Golden Globes 2023: SS Rajamouli, Ram Charan don traditional Indian outfits, Jr NTR opts for tuxedo

Blockbuster Telugu movie 'RRR's song 'Naatu Naatu' created history today by becoming the first Indian song to win a Golden Globe award in the Best Original Song category. And, a fun fact about the track is currently taking the internet by storm.

Since many people didn't know that the peppy dance number was shot outside Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's official residence in 2021, this information is leaving them shocked and surprised.

Yes, you read it right! The hit number, featuring Ram Charn and Jr NTR, was shot at the Mariinskyi Palace, which is the official ceremonial residence of the President of Ukraine.

SS Rajamouli once shared this fun fact about the song in an interview. While speaking to Sandeep Reddy Vanga, SS Rajamouli said, "We shot the Naatu Naatu song in Ukraine. It is a real location. Actually, it is the Ukrainian President’s palace. There is a parliament right beside the palace. Luckily, they gave us permission to shoot because the Ukrainian president was a television actor. The funny thing is that he acted as the President in a TV series before becoming the President."

Blockbuster Telugu movie 'RRR's song 'Naatu Naatu' created history today by becoming the first Indian song to win a Golden Globe award in the Best Original Song category.

The funny thing is that he acted as the President in a TV series before becoming the President." 'Naatu Naatu' shot outside Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelenskyy's palace, reveals 'RRR' director SS Rajamouli

In the run-up to the awards season, which begins on next Tuesday with the Golden Globes, SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' has become an unlikely frontrunner. The film was a big hit in its native country, India, but it was the overseas release and then the streaming release by Netflix that made it a worldwide phenomenon. It has scored two nominations in Golden Globe Awards, and is also expected to get Academy Awards nominations. Meanwhile, this NT Rama Rao Jr and Ram Charan starrer is in the British Academy Film Awards (BAFTA) awards longlist in the 'Film Not in the English Language' category. Shaunak Sen's 'All that Breathes' has also entered the longlist.

'RRR' follows two real-life revolutionaries who took on the might of the British Empire in the early 20th century. Alluri Sitarama Raju (Charan) and Komaram Bheem (Rama Rao) join forces in 1920 to fight the colonialists. Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris were also in the cast of 'RRR'.

The Indian government chose Pan Nalin's Gujarati film 'Chhello Show' as an official entry for the Oscars in the 'Best Foreign Film' category, but that has not deterred Rajamouli and his backers in the US. They have become even more enthusiastic about the film's chances in major categories including Best Director and Best Picture.

Wion's film critic Shomini Sen called the film a 'superhero film set in pre-independent India'. She wrote, "'RRR' is a superhero fantasy film. Best not to compare it to Rajamouli's immensely successful 'Baahubali' franchise and it isn't even as sharp as 'Eega'. It was perhaps set out to be a masala entertainer and it is just that. But could a filmmaker of SS Rajamouli's stature have made a film with a more coherent plotline? Yes for sure."
But it was the Netflix release worldwide that catapulted the film from the 'mildly popular' category to a worldwide sensation. One of the film's songs 'Naatu Naatu' has become something of a phenomenon across the world, with thousands of people recreating the song's choreography and sharing it on social media sites. Everyone from comedians to actors to filmmakers in Hollywood has found themselves transfixed by the audacious action of the film and the direction of Rajamouli.
How did 'RRR' become such a humongous success?

Rajamouli has always been an expert at crafting cinematic set pieces. We saw that ability play a big part in the 'Baahubali' movies. He is extremely careful about the technical aspects of his films. That done, he creates sequences that may not follow logic, and they are not meant to, but are wildly entertaining once you surrender your faculties to the film. He makes no pretence of creating action that follows the laws of physics or any such thing. He delivers crazy, outlandish, gravity and logic-defying spectacle that you have to enjoy on his own terms. 'RRR' is the most Rajamouli-ish Rajamouli has ever been. In India, the film was quite a big hit, but we have seen such big, masala-stuffed films before, though nothing on that scale.

The rest of the world? They hadn't. And the movie being available on Netflix made sure the commitment to watch the admittedly fairly long movie wasn't that big. And they simply fell under the spell cast by Rajamouli. As per author and 'Doctor Strange' co-screenwriter C. Robert Cargill 'RRR' "is a level of spectacle that defies description."

What chances 'RRR' has in Golden Globes 2023?

The answer to this question is not simple.

That was the Oscars. But the movie did not sadly get nominated in the top categories of Golden Globes, like Best Picture, Best Director, and so on. And the awards, organised and presented by Hollywood Foreign Press Association (HFPA), do often seem to have an effect on the ultimate outcome of the Academy Awards. While Golden Globes awards movies and shows and individuals for best work in the decided duration, the Oscars are exclusively for films.

Also the winners of Globes are chosen by a coterie of journalists (the aforementioned HFPA). Oscar winners are chosen by a jury. This is one of the reasons the Oscars have a better reputation (though the Will Smith-Chris Rock incident in March, 2022 did dent the Academy's reputation).

So what are the chances? The best chance for the Rajamouli film is 'Naatu Naatu'. A truly amazingly choreographed song with a catchy tune, it has captured the imagination of millions around the world. It may even be the best-known thing about the film. There are few other songs in the category that stand a chance against 'Naatu Naatu'.

When it comes to the other category in which the film is nominated, Best Non-English Language Film, the acclaimed German anti-war film 'All Quiet on the Western Front' may play spoilsport for 'RRR'. There is also Park Chan-wook's 'Decision to Leave', which is also a widely-praised film.

So while the Best Original Song category looks nearly certain, the other category is less so. Also, Golden Globes, more than the Oscars, are known to be more unpredictable, though more so in the TV categories. With the ceremony a little more than 10 days away, our questions and curiosities are soon going to be answered. For more coverage of the Golden Globes, stay tuned.

'RRR' Oscar campaign: NT Rama Rao Jr, Ram Charan to make first US appearance with SS Rajamouli in LA screening

One step closer to the Oscars! On Wednesday, the Academy of Motion Pictures Arts and Sciences announced the shortlists in 10 categories of the 2023 Oscars. Indian films 'RRR', 'The Last Film Show' and 'All That Breathes' have all found mentions in various categories.

SS Rajamouli has been campaigning for his film in Los Angeles for months now. Despite the intensive campaigning, the film has managed to advance in only one category - Original Song for the film's hit track 'Naatu Naatu'.
The film had been submitted for consideration in several categories, including Best Picture, Best Director, Best Actor, Best Visual Effects, among others.

It should be noted that while 'RRR' failed to feature in any other list barring Original Song, it still stands a chance to bag nominations in the other major categories, including Best Picture and Best Director. If it happens, it would be a first for any Indian film.

Pan Nalin's Gujarati film, 'The Last Film Show' which is India's official entry this year at Oscar's in the Best International Feature Film Category has also been named in the shortlisted category. The film is an autobiographical film of Nalin and explores the story of a young boy in a remote village in Gujarat and his love for cinema.

Shaunak Sen's 'All That Breathes' too has made it to the Academy list. Kartiki Gonsalves’ documentary short The Elephant Whisperers also managed to secure a place in the shortlist category of Documentary Short Film.

Sen's 'All That Breathes' has already picked up awards at various international film festivals earlier this year including Cannes 2022 and now stands a strong changes to not only score a nomination but also win an Oscar.
SS Rajamouli's 'RRR' earns two nominations at 2023 Golden Globe Awards

2022 has been a tough year for Bollywood overall. In a year when most Hindi films were rejected by moviegoers and the #boycott trended more than the film titles on social media, there was very little to celebrate in Bollywood. But if there was a glimmer of sunshine amid so much hate it was to witness the rise of actress Alia Bhatt who cemented her position at the top this year with three hits, delivering stellar performances in three distinct films.

For Alia, the year began with Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Gangubai Kathiawadi. Based on the real-life character of the same known who was known to run a small nexus in Kamathipura the red light district of Mumbai in the 1970s- 80s, there was a certain amount of literature available on Gangu. And so when Bhansali had initially announced the film with Bhatt in the lead, most were skeptical as they felt the actress was too young to play such a role. But Bhatt manages to shut the harshest of her critics as she brought a certain gravitas to her character. The range that the character goes through through the course of the film - from a gullible, innocent girl who is forced into prostitution to becoming the leader of the pack and subsequently a political leader who becomes messiah for many in her area, Bhatt showcased myriad emotions effectively delivering a haunting, impactful performance.

Next up was SS Rajamouli's global blockbuster RRR which had Bhatt in an extended cameo. The film marked her debut in Telugu cinema and even though her screen time as Sita was limited, she managed to create an impression among the audience. Rajamouli's 'RRR' continues to garner praise across the world eight months after its release and is now being touted as an Oscar favourite in a few categories. Its popularity worldwide has not just helped Rajamouli clinch a deal with top talent management agency CAA but also helped its actors gain prominence outside of India- including Alia Bhatt.

The actress also turned producer this year and collaborated with Shah Rukh Khan's Red Chillies to produce a dark comedy called 'Darlings' which was released on Netflix. The film had Alia Bhatt playing Badru, a victim of domestic violence at home. How she and her mother Shamshu (Shefali Shah) take revenge on her husband Hamza forms the rest of the story. Directed by debutant Jasmeet Reen, the film boasted of terrific performances from its entire cast including Bhatt, Shah and Vijay Verma who played the lead. Debunking a few societal myths around marriage and love, the film was a stunning cinematic experience. Engaging, quirky, and a story that made you rethink the notion of redemption. Bhatt shined, as the vulnerable Badru who has to come to terms with her abusive husband and take charge of things.

Alia closed the year with Ayan Mukerji's dream project, 'Brahamastra Part 1:Shiva' - a film that the actress on several past occasions, has termed as special. It is on the sets of this film that she fell in love and started dating actor Ranbir Kapoor. The pair tied the knot in April this year and they welcomed their first child, a baby girl, in November. Kapoor and Bhatt also shared a crackling chemistry in 'Brahmastra Part 1 : Shiva' a film that merged mythology with modern-day technology to create India's very own superhero franchise. Several critics felt Bhatt was wasted in the film which mostly focussed on Shiva's character but the film's box office success ensured Bhatt's position as the number one star.

For most in Bollywood, marriage and a baby leads to a career break if not a complete exit from films. But Bhatt is raring to go, she married at the peak of her career and there's so much still of her to be discovered by the audience. Bhatt also has Karan Johar's 'Rocky Aur Rani Ki Prem Kahani' opposite Ranveer Singh, releasing in early 2023, and needless to say, the film is going to be a quintessential Bollywood romance that Johar is known for. And Bhatt beautifully balances it all. From playing the quintessential Bollywood heroine to backing and starring in a film on domestic violence- Alia Bhatt manages to shine in every role.

The Oscar campaign of SS Rajamouli's colonial India-set Telugu epic action drama film 'RRR' just got a shot in the arm as the director won the 'Best Director' trophy at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards.

The Oscar campaign of SS Rajamouli's colonial India-set Telugu epic action drama film 'RRR' just got a shot in the arm as the director won the 'Best Director' trophy at the New York Film Critics Circle Awards. The surprise win has increased the Oscar chances of NT Rama Rao Jr and Ram Charan film. The film was disappointingly not officially submitted to the Academy by the Indian government for the Best International Feature category. However, Rajamouli has submitted the film to the Oscars in 14 categories in 'For Your Consideration' campaign. Meanwhile, Charlotte Wells' 'Aftersun' was deemed the best first film by the jury. 'RRR' Oscar campaign gets a huge boost: SS Rajamouli takes Best Director award at New York Film Critics Awards

Even after 10 months of release, the craze of 'RRR' still refuses to die down. The film, starring Jr. NTR and Ram Charan in the lead roles, is one of the most successful movies of the year. Not just this, but the actioner has also been submitted for an Oscar, and recently it was released in Japan, where it raked in big bucks at the box office. After the successful Part 1, Rajamouli has seemingly confirmed that he's planning to come back with a sequel to Rise, Revolt, and Roar.

During an event in Chicago, the director was asked about the possibility of an 'RRR' sequel, to which the director replied that actually his father and screenwriter Vijayendra Prasad have already started working on it.

"I would absolutely love to I can’t reveal many details about it, but my father, who has been a screenwriter for all my films, including RRR, We discussed a bit about it, and he is working on the story,'' the director said.

Hollywood talent agency CAA signs SS Rajamouli days after RRR's Oscar snub

SS Rajamouli has spoken about the humongous global success of his latest film 'RRR'. The epic action drama was the first film by the Telugu director since 2017's 'Baahubali: The Conclusion' and starred N. T. Rama Rao Jr. and Ram Charan in the lead roles. Set in 1929, the film followed a fictional story about two real revolutionaries called Alluri Sitarama Raju and Komaram Bheem who took on the might of the British Empire. While it was a big success in India and overseas in terms of theatrical performance, it was when Netflix released the movie in the US and other western countries that it really took off. Ajay Devgn, Alia Bhatt, Shriya Saran, Samuthirakani, Ray Stevenson, Alison Doody, and Olivia Morris were also featured in the cast.

Multiple personalities from Hollywood took to social media to wax eloquent about how unapologetically over-the-top the film was and praised its action sequences.
