White House claimed on Thursday (Jan 4) that North Korea has provided Russia with ballistic missiles and missile launchers that were used in recent attacks on Ukraine. In a briefing, National Security Council spokesman John Kirby said: "This is a significant and concerning escalation."&nbsp;

"Our information indicates that the Democratic People's Republic of Korea recently provided Russia with ballistic missile launchers and several ballistic missiles," said Kirby.&nbsp;

Kirby said that Russian forces launched at least one of the North Korean-supplied missiles on December 30, which landed in an open field in the Zaporizhzhia region.&nbsp;

He added that Moscow's forces then fired "multiple" ballistic missiles into Ukraine as part of a mass aerial attack on January 2.&nbsp;

Kirby said that the United States and its allies will now take the matter to the UN Security Council, citing a violation of UN sanctions against North Korea. He told reporters that the United States will raise these arms deals at the UNSC alongside our allies and partners, and "we will demand that Russia be held accountable for yet again violating its international obligations".&nbsp;

Putin says 'we will never back down' in New Year's Eve address

Russian-installed authorities on Monday (Jan 1) claimed that Ukrainian shelling of the Moscow-held city of Donetsk on New Year's Eve killed four people and wounded 13.&nbsp;

In a video on Telegram, the Russian-installed head of Donetsk Denis Pushilin said: "As a result of Ukrainian shelling of central Donetsk on New Year's Eve we can say that there are four dead and 13 wounded."&nbsp;

The attack hit the Voroshilov district in central Donetsk, Pushilin said further accusing Ukraine of "having an aim to cause as much harm as possible to the civilian population because it used cluster munitions".&nbsp;

He added that Ukraine used cluster munitions. The US has supplied Kyiv with cluster munitions, in a move that was criticised even by its own allies. Russia on Sunday (Dec 31) claimed that it attacked military facilities in the Ukrainian city of Kharkiv overnight, including a hotel housing military commanders and "foreign mercenaries", calling it retaliation for Ukraine's strikes on Belgorod the previous day.&nbsp;

Regional governor Oleh Syniehubov said on Sunday that at least six missiles hit Kharkiv in the first wave of Russia's attacks. It injured at least 28 people and hit residential buildings, hotels and medical facilities.&nbsp;

According to Russia's statement, the attack targeted the former Kharkiv Palace hotel as well as the Kharkiv region offices of the Ukrainian Security Service.&nbsp;

It further added that military and intelligence professionals participating in Ukraine's offensive on Belgorod, as well as "foreign mercenaries and militants" planning cross-border incursions, were among those killed.&nbsp;

However, Ukraine denied Russian claims that Ukrainian intelligence officers were killed in the strike. Russia launches missiles and drone strikes on Kharkiv after Belgorod 'terrorist attack'

The United States President Joe Biden’s administration, on Wednesday (Dec 27) announced another tranche of military aid for Ukraine worth around $250 million, amid its ongoing war with Russia. The latest package marked the last funding available for the war-torn country without fresh approval from Congress where the talks on a new agreement have stalled.&nbsp;

<h2>About the latest military aid package</h2>

The latest package included air defence munitions, anti-tank weapons, artillery ammunition, anti-armour munitions and over 15 million rounds of ammunition, said Secretary of State Antony Blinken on Wednesday.&nbsp;

Washington’s top diplomat, in a statement, said Congress, where Republicans are split on supporting Ukraine, should “act swiftly” to renew the flow.&nbsp;

He added, “Our assistance has been critical to supporting our Ukrainian partners as they defend their country and their freedom against Russia’s aggression.”

The weapons, worth up to $250 million are provided through the Presidential Drawdown Authority and will be pulled from Pentagon stockpiles. The drawdown is a US foreign policy tool, which allows speedy delivery of Department of Defense stocks to foreign countries in crisis and does not need Congressional approval.&nbsp;

In a statement, Marine Lieutenant Colonel Garron Garn, a Pentagon spokesperson said there is no more funding to replace the weapons taken from department stocks. Therefore, Garn added, “Without the supplemental funding, there will be a shortfall in replenishing U.S. military stocks, affecting American military readiness.”

Earlier this month, Biden signed a $200 million emergency aid drawdown for Kyiv amid Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky’s visit to Washington. This is after Zelensky failed to sway US lawmakers as criticism of continued financial support for Ukraine has grown louder on Capitol Hill in recent months, particularly from the Republicans.

However, the US president has made backing Ukraine a priority as Western aid has been crucial in helping the war-torn country against a far larger attacking Russian army.

<h2>Biden’s $106 billion aid package proposal</h2>

Biden has sought Congress’ approval of a broader $106 billion emergency spending package which would include funding for US border security and military and humanitarian aid for Israel, Taiwan and Ukraine.&nbsp;

Out of the $106 billion spending package, proposed by the White House, more than $61 billion would be allocated to Ukraine.&nbsp;

While there is broad bipartisan backing for Ukraine amid its ongoing war with Russia, support from Kyiv’s Western allies has dwindled in recent months amid a stalled counter-offensive in the east of the country and little progress along the line of control.

Meanwhile, on Capitol Hill, any agreement on further military aid to Ukraine has been stopped by Republicans who insist that tougher security measures on the US-Mexico border as a condition for a deal.

Congress has approved more than $110 billion in aid for Ukraine since the beginning of Russia’s invasion.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia fires another barrage of drones</h2>

White House to release final package of authorised military aid for Ukraine amid deadlock in Congress

Two Russians have been handed hefty jail terms for reading poetry against Russia's invasion of Ukraine. A court in Moscow on Thursday (Dec 28) handed seven-year jail sentence to Artyom Kamardin (33) and a five-and-a-half-year sentence to Yegor Shtovba (23). According to news agency AFP, supporters of the two men, who were present inside the courtroom, shouted "Shame!" as the jail-terms were announced.

After Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Moscow has dealt with&nbsp;any perceived protest harshly. The criticism of what Russia calls the 'special military operation' has effectively been outlawed.

Artyom Kamardin (33) has reportedly said that he was violently beaten and raped when he was in detention. He said that the officers threatened his girlfriend and made him shoot an apology video.

On the eve of his arrest, Kamardin had recited his poem "Kill me, militia man!". The recitation took place on a square in Moscow where dissidents have held demonstrations since the times of Soviet Russia. He also raised slogans that protested Russian attempts to annex regions in southern Ukraine.

Both Kamardin and Shtovba were found guilty of 'inciting hatred' and "calling for activities threatening state security".

Two Russians sent to jail for reciting poetry against Ukraine invasion

A Russian soldier, heavily wounded in the war against Ukraine, received two buckets of carrots and a bag of onions from the government as compensation, a report carried by independent investigative outlet Mozhem Obyasnit (We Can Explain) has claimed.

A Russian soldier, heavily wounded in the war against Ukraine, received two buckets of carrots and a bag of onions from the government as compensation, a report carried by independent investigative outlet Mozhem Obyasnit (We Can Explain) has claimed. The publication reportedly interviewed the soldier's wife for the story who said the family thought they would receive money for the trauma his husband had gone through but instead all they got was vegetables. The soldier identified as Oleg Rybkin, 45, was mobilised from Russia's Volgograd region to fight in Ukraine in September 2022. In June 2023, Rybkin found himself in combat near the village of Robotyne in Zaporizhzhia Oblast - the epicentre of the counteroffensive operation launched by Ukrainian troops. During one of the operations, Rybkin was wounded in the abdomen, liver and kidneys while his right knee joint was destroyed. A heavily injured Rybkin was then taken to a local hospital in Ukraine where he underwent abdominal surgery with the military medical commission deeming him "temporarily unfit" to fight. Later, he was sent to Saint Petersburg for rehabilitation. According to Irina Rybakina, her husband remains in extreme pain and needs knee surgery for which no compensation has been provided up until now. She said the military command doesn't want to be forced to pay the 3 million rubles ($32,730) in compensation and a lifelong pension. "He has severe pain, his knee cannot straighten, and he cannot walk without crutches. He's on painkillers and sleeping pills," Irina Rybkina told the outlet. "What vegetables, what gifts, do I need to replace my husband's joint and get him discharged!" she added. Ukrainian officials said on Wednesday (Dec 27) that Russia fired almost 50 Shahed drones at targets in Ukraine, the news agency Associated Press reported. They also claimed that Moscow shelled a train station where more than 100 civilians were gathered to catch a train to Kyiv. As per the officials, the barrages killed at least five people and knocked out power in most of the southern city of Kherson. The alleged attack came a day after Ukrainian warplanes damaged a Russian ship moored in the Black Sea off Crimea. Ukrainian Interior Minister Ihor Klymenko claimed that Russian forces launched an artillery and drone bombardment of the Kherson region overnight. He said that the attack took place when some 140 civilians were waiting for a train at the region's capital city of the same name. The regional Governor Oleksandr Prokudin said that the attack on the Kherson region and its capital hit residential areas and a mall as well as striking the power grid. The attack left around 70 per cent of households in Kherson city without electricity during the winter cold, he said further adding that it was not immediately possible to estimate when power might be restored. Russia-Ukraine war: Drone and artillery attack kills 6 in Ukrainian city, causes power outage

Russia on Monday (Dec 25) claimed to have fully controlled the town of Marinka in eastern Ukraine. President Vladimir Putin hailed it as a "success" that would mean less shelling on the nearby Russian-held city of Donetsk.&nbsp;

In a meeting shown on state television, Russian Defence Minister Sergei Shoigu told Putin that "our [Russia's] assault units have today completely liberated the settlement of Maryinka".&nbsp;

Maryinka, which was once home to 10,000 people, is located southwest of Donetsk and most accounts have described it as a ghost town, but Moscow sees it as Russia's most significant gain since the capture of Bakhmut in May.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war: Moscow claims to have seized town in eastern Ukraine

In what is being seen as a snub to Russia, Ukraine has decided to officially celebrate Christmas on December 25 this year. Notably, Kyiv has held X-Mas celebrations on January 7 for a long time. It will be the first time in over a century that Ukrainians will observe the festival in line with the Gregorian calendar and along with most of the world’s Christians.

<h2>What prompted this change?</h2>

According to the Ukrainian media, the idea of celebrating Christmas on December 25 was discussed even before Russia launched what it calls its “special military operation” in Ukraine. Like Russia, Ukraine has also been observing the holiday on January 7, following the old Julian calendar.

However, the Russian invasion of Ukraine played a role in settling the debate, which has been going on since 2019. The Ukrainian government passed legislation in July making the date change, in what was viewed as a snub to Russia and the Russian Orthodox Church, which still has some influence on Kyiv, until recently.&nbsp;

The bill, which was later signed into law by President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that Ukrainians wanted to “live their own life with their own traditions and holidays”. It added that this change also allows them to “abandon the Russian heritage of imposing Christmas celebrations on January 7.”&nbsp;

The movement to change the date can be traced back to the creation of the Orthodox Church of Ukraine, an independent church that held its first service in 2019.&nbsp;

The Orthodox Church of Ukraine formally broke away from the Russian Orthodox Church over Moscow’s annexation of Crimea in 2014 and its support for separatists in eastern Ukraine.

<h2>At least four killed in Ukraine’s Kherson</h2>

At least four people were killed and nine others were injured over the past 24 hours after Russian bombardment in the frontline Ukrainian city of Kherson, said the region’s governor Oleksandr Prokudin, in a post on Telegram, on Sunday (Dec 24).&nbsp;

Russian forces fired 71 shells at Kherson from Saturday to Sunday morning, hitting the city centre, residential areas, medical and educational institutions and “critical infrastructure facilities,” said Prokudin.&nbsp;

Russia-Ukraine war: Six killed after attacks on Kherson, Horlivka; Moscow ‘will be defeated’, says Zelensky

Russian President Vladimir Putin has signalled for a possible armistice with Ukraine despite his bravado in public. The Kremlin has indicated its interest in Striking a deal to Halt the war but this will only happen if Russia can declare victory.

Russia-Ukraine war: Putin signals for ceasefire through intermediaries

President Vladimir Putin has been signalling through his intermediaries that Russia is willing to have a ceasefire negotiation with Ukraine, the New York Times (NYT) reported citing unnamed former Russian officials, along with American officials.

Since last September, Putin has been looking to stop “fighting along the current lines”, and that he may even be willing to accept a deal that seeks to put a stop to the two-year-long war.

“They say, ‘We are ready to have negotiations on a ceasefire’,” one&nbsp;senior international official who met with top Russians this fall, told the NYT newspaper.&nbsp;

“They want to stay where they are on the battlefield,” the official added.

<h2>Putin willing to stop</h2>

But what Putin seeks is the status quo of the current troops' position, rather than a complete cessation of territories occupied during the long-drawn war, the officials said.

“He really is willing to stop at the current positions,” one of the former senior Russian officials told The New York Times, relaying a message he said the Kremlin was quietly sending. The former official added, "He’s not willing to retreat one&nbsp;metre.”

However, it is unclear if the Ukrainian officials are willing to accept an armistice deal at this point given that they had vowed to take back the territories occupied by Russia, including Crimea.

The officials argued that Putin’s change in stance stems from a failed Ukrainian counteroffensive, a stalemate in the battleground and lack of willingness from the West to provide military aid.

<h2>Russian prez wants Russia to 'move on'</h2>

Putin wants, the officials added, Russia just declare victory and “move on”, two former senior Russian officials close to the Kremlin and US and international officials who have received the message from Putin’s envoys told the Times.

In 2022, according to US officials, Putin had suggested that he was satisfied with Russia’s performance on the battlefield when Ukraine routed Russia’s army in the country’s northeast, the NYT reported.

But few US officials opine that it could be a familiar attempt by the Kremlin to misdirect from the ground situation, and does not reflect genuine willingness by Putin to compromise.

According to senior American and European officials, the Biden administration is subtly indicating that it is now in favor of seizing over $300 billion in assets that the Russian central bank has hidden in Western countries. It has also commenced urgent talks with allies about utilizing these funds to support Ukraine's war effort during a period when financial support is diminishing.

Russia-Ukraine war: US to use nearly $5 billion Russian assests as aid to Ukraine

Former TV journalist and Russian lawmaker calling for peace in Ukraine, Yekaterina Duntsova, submitted her application on Wednesday (Dec 20) to challenge incumbent President Vladimir Putin in the country’s upcoming elections in March 2024.&nbsp;

She presented her documents to Russia’s Central Election Commission to register as a candidate days after taking her first steps toward candidate status Sunday. In line with the country’s law, her run had to be endorsed by 500 supporters.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Humane’ Russia</h2>

The 40-year-old Russian lawmaker hopes to challenge Putin by promoting her vision of a “humane” Russia “that’s peaceful, friendly and ready to cooperate with everyone on the principle of respect.”

Duntsova, in an interview with Reuters last month, called for an end to the war in Ukraine and the release of political prisoners, including opposition leader Alexei Navalny.&nbsp;

She has submitted her documents to formally enter the election which Putin is expected to win, a foregone conclusion by supporters and opponents alike.&nbsp;

“I feel a sense of accomplishment: We’ve done everything that we needed to do. We’ve made this step, and I think it should inspire people who support us,” said Duntsova, speaking to journalists in Moscow on Wednesday.

If accepted as an independent candidate, the former journalist faces the herculean task of collecting 300,000 signatures of support for her candidacy, from at least 40 Russian regions, by January 31.&nbsp;

“(I hope that) I’ll at least be registered (as a candidate). But, of course, collecting signatures is a huge job and I hope that people will be actively taking part.”

She also corrected a reporter who asked if she thought the authorities would actually allow her to stand. “Why are we talking about permission if this is my right according to the law and I have that possibility and have the necessary qualities to put myself forward?” she responded.&nbsp;

“We are just moving according to the formula prescribed by federal law, and for that we don’t need anyone’s permission,” Duntsova added.&nbsp;

In her interview with Reuters, Duntsova avoided using the word “war” to describe the Russia-Ukraine conflict, which Putin calls his “special military operation",&nbsp;but did acknowledge that she was afraid. “Any sane person taking this step would be afraid - but fear must not win.”&nbsp;

Over his more than two decades in power, Putin has established tight control on Russia’s political system, and with prominent critics in jail or outside the country at risk of arrest, there are no established opposition figures to challenge him.

Russia-Ukraine war: Zelensky says Trump presidency could have 'strong impact' on war

Vladimir Putin told the conference of senior defence officials on Tuesday (Dec 19) that Russia is upgrading its nuclear arsenal amid its ongoing war against Ukraine and Western fears of nuclear conflict.&nbsp;

Putin said that Moscow is keeping its strategic forces at the highest level of readiness as the West wages a "hybrid war" against it.&nbsp;

"Due to the changing character of military threats and as new military and political risks arise, the role of the nuclear triad has significantly increased. It ensures a strategic balance of power in the world," Putin said as translated by the news agency Reuters.&nbsp;

"Overall, the level of modern weaponry in the strategic nuclear forces has been brought (up) to 95 per cent. When it comes to naval forces, it's almost (at) 100 per cent. By the end of the year, 15 Yars and Avangard missile complexes will be deployed for service," he added.&nbsp;

"We need to continue maintaining combat readiness of the strategic forces at the highest level. All the approved goals in this area will be reached without a doubt," he further said.&nbsp;

He highlighted that "the myth of the invulnerability of Western military equipment has also collapsed".&nbsp;

Vladimir Putin is confident of victory in war, says goals have not changed in Ukraine

At least one civilian has been killed and 11 others were injured after Russia overnight launched 42 drones and six missiles at Ukraine’s southern regions, said the Ukrainian military, on Thursday (Dec 14). Kyiv’s forces claimed to have shot down 41 out of 42 drones during the attack on the southern Ukrainian region of Odesa. &nbsp;

The attack also comes a day after 10 ballistic&nbsp;missiles were fired at the Ukrainian capital, according to the Ukrainian military. Kyiv’s mayor said at least 53 people were injured in the “enemy attack,” the second offensive in a week after a long hiatus.

“The defenders of the sky managed to shoot down 41 out of 42 Shahed-136/131 attack drones. The vast majority of them were shot down in Odesa region,” said the Ukrainian Air Force, in a post on Telegram.&nbsp;

According to the Ukrainian forces, Russia also launched six S-300 anti-aircraft-guided missiles from the occupied Kherson region.&nbsp;

The wreckage from the downed drones damaged more than a dozen buildings in the southern city of Odesa and 11 civilians, including three children, were injured, said the Ukrainian military.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, in the neighbouring Kherson region, one person was killed following an overnight missile strike, reported Reuters citing emergency services. A medical facility, private house and garage were also destroyed, according to the news agency.&nbsp;

Ukrainian air defence systems downed all 10 ballistic missiles that targeted the capital at about 3:00 am (local time), said Ukraine’s air force on Telegram.&nbsp;

In a social media post, the Ukrainian police said some 18 people had been hospitalised after the attack.&nbsp;

At least one civilian killed, 11 injured after Russian drone, missile attacks in southern Ukraine: Kyiv

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky reached Capitol Hill on Tuesday (Dec 12) morning to meet the members of the Congress and newly minted House Speaker Mike Johnson before meeting President Joe Biden at the White House to discuss critical aid that his troops need in the war against Russia.&nbsp;

This is Zelensky's third visit to the US but unlike the maiden trip last year when he was serenaded by both houses and sent back&nbsp;with a $50 billion cheque, it looks highly unlikely that he will receive a similar treatment this time.&nbsp;

The Republicans, ahead of the crucial presidential election, have put their foot down and are refusing to send additional weapons and other aid unless it is paired with a crackdown on migration from the south of the border (Mexico).&nbsp;

With winter already here, Moscow is expected to ramp up its attack on civilian and energy infrastructure in Ukraine. Zelensky is worried that the aid faucet may run dry and thus another round of funding is required to continue the war, which has already been going on for over 21 months.&nbsp;

<h2>Zelensky's previous meeting with Biden</h2>

Notably, Zelensky&nbsp;met Biden in September and after much back and forth, managed to walk away with another tranche of aid package from Washington. However, his demand to address the joint session of the US Congress was shot down without giving any major clarification.&nbsp;

Despite the refusal, Biden formally announced a military aid package worth $325 million that included air defence systems and the second tranche of cluster munitions fired by a 155-millimeter Howitzer cannon. Additionally, the US delivered US M1 Abrams tanks to Kyiv to bolster its counteroffensive against the Russians.&nbsp;

The counteroffensive, launched by&nbsp;Ukraine under Zelensky earlier this year, has made little to no inroads. His visit to Washington is an attempt to regroup and secure military funding for another round of defence.&nbsp;

In recent days, Moscow has tried to intensify the assaults by using a record number of drones, according to Kyiv. Moreover, Putin has hinted towards a major change in strategy as he signed a decree that allows the army to boost its troop numbers by 15 per cent.

According to estimates, the move is expected to increase the number of serving army soldiers by at least 170,000, which is being touted as an&nbsp;"adequate" response to the "aggressive activity of the NATO bloc".

Zelensky arrives in Capitol to secure another round of funding from Biden

Russia has lost nearly 90 per cent of its total number of active-duty ground troops which it had before launching its invasion of Ukraine, reported the American media citing a declassified intelligence report by the United States. The report also comes as the Ukrainian president is in the midst of a visit to Washington and made a last-ditch plea for more military aid to US lawmakers on Capitol Hill.&nbsp;

<h2>Russia suffers heavy losses</h2>

A report by Reuters citing a source familiar with the intelligence, on Tuesday (Dec 12) said that Russia began its full-scale invasion of Ukraine in February 2022 with 360,000 personnel.&nbsp;

Since then, according to the report at least 315,000 Russian troops, or about 87 per cent of the total number of troops have been killed or injured.&nbsp;

The report has attributed this staggering loss to the relaxed recruitment standards for deployment in Ukraine, the source told Reuters.&nbsp;

“The scale of losses has forced Russia to take extraordinary measures to sustain its ability to fight. Russia declared a partial mobilization of 300,000 personnel in late 2022, and has relaxed standards to allow recruitment of convicts and older civilians,” the source told the news agency.&nbsp;

However, these losses have not stopped Russian President Vladimir Putin who is determined to push forward as the war approaches its second anniversary early next year.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, US President Joe Biden has warned American lawmakers about handing a victory to Russia and reaffirmed support for the war-torn country.&nbsp;

So far, the US has sent more than $100 billion in aid to Ukraine, and Republicans are sceptical about sending more aid to Kyiv.&nbsp;

“The idea that Ukraine was going to throw Russia back to the 1991 borders was preposterous,” JD Vance, a Republican senator from the US state of Ohio said on CNN’s State of the Union over the weekend, suggesting that Kyiv may have to cede land to Russia to end the invasion.

“So what we’re saying to the president and really to the entire world is, you need to articulate what the ambition is. What is $61 billion going to accomplish that $100 billion hasn’t?” he added.&nbsp;

The Republican senator was referring to Biden’s broader $106 billion emergency spending package – which is pending approval from Congress – out of which $61 billion is allocated for military funds for Ukraine. &nbsp;&nbsp;

<h2>Russia lost thousands of tanks, armoured vehicles</h2>

The Russian army reportedly has lost two-thirds of its pre-invasion tanks, going as far as dipping into Soviet-era stockpiles of older equipment to keep up. The Russian army began the war with 3,100 tanks out of which they have lost 2,200, reported Reuters.&nbsp;

Moscow also has had to “backfill” that force with T62 tanks produced in the 1970s, leaving only 1,300 tanks on the battlefield, according to US intelligence. Meanwhile, CNN citing the assessment said that the war has “sharply set back 15 years of Russian effort to modernize its ground force.”

The American media outlet citing a previously declassified report said Russia seemingly believes that the military deadlock will last through winter and “drain” the Western support for Ukraine and “ultimately give Russia the advantage” despite heavy losses. &nbsp;&nbsp; &nbsp;

However, since neither Russia nor Ukraine released official figures, they could be far from accurate. Russian officials have previously dismissed&nbsp;Western estimates of Russian death tolls in the war and called them&nbsp;vastly exaggerated.

In October this year, Tsaryiv was shot twice but survived. The attack took place in Crimea that was occupied by Russia&nbsp;from Ukraine in 2014. Reuters has reported citing a source in Ukraine's SBU intelligence agency that this was an SBU operation.

Russian intelligence says cracked network of Ukrainian agents in Crimea

A former pro-Russian member of the Ukrainian parliament was shot dead near Moscow, the responsibility for the alleged assassination, according to media reports, has been claimed by Kyiv. Notably, Kyiv, since the beginning of Moscow’s invasion, is reportedly said to be behind several assassinations and attacks on pro-war Russian and former Ukrainian officials who have backed Russia’s “special military operation”.

<h2>What happened to the former Ukrainian lawmaker?</h2>

The former Ukrainian lawmaker identified as Illia Kyva was shot dead in a park in the Odintsovo region southwest of Moscow. News agencies, AFP and Reuters citing sources have said that the attack was orchestrated by the Security Service of Ukraine (SBU) after he defected to Moscow when Russia invaded last year.&nbsp;

Meanwhile, Russian investigators said they have opened an investigation into the incident and will hunt for the suspect. “An unknown person fired shots at the victim from an unidentified weapon."

“The man died on the spot from his injuries,” said Russia’s Investigative Committee, in a statement. A report by Russian news agency TASS citing a police officer said that the investigation is being treated as a “Ukrainian plot” and a search for the killer is underway.&nbsp;

Ukraine’s military intelligence spokesperson Andriy Yusov also seemingly hinted that Kyva was assassinated. “We can confirm that Kyva is done. Such a fate will befall other traitors of Ukraine, as well as the henchmen of the (Russian President Vladimir) Putin regime,"&nbsp;Yusov said.

He also went on to call Kyva “one of the biggest scumbags, traitors and collaborators” and said his death was “justice,” as quoted by CBS News.&nbsp;

<h2>‘Soaked in Nazism’</h2>

Kyva, who was a member of the Ukrainian parliament before the Russian invasion, has been in Moscow throughout the war and often criticised officials in Kyiv online. The former lawmaker has been sentenced in absentia by a Ukrainian court to 14 years in prison for charges, including treason and incitement to violence.

As per AFP, before Russia began its “special military operation” in Ukraine, Kyva said the country has been “soaked by Nazism” and needed “liberating” by Moscow – echoing talking points which have regularly been used by Russian media, officials, even the country’s president in his speech since before launching the attack on Kyiv.&nbsp;

Kyva had reportedly also written to Putin requesting Russian citizenship and fled to Moscow before the beginning of the war in February 2022. The next month, Kyva was officially expelled from the Ukrainian parliament and charged with high treason for colluding with Russia.&nbsp;

<h2>Another assassination by Kyiv?</h2>

In a separate incident, which also took place on Wednesday (Dec 6), a proxy lawmaker in Ukraine’s eastern Lugansk region was killed in a car bombing attack, according to Russian investigators.&nbsp;

Kyiv assassinates pro-Russian former Ukrainian politician near Moscow: Reports

The United States charged four pro-Russian soldiers with war crimes on Wednesday for the abduction and torture of an American national in Ukraine.

Attorney General Merrick Garland said the charges against the four "Russia-affiliated military personnel" were the first to be brought under a US war crimes statute passed by Congress nearly 30 years ago.

Garland, speaking to reporters, said Russian forces in Ukraine had committed "atrocities on the largest scale in any European armed conflict since the Second World War."

"As the world has witnessed the horrors of&nbsp;Russia's brutal invasion of Ukraine, so has the United States Department of Justice," he said. "The Justice Department will work for as long as it takes to pursue accountability and justice for&nbsp;Russia's war of aggression."

According to the indictment, two of those charged -- Suren Seiranovich Mkrtchyan, 45, and Dmitry Budnik -- were commanding officers of military units of the "Russian Armed Forces and/or the so-called Donetsk People's Republic."

The two others charged in the indictment brought in a federal court in Virginia were lower-ranking military personnel, identified by only their first names: Valerii and Nazar.

The Justice Department said Mkrtchyan and the others abducted the US national in April 2022 from his home in the village of Mylove in the Kherson Oblast region in southern Ukraine where he had been living with his wife.

<h2>Mock execution&nbsp;</h2>

The American, who was not identified, was not participating in the armed conflict between&nbsp; Russia&nbsp;and Ukraine, the department said in a statement.

"Acting on behalf of the Russian Armed Forces and the so-called Donetsk People's Republic, these four individuals allegedly violated the human rights of an American citizen," said Katrina Berger, executive associate director&nbsp;of Homeland Security Investigations.

"According to the charges, they unlawfully detained and tortured the American citizen, and even went so far as to carry out a mock execution," Berger said.

The American was held for least 10 days, repeatedly interrogated, threatened with sexual assault and tortured.

"Mkrtchyan, Valerii, Nazar, and others allegedly threw the victim face down to the ground while he was naked, tied his hands behind his back, pointed a gun at his head, and severely beat him," the Justice Department said.

At one point, Budnik allegedly threatened to kill the victim and asked for his last words.

"Shortly thereafter, Nazar and others allegedly conducted a mock execution," the Justice Department said. "They allegedly forced the victim to the ground, put a gun to the back of his head, then moved the gun slightly and shot a bullet just past the victim's head."

The four are charged with three war crimes -– unlawful confinement, torture, and inhuman treatment -– and one count of conspiracy to commit war crimes.

If taken into custody and convicted they face a maximum sentence of life in prison.

Garland told reporters more indictments could be expected under the war crimes statute, which gives the Justice Department jurisdiction to prosecute war crimes committed against US citizens abroad.

Russian President Vladimir Putin toured an exhibition of Russian achievements reportedly on Monday (Dec 4). He was shown a simulation of the "nuclear button", but&nbsp;declined to press it.&nbsp;

Putin also watched a recreated nuclear explosion at a Cold War bunker as nuclear war threat continues to loom amid the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war. Russia has already approved a bill revoking the ratification of the Comprehensive Nuclear Test Ban Treaty (CTBT).&nbsp;

During the course of Ukraine's war, which started last year on February 24, Putin has often warned the West by saying that Russia would retaliate if anyone tried to launch a nuclear attack against it.&nbsp;

The tensions escalated after Putin deployed tactical nuclear missiles in Belarus and shifted Russia's stance on two major arms treaties. Moscow has insisted that it is not recklessly "brandishing" atomic weapons or changing its doctrine on their use.&nbsp;

This tour also came ahead of a re-election campaign as Putin is expected this month to confirm that he will run for another six-year term in March.&nbsp;

He was also seen selecting from among wishes that children had pinned to a Christmas tree in the hope he could make them come true.&nbsp;
