<h2><strong>China’s foreign minister to travel to Pakistan</strong></h2>

<p>China’s Minister for Foreign Affairs Qin Gang will travel to Pakistan after attending the two-day SCO foreign ministers’ meet in India’s Goa. Pakistan counterpart Bilawal Bhutto Zardari will also attend the event. He will be the first Pakistani foreign minister to visit India in nearly 12 years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"My decision to attend this meeting illustrates Pakistan’s strong commitment to the charter of SCO. I look forward to constructive discussions with my counterparts from friendly countries," he wrote in one of his tweets.</p>

<p>India's External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar is set to embark on a visit to Sweden and Brussels next month, where he will engage with several of his counterparts on a range of issues spanning trade to security. The visit will see him participate in the EU's second Indo-Pacific ministerial forum, scheduled to take place in Stockholm on May 13. Several EU member countries have issued their outlooks on the region, where one of the biggest concerns has been China's aggressive actions from the South China Sea to the Himalayas, bordering India.</p>

The Indo-Pacific region is set to account for 60 per cent of global wealth and three-fifths of the world's population, making it the centre of global attention.</p>

<p>The External Affairs Minister will also travel to Brussels for ministerial meetings related to the India EU Trade and Technology Council (TTC), which will focus on digital transformation, green technologies, and trade. European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and Prime Minister Narendra Modi agreed to launch the EU-India Trade and Technology Council last year. Ministerial meetings of the TTC will take place at least once a year, alternating between the EU and India.</p>

The Indian community in Uganda, concentrated mainly in Kampala and Jinja, have presented the strongest and most durable economic and cultural links between the two countries.</p>

<p>In Mozambique, India's deepening economic interests in natural gas and coal industries have become the most significant driver of the bilateral relationship. Indian companies have invested heavily in Mozambique's energy resources, amounting to almost a quarter of India's total FDI in Africa. Prime Minister Modi's State Visit to Mozambique, which was his first destination in continental Africa, helped raise the level of the bilateral relationship.</p>

<p>The EAM's upcoming visit to Uganda and Mozambique reflects India's commitment to the African continent and highlights the country's growing economic and cultural ties to the region. The visit comes ahead of the EAM's trip to Latin America at the end of the month, where he will visit Panama, Guyana, Colombia, and the Dominican Republic to strengthen ties with the region.</p>

Jaishankar warns Khalistan supporters, says India won't accept its national flag being pulled down

<p>India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar blamed the UK for not providing enough security at the Indian High Commission in London that was vandalised by the pro-Khalistan protesters.</p>

<p>During an event of BJP party’s youth wing in southern Bengaluru city, Jaishankar accused the British government of not meeting its obligations for the security of diplomatic missions, saying that India would not accept differential standards of security.</p>

<p>He was displeased with the security arrangements provided at the Indian High Commission, even though the Indian authorities had remained vigilant at British High Commission in the capital New Delhi when a protest was taking place to condemn the Khalistani attack on Indian mission in London.</p>

<p>“On the flag and the security of the high commission, in this particular case in the UK – whenever any country sends an embassy anywhere abroad, it is the obligation of the receiving country to provide security for a diplomat to do his work.”</p>

<p>“It is the obligation of the receiving country to ensure the embassy or the high commission or the consulate and their premises are respected. These obligations were not met,” Jaishankar&nbsp;said.</p>

<p>Without naming the UK, the minister claimed that many countries are “very casual” about security and slammed “this kind of differential standards”.</p>

<p>“Many countries are very casual about it (security). They have a very different view about their own security and a different view about other people’s security, but I can tell you as a foreign minister that we are not going to accept this kind of differential standards,” said the minister.</p>

We would hope host governments provide full and adequate protection to our missions as well as to the personnel working there…We are not interested in just assurances, I think we would like to see action,” he said.</p>

<p>Last week, pro-Khalistan protesters took down the Indian flag, which triggered a furious response in New Delhi.</p>

<p>After the UK deputy high commissioner was summoned, the security barriers outside the UK high commission and the UK envoy’s residence in New Delhi were removed. The Metropolitan police said they had arrested a man “on suspicion of violent disorder”.</p>

He was speaking at an exhibition on Sri Lankan architect Geoffrey Bawa, marking the 75th anniversary of Indo-Lanka diplomatic relations. The exhibition, "Geoffrey Bawa: It is Essential to be There," featured over 120 documents from the Bawa archives, including a section on unbuilt work and Bawa’s own photographs from his travels.</p>

<p>Jaishankar went on to explain the cultural ties between India and Sri Lanka, including grants to promote Buddhist ties, heritage restoration of temples, and exchanges between the two countries. "Culture is one expression of our people-to-people exchanges," he said. The External Affairs Minister also spoke about how Indian and Sri Lankan societies have been "linked for millennia in a variety of ways, including language, faith, and customs."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Slamming the United States, Lavrov said that some countries under pressure said certain things or voted in a certain manner to relieve themselves from American pressure. But he pointed out that no developing country joined sanctions because they are aware of what kind of game the West is playing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Russian foreign minister also said that his country never stood against any state or any country developing foreign ties with any other state.&nbsp;</p>

This comes after Indian tax authorities carried out searches at the British broadcaster's offices in New Delhi and Mumbai.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Here's is what happened:&nbsp;</strong></p>

<p>1. Cleverly, who raised the issue of tax searches, was told by New Delhi on Wednesday that all entities operating in India must comply fully with relevant laws and regulations, the news agency Reuters reported, citing a source in the Narendra Modi government.&nbsp;</p>

<p>2.&nbsp;Last month, Indian tax authorities spent three days searching the BBC's offices in New Delhi and Mumbai, cloning data from the digital devices of some senior employees.&nbsp;</p>

<p>3.&nbsp;The searches came after the central government severely criticised the screening of the British broadcaster's documentary about the 2002 Gujarat riots. The government said that the searches were not related to the documentary.&nbsp;</p>

<p>4. On Wednesday, James Cleverly did not share details of his conversation with Indian Foreign Minister Jaishankar but said the vast bulk of the talks were about the positive bilateral work.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"The conversations I had with him are best to keep with him. I did raise it," the British foreign minister said. "One of the advantages of having such a strong and professional relationship with Dr Jaishankar is I am able to bring up, and indeed he brings up with me, some of these sensitive issues. I did raise it with him," he added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>5. On being asked if there were concerns about civil liberties in India, Cleverly said, "We want to ensure that values that both our countries feel strongly about are upheld. That means working together on a range of issues."</p>

<p>Meanwhile, Indian foreign minister Jaishakar tweeted on Wednesday that he and Cleverly exchanged views on the global situation as well as the G20 agenda.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"As per the information available with the ministry (external affairs ministry), the number of Indians who renounced their Indian citizenship was 1,31,489 (in 2015); 1,41,603 (in 2016); 1,33,049 (in 2017); 1,34,561 (in 2018); 1,44,017 (in 2019); 85,256 (in 2020); 1,63,370 (in 2021) and 2,25,620 (in 2022). For reference purposes, data was 1,22,819 (in 2011); 1,20,923 (in 2012); 1,31,405 (in 2013); 1,29,328 (in 2014)," Jaishankar said, news agency IANS reported.&nbsp;</p>

<p>To a specific query, Jaishankar said that five Indian nationals obtained citizenship of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) during the last three years. The foreign minister also provided a list of 135 countries whose citizenship Indians acquired, a report by news agency PTI said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Meanwhile, in response to a separate question, Minister of State for External Affairs V Muraleedharan said on Thursday that the Narendra Modi led-central government was aware of professionals having been laid off by US companies in recent months.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Of these, a certain percentage is likely to be Indian nationals on H-1B and L1 visas. The Government of India has consistently raised issues relating to the movement of high skilled workers, including IT professionals, with the US government," Muraleedharan told the Rajya Sabha. The minister added that the government had been working with various stakeholders, including industry organisations and business chambers on the above issues.&nbsp;</p>

<p>India’s External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar is expected to make a visit to crisis-ridden Sri Lanka this week to discuss the debt restructuring process.&nbsp;“On January 19, the Indian foreign minister is expected to visit and we will continue to have debt restructuring talks with India,” Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe said, according to PTI news agency.</p>

<p>The Sri Lankan president informed said that the country will be receiving $2.5 billion from the IMF, and nearly $5 billion from the World Bank and the Asian Development Bank.</p>

<p>“The total will be $7.5 billion. Adding the $3 billion from the restructuring of unprofitable government agencies can add up to $10 billion, which will enable the economy to recover and bring the country out of this suffering," he added.</p>

<p>China, Japan, and India are Sri Lanka’s three largest bilateral creditors, and it is believed that Colombo is counting on their cooperation for economic revival.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka has been trying to get financial assurances from its major creditors, in order to secure a bailout package from the IMF.</p>

<p>The IMF bailout has been put on a halt as Sri Lanka pursues talks with creditors to meet the global lender’s condition for the facility.</p>

<p>Wickremesinghe said that he was looking forward to the IMF facility in three-four tranches, adding, “I want to lift this country out of the plunge sooner.”</p>

<p>The debt restructuring talks with Sri Lanka’s creditors began in September last year as warranted by its agreement with the IMF for the $2.9 billion facility over four years.</p>

<p>Since being hit by the unprecedented financial crisis in 2022, the worst since its independence from Britain in 1948, India has been providing financial assistance to its neighbours of nearly $4 billion during the year.</p>

<p>In January, India announced a $900 million loan to Sri Lanka to build up its depleted foreign reserves as the financial crisis began to unfold.</p>

<p>Later, it offered a USD 500 million credit line to Sri Lanka to fund the country's fuel purchases.</p>

<p>The credit line was later expanded to USD 700 million due to the sheer gravity of the situation.</p>

<p>Sri Lanka has been using Indian credit lines since early 2022 to import essentials and fuel after street protests erupted due to severe shortages of essentials.</p>

<p>The sixth India-US Forum is scheduled to take place in India’s capital New Delhi this week and will be addressed by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, US Secretary of state Antony Blinken, among other top officials from the two sides.</p>

<p>The meet will take place from January 13 to January 14 and will be convened by Ananta Centre and India's Ministry of External Affairs.</p>

<p>Other officials who will speak at the forum will be Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri, Senior Director for Defense, White House National Security Council Cara Abercrombie, Assistant Secretary, South &amp; Central Asian Affairs, Department of State, &nbsp;Donald Lu, &nbsp;Additional Secretary, Americas Division, Ministry of External Affairs,&nbsp;Vani Rao.</p>

<p>Conversations held at the forum are under the Chatham House Rules and the main discussions of this year will cover the Indo-Pacific, Russia-Ukraine, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, defence production, emerging tech, data governance, and G20 among others.</p>

<p>The timing of the forum coincides with the 13th India-US Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meet in Washington DC on Wednesday.</p>

<p>India's trade minister Piyush Goyal will make a four-day visit to the US on January 9 and will attend the trade policy forum meet and hold talks with USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo.</p>

<p>The Indian minister will also meet with business leaders both in New York, and Washington, other than the engagement with the members of the diaspora.</p>

<p>A commerce ministry release said that the forum is a "platform for continuous engagement between two countries in the area of trade and to further the trade and investment relations between the two countries".</p>

<p>The 12th TPF Ministerial meeting was held on November 23, 2021, after a gap of four years in New Delhi. Working groups were reactivated after the last ministerial.</p>

<p>The India-US ties have seen increased engagement in the past few years, from trade to people-to-people relations to political convergences to Defence. Both countries are working together under QUAD, I2U2 (India-Israel/ UAE-USA) and IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework).</p>

The sixth India-US Forum is scheduled to take place in India’s capital New Delhi this week and will be addressed by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, US Secretary of state Antony Blinken, among other top officials from the two sides.

The sixth India-US Forum is scheduled to take place in India’s capital New Delhi this week and will be addressed by External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar, US Secretary of state Antony Blinken, among other top officials from the two sides. The meet will take place from January 13 to January 14 and will be convened by Ananta Centre and India's Ministry of External Affairs. Other officials who will speak at the forum will be Deputy National Security Advisor Vikram Misri, Senior Director for Defense, White House National Security Council Cara Abercrombie, Assistant Secretary, South & Central Asian Affairs, Department of State, Donald Lu, Additional Secretary, Americas Division, Ministry of External Affairs, Vani Rao. Conversations held at the forum are under the Chatham House Rules and the main discussions of this year will cover the Indo-Pacific, Russia-Ukraine, Afghanistan-Pakistan relations, defence production, emerging tech, data governance, and G20 among others. The timing of the forum coincides with the 13th India-US Trade Policy Forum (TPF) meet in Washington DC on Wednesday. India's trade minister Piyush Goyal will make a four-day visit to the US on January 9 and will attend the trade policy forum meet and hold talks with USTR Ambassador Katherine Tai and US Secretary of Commerce Gina Raimondo. The Indian minister will also meet with business leaders both in New York, and Washington, other than the engagement with the members of the diaspora. A commerce ministry release said that the forum is a "platform for continuous engagement between two countries in the area of trade and to further the trade and investment relations between the two countries". The 12th TPF Ministerial meeting was held on November 23, 2021, after a gap of four years in New Delhi. Working groups were reactivated after the last ministerial. The India-US ties have seen increased engagement in the past few years, from trade to people-to-people relations to political convergences to Defence. Both countries are working together under QUAD, I2U2 (India-Israel/ UAE-USA) and IPEF (Indo-Pacific Economic Framework). WATCH WION LIVE HERE:
