Russia said on Saturday it had repelled an attempted Ukrainian drone attack on Russian "civilian transport ships" on Friday evening in the southwestern part of the Black Sea, a key artery for grain and oil exports from both countries.

Civilian vessels on the Black Sea have not generally been targeted since Moscow ordered its troops into Ukraine in February 2022, but last July both sides said they would start treating ships headed to the other's ports as potential carriers of military cargo.

In a statement posted on the Telegram messaging app, Russia's Defence Ministry said Ukraine had attempted what it called "a terrorist attack on Russian civilian transport ships using semi-submersible naval drones".

It said Russian patrol boats and warplanes had averted the attack, destroying one Ukrainian naval drone by artillery fire and disabling the rest by electronic warfare. No Russian civilian or military vessels were damaged, it said.

Reuters could not verify the Russian account. There was no immediate comment from Ukraine.

Last July, Russia refused to renew a Turkish-brokered deal providing for safe grain exports through the region and said all ships heading to Ukrainian ports would be treated as potential carriers of military cargo.

A day later, Ukraine said it would adopt the same stance on ships bound for Russian and Russian-controlled Ukrainian ports.

It was not clear precisely where the attack took place. The southwestern part of the Black Sea adjoins Turkey's Bosphorus Strait through which cargoes leaving the sea travel.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky on Thursday (Feb 8) appointed Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi as the new chief of the army. Colonel General Syrskyi replaced General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, who had clashed with Zelensky over a range of issues. Syrskyi, 58, has been the commander of the country's ground forces and has become the army chief at a challenging time. The war between Russia and Ukraine will soon enter its third year. The choice of Syrskyi as the army chief did not come as a surprise, as very few in the Ukrainian military have the experience and know-how to be able to fill the shoes of General Zaluzhnyi, a report by the news agency Associated Press said. Who is Oleksandr Syrskyi? Syrskyi was born in 1965 in the Soviet Union. Like many people of his age in Ukraine's armed forces, he studied in Moscow - at the Higher Military Command School - among peers who have since become Russian commanders. Also read | Putin tells Tucker Carlson Ukraine war can be over few weeks, in rare interview to US outlet Syrskyi served in the Soviet Artillery Corps for five years and has lived in Ukraine since the 1980s. The 58-year-old's battlefield successes have earned him the backing of his soldiers, the report said. A key player in Ukraine's response against Russia Syrskyi has played a key role in some of Ukraine's biggest victories against Russia since the conflict started on Feb 24, 2022. He oversaw the successful defence of the capital Kyiv in the early days of the invasion when many in Ukraine still rejected Western warnings that a Russian attack seemed imminent. Syrskyi was conferred with the Hero of Ukraine award, the country’s highest honour, for his role in repelling Moscow’s advance on the capital. In Sept 2022, he was credited with orchestrating the counteroffensive in the Kharkiv region, which has been one of the most significant victories in the war. He also led the Bakhmut operation which has been the war’s longest and bloodiest fight and which has been criticised because of the high losses suffered by Ukrainian forces. 'He is a traitor' Reacting to Syrskyi's appointment, former Russian president Dmitry Medvedev accused Syrskyi, who did not serve in post-Soviet Russia's army, of breaking his oath as an officer. Medvedev, who is currently deputy chairman of Russia's Security Council, said on Telegram, "Looking at the biography of the new commander-in-chief of the Ukrainian armed forces Syrskyi one feels a sense of hatred, contempt and disgust." "Disgust for a man who was a Soviet Russian officer, but became a Bandera traitor, who broke his oath and serves the Nazis, destroying his loved ones. May the earth burn under his feet!" he added. Bandera here is a reference to Stepan Bandera, a World War Two-era Ukrainian nationalist who collaborated with Nazi Germany to fight against the Red Army. Bandera is regarded as a freedom fighter by some Ukrainians but as a traitor by many Russians. (With inputs from agencies)

After weeks of speculation, Ukraine’s top commander Valery Zaluzhny, who has led Kyiv’s forces nearly two years into the Russian invasion, has been removed from his post, President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed on Thursday (Feb 8) in the biggest shake-up of the Ukrainian military leadership amid the ongoing war.

Zaluzhny dismissed and replaced

“Today, a decision was made to change the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine. I am sincerely grateful to Valery Fedorovych (Zaluzhny) for all his achievements and victories,” Defence Minister Rustem Umerov said in a post on social media.

The shake-up which saw Zaluzhny’s ouster, who has led Ukraine’s forces against one of the most powerful armies in the world amid the ongoing invasion, follows months of speculation about a rift between him and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky.

“As of today, a new management team takes over the leadership of the Armed Forces of Ukraine,” said Zelensky named Colonel General Oleksandr Syrsky who was the head of Ukraine’s ground forces, as the new army chief.

The Ukrainian president also said that he met with Zaluzhny on Thursday and told him that the time had come for changes in the military leadership, but that Kyiv’s top general should remain “on his team”.

“I have offered General Zaluzhny to continue to be part of the team of the Ukrainian state. I would be grateful for his consent,” said Zelensky.

Meanwhile, Zaluzhny, in his statement said that he had an “important and serious conversation” with Zelensky and that a decision had been made to change battlefield tactics and strategy.

“The tasks of 2022 are different from the tasks of 2024. Therefore, everyone must change and adapt to new realities as well. To win together too,” it added.

‘Iron General’

Zelensky’s dismissal of Ukraine’s top general is a big gamble as Zaluzhny’s ouster, known by some as the “Iron General,” could affect the morale of the troops fighting on the country’s 1,000-kilometre frontline.

Zaluzhny also remains popular in Ukraine as under him Ukrainian forces retook almost half of Russia-occupied regions in Ukraine in 2022. Additionally, polling surveys, as per Reuters, put the public’s trust in the top general at over 90 per cent.

Syrsky, who commanded Ukraine’s lightning Autumn 2022 counter-offensive in the Kharkiv region, will take Zaluzhny’s place, said the Ukrainian president.

It also seems like Syrsky has his work cut out for him, as he is taking over the leadership of the Ukrainian forces amid uncertainty over more aid from the United States and a perceived deadlock in the war.

The Kremlin, on Tuesday (Feb 6) confirmed that Tucker Carlson has been granted permission to interview Russian President Vladimir Putin. However, Moscow rejected the former Fox News anchor’s claims that he was the only one among Western media figures trying to interview the Russian president amid the ongoing war.

‘One-sided’

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Putin had agreed to the Carlson interview because the former Fox News host’s approach differs from the “one-sided” reporting of the Ukraine war by many Western news outlets.

‘Carlson is wrong’: Kremlin denies Tucker’s claim that only he sought Putin interview amid Ukraine war

United States President Joe Biden, on Tuesday (Feb 6) called out Republicans in Congress and warned that if it fails to renew funding for Ukraine it will play into the Kremlin’s hands and accused his predecessor Donald Trump of playing politics with US security.

‘Clock is ticking’

The “clock is ticking” for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, Biden warned while calling out Trump for pressuring Republican lawmakers not to pass a $118 billion bill, which includes aid for both Israel and Ukraine but is tied to strict US immigration curbs demanded by the Republicans.

“We can’t walk away now. That’s what (Russian President Vladimir) Putin’s betting on,” Biden said at the White House. “Supporting this bill is standing up to Putin. Opposing this bill is playing into his hands.”

‘Show some spine’

“All indications are this bill won’t even move forward to the Senate floor. Why? The simple reason: Donald Trump,” said the US president. He added, “Because Donald Trump thinks it’s bad for him politically.”

Concerns over the handling of immigration have become a top issue ahead of the presidential election this year. The Biden administration has witnessed a record number of migrants trying to illegally cross the US-Mexico border, with a reported more than 9,500 per day, in December.

Meanwhile, Trump has reportedly told Republicans to reject the bipartisan border security deal unveiled on Sunday (Feb 4).

The $118 billion bill is losing support on Capitol Hill with more than 20 Republican senators saying that the immigration-related measures are not strict enough. On the other hand, some Democrats have also opposed the bill because they say some of its measures treat migrants too harshly.

The immigration portion of the bill includes the “toughest set of reforms to secure the border ever,” said Biden.

The US president also went on to blame Republicans for buckling under pressure from Trump who has been reaching out to lawmakers to “intimidate them to vote against this proposal.” He added, “And it looks like they’re caving.”

At least three civilians were killed and over 10 others were injured as Russia launched cruise and ballistic missiles as well as Shahed-type drones at targets throughout Ukraine, according to Ukrainian authorities.

The Ukrainian military claimed to have intercepted 44 of the 64 launched missiles and drones, indicating that Russia was aiming its missiles at at least three major cities.

"We are grateful to our brave defenders and our international partners who help us strengthening air defence capabilities," the ministry said.

The air raid alert began at about 6 am local time and lasted for about three hours.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky took to X to confirm the deaths of two civilians. He said two people were killed in the capital, Kyiv and one person in Mykolaiv in the south of the country.

“Another massive attack against our state. Six regions were under the enemy’s strike. All our services are now working to cope with the consequences of this terror,” he posted on X.

"My condolences to all who have lost loved ones," he said. "We will definitely retaliate against Russia; terrorists will always face the consequences of their actions. I am grateful to all of our medics, rescuers, and utility workers. I thank everyone who cares about our country and saves and assists people."

Parts of Kiev lost power, high-voltage wires were broken, and individuals were buried beneath debris, said Zelensky.

Zelensky says two killed in Kyiv after massive missiles, drone attacks by Russia

Amid limited gains made in the two-year war against Russia, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is mulling a "reset" to replace several top officials including the commander-in-chief of the country's armed forces.

For weeks, the speculations have been rife that Zelensky will fire the highly popular Valerii Zaluzhnyi. The two have been at odds over the current strategy to make headways in the war.

“It is a question of the people who are to lead Ukraine. A reset is necessary, I am talking about a replacement of a number of state leaders, not only in the army sector,” Zelensky said in an interview on Sunday (Feb 4)

“When I speak of turnover, I have in mind something serious that does not concern a single person, but the direction of the country’s leadership,” he added when asked about Zaluzhnyi.

The Ukrainian prez said to win the war, "We must all push in the same direction, we cannot be discouraged, we must have the right and positive energy, negativity must be left at home. We can't take on giving-up attitudes."

A reset is necessary, I am talking about a replacement of a number of state leaders, not only in the army sector,” Zelensky said in an interview on Sunday (Feb 4) “When I speak of turnover, I have in mind something serious that does not concern a single person, but the direction of the country’s leadership,” he added when asked about Zaluzhnyi. The Ukrainian prez said to win the war, "We must all push in the same direction, we cannot be discouraged, we must have the right and positive energy, negativity must be left at home. We can't take on giving-up attitudes." According to a report by the news agency AFP, Senate Appropriations Committee chair Patty Murray said the so-called national security supplemental legislation provided for $118.3 billion in total funding, including $60 billion to support Ukraine and $14.1 billion in security assistance to Israel. Ukraine has been fighting a war against Russia since late Feb 2022 and Israel has been at war with Hamas since early Oct last year. The deal also included $20.2 billion for US border security and a myriad of immigration policy changes agreed to by both Democrats and Republicans. According to AFP, the bill's prospects of becoming a law are unclear. Ukraine war: Bakery blast toll rises to 28 in Russia-held city; Zelensky visits frontline

The Ukrainian government has informed the White House that it plans to fire the country's top military commander overseeing the war against Russian occupation forces, two knowledgeable sources said on Friday.

The move to oust General Valeriy Zaluzhnyi, who has clashed with President Volodymyr Zelensky over a range of issues, follows a Ukrainian counteroffensive last year that failed to recover significant amounts of Russian-held territory.

A source close to Zelensky's office said the pair are locked in a dispute over a new military mobilization drive, with the president opposing Zaluzhnyi's proposal to call up 500,000 fresh troops.

The source, however, added that the process for relieving Zaluzhnyi of his post as the commander in chief of Ukraine's armed forces was on hold for the time being as the sides work out their next steps.

It was unclear how long that process would take, added the source, who spoke on condition of anonymity.

A second knowledgeable source said that the White House did not express a position on the plan to replace Zaluzhnyi.

"I would emphasize that the White House response was that we did not support or object to their sovereign decision," said the source, who requested anonymity in order to discuss the issue.

"The White House expressed that it is up to Ukraine to make its own sovereign decisions about its personnel," the source continued.

The Washington Post was first to report that Ukraine had informed the White House of the plan to fire Zaluzhnyi.

US officials told Ukraine that they were not opposed to the firing of Zaluzhnyi, said the source close to the Ukrainian president's office.

"The US is okay with Ukraine firing him," said the source.

"Right now, both sides (the president and the general) have taken a pause in determining what the future will look like, and for now the status quo will remain until further notice," the source said.

The source said the frictions between Zelensky and Zaluzhnyi over mobilization involved the president's view that the military has enough personnel that could be used more efficiently.

"Zaluzhnyi insists on mobilising half a million men. Zelensky thinks that’s not necessary now," the source said.

Zaluzhnyi on Thursday published a column on the CNN website in which he wrote that the government had failed to mobilize enough troops.

Known as "the Iron General," Zaluzhnyi is extremely popular. His removal could hurt morale among Ukrainian troops battling to hold positions along more than 620 miles (1,000 km) of frontlines against a vast Russian force armed with large munitions stockpiles.

Ukrainian forces are experiencing shortages of critical ammunition. Supplies from the United States, the country's largest arms provider, have run down, and a dispute between the White House and some Republican lawmakers has stalled approval of a new aid package.

A flurry of Western and Ukrainian media reports said that Zaluzhnyi rejected Zelenskiy's request that he step aside this week.

The plan to replace Zaluzhnyi despite his popularity and ability as an inspiring commander may signal Kyiv's desire for a fresh approach to the conflict.

At least 7 killed in attacks across Ukraine; Blinken, NATO chief warn about dwindling US aid to Kyiv

What about the candidates?

Two politicians are currently leading the race, former conservative Prime Minister Alexander Stubb, 55, and ex-Foreign Minister Pekka Haavisto, 65, of the Green Party, who is running as an independent.

However, since both candidates are not expected to garner more than 50 per cent of the votes, the chances of Sunday’s vote being pushed into a run-off in February are said to be high.

According to recent polls, Right-wing National Coalition’s Stubb is expected to get 22 per cent to 27 per cent support in the first round, followed by Haavisto polling strongly on 20 per cent-23 per cent support, and Jussi Halla-aho from the far-right Finns Party at 18 per cent.

Gladkov earlier said on Telegram that the crash occurred in the Korochansky district, northeast of the region's capital.

"Now an investigation team and emergency services are working on the site. I have changed my working schedule and travelled to the district," Gladkov added.

Russia blames Ukraine after military plane carrying POWs crashes, killing all 74 on board - Video

What does 'normal' mean during the war? It has been more than 670 days since the Russia-Ukraine war started. On a wintry day, Russia invaded its neighbour on February 24, 2022. Since then, what transpired has been covered by media across the globe. It is not a new story anymore. A powerful country tries to correct the course of a smaller nation. The banality of evil is not lost on me when I write this. As a journalist, I report almost daily on the developments happening on the battlefield or the war of words between the respective leaders. It makes one wonder about the thousands of lives that have changed due to the ongoing war, which is now proving to be the bloodiest since the Vietnam War. Nataly says it has become a matter of choice. Nataly, a 29-year-old living in the capital city of Ukraine says it has become a matter of choice. She recalls that it was after a few days of uncertainty that one day, she woke up to a call from a friend saying the worst has finally happened. Russia had invaded Ukraine. She says, that although there were talks of invasion happening around, she always thought of it as a far-fetched idea, never really believing that it would happen. Life after the war started Nataly says, that in the first few weeks after the invasion, her life along with many others came to a standstill. Nobody worked, nobody knew what to do. For days, she couldn't sleep. The future seemed so clouded that she says planning life for even more than two hours did not seem feasible. Some of her friends immediately shifted to the western parts of Ukraine. According to the United Nations, over 5.1 million have been displaced internally in Ukraine while more than 6.2 million have been forced to seek refuge outside. But Nataly made a choice to not run away from the place she calls home. In the initial days of the war, she shared a flat with two of her friends. A month after the war, normalcy started setting in her life or rather she tried to bring some into her life. What's normal now? Her normal routine includes doing daily chores against the backdrop of war raid sirens and continuous shelling. Sometimes to avoid the nightly ordeal that Russian shelling brings along, some people choose to sleep at underground shelters instead of their homes, she says. It's dangerous living in the city, she says, adding that there is a price to pay to stay in her own home now. Other changes that have creeped up in her life include taking up medical courses to learn how to give first aid because you never know when you would need to save someone else or yourself. A lot of her friends have become volunteers who collect money and provide equipment to the frontier soldiers. She along with her family raised money to provide drones to the army as well. Living in the city or even travelling around is not safe. For people in other parts of the world, while a vacation might bring some respite, for Nataly, it wasn't the same. She went to Lviv for a few days where she was welcomed by drone strikes. Now as a part of their pre-departure ritual, people in Ukraine just don't check for cash or keys, but also look if the place they are travelling to has a bomb shelter or not. Crowd funding campaigns and making donations to army and charity foundations have become an integral part of people's lives in the war-torn country. Nataly says, if you're travelling to a village where shelters are not available, you just accept your fate and make a choice. Humans are adaptive, she says. It makes one think but where do we draw the line. Here is a person talking about getting used to paraphernalia that a war in her country has brought along with itself. Overwhelming is how she describes her days since the war clouds engulfed her skies, while mentioning in the same breath that she has been among the lucky ones. War has brought people closer home Nataly further says as days pass, life is becoming more uncertain, but she is glad to be around those she loves. She says, among the people she knows, most have shifted to speaking Ukrainian only. People even avoid using Russian casually like they used to, in the pre-war period. War has brought people closer home. It is being reflected in the art they create. Nataly says a lot of them are turning towards Ukrainian culture and their roots. Message for the world. Nataly says she is grateful to the world for the support Ukraine has received so far. She hopes it does not end as the country continues to remain at war. She would also want people to know more about the Ukrainian culture.

The atomic scientists on Tuesday (Jan 22) kept their "Doomsday Clock" set as close to midnight as ever before. The clock has stayed at 90 seconds to midnight, which is the closest it had been since it was established in 1947.

The Doomsday Clock is a symbolic countdown to human extinction. It is a sheer representation of the likelihood of a human-made global catastrophe.

‘Doomsday Clock’ remains at 90 seconds to midnight amid fears of ‘global catastrophe’

At least 18 people have been killed and more than 130 others were injured after Russia launched a wave of attacks on Ukrainian cities, on Tuesday (Jan 23), said President Volodymyr Zelensky. The Ukrainian president also vowed a strong response to these attacks as the war approaches its third year.

Deadly Russian attacks across Ukraine

During his nightly address, Zelensky said more than 200 sites were struck, including 139 residential buildings. The early morning strikes had targeted the Ukrainian capital city of Kyiv and Kharkiv, with air raid sirens going off at 5:43 am (local time).

The eastern border city of Kharkiv suffered three waves of attacks, while Kyiv and the southern region of Kherson were subjected to constant shelling. According to Zelensky, Russia launched nearly 40 missiles of different types in “another combined strike to try to circumvent our air defence system.”

Rescue workers in Ukraine’s second-largest city, Kharkiv, were seen hauling survivors from smouldering piles of rubble as apartment blocks were set ablaze and toppled by the strikes, according to AFP journalists.

Interior Minister Igor Klymenko praised rescuers who he said pulled some 27 survivors out of the rubble. Kharkiv’s mayor, Ihor Terekhov, said rescuers discovered the body of a nine-year-old girl under rubble; her mother had also been killed.

Meanwhile, in Kyiv, emergency services said 22 people, including four children, had been wounded across at least three districts in the attacks which set buildings and cars ablaze in central districts.

“There was a very loud bang, and my mother was already running outside, shouting that we need to leave. We all went to the corridor,” said Daniel Boliukh, 21, as quoted by Reuters. “Then, we went on the balcony to have a look, and saw all these buildings were on fire.”

Residential buildings and medical and educational institutions were damaged in Kyiv, according to emergency services.

Ukraine’s commander-in-chief claimed that the country’s armed forces destroyed 22 of 44 missiles of various types. At least 20 were shot down over the Ukrainian capital, said Kyiv’s military administration.

“Ordinary life is what Russia sees as a threat to itself. The state is a typical terrorist,” said a sombre Ukrainian president. He added, “Let them know in Russia that the Ukrainian character knows how to be far-reaching enough in response.”

Defence Minister Rustem Umerov told a recent international ministerial meeting on Kyiv’s defence needs that Russia was stepping up missile attacks. Moscow's forces had used more than 600 missiles and over 1,000 drones over the past two months, he said.

Meanwhile, the Kremlin, responding to questions from reporters about the attacks, denied that Russian forces had targeted civilian infrastructure in Ukraine.

“Our military does not hit civilian facilities or residential neighbourhoods, and does not hit civilians – unlike the Kyiv regime,” said spokesperson Dmitry Peskov.

At least 20 were shot down over the Ukrainian capital, said Kyiv’s military administration. In Kherson, Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said Russian aircraft pounded the region throughout the day. He added, “Let them know in Russia that the Ukrainian character knows how to be far-reaching enough in response.” Defence Minister Rustem Umerov told a recent international ministerial meeting on Kyiv’s defence needs that Russia was stepping up missile attacks. Ukraine officials blame Russian missile strike for damage to gas pipeline in Kharkiv

At least 27 people have been killed and 25 others were injured after Ukrainian forces shelled the Moscow-controlled city of Donetsk in eastern Ukraine, on Sunday (Jan 21) said the city’s Russia-installed mayor.

Meanwhile, Russian forces took control of the village of Krokhmalne in Ukraine’s Kharkiv region, said the Russian Defence Ministry, on Sunday (Jan 21). A Ukrainian military spokesman confirmed that Kyiv’s forces had withdrawn from the village.

The death toll marks one of the deadliest reported in Donetsk in recent months. Meanwhile, Moscow-installed head of the Donetsk region, Denis Pushilin had earlier said that 13 people had died in a “terrible bombing on a market”. He added, “The market was attacked on Sunday, when it is busiest.”

Pushilin announced a day of mourning on Monday in the Donetsk People's Republic, referring to the name given to the part of the region Russia says it has annexed.

Moscow on Sunday called the strike on the market a "barbaric terrorist act" that showed what Russia calls its "special military operation" in Ukraine.

"The neo-Nazi Kyiv regime, with the support of the United States and its satellites, once again committed a barbaric terrorist act against the civilian population of Russia," said the Russian foreign ministry.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Monday (Jan 15) that there had been times when he felt the urge to punch his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the face in talks during the early stages of Russia's invasion in Feb 2022.

Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba said on Monday (Jan 15) that there had been times when he felt the urge to punch his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in the face in talks during the early stages of Russia's invasion in Feb 2022. In an interview with a Ukrainian blogger, Foreign Minister Kuleba was asked about his most difficult set of negotiations (in the war). Kuleba said the most difficult talks were those "in which you feel simply that you want to go and punch your opposite number in the nose, but you really can't do that." Also read: Ukraine claims to have destroyed Russian spy plane and command aircraft "And I can say that this occurred two or three times. One occasion was with Lavrov in (the Turkish resort of) Antalya in the spring of 2022," he added. Several rounds of negotiations have been held between Russian and Ukrainian officials since the conflict started - first near Ukraine's border with Belarus and then in Turkey. Kuleba told the blogger on Monday that talks in Turkey had been difficult and dealt with a ceasefire and arranging humanitarian corridors. No agreement was reached in these talks and there have been no negotiations since. 'An incompetence of Ukrainian leadership' Reacting to the Ukrainian foreign minister's latest remarks, the Russian foreign ministry said that Kuleba's remarks on Lavrov underscored the incompetence of Kyiv's leadership. Speaking to the Izvestia newspaper, Russian foreign ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said, "And that is the problem: uneducated, aggressive people were recruited under the guise of serving as ministers to ruin Ukraine for American money." "Perhaps he belongs in a no-holds-barred bout rather than the foreign ministry?" Zakharova added. "I must note an absence of any will for peace on the part of the regime of (Ukrainian President) Zelensky," Lavrov told Tass. The Russian foreign minister said that Zelensky's representatives think only in categories of war and resort to totally aggressive rhetoric. "There is no consideration of holding peace talks ... Draw your own conclusions," he said. Volodymyr Zelensky has ruled out talks with Russia until it withdraws from territories it has occupied since its invasion. (With inputs from agencies)

Ukraine on Monday (Jan 15) claimed that it had downed one Russian military jet over the Azov Sea and seriously damaged a bomber - an incident that may cause serious escalation in the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war.

A report by the news agency AFP mentioned that earlier, Kyiv said it had downed both an A-50 Russian reconnaissance plane and an Il-22 bomber, but later said the latter made it back to base seriously damaged.

Valery Zaluzhny, who is Ukraine's commander-in-chief, said both planes were "destroyed", adding: "I am grateful to the air force for the excellently planned and conducted operation in Azov region!"

Ukraine claims to have destroyed Russian spy plane and command aircraft

Russia on Monday (Jan 15) said that it has convicted over 200 Ukrainian prisoners of war to severe prison terms, some of which were life sentences.

The development comes when the Kremlin is about to complete nearly two years of its offensive against Ukraine.

Russia is believed to have held thousands of Ukrainian troops captive during the siege of the port city of Mariupol in 2022.

International rights organisations and Kiev have criticised Moscow's POW trials calling the move illegal.

"More than 200 Ukrainian military personnel have been sentenced to long prison sentences for committing murder of civilians and mistreating prisoners (of war)," Alexander Bastrykin, the head of Russia's Investigative Committee, said in an interview to state news outlet RIA Novosti.

He further claimed that Moscow would continue its efforts to prosecute Ukrainian military personnel, including "high-level officials."

While some Ukrainian prisoners of war were transferred to Russia, many of them were detained in Russian-occupied eastern Ukraine.

Last year witnessed the highest number of civilian casualties, killed or injured, by airstrikes, bombs or artillery than any other year for more than a decade, according to an annual study.

The report by the United Kingdom-based monitoring group said that the ongoing war between Israel and the Palestinian militant group Hamas in Gaza significantly contributed to this record-high number.

122% rise in civilian fatalities

Action on Armed Violence (AOAV), a London-based charity in its annual report recorded a 122 per cent rise in civilian fatalities caused by explosives last year.

In 2023, according to the report, 33,846 non-combatants had been killed or wounded, the largest number it had counted since it began conducting its annual survey in 2010.

Notably, the total casualty levels recorded last year exceeded the number witnessed at the height of the Syrian civil war and early stages of the Western campaign against the Islamic State, between 2013 and 2017. During this time, the number of total killed and injured was regularly over 30,000.

“Last year proved to be the most harmful to civilians from explosive violence since our monitor began in 2010,” Iain Overton, the group’s executive director.

Last year, the AOAV also identified at least 7,307 explosive incidents across the world, which is up from 4,322 recorded in 2022.

There was a 226 per cent rise in the use of air-launched weapons across the world in 2023, according to the London-based charity.

The report, according to the AOAV, is based on data collected from reputable media organisations.

Israel-Hamas war a ‘major cause’

AOAV describes the Israel-Hamas war in Gaza as a “major cause for such a dramatic increase” in civilian casualties accounting for around one-third of the global total.

The UK-based organisation recorded 920 incidents of explosive weapons use in Gaza, resulting in the death of 9,334 people.

While the staggering rise has mainly been attributed to the Israel-Hamas war, ongoing conflicts in Ukraine and Sudan also contributed significantly to the total number of civilian casualties.

Speaking about the ongoing war in Gaza, Overton noted that since Hamas launched its surprise attack against Israel, on October 7 there had been “a massive spike” in incidents during Israel’s retaliatory attacks.

He added, “Gaza almost overwhelmed our capacity to record each individual and injurious reported strike.”

The AOAV director also said that the data should be a stark warning to states that using explosive weapons in urban areas disproportionately impacts civilians.

The report also dubbed Israel as the “most injurious state actor in 2023” with more than 1,000 attacks leading to 12,950 civilian casualties, both killed and injured. Israel’s Swords of Iron operation reportedly accounted for 37 per cent of all civilian casualties last year.

During an address on the eve of Orthodox Christmas, on Saturday (Jan 6) Russian President Vladimir Putin vowed to support soldiers "fighting to defend Moscow’s interests". Meanwhile, wives of Russians mobilised to fight in Ukraine symbolically laid flowers at the flame of an unknown soldier near the Kremlin and demanded the return of their husbands from the front.

Putin’s change in tone

“Many of our men, our courageous, heroic guys, Russian warriors, even now, on this holiday, defend the interests of our country with arms in hand,” said the Russian president at a late Saturday meeting with families of Russian soldiers who have died in Ukraine.

He also said that he has ordered his government to ramp up support for those who fight and call on his people to be merciful and just.

Putin’s change in tone “Many of our men, our courageous, heroic guys, Russian warriors, even now, on this holiday, defend the interests of our country with arms in hand,” said the Russian president at a late Saturday meeting with families of Russian soldiers who have died in Ukraine. He also said that he has ordered his government to ramp up support for those who fight and call on his people to be merciful and just. It has also been reported that Putin, who is facing elections in March, has been softening his speeches to focus on traditional Russian values and unity. “I would like our meeting to be a clear, understandable signal to all my colleagues throughout the Russian Federation, and at all levels – a clear signal to ensure that my colleagues are always and everywhere with you, I repeat, any level of power,” he told the families gathered at a chapel at his residence in Novo-Ogaryovo outside Moscow. Putin vows to support soldiers fighting in Ukraine while wives mobilise protest near Kremlin

United States Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin, on Saturday (Jan 7) released a statement taking “full responsibility” for failing to disclose a recent and ongoing week-long hospitalisation following reports that the White House was not informed about it until at least Thursday morning.

At least one official has told US media that the Biden administration was not informed for days that US Defence Secretary had been hospitalised. Austin, 70, was admitted to the Walter Reed Medical Center on Monday due to complications following surgery, the reason for which remains shrouded in secrecy.

The statement comes amid reports that President Joe Biden was in the dark that Austin was ill and unable to carry out his duties during this time.

Week-long hospitalisation hidden

The 70-year-old was admitted on Monday (Jan 1) to Walter Reed National Military Medical Center for what the Pentagon has said were “complications following a recent elective medical procedure.”

The Department of Defense waited until Friday (Dec 5) evening to make the announcement, a breach of standard protocol at a time when Washington is embroiled in two wars – the Israel-Hamas war and the Russia-Ukraine war.

Pentagon spokesperson said that its chief resumed “full duties” Friday evening, but remained in the hospital.

Several American media reports citing sources have also claimed that not only was the hospitalisation hidden from the public but also the US president for days.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, an American official told Reuters that Biden was only informed on Thursday evening, a day before the Pentagon released the statement.

However, according to a second US official as per Reuters, Biden maintained confidence in Austin and the two spoke on Saturday evening.

“I recognize I could have done a better job ensuring the public was appropriately informed. I commit to doing better,” said Austin, in a statement.

He added, “But this is important to say: this was my medical procedure, and I take full responsibility for my decisions about disclosure.” Austin said he will be “returning to the Pentagon soon.”

Deputy Secretary of Defense Kathleen Hicks was prepared to step in during Austin’s illness, and made some routine decisions on his behalf during the time, a Defense Department spokesperson told AFP.

Notably, Austin sits below Biden at the top of the chain of command of the US military and his duties often require him to be available at a moment’s notice to respond to any national security-related crisis.

Secrecy garners backlash

Politico was among the first of many media outlets to report that Austin had been in the hospital for three days before Pentagon officials told National Security Adviser Jake Sullivan and other top White House officials.

According to Politico, Sullivan then informed Biden. It also said that Congress found out about Austin’s hospitalisation 15 minutes before Friday evening’s public statement.

The apparent cover-up of Austin’s hospitalisation has led Republican lawmakers to criticise Democrat Biden’s administration and have since demanded an explanation.

Top Republican on the Senate Armed Services Committee, Senator Roger Wicker, accused the Pentagon of failing to inform Congress immediately about such matters and said that the incident further eroded the public’s trust in the Biden administration.

He also cited past failures of the current administration to quickly disclose information about national security incidents, including the appearance of a Chinese spy balloon over the US last year.

“When one of the country's two National Command Authorities is unable to perform their duties, military families, Members of Congress, and the American public deserve to know the full extent of the circumstances,” said Wicker in a statement.

The Pentagon Press Association which comprises of journalists who cover the Defense Department, in a statement expressed “significant concerns” over the apparent cover-up, saying that Austin was a public figure who had no claim to medical privacy in such a situation.

It added, “At a time when there are growing threats to U.S. military service members in the Middle East and the U.S. is playing key national security roles in the wars in Israel and Ukraine, it is particularly critical for the American public to be informed about the health status and decision-making ability of its top defense leader.”

Ukraine's cyber spy chief told the news agency Reuters that Russian hackers entered and were inside Ukrainian telecoms giant Kyivstar's system from at least May last year in a cyberattack.

Illia Vitiuk, who is head of the Security Service of Ukraine's (SBU) cybersecurity department, said that the incident should serve as a "big warning" to the West.

In an interview, which was published on Thursday (Jan 4), Vitiuk disclosed exclusive details about the hack, which he said caused "disastrous" destruction and aimed to land a psychological blow and gather intelligence.

"This attack is a big message, a big warning, not only to Ukraine but for the whole Western world to understand that no one is actually untouchable," he said.

Vitiuk highlighted that Kyivstar was a wealthy and private company that invested a lot in cybersecurity.

The spy chief said that more than 24.3 million Kyivstar subscribers lost phone reception as a result of the attack, with banks reporting service outages and Ukrainians in the country's eastern combat zone left without a connection.

Sandworm, a Russian military intelligence cyberwarfare unit linked to cyberattacks in Ukraine and elsewhere, was behind the attack, according to Vitiuk.

"For now, we can say securely, that they were in the system at least since May 2023. I cannot say right now, since what time they had ... full access: probably at least since November," Vitiuk said.

Meanwhile, in the recent development in the ongoing war against Ukraine, the Russian region of Belgorod bordering Ukraine said Thursday (Jan 4) it would keep some schools closed until January 19, following unprecedented Ukrainian shelling over the weekend.

Twenty-five people were killed in a Ukrainian strike on the regional capital Belgorod Saturday, Moscow said. The attack was the deadliest in Russia since the conflict began in February 2022.

"I report the decisions that have been made: to extend the school holidays from January 9 to 19" in several districts including Belgorod city, governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said.

"In technical colleges and universities located in these municipalities, it is recommended to hold class remotely," he said, adding that the holidays may be extended further.
