IPL 2022 has been a big hit so far. This year has seen plenty of new captains in the form of Ravindra Jadeja, Mayank Agarwal, Hardik Pandya, Faf du Plessis along with some other young and inexperienced leaders such as Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant along with proven ones including Rohit Sharma and Kane Williamson.

Among the debutant and inexperienced captains, Hardik Pandya, KL Rahul and Sanju Samson have managed to lead their respective franchises reasonably well and, thus, the three teams are in the top-4 in the points table after match 31. However, former England captain Micheal Vaughan has been impressed with Rishabh Pant's calmness while leading an inconsistent Delhi Capitals (DC).

Speaking about the DC camp, Vaughan said, "That opening combination is such a key part of the Delhi method, Prithvi Shaw and David Warner coming out and opening aggressively. And then the skipper himself who is settling into the job quite nicely. I have been impressed by Rishabh's captaincy, he has been a lot calmer than I thought he would be. I thought he would be a bit excited but really impressed by his calmness."

Pant has amassed 144 runs in five outings, at a strike-rate of 146.93. In addition, he has not been bogged down in terms of body language and captaincy approach despite DC's barren run in the 15th season.

Dwelling on DC's poor run, where they have won only one of their last four games, Vaughan said, "You are just desperate when you need to win a match for one of your better players to show up and do something special. I think Ricky will be telling the team collectively to play smart but he will also be going to bed thinking, 'come on Davey' or 'come on Prithvi'. Just one of you get off to a flying start, get a century and that pretty much does the trick in T20 cricket."

IPL 2022: DC's game vs PBKS to go ahead despite COVID-19 scare, RR clash shifted from Pune to Mumbai

There were plenty of top performers in Rajasthan Royals (RR) - Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) clash in match 30 of IPL 2022 edition, held on Monday evening (April 18) at the Brabourne Stadium, Mumbai. While Jos Buttler's 103 and rapid knocks from skipper Sanju Samson-Shimron Hetmyer set it up for RR as they posted 217-5, after being asked to bat first, Yuzvendra Chahal's five-fer and Obed McCoy's twin strikes helped Rajasthan beat KKR by seven runs in a high-scoring thriller.

Apart from Chahal, Buttler and the likes, R Ashwin also contributed to RR's famous win over KKR. While Ashwin returned with 4-0-38-1, he accounted for the wicket of danger man Andre Russell. The West Indian came out to bat at No. 5 with more than six overs left in KKR's run-chase. With skipper Shreyas Iyer going well from the other end, Russell could've easily completed the run-chase with a few overs to spare had he got his eye in.

Nonetheless, Samson decided to end Ashwin's spell by making him bowl the 14th over as the wily off-spinner aimed to send off Russell. The 35-year-old succeeded and bamboozled the all-rounder for a golden duck. Here's the magical delivery from Ashwin which led to Russell's dismissal and spun RR back into the contest:

''Leg-spinners have more wicket-taking options and he showed today how he can get wickets and changed the game in a single over. I think he showed all the leg-spinners that they are the match-winning bowlers in this competition," the former SL pacer added.

RR vs LSG: Yuzvendra Chahal scripts a new record, becomes 2nd fastest to claim 150 IPL wickets

Trent Boult was breathing fire in Rajasthan Royals' (RR) face-off versus KL Rahul-led Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) in match 20 of the IPL 2022 edition on Sunday evening (April 10). After Sanju Samson-led RR were asked to bat first and they rode on Shimron Hetmyer's 59 to post 165-6, Boult's opening spell tilted the game in RR's favour before they eventually won the close contest by three runs, at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai.

As Rahul & Co. came out to bat in their 166-run chase, the Lucknow skipper was left gobsmacked with an absolute peach of an inswinger from the New Zealand speedster. Thus, he was dismissed off the first ball of the run-chase before Boult also claimed Krishnappa Gowtham's wicket. He ended with 4-0-30-2 whereas Yuzvendra Chahal returned with 4 for 41 to take RR to a 3-run win.

While many thought it was Sri Lanka's former pacer and RR's current fast bowling coach Lasith Malinga's idea to ask Boult to bowl an inswinger from round the wicket, the Kiwi revealed the real mastermind and credited his compatriot James Neesham -- who was warming the RR bench -- for the memorable wicket.

At the post-match presentation, Boult revealed, "It was a late call at breakfast, and it was Jimmy Neesham's idea to go with that plan against KL Rahul. I don't want to give him too much credit (laughs). My role with the new ball is to take as many wickets as possible. It's a pretty simple game for me at the top and get it to swing. The humidity and the overheads assisted it."

Meanwhile, Rahul opined on the unplayable delivery and said, "I didn't see it (the ball that got him from Boult), if I did I could have done something about it. Have to give it to him. Was a good ball."

The humidity and the overheads assisted it." Meanwhile, Rahul opined on the unplayable delivery and said, "I didn't see it (the ball that got him from Boult), if I did I could have done something about it. Have to give it to him. Was a good ball."

Match 13 of the IPL 2022 edition saw the one-time winners and table-toppers Rajasthan Royals (RR) lock horns with Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday (April 5). In a game that went down to the wire, Sanju Samson-led RR franchise lost their first game of the 15th season, to lose by four wickets in defence of 170.

Riding on in-form opener Jos Buttler's 47-ball 70* and Shimron Hetmyer's unbeaten 42, RR posted a competitive 169-3 after being asked to bat first. In reply, RCB were on the mat, at 87 for 5, before Dinesh Karthik's 23-ball 44 not out and Shahbaz Ahmed's 45 took the Bengaluru franchise home in a crunch encounter.

Reflecting on the match, former Indian opener Sunil Gavaskar questioned RR skipper Samson's tactics for his field placements for in-form finisher DK. "You have to ask questions of Sanju Samson. He's just brought that man in, the man who was there at deep mid-wicket. Knowing that this is one of Dinesh Karthik's strengths, going across outside the off-stump and playing the ball in," Gavaskar told Star Sports.

"Okay, not sweetly on the middle of the bat. But still, if you swung the bat hard enough, even if you get an inside edge, it's gonna race away to the boundary. That is not good captaincy. If you don't have fielders protecting you over there and you bowl this delivery on the middle and leg, a slower delivery halfway down the pitch, to such an experienced, such an innovative batsman like Dinesh Karthik, it's going to go," he opined.

Many former cricketers and experts of the game also slammed Samson for not wisely rotating his bowlers and bringing back Yuzvendra Chahal (who returned with 2 for 15) early during the DK-Shahbaz match-winning 67-run sixth-wicket stand.

Despite the defeat, RR remain atop in the points table.

IPL 2022, Rajasthan Royals vs Royal Challengers Bangalore: Head-to-head record, trivia, stats and squads

Match 13 of the IPL 2022 edition will see the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR) face the three-time runners-up Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai on Tuesday evening (April 5).

Both sides are coming into this game on the back of a win in their previous outing. While RCB beat the two-time champions Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in a low-scoring thriller last week, RR emerged on top of the five-time winners Mumbai Indians (MI) in a high-scoring encounter on April 2 (Saturday) to remain unbeaten after their opening two fixtures.

So far, RR have played at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium, Pune and at the Dr. DY Patil Stadium, Mumbai. Thus, they will be tested at the Wankhede, where the pitch has tested the batters and has assisted the pacers in the powerplays. It will be interesting to see how they respond to the change in conditions at the iconic stadium.

Predicting RR's XI for RCB fixture

Given that RR have a settled line-up, with their batters expressing themselves and having a lot of variety in the bowling department, they might not be willing to make wholesome changes in the line-up. Nonetheless, they would be hoping for a turnaround from Yashasvi Jaiswal, who hasn't performed so far in the two games (scoring 20 and 1). The other chink in RR's armour can be their sixth bowling option. They will hope for their main bowlers to strike at regular intervals as Riyan Parag is their only additional option if one from their bowling unit has an off-day

IPL 2022, Mumbai Indians vs Rajasthan Royals: Head-to-head record, trivia, stats and squads

A new-look and re-energised Rajasthan Royals attacked from the outset and inflicted on Sunrisers Hyderabad a 61-run hammering to begin their campaign in IPL-15 on a rousing note here on Tuesday.

RR got the better of SRH in every department after skipper Sanju Samson led from the front with a scintillating 27-ball 55 to power his team to an imposing 210 for six.

Smarting from the pounding in the first half of their opening fixture, SRH failed to pose any serious threat to RR after a disastrous start to their innings, which saw them slip to 9/3 and then 29/4.

In the end, Kane Williamson's (2) team was stopped at 149 for seven, with the captain himself enduring a bad day in office.

SRH wouldn't have got even that many had it not been for Aiden Markram's unbeaten 57 and Washington Sundar's 14-ball 40, the latter somewhat making up with the willow after his forgettable outing with the ball.

SRH's top-order batting was in stark contrast to Samson and Devdutt Padikkal (41 off 29 balls; 4x4; 6x2), who added 73 runs for the third wicket off 41 balls, before Shimron Hetmyer used his brute power to clobber 32 in only 13 deliveries and take RR past 200.

Samson's six-hitting prowess was on display as he struck five maximums and three boundaries, sparing no bowler during his entertaining stay in the middle.

Later Hetymar smashed three sixes to pile on SRH's misery. A clinical show by the bowlers, led by leg-spinner Yuzvedra Chahal (3/22 in 4 overs), then completed the task for RR.

Chasing an improbable 211, Sunrisers lost key batter Williamson after a diving catch by Padikkal before Rahul Tripathi (0) became Prasidh Krishna's second victim of the day. It became 9/3 as Trent Boult trapped Nicolas Pooran (0) in front of the wicket.

To make matters worse, Chahal removed two more batters in Abhishek Sharma and Abdul Samad in quick succession, as Sunrisers lost half their side for 37 runs and stared at a heavy defeat.

But Markram, Romario Shepherd (24) and Sundar, who got 24 runs in the 17th over, delayed the inevitable and reduced the margin of defeat.

During the final over, pacer Nathan Coulter-Nile injured himself while landing and was taken off. Put into bat, Royals opener Jos Buttler got a life on zero courtesy a no ball. Buttler (35) and Yashasvi Jaiswal (20) then gave the side a flying start, adding 58 runs to lay the foundation for a big total.

Buttler was brutal on Umran Malik, hammering him for two fours and two maximums in the fourth over, as RR collected 21 runs.

The two openers then struck a six each off Sundar (0/47) in the next over as RR raced to 52 for no loss in five overs.
Jaiswal however perished in the seventh over, holing out to Markram off Shepherd. While Buttler, who hit three fours and as many sixes, was dismissed at the start of the ninth over as RR slipped to 75 for two.

Showing intent straightaway, Samson started with a four and a six over long-off and hit another maximum over fine-leg, taking on the SRH attack with gusto.

While Samson found the fence at will, Padikkal too got into the groove and began attacking in the 12th over when he pulled T Natarajan for a maximum.

Samson was again brutal on Sundar, striking him for two successive sixes in the 16th over as RR marched on.
SRH removed Paddikkal and Samson in quick succession, but a lot of damage had been done by then, before Hetmyer compounded the bowling team's woes with his massive hits as RR scored 123 runs in the back 10.

IPL 2022: Sanju Samson, Prasidh Krishna star as Rajasthan Royals thrash Sunrisers Hyderabad by 61 runs

A new season will begin for both Rajasthan Royals (RR) and the Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) camp as the two sides will square off with each other in match 5 of the ongoing IPL 2022 edition. This will also be the first-ever match to be held at the Maharashtra Cricket Association (MCA) Stadium, Pune in the 15th season of the cash-rich league.

Talking about the RR franchise, they have revamped in style after finishing the IPL 2021 edition on the seventh spot. Post the two-day mega auction, in mid-February 2022, the Sanju Samson & Co. have added more strength to the squad with the addition of Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer, R Ashwin, Jimmy Neesham, Nathan Coulter-Nile, Yuzvendra Chahal, Trent Boult, Prasidh Krishna, etc.

Here's the predicted playing XI for RR ahead of their season-opener versus SRH:

Jos Buttler is very likely to open. Given his stature and ability to put the opposition on the back foot from ball one, he will continue to start at the top and is likely to be accompanied by Yashasvi Jaiswal or Padikkal. Jaiswal struck form in the second and final leg of IPL 2021 and, hence, can be preferred once again to open with Buttler. Padikkal has also opened for his previous franchise, i.e. Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB), but has played at No. 3 in his twin outings for India in the shortest format.

RR might like to remain flexible with the No. 3 spot. They might be temped to send either Samson or Padikkal depending on the situation (Samson for Buttler, Padikkal for Jaiswal, respectively). Hetmyer looks like a certain at No. 5, followed by the likes of James Neesham, Riyan Parag and the main bowlers.

Among the bowlers, the onus will fall upon Trent Boult, Krishna and Yuzi Chahal-Ashwin. RR can also swap Nathan Coulter-Nile with Neesham, however, the Kiwi might edge past the former in the initial few games.

IPL 2022: Padikkal or Jaiswal as Buttler's opening partner? Predicting Sanju Samson-led RR's playing XI vs SRH

Kane Williamson-led Sunriers Hyderabad (SRH) will take on Rajasthan Royals (RR) in their opening game of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 on Tuesday (March 29). The two sides will lock horns at the Maharashtra Cricket Association Stadium in Pune and will be looking to get off to a winning start this season. Both Rajasthan Royals and Sunrisers Hyderabad had failed to make it to the playoffs last year.

SRH endured a woeful campaign as they managed to win only three out of their 14 matches to finish at the bottom of the points table last year. It was a disastrous campaign for their former captain David Warner, who was sacked from captaincy midway through the season and was left on the bench before being released ahead of the mega auction last month.

SRH have revamped their squad by roping in the likes of Nicholas Pooran, Marco Jansen, Washington Sundar and Rahul Tripathi among others. SRH have been one of the most consistent franchises in the IPL over the last few years and will be looking to make it to the playoffs once again this season.

On the other hand, Rajasthan Royals also parted ways with some of the big names like Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer among others but have managed to replace them with some brilliant signings. RR acquired Trent Boult, Yuzvendra Chahal, Devdutt Padikkal, Shimron Hetmyer and R Ashwin at the mega auction last month, who can all be game-changers for the Sanju Samson-led side.

SRH vs RR, IPL 2022 prediction today: Who will win Sunrisers Hyderabad vs Rajasthan Royals match?

Kumar Sangakkara, who is currently the Director of Cricket for Indian Premier League (IPL) side Rajasthan Royals, was all praise for skipper Sanju Samson and called him one of the best T20 batsmen.

Samson was one of the players retained by the franchise before the mega auction earlier this year and Sangakkara went on to call him an ‘absolute matchwinner’ ahead of the new season.

"Irrespective of him being the captain or the future of RR, he is one of the best T20 players. He is a magnificent player, destructive, match-winner, has every ability that you want in a batter. He was captain before I took over last season. I have come to know him really well and admire him. Rohit Sharma-led Team India had a dream run in the Sri Lanka T20Is. After whitewashing West Indies in the white-ball series at home, Rohit & Co. hosted the Dasun Shanaka-led Islanders in the three-match series and ended up further extending their unbeaten run in the format (12).

There were a lot of positives for Team India as they are preparing well for the 2022 T20 World Cup, to be held in Australia later this year. While Shreyas Iyer made the most of his opportunities -- in the absence of Virat Kohli, KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Rishabh Pant -- Avesh Khan, Md Siraj, Ishan Kishan, Ravi Bishnoi also did well. Sanju Samson, on the other hand, didn't deliver as per expectations. While the Rajasthan Royals (RR) skipper made a stunning 25-ball 39 in the second and penultimate encounter, he fell for a 12-ball 18 in the final T20I on Sunday.

Thus, disappointed by Samson's mediocre series versus the Islanders, former Indian opener Wasim Jaffer told ESPNCricinfo, "He obviously hasn't grabbed his opportunities. Yesterday (Saturday) and today (Sunday)'s game was a good, good opportunity for him to stake his claim as a third wicketkeeping option or as a batter."

'I really feel sad' - Wasim Jaffer disappointed with Sanju Samson's run in Sri Lanka T20Is

Rohit Sharma-led Team India will be aiming to pull off their third successive T20 series clean sweep in a row when they take on Sri Lanka in the third and final T20I of the three-match series on Sunday (February 27). India defeated Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the second T20I at the HPCA Stadium in Dharamshala on Saturday to take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the series with back-to-back wins.

Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja and Sanju Samson were the stars of India's victory as the trio played brilliant knocks with the bat to power India to a comprehensive win. Asked to chase down the target of 184 runs in 20 overs, India rode on Iyer's 44-ball 74 and crucial knocks of 39 and 45 runs from Samson and Jadeja respectively to wrap up the run chase with 17 balls to spare.

India will be looking to continue their winning run in the third T20I. However, the hosts have received a major setback ahead of the final game as wicket-keeper batter Ishan Kishan suffered a head injury while batting during the second T20I and is likely to miss the clash.

Kishan was hot on the helmet by a vicious bouncer from Lahiru Kumara while batting and suffered a head injury. He was taken to hospital for scans and is unlikely to take the field in the 3rd T20I. In his absence, backup opener Mayank Agarwal can be asked to open the innings with Rohit in the third T20I. Samson will keep the wickets and will continue to bat at number four.

Ishan Kishan to miss out? Rohit Sharma-led India's predicted playing XI for 3rd T20I against Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma-led Team India beat Sri Lanka by seven wickets to win the second and penultimate T20I, in Dharamshala, on Saturday evening (February 26) and clinch the series with an unassailable 2-0 lead.

Opting to bowl first, Rohit-led India bowlers didn't have an easy ride versus the Islanders. Pathum Nissanka, who fell for a golden duck in the series opener, and Danushka Gunathilaka's opening stand (67 runs) ensured a good start for the visitors. While they did survive some close calls initially, the duo found their rhythm as the innings progressed. Against the run of play, Ravindra Jadeja struck to remove Gunathilaka for 38.

When it seemed Indian bowlers had managed to restrict the Lankans, skipper Dasun Shanaka's 19-ball 47 and Nissanka's calculative and well-compiled 53-ball 75 propelled SL to 183-5. Among Indian bowlers, Jadeja, Harshal Patel and Bhuvneshwar Kumar remained expensive.

In reply, India's chase started with Rohit departing for 1. Ishan Kishan also failed to get going to be dismissed for cheap. The onus, this, shifted on in-form Shreyas Iyer and Sanju Samson. While Samson took some time before launching some biggies, Iyer played a sensational inning -- with a flurry of boundaries at regular intervals along with smart rotation of strike.

While India lost Samson, courtesy a blinder by B Fernando, Jadeja-Iyer completed the formalities as Lankans continued to be sloppy on the field and gave plenty of boundary-balls. Jadeja dominated the unbroken fourth-wicket stand with Iyer (74 not out) to return with an 18-ball 45* (at a whopping strike-rate of 250).

With this win, India's best-ever winning streak in the format has now stretched to 11. Among Test-playing nations, Afghanistan top the list holding the first two spots. Now, India have joined the Afghans in the second position with 11 successive wins. If India inflict a clean sweep versus the Sri Lankans, they will come at par with Afghanistan at the top spot (12).

Shreyas Iyer, Ravindra Jadeja keep India's winning streak alive, Men in Blue win T20I series vs Sri Lanka

Rohit Sharma-led team India will be looking to continue their winning run when they take on Sri Lanka in the first T20I of the upcoming three-match series in Lucknow on Thursday. India are scheduled to play three T20Is followed by two Tests against the visitors at home. India will be heading into the series on a confident note after clean sweeping West Indies 3-0 in their last T20 assignment.

However, India will be without a number of key players, who were part of the T20I series win against West Indies. While Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant have been rested, the likes of KL Rahul, Suryakumar Yadav and Deepak Chahar will miss the three-match series against Sri Lanka due to respective injuries.

While a number of stars are set to miss the series, India will have both Ravindra Jadeja and Jasprit Bumrah back in the squad for the three T20Is. While Jadeja is making a comeback after recovering from an injury, Bumrah had been rested from the T20Is against West Indies and is all set to return.

With no Kohli, Rahul and Suryakumar in the squad, India is likely to hand more opportunities to Ruturaj Gaikwad, who can open the batting with skipper Rohit Sharma or Ishan Kishan. Shreyas Iyer can take Kohli's number 3 spot while Deepak Hooda or Sanju Samson can be asked to replace Suryakumar Yadav in the middle-order.

With Jadeja making his comeback, he is likely to bat at no.6 and will have Venkatesh Iyer in the lower-middle order to help him in finishing games. Hooda might not feature in the first game if the team management decides to give both Gaikwad and Samson an extended run to prove their worth.

With no Chahar in the squad, Harshal Patel is likely to feature in all three matches and will comprise the pace attack along with the experienced Bumrah and Bhuvneshwar Kumar. Bhuvneshwar has been impressive in his last few matches and will be hoping to continue his fine form with the ball against Sri Lanka.

Yuzvendra Chahal is likely to play as the lone spinner in the XI in the first T20I and might get rotated with Kuldeep Yadav in the upcoming matches.

Ruturaj Gaikwad to open, Ravindra Jadeja returns: India's predicted playing XI for 1st T20I against Sri Lanka

Indian captain Rohit Sharma on Wednesday (February 23) said Sanju Samson is definitely in consideration in India's squad for the upcoming T20 World Cup 2022. The talented wicket-keeper batter, who has failed to cement his spot in the Indian team despite being handed several opportunities in the past, has been included in India's T20 squad for the upcoming three-match series against Sri Lanka at home.

The T20I series between the two sides is all set to get underway in Lucknow from February 24 (Thursday). In the absence of the likes of KL Rahul, Virat Kohli and Rishabh Pant, Samson is expected to bat in the middle-order and might also keep wickets for India in the series against Sri Lanka.

Captin Rohit lauded Samson for his skills and talent and said he has always managed to play knocks which have left fans on the moon. The Hitman believes Samson has the talent but needs to utilise it in a better manner to play regularly for the Indian team and cement his spot in the side.

“Speaking of Samson, I think you know that guy has got talent man. Whenever we have seen him bat in IPL and all of that, he has just produced an innings where everyone goes over the moon watching that inning,” Rohit said in a virtual press conference on Wednesday.

“He has got the skill-set to succeed. Now that is the whole point about this sport, a lot of people have skill-set, have talent, but it is how you utilise them is the most critical part and I think, it is up to Sanju to understand how he wants to utilise the talent and how he can maximise it," he added.

While many believe Samson is not in India's plans as far as the T20 World Cup 2022 in concerned, Rohit explained how the wicket-keeper batter's ability to play big shots makes him a valuable asset for the team in Australia.

The next edition of the T20 World Cup will be played Down Under where big-hitters will play a huge role in their team's success. Rohit lauded Samson for his stroke play and praised him for his backfoot shots.

“I hope we give him that confidence when he gets playing for us, and whenever he gets an opportunity I hope he understands that and definitely he is under consideration, which is why he is part of this team," said Rohit.

"It was certainly a tough decision to make, but we are delighted to confirm that Sanju, Jos and Yashasvi will be staying with us as the backbone of our team," he added.

IPL auction: Rajasthan Royals retention list includes Sanju Samson, Yashasvi Jaiswal and one overseas player

Rajasthan Royals have retained their skipper Sanju Samson, England's swashbuckling batter Jos Buttler and an uncapped Indian player Yashasvi Jaiswal ahead of the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2022 mega auction. Although the date is not confirmed yet, the auction is expected to take place in the second half of January.

Samson has amassed 3068 runs in 121 IPL matches with a strike rate of 134.20 since making his debut for the Rajasthan-based franchise back in 2013. The right-hand batter was retained for INR 140 million. On the other hand, Buttler and Jaiswal have been retained for INR 100 million and INR 40 million respectively.

Two big names, the England duo Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer, were released and the director of cricket, Kumar Sangakkara revealed the reason behind it. He said, "We had to take a lot of factors into consideration while making this decision and would have ideally liked to have gone with four players but the uncertainty surrounding Jofra's long term injury forced us to retain only three."

Speaking about the all-rounder Stokes, Sangakkara said, "It's extremely difficult. They are two of the best players in the world at the moment. Ben Stokes is the best all-rounder I have seen in a very long time. [He's] an absolute match-winner and he has shown that for Rajasthan Royals.

"Absolutely brilliant as a team man, brilliant in a leadership role. He just brings his amazing energy to the field. We had to consider the number of retentions possible. Player availability, in terms of how much of the tournament that a player is available for. It's the same with Jofra. We did everything to ascertain the nature of the injury, the recovery period," he added.

Sangakkara further said, "There hasn't been a phenomenon like Jofra Archer in any form of cricket, especially T20 cricket. Rajasthan Royals: Kumar Sangakkara explains why Ben Stokes and Jofra Archer were NOT retained

The IPL 2022 edition is keenly awaited. The upcoming season will see two new teams joining the cash-rich league, in the form of Lucknow and Ahmedabad. Ahead of the next year's IPL season, the mega auction will take place -- most likely in January, 2022 -- as many marquee players will enter the auction pool whereas many youngsters will get a chance to feature in the IPL.

Ahead of the mega auction, all the eight existing franchises have to share their list of retained players, maximum by November 30 (Tuesday). As per the rules, each franchise can retain a maximum of four players -- three Indians and one foreign player of two Indian and overseas players each. Former Indian all-rounder Irfan Pathan shared his list of four players who are likely to be retained by the one-time winners Rajasthan Royals (RR).

Pathan told Star Sports, "Sanju Samson for sure, second number will be Jos Buttler because he's been in fantastic form, one of the best hitters going around especially if you are talking about white ball cricket, so you don't want to miss out on that wicket-keeper batsman, who can bat up the order and down the order as well.

"The other guy, people might be tempted for Ben Stokes because he's a wonderful all-rounder, but I think I would put Jofra Archer in the same category as Jasprith Bumrah because you don't find many bowlers like that. So, I definitely would like Rajasthan Royals to retain Jofra Archer, and the fourth one, I am very tempted for Yashasvi Jaiswal because he's a young guy, who’s shown a lot of potential, and he could be the guy you could invest in.”

For the unversed, a report in ESPNcrinfo had recently suggested that RR have retained their skipper Samson for a whopping price. It remains to be seen how many players will the one-time champions retain ahead of the mega auction.

If Pathan's prediction comes true for RR, Ben Stokes might enter the auction pool and grab a mammoth deal by either of the two new teams or from the existing franchises. Meanwhile, many other players such as KL Rahul, David Warner, Pandya brothers, Suryakumar Yadav, etc. are expected to make heads turn in the IPL 2022 auction (if not retained by their current franchises).

Irfan Pathan picks his 4 retentions for RR ahead of IPL 2022 mega auction, excludes star player

Rajasthan Royals (RR) have reportedly retained their skipper Sanju Samson ahead of the mega auction, scheduled to take place early next year, for the IPL 2022 edition.

As per a report in ESPNCricinfo, the Royals have retained the services of captain Samson for a whopping price of INR 14 crore (1.8 crore usd). It is to be noted that although Samson would've technically been retained for INR 16 crore as the one-time winners' first retention choice, however, the management agreed on a deal worth the mentioned amount with the keeper-batsman. For the unversed, Samson was last signed by the Royals in 2018 when they had paid INR 8 crores for his services. Thus, the cricketer's rise in stature is surely evident as his price has gone significantly. He was on a roll with the bat in IPL 14, amassing 484 runs in 14 matches (6th most).

RR still have three slots to fill for their list of retained players. While Liam Livingstone, Jofra Archer, Jos Buttler, Yaishavi Jaiswal are being considered, it is surprising to note that England all-rounder Ben Stokes is not even being discussed. The star player had missed entire IPL 2021 due to personal reasons. In addition, it's only from a financial standpoint that the franchise bosses are sweating hard to find ways to retain him over other overseas options.

On the other hand, Archer is a safe bet in the shortest format but his injury-issues might not help his case. He had also missed entire IPL 2021, T20 World Cup (due to elbow issues) and won't even be part of the Ashes 2021.

RR retain skipper Sanju Samson for whopping price; Jos Buttler, Jofra Archer likely to follow suit: Report

IPL 2021 edition saw two new captains in the form of Rishabh Pant and Sanju Samson. While Samson took charge of the Rajasthan Royals (RR), taking over from Steve Smith, Pant replaced Shreyas Iyer after the Delhi Capitals (DC) skipper injured himself ahead of IPL 14's first leg, in India early this year.

While Iyer joined the DC franchise before the second and final leg, in the UAE, the team management continued with Pant as the skipper for the remainder of the season. Under Pant, DC topped the league stage and bowed out after losing the Qualifier 2 to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR). On the other hand, Samson-led RR finished at the seventh position.

Though T20s is regarded as a format for the youngsters, Sanjay Manjrekar still prefers experience over youth when it comes to leading a side in T20s. Hence, the former Indian cricketer-turned-commentator made a big claim on Pant and Samson being given captaincy in IPL 2021.

"The two teams that have reached the finals have been led by two seasoned captains - Morgan and Mahendra Singh Dhoni. I have come to this belief at the moment based on whatever I have seen in the IPL... I just wonder when you are looking at T20 specialist bowlers and batters and all-rounders, I think it's time for us to also start looking for T20 specialist captains, you know, great T20 captains. It's beyond me how T20 captaincy is given to a young Rishabh Pant, [he's] still young cricket wise, young Shreyas Iyer or Sanju Samson," Manjrekar said in a chat with ESPNCricinfo.

"I just don't understand the basis of that call because T20 captaincy is tough, it has a great impact... so I believe you've got to have brilliant T20 captains captaining sides and then even an ordinary side, I mean, look at CSK they have major weaknesses there but Dhoni has been able to get the best out of his playing XI. And those are the kind of captains IPL teams deserve, captains who are brilliant and just by their leadership and tactics will make a difference," he further asserted

It will be interesting to see if Pant and Samson manage to hold onto their respective captaincy roles, in DC and RR franchise respectively, in IPL 2022. As of now, two veteran captains -- who have had a below-par season with the bat -- in MS Dhoni and Eoin Morgan are set to lock horns in the IPL 14 season-finale, where Chennai Super Kings (CSK) will take on Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) on Friday (October 15) at Dubai International Cricket Stadium, Dubai.

IPL 2021: Beyond me how captaincy was given to Rishabh Pant, Sanju Samson, opines Sanjay Manjrekar

IPL 2021 edition is nearing its conclusion as 50 matches have been done and dusted. Before we enter the playoffs stage, there are a few riveting encounters left in the group stages as the defending champions Rohit Sharma-led Mumbai Indians (MI) will face the one-time winners Sanju Samson-led Rajasthan Royals (RR) in match 51 at the Sharjah Cricket Stadium, Sharjah.

Both MI and RR have been far from impressive this season. While RR have shown some brilliance from time to time, they are at the sixth position with 5 wins from 12 encounters. MI also have the same number of wins and losses but find themselves languishing on the seventh spot due to a poor net run-rate. For the unversed, both sides are alive in the playoffs race but really need to pull up their socks and attain some big wins to move ahead.

For RR, they need to win both their games. MI need to emerge on top in the remaining games and also hope for RR to beat Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR), who are favourites to take the vacant fourth-playoffs spot at the moment.

Ahead of the clash, here's a look at the head-to-head, trivia, stats and squads for both sides:

Head-to-head

In 23 games, MI lead RR 12-11 as both sides have been involved in some humdingers in the past. Hence, there isn't much to separate between both teams as match 51 promises to be an enthralling affair.

Stats

One of the main reasons for MI's failures this season has been their scoring rate against spinners in the UAE leg. It stands at 6.11 rpo. They are only better than Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH), who have fared much worse with a run-rate of 6.05

Trivia

This will be the first time that both sides will meet at Sharjah. They two teams have only played at Sheikh Zayed Stadium, Abu Dhabi whenever they met in the UAE in IPL history. In UAE, both sides met twice, with a 1-1 scoreline.
