'Gangubai Kathiawadi' to 'Jersey': WION's list of best Hindi films of 2022 so far

Sports biopics usually have a set template. You have a protagonist who is gifted and talented from childhood. Someone sees a spark and nurtures that talent for a few years. The protagonist in his journey faces multiple hurdles, in form of rivalry, injury, and opposition from family but ultimately manages to outshine and prove his or her worth in the climax of the film. Srijit Mukherji's latest, Shabaash Mithu' follows the template to the tee. But does it leave a lasting, defining impression? Only in parts.

Based on former Indian Women's Cricket team captain Mithali Raj's life, 'Shabaash Mithu' pans out over 162 minutes and describes her early life, her induction into cricket, her influences in life and her rise in International cricket. The story is a familiar one- primarily because Raj is a celebrated name in sports in the country and also because the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup is still fresh in everyone's memory. A tournament in which Raj led as a captain for the Indian team and played stupendously well, compelling the country to sit up and take notice of the women's cricket team in India.

The moments that stand out in 'Shabaash Mithu'

When the story is all too familiar, the challenges multiply for a storyteller. Written by Priya Aven, the film's screenplay thrills in moments with the beginning being the most promising and poignant. It has Pannu as Raj standing in front of a few seated men, presumably officials of the cricket board, asking for a few basic rights for her and her team. The pompous official (Bajendra Kala) promptly calls a peon over to the conference room and asks him to name a few women cricketers as he gushes about the sport. The scene is abruptly cut short and the narrative then goes back in time to show how a young Mithali (played by Inayat Verma) was introduced to the game of cricket by her feisty, tom-boyish friend Noor. The two were Sachin and Kambli to each other and played cricket in a secret hideout every day after their Bharatnatyam practice. During one such game, cricket coach Sampath (Vijay Raaz) spots the two and their talent, convinces Raj's family and brings them under his tutelage.

The scenes of the two young girls, dressed in skirts and with flower adorning their braids, playing gleefully a game that mostly is played by young boys in gullies across the country are the most heartening scenes of the film. Beautifully written and well performed, they put an instant smile on one's face.

The other scene that stands out is the one where the Indian women's cricket team goes to appeal for basic amenities and jerseys of their names in front of a few officials at CAI (basically BCCI) and after being rebuked, they introduce themselves one by one by taking off the jerseys which do not have their name tags. It is a defining moment in the film and one that stays with you for a long time.

The performances in 'Shabaash Mithu'

Raj and her team fought for respect not only from the cricketing board but also from the entire nation. Certain scenes highlight how we perceived women cricketers vis-a-vis their male counterparts and how the women changed it to a great extent with their stupendous performance at the 2017 Women's Cricket World Cup.

While the film has such poignant moments- in totally it doesn't add up. Maybe because the film's lead actor, Taapsee Pannu has overexposed herself playing sports characters. This is Pannu's third sports film. She has played a hockey player and an athlete in the past- both the character arcs were similar and so in this film, there is a sense of Deja Vu when one sees Pannu donning a similar character who goes through similar trials in life.

There is also Momtaz Sorcar, who plays a character loosely based on cricketer Jhulan Goswami. Sorcar usually has a very strong screen presence but here her role is limited. Nevertheless, she manages to create an impression. The other actress who delivers is Shilpi Marwaha who plays Taapsee's competitor and senior in the team. Marwaha is understated in her performance as Sukumari Marwa and her scenes with Taapsee are special.

I found a major 'Chak De! India' hangover throughout the film. The film remains perhaps one of the best sports films in India and certain scenes in 'Shabaash Mithu' seem to be heavily inspired by Shimit Amin's film, especially the locker room scene where Taapsee delivers a pep talk to her teammates. The scene is supposed to give goosebumps to the audience or make them emotional, but due to lacklustre writing, falls flat.

What does not work in 'Shabaash Mithu'

When the template is already set, it is ultimately upon the makers how to make the predictable story engaging. One can dramatise it, or write a screenplay that provides impressive catchy dialogues or add plot points to make a story compelling, but 'Shabaash Mithu' remains a middling affair throughout.

Considering this is the first film on women's cricket and its stars, 'Shabaash Mithu' could have been a defining film and done wonders. It could have evoked a sense of curiosity among sports enthusiasts to look up and read more about the women cricketers of the country. Instead, the film leaves a middling effect on viewers, where the story, the performances and the climax of the film- all seem too predictable.

It is a well-intended film which tells an important story- but don't expect it to you give you an adrenaline rush that films of this genre usually give.

Taapsee Pannu's ‘Looop Lapeta’ gets a thumbs up from 'Run Lola Run' star Franka Potente

Filmmaker Akash Bhatia's film 'Looop Lapeta' featuring Taapsee Pannu and Tahir Raj Bhasin captures your attention from the word go. As Savi and Satya, Pannu and Bhasin take the viewers on a whirlwind chase that is fuelled by love and only love.

A remake of the 90s German cult classic 'Run Lola Run' by Tom Tywer, 'Looop Lapeta' breathes a fresh lease of life into a known story, giving its protagonist Savi, a former athlete, 80 minutes and three chances at saving her good-for-nothing boyfriend Satya and procure Rs 50 lac. In the original, the protagonist had 20 minutes.

But Bhatia along with co-writers Vinay Chhawal, Ketan Pedgaonkar, Aakash Batia, Arnav Vepa Nanduri give a very contemporary Indian spin to the story which is high on energy, quirks and performance making the 2 hr 11 minutes film feel like a breeze.

So what's the story about? Savi has 80 minutes to save her boyfriend Satya from being killed by his boss, a mobster called Victor (Dibyendu Bhattacharya) who had given him the task to get a bag full of Rs 50 lac in the said time. Satya being the careless, carefree man that he is- loses it on the way and calls his girlfriend Savi for help. As the couple run against time, Satya accidentally gets shot but Savi realises she has a few more chances to set things straight.

With a screenplay that gets the viewers engaged right from the first frame to the catchy background score and credible performances, there really isn't a single dull moment in 'Looop Lapeta'. It isn't easy to make a remake of a hit that has been loved and revered the world over but Bhatia and his team of writers manage to step up, create very interesting subplots with characters that can have their own separate stories to make the film thoroughly enjoyable.

There are two dimwitted brothers Gappu-Appu (Raghav Raj Kakker and Manik Papneja) who plan to rob their father's jewellery store- a place that Satya too plans to steal from. The confusion that ensues (not once but three times over) while the store is robbed, is one of the most well written and enacted portions of the film. There is also a Taxi driver, who crosses paths with Savi and who is heartbroken about his girlfriend getting married to someone else. Also adding more fun to the plot is a cop- who on his way to buy the fresh catch from the fish market, spots Savi running, gets suspicious and starts chasing her. Not just the lead pair, but Bhatia ensures all the characters have an intrinsic part to play in the loop and are so well fleshed out that you want to know more about them.

The performances are great. Taapsee Pannu, who has over a period of time proved that she alone can take a film forward, delivers a credible performance as Savi, an angsty former athlete who has several personal issues that need to be addressed. She may be running ( a lot) against time to save her boyfriend but the film beautifully uses the plot to make the character come to terms with her personal problems.

Tahir Raj Bhasin, easily the man of the moment on OTT space, is refreshing, goofy, charming - all wrapped into one. We all know slackers like Satya in real life and yet we all fall for their optimism and simplicity. Bhasin breathes in the right amount of charm into his character and its a delight to watch him on screen. He shares great onscreen chemistry with Pannu and the two support each other well throughout the film.

Actors Raghav Raj Kakker and Manik Papneja are equally charming as Gappu and Appu. I would love to see the two getting a spin-off. They were so effective in their parts, drawing in the laughs. So did Shreya Dhanwanthary and Samir Kevin Roy as lovers Julia and Jacob.

A story that is stuck in the loop can be repetitive, but with deft writing and direction, 'Looop Lapeta' draws you in and keeps you hooked throughout. It helps that the film uses a colourful palate and Yash Khanna's camera work ably supported by Priyank Prem Kumar's editing, makes the film a joy ride that draws you in the loop, much like its characters.

Watch 'Looop Lapeta' even if you have watched the original 'Run Lola Run' because its a clever remake that gives a reference not only to the original but also to the popular mythological Savitri Satyabhan story. It basically serves as a very engaging film wrapped in Indian sensibilities.

If you haven't watched the original, then be prepared to go on a fun ride with 'Looop Lapeta'.

The film is streaming on Netflix.

'Looop Lapeta' review: Taapsee Pannu, Tahir Raj Bhasin's film Indianizes the German original well

2021 saw Taapsee Pannu in two very different roles- one as a seductress in 'Haseen Dilruba' and the other as the wronged athlete seeking justice in 'Rashmi Rocket'. In the new year, Taapse's first outing will be in a quirky thriller 'Looop Lapeta' co-starring Tahir Raj Bhasin.
Taapsee Pannu’s 'Looop Lapeta' to release on Netflix in February

Sayani Gupta to Taapsee Pannu: Bollywood actresses with the busiest slate for 2022

The year threw forward some surprises as far as the actors were concerned. As Sushmita Sen told me, she unlearned all the overt acting skills to just “be” in front of the camera for 'Aarya'. Are our actors finally learning to just be themselves? Looks like it. Here are the actors who shone on the digital platform.

1. Kartik Aaryan in 'Dhamaka': Kartik Aaryan’s powerful performance holds the film together. His journey from a self-serving scumbag to a conscientious newshound is convincingly achieved by the young actor. This is his best performance to date and one that puts him ahead of all competition. I see Kartik winning all the best-actor awards this year. So far the digital platform has not been very kind to the Bollywood A-listers. Akshay Kumar floundered with' Laxmii', Varun and papa David Dhawan delivered the worst film of their career in 'Coolie No 1'. Salman Khan’s 'Radhe' was arguably the worst film of the superstar’s career. As for Anil Kapoor’s 'AK Versus AK', the less said the better. What is the “IT” factor that goes missing when Bollywood A-listers translocate their films from the big to the small screen? That lacuna in the genre will be filled by 'Dhamaka.'Director Ram Madhavani already had us gripped with the series 'Aarya' and that superb hijack drama 'Neerja'. He knows how to keep us on tenterhooks. While Kartik Aaryan will be the first Bollywood A-lister to break the barrier between Bollywood and the OTT, there are several A-listers like Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan, Hrithik Roshan and Ranbir Kapoor who have so far stayed away from the OTT platform. It is time for Bollywood’s superstars to get down from their high horses and adapt to the new home medium of entertainment. Don't give us arrogant self-centred I-me-myself films like 'Sadak 2' and 'Kali Peeli' on the OTT.

2. Jayasurya in 'Sunny': Jayasurya’s spectacular performance holds this one-man show together. He is so inured in the character’s dark desperate suicidal world(at one point, Sunny puts a piece of broken glass to his wrist, at another point he is about to jump off from the balcony of his fourth-floor hotel suite) that we become unconditionally invested in his desolation for a little more than 90 minutes. Not that Sunny is likeable or even remotely heroic. But his anguish is a throbbing entity, impossible to ignore. I’ve seen many actors do a one-man show: Sunil Dutt in 'Yaadein', Rajkummar Rao in 'Trapped' Tom Hanks in 'Castaway'. None of these actors has been able to capture the essence of isolation as effectively as Jayasurya. He takes us into Sunny’s wretched life—a broken marriage, a broken extra-marital affair, a lost job, debts owed to nasty people, a dead child—not in a ritualistic relay race of imposed drama created to build a sense of sympathy around the quarantined hero. As for Jayasurya, is he a better actor than his Malayali peer Fahadh Faasil? When Sunny finally breaks down at the end(out of relief, not despair) I was sobbing with him. This is not a performance. This is an embodiment of life’s essential truth where the adage ‘This Too Shall Pass’ acquires an entirely novel relevance.

3. Pawan Malhotra In 'Tabbar': Set in the curiously vivacious bustle of Jalandhar it has the extraordinary Pawan Malhotra as Omkar a petty entrepreneur and patriarch with a wife and two sons. One night, their lives go wrong and thus begins a distressing horrific downward spiral that can only go one way. Malhotra’s character makes it to the grade of a gender-reversed Mother India. Pawan Malhotra and Supriya Pathak bring nuances to their stereotypical roles(strong obdurate father, frail devoted mother) that are hard to pinpoint.

4. Kriti Sanon in 'Mimi': Kriti Sanon, in a role written to make her shine, plays an ambitious Rajasthani dancer who wants to be a Bollywood star, and has Ranveer Singh’s poster in her room. She also has Deepika and Kareena’s pictures on the wall just to remind herself that once she gets to Bollywood those divas are done with. The film has some interesting ideas on parenthood and the woman’s right to her womb. But the treatment gets progressively guillotined by excessive melodrama. However, Kriti’s feisty performance holds interest till the end.

5. Mita Vashisht In 'Your Honor 2': That’s what two brilliant actors can do to you. Every time Jimmy Sheirgill and Mita Vashisht are on screen together, you want to see just where their conversation is going. The words they speak seductively encircle their cat-and-mouse game in this energetic engrossing and altogether gripping tale of empowerment privilege and their misuse. Vashisht’s sly cop act furnishes a vinegary flavour to her conversations with the Judge in the dock. Vashisht plays the cop as a mixture of attentive and disdainful. I just couldn’t take my eyes off her stolen steely scornful glances at the guilty-as-sin Judge. The brilliant Mita Vashisht enters the plot in Episode 3 in Season 2. Once she does, the plot gathers some momentum.

6. Vijay Sethupathi in 'Nava Rasa'(Netflix): They say 'save the last for the best. But in this eclectic uneven omnibus of nine stories based on the nine basic human emotions, the best is the first story, Edhir, based on the emotion of pity (Karuna). It features two powerhouse performances by Vijay Sethupathi and Revathy as the murderer and his victim’s wife respectively. Their confrontation is so beautifully mapped that the entire film seems to have been plotted by director Bejoy Nambiar just to bring these two fabulous actors together. But no. There is more here. Edhir addresses itself to the question of the conscience and the power/ambiguity of forgiveness with such stupendous serenity -- it is a joy to behold the art of Bejoy. Sethupathi is a force of nature. With one twitch of his eyebrow, he can convey an ocean of conflicting emotions.

7. Fahadh Fasil in 'Jijo': In film after film, Fahadh proves himself a fearless peerless seamless actor who merges into his characters like water in a stream. And better still flows down that stream where the human condition merges with the very bedrock of existence. And look at where Fahadh has arrived in Joji! Shakespeare’s Macbeth gets the treatment which I am sure would make Shakespeare himself envious Joji is of course played by the great Fahad Faasil who brings to the character a kind of patriarchal bitterness that manifests itself in a not-expected burst of devastating violence. This is director Dileesh Pothan’s third directorial with Fahadh(after Maheshinte Prathikaaram and Thondimuthalum Driksakshiyum) and by far the most reflective, moody, sinister, subtle and sublime. Though Macbeth is an inherently violent tale of patricide and Oedipal guilt, Pothan’s film does away with the vileness of the protagonist’s deeds by introducing a kind of dithering juvenilia into Jijo’s character. His chosen weapon of violence is an airgun and his selected hideaway is a half-dug well. Fahadh’s Jijo is an unlikely villain and hence all the more devastating. He is also an unlikely Shakespearean hero who has in all probability never heard of Shakespeare.

8. Huma Qureshi In 'Maharani': Huma Qureshi’s transformation from Leila in Deepa Mehta’s 'Leila' searching for her lost daughter, to Rani the politician’s wife who searches for her own identity, is admirable. Here Huma creates a woman who is at once street-wise and parliament-foolish but possesses the moral wherewithal to tell right from wrong. The way she stands up against her husband in the dismissal of Prem Kumar, the Minister in-charge of the fodder resources, would get taalis in the movie theatre. If only wishes were horses, then Rabri Devi would be Margaret Thatcher. ‘Fodder’ record, the real Lalu Yadav was convicted in the 950 crore scam. In this thrill-stamped cleaned-out sweeping drama, all the guilt is shifted to the Minister while Rani Bharati runs an expose that transforms her into a neo-Joan Of Arc, a woman who cares deeply for the truth. Alas, we can’t say the same for the makers of this series who have spun a fabulously fake drama, transforming a rubberstamp wife to a self-willed righteous crusader-political. The dishonesty doesn’t make Maharani any less interesting. Ms Qureshi makes sure she elevates her character into some kind of a feminist firebrand without rendering Rani unbelievably noble. The woman in Rani Bharati surfaces in her scenes with her convalescing husband.

9. Siddharth Malhotra In 'Shershaah': Sidharth Malhotra plays real-life soldier Vikram Batra with sincerity and honesty that shine through in every frame. In every frame, he is Rajesh Khanna in Anand and Aradhana. You know he is going to be missed sorely once he’s gone. Malhotra plays Batra as unforgettable. Boyish, helpful, sincere and endearing. There is not a duplicitous bone in this soldier and lover-boy. The film allows the protagonist to fly freely.

10. Ahana Kumra in 'Call My Agent': Aahana Kumra, the fearless feisty firefighter of an actress doesn’t mind looking ridiculous if the need arises. Aahana plays Amaal, a kamaal ki lesbian with temper tantrums problems who more than meets her match in Jasleen(Anuschka Sawhney), a tax assessor with has the hots for Amaal. Their romance plays out like a rippling riff in a buxom musical refrain that is warm intimate relatable and sometimes sad.

11. Taapsee Pannu in 'Haseen Dillruba': Taapsee delivers yet another titillating tongue—and-taang-in-cheek performance, rendering Rani a slut hard to slot. It’s interesting to see how an avant-garde writer like Kanika Dhillon is pushing the Hindi Film Heroine over the edge. She can now crave for things like non-vegetarian food and satisfactory sex without being slut-shamed. It’s okay to be a slut now. Rani Tripathi, nee Kashyap, is the kind of hormonal heroine who gives the smalltown slut a bad name.

12. Vicky Kaushal in 'Sardar Udham': Kaushal can tell his children he got married to their mother during the same year that he gave his career’s best performance. Vicky Kaushal’s Udham Singh is a performance laced with grace, tinged with bitterness and defined by a dormant rage. When Kaushal says something as innocently pacifying as “Mere bahot saare British friends hain” he sounds as fringe-friendly as those fake liberals who say, “I’ve nothing against the gay community. In fact, some of my best friends are gay.”

13. Arya in 'Sarpatta Parambarai': In the author-backed role of Kabilan, Arya is a revelation. I’ve seen his earlier works. Nothing he has done in the past can ever equal the power and glory of the self-destructive streak and the redemptive strength that pull his character out of his self-made abyss into a tentative light at the end when in the final fight in the ring, he defeats his main adversary. Wife and mother who hate his boxing ambitions are there to cheer him on.The power of cinema is to sway and derail negative emotions. One of the many unadulterated pleasures of watching Sarpatta Parambarai is to see Kabilan’s absolutely endearing relationship with his wife. If the husband-wife relationship rings true, the guru-shishya tradition is here taken into a zone of insulated adoration where the protégé hero-worships his guru blindly. Arya manifests all the roles and emotions of his character with majestic authenticity and an empowering rawness. He is childlike in his stubbornness and a true hero in his selfless quest for victory in the boxing ring.

The year threw forward some surprises as far as the actors were concerned. As Sushmita Sen told me, she unlearned all the overt acting skills to just “be” in front of the camera for 'Aarya'.

We have seen sports dramas before. Films on the underdog, battling the odds and emerging as a winner is a known trope. But filmmaker Akarsh Khurana's new film 'Rashmi Rocket' stands out because it tries to above and beyond the usual. It may focus on one individual, but the film narrates an important story about the plight of female athletes in India.

In a country that is obsessed with cricket, 'Rashmi Rocket' comes as a breath of fresh air. Not only does it focus on female athletes and highlight the hard work they put in to represent our country, but also talk of how so many of them, despite their talent, fall prey to the rather arbitrary gender test which puts a break to so many of their thriving career on the track.

Rashmi Vira(Taapsee Pannu) is a gifted athlete and has been a star in her village in kutch. Raised differently by her spirited parents (Manoj Joshi and Supriya Pathak Kapoor), Rashmi grows up as one of the boys. A chance meeting with an Army officer(Priyanshu Painyuli), who also happens to be a former athlete and now trainer, makes her compete at the state level. Since she is the fastest runner in her state and perhaps in the country, in her category, the National Athletic Federation takes her in soon to coach her for the upcoming Asian Games.

Problems start brewing soon. First at the training camp when a few fellow athletes question her speed and later post her successful stint at the Asian Games, she is forced to undergo a gender test which bans her from competing in the international arena- stating that her testosterone is higher than an average woman's.

Rashmi initially doesn't want to take up the case, but a bit of nudging from her mother, husband and an out-of-luck lawyer (Abhishek Banerjee) makes her fight back. Rashmi takes the federation to court in a case of human rights violation.
Written by Nanda Periyasamy with a screenplay by Aniruddha Guha and an adittional screenplay by Kanika Dhillon, 'Rashmi Rocket' starts on a predictable course. Sports drama usually have certain moments on the field that are considered at the high point of the narrative. But that's not the case with the film. It doesn't get into too many details of Rashmi's rise in the international circuit. The film elevates, surprisingly, in the courtroom, when Rashmi is banned and fighting a case that has unfairly put her off the field.

Featuring actors like Zafar Karachiwala, Supriya Pilgaonkar as the no-nonsense judge, and of course Banerjee as the nervous but righteous advocate fighting for Rashmi, the courtroom scenes are the most engaging which some impactful dialogues and moments.

The scenes where the narrative slowly takes on the unfair system, highlighting how female athletes are discriminated against at all times compared to their male counterparts are not just informative but also makes you realise the glaring loopholes in the system.
The film boasts of great performances. Be it Taapsee Pannu who plays the protagonist with utmost conviction, delivering a restraint performance in a film that is going to be an important one in her repositories, but also actors like Abhishek Banerjee, Supriya Pathak, Supriya Pilgaonkar and Manoj Joshi. The film's male lead Priyanshu Painyuli, plays the supportive partner to Taapsee with conviction, although their romance is shown fleetingly.

Rashmi's equations with her parents and her husband are not given the emphasis that ideally should be given. We are told she drew her strength from her father. She seems to have a difficult, slightly dramatic relation with her mother who keeps blackmailing her to get her to do things and her attraction towards Painyuli's character is also never clearly shown. The film only is fleshed out properly in the second half, when the courtroom scenes take place.

Despite these flaws, 'Rashmi Rocket' is an important film. It treads on an unknown track and it shines because of its important message. The film doesn't narrate just one woman's struggle in a field that is biased towards men, but it represents all those women who have in the past faded due to unfair practices in sports.

Commenting on Pannu’s performance, Shomini Sen of WION had written, “…A conflicted character, Rani is similar to Dhillon's Rumi from 'Mannmarziyaan'- both played by Taapsee Pannu who has by now perfected the art of playing such characters on screen. They are dishevelled at the slightest of the crisis, they think they have everything in control and crave male attention. Rani is flawed, rude and someone you will not want in your life and yet Rishu falls head over heels in love.”

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu turns 34 today and while some may chose to throw big parties to ring in the new year of their lives, the ‘Haseen Dillruba’ star chose to head to the picturesque Nainital instead. Staring into oblivion, Taapsee captioned her mountain-based birthday post as, “Last week has been tough, tricky, testing but with this sunrise and this new year I shall again gather the strength to look forward to what life has in store for me coz….. Utho to aise utho, fakr ho bulandi ko. Jhuko to aise jhuko, bandgi bhi naaz kare (sic).” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taapsee Pannu (@taapsee) × Taapsee pannu was last seen in Netflix release ‘Haseen Dillruba’ alongside Bollywood actors Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane.
The recently released Netflix film ‘Haseen Dillruba’ may have received lukewarm response from film critics but that did not prevent it from garnering accolades from fans the world over.

Netflix viewers in over 22 countries have watched the movie enough times to make it trend on the subscription-based video streaming service’s application, reports claim.

Talking about the ‘far and wide’ reach of her latest outing, Taapsee said in a statement, “It's a very new feeling for me to see Haseen Dillruba reaching an audience around the world the way it has because I have never had a straight to OTT release before this, so I was excited for the debut and it has been fabulous. I think I have been very lucky with my debuts; my struggle only begins after that. Thanks to Netflix this film reached places that I never knew Hindi films could reach. The film was trending across 22 countries for over a week, as far out as South America, which is amazing. I am still trying to wrap my head around how exactly one feels when their film reaches so far and wide, getting so many messages from people in different parts of the world, in so many different languages. Many times I’ve had to translate to understand what they are saying. But success always feels so sweet. And I am thankful to audiences for the love they have poured on this film and me.”

“I believe the film resonated with so many people because it was based in a small city in the heart of India featuring characters that were flawed and grey, which resonates with the majority of the audience. When we see an on-screen representation of something like this, a part of us relates to the character as we are so used to watching stories of only positive and pious heroes who can do no wrong. It's refreshing to see such relatable stories about flawed people, and this shift in audience choice is such a welcome sign. Now, it's about keeping the audience on the edge of their seats, entertained, hooked and involved, which is what this film does well, having characters who are unconventional yet relatable,” concluded the actress.

Directed by Vinil Mathew, of ‘Hasee Toh Phasee’ fame, and written by ‘Kanika Dhillon’, known for ‘Guilty’ and ‘Manmarziyaan’, ‘Haseen Dillruba’ is an old-school Hindi murder-mystery film starring Bollywood actors Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane.
Taapsee Pannu on ‘Haseen Dillruba’ trending: I never knew Hindi films could reach that far

Bollywood actor Taapsee Pannu has launched her own production house—‘Outsiders Films’—and would like to ‘empower talent’ who are looking for a break with no film ‘background’ like her, she said in a statement.

The ‘Haseen Dillruba’ actress launched this venture in collaboration with Pranjal Khandhdiya, a producer and content creator with over 20 years of experience. Khandhdiya has been involved in the production of well-known films like ‘Super 30’, ‘83’, ‘Soorma’, ‘Piku’, ‘Mubarakan’, ‘Azhar’ among others.

“I’m thrilled to embark upon this new journey and diversify my love for cinema with my production house. With Outsiders Films, I aim to give back to the industry and empower talent who’re looking for a breakthrough and come with no background like me. Pranjal and I together look forward to opening doors for new and fresh talents, both in front and behind the camera… Hence, I always thought of setting my own production house. The audience and the industry have given me a lot of support and love over the 11 years of my career,” Taapsee said in a statement.

Bollywood actress Taapsee Pannu recently celebrated her rumoured boyfriend Mathias Boe’s 41dt birthday with friends and her sister Shagun Pannu with an intimate lunch. Although the ‘Haseen Dillruba’ actress did not share pictures from their lunch together on social media, Boe did. He wrote on his Instagram post, “Birthday lunch in the best company.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mathias Boe (@mathias.boe) × There have been numerous reports of them dating over the years but Taapsee has never really talked about her alleged relationship in public. Last year, the rumoured couple went to Maldives together along with their friends and Taapsee’s sister Shagun that fuelled the romance stories even further. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mathias Boe (@mathias.boe) × On Taapsee’s birthday last year, Boe had shared a sweet post, saying, “Happy birthday you crazy little creature, damn we are getting old fast, especially you. Can't believe how lucky I'm that I found someone who don't find me too annoying and (sometimes) laugh at my lame jokes. I will try my hardest to keep you smiling.” View this post on Instagram A post shared by Mathias Boe (@mathias.boe) × In an earlier interview with an entertainment portal, Taapsee called Boe part of her ‘inner circle’. “I didn’t want to date someone from the industry for this very reason. I want to keep my personal and professional lives separate. I always share a picture with those who matter to me on their birthdays and did the same for Mathias, who is a part of my inner circle,” she was quoted as saying. For the uninitiated, Mathias Boe is a Danish shuttler who has won a gold medal in the European Games in 2015 and also received a silver medal at the Summer Olympics 2012. On the work front, Taapsee Pannu was last sene in ‘Haseen Dillruba’ that started streaming on Netflix on July 2.
Filmmaker Vinil Mathews' latest 'Haseen Dillruba' begins on an intriguing note. A quiet bylane of Jwalapur in Haridwar is rocked by a blast one morning. Initial investigations seem to suggest that Rishabh aka Rishu has died at his home due to a cylinder blast. The cops suspect foul play and question Rishu's wife Rani - the only person who was around when the incident took place. They're also suspicious of Neel, a distant cousin of Rishu and Rani's clandestine lover.

Written by Kanika Dhillon, 'Haseen Dillruba' attempts to be an unconventional love story. Based on the theme of popular Hindi pulp fictions novels, the story uses the tropes of small towns in northern India to weave an intricate story of love, crime and passion.

A big-city girl 'settles' for a small town engineer who is head over heels in love with her. She thinks he is an average joe, even though he has a stable job in the state electricity board and dotes on her from the first day. He feels lucky and slightly nervous around his gorgeous wife. But the initial attraction wears off in almost a week for him and while she keeps trying to seduce him, he is unable to reciprocate in any way. Enter a new relative, an alpha man, who somehow convinces the rebel woman to enter the kitchen and woo him with good food- a quality that she lacks. There is sexual tension between the two and a torrid affair is inevitable. But will the husband know? Will she leave him for her lover? All these questions persist when the blast puts the wife in a spot- making her the prime suspect in the case.

While the film's first half is quirky and well-written, the second half, when the mystery slowly starts to unravel, appears rather stretched. The portions when Pannu's character revisits the past and how her and Rishu's story began- are well-enacted and even entertaining especially due to actress Yamini Das, who plays a shocked mother-in-law to a rather brazen daughter-in-law. Das is well-cast and in a limited part lights up the screen with her performance.

Much like her previous films 'Kedarnath' and 'Mannmarziyaan', Dhillon makes the female character the most complicated one in 'Haseen Dillruba'. Rani is aware of her good looks, and the power she has on men. By her admission, she is 'homely' and domesticated, even though she is least interested in doing any household chores. A conflicted character, Rani is similar to Dhillon's Rumi from 'Mannmarziyaan'- both played by Taapsee Pannu who has by now perfected the art of playing such characters on screen. They are dishevelled at the slightest of the crisis, they think they have everything in control and crave male attention. Rani is flawed, rude and someone you will not want in your life and yet Rishu falls head over heels in love.

Among the men, Rishu (Vikrant Massey) - much like Rani - is a complicated character. He looks like a naive young man who easily falls hard in love but he has his own quirks which are borderline toxic.

Perhaps the most linear character is that of Neel (Harshwardhan Rane) even though he is projected as a mysterious sexy lover who knows how to woo a bored housewife. Both Massey and Rane are good in their respective parts even though they play secondary characters to Pannu, they hold their own. Massey especially is well-cast as the small-town do-gooder Rishu who doesn't know how to be around a gorgeous, upfront woman like Rani.

What starts off as an interesting - even though slightly predictable - love story set in a small town, soon turns dark. As Rani sits at the police station narrating her story to Inspector Rawat, she often borrows lines from her favourite author Dinesh Gupta's pulp fiction novels and describes her definition of love, which she feels is incomplete without a bit of sacrifice. But the references to books that both Rani and Rishu love are also sketchy- only borrowing heavily during the climax.

A tale of crime and passion should ideally be high on suspense. It should keep the viewer hooked till the end but 'Haseena Dillruba' falters at every step as the story slowly unravels. There is a lack of chemistry between the leads and it takes time to accept their story of passion and love. The suspense never builds up. The character development of Rani and Rishu is slightly illogical. And in the name of passion and true love, a lot of toxicity is belted out where the woman seems to be okay at being tortured by her husband just because she has cheated on him.

The climax is underwhelming and you end up rolling your eyes a bit too much towards the end.

'Haseen Dillruba' excites the viewer only in parts and those are not related to the murder mystery that it sets out to be.

'Haseen Dillruba' review: Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey's latest film has a warped sense of love

Lately, Taapsee Pannu’s been all over the internet thanks to her latest outing ‘Haseen Dillruba’ alongside Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane on Netflix. And in a promotional digital lie detector game for the film, Massey asked Taapsee if she had direct messaged (DMd) anyone who doesn’t follow her. The lady was quick to admit that she had and never heard back from that celebrity.

Dholakia tweeted, "There are some films which you know you have to do. Shabaash Mithu was that film. Shabaash Mitthu: Srijit Mukherji takes on the baton from Rahul Dholakia to helm the Taapsee Pannu starrer

Taapsee Pannu, Vikrant Massey and Harshvardhan Rane feature in Vinil Mathew's 'Haseen Dillruba' - a story of love, lust and murder.

The trailer of the film was unveiled on Friday and shows Taapsee Pannu playing a woman who desires to live her life like a character of a novel. She soon finds herself embroiled in a murder case and is accused of killing her husband (Vikrant Massey). The trailer suggests Harshvardhan Rane plays Taapsee's lover in the film.

The story and screenplay has been written by Kanika Dhillon who has worked with Taapsee earlier in 'Manmarziyaan'. The trailer suggests the film is based in a small town and has its share of quirk, passion and mystery in the story.

Taapsee said she had a strong gut feeling about the story from the time she first heard it. "I wasn’t the first choice for the film and it came to me after all their options were exhausted. And the good old saying that, if it’s meant for you it will come to you stands true for this case. It’s not just a beautifully written mystery, it has such wonderful characters involved which is candy in an actor’s hands. I am glad I got to experiment with my look and performance with this one because I am definitely not the go to person for this kind of character conventionally and we all love to take risks here," said the actress in a statement.
The film has been produced by Anand L Rai's Colour Yellow Production and will release on Netflix in July.
