Indian pacer Mohammed Shami has hit back at former Pakistan cricketer Hasan Raza for his bizarre comments that recently went viral on social media. Shami took to his Instagram handle to post a message where he called out Raza and suggested him to focus on the matches, instead of inane talk.

Raza during one of the TV programmes alleged that India were being provided with a different set of balls by the ICC and BCCI which allowed them to better utilise the conditions than anyone else at the ongoing ODI World Cup 20233.

"Please have some shame. Focus on the game rather than talking rubbish. For a change, enjoy other's success," said Shami on his Instagram handle in Hindi.

"This is the ICC Cricket World Cup, not a local tournament. Wasim Akram explained, but still, hahahaha. You do not trust your own Wasim Akram. This person is busy praising himself," he added.

What did Raza say?

After Indian dismantled the Sri Lankan side on a paltry total of 55 to complete a 302-run demolition job, Raza came up with his dubious theory.

“The way Siraj and Shami were swinging the ball, it seemed like the ICC or the BCCI were giving them different and suspicious balls in the second innings. There needs to be an inspection done on the ball. There could also be an extra layer of coating on the ball for swing," Raza said.

Apart from questioning the balls, Raza has also alleged that BCCI was rigging the Decision Review System (DRS) to get calls in Team India's favour.

“Jadeja picked up five wickets and finished with career-best figures. We were talking about technology where DRS was being taken. Van de Dussen was the batter and the ball was hitting the middle stump after pitching on leg stump. How is that possible?" Raza was heard as saying.

Also read | India are manipulating DRS in ODI WC: Ex-Pak player makes another ABSURD claim after hosts thrash SA

However, the netizens and even former Pakistan cricketers tore into Raza for his ludicrous statements. Asked about Raza's absurd allegations, Pakistan great Wasim Akram said he wanted the "same thing" that Raza was having.

"I've been reading about this for the last two days. I want to have the same thing these guys are having, sounds like fun. Mind is not there. You are not only embarrassing yourself but us too," said Akram adding that these people (Raza and the panel) had clearly lost their minds.

India have played eight league games so far in the tournament and have won all eight in a comprehensive manner, whilst qualifying for the knockouts. Meanwhile, Pakistan have suffered a string of defeats and currently rely on other results to go their way to stand a chance to qualify for top-4.

World Cup 2023: 'Have some shame...', Mohammed Shami blasts former Pakistan cricketer for absurd claims

India has booked their place in the semifinals of the ODI World Cup as the Men in Blue are thrashing opponents left, right, and centre. While Rohit Sharma’s men look ruthless with their approach, a certain section of fans is worried about whether the Indian team could fumble at the wrong stage. With the semifinals fast approaching, the fear is will there be a repeat of the 2019 and 2022 World Cups where India faced elimination despite dominating the initial stage. So to discuss more, Gautam Sodhi joins Aditya Pimpale for this latest edition of the World Cup podcast.

Indian captain Rohit Sharma was a proud man after his team decimated South Africa by 243 runs at the Eden Gardens on Sunday (Nov 5) evening to retain the top spot in the World Cup points table. Sharma said the pitch wasn't easy to bat on despite the start provided by him and the team needed someone like Virat Kohli to bat through.

Speaking at the post-match ceremony, Sharma highlighted the importance of Kohli who smashed his 49th ODI century to equal Sachin Tendulkar's long-standing record.

"It wasn't an easy pitch today, you needed someone like Kohli to bat the situation. Not to forget Shreyas Iyer as well, creating that partnership for us and getting the runs on the board," said Sharma.

"We knew we had the runs on the board, it was time to keep the ball in the right areas, which we did," he added.

The Indian skipper also applauded Ravindra Jadeja for his all-round performance with bat and ball. Jadeja played a 15-ball 29-run cameo at the back end of the innings which allowed India to post an above-par total of 326 before turning up with the ball and picking a fifer.

"He's been really good, a big match-winner for us, playing in all three formats for many years now. He keeps doing the job done for us, but goes under the radar, but today was a classic case of what Jadeja is for us."

"We know what the narrative is out there about us and chasing. We didn't do that any justice. We have our conversations as a batting group, we've got to look at the things that didn't go right," said Bavuma.

The South African captain attributed the first 10 overs with the ball where Sharma and Gill feasted as the turning point of the match.

"That did make it a bit of a challenge. They got 90 in the first ten and only (lost) two wickets."

After the win, India are also set to finish the group stage at the top and will meet the team that finishes in the fourth position in the first semifinal at the Wankhede Stadium in Mumbai on November 15. Prior to that, India's final league game is scheduled against Netherlands and the team management might look to alter the composition before the big knockout.

All-rounder Keshav Maharaj is looking at the silver lining after South Africa were humbled by a dominant India during the World Cup match at Eden Gardens in Kolkata on Sunday (Nov 5).

Speaking after the game, Maharaj said the loss was a 'blessing in disguise' for the team ahead of the crucial knockout stage.

"It's probably a good thing and a blessing in disguise for this team to make sure that we iron out our glitches. It's just a good eye-opener for us," the spinner said.

Maharaj was of the view that the law of averages had caught up with the Proteas after they had put up a string of consistent performances.

"We played four good games on the bounce, so naturally there's one game that would go wrong, not to make excuses for the performance today, but I think it's a good idea and indication of what we need to do better going forward in this tournament, obviously building up towards that semifinal," Maharaj said.

"It's about making sure that we're practicing in the next couple of games going forward into the semi-final and rectifying it sooner rather than later," he added.

After their dismissal, India's mainstay at no. 3, Virat Kohli took charge and saw the innings through by smashing a record-equalling 49th ODI ton. In the end, India finished with a challenging 326-run total on a pitch that was slightly double-paced and lacked true bounce.

During the chase, none of the South African batters could turn up as the likes of Ravindra Jadeja and Mohammed Shami ripped through them. The Proteas were bundled out for 83 in 28 overs as India won the contest by 243 runs to retain the top-of-the-table position.

While the defeat was demoralising, it does not do a whole lot of damage to South Africa's chances in the World Cup. The team will play its final league game against Afghanistan before returning to Eden Gardens for the second semifinal against the team that finishes third on the points table.

World Cup 2023: Keshav Maharaj calls South Africa's loss against India a 'blessing in disguise'

Sri Lanka men's cricket team cancelled their training session in Delhi on Saturday (Nov 4) ahead of their World Cup match against Bangladesh at the Arun Jaitley Stadium. The team followed advice from the doctors who said it was not healthy to practice outdoors due to the severe pollution currently engulfing the national capital, according to an ESPNCricinfo report.

The Sri Lankan team is scheduled to square up against subcontinent rivals Bangladesh on Monday (Nov 6) but the pollution in Delhi may prove a major hindrance in the match going ahead. The air quality index (AQI) for the capital has been consistently above 400 for the last few days and is expected to stay that way till Tuesday next week.

The Sri Lankan team's cancellation of its practice session comes a day after the Bangladesh cricket team also did the same.

"Due to worsening conditions, we didn't take the chance. We have two more training days. Some of us developed coughing, so there's a risk factor. We don't want to get sick," said Bangladesh team director Khaled Mahmud.

Notably, the Bangladesh team has another practice session scheduled at 6 pm on Saturday but given the pollution, it appears highly unlikely that it will go ahead.

"We don't know if things will improve, but we have training tomorrow. We want all the players to be fit for the important game coming up on November 6," added Mahmud.

According to reports, come the matchday, the officials will treat air pollution just as they would other weather condition. Meaning, the play could be called off if the conditions are not fit to play and players' health is under jeopardy.

Sri Lanka were bundled out on a meagre total of 55 whilst chasing a 358-run target. Thus, if the match is cancelled in the extreme case, it won't do a whole lot of damage to either team's chances at the World Cup. However, with a spot in the 2025 Champions Trophy on the line, both teams would hope for the play to go ahead.

Female athletes continue to be objectified in sports even in 2023, while this behaviour is harmful and institutionalized, more importantly, it needs to stop. In the latest, a US-based United Airlines showed a preference for flight attendants with specific features and age groups on charter flights serving professional and college sports teams. According to the attendants, their airlines laid them off for the Los Angeles Dodgers’ baseball team because the players prefer a "certain look" of "white, young, thin women who are predominately blond and blue-eyed."

Cricket Association of Bengal (CAB) is planning to pull all stops to celebrate Indian cricketer Virat Kohli's 35th birthday at the iconic Eden Gardens next week. CAB is planning to distribute approximately 70,000 Kohli masks among the spectators when India take on South Africa at the stadium on November 5, which coincides with Kohli's birthday.

The CAB currently headed by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly's brother, Snehasish Ganguly, has come up with a plan to mark the Indian batter's birthday, pending approval from ICC, according to a PTI report

"We want every fan in the stadium wearing Kohli masks as he walks in. We plan to distribute about 70,000 masks on that day," CAB president Snehasish Ganguly told reporters.

“We also plan to host a fireworks show during the mid-innings interval for Virat and the crowd. The CAB currently headed by former Indian captain Sourav Ganguly's brother, Snehasish Ganguly, has come up with a plan to mark the Indian batter's birthday, pending approval from ICC, according to a PTI report "We want every fan in the stadium wearing Kohli masks as he walks in. We plan to distribute about 70,000 masks on that day," CAB president Snehasish Ganguly told reporters. “We also plan to host a fireworks show during the mid-innings interval for Virat and the crowd. It will be our way of celebrating his birthday, and our way of saying that the entire Kolkata crowd are part of the celebrations. We are sure of a full house and everyone in the stands is a Virat fan. It is a gesture on behalf of all of them,” Snehasish added. Is it the beginning of the end for English Cricket’s golden generation after their latest defeat to India in the ODI World Cup on Sunday? World Cup 2023: 'Couldn’t get your breath...', Joe Root says England players struggled with Mumbai poor air

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has slammed Babar Azam for his insipid captaincy during the loss against arch-rivals Afghanistan in the World Cup encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Pakistan lost the game despite posting a challenging target of 283 with a handy 74-run contribution coming from Babar. During the defence, Babar looked devoid of ideas as the field placements allowed Afghan batters to bat themselves into form and eventually coast to a historic victory.

"It is the captain's job to apply pressure, a pacer is bowling and there is no slip? Four are required on 12 balls and you've taken backward point? Apply pressure. What do the Australians do? They take one to two wickets and then put all of their players in the circle to apply pressure, like they did against Pakistan,” Shahid Afridi was quoted as saying by a local sports show.

The former Pakistan captain said if an individual was the captain of the national team, they needed to take both praise and criticism in their stride.

"Captaining your national side is a matter of honour, but it is not a bed of roses. When you do good, everyone praises you and when you don't, everyone blames you as well as the head coach," Afridi added.

Afridi said the men-in-green were guilty of 'waiting for miracles in the field' as they were not thinking positively.

Former Pakistan all-rounder Shahid Afridi has slammed Babar Azam for his insipid captaincy during the loss against arch-rivals Afghanistan in the World Cup encounter at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai.

Former Pakistan cricketer Wasim Akram has played down the controversy surrounding the wide ball that was not declared by umpire Richard Kettleborough during the World Cup match between India and Bangladesh.

Akram called the controversy a needless one as it was a genuine mistake, with people having 'nothing to do' making a big fuss out of it.

“Looks like one of those genuine mistakes [by the umpire]. It was a wide ball for sure. [On the controversy] This is for people who have nothing to do, who live off this cr*p and then they can go nuts with it," said Akram during a discussion on A Sports.

During the closing stages of the match, Indian no. 3 Virat Kohli was gunning for his 48th ODI century. With two runs required, Kohli was on 97 and required a boundary to get to the milestone. However, left-arm off-spinner Nasum Ahmed, bowling the 42nd over, darted one down the leg, which, in most cases, would have been declared a wide.

Kohli, who anticipated a wide, gave a disgusted look to the bowler but umpire Richard Kettleborough remained unmoved. The English umpire suggested that since Kohli had moved slightly inside the stumps, the ball wasn't eligible to be called wide.

According to an amendment in MCC Law 22.1 in 2022, a wide should be evaluated on the basis of the position of the batter, the location of the striker at any point since the bowler started their run-up, and whether the ball would have passed wide of the striker in a typical batting stance.

However, controversy soon erupted on social media, where netizens believed that Kettleborough didn't give the wide to curtail the rather 'unsportsmanlike' habit of cricketers to dart wides at the end of innings to stop batters from reaching milestones.

Australia batter David Warner has expressed his frustration after he did not get a decision in his favour during one of the World Cup games. Warner said he wished to see the stats of an umpire on the scoreboard screen, akin to NRL and NFL.

Warner was adjudged LBW during Australia's last outing against Sri Lanka. On-field umpire Joel Wilson gave the decision against him and Warner opted to go upstairs, hoping for a reversal. However, the Decision Review System (DRS) returned 'umpire's call' on both pitching and the wickets hitting metrics, which led to an angry outburst from Warner.

"Players’ stats go up on the board as you walk out to bat. When they announce the umpires, I’d love to see their stats come up on the board as well. The NRL does it. I think the NFL does it," said Warner.

The Australian opener said it was about knowing beforehand which umpires gave the 50-50 decisions.

"It’s a great thing for the spectators to see as well. You definitely know which umpires are going to give those 50-50 ones when it hits the pad, and that’s where from my perspective it gets frustrating," he said.

"There’s no bias in anything. It’s just that you feel that as a player sometimes. There has to be some accountability. If you get a decision wrong, just accept it and apologise. Players aren’t going to bite your head off. Umpires aren’t going to bite your head off if you ask them the question. They’re generally pretty honest," Warner added.

DRS under scanner

Apart from on-field umpiring, DRS has also come under scanner after giving some suspicious calls. During Australia's second league encounter against South Africa, Steve Smith suffered at the hands of DRS after the on-field decision was reversed.

Smith was hit on the pads but the ball seemingly was drifting down the leg which prompted umpire Joel Wilson to give a not-out call. However, the South Africans went upstairs and DRS showed the ball was hitting the leg stump. The call shocked Smith, Wilson as well as the fans who questioned the accuracy of the system.

A few days later, during the India vs Pakistan contest, Muhammad Rizwan was hit on the pads on a similar length. However, this time, the DRS showed that the ball was missing the stumps, leading to similar online chatter about the inaccuracies surrounding DRS.

Ronaldo has played a pivotal part in the Portugal side securing a spot in the Euro 2024 relatively early. During the ongoing international break, he has scored three goals, one against Slovakia and two against Bosnia & Herzegovina - taking his national career goal tally to 127.

Prior to the match, Ronaldo had talked about setting small goals at the end of the career, especially if he is to play beyond the Euros and achieve 1,000 career goals.

“Things have happened in my life, both on a personal and professional level, that make me think more in the short term nowadays. People say I’m going to play on until I’m 40 or 41 years old. I don’t set these targets. It’s a question of just enjoying the moment, which is a good moment. I feel good," said Ronaldo.

Ronaldo enjoying his football with the national team comes after a turbulent time during former manager Fernando Santos' tenure. During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, Ronaldo was routinely benched by Santos as the Portuguese team made a timid quarterfinal exit at the marquee event.

France international Jean-Clair Todibo on Monday (Oct 16) apologised for laughing during a minute's silence in memory of the victims of the Israel-Hamas conflict and a murdered French teacher before a Euro 2024 qualifier last week.

"I had a nervous laugh in relation to this minute of silence but in no case did I make fun of the current situation," the 23-year-old Nice defender told journalists.

Cameras caught Todibo laughing during the tribute, which took before France's 2-1 win over the Netherlands in Amsterdam last week, to the victims of the conflict between Hamas and Israel.

The minute's silence also remembered a teacher killed last week in the northern French city of Arras in what the government called an Islamist terror attack.

"The context was unusual, we were among rival fans who had made certain jokes and I had this nervous laugh that came out. I wanted to apologise to all the people who I could have offended, that's the least I can do. Let there be no mistake about that."

"Some said that I laughed during this minute of silence because I was making fun of the death of a teacher, you should know that my mother has worked in National Education for 20 years and I have enormous respect for these people.

"This could have happened to my mother. It bothers me because it reflects an image which is not mine.

"I think I'm a boy with a very good education and with respect for people."

Before Todibo's apology, the national ethics council of the French Football Federation had sent a letter to the player to ask him to explain himself, reserving the right to refer the matter to the FFF disciplinary committee.

Watch | Israel-Palestine war: Hamas commanders are training teenagers for battle × Todibo, who is in the France team for Tuesday's friendly match against Scotland in Lille, said he had never intended to offend. "I wanted to express myself today in relation to the extent of the situation and the interpretation of the situation which is quite crazy," he said before France's press conference in Lille. "The context was unusual, we were among rival fans who had made certain jokes and I had this nervous laugh that came out. I wanted to apologise to all the people who I could have offended, that's the least I can do. Let there be no mistake about that." "I'm hurt because it taints the education that my mother gave me," he continued. "Some said that I laughed during this minute of silence because I was making fun of the death of a teacher, you should know that my mother has worked in National Education for 20 years and I have enormous respect for these people. "This could have happened to my mother. It bothers me because it reflects an image which is not mine. "I think I'm a boy with a very good education and with respect for people." Before Todibo's apology, the national ethics council of the French Football Federation had sent a letter to the player to ask him to explain himself, reserving the right to refer the matter to the FFF disciplinary committee.
