T20 World Cup: Lanka cricketer Danushka Gunathilaka arrested in Sydney on sexual assault charges

Afghanistan locked horns with Sri Lanka in a crucial Super 12 clash in Group A in the Men's T20 World Cup 2022 on Tuesday (November 01). Playing at The Gabba, Brisbane, the two Asian teams were in need of a win to keep their semi-final hopes alive but Dasun Shanaka-led Asian champions beat the Mohommad Nabi-led Afghan line-up by six wickets, with nine balls to spare.

Opting to bat first, the Afghan batters got starts but none of them stayed till the end or anchored the innings to take the team total beyond the 160-run mark. The likes of Rahmanullah Gurbaz, Usman Ghani, Ibrahim Zadran, Najibullah Zadran, and Gulbadin Naib got starts but none of them looked threatening enough. Captain Nabi tried to up the ante in the end overs and returned with an 8-ball 13 to take Afghanistan to a modest 144 for 8 in 20 overs.

From SL's perspective, spin-bowling all-rounder Wanindu Hasaranga shined and returned with 3 for 13 whereas Kasun Rajitha and Lahiru Kumara ended with two wickets apiece. With a fine performance with the ball, Hasaranga is now at the top for most wickets in the ongoing edition (13).

In reply, the Lankan openers couldn't put up an impressive first-wicket stand as Pathum Nissanka fell early (10). Kusal Mendis (25) also followed suit as Afghanistan was alive in the contest with SL being 46 for 2 in 7.5 overs. Apart from the Afghan spinners Rashid (2 for 31) and Mujeeb Ur Rahman (2 for 24), none of the other bowlers chipped in with wickets as Dhananjaya de Silva batted with ease and helped the Islanders bring down the required run rate with a brisk 42-ball 66, at 157.14.

De Silva's fluent knock ensured no further hiccups for SL with Charith Asalanka and Bhanuka Rajapaksa getting starts as well. Eventually, SL eased past Afghanistan by chasing down the score in 18.3 overs with six wickets in hand.

With this loss, Afghanistan are out of the competition -- with two of their games being washed out. On the other hand, SL remain alive in the race for the semi-finals; adding pressure on England and Australia.

T20 WC: Hasaranga, De Silva help Sri Lanka oust Afghanistan to remain alive in race for semi-finals

The T20 World Cup (T20 WC) 2022 edition started with a bang. The one-time winners and current Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka lost to Namibia in their opening game of the qualifying round whereas two-time champions West Indies went down to Scotland, by 42 runs, in their tournament opener. West Indies defeated Zimbabwe by 31 runs on Wednesday (October 19) to spice things up in Group B, the Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders also got off the mark in the showpiece event, in Australia, with a win over UAE a day before.

Sri Lanka might have opened their account in the mega event, however, they still have lots to do in order to progress into the Super 12 round. They face Netherlands, who beat Namibia and the UAE, in their last encounter and it is a do-or-die game for the 2014 champions. Ahead of their crucial tie, here's how SL can make it to the next round of the competition.

EXPLAINED: How Sri Lanka can enter Super 12 round

At present, Sri Lanka occupy the third position in Group A, with a one and a loss and an NRR of +0.600. A win will see them go achieve four points and will better either Netherlands or Namibia, on run rate or points basis. The margin of error is very less for Shanaka & Co. as a defeat will all but end their journey in the eighth edition of the T20 WC.

Given how rain has already played spoilsport in the ongoing edition, if weather god does not permit a game, then SL could face elimination incase of Namibia's win over UAE in the remaining Group A clash. In case both the matches are abandoned due to rain, the Lankans will be on their way back home due to a poor NRR than Namibia and having lesser points than current table-toppers Netherlands.

On the other hand, Namibia will go through with a win over UAE irrespective of the outcome in the SL-Netherlands' face-off. If both Sri Lanka and Namibia win, it will see all the three teams such as Netherlands, Namibia and the Lankans on four points each. In such a scenario, the latter two will proceed ahead. The Dutch side will suffer due to their narrow wins so far in the competition.

Facing UAE, on Tuesday, Patham Nissanka's 74 and three-fers each from Wanindu Hasaranga and Dushmantha Chameera starred in SL's 79-run win over UAE. Being asked to bat first, the one-time winners posted 152-8 before dismissing the opposition for a paltry 73 all-out in 17.1 overs.

At the post-match presentation, Shanaka said, "They (crowd) are following us everywhere we go. I'd like to thank them. Really disappointed with the way we ended the innings (with the bat). We could have scored 180-190. The tone was set upfront, but Bhanu (Bhanuka Rajapaksa) and I didn't click. It was important to tick with a win, we focused on a win only. He (Pathum Nissanka ) is outstanding, his focus is to bat through the innings. I'm happy for him. (When asked about Chameera's injury) Hopefully everything will be fine."

T20 World Cup: Ahead of do-or die game vs Netherlands, here's how Sri Lanka can enter Super 12 round

India will kick off their T20 World Cup 2022 campaign against arch-rivals Pakistan on October 23 at the iconic Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne. While there is significant hype around the clash with the encounter being deemed as a virtual decider for the top spot in Group 2 of Super 12, former India opener Gautam Gambhir has warned the Indian team to be wary of another opposition which is peaking at the right time.

Gambhir believes Sri Lanka can pose a huge threat to the major teams at the T20 World Cup this year as they are running high on confidence after winning the Asia Cup 2022. Sri Lanka had stunned India in the group stage before defeating Pakistan in the final to clinch the Asia Cup trophy for the sixth time earlier this year.

Gambhir feels Sri Lanka are peaking at the right time in the shortest format having won the Asia Cup and will take a lot of confidence into the tournament.

“Sri Lanka, because of the kind of success they have had at the Asia Cup. The way they are playing, the way they are probably peaking at the right time. And with Chameera and Lahiru Kumara coming in, they probably got most of their places covered. They are going to be a threat and so they are going to take a lot of confidence into the T20 World Cup,” the former India opener said during a discussion on Star Sports.

However, Sri Lanka's shock defeat at the hands of 14th-ranked Namibia in the qualifiers proved Gambhir's prediction slightly wrong on Sunday (October 16). In one of the biggest upsets in the tournament so far, Namibia thrashed Asia Cup champions Sri Lanka by 55 runs to get off to a winning start.

Explained: What Sri Lanka's shock defeat against Namibia could mean for India in T20 World Cup 2022?

When the T20 World Cup commenced for the first time in 2007, not many had high hopes from the tournament. After the resounding success of the inaugural edition, held in South Africa, the shortest format has received humongous success all across the globe, helping in IPL's magnanimous rise over the years, and leading to the birth of many T20 leagues worldwide.

The shortest format has led to the game's expansion and helped it reach various untapped territories. The format is such that the margin of error is very small and, thus, it becomes very tough for any side, irrespective of their ranking or overall stature, to dominate in the T20 WC. As a result, none of the teams have managed to defend their title whereas teams such as New Zealand and South Africa are yet to win their maiden title. Ahead of the eighth edition of the T20 WC, which will kick off on October 16 in Australia, here's a list of winners in the tournament history:

While defending the T20 WC title isn't easy by any means, Aussie captain Aaron Finch has promised the national side's fans that his team will give their all in the forthcoming edition. "The ICC T20 Men’s World Cup is going to be a great spectacle and a huge honour for us to defend the trophy in front of our home fans. There are so many great sides with the very best players in the world coming to Australia. It’s an amazing opportunity for Australian fans to see the world’s best.,” Finch stated in an official release. "We’ve felt the power of home crowd support at the 2015 One-Day Cricket World Cup and the Women’s ICC T20 World Cup last year. It will be great to have the whole country behind us and make it another World Cup to remember. We will surely try our best," he added.

Australia, England, New Zealand and Afghanistan are placed in Pool A. On the other hand, Pool B comprises India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and South Africa whereas four more teams will join the main draw of the event, two in each group, after the conclusion of the qualifying round.

'Sri Lanka cannot be taken easy': Wasim Akram picks his favourites ahead of Asia Cup 2022 final

Pakistan will lock horns with Sri Lanka in the blockbuster final of the Asia Cup 2022 at the Dubai International Stadium in Dubai on Sunday (September 11). While Sri Lanka will be aiming to win their seventh title, Pakistan will be looking to lift their third trophy. Sri Lanka defeated Pakistan comprehensively in the Super Four meeting between the two teams on Friday and will be aiming to repeat their feat in the final showdown on Sunday.

Sri Lanka have arguably been the best team in the tournament so far having lost just once. They got off to a shaky start with an 8-wicket loss at the hands of Afghanistan but have since won their next four matches in a row to make it to the final. Pakistan, on the other hand, will be aiming to bounce back after losing their last encounter against Sri Lanka in Super Four.

Pakistan have had a topsy-turvy run in the tournament as they started with a morale-crushing defeat against arch-rivals India in their opener but were quick to bounce back and thrashed Hong Kong ruthlessly in their next game. Babar Azam & Co. then went on to avenge their loss by beating India in the Super Four before surviving a mighty scare to beat Afghanistan in a thriller next to make it to the final.

Their five-wicket loss against Sri Lanka n Friday was an eye-opener for Pakistan, who saw their batting collapse once again after the top order failed to deliver. Pakistan's middle-order hasn't been tested much in the tournament and Sri Lanka can once again put them under pressure in the final f they can get their openers early.

Sri Lankan spinner Wanindu Hasaranga and Maheesh Theekshana both bowled exceptionally well against Pakistan and will be hoping to continue their fine form in the final. The Lankan batters will also have to be ready for a stern test against the in-form Pakistan pace attack.

Here is all you need to know about the Asia Cup 2022 final:

Head-to-head record

Sri Lanka and Pakistan have met thrice in the Asia Cup final with the Men in Green winning twice. Pakistan defeated Sri Lanka in the finals of the 1986 and the 2014 editions of the tournament while Sri Lanka emerged victorious in 2000. Sri Lanka have been the most consistent team in the Asia Cup with 11 final appearances under their belt.

The toss factor

Teams batting second have enjoyed a massive advantage over the teams batting first on the Dubai surface in T20Is over the last few months. 26 out of the last 30 T20Is in Dubai have been won by teams chasing. In the Asia Cup 2022, India's victory against Hong Kong is the only game in Dubai which has been won by the team batting first. Winning the toss will thus be crucial to the chances of both teams in the final on Sunday.

Nissanka led Sri Lanka's batting charge right from the get-go. He stood firm in the face of Pakistan's bowlers through to the end even though a number of his fellow batsmen were sent back to the stands.

His unbeaten knock of 55 did wonders for Sri Lanka's charge against Pakistan, setting the tone for their next and final clash of the tournament. Building on his exhilarating performance, Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored 24 runs and Dasun Shanaka put 21 on the board to help see their team through.

In addition to their batting, Sri Lanka's efforts from the opposite end of the pitch were nothing less than impressive. They put on an absolute masterclass as far as bowling was concerned, cruising past the Pakistani batting lineup to send them packing at 121.

Asia Cup 2022: Pathum Nissanka leads Sri Lanka's impressive chase beating Pakistan by five wickets

Sri Lanka took on Pakistan in what can only be described as a prequel to the penultimate match of the Asia Cup after which, one side will be crowned champions of the prestigious tournament.

Although the first innings of the final match of the Super Four stage of the Asia Cup featured some exhilarating performances from the Sri Lankan bowling order, it is perhaps the incident involving Pakistan's Fakhar Zaman that overshadowed everything else.

While facing Pramod Madushan in the sixth over, the No. 3 batsman for the Men in Green found himself in a unique predicament. In the final delivery of the over, the ball clipped the inside edge of Zaman's bat before proceeding to roll back to the stumps, making impact.

However, to everyone's surprise, including Zaman, he managed to escape getting bowled from the delivery as the impact was not strong enough to knock the bails off the wicket, offering the 32-year-old a new lease on life on the pitch.

Asia Cup 2022: Fakhar Zaman astonishingly escapes dismissal as ball fails to knock bails off the wicket- Watch

India and Sri Lanka produced a thrilling contest in the Super Four clash at the Asia Cup 2022 edition before Rohit Sharma & Co. went down on the penultimate ball. Defending a competitive 174, Dasun Shanaka & Co. rode on the captain's finishing cameo, Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 25-ball 17* and fifties from Pathan Nissanka-Kusal Mendis to push India close to an early elimination.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India rode on the skipper's 42-ball 71 and some useful contributions from Suryakumar Yadav (34), Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya (17 runs apiece) and R Ashwin's 7-ball 15 not out to post 173/8. In reply, SL's refreshing and confident approach took India by surprise with the game going down to the wire.

In the last over, Arshdeep Singh was given seven runs to defend and the 23-year-old speedster gave his all to keep the game alive. With two needed off as many deliveries, wicketkeeper Rishabh Pant had taken a glove off in anticipation of a throw. While Shanaka failed to connect the second-last delivery, he ran and Pant missed a direct hit, which would've easily led to Rajapaksa's dismissal.

Following Pant's failed attempt, Arshdeep also tried to run-out Shanaka at the non-striker's end before missing the stumps as the Lankan batters completed two runs. Thus, SL beat India by six wickets on the penultimate delivery. After Pant's failed attempt, Twitterati was quick to criticise him and MS Dhoni began trending in no time. Watch: MS Dhoni trends on Twitter after Rishabh Pant misses direct hit in final over during India-SL clash

After a defeat versus Pakistan, India faced Sri Lanka in a crucial Super Four clash in the Asia Cup 2022 edition on Tuesday (September 06). Riding on Rohit Sharma's 41-ball 72 and some contributions from Suryakumar Yadav, Rishabh Pant, Hardik Pandya and R Ashwin, they managed a competitive 173-8 but the Lankans impressed throughout the contest and defeated India by six wickets in a pulsating run-chase, with Dilshan Madushanka, Kusal Mendis, Pathum Nissanka and captain Dasun Shanaka leading the charge. With another defeat in the Super Four, India have one foot on the flight back home.

Being asked to bat first, Rohit-led India lost KL Rahul and Virat Kohli for cheap. While Maheesh Theekshana dismissed Rahul, Kohli looked clueless and played a very poor shot off Dilshan Madushanka to depart for a four-ball duck. The onus fell on captain Rohit and he looked in his elements. He was joined by his Mumbai Indians' (MI) teammate Suryakumar Yadav as the two stitched 97-run stand with Rohit being the aggressor, smashing some big sixes en route to an impressive 41-ball 72 (laced with 5 fours, 4 sixes). His dismissal, however, brought the Lankans back into the contest with SKY (34), Rishabh Pant and Hardik Pandya (falling for 17 apiece) with the bowlers using the longer dimensions of the ground to good effect.

Chamika Karunaratne and Dasun Shanaka accounted for two scalps each and a combined bowling effort restricted India to 173/8. Madushanka was most impressive with a spell of 4-0-24-3. With the Lankans having completed two successive run-chases on the trot, they were favourites going into the run-chase.

In reply, SL openers Kusal Mendis and Pathum Nissanka started off on a confident note. The Indian bowlers didn't resort to the change of pace as much as the Lankans and paid the price. The two openers complemented each other and found the boundaries at regular intervals as India failed to produce wicket-taking deliveries. At the halfway stage, SL were 89 for no loss. In the 12th over, Yuzvendra Chahal inflicted two wickets on the trot to bring India back into the game. R Ashwin also removed Danushka Gunathilaka but Nissanka's wicket changed the complexion of the game completely.

However, skipper Shanaka's 18-ball 33 not out and Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 17-ball 25* took the Islanders home in another last-ball thriller. Arshdeep Singh tried his best in the final over but some sloppy work on the field and few loose deliveries from time to time sealed India's fate, bringing them very close to an early elimination. They now face Afghanistan on Thursday (September 08) but will hope for the Afghan side to beat Pakistan on Wednesday (September 07) to remain alive in the contest by the barest of margins.

If Pakistan win even one of their remaining two games, India will stand eliminated irrespective of the result against Afghanistan.

Asia Cup: Sri Lanka beat India by 6 wickets in Super 4, push Rohit Sharma & Co. near elimination

India topped their Group A and stormed into the Super Four in the Asia Cup before losing having an off-day against Pakistan on Sunday evening (September 04). In both sides' Super Four opening games, Babar Azam-led Pakistan beat India by five wickets in a thrilling contest at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai. In a high-scoring affair, India were asked to bat first and rode on Virat Kohli's 44-ball 60 to post 181/7 before Mohammad Rizwan's 71 and Mohammad Nawaz's 20-ball 42 propelled Men in Green to a stunning win on the penultimate ball of the encounter.

With the defeat, India's journey at the Asia Cup has been dented. Rohit Sharma & Co. entered the tournament as favourites and had a fine start. They also fought hard till the last over versus Pakistan before losing the tie and a solitary defeat has pushed them on the back foot given the format of the tournament. They face Sri Lanka and Afghanistan in their next two Super Four clashes, a must-win by all means, and will hope to beat them both to enter the summit clash.

In terms of rankings, India (1st) and Sri Lanka (8th) are poles apart. However, the rankings don't matter one bit at this point of the tournament. The Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders had lost their tournament-opener to Afghanistan before turning the tides emphatically with two impressive wins over Bangladesh and Afghanistan (in their Super Four opener). Thus, the momentum has shifted in Sri Lanka's favour in no time and the pressure is now on Team India. In all scenario, expect another thriller on cards when India face Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening, at the same venue where they lost to Pakistan.

Match prediction for India vs Sri Lanka Asia Cup clash: Another good surface akin for batters will be on cards in the battle of two Asian heavyweights. The captain winning the toss will aim to bowl first and can expect to chase anything over 170-175. Will India bounce back in style and go past the Sri Lankans? Well, they will still be favourites given their balance and overall batting prowess.

Asia Cup 2022: Sri Lanka stun Afghanistan in opening Super Four clash as they emerge triumphant

Sri Lanka batter Bhanuka Rajapaksa has compared his team's rivalry with Bangladesh in cricket to that of arch-rivals India and Pakistan. Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by two wickets in a thrilling encounter in the ongoing Asia Cup 2022 on Thursday to knock them out of the tournament.

India and Pakistan share one of the greatest rivalries in the history of cricket. It is a blockbuster affair when the two teams meet irrespective of the competition. Rajapaksa believes the rivalry between Sri Lanka and Bangladesh has also intensified over the years and brings the fans on the edge of their seats.

There were several heated moments between the two teams as they locked horns in the Asia Cup on Thursday. They were also involved in war of words off the pitch and Sri Lankan all-rounder Chamika Karunaratne added fuel to the fire by pulling off the 'Naagin dance' (snake dance) in the dugout after his team's 2-wicket win in Dubai.

Speaking about the rivalry between the two teams, Rajapaksa said it is like when India and Pakistan play each other. "It's like India-Pakistan playing. Bangladesh and Sri Lanka are rivals. But we are really good friends off the field," the Sri Lankan batter said in the post-match presser.

It was a valiant effort from Sri Lanka as they didn't head into the game as favourites. They even ended up conceding 183 runs after winning the toss and opting to bowl first. However, a brilliant knock of 60 runs from wicket-keeper batter Kusal Mendis and captain Dasun Shanaka's 33-ball 45 helped them chase down the target of 184 runs with four balls to spare.

Rajapaksa believes the win will serve as a huge confidence booster for the Sri Lankan players ahead of the Super Four stage. Explaining the secret behind their good show against Bangladesh, the batter said playing together in the last few months has brought the team closer.

"We are happy because after winning a game, it's quite thrilling and what we need is winning games. We came here to justify ourselves to the UAE. This tournament was supposed to be held in Sri Lanka, but unfortunately, with the situation back home, we couldn't keep it in Sri Lanka," said Rajapaksa.

"But with all the experience that the players have gained playing together in the last maybe 12 or 15 months, it has brought us much closer as a team," he added.

Talking about the fifth ODI, Sri Lanka's batting line-up faltered after the hosts won the toss and decided to bat first. They were skittled out for a paltry 160 runs as the likes of Jos Hazlewood, Pat Cummins and Matthew Kuhnemann picked up two wickets apiece.

In reply, Australia chased down the target comfortably with the help of crucial knocks from Alex Carey (45) and Marnus Labuschagne (31). Despite losing the final game by 4 wickets, Sri Lanka clinched the series 3-2 to register a historic series win against the Aussies.

Sri Lankan skipper Dasun Shanaka turned out to be the hero for his side as he played an absolute blinder of a knock to take his side home in a thrilling run-chase at the Pallekele International Cricket Stadium in Pallekele on Saturday (June 11). Shanaka went berserk with the bat in the death overs and took the Australian bowlers to the cleaners.

He came out to bat at number six when Sri Lanka were reeling at 96/4 in the 13th over. The Sri Lankan skipper went on to play a sensational knock of unbeaten 54 off just 25 deliveries to take his side home in the 177-run chase with one ball to spare. His knock was laced with four sixes and five fours as the Sri Lankan skipper made a mockery of the Aussie bowling attack.

Sri Lanka required 19 to win off the final over with Kane Richardson bowling the last over for the Aussies. Shanka slammed back-to-back fours on the third and fourth delivery of the over before smashing a six on the penultimate ball to put the hosts on the verge of a victory and also bring up his fifty off just 25 balls.

Sri Lanka shatter world record as Dasun Shanaka helps them pull off epic run-chase against Australia

Captain Dasun Shanaka`s quickfire knock (54 not off 25) helped Sri Lanka beat Australia by four wickets in the third T20I and avoid a clean sweep in the three-match series at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium, here on Saturday. However, Aaron Finch led Australia, who won the first two matches, took home the series 2-1. After winning their third toss in a row, Australia opted to bat first and included Josh Inglis in place of Mitchell Marsh, who was out with a minor calf strain.

David Warner was slow to get off the blocks for Australia but Finch made up for his partner`s slow start. He welcomed Dushmantha Chameera into the bowling with two fours in his first over and dished out the same treatment to Maheesh Theekshana in his next.

The change of ends didn`t help Chameera, though it did with Theekshana. Finch and Warner accumulated a boundary each in the penultimate over of the Powerplay but the spinner broke through for his side, ending the Aussie skipper`s entertaining knock of 29 from 20 balls.

Maxwell sent the ball into the stands off his second ball while Warner broke loose after the end of fielding restrictions. The three overs after the Powerplay fetched 33 runs and it looked like Australia were going to set a massive total for Sri Lanka to chase down but the hosts were not going down without a fight.

Wanindu Hasaranga got the big wicket of Maxwell, who picked the googly but failed to gain the elevation for a maximum. Off the very next ball, DRS came to Sri Lanka`s rescue as Theekshana trapped Warner in front of the stumps for 39. Inglis was run-out for a first-ball duck, making it three wickets in three balls for Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka tightened the screws in the middle overs, with overs 9-15 accounting for three wickets while giving away only one boundary. Marcus Stoinis took on Praveen Jayawickrama with a six and two boundaries but the spinner had the last laugh off the final ball of the over.

Despite a flurry of wickets that fell in the middle, Australia set Sri Lanka a challenging target of 177, courtesy Steve Smith`s 27-ball 37 not out and a couple of boundaries from Matthew Wade in the death.

Chasing a challenging target, Sri Lanka started with a bang, getting 11 runs off the first over. They kept the scorecard ticking with Danushka Gunathilaka getting in some good shots.

The opening partnership of 25 was broken at the beginning of the fourth over with Josh Hazlewood removing Gunathilaka for 15. However, Charith Asalanka kept up the scoring rate and along with Pathum Nissanka helped bring up Sri Lanka`s fifty with a four on the first ball of the seventh over. His resistance ended when Stoinis got him for 26, breaking the fledgling 42-run stand.

At the halfway mark, Sri Lanka needed 100 more to win. Stoinis got Nissanka in the 11th over and Bhanuka Rajapaksa fell to Ashton Agar two overs later. Hazlewood got Kusal Mendis in the over after that and Jhye Richardson brought the end to Hasaranga`s patchy innings as Sri Lanka slipped to 108/6 in the 16th over. But, Shanaka captain`s knock turned the game on its head.

With 59 needed in the final three overs, the hosts had a tough task ahead of themselves. But Shanaka, refusing to give up, put up a brilliant display of batting, taking the Australia bowlers to the cleaners.

After Chamika Karunaratne gave Shanaka the strike with a single off Hazlewood, the Lanka captain smashed two sixes and two fours in quick succession to the cheers of the crowd. The equation read 37 in 12 balls and Shanaka this time pounced on Jhye Richardson to slam more runs. A six and two fours came in the penultimate over to leave Sri Lanka 19 off the final one to make it home.

Kane Richardson started the last over nervously with two wides, a couple of singles later and with 15 needed off four, Shanka hit back-to-back fours and a six to ease off the pressure, bringing up a superb fifty and ultimately leading the hosts to an exhilarating win.

Brief scores: Australia 176/5 in 20 overs (David Warner 39, Marcus Stoinis 38; Maheesh Theekshana 2/25) lost to Sri Lanka 177/6 in 19.5 overs (Dasun Shanaka 54 not out; Marcus Stoinis 2/8, Josh Hazlewood 2/25) by 4 wickets

1st Test: Sri Lanka secure draw in Bangladesh after Niroshan Dickwella's fighting half-century

Cricket Australia continues to monitor the situation in Sri Lanka but has no plans to change the schedule of the upcoming tour of the island state despite continued violence, the governing body said on Thursday.
Nine people have died and more than 300 have been injured this week in violent street protests against the government of the Indian Ocean nation, which is battling the worst economic crisis in its history.

Australia`s Department of Foreign Affairs and Trade (DFAT) updated its travel advice on Sri Lanka on Wednesday, instructing potential visitors to reconsider their need to travel because of the security situation.
"We are keeping a close eye on developments in Sri Lanka and talking regularly with DFAT and Sri Lanka Cricket," Cricket Australia said on Thursday.

"Our players and support staff have been briefed and will continue to be kept up to date. There are three weeks until the scheduled departure of the squad and at this stage there are no changes to the schedule."
DFAT has also been advising potential visitors to Pakistan to reconsider their need to travel since March, in that case because of "the volatile security situation and high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping and violence".

The Australia test side completed its first cricket tour of Pakistan since 1998 under "presidential-level" security last month. Australia announced three strong squads last month for the tour of Sri Lanka, which includes a Twenty20 series, five one-day internationals as well as two tests in Galle. An Australia "A" team will also play four matches.

There are three weeks until the scheduled departure of the squad and at this stage there are no changes to the schedule." DFAT has also been advising potential visitors to Pakistan to reconsider their need to travel since March, in that case because of "the volatile security situation and high threat of terrorist attack, kidnapping and violence". For Dimuth Karunaratne-led Islanders, it will be a huge challenge to upset the daunting hosts as they remain a solid force at home. The Chandigarh Police is on high alert after two bullet shells were reportedly recovered from a private bus being used to ferry the Sri Lankan cricketers. A number of Sri Lankan players are currently staying in Chandigarh ahead of the first Test of the three-match series between India and Sri Lanka at the PCA Stadium in Mohali. The Test match is scheduled to kick off from March 04.

As per a report in India Today, two bullet shells were recovered from the luggage compartment of the bus which has been ferrying the Sri Lankan players from their hotel to the PCA Stadium in Mohali and back. The bullet shells were recovered on Saturday during a check by the police officials using metal detectors. The bus was parked at the hotel complex at the time of the recovery.

As per the report, the bus was recently hired for a marriage function. It is suspected that the bullet shells could have been left back as celebratory firing during marriages is common in several parts of India, including Punjab. However, police have launched an investigation into the matter and the bus officials were questioned.

No FIR has been registered in the matter so far but the police remain on high alert. More details regarding the case are expected in the coming days. India and Sri Lanka are currently involved in a three-match T20I series which will be followed by two Test matches.
