Tests -- but the spinner's coach has slammed DK and the Kolkata franchise for dropping him.

Speaking to Sportskeeda, Kuldeep's coach Kapil Pandey said, "When he was with Kolkata and Karthik was the captain, he used to give him just 1-2 overs each game. Now he says that Kuldeep is his favourite Indian bowler. "Favorite tha to usko khilaaya kyu nahi? Usko khilaate? (If he was your favourite, then why didn't you play him?) But that’s okay, that’s past now and I believe the future will be great for Kuldeep."

Further, Kapil lauded DC's team management for backing Kuldeep's talent in IPL 2022. "He used to be badly neglected in Kolkata, but it has been the complete opposite in Delhi. Rishabh Pant, Ricky Ponting, Shane Watson and others have backed and supported him and that really helped him play freely "Ponting told him that he will play all games, and when you hear this as a bowler, your morale gets boosted. Rishabh also backed him in all situations and so he deserves a lot of praise for Kuldeep’s comeback," he added.

'If he was your favourite bowler....?': Kuldeep Yadav's coach slams Dinesh Karthik, KKR for dropping him

On Friday (December 30), Rishabh Pant was involved in a serious car accident on the Delhi-Dehradun highway. While he is now at the ICU at the Max Hospital, Dehradun, the 25-year-old is getting provided with the best medical help possible and is en route to recovery. He suffered several injuries due to the freak car accident but is believed to be out of danger and is safe.

Many former and active cricketers, celebrities from other fields and even Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi have reacted to Pant's accident and prayed for his speedy recovery and return to the 22-yard cricket strip. Kapil Dev, India's 1983 World Cup-winning skipper, also joined the bandwagon and thanked god for Pant being safe. He, however, shared valuable advice for the youngster. Kapil feels Pant should hire a driver and not drive himself, to avoid such horrific accidents and a plethora of injuries.

Speaking to ABP News, Kapil said, "This is a learning.

Meanwhile, the medical team monitoring Pant's progress shared an important update. The medical team member told TOI, "It is important that Rishabh gets sufficient time to rest, not just physically but mentally too. He is still in pain due to the injuries sustained in the accident. He has to speak to visitors, which drains his energy that should be preserved for faster recovery. People planning to visit him should avoid it for now and let him rest.

With Pant being a big name, the problem of frequent visits have kept the hospital authorities on their toes. "Hospital visiting hours are from 11am to 1pm and 4pm to 5pm and only one visitor can meet a patient at any given time. Rishabh Pant’s case is a high-profile one due to which more visitors are streaming in and hence this problem,” another staff member added.

As per reports, Pant is out of cricketing action for the first half of 2023, at least, which will see him miss the India-Australia Tests and IPL 2023.

'I understand one has hobbies but...' Kapil Dev reacts to Rishabh Pant's accident, gives a valuable advice

Last week, the BCCI selection committee announced India's white-ball squads for the home T20Is versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 03 in Mumbai. Hardik Pandya was named the T20I captain whereas regular skipper Rohit Sharma will return from a thumb injury to take charge of the ODI line-up versus the Lankans. While nothing has been revealed whether Hardik is set to become the next T20I captain, it is believed that the official announcement will follow suit sometime later this year (with seniors focused on 2023 ODI World Cup). Moreover, he is also being touted as Rohit's successor in limited-overs. He is also named as the ODI vice-captain despite KL Rahul's presence (who held onto the post for a year until the recent squad announcement).

Hardik has impressed many with his calm demeanour as captain -- especially during IPL 2022 for the eventual champions Gujarat Titans. As a result, he has led India on a few occasions last year. While talks are on with many supporting Hardik as a long-term captaincy option, former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan has pointed out a crucial factor which needs to be taken into consideration before promoting the 29-year-old all-rounder.

Speaking during an interaction on Star Sports, Pathan said, "The captaincy Hardik has done, whether it was for the Gujarat Titans in the IPL or at the start for India, I felt the communication was extremely good. He was seen as very agile." He added, "When there was talk about his captaincy, I was extremely impressed with his approach but along with that India will have to keep in mind that if you are making him the long-term captain, they will have to concentrate a lot on his fitness, whether you talk about him or the team management. It will be very crucial going ahead."

Hardik will lead a young T20I team when India take on Sri Lanka in the series opener on Tuesday (January 03) in Mumbai. It will be the start of a new era with many senior players not being part of the series. It will be interesting to see how Hardik manages himself and continues to perform the role of an all-rounder when leading the side (he bowled in excess of 30 overs and batted at No. 4 mostly during IPL 2022) as he continues to make rapid strides as a leader.

Rishabh Pant accident: He is stable and undergoing scans, confirms BCCI Secretary Jay Shah

Ishan Kishan ended 2022 with a bang by becoming only the fourth Indian -- seventh overall -- to slam an ODI double ton during the Indian tour of Bangladesh in December. Playing the third and inconsequential tie due to regular captain Rohit Sharma's thumb injury, the 24-year-old made the most of the opportunity and slammed a majestic 131-ball 210, laced with 24 fours and 10 sixes. Thus, Ishan made a big statement with India stepping into 2023, i.e. an ODI World Cup year with Men in Blue set to host the mega event.

Ahead of India's first international assignment in 2023, the BCCI selection committee -- under outgoing chief Chetan Sharma -- announced the national side's white-ball squads for their home series versus Sri Lanka, starting on January 03. While there was no mention of first-choice Rishabh Pant -- a first-choice keeper-batter across formats -- Kishan found his name in both the squads. With Shikhar Dhawan dropped, India still has quite a few batters who can accompany Rohit at the top. But, former Indian opener-turned-commentator Gautam Gambhir is crystal clear that Kishan deserves to partner Rohit in ODIs..

As quoted by Cricinfo, Gambhir said that the discussion about who should be Sharma's partner at the top should be over following Kishan's blitz. "I'm amazed we're discussing this, because someone's got a double-hundred in the previous innings," Gambhir pointed out when asked to name his choice on who should open with Rohit. "The discussion is over. It has to be Ishan Kishan. Someone who can get a double-hundred in those conditions against a reasonable attack - especially at [their] home - should play."

"He got what 200 by the 35th over mark? You can't look at anyone beyond Ishan Kishan. He has to be given a longer run. He can keep wickets as well, so he can do two jobs for you. So for me, that discussion shouldn't be there. If someone else had got a double-hundred, I think we would've gone gung-ho over that individual, but it's not the case with Ishan Kishan. Because we still continue to talk about other players. For me, that debate is over," he asserted.

Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. "It's very difficult to look beyond Rohit and Ishan Kishan to open the batting, Virat at three, Surya at four, [and] Shreyas at five, because he's been incredible in the last one-and-a-half years. Yes, he's had issues against the short ball, but he's been able to manage it. You can't be the best against everything but if you're able to manage it and got the numbers going for you, you can't look beyond Shreyas at No. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6."

India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10.

India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar.

Also read: 'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs Further, Gambhir mentioned his ideal India XI at this moment. 5 and Hardik [Pandya] at 6." India, under Hardik Pandya, will host SL in three T20Is -- from January 3 in Mumbai -- before the ODI series kicks off on January 10. India’s squad for Sri Lanka T20Is: Hardik Pandya (Captain), Ishan Kishan (wk), Ruturaj Gaikwad, Shubman Gill, Suryakumar Yadav (VC), Deepak Hooda, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Yuzvendra Chahal, Axar Patel, Arshdeep Singh, Harshal Patel, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, Mukesh Kumar. WC 2023: Hockey India announces prize money for Harmanpreet Singh-led team on podium finish

Just two days before India's first international assignment in 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is set to hold a review meeting to analyse India's T20 World Cup 2022 performance with regular captain Rohit Sharma, head coach Rahul Dravid and NCA chief VVS Laxman. The meeting, as per a report in India Today, will take place on January 01 in Mumbai.

The likes of Rohit, Dravid and even Laxman will be present as the board will have a review of India's dismal campaign in the 2022 edition of the T20 WC, held in Australia. Heading into the T20 WC as the No. 1 ranked T20I side, India had everything going for them as they topped their group with wins over Pakistan, Netherlands, Bangladesh and Zimbabwe, respectively, but lost to South Africa, by a close margin, before falling flat in the semi-finals versus eventual winners England (by ten wickets). India's orthodox approach with the bat and some ordinary fielding efforts -- especialy in the game versus the Proteas -- were criticised by many. Moreover, Yuzvendra Chahal wasn't given a single game which raised eyebrows.

Will some big decisions be taken post the BCCI review? Will it be split captaincy and split coaching for India? Only time will tell...

After the T20 WC, Indian team have tried to tweak their line-up and are aiming to build a new squad around Hardik Pandya. Hardik hasn't officially taken over as the T20I captain but many believe he is set to take over with senior players such as Rohit, Virat Kohli, etc. shifting their focus towards the 2023 ODI World Cup; likely to be their swansong from international cricket.

For the home T20Is versus SL, BCCI announced a fresh 16-man squad under Hardik. The likes of Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Ruturaj Gaikwad, Rahul Tripathi, Sanju Samson, Washington Sundar, Umran Malik, Shivam Mavi, etc. have been named in the squad sans Rohit, Kohli, KL Rahul, Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Ahead of SL series, BCCI to hold review meeting on Team India's T20 World Cup campaign: Report

On Tuesday (December 27), the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) announced India's T20I and ODI squad for their upcoming home series versus Sri Lanka, which gets underway on January 3. While some big names weren't part of the Hardik Pandya-led T20I squad, the ODI line-up feature Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, KL Rahul and the likes with no mention of Shikhar Dhawan, Rishabh Pant (due to a niggle on his knee) and Bhuvneshwar Kumar.

Moreover, all-rounder Hardik was also promoted as the ODI vice-captain despite Rahul's presence. Ever since Rohit took over, Rahul has been his deputy across formats but a string of low scores and Hardik's rise as a leader has resulted in the former losing out on his vice-captaincy post. In the Bangladesh Tests, Rahul had scores of 22, 23, 10, and 2. Even in the ODIs, he scored a majestic 73 in the series opener before not doing anything significant (scoring 14 and 8 respectively) in the last two games. Thus, he knows he has to remain consistent or will lose his ODI spot as well in a World Cup year, with the mega event to be held later in 2023 in India.

Ahead of the SL ODIs, which commences on January 10, former Indian opener and Rahul's IPL franchise Lucknow Super Giants' (LSG) mentor Gautam Gambhir shared his take on the right-hander's form. "You can only control what you can control. You can't control selectors, you can't control what's going to happen in the next series. You got three ODIs against Sri Lanka. If you play that, just be in the present. That's all you can control. The moment you start to think about uncontrollable things, you're putting undue pressure on yourself,” Gambhir said in Star Sports' A Chat with Champions.

Gambhir, the T20 and ODI World Cup medallist, further added, "If you don't perform, someone else will take your position. That's not only with Sanju or KL, it's with Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma as well. If they don't perform, you will start questioning about their positions too. That's what international cricket is about. No one is indispensable. So you got three ODIs, you bat in the middle-order, try and get those runs, because ultimately it's the performance that keeps you in the side. Not the name, not your talent."

'The moment you start...' - Gautam Gambhir shares his take on KL Rahul's struggles ahead of SL ODIs

A lot of changes have taken place in Pakistan cricket in recent times. Ramiz Raja, the former Pakistan captain, was recently sacked as the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB)'s chief with Najam Sethi taking over. Moreover, Shahid Afridi was named the interim chief selector with Abdul Razzaq and Rao Iftikhar Anjum joining him on the panel as well. In addition, a lot has been said about Babar Azam as a Test captain but he remains the full-time skipper as of now.

Ramiz's tenure came to a sudden end after Pakistan lost their first-ever Test series on home soil, with England drubbing them 3-0. A lot has been said and written about his stint as the PCB chief. Recently, Ramiz blasted Najam Sethi and criticised the functioning of the PCB and once again took a shot at Indian cricket while pointing out the achievements of the national side in his tenure.

“We gave outstanding performances in white-ball cricket. We played the Asia Cup final, India didn't play that. India, a billion-dollar industry, was left behind. Tod phod hui, unhone apna chief selector, selection committee fire kar di, captain badal diye, kyunki unko hazam nahi hua ki Pakistan unse kaise aage nikal gaya. (They fired their chief selector, selection committee, changed the captain because they couldn't digest how Pakistan went ahead of them),” Ramiz told Suno TV.

Further, Ramiz talked about being sacked as PCB chairman and said, “This is just like France firing their entire board even after they played in the FIFA World Cup final.”

The former Pakistan star also revealed that he empowered Babar Azam at all times and ensured his best performances as leader of the side. "I tried my level best to keep this team united. I empowered Babar Azam. Cricket is one of those rare sports where captaincy is relevant. If your captain is powerful, results will come, and we have given results,” Ramiz concluded.

At present, PCB has threatened legal action against Ramiz over his outbursts on his successor Najam Sethi. Thus, there is a lot happening in Pakistan cricket amid the national side's ongoing home Tests versus New Zealand.
