Thirimanne was&nbsp;believed to have been on pilgrimage with his family when the car he was travelling in, crashed into a lorry, coming from the opposite direction.&nbsp;

A picture of Thirmanne's black vehicle completely wrecked from the front has surfaced on social media. The extent and exact nature of his injuries remain&nbsp;unknown at this stage.

The 34-year-old met with the accident while he is currently involved in the&nbsp;Legends Cricket tournament in Pallekele where he is representing the New York Superstar Strikers.

After the accident, the franchise released a statement, confirming he had indeed been admitted to a hospital.&nbsp;

"We wish to inform you that Lahiru Thirimanne and his family were involved in a small car accident while visiting the temple. Thankfully, they have been admitted to the hospital for observation," the New York Strikers said.&nbsp;

Sri Lanka selectors bank on recalled wicketkeeper Niroshan Dickwella's 'experience' in upcoming T20 World Cup

Sri Lanka on Friday (Mar 1) cancelled the contract with a Chinese firm and awarded the construction of three solar and wind hybrid power generation facilities to an Indian company.

The project was initially funded by an Asian Development Bank (ADB) loan; however, it is now backed by an $11 million Indian government grant. The contract with the Chinese company was temporarily scrapped two years ago the after Indian government raised concerns.

India has over the past few years grown skeptical of growing Chinese involvement in its neighbour states, a trend it has sought to counter with its own initiatives.

Indian company U-Solar, based out of Bengaluru, will now be taking over the contract. India's assistance "underscored the significance New Delhi attached to bilateral energy partnership", the Indian embassy said in a statement.

The three facilities will have a combined 2,230 kilowatts of renewable energy capacity and be located on islets near the northern city of Jaffna, not far from India's southern coast.

“The hybrid project combines various forms of energy including both solar and wind, towards optimising capacities,” a press release from the Indian High Commission in Colombo said.

The energy project is the third Indian-backed major project in Sri Lanka. While the National Thermal Power Corporation is spearheading a solar venture in the eastern Sampur town, the Adani Group is setting up renewable energy projects in Mannar and Pooneryn in the north.

A plane of Sri Lanka's national airline was recently grounded for three days. On Tuesday, the airline blamed a rat for the grounding and the subsequent catastrophic delays.

Amid concerns that the rodent may have chewed through components on the plane, the plane was grounded for three days at Colombo.&nbsp;

The rat was spotted during last Thursday's (Feb 22) Sri Lankan Airlines Airbus A330 trip from the Pakistani city of Lahore.&nbsp;

Afterwards, a search was launched for the rat, as the airlines made sure none of the components aboard the aircraft were harmed.

The rat was eventually found dead, and the plane has now resumed flights. However, as per media reports, a spokesperson for the airline said the entire schedule was affected.&nbsp;

"The aircraft was grounded for three days at Colombo," said the airline official.

"The plane could not be flown without making sure that the rat was accounted for. It was found dead."

As per a Daily Mirror report, two aircraft were delayed after rats were found aboard them.&nbsp;

"We had to spray a chemical in two aircraft in which rats were found and grounded them for one day as per the international standards," said SriLankan Airlines Chairman Ashok Pathirage on Sunday (Feb 25) during a discussion at Ports, Shipping, and Aviation Ministry.

<h2>Sri Lanka Airlines debts and concerns</h2>

As per reports, towards the end of March 2023, the cash-strapped airlines had incurred more than $1.8 billion in losses.

Three planes out of the state-owned airlines 23 aircraft fleet have already been grounded for more than a year.

There are also concerns that the cash-strapped Sr Lanka Airlines may lose investors.

Talking to reporters, Sri Lanka Aviation Minister Nimal Siripala de Silva said that the rogue rodent could deter "the few investors" who were considering buying the indebted airline.

Afterwards, a search was launched for the rat, as the airlines made sure none of the components aboard the aircraft were harmed. However, as per media reports, a spokesperson for the airline said the entire schedule was affected. "The aircraft was grounded for three days at Colombo," said the airline official. "The plane could not be flown without making sure that the rat was accounted for. It was found dead." As per a Daily Mirror report, two aircraft were delayed after rats were found aboard them. Balasuriya weighed in on several issues ranging from the India-Lanka relationship, Colombo's ties with China, tourism, Unified Payments Interface (UPI), and more. While speaking on China, Balasuriya said that "both countries are friends", but in India's case it's a "civilisational link", while pointing out the historical connection of the two cultures. Here's the full interview: WION: How do you see the India-Sri Lanka relationship, especially in the light of financial connectivity? We saw recently the launch of UPI in your country. Tharaka Balasuriya: I think India and Sri Lanka's relationship is at an all-time high. The UPI [Unified Payments Interface] is beneficial for both countries. If you look at the events of Sri Lanka and what took place one and a half years ago, it mainly started out as a foreign exchange crisis mainly a lack of dollars. So we have to ensure that our dollar dependency is reduced. Now for example, our biggest tourist market is from India and if we can collect the tourist remittance from India and we import about $5.5 billion worth of goods from India and use those... pay in Indian rupees for the Indian imports, then we will reduce our dollar dependency. And it also becomes very flexible and very easy for the Indians to travel to Sri Lanka and then they pay in Indian rupees. WION: We recently saw the Indian external affairs minister saying that one should go to Sri Lanka. How do you see that comment and how do you see Sri Lanka as a tourist destination for many Indians? Tharaka Balasuriya: Your external affairs minister is absolutely correct because Sri Lanka is a country with an area of over 65,000 square kilometres, but it has something for everybody. It's no wonder Marco Polo said it's the best island of its size in the world. We have some of the best beaches in the world. We have the hill country which is very cool in temperature and we have wildlife and wildlife parks. For example, the Yala National Park has the highest concentration of leopards in the world. We have the historical the cultural triangle...we also are trying to develop the Ramayana trail. We have five Shiva Lingam temples in Sri Lanka. And also Sri Lanka is in close proximity to India. So the maps when you look at, the ticket prices for somebody in the north of India to travel to the southern city, and for that person to travel to Sri Lanka, I don't think there'll be much of a cost difference. So I would encourage all Indians to visit Sri Lanka and it will be absolutely a brilliant experience. WION: There is the China factor as well when it comes to the India-Sri Lanka relationship and the Sri Lanka-China relationship. Is it an act of balancing or is India your natural ally? Tharaka Balasuriya: When you say it's our natural ally, I think that has an implication saying other countries [are] our enemy or something. No, it's not like that. You know, both countries are friends, but in India's case, it's a civilisational link. If you read the books, the people of Sri Lanka came from India. Sri Lanka is a Buddhist country, and Buddhism came from India. So it is a much stronger big brother-small brother relationship with India and Sri Lanka. China is an important trading partner. But so are other countries. So if you look at most of our exports, they go to Europe and they go to the United States. And they are also very important trading partners. And I think the look at the quantum of the volume of trade, which India does with China...ours is minuscule. Sri Lanka is a small country. We don't have... huge international political ambitions but [what] we want to do is trade with all countries and ensure that...the people of Sri Lanka will benefit.

When the deal was agreed upon in December 2021, Tehran said it had agreed to accept a monthly shipment of Ceylon tea from Sri Lanka in exchange for settling a $251 million debt from Iranian oil supplied to the island nation nine years ago.&nbsp;

However, Sri Lanka was hit by an economic crisis forcing then-president Gotabaya Rajapaksa to step down in July 2022. This led to a years-long delay in the shipment of the tea to Iran.&nbsp;

Colombo defaulted on its $46 billion foreign debt in April 2022 but managed to secure a $2.9 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund (IMF), early last year.&nbsp;

<h2>Does the deal violate sanctions against Iran?</h2>

The asylum seekers reportedly consist of Tamils from Sri Lanka. They have reportedly faced violence, abuse, and arbitrary detention during the last two years.

The UN inspection, sanctioned by the Supreme Court of British Indian Ocean Territory (BIOT), revealed that the asylum seekers, under the "effective control" of the UK government, were subjected to conditions of "arbitrary detention". The UN said that these individuals must be moved promptly.&nbsp;

The damning UN report highlighted accusations of sexual harassment and abuse against women and children within the asylum-seeking&nbsp;group, along with increased levels of mental distress and conditions akin to abetment of suicide.&nbsp;

Of particular concern, the detention of 16 children among the 61 was labelled as "particularly troubling," prompting a call for their transfer to the UK if found in need of international protection.

<h2>How asylum seekers are being kept in detention?</h2>

The asylum seekers are confined to a fenced-in area equivalent to a football pitch, guarded by G4S staff.

The G4S is a UK-based private security and facility services company.

The asylum seekers are not allowed to cook for themselves and have suffered rat bites, as the rodents, described as "ubiquitous" on the island, gnaw holes in their tents.

Asylum-seeking Sri Lankan Tamils stuck on British island for two years face abuse, violence: UN report

Sri Lanka T20I skipper Wanindu Hasaranga says that his team is one of top bowling sides in the world. "In terms of bowlers we have quite a few options, so when we come to playing on good tracks - especially T20s - we need to see exactly how to bowl. We've bowled on good wickets before, so I think in T20s it's from the bowlers that you're going to win matches.

"The types of wickets we're going to play on at the World Cup, there's a good chance we'll play on similar wickets during these next six games. With that we'll be aiming to figure out how we can win a game with our combination of bowlers," said Hasaranga.

The two sides also played a three-match ODI series which Sri Lanka won 3-0 prior to the T20I series. Sri Lanka are going through a transition period for a long time now but have started coming together.

They had reached the Asia Cup 2023 final and played some good cricket in patches at the ODI World Cup 2023. The T20 format is, however, the one which suits their strength the most.&nbsp;

His comments came on the eve of the first T20I of the three-match between Sri Lanka and Afghanistan. Both the sides will be playing six T20Is each before the T20 World Cup in June later this year and the current series will comprise three of their six matches. The T20 series kicks off on Saturday (Feb 17). "If you look at world cricket, we're one of the best teams in terms of bowling outfits. If you look at the rankings, myself and Maheesh [Theekshana] are in the top 10. Dushmantha Chameera was unlucky with his injury, otherwise he'd also be here. But in his place we have Binura [Fernando] who has come in, and there's also Matheesha [Pathirana] and Nuwan Thushara. We know how good those two are. Dilshan Madushanka is also there. We've bowled on good wickets before, so I think in T20s it's from the bowlers that you're going to win matches. "The types of wickets we're going to play on at the World Cup, there's a good chance we'll play on similar wickets during these next six games. With that we'll be aiming to figure out how we can win a game with our combination of bowlers," said Hasaranga. The two sides also played a three-match ODI series which Sri Lanka won 3-0 prior to the T20I series. Sri Lanka are going through a transition period for a long time now but have started coming together. They had reached the Asia Cup 2023 final and played some good cricket in patches at the ODI World Cup 2023. The T20 format is, however, the one which suits their strength the most.
