Danish police, on Monday (Feb 26) said that they are closing the investigation into the 2022 sabotage of the Nord Stream pipelines carrying Russian gas to Germany. This comes weeks after Swedish prosecutors also dropped the probe and said they would hand over the evidence uncovered to the German investigators.

Blasts were ‘intentional’: Denmark

Months after Russia launched its full-scale invasion of Ukraine, the multi-billion dollar Nord Stream 1 and 2 pipelines which transport gas under the Baltic Sea were ruptured by a series of blasts that occurred in the Swedish and Danish economic zones.

The investigation by the Danish police concluded that the blasts were “intentional” but said there is no “necessary basis” for pursuing a criminal case in Denmark.

“Based on the investigation, the authorities can conclude that the sabotage of the pipelines was intentional,” said the Copenhagen police, in a statement. It added, “At the same time, it is also assessed that there is not the necessary basis for pursuing a criminal case in Denmark.”

The investigation, carried out by Denmark’s intelligence service PET and the Copenhagen police, had been “complicated and extensive”, said the statement. However, it added that it was not in a position to “provide further comments” in the case.

In September 2022, leaks were discovered in three of the four gas lines near the Danish island of Bornholm in the Baltic Sea. The seismic institutes had recorded two large underwater explosions just before the leaks which released vast amounts of methane into the water and air.

‘Close to absurd’: Russia reacts

The decision by the police in Copenhagen immediately drew criticism from Russia. “The situation is close to absurd. On the one hand, they recognise that a deliberate sabotage took place, but on the other hand they are not moving forward,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told journalists.

Russia has blamed the United States, the United Kingdom, and Ukraine for the blasts, which cut off Russian gas supply to its lucrative European market. However, the countries have denied responsibility.

Meanwhile, some Western officials have said Russian naval vessels were in the area at the time of the blasts.

Sweden closes investigation; Germany to continue

Swedish prosecutors, on Wednesday (Feb 7) said that they have dropped their investigation into the case.

“The conclusion of the investigation is that Swedish jurisdiction does not apply and that the investigation therefore should be closed,” the Swedish Prosecution Authority said in a statement.

The Danish police had previously confirmed that the pipelines were hit by powerful explosions and Swedish investigators confirmed traces of explosives on the site showing that sabotage had taken place.

Swedish prosecutors concluded that nothing had emerged to indicate that Sweden or Swedish citizens were involved in the attack which took place “in international waters” and therefore their “jurisdiction does not apply.”

Meanwhile, the German government is still “very interested” in getting to the bottom of the reported sabotage, a spokesperson said in Berlin on Monday and will continue to investigate the incident.

A 23-year-old Indian was reported killed in a Ukrainian drone strike in the Donetsk region near the Russia-Ukraine border. Hemil Ashvinbhai Mangukiya hailed from Gujarat state and was reportedly employed by the Russian army as a security helper.

He began working for the army in December 2023. The same month, an agent on behalf of his father had written to the Indian consulate in Moscow to facilitate the repatriation of Mangukiya.

As per media reports, the Russian Army has recruited over 100 Indians to fight in its ongoing war in Ukraine, a fact acknowledged by India’s foreign ministry just two days back.

“We know that a few Indian nationals have signed up for support jobs with the Russian Army. The Indian Embassy has regularly taken up this matter with the relevant Russian authorities for their early discharge,” said MEA spokesman Randhir Jaiswal.

It has been reported that most of these Indians were treated unfairly by the Russian authorities, prompting them to seek assistance from the Indian government.

The Ukrainian government said on Sunday (Feb 25) that 50 per cent of arms deliveries by the West do not arrive on time. Addressing a televised conference in Kyiv, Ukrainian Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said, "Since the situation is always dynamic at the moment commitment doesn't constitute delivery. 50% of commitments are not delivered on time." "So which means that in the mathematics of war, we'll look to the enemy - their economy is almost 2 trillion. They used up to 15% official and unofficial budget for the war, which constitutes over 150 billion USD. So, annually, it's officially. So basically, whatever committed that doesn't come on time we'll lose people, we'll lose territories," Defence Minister Umerov added. As the conflict has entered its third year, the Ukrainian military is struggling to stave off Russian forces along the sprawling front line. The military in Ukraine's east and south is outgunned and outnumbered, and Russia has secured its first territorial gain in almost a year. Ukraine has signed security deals (that are 10 years long) with its Western allies to defend itself against Russian attacks. The security deals promise continued provision of military and security aid, support to develop Ukraine's defence industrial base, training Ukrainian soldiers, intelligence-sharing and cooperation, and support for cyber defence. Last week, Denmark became the latest NATO member to sign an agreement on security cooperation with Kyiv, the news agency Reuters reported. 'Ukraine tripled weapons production in 2023' Umerov's remarks came as Ukrainian Strategic Industries Minister Oleksandr Kamyshin said on Sunday that his country tripled its weapons production last year and 500 companies were currently working in the defence sector. "Last year, our defence industry produced three times more than in 2022. Our capabilities for 2023 are six times larger than in the previous year. As of today, we have almost half of these capabilities contracted for 2024. We work together with the ministry of defence and the defence forces to secure further contracts (manufacturing)," Strategic Industries Minister Kamyshin said. The conflict between Russia and Ukraine has entered its third year. Troops of the Ukrainian military in the country's east and south are outgunned and outnumbered, and Russia has secured its first territorial gain in almost a year. The war between the two countries started on February 24, 2022, and there are no signs of the conflict ending anytime soon. Ukraine is currently discussing security deals with Western allies to defend itself against Russian attacks, the news agency Reuters reported on Friday (Feb 23). The Group of Seven (G7) countries signed a declaration at the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit in Vilnius in July 2023 committing to establish "long-term security commitments and arrangements" with Ukraine that would be negotiated bilaterally. The declaration has been signed by more than 30 countries so far. What are these security deals about? The security deals (which are 10 years long) promise continued provision of military and security aid, support to develop Ukraine's defence industrial base, training Ukrainian soldiers, intelligence-sharing and cooperation, and support for cyber defence. Also read | Europeans rally to support Ukraine as war with Russia enters third year When it comes to cyber defence, the deals include assistance to help Ukraine protect its networks from Russian cyberattacks and counter disinformation, a report by The Record said. Which countries have signed the deals? Germany, France, the United Kingdom (UK), Canada, and Italy have signed the security deals with Ukraine. On Friday (the eve of the war), Denmark became the latest NATO member to sign an agreement on security cooperation with Kyiv. Denmark is also the first non-G7 country to sign a deal with Ukraine. The agreement with France provides an additional package worth $3.2 billion in military aid this year, the largest amount Paris has given to Ukraine since the conflict started. The agreement with Germany provides Ukraine with another $1.2 billion package of military, including 36 howitzers, 120,000 rounds of artillery ammunition and two more air-defence systems. Ukraine had signed its first such deal with the UK in January. The package is worth $3.2 billion, surpassing the previous annual commitments by $233 million, the Rishi Sunak government said. Also read | UK PM Rishi Sunak assures Ukraine’s triumph with new artillery funding London said the deal formalised a range of support that it "has been and will continue to provide for Ukraine's security, including intelligence-sharing, cyber security, medical and military training, and defence industrial cooperation". During a visit to Paris earlier this month, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said “These three agreements ... give me confidence as president that we are not alone.” Which countries will soon sign the deals? As per the Reuters report on Friday, Zelensky's Foreign Affairs adviser Ihor Zhovkva said that Ukraine has held at least two rounds of talks on the agreements with all the G7 countries. Zhovkva said that over 10 countries were in the active stage of talks or potentially starting soon. On Friday, the Netherlands announced it would soon sign a 10-year security deal with Ukraine for continued military support, help in reconstruction and the improvement of its cyber defences. The additional countries that will sign the deal also include Poland and Romania. Ukraine's demands Zhovkva pointed out that there was no need for Ukraine to rush to agree to agreements. "I don't need 10 or 15 agreements concluded within one week. Rather, I would have these same 10 or 15 agreements deeply thought over, well-negotiated and with concrete signs of long-term and varied support for Ukraine," he said. The discussion of these agreements comes as top military generals in Ukraine have complained of growing shortages of both arms and soldiers. On Friday, President Zelensky pressed his allies to step up military supplies and vowed victory over Russia. Speaking to G7 leaders, Zelensky said their "vital support" would help Ukraine prevail on the battlefield. "Putin can lose this war. Two years of Ukraine war: World leaders visit Kyiv, Zelensky confident of victory

Russia Ukraine War News:Two years ago, on Feb 24, 2022, Russian President Vladimir Putin declared war on Ukraine citing "expansion of NATO to the east" as an existential threat to Russia and a violation of post-Cold War understanding between the then-leaders in Moscow and the Western capitals.

Since then, one more country — Finland — has become part of the US-led military alliance while another Russian neighbour, Sweden, is on course to enter NATO. But on the battlefield, two years of Russian advances, and Ukrainian counteroffensives have created a state of stalemate.

Russia controls just 18 per cent of Ukraine's internationally recognised territory. This is made up of 94 per cent of Luhansk Oblast, 73 per cent of Kherson Oblast, 72 per cent of Zaporizhzhia Oblast, and 54 per cent of Donetsk Oblast and Crimea. Notably, some of these territorial gains were made before February 24, 2022.

Since Ukraine’s failed counteroffensive in the summer of 2023, Russian forces have slowly inched forward, capturing the town of Avdiivka earlier this month after a months-long battle..

In the weeks after February 24, 2022, the economic picture for Moscow looked challenging for Russia as the Rouble crashed and foreign investors fled. But the war-related demand-supply chain fuelled and fulfilled by the military-industry complex came in handy. Add oil exports to the mix, and the Russian economy continued to withstand hundreds of Western sanctions as war raged on in Ukraine that gave Moscow control of Ukraine's all Black Sea ports except the port of Odesa.

In the second half of this two-year war period so far, an insurrection by the Wagner mercenary group in June 2023 led by Yevgeny Prigozhin, stunned the corridors of power in Moscow.

The present-day momentum in the war rests with Russia due to control of Ukrainian ports as well as psychological blow to Ukraine's wartime morale due to the fall of the most aggressively defended Ukrainian town of Avdiivka earlier this month.

The Ukrainian forces are also reportedly sensing an acute shortage of equipment and manpower amid dwindling support from Washington.

Russia, on the other hand, has been able to successfully re-adapt its wartime tactics with increased military conscription and support from its indigenous military-industry complex for the production of military equipment.

But nearly 45,000 Russians have been killed in action since February 2022, the independent outlet MediaZona has reported. To put this in context, this is three times the Red Army’s losses during its decade-long invasion of Afghanistan.

The United Kingdom (UK) imposed a fresh set of sanctions on Russia to mark the second anniversary of Moscow's war in Ukraine. In a post on X, the foreign office announced that more than 50 people sustaining Russian President Vladimir Putin's illegal war in Ukraine have been sanctioned. "Sanctions have deprived Russia’s war machine of an estimated $400 billion. Two years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion, we continue to stand with Ukraine," the post added. Foreign Secretary David Cameron said that sanctions are starving Putin of the resources he desperately needs to fund his struggling war. "Two years on from Russia’s full-scale invasion, we continue to support Ukraine as it fights for democracy – for as long as it takes," Cameron said in a post on the social media platform. "These new sanctions also target key sources of Russian revenue, clamping down on metals, diamonds, and energy trade, and cutting off funding for Putin’s illegal war from every angle," the statement added. Who have been sanctioned? Among those sanctioned include companies linked to manufacturing munitions such as rocket launch systems, missiles, explosives and other critical goods used in military equipment; key Russian importers and manufacturers of machine tools; oil trader Niels Troost and his company Paramount Energy & Commodities SA; Fractal Marine DMCC, Beks Ship Management, and Active Shipping; Russian diamond companies and five senior executives or owners of Russia’s top producers of copper, zinc and steel. Since the war started in Ukraine on Feb 24, 2022, the UK has sanctioned thousands of individuals, companies and groups under its Russia sanctions regime. "It's clear that the Russian authorities saw Navalny as a threat and they tried repeatedly to silence him... no one should doubt the oppressive nature of the Russian system," he added. Dismissing the sanctions, the Russian embassy in the UK said they were dishonest and London was interfering in internal Russian affairs and passing judgment before the investigation of Navalny's death was complete.

Russia claims to have taken over village of Pobieda in Ukraine's Donetsk region

Relatives of four Indian nationals have claimed that foreign recruiters in Russia duped their family members into joining the Wagner Group, which is a private military company and was earlier involved in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

22-year-old Mohammed Sufiyan, who belongs to the Indian state of Telangana, along with three other Indians hailing from Karnataka's Kalaburagi sent an SOS to their families after they were stranded in Russia and forced to join the Russian army in the fight against Ukraine, reported The Times Of India.

A video was sent by Sufiyan to his family in which he was seen in army fatigue and claimed that they had been a victim of recruitment fraud.

He added that the recruiters had sent them to Russia on December 23 after promising them jobs as security helpers, however, they were forced into fighting the Russia-Ukraine war against their will.

In the video, Sufiyan was heard saying, “Please save us, we are victims of a hi-tech fraud.”

Ukraine says that Russian troops have launched multiple attacks to the west of recently captured Avdiivka. Kyiv has accused Moscow of trying to attack beyond the city and force more gains on the battlefield. This comes after Russia claimed full control of Avdiivka.

Hours after Kyiv announced it had pulled out troops from Avdiivka, Russia on Saturday (Feb 17) said it had assumed "full control" of the eastern Ukrainian city. Kyiv said it had taken the decision to save the lives of its soldiers.

Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu said President Vladimir Putin had congratulated the military on "such an important victory".

The capture of Avdiivka, which lies in the Donetsk region of Ukraine, represents Russia's biggest victory in the war since May last year and signals that the conflict could drag on.

Former Ukrainian Armed Forces chief General Valery Zaluzhnyi had warned in December last year that Avdiivka would be taken over by the 'enemies' due to their persistence.

"The enemy has the ability to concentrate its forces, including artillery and aviation, in one direction or another. And they can make it so that in two-three months the town [Avdiivka] will have the same fate as Bakhmut,” said Zaluzhnyi at the time.

Ukraine's new military chief and Zaluzhnyi's successor, Oleksandr Syrsky Zaluzhnyi explained the decision to recall his troops.

"I decided to withdraw our units from the city and switch to defence on more favourable lines,” said Syrsky on Facebook.

"Our soldiers performed their military duty with dignity, did everything possible to destroy the best Russian military units and inflicted significant losses on the enemy," he added.

Kremlin has claimed Avdiivka to be part of Russia since a 2022 annexation that remains unrecognised by nearly all United Nations members. In July 2014, the region briefly fell into the hands of pro-Russian separatists before returning to Ukrainian control.

Prior to the war, the city housed around 30,000 inhabitants but since then, most of the houses have been destroyed and fewer than 1,000 residents remain, per local officials.

Putin congratulates military as Russia assumes 'full control' of Ukraine's Avdiivka

Ukrainian visa holders who arrived in the UK to escape the ongoing war with Russia will be given an additional 18-month extension to stay in Britain until at least September 2026, announced the Home Office on Sunday (Feb 18).

Since the start of the war nearly two years ago, more than 200,000 Ukrainians have sought sanctuary in the UK. Now, with the first visas issued in March 2022 set to expire next year, the Home Office said the new scheme would provide “certainty and assurance” for Ukrainians in the UK.

“This new visa extension scheme provides certainty and reassurance for Ukrainians in the UK on their future as this war continues, and we will continue to provide a safe haven for those fleeing the conflict,” said migration minister Tom Pursglov, adding that the extension would affect more than 283,000 Ukrainians.

Currently, Britain has two schemes for Ukrainian refugees - one for those having a family in the UK while the other allows Britons to offer accommodation to those fleeing the war.

Apart from extending the visa duration, Britain also said it would supply thousands of drones to Kyiv and urged US lawmakers to vote for a $95 billion security aid package for Ukraine and other allies.

Ukrainian visa holders who arrived in the UK to escape the ongoing war with Russia will be given an additional 18-month extension to stay in Britain until at least September 2026, announced the Home Office on Sunday (Feb 18).

Ukraine claims Russian shells and missile strikes at number of cities kill at least three

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Saturday (Feb 17) lashed out at Russia over its offensive in his country. Addressing the Munich Security Conference (MSC), President Zelensky said, "Feb 24 (when the war started) could have marked the end of the world we know. Every outbreak of war risks turning into a worldwide catastrophe."

On the Ukrainian military withdrawing from the eastern town of Avdiivka, Zelensky said the main aim of this pullback was to "save our soldiers' lives." He pointed out that Ukraine's battle to repel Russian troops was being held back by a lack of long-range weapons and artillery shells.

"Keeping Ukraine in the artificial deficits of weapons, particularly in a deficit of artillery and long-range capabilities, allows Putin to adapt to the current intensity of the war," the Ukrainian president told the conference.

In a veiled reference to the death of Kremlin critic Alexei Navalny, Zelensky said that human life was worthless to the Russian state. "Russian President Vladimir Putin kills whoever he wants, be it an opposition leader or whoever is a target for him. Dictators do not go on vacation," he added.

The Munich Security Conference started on Friday and will go on till Sunday.

Zelensky landed in Munich as the war with Russia nears its third year. This is his first foreign trip since he replaced his popular army chief and reshuffled his military command.

President Vladimir Putin wants Russian families to have more children, at least two, for the nation's ethnic survival.

He said on Thursday (Feb 15) that the families must have three or more children for the country to develop and thrive.

Reports backed by the West indicate that ever since the Ukraine war began in February 2022, Russia has suffered significant losses. But Moscow hasn't unacknowledged such reposts yet.

"If we want to survive as an ethnic group - well, or as ethnic groups inhabiting Russia - there must be at least two children," he said.

Ukraine war: Rocket attack on Russian city of Belgorod kills at least six

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres slammed countries that are buying weapons at the cost of policies to tackle global warming and hunger. His comments came even as a major think tank said in an annual assessment report that global defence spending increased by nine per cent last year, hitting a record high of $2.2 trillion.

‘Distressing to see’

“It is distressing to see governments spending heavily on arms, while starving budgets for food security, climate action, and broader sustainable development,” said Guterres, on Tuesday (Feb 13) during a UN Security Council meeting on links between food, climate and conflict crises.

He also spoke about how the “deadly nexus of hunger, climate chaos, and conflict” and the threat it poses to international peace and security can be broken with policies that address all three issues “together”.

The UN chief also warned that without action “the situation will deteriorate” as conflicts around the world are “multiplying”.

He added, “The climate crisis is set to spiral, as emissions continue to rise. And acute food insecurity has been increasing year on year.”

The UN climate chief Simon Stiell further emphasised the links between the three issues and told the Security Council that combined their impact is “devastating.”

“There is no national security without food security. And there will be no food security without enhanced action to stop climate change,” Stiell said.

World faces a ‘dangerous decade’

On the same day, a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) highlighted that countries spent a record amount on defence last year and attributed it to heightened geopolitical tensions. It also noted that expenditure on defence across the world will rise further in 2024.

“The current military-security situation heralds what is likely to be a more dangerous decade, characterised by the brazen application by some of military power to pursue claims – evoking a ‘might is right’ approach – as well as the desire among like-minded democracies for stronger bilateral and multilateral defence ties in response,’’ the report said.

In 2023, global defence spending rose nine per cent to $2.2 trillion, according to the report, with the Russian invasion of Ukraine entering its third year and amid concerns that China and other militarily powerful states may try to impose their will on neighbouring countries.

The expenditure is expected to rise in 2024, said the IISS, amid international uncertainty as the situation in the Middle East deteriorates in the wake of the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza.

The conflict seems to be spreading as Iranian-backed militant groups including Yemen-based Houthis and Lebanon-based Hezbollah have entered the fray and the United States launching retaliatory attacks against the forces in the region.

The report also highlighted rising tensions in the Arctic, North Korea’s missile tests and pursuit of nuclear weapons, and the rise of military regimes in the Sahel region of Africa as contributors to a “deteriorating security environment.”

The report by the London-based think tank is an annual estimate of the global military situation for 65 years. The near two-digit hike in the spending on arms reflects a “deteriorating security landscape,” said Bastian Giegerich, the IISS director general.

Notably, the increase is even steeper among NATO countries which have supported Ukraine amid fears of further Russian incursions into Europe.

According to the report, major non-NATO allies have boosted military spending by 32 per cent since Russia annexed Ukraine’s Crimean peninsula in 2014.

‘Distressing to see’ “It is distressing to see governments spending heavily on arms, while starving budgets for food security, climate action, and broader sustainable development,” said Guterres, on Tuesday (Feb 13) during a UN Security Council meeting on links between food, climate and conflict crises. WATCH | Israel-Hamas war: Israel faces growing pressure over Gaza ceasefire He also spoke about how the “deadly nexus of hunger, climate chaos, and conflict” and the threat it poses to international peace and security can be broken with policies that address all three issues “together”. The UN chief also warned that without action “the situation will deteriorate” as conflicts around the world are “multiplying”. He added, “The climate crisis is set to spiral, as emissions continue to rise. And acute food insecurity has been increasing year on year.” The UN climate chief Simon Stiell further emphasised the links between the three issues and told the Security Council that combined their impact is “devastating.” Also Read | NATO chief says 18 countries are expected to hit their defence spending target after Trump’s remarks “There is no national security without food security. And there will be no food security without enhanced action to stop climate change,” Stiell said. World faces a ‘dangerous decade’ On the same day, a report by the International Institute for Strategic Studies (IISS) highlighted that countries spent a record amount on defence last year and attributed it to heightened geopolitical tensions. Also Read | Ukraine claims it destroyed another Russian warship in Black Sea The report also highlighted rising tensions in the Arctic, North Korea’s missile tests and pursuit of nuclear weapons, and the rise of military regimes in the Sahel region of Africa as contributors to a “deteriorating security environment.” The report by the London-based think tank is an annual estimate of the global military situation for 65 years. (With inputs from agencies)

NATO chief, on Wednesday (Feb 14) said Europe had increased its spending on defence with 18 out of the alliance’s 31 countries expected to hit their target this year. This comes days after former United States president Donald Trump implied he would not defend the NATO allies who have not been able to spend enough on defence and would also encourage Russia to attack them.

“I expect 18 allies to spend 2% of their GDP on defence this year,” said NATO Secretary-General Jens Stoltenberg during a press conference. This year’s number is also up from 11 NATO members who were expected to reach the agreed target in 2023.

A narrowly divided US Senate passed a $95.34 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan on Sunday, showing undiminished bipartisanship despite opposition from Republican hardliners and Donald Trump.

The Democratic-led Senate voted 67-27 in a rare Sunday session to clear the latest procedural hurdle and moved the foreign aid measure toward an ultimate vote on passage in the coming days.

The money is viewed as crucial by Kyiv, as it grinds toward the second anniversary of Russia's invasion of Ukraine. But Senate passage would send the bill on to the Republican-controlled House of Representatives, where it faces an uncertain future.

Eighteen Republicans backed the legislation after Trump, the dominant Republican White House candidate, criticized the bill on social media by saying that the foreign aid should take the form of a loan. Trump also sparked exasperation at home and abroad by saying he would encourage aggression against NATO allies who do not pay their dues to the alliance.

Ahead of Sunday's vote, Senate Republican leader Mitch McConnell chided those who he said would disregard US global interests, bemoan American leadership and lament international commitments.

"This is idle work for idle minds, and it has no place in the United States Senate," McConnell said. "American leadership matters. And it is in question."

Democratic President Joe Biden, who has been seeking the aid for months, on Friday said Congress would be guilty of "neglect" if it failed to pass the measure.

The next Senate action is expected on Monday evening, when lawmakers are due to hold two procedural votes: one to adopt the foreign aid package as an amendment to an underlying House bill; and a second to limit debate ahead of a final vote on passage, which could come on Wednesday, according to aides.

The legislation includes $61 billion for Ukraine, $14 billion for Israel in its war against Hamas and $4.83 billion to support partners in the Indo-Pacific, including Taiwan, and deter aggression by China.

It also would provide $9.15 billion in humanitarian assistance to civilians in Gaza and the West Bank, Ukraine and other conflict zones around the globe.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who has a slim 219-212 Republican majority, has indicated that he could try to split the aid provisions into separate measures once the bill arrives from the Senate.

But a standalone aid bill for Israel fell victim in the House last week to opposition from Democrats who favour the broader Senate legislation and from hardline Republicans who wanted compensating spending cuts, in a pair of humiliating defeats for Johnson.

During a visit to Kyiv on Friday, a bipartisan delegation of House lawmakers vowed to do their part to pass the measure.

Senate Republicans believe bipartisan passage would help stir support among Republicans in the House.

"It will shape the environment such that ... more Republicans will feel comfortable advancing the bill," Senator Todd Young, an Indiana Republican, told reporters.

Republican support for the measure could grow and the pace of progress could quicken if Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer and his Republican counterpart, Mitch McConnell, can reach an agreement allowing votes on Republican amendments.

Republicans want amendments that could address the record flow of migrants across the U.S.-Mexico border and forgo humanitarian assistance provisions by restricting foreign aid to weapons and materiel.

But some Republicans who oppose further aid to Ukraine have vowed to delay consideration by forcing the Senate to comply with a labyrinth of time-consuming parliamentary rules

In his first remarks as the Ukraine's new commander-in-chief, Oleksandr Syrsky stated on Friday that the Ukrainian Army must alter its methods in order to defeat Russia.

In the largest change to Ukraine's military leadership since Russia's invasion started almost two years ago, the 58-year-old Oleksandr Syrsky took commander Valery Zaluzhny's position this week.

The seasoned general has a long list of issues to deal with, not the least of which is a 1,000-kilometre frontline that has not shifted much in more than a year of battle. In a social media post, he stated that the Army needs "clear and precise planning," "taking into account the needs of the frontline for the latest weapons given by international partners."

Washington and Brussels in particular are finding it difficult to maintain the aid programmes that have so far helped Kyiv resist Russia.

The Kremlin earlier on Friday downplayed the impact Ukraine's military shake-up would have on the battlefield.

Spokesman for the Kremlin Dmitry Peskov stated, "We don't think it's a factor that will influence the trajectory of the special military operation," using the word Moscow prefers to refer to its invasion.

Soon after Syrsky was appointed, Russia and Ukraine began firing drones at one another, hoping to hit locations far behind the immobile front line.

According to an AFP source in Kyiv's security services, Ukraine claimed responsibility for attacks on two different Russian oil refineries overnight that resulted in at least one significant fire.

The last two months have seen strikes on Russian oil and gas installations as part of what Kyiv has described as "fair" response against the infrastructure that Russia has used to fuel its conflict.

Trump says would let Russia ‘do whatever the hell it wants’ to NATO allies that don’t pay enough

Russian forces in occupied Ukraine are using terminals of Elon Musk’s satellite internet service Starlink, said Kyiv’s main military intelligence agency, on Sunday (Feb 11). The allegation by Ukrainian forces also comes amid media reports that Russia has been receiving Starlink internet terminals via an intermediary in the Middle East amid the ongoing war.

‘Systemic nature’

“Cases of the Russian occupiers’ use of the given devices have been registered. It is beginning to take on a systemic nature,” the Ukrainian defence ministry’s Main Directorate of Intelligence (GUR) quoted spokesman Andriy Yusov as saying.

In its post on Telegram, GUR also posted an audio clip of what it said was an exchange between two Russian soldiers that was intercepted by its forces, claiming it as proof of Starlink’s “systemic” use in the Russian-occupied territory.

The Ukrainian intelligence agency said Starlink terminals are being used by Russia’s 83rd Air Assault Brigade, which is fighting near the embattled towns of Klishchiivka and Andriivka in the partially occupied eastern region of Donetsk.

The Starlink terminals were rushed to help Ukraine during the initial days of the Russian invasion in February 2022 and have played a significant role in Kyiv’s battlefield communications.

Following media reports last week, Musk’s aerospace company, SpaceX, has said that it does not do any business with Russia’s government or military.

How is Russia accessing Starlink?

Starlink is the world’s first and largest satellite constellation which involves more than 2,000 satellites orbiting the Earth in communication with thousands of terminals on the ground to deliver broadband internet.

The audio clip which GUR posted on Telegram as evidence is said to be an exchange between two Russian soldiers discussing setting up the Starlink terminals. However, the Ukrainian agency did not say how Moscow’s forces were able to procure the terminals or if they were from another country or taken from Kyiv’s forces.

A report by Newsweek, an American weekly news magazine, citing a Ukrainian journalist and soldier said Russia’s military began delivering Starlink terminals en masse in occupied territories, referring to four regions of Ukraine that were illegally annexed by Russia in 2022 – Donetsk, Luhansk, Kherson and Zaporizhzhia.

SpaceX responds to reports

In response to the media reports last week, Starlink, in a statement on X said, “Starlink is not active in Russia, meaning service will not work in that country. SpaceX has never sold or marketed Starlink in Russia, nor has it shipped equipment to locations in Russia.”

“If SpaceX obtains knowledge that a Starlink terminal is being used by a sanctioned or unauthorized party, we investigate the claim and take actions to deactivate the terminal if confirmed,” it added.

‘Systemic nature’ “Cases of the Russian occupiers’ use of the given devices have been registered.
