<p>Speaking at the Council for Foreign Relations in New York on Tuesday, Jaishankar expressed concerns about Prime Minister Justin Trudeau-led government’s apparent willingness to tolerate such activities for political reasons.</p>

<p>India has been blaming the Canadian government for its soft-handed approach towards pro-Khalistan elements and passing off anti-India activities on its soil as an act of freedom of expression.</p>

<p>The whole situation particularly worsened after reports emerged that one of the members of the Five Eyes shared intelligence inputs with Canada over the alleged role of Indian government agents in the killing of Nijjar.</p>

<p>Amid the India-Canada diplomatic row over the killing of a terrorist, India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar slammed some countries' response to terrorism based on political convenience, in a hard-hitting address at&nbsp;the UN General Assembly (UNGA) in New York on Tuesday (Sep 26).</p>

<p>Jaishankar gave the statement amid escalating tensions between India and Canada, which&nbsp;is a safe haven for Khalistani extremists even as it accused India of being involved in the killing of the terrorist Hardeep Singh Nijjar.</p>

<p>Jaishankar also attacked "cherry-picking" by member states when it comes to respect for territorial integrity and non-interference in internal affairs.</p>

We met just a few weeks after the New Delhi G20 Summit, a summit which took place on the theme of ‘One Earth, One Family, One Future'.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>“Now, it was a challenging summit. It was actually a challenging presidency, and it was challenging because we were confronting a very sharp East-West polarisation as well as a very deep North-South divide. But we were very determined as the Presidency of the G20 to make sure that this organisation on which the world really had put so much hope was able to get back to its core agenda,” he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that it is becoming clearer that geopolitics calculation is impacting basic requirements of countries like food and energy. The minister also affirmed that India will be a partner, contributor and collaborator to deal with development challenges.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar&nbsp;said that G20's "core agenda was of global growth and development. So it was appropriate that we started our G20 Presidency by convening the voice of the Global South Summit. An exercise which involved 125 nations of the south of which most of you in some capacity participated."&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s foreign minister S Jaishankar asserted that the new multinational rail and shipping route connecting India and the Middle East&nbsp;to Europe does not pose any threat to China’s Belt and Road Initiative (BRI), and dissuaded efforts to portray the US-backed project as a counter to Beijing’s multibillion dollar infrastructure project.</p>

<p>Speaking exclusively to WION, Jaishankar termed the connectivity project “a very significant initiative”, which is “rooted deeply in tradition”.</p>

<p>“I would urge you to see things positively rather than see everything negatively in terms of countering other people,” the minister said in response to a question about the initiative being seen as a counter to China’s BRI.</p>

<p>“I think this is an initiative of very important countries, who are also good in it for themselves. They are not doing it because they are against somebody and something. They're doing it because they are&nbsp;for&nbsp;something,” he added.</p>

<p>Talking about the prospects of the corridor project, Jaishankar said, “I think it's a very, very significant initiative because at one level it is rooted very deeply in tradition, for hundreds of thousands of years, people have been traversing this route from India to Europe and back through the gulf, through the Arabian Peninsula.”</p>

<p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has revealed how New Delhi managed to forge a joint statement at the end of the G20 Summit in New Delhi last week when many had dubbed it an unlikely outcome.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Speaking to WION's Diplomatic Correspondent&nbsp;Siddhant Sibal in an exclusive interview, Jaishankar said apart from negotiating with the other G19 countries, it was Prime Minister Narendra Modi who stepped up during the crucial moments.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Within the realms of what is publicly disclosable, I would say, you know, at one level, you know, at one level there was a belief that this was G20. There has never been a G20 summit without a statement, but of course, the G20 has never faced the kind of problem that it has," Jaishankar told WION.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The EAM said negotiators worked round the clock to bridge the gaps and close out the positions. However,&nbsp;when they hit any roadblocks, they would always come to him and he, in turn, would reach out to the PM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"On<b>&nbsp;</b>the last day of the summit<b>,&nbsp;</b>I had to&nbsp;even go to the prime minister on certain issues.&nbsp;So all of that, you know, came together, really. In terms of how did it happen? I would say, you know, there were certain countries certainly you know, Brazil, South Africa, India. Clearly in the lead, Indonesia, to some extent, I think you can say the&nbsp;countries in the middle took a lot of initiative in trying to find a common landing ground. But again, I will give credit to the entire G20, this wouldn't have happened if every one of the G20 countries didn't feel that need to step up and come together."</p>

<p>"He [PM Modi] always has that sense, that look he was there, and as I said, in the last few hours, when we hit last few roadblocks, you know, I went to him in some cases and I said you know, it would help us if you talk to your counterpart leader and he was always willing."</p>

<p>Jaishankar added that it was the vision of the PM to take G20 to different cities of the country, instead of just confining it to a&nbsp;few meetings between officials in closed rooms.</p>

<p>"I would say we were enormously helped by the fact&nbsp;that we had a vision -- the vision and ambition of the prime minister in taking forward the G20. A lot of the concepts were his, the idea we do it in different cities, we do it in this way, projecting our culture, our traditions. He was not happy, just officials meeting in rooms. For him what was the impact of that in the world? So he encouraged us to take it out, to involve universities, colleges, and professional organisations," said the EAM.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The 18th round of discussions between Indian and Chinese Corps Commanders took place in April at the Chushul-Moldo border meeting point on the Chinese side. India and China had then reportedly reached an agreement to ensure security and stability in the Western Sector of the Line of Actual Control (LAC).</p>

<h2><strong>Bhutan-China talks going on</strong></h2>

<p>S Jaishankar also said that negotiations were going on between China and Bhutan as well.</p>

<p>This will be the seventh meeting of the India-Nepal Joint Commission, it is predominantly a bilateral mechanism at the level of the foreign ministers "with a mandate of reviewing the entire spectrum of Nepal-India bilateral relations". &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar is likely to visit Kathmandu in October, however, no official announcement has been made yet.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Both countries are expected to discuss various facades of cooperation in areas ranging from connectivity, economy and trade, energy cooperation, and water resources.&nbsp;</p>

<p>During the recent&nbsp;BIMSTEC retreat held in Bangkok, Nepal Foreign Minister NP Saud met with the Indian counterpart and discussed working closely on bilateral cooperation.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The two countries also agreed on a long-term power trade cooperation under which India has set a target of importing 10,000 megawatts of electricity from Nepal within the next 10 years.&nbsp;</p>

The INDIA alliance boycotted a meeting of the Business Advisory Committee (BAC) of the Rajya Sabha to protest against Prime Minister Narendra Modi not making a statement on Manipur violence.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earlier on Thursday, the alliance leaders arrived at parliament wearing black clothes to register their protest against the clashes in the state. Many sessions of the Rajya Sabha and the Lok Sabha have been adjourned amid protests and sloganeering over the issue.&nbsp;</p>

'I felt bad...': Jaishankar after INDIA vs Modi chants in parliament during his address

<p>Indian External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar met top Chinese diplomat, Wang Yi, on Friday, and discussed outstanding issues related to peace and tranquillity in Indo-China border areas.</p>

<p>The meeting took place on the sidelines of the ASEAN Regional Forum (ARF) Ministerial Meeting in Jakarta, Indonesia.</p>

<p>Jaishankar’s discussions with Wang Yi also covered EAS/ARF agenda, BRICS and the Indo-Pacific.</p>

<p>Following their meeting, the Indian external affairs minister took to Twitter and said, "Just concluded meeting with Director Wang Yi of the Office of the CPC Central Commission for Foreign Affairs. <p>As per Japan-based Kyodo News reports, China released a statement saying that its Foreign Minister Qin Gang will not be able to make it to the ASEAN meetings due to "health reasons".</p>

<h2><strong>India should meet China 'halfway': Wang Yi </strong></h2>

<p>The Chinese foreign ministry on Saturday said that Wang Yi urged India to focus on "common interests" and meet China "halfway" to defuse border tensions between the neighbouring countries.</p>

<p>"China and India's common interests clearly outweigh their differences," Wang Yi told Indian foreign minister Subrahmanyam Jaishankar, when the two met Friday.</p>

<p>"The two sides should support each other, rather than... suspect each other," Wang added.</p>

<p>"It is hoped that the Indian side will meet China halfway and find a solution to the border issue that is acceptable to both sides," Wang said.</p>

<p>The ministry statement added that both countries have agreed on holding the next round of military commander-level talks on the border issue "as soon as possible".</p>

<p>In 2020, India sought to limit investments from China as political tensions heightened between them.</p>

<p>"China is highly concerned about India's recent restrictive measures against Chinese companies," Wang added, while urging New Delhi to provide a "fair, transparent and non-discriminatory business environment".</p>

<p>For more than three years, India has been locked in a military standoff with China. Jaishankar dubs it the most complex challenge of his long diplomatic career.</p>

<p>Both countries have faced border disputes since 1962, with the latest one being in 2020 when Indian and Chinese forces engaged in a fight in the Galwan Valley.</p>

<p>Earlier, in the month of May, while clarifying India's stance on the issues, External Affairs Minister Jaishankar said that the two countries can't be normal until peace and tranquillity are maintained on the Land of Actual<br />
Control (LAC).</p>

<p>"I have made it very clear, publicly as well, that India-China relations are not normal and cannot be normal if peace and tranquillity in the border areas are disturbed..."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar said. "I have been very consistent about it and I have not changed my position in this meeting either," he added.</p>

"The two sides should support each other, rather than... suspect each other," Wang added. The ministry statement added that both countries have agreed on holding the next round of military commander-level talks on the border issue "as soon as possible". In 2020, India sought to limit investments from China as political tensions heightened between them. “I had actually landed from a plane, when I saw this man climbing up the Indian High Commission in London and was trying to pull down the flag… It got under my skin,” S Jaishankar said.<br />

“When people try to score points… personal points I just shrug it. When ‘I’ gets pushed, and that I is not me, but 'India'… That sense that you are not given respect and people are condescending, some times ambush you…,” the foreign minister added.</p>

It is the obligation of the receiving country to ensure the embassy or the high commission or the consulate and their premises are respected. These obligations were not met,” Jaishankar had stated at an event in Bengaluru.</p>

<p>During Saturday's Cape Town event, Jaishankar also said that India was no longer lumbering around at a relatively slow pace and lauded the scale of change taking place in the country.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When it comes to digital, I can assert with a great deal of confidence, that I see practices (and) efficiencies in India which I don't see even if I go to Europe and North America," Jaishankar said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"When we speak about the pace of transformation of these nine years, is really something that I think the Indian community abroad, the non-residents abroad and I would say even the friends and well-wishers of India abroad need to understand is something very powerful and very big that is going on," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The EAM also highlighted the achievements of the Narendra Modi government in its nine years in office through policy reforms and actions in various areas to raise the self-reliance of the citizens.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"A self-reliant India is not a protectionist India that is closing itself to the world. It is an India that is actually making more in India but making more for the world and making more with the world."</p>

<p>"For two decades, we have heard calls for reform of multilateral institutions, only to be continuously disappointed. It is, therefore, imperative that BRICS members demonstrate sincerity in regard to reforming global decision-making, including that of the UN Security Council," he said in his opening remarks at the BRICS foreign ministers’ meeting on Thursday (June 1).</p>

<p>The BRICS grouping consists of five of the largest developing countries in the world: Brazil, Russia, India, China, and South Africa.</p>

<p>Without mentioning China, which is a permanent member of the UNSC, Jaishankar reasoned that at the heart of the problems the countries faced was the economic concentration that left too many nations at the mercy of too few.</p>

<p>"This may be in regard to production, resources, services or connectivity. Recent experiences impacting health, energy and food security only highlight this fragility,” he said.</p>

<p>Apart from China, the other permanent members - or P5- of the UNSC are Russia, the United Kingdom, France and the United States and these countries can veto any substantive resolution.</p>

<p>The Indian minister called on the BRICS to send out a strong message that the world is multipolar, rebalancing and “that old ways cannot address new situations”.</p>

<p>“Contemporary challenges underline the deep shortcomings of the current international architecture, which does not reflect today’s politics, economics, demographics or indeed aspirations,” he added.</p>

<p>He said India, the current chair of the G20, undertook the&nbsp;voice of the Global South&nbsp;exercise to place these issues before the grouping.</p>

<p>"We urge that BRICS gives it particular consideration and promotes the economic decentralisation that is so essential to political democratisation," he said.</p>

<h2><strong>What has been the response of P5?</strong></h2>

<p>Apart from China, all the other major P5 countries have endorsed India’s position on UNSC reforms.</p>

<p>China, too, batted for constructive reforms, saying there should be representation for developing countries, especially the small and medium countries, but remained mum on India's inclusion at the high table of the permanent members.</p>

<p>The UNSC has been criticised for being a closed grouping, often out of touch with the ground reality and using the platform to serve selfish interests.</p>

<p>"Our government is currently looking at what the legal options are with respect to this matter," she told reporters, adding that an invitation has been issued to all BRICS heads of state.</p>

'We must act': India's Jaishankar calls for change in world order at BRICS foreign ministers' summit

<p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar has said the country is facing a "very complicated challenge" from China, and that steps have been taken by the government to ensure no attempts are made to unilaterally change the status quo in the border areas.<br />

On Saturday, Jaishankar added that this challenge has been "very visible" for the last three years in border areas, adding that both nations need to find an equilibrium in the relationship, however, it cannot be achieved just on the terms proposed by the other party.<br />

“If peace and tranquillity between the two nations is disturbed, their relationship will not remain unaffected,” the minister added in his speech on 'Modi's India: A Rising Power' at the Anant National University.<br />

"When I talk about big powers, of course, we have a particular challenge from China. That challenge is a very complicated challenge, but in the last three years it has been particularly visible in the border areas," Jaishankar stated while referring to the incursions of China in eastern Ladakh.</p>

"How can we get along long term if you don't respect me, if you are not sensitive to my concerns, if you ignore my interest?" he quizzed, further stating that if India will receive respect, sensitivity and recognition, then the country can hope for a better relationship with China.<br />

"But if we do not, I think we need to stand up for our rights, and we need to be firm in asserting opposition. And that, unfortunately, currently is the situation," he stated.</p>

India faces a 'very complicated challenge' from China, says S Jaishankar

<p>India's External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Tuesday schooled the European Union and its foreign policy chief Joseph Borrell after the latter called for action against&nbsp;Indian selling refined products made from Russian crude oil.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Urging&nbsp;Borrell to look inwards, Jaishankar said,&nbsp;"Look at EU Council regulations, Russian crude is substantially transformed in the third country and not treated as Russian anymore. I would urge you to look at Council's Regulation 833/2014."</p>

<p>Earlier,&nbsp;Borrell, in an interview with the Financial Times egged Brussels to crack down on India reselling Russian oil into Europe as refined fuel, including diesel.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If diesel or gasoline is entering Europe ... coming from India and being produced with Russian oil, that is certainly a circumvention of sanctions and member states have to take measures," the EU's chief diplomat said.</p>

<h2><strong>India's clear approach to serving its own interests</strong></h2>

<p>This is not the first instance when Jaishankar has stood up to the bully tactics of the West. Last year, the EU and other Western nations caused a row by calling out India repeatedly for buying Russian oil at discounted prices.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, Jaishankar&nbsp;took a rather strong approach and shut them by remarking, "Buying Russian gas is not funding the war."</p>

<p>"Why it's only Indian money and fund coming from India and not gas coming to Europe which funds war, let's be even-handed out," said Jaishankar at the Globsec 2022 Bratislava forum.</p>

<p>"Why countries in Europe and West and the United States, why don`t they allow Iranian oil in the market why don't they allow Venezuela oil to come to the market? They have squeezed every other source of oil we have and then say you will not go to the market and get the best deal for the people, it's not a fair approach," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In December last year, during a joint press conference&nbsp;with his German counterpart Annalena Baerbock, Jaishankar once again laid bare the facts and exposed the West for its hypocrisy.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Our trade with Russia is at a very small level- USD 12-13 billion, in comparison to European countries. We've also given the Russians a set of products... I don't think people should read more into it other than the legitimate expectations of any trading country to increase its trade," said the EAM.&nbsp;</p>

India's foreign minister Dr S Jaishankar, while addressing reporters at the conclusion of the meet, said that the meet laid out the ground for the status of multilateral decisions that will be approved at the upcoming SCO summit in July in New Delhi.</p>

<p>"The meeting also gave an opportunity to dwell on the state of multilateral cooperation in SCO to address regional and global issues of interest," Dr S. Jaishankar said.</p>
