Kenyan police said on Monday they had arrested two people in connection with the weekend stabbing to death of Ugandan athlete Benjamin Kiplagat.

The two men -- believed to be in their 30s -- were arrested on the outskirts of the Rift Valley town of Eldoret, local police commander Stephen Okal said.

"The two suspects are known criminals who have been terrorising the members of public," Okal told AFP. "We are in the advanced stage of the investigations and we will possibly be sending them to court tomorrow."

The Kenyan-born Kiplagat had represented Uganda internationally in the 3,000m steeplechase, including at several Olympic Games and World Championships.

The 34-year-old's body was found in a car on Saturday night with a deep knife wound to his neck.

While the motive of the killing was still unknown, police said investigations had shown that Kiplagat had been "waylaid" by the two men before he hit their motorcycle with his car.

"This probably provoked them into that violent act," Okal told AFP, referring to the stabbing.

One of the suspects had been arrested with a knife believed to have been used in the killing, he added.

Eldoret is known for being home to numerous athletes who undergo training in the high-altitude region.

Kiplagat, whose career spanned about 18 years, won the silver medal in the 3,000m steeplechase at the 2008 World Junior Championships and bronze at the Africa Championships in 2012.

He made the semi-finals of the event in the 2012 Olympics in London and also competed in Rio in 2016.

His death follows the killing in October 2021 of Kenyan distance running star Agnes Tirop who was found stabbed to death at the age of 25 in her home at Iten, a training hub near Eldoret.

Atlanta rallied with two outs in the seventh as Phillies relief pitchers issued three walks to load the bases before Ronald Acuna flew out to Rojas to end the inning.

Marcel Ozuna walked and Sean Murphy singled for Atlanta to begin the ninth inning but the Phillies retired the next three batters to seal the victory.

The BBC said Saturday it has agreed a financial settlement with England cricket legend Andrew "Freddie" Flintoff after he was seriously hurt while filming for its popular show "Top Gear". The British broadcaster's commercial arm BBC Studios did not specify the settlement figure with the former England captain over the crash, but it reportedly totals £9 million ($11 million).

The 45-year-old celebrated former all-rounder was hospitalised and has endured a slow recovery since the driving accident while filming for the hit motoring programme last December.

"BBC Studios has reached an agreement with Freddie that we believe supports his continued rehabilitation, return to work and future plans," a BBC Studios spokesperson said in a statement.

In September, Flintoff appeared in public for the first time since the accident, still sporting facial injuries, after he was coaxed into joining England's backroom staff in an unpaid capacity.

He played 79 Tests and 148 one-day internationals for England before retiring from cricket aged 32.

He has gone on to have a successful career in television, including co-presenting "Top Gear".

During his cricket career, Flintoff played a pivotal role in England winning the Ashes in 2005 and 2009.

Big-serving Hubert Hurkacz blasted his way into the final of the Shanghai Masters on Saturday with a ruthless 6-3, 6-4 win over Sebastian Korda of the United States. The 16th-seeded Pole sent down 14 aces as he barrelled his way into a meeting with either fifth seed Andrey Rublev or 18th seed Grigor Dimitrov.

They play their semi-final later on Saturday. The 26th seed Korda, who was contesting his first Masters semi-final, was always up against it in the face of a barrage from Hurkacz.

The 26-year-old Pole did not face a single break point on his powerful serve and wrapped up the last-four encounter on his second match point after 77 minutes.

"Seb is a really tough opponent and great returner so you need to play well against him otherwise he ends up taking advantage of your shots," said Hurkacz, who has six titles already including winning the Miami Masters in 2021.

Tennis: Hubert Hurkacz wins over Sebastian Korda in Shanghai masters final

American tennis great Billie Jean King called for a combined women's and men's World Cup of tennis and for players to wear shirt numbers, to keep growing the sport. King, a 39-time Grand Slam winner, including 12 singles titles, said she would bring the women's Billy Jean King Cup and the men's Davis Cup together into a World Cup.

Formerly the Federation Cup, the finals of the competition renamed in King's honour takes place in Seville from November 7-12, while the Davis Cup finals are in Malaga between November 21-26, with both currently labelled the 'World Cup' of tennis.

"I want us together, I always want the men and women together. I always want us to be together at tournaments," King told a media call ahead of the BJK Cup finals.

"People like it when we're all happy together."

King said the influence of football means it is more essential than ever for tennis to have its own recognisable World Cup. "The World Cup has become more and more important because of the football...the whole world understands World Cup," she continued.

"When I say we're the World Cup of women's tennis, they get it right away, they know it's country versus country, it's exciting, it can be any place in the world."

Swiatek, Gauff and Pegula will be at the WTA Finals in Mexico the week before, with the women's tennis organising body selecting the venue in September, despite knowing the BJK Cup would be in Seville. "We've had our date for a long time, I think you should ask the WTA (about that)," said King.

"(For) our sport, I think we all need to get together and figure out a better calendar for the players.

"I care about the sport, I care about the World Cup, I would like us to sit down and really try to figure it out, so everybody wins."

King, 79, said tennis has to serve the fans first and one of the ways to do that would be to make players more identifiable on court.

"We have to think about the public, our fans, how do we make it easy for them? If you go to Wimbledon and they have to wear all white, you don't know who the players are," she continued.

"I think it's ridiculous. They don't have the name on the back of their shirts. I think we should have a number. Why should we have a number? Because children love numbers."

"This is about our audience. This isn't about us, we go play to make our audience happy. Unfortunately, most players think the people come to watch them play, but our job as an entertainer, as a performer, as a pro athlete -- when we walk on the court, the audience is everything."

Worried, but relieved, spectators at the Belgium-Sweden Euro 2024 match left the Brussels stadium shortly before midnight after being held there for two-and-a-half hours following the killing of two Swedes in a nearby attack, with the gunman still at large.

"I was stressed, I wondered how we were going to get back, because we came by metro," Manon Antoine, 21, told AFP, accompanied by her brother.

The Swedish supporters were the last to leave the King Baudouin Stadium, where some 35,000 fans of the two teams had turned out for the Euro 2024 qualifier.

Manu Leroy, CEO of the Belgian football association, said police had escorted the Swedish fans and players to "go straight to the airport and leave" because the perpetrator, who was said to be inspired by the Islamic State group, was still on the run and being sought by police early Tuesday.

According to investigators, the Swedish nationality of the victims was a "probable motivation" of the attacker, according to his video claim. Several Belgian media outlets said the two individuals killed were wearing football shirts belonging to the Swedish national team.

The area around the stadium, located about five kilometres (three miles) from the scene of the attack, was being monitored by police, and traffic past the ground had been halted.

- 'The safest place' -

About 10 minutes before kickoff, match organisers learned that "something serious had happened", Leroy said on RTBF.

"At first it was decided that the match should go ahead because the stadium was the safest place for the fans, especially the Swedish fans so that they would be safe," he said. But at halftime, the match was halted with the score at 1-1 and did not restart.

UEFA said the decision to abandon the game was taken after consultation with both teams and the Belgian authorities. "I am terribly sad. We agreed 100 percent not to play the second half because of the conditions and out of respect for the victims and their families," said Sweden coach Janne Andersson, quoted by the Swedish news agency TT.

Held inside the stadium as a security precaution, the fans braved the cold and the anxiety by singing songs in honour of Sweden and chanting "All together, all together!". "I think that we all tried to keep our spirits up. We also sang little songs for the Sweden supporters because it is especially for them that it is a very sad evening," said football fan Jacques Decoq outside the stadium. "We tried to stay warm with a little bit of atmosphere."

Applause also punctuated the long wait. Finally, shortly before midnight, Red Devils fans began to leave the stadium, the authorities having chosen to evacuate the Belgian supporters stand by stand to avoid crowds.

"Everyone remained very calm, the supporters started singing, there was an atmosphere, even if we were a little worried," said Karen, who came from Limburg with her family.

The area around the stadium, located about five kilometres (three miles) from the scene of the attack, was being monitored by police, and traffic past the ground had been halted. - 'The safest place' - About 10 minutes before kickoff, match organisers learned that "something serious had happened", Leroy said on RTBF. "We tried to stay warm with a little bit of atmosphere." Applause also punctuated the long wait. Brussels shooting: Long wait for fans held in stadium after Belgium-Sweden Euro qualifier suspended

Australia head coach Eddie Jones on Tuesday ruled out a rumoured switch to Japan, pledging to stick with the Wallabies following a disastrous Rugby World Cup campaign. "I'm staying, mate. I've always been committed to Australian rugby and I want to leave it in a better place," Jones told a press conference in Sydney amid speculation of his imminent resignation.

Although the pugnacious 63-year-old said he has unfinished business with Australian rugby, he could not guarantee he would see out the rest of his four-year contract. "That's not my decision," he replied when asked if he would still be in charge for the 2027 World Cup, which Australia will host.

"I don't control those sorts of things, all I do is coach. We've got a review going forward and we'll see what happens at the end of the review."

As the faltering Australian side stumbled through its tournament pool games in France, reports emerged that Jones had been secretly interviewing for the head coach role in Japan.

Jones has warm relationships with key powerbrokers at the top of Japanese rugby, having previously coached the Brave Blossoms between 2012 and 2015.

Rumours

"I haven't been speaking to anyone, mate," Jones assured reporters on Tuesday.

"Where the rumours come from? I don't know mate, you'll have to tell me."

Jones also defended his decision to stack the World Cup squad with a band of unproven rookies, leaving a host of veterans at home including 125-Test former skipper Michael Hooper.

"The results from the World Cup weren't what we hoped, but I still think I've made the right decision," he said.

"Everyone has got their own judgement, haven't they? My choice was to go with youth and I stand by that."

Jones defended the team's performances, saying his one regret was telling reporters to "give themselves an uppercut" during a testy press conference at Sydney Airport before jetting off for France.

"I need to give myself an uppercut," a smiling Jones said on Tuesday.

Part of Jones's long-term pitch has been the need to blood new talent ahead of the British and Irish Lions tour in 2025, and the home World Cup two years after that.

People love drama

After years of financial decline, Australian rugby is banking on a much-needed cash injection from those two marquee events -- and can ill afford to continue alienating crowds with lacklustre performances.

"I think I've left the Australian team in a great position to go on to 2027," Jones said.

"I didn't come back to Australia to have a holiday -- to sit down at Coogee Beach and have some fish and chips and a nice flat white," he added.

"It was always going to be a battle." Once dubbed the "Walking Headline", Jones said it was no surprise his recent travails had whipped up a media frenzy in Australia.

"People love to see controversy over a coach," he said. "Either a player getting drunk, misbehaving, or the coach getting the sack.

"That creates headlines and people love that sort of drama."

Jones was hailed as the saviour of Australian rugby when he returned to the national setup earlier this year, replacing New Zealander Dave Rennie after a string of bad results. Fresh from inking a lucrative four-year contract, he predicted the Wallabies could win the World Cup this year through a special "smash and grab" raid on rugby's greatest prize.

Instead the side were bundled out in pool play -- their worst result at the tournament -- and have now slumped to seven losses during Jones's nine games in charge.

Rugby: Australian head coach Eddie Jones commits to Wallabies denies rumour for Japan move

England captain Marlie Packer said Tuesday that the Red Roses would be "ready" for their showdown with hosts New Zealand in a looming repeat of last year's nail-biting women's World Cup final. Packer scored one of England's five tries last November in Auckland, but finished on the losing side as New Zealand clinched a 34-31 victory in the dying seconds. That bitter defeat ended England's 30-match winning streak dating back to 2019.

"A year on, we've got a very different squad, a new coaching staff, so it's really exciting. We can't wait to play," Packer said Tuesday in Wellington. England, who won a fifth straight Six Nations title last April, are back in New Zealand to take part in a new top-level women's competition.

They face Australia at Wellington's Sky Stadium on Friday to kick off "WXV1" -- a round-robin tournament played over each of the next three weekends. Hosts New Zealand, Australia and Canada -- the best teams from the Pacific Four competition -- will each play the top Six Nations teams England, France and Wales.

The third and final round of matches will be in Auckland, where the Black Ferns play England in a repeat of last year's World Cup final."That was a massive game and there was a lot of disappointment for us," said Packer, the Six Nations' top scorer this season with seven tries.

"We can be super proud of the performance we put in," she added."We know the game is in three weeks' time, we'll make sure we are ready and prepared, but look, we're all about Australia this Friday."

New Zealand, who demolished Australia 43-3 in a warm-up game a fortnight ago, start their campaign against France in Wellington on Saturday. Black Ferns captain co-captain Kennedy Simon said they had been watching England and France closely.

New Zealand squeezed past the French 25-24 in a hard-fought World Cup semi-final last year. Simon anticipated more crunch games against the Europeans. "It brings a bit of fire, we don't get to meet them regularly."

"Our trainings have been brutal. I know England are big... but we are smart, we're calculated, and we're ready to go."

The New Zealander hoped the new competition for the world's top teams would encourage girls to take up rugby.

"I think because we'll have all the best teams in one area playing against each other, it'll spark girls playing rugby," she said.

"For the growth of women in rugby, it will be huge."

Rugby: England's Red Roses ready to face dominating Black Ferns

Defending champion Taylor Fritz won his Japan Open first-round match on Tuesday (Oct 17) and said he felt "motivated and ready to play" after lightening his load ahead of the tournament. The American has been one of the busiest players on the ATP Tour this season but he has taken his foot off the gas since the US Open, appearing in only the Laver Cup and Shanghai Masters.

He beat Britain's Cameron Norrie 6-4, 6-3 to kick off the defence of his Tokyo title and said it was "probably an advantage that I might be less burnt-out".

After the US Open, I think I had played the most matches of anyone on tour," said Fritz, the number one seed in Tokyo. "I thought it made sense to start the Asia swing in Shanghai. I feel motivated and ready to play." World number 10 Fritz beat fellow American Frances Tiafoe in last year's Japan Open final and has won six career titles.

He is the highest-ranked American in the world and overcame an early setback to dispatch Norrie in his Tokyo opener.

"I was holding easily and then out of nowhere he broke me, so it was a tough spot to be in," said Fritz.

"I feel like I played a couple of really good points to break and I played the bigger, more important points better in the return games.

"I definitely upped my level."

Fritz was joined in the next round by American Ben Shelton, who beat Japan's Taro Daniel 3-6, 6-4, 7-6 (7/2). Australia's number four seed Alex de Minaur also progressed with a 4-6, 7-6 (7/4), 7-6 (7/1) win over Britain's Jack Draper.

Australia's Alexei Popyrin eliminated Russian number seven seed Karen Khachanov 6-4, 6-2.

The South Yorkshire police arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter over the death of American ice hockey player Adam Johnson who died after his neck was slashed during a match.

The police refused to provide more details regarding the person but said the suspect was under arrest.

"Detectives have today arrested a man on suspicion of manslaughter. He remains in police custody at this time," a spokesperson for the South Yorkshire Police said.

"Our investigation launched immediately following this tragedy and we have been carrying out extensive enquiries ever since to piece together the events which led to the loss of Adam in these unprecedented circumstances," they added.

The post-mortem report of 29-year-old Johnson who played for Nottingham Panthers confirmed that he died as a result of the fatal gash on his neck made by Sheffield Steelers Matt Petgrave's skate blade.

"We have been speaking to highly specialised experts in their field to assist in our inquiries and continue to work closely with the health and safety department at Sheffield City Council, which is supporting our ongoing investigation," added the South Yorkshire police.

Accident or murder?

The incident transpired on October 28 during the second period of the Challenge Cup game at Sheffield Steelers' Utilita Arena.

The video footage of the accident that later went viral on social media showed Petgrave charging at Johnson and raising his left leg, exposing the sharp blade which slashed the American's neck. Since then, the authorities have been trying to ascertain if Petgrave's movement was accidental or pre-mediated.
