In pics: Reliving T20 World Cup 2021 as cricketing carnival ends with a bang in UAE

Aaron Finch-led Australia won the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, which was held in the UAE. The 2021 edition was supposed to be held in late 2020 but got postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic worldwide. Hence, the seventh edition took place in the UAE -- for the first time -- after India refrained from hosting the event on their home soil due to the virus scare.

While not many believed Australia were one of the favourites to win the coveted title, having lost their last five bilateral series, the Men in Yellow defied all odds to emerge on top by winning the tournament-finale by eight wickets on Sunday evening (November 14). Aussies locked horns with Kane Williamson-led New Zealand in the summit clash and produced an all-round effort to not give their Trans-Tasmanian rivals any chance whatsoever.

Talking about the 2021 edition's summit clash, played at the Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai, Finch-led Australia won the toss and opted to bowl first. Aussies restricted New Zealand to 172-4, as the Black Caps rode on Kane Williamson's master-class 85. In reply, the Kiwis fell like nine pins as David Warner's 53 and Mitchell marsh's 77 not out propelled Australia to their maiden T20 WC title, eighth ICC title overall.

At the post-match presentation, Finch said, "This is huge. To be the first Australian team to be able to do it. So proud. We knew our backs were against the wall. We had some great individual performances, some great team performances. Can't believe people wrote him off saying he was done (Warner). That's when he plays his best cricket. Was almost like poking the bear. The player of the tournament for me (Zampa). Mitch Marsh - what a way to start his innings today. Wade coming into this game with an injury cloud but got a job done. From India to Australia: A look at T20 WC winners post seventh edition in UAE

Match 29 of the ICC T20 Men's World Cup will see the 2016 runners-up and favourites Eoin Morgan-led England take on the inexperienced Dasun Shanaka-led Sri Lanka in Pool A. While the one-time winners England are coming into this game with a thrashing of Australia, Sri Lanka will feel gutted after having missed out a chance to beat South Africa in a thrilling encounter last week.

Morgan & Co. had started their campaign in the marquee tournament with a loss in their first warm-up game. However, they have stood tall since then and are marching towards the semi-finals, most likely to end up with the top-spot in Pool A after three back-to-back wins. On the other hand, Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by 5 wickets in a tense-chase in their opening fixture in the main draw, however, their inexperience and rustiness got exposed versus Australia and South Africa.

Given that another win will confirm their semi-final qualification, England will come hard against the Lankans. On the other hand, Sri Lanka are more used to conditions in Sharjah, having already played three games, and also can pose some threat to the English line-up if they win the toss and opt to bowl first. For the unversed, England haven't batted first and set a target in Super 12 so far.

Match prediction for England-Sri Lanka T20 WC encounter: The pitch at Sharjah has been favouring the spinners due to its low bounce. While there hasn't been much turn on display, expect another 140-150-plus total on cards. While England will like to go hard if they chase a modest target, it will be interesting to see how they approach with the ball in the second-half (if the situation arise).

England are overwhelming favourites. Though one cannot rule out Sri Lanka's tendency to surprise any opposition on their day, they will have to be on their toes to beat Morgan & Co.

ENG vs SL, T20 World Cup 2021 prediction: Who will win today's match between England and Sri Lanka?

South Africa will take on Sri Lanka in match no. 25 of the ongoing ICC T20 World Cup 2021 on Saturday (October 30). Both teams have so far recorded a win and a loss in their first two matches in the showpiece event. Both South Africa and Sri Lanka lost their respective opening matches before bouncing back to win their second game.

South Africa got the better of West Indies in their previous encounter to keep their top-four hopes alive while Sri Lanka defeated Bangladesh by five wickets. Quinton de Kock pulling out of the game against West Indies after refusing to take a knee to extend support for the Black Lives Matter (BLM) movement become the biggest talking point from South Africa's win against Windies.

However, De Kock has since issued a statement explaining his side and apologising for not taking a stand against racism. He has also made himself available for the remainder of matches for South Africa. De Kock remains one of the best batters in South Africa's line-up and his return will be a huge boost for the Temba Bavuma-led side.

While their bowlers failed to impress against Bangladesh, Sri Lanka batters produced a clinical show to chase down the target of 172 runs with seven balls to spare in Sharjah in their last game. Charit Asalanka slammed a brilliant unbeaten 80 off just 49 balls while young Bhanuka Rajapaksa scored a 3-ball 53 to take their side home comfortably.

For South Africa, Dwaine Pretorius and Keshav Maharaj shone with the ball to pick up five wickets between them while Rassie van der Dussen (43) and Aiden Markram (51) impressed with the bat to help them attain their first win in the tournament.

Australia and Sri Lanka will lock horns with each other in match 22 of the T20 World Cup 2021 edition, on Thursday evening (October 28). The match will be played at the iconic Dubai International Cricket Stadium as both sides will look to make it two wins in a row after their hard-fought victories in their respective Super 12 opening games.

While Aaron Finch-led Australia restricted South Africa for a paltry 118-9 in 20 overs, with Mitchell Starc, Adam Zampa and Josh Hazlewood chipping in with two wickets apiece, their batters got starts but lost wickets at regular intervals in their run-chase versus the Proteas. Steve Smith's 35 and other vital contributions from Marcus Stoinis and Matthew Wade completed the run-chase for the Men in Yellow, with 5 wickets in hand in the final over.

Sri Lanka, on the other hand, had a tough encounter versus Bangladesh on Sunday afternoon (October 24) at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah. While their bowlers did err with their line and lengths as the Bangla Tigers posted 171-4, Charith Asalanka's 80 not out and Bhanuka Rajapaksa's 53 took the Lankans to an emphatic 5-wicket win, despite being at 79-4 at one stage.

Match prediction for Australia-Sri Lanka T20 WC encounter: The pitch at Dubai has something for the pacers, spinners as well as the batters. Meanwhile, the larger boundaries also gives plenty of temptation to the spinners to flight the ball whereas running between wickets becomes very important on such grounds. Expect a good and intense game, with scores being around 160-175. It is tough to predict a winner as both sides have had equal success versus each other (8-8 in head-to-head tally) but Aussies lead the Islanders 2-1 in T20 WC history. This will be their first face-off in the tournament-history since the 2010 edition.

Lasith Malinga has announced his retirement from cricket on Tuesday (September 14). The veteran pacer announced his retirement from the shortest format of the game and can easily be regarded as one of the finest death-bowlers in world cricket.

For the unversed, Malinga had called it quits from Test cricket in 2011. He was never that effective in whites but remained an integral part of the limited-overs squad for Sri Lanka and Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI), in the IPL, with his consistent and significant performances. The Islander had also retired from ODI cricket after the Islanders' campaign ended in the 2019 ODI World Cup, in England and Wales.

Confirming his decision through his official YouTube channel, the 38-year-old expressed gratitude to Sri Lanka Cricket (SLC) and also thanked his franchise teams including the likes of Mumbai Indians, Melbourne Stars, and Kent Cricket Club.

× "The experience that I have gained through the past 17 years will no longer be needed in the field since I have decided to retire from T20I Cricket marking my retirement from all formats of cricket. But I will be continuously supporting the younger generations who thrives to uplift the spirit of the game and I will always be there with all who love the game," Malinga wrote. Malinga's career was filled with several high-points, including a plethora of hat-tricks in shorter formats. In 30 Tests, he accounted for 101 wickets whereas picked up 338 and 107 scalps in ODIs and T20Is, respectively.

South Africa's veteran leg-spinner Imran Tahir conceded only five runs in a decisive super over as they beat Sri Lanka in their opening Twenty20 International on Tuesday after both teams had finished their innings with the same score.

After sending the tourists into bat, the home side restricted Sri Lanka to 134 for seven in their 20 overs, but then blew a commanding position to end with same total, leaving the Newlands encounter to be decided by a one-over eliminator.

David Miller helped South Africa blast 14 runs from their super over, before the wily Tahir restricted Sri Lanka to only five in reply, two of which were wides.

South Africa looked odds-on for victory when they reached 118 for three in their innings, needing 17 runs from 22 balls, but a flurry of late wickets left them needing two off the last delivery with Tahir on strike.

He missed the ball from seamer Isuru Udana, but partner Dale Steyn scrambled through for a single as Sri Lanka wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella botched a simple run out to win the game for his side.

Miller had earlier struck a quickfire 41 off 23 balls and put on 66 for the fourth wicket with Rassie van der Dussen (34) as the pair steadied the innings after the home side had lost three early wickets.

But Sri Lanka captain Lasith Malinga took the game into the final over with a superb spell of bowling, ending with figures of 2-11 in four overs.

Kamindu Mendis top-scored for visitors in their innings, blazing 41 off 29 balls before he was stumped by stand-in wicketkeeper Miller off the bowling of the impressive Tahir.

Miller was handed the gloves as South Africa seek a back-up option to Quinton de Kock at the World Cup in England and Wales, with the former passing his audition with some neat work behind the stumps.

The second match in the series will be played in Pretoria on Friday, before concluding on Sunday in Johannesburg.

Australia finally have the chance to bring some cheers to their fans after an egregious 2018 when Tim Paine's men take on Sri Lanka at the Manuka Oval from Friday with a series victory beckoning the beleaguered hosts.

The 4-0 Ashes victory in 2017-18 seems like a distant past for an Australian side who have since been beaten away by South Africa and Pakistan and lost their first ever home series to India earlier this month.

The tumultuous trip to South Africa not only resulted in a 3-1 drubbing for Australia, but they also lost their two best batsmen in captain Steve Smith and his deputy David Warner due to a ball-tampering scandal.

Australia beat Sri Lanka by an innings and 40 runs in Brisbane for only their second test victory of the summer and the hosts are determined not to take their foot off the pedal in the second and final test.

"We had a great game in Brisbane but I think we can get better," Australia spinner Nathan Lyon told reporters on Wednesday.

"We know Sri Lanka is going to come back hard, they are a classy outfit, a well-drilled outfit. We are expecting them to come back hard."

Sri Lanka have lost all-rounder Angelo Mathews and paceman Nuwan Pradeep through injuries even before the first test and their bid to level the series has been jolted with fast bowlers Lahiru Kumara and Dushmantha Chameera also joining them in the sidelines.

Sri Lanka have called up 22-year-old paceman Chamika Karunaratne but their pace attack has already been robbed of much of its firepower.

The tourists also faced off-field issues ahead of the second test after coach Chandika Hathurusingha was dropped from the selection panel while batting coach Jon Lewis has left for home to attend a family matter.

Lyon said the hosts were happy with their preparation as they head into the clash at Manuka Oval, which is making its debut as a test venue.

"It's an exciting group, there's lot of intensity at training. Our preparation for every test this summer has been outstanding," said Lyon, who spent four years from 2006-2010 at the venue as a curator.

"Obviously India outplayed us. But we knew coming up to Brisbane, if we had our solid preparation, ticked all the boxes that we can control then hopefully we will get the result.

"We were very fortunate we had Pat Cummins in our side and he played an absolute exceptional role out there. We are very satisfied with our preparation."

All the Indian batsmen contributed with openers Yashasvi Jaiswal (85 off 113 balls) and Anuj Rawat (57 off 79 balls) creating solid foundation with a 121-run stand.

However, the highlight of the Indian innings was Badoni's blistering unbeaten knock of 52 off 28 balls which included five sixes and two fours. Along with skipper Prabh Simran (65 no off 37 balls), Badoni added 110 runs in 9.1 overs to literally bat Sri Lanka out of the match.

The island nation were never in the chase as they were all out for 160 in 38.4 overs losing wickets at regular intervals with left-arm spinner Harsh Tyagi's registering brilliant figures of 6 for 38 in 10 overs.

He flighted a few and fired a few down the channel in what was his best performance at the U-19 level till date.

India did have one tough match against Bangladesh in the semi-final which they won by two runs.

"I couldn't play today but I am very happy that my team won," India's regular captain Pavan Shah said in company of his deputy and stand-in skipper Prabh Simran.

Man of the match Tyagi, who bowled a disciplined line said: "The instruction was to bowl at one spot after doing a video analysis of the Sri Lanka team. The wicket also assisted the spinners."

It was left-hander Jaiswal, who hit some flowing drives including a pulled six over deep mid-wicket off left-arm spinner Dushith Wellalage.

For his consistency (318 runs in the tournament), Jaiswal was adjudged man-of-the-tournament.

The Lankans used five spinners -- three off-breaks and two left-arm spinners but all of them were slow through the air giving batsmen enough time to go on the back-foot.

Indian batting's most entertaining part was the death overs when Badoni and Prabh Simran brutally assaulted the opposition spinners.

In an over from left-arm spinner Shashika Dulshan, Badoni hit four sixes with a couple of them landing in stands.

A product of Delhi's famous Sonnet Club, his technique against spinners was impressive and like his 'senior' Rishabh Pant, he loves the slog hit over cow corner.

India's U-19 team Sunday followed the footsteps of their seniors to win the U-19 Asia Cup title with a crushing 144-run win against Sri Lanka in the final with Delhi boys Ayush Badoni and Harsh Tyagi playing prominent roles.
