<p>Subtly targeting China and its ally, Pakistan, Jaishankar said that the international community "must isolate and expose those countries that harbour terrorists, provide safe havens and condone terrorism".</p>

<h2><strong>Combating Terrorism</strong></h2>

<p>Jaishankar emphasised the need for a "decisive response" to cross-border terrorism and stressed the importance of "resolutely" countering terrorism financing and recruitment.</p>

<p>"We should also take proactive steps to prevent the spread of radicalisation among our youth," he said.</p>

<p>"Many of us have faced terrorism originating beyond our borders. Left unchecked, it threatens regional and global peace. Terrorism in any form or manifestation cannot be justified or condoned," he asserted.</p>

<p>He also highlighted the importance of preventing radicalisation among youth and called for proactive steps in this direction.</p>

<p>Jaishankar also delivered PM Narendra Modi's remarks at the extended format meeting of the SCO Council of Heads of State, highlighting terrorism as a foremost challenge.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The truth is that it (terrorism) continues to be used by nations as a tool of destabilisation. We have had our own experiences with cross-border terrorism. Let us be clear that terrorism in any form or manifestation cannot be justified or condoned. Harbouring terrorists must be strongly condemned," said Jaishankar.</p>

<p>"We cannot have double standards in this regard."</p>

<h2><strong>Geo-Economic Partnerships and Connectivity</strong></h2>

<p>Turning to geo-economics, Jaishankar highlighted the need for multiple, reliable, resilient supply chains, inviting partnerships. He said India is open to partnering with others in capacity building, especially with Global South nations, reported&nbsp;PTI.</p>

<p>He also noted the current global debate on new connectivity linkages and stressed that it requires joint efforts.</p>

<p>"It must also be respectful of sovereignty and territorial integrity of states and be built on the foundation of non-discriminatory trade and transit rights to neighbours," said Jaishankar, indirectly referencing China's contested territorial claims.</p>

SCO summit: India urges global action against terror-harbouring nations

<p>India's external affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has indicated that plans are afoot to organise the India Africa summit. The last such summit happened in 2015 in Delhi and while work was on to organise it last year it could not materialise. The 2015 India Africa summit was attended by leaders and representatives from all 54 African nations and the African Union, making it one of the largest gatherings of African leaders outside Africa.</p>

<p>Speaking at Africa Day, EAM said, "India and Africa must engage and must work together very closely. In this regard, we look forward to organising the IAFS IV Summit, and we seek your support to do so. We hope that the event would provide a more contemporary agenda of cooperation between us."</p>

<p>At the Africa Day celebrations in Delhi, Dr S Jaishankar detailed Delhi's support for the continent. Nearly 40,000 Africans have been trained in India under the Indian Technical and Economic Cooperation (ITEC) programme. Under the programme, since 2019, more than 15,000 youths from 22 African countries have received scholarships for various degree and diploma courses in disciplines such as computer applications, business administration, commerce, social sciences, and humanities.</p>

<p>Currently, over 23,000 African students live and study in India. Indian govt has also established several educational institutions in Africa, including the Indian Institute of Technology in Zanzibar (Tanzania), the National Forensic Science University in Uganda, and Entrepreneurship Development Centres in Rwanda.</p>

<p>Dr Jaishankar also reiterated India's support for African representation in global governance structures. "Given our shared struggles, it is natural that we are supportive of a greater role for Africa in the United Nations and other multilateral fora," he said. He affirmed India's backing of the African Union’s ‘Ezulwini Consensus’ and the ‘Sirte Declaration,’ which call for significant reforms in the United Nations Security Council to include African representation. Under India's G20 Presidency, the African Union became a member of the G20, a major economic grouping.</p>

<h2><strong>Cross-border terror is not a policy for good neighbours: EAM</strong></h2>

<p>The foreign minister, while speaking on India's ties with Pakistan, said that "cross border terror cannot be the policy of good neighbours".</p>

<p>Later, while talking about the agenda regarding India's ties with Pakistan and China in the next 5 years, with&nbsp;the news agency ANI, Jaishankar said, "The relations with those countries are different, and the problems there are also different. Our focus with regard to China will be on finding a solution for the border issues and with Pakistan, we would want to find a solution to the issue of years-old cross-border terrorism."</p>

S Jaishankar assumes charge as India's EAM, says country's influence 'steadily growing'

<p>In May 2019, when India's outgoing External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj dialed former Foreign Secretary Dr S&nbsp;Jaishankar, the latter was buying books at a famous Khan Market bookstore in New Delhi. Swaraj's call took Jaishankar by surprise.</p>

<p>"I wasn't expecting it at all," Jaishankar said in an interview published on March 17, 2024.</p>

<p>The call was made to inform the then president for Tata group's global corporate affairs — a job Jaishankar took after his retirement in January 2018 —&nbsp;&nbsp;that he would be the next occupant of the South Block, one of the secretariat buildings in New Delhi that also houses External Affairs Ministry.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For the former Foreign Secretary (2015-2018), this was a homecoming of sorts.&nbsp;On May 31, 2019, Jaishankar was seated on the special dias created to seat all 57 ministers. <p>Amid the intensified protest against the Pakistan government in Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday reiterated India's stand on merging the illegally occupied region and said that "one day we will end the illegal occupation of the POK and the POK will join with India."</p>

<p>"These days, a lot of things are going on at the POK. You must have seen some incidents happening there. Now we (the Modi government) are very clear on this...POK is a part of India...it was always part of India, it will be part of India," EAM said during a media interaction at a seminar on Indian Capital Markets 'Roadmap for Viksit Bharat' at the National Stock Exchange (NSE) in Mumbai.</p>

<p>"And we have this intention. that one day we will end the illegal occupation of the POK and it will join with India. Now you see that the opposition is in the opposite direction," he added.</p>

<p>The minister also questioned those "who wanted to run Article 370, who was interested in it" referring to the criticism over the abrogation of the article by the BJP-led government in August 2019.</p>

<p>"If I talk about the record, then in the last five years, one of our great achievements was on Article 370. We will also say that the NDA's record and its thinking. The Modi government's thinking is how to integrate Kashmir with the country and how to further develop it. India's EAM reiterates 'Pakistan-Occupied Kashmir' will always be part our country

<p>India on Monday (May 13) reached a long-term agreement with Iran over the management of its Chabahar port, located strategically along the Gulf of Oman.&nbsp;India Ports Global Ltd &amp; Ports &amp; Maritime Organisation of Iran (PMO) signed the new 10-year contract. The Indian company will invest $120 million in the port and equip it with modern infrastructure.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Indian delegation to Iran was led by Minister of Ports, shipping and waterways Sarbananda Sonowal, while Iranian side was represented by Mehrdad Bazrpash, Minister for Roads &amp; Urban Development.</p>

We have been telling Canada saying look these are wanted criminals from India, you have given them visas. Many of them have come in false documentation and yet you allow them to live there. If you decide to import for political purposes people with very dubious, actually, very negative backgrounds, there will be issues, they have in some cases created problems in their own country as a result of their own policies. No, why would we fear, if something happens there, it is for them to worry about," he added.&nbsp;</p>

West Asia crisis: India's Jaishankar holds talks with Iranian, Israeli counterparts amidst heightened tensions

<p>External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said on Tuesday that India will definitely get permanent membership of the United Nations Security Council as there is a feeling in the world that it should get the position, but the country will have to work harder this time for it.</p>

<p>He was speaking during an interaction with intellectuals in Gujarat's Rajkot city and was asked by the audience on India's chances of becoming the permanent member of the world body.</p>

<p>The United Nations was formed around 80 years ago, and five nations - China, France, Russian Federation, the United Kingdom, and the United States - decided among themselves to become permanent members of its security council, Jaishankar said.</p>

<p>At that time, there were a total of around 50 independent countries in the world, which has over time increased to around 193, he said.</p>

<p>"But these five nations have kept their control, and it is strange that you have to ask them to give us their consent for a change. A few agree, a few others put forward their position with honesty, while others do something from behind," he said.</p>

<p>This has been going on for several years, the minister said.</p>

<p>"But now, there is a feeling across the world that this should change, and India should get a permanent seat. I see this feeling increasing every year," he said.</p>

<p>"We will definitely get it. But nothing big is ever achieved without hard work," Jaishankar said.</p>

<p>"We will have to work hard, and this time we will have to work even harder," he added.</p>

<p>The Union minister said India, Japan, Germany and Brazil have put forward a proposal together before the UN and he believes this will take the matter a bit forward.</p>

<p>"But we must build pressure, and when this pressure increases...There is a feeling in the world that the UN has weakened. There was a deadlock in the UN on the Ukraine war and no consensus was reached in the UN regarding Gaza. I think as this feeling increases, our chances of getting a permanent seat will increase," he said.</p>

<p>When asked about baby girl Ariha Shah, who was taken away from her Indian parents by authorities in Germany and sent to foster care, Jaishankar said he was personally aware of the matter and monitoring it.</p>

<p>"The girl has been given to the child services. We are dissatisfied with this. We do not want the child to be raised as per the German culture. Her parents have moved the court and the matter is being heard," the minister said.</p>

<p>"At my level I have raised the issue with my counterpart. Our effort is to find some solutions," he added.</p>

<p>In his address at the event, Jaishankar said India has proved in the last 10 years that democracy can deliver.</p>

<p>The world is amazed at India moving towards 7 per cent growth despite the COVID-19 pandemic hampering growth, he said.</p>

<p>"The world believes that India as the fastest growing large economy can become the engine of global growth," he said. The world understands that India has technological talent, he added.</p>

<p>World agencies such as the UN understand India's achievements in social sectors like access to water, electricity, roads, health, schooling, etc, the external affairs minister further said.</p>

<p>"We should understand that being the fifth largest economy, on the way to becoming the third largest and with the biggest population, the world believes us to be talented people and expects us to contribute to resolve challenges," he added.</p>

Responding to queries about India's stance, he said that countries deemed as "big bullies" do not extend substantial assistance to their neighbours in times of need, in a comment directed at New Delhi's timely assistance to Sri Lanka during the country's economic crisis early on in 2022.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Jaishankar underlined India's significant support, stating, "Big bullies don’t provide a whopping aid of USD 4.5 billion to help neighbours when in distress. Big bullies don’t supply vaccines to other countries when Covid&nbsp;is on or make exceptions to their own rules to respond to food demands or fuel demands or fertiliser demands because some war in some other part of the world has complicated their lives."</p>

<p>During the event, the minister highlighted the positive shifts in India's relations with neighbouring countries, citing advancements in power grids, road infrastructure, and port usage. The 'neighbourhood first' policy is&nbsp;the premier foreign policy focus of Prime Minister Narendra Modi's administration under which India maintains good relations with countries in its immediate neighbourhood.</p>

<p>He specifically pointed to improved bilateral relations with countries such as Bangladesh and Nepal, emphasising the growth in trade, investments, and travel with nations like Sri Lanka, Bhutan, and the Maldives.</p>

<p>The family of an Indian-origin student who passed away in Canada due to a cardiac arrest on Friday (Feb 16) is seeking assistance from External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar to repatriate his body to India. The student has been identified as Shaik Muzammil Ahmed, a Hyderabad resident.</p>

<p>On X, formerly Twitter, Amjad Ullah Khan, a leader from the Telangana-based political party Majlis Bachao Tehreek (MBT), confirmed the news of the 25-year-old student's death and stated that Ahmed's family has sought assistance from Union Minister S Jaishankar.</p>

<p>According to Khan, Ahmed, a Master's student in IT at Conestoga College in Ontario, had been suffering from a fever for the past week. On Friday, his family received a call from a friend informing them of his sudden demise.</p>
