According to Canadian Justice Minister David Lametti, Canada has asked for the extradition of a French priest who is accused of molesting Indigenous children more than 30 years ago. Lametti said in an email to AFP, "I am aware that an extradition request sent to France has been made public, which ministry officials have just confirmed. It is important for Canada and its international partners that serious crimes are fully investigated and prosecuted."

"Turkiye has legitimate concerns for security reasons, which we, of course, take into account," said Dmitry Peskov as he addressed reporters.

"It is very important not to allow any action that could lead to destabilisation of the situation in Syria, or that could jeopardize the territorial and political integrity of Syria," he added.

The meeting between Putin and Erdogan will take place in the Black Sea resort city of Sochi on Friday (August 5). Pescov said Syria will be on the agenda of the talks.

Turkiye has been threatening for months that it would launch an operation against Kurdish fighters in Syria.

At a summit in Teheran last month, Putin expressed Russia's opposition to Erdogan's planned offensive.&nbsp;

Russia and Turkey are two major international players in Syria, a country torn apart by war since 2011, in which Moscow backed Damascus and Ankara the opposition groups.&nbsp;

During their meeting on Friday, the two leaders will also discuss Ukraine, where Moscow has been conducting what it calls a special military operation since February.

Russia appeals Turkiye to not 'destabilise' situation in Syria

Russia may have launched a "spy satellite" to stalk an American spy satellite. A few months back, in February, the United States launched USA 326, a spy satellite aboard a SpaceX Falcon 9 rocket. Now, on Monday (August 2), a Russian satellite called Kosmos 2558, which is rumoured to be an "inspector aircraft".&nbsp;As per a report by Space.com even before the Russian satellite's launch rumours of it being a spy satellite to keep an eye on its US counterpart have been floating.&nbsp;Netherlands-based satellite tracker Marco Langbroek in a blogpost comments "Before the launch, there was a rumour that this was another 'inspector' satellite - a snooping satellite meant to covertly inspect another satellite."

He goes on to point out that the longitude or the right ascension of the ascending node (RAAN) "of the newly launched Kosmos 2558 matches the RAAN of USA 326 closely, with a difference of only 0.04 degree (changing by about 0.01 degree/day)."

The two spacecraft are close to one another in altitude and are anticipated to have a close encounter, assuming neither makes any major manoeuvres during the following few days.

NASA's archive for space science mission data: the NASA Space Science Data Coordinated Archive, describes USA 326 as a "classified payload". It is widely believed to be a new generation electro-optical IMINT satellite.&nbsp;

As per the Drive, the National Reconnaissance Office (NRO) and SpaceX are working together on NROL-87, a secret national security programme, for this mission. According to a press release issued by the NRO after the initial launch, NROL-87 was created, constructed, and is currently being operated by the NRO to support its "overhead reconnaissance mission," which is primarily focused on ensuring national security by utilising space-based intelligence, surveillance, and reconnaissance (ISR).

A court in Russia sentenced a former policeman who was an activist for police labour rights to five years in jail under charges of extortion and distribution of pornography. Vladimir Vorontsov, the policeman, was arrested in May 2020. He was in detention for nearly three years. He has denied any wrongdoing.

He was also stripped of police rank of major. He has also been banned from administering blogs for 10 years.

Supporters say the real reason for Vorontsov's punishment was his Police Ombudsman project, a series of social media accounts dedicated to protecting police officers' rights and exposing abuse by their superiors.&nbsp;

He set up his project in 2017 when he was still in police service.

Vorontsov later established close contacts with opposition activists.

Vorontsov's case after his arrest at the time sparked a rare public outcry among police, a key pillar of President Vladimir Putin's rule. Vorontsov was detained in a spectacular fashion.

During an early-morning raid, two commando teams stormed the former policeman's top-floor apartment in southeast Moscow, one abseiling&nbsp;down the high-rise while the other broke down the door.

In the most recent wave of penalties related to the invasion of Ukraine, the United States blacklisted the alleged lover of Russian President Vladimir Putin and the businessman who owns the second-largest estate in London on Tuesday. Several other oligarchs thought to be connected to Putin, four Russian administrators of the occupied regions in Ukraine, and about two dozen high-tech institutions and businesses, including significant state-backed electronics firms, were also subject to US business prohibitions.

The Witanhurst estate, the second-largest estate in London after Buckingham Palace, is owned by billionaire Andrey Grigoryevich Guryev, a close friend of Vladimir Putin. The founder and former vice chairman of PhosAgro, a significant provider to the world's fertiliser markets, is Guryev. Financial penalties were imposed on him and his son, prohibiting them from doing business with US entities (including banks with U.S. branches) and freezing their assets under US jurisdiction.

Alina Kabaeva, a former Olympic gymnast who is frequently referred to as Putin's girlfriend, and Natalya Popova, the wife of Kirill Dmitriev, the head of the sizable sovereign wealth fund run by the Russian government, were both sanctioned by the Treasury. According to the Treasury, Popova works for Innopraktika, a technological company that is owned by one of Putin's daughters.

The penalties included visa restrictions. A list of over 900 Russian officials as well as 31 unnamed non-Russian officials who have supported Russia's occupation of Crimea and nearly 900 other individuals were also added, according to the State Department.

Russia’s invasion of Ukraine began on February 24 this year and has led to massive loss of life, a refugee crisis unseen since World War II and major food shortages.

As part of a deal between Russia and Ukraine, a cargo ship carrying the first delivery of grain from Ukraine since the Kremlin's invasion, successfully departed from Odesa on Monday. The Razoni will further move towards Lebanon via Turkish waters.&nbsp;

Russia said on Friday (July 29) that it supported 'One China' policy on Taiwan. This development has taken place after Chinese President Xi Jinping warned US President Joe Biden that US should not play with fire over Taiwan.

"Our position on the existence of only one China remains unchanged," Lavrov told reporters in Tashkent. "We have no problem with upholding the principle of China's sovereignty."

China considers Taiwan its own territory and has not ruled out use of force to take control of it. Chinese fighters have repeatedly entered Taiwan's Air Defence Zone in recent past.

The Kremlin echoed Lavrov's comments and expressed 'solidarity' with China.

"Certainly we are in solidarity," Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters.

"We respect China's sovereignty and territorial integrity and believe that no country in the world should have the right to question this or take any inflammatory or other steps," he added.

"We are convinced that such behaviour on the international arena can only cause additional tension."

Economic revival hope fails after Russia-Ukraine grain deal crashes as Russia cuts gas supply to Europe

Russia is planning to hold big military exercise in the east thousands of miles away from where war in Ukraine is raging. The military exercise is planned for next month. The 'Vostok' exercises are slated to take place from August 30 to September 5.

They appear intended to send a message that Russia, despite the costly five-month war in Ukraine, remains focused on the defence of its entire territory and capable in military terms of sustaining "business as usual".

Russian military has emphasised in a statement that its capacity to hold drills remains unaffected. The statement said that no training activity had been cancelled and all necessary personnel, equipment and weapons will be supplied for the exercise.

"We draw your attention to the fact that only a part of the Armed Forces of the Russian Federation is involved in the special military operation (in Ukraine), the number of which is quite sufficient to fulfil all the tasks set by the Supreme Commander-in-Chief," the statement said.

Some foreign media were spreading false information about "some kind of alleged mobilisation activities", it added.

After its invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has suffered heavy losses and it progress has been slow. However, Russian President Vladimir Putin has not ordered mobilisation of reserves. The reserves are estimated to include 2 million people.

CIA Director William Burns has said that about 15,000 Russian troops had been killed in Ukraine conflict. This is as many deaths as the Soviet army suffered during its decade-long occupation of Afghanistan in late seventies and eighties.

The upcoming military exercises have been planned to take place in the eastern military district. This includes part of Siberia. Headquarters of the eastern military district are in Khabarovsk, near the Chinese border.

In Russia’s remote Dikson settlement in the Arctic region, veterinarians have rescued a young female polar bear after the animal got a condensed milk can stuck in its mouth.

Before removing the sharp metal from its mouth, the Russian Natural Resources watchdog tranquillised the animal with a dart.

With a supply of fish left for the animal to eat as it would not be able to hunt on its own for some time, the bear named Monetochka was transported from Dikson to its natural environment.

Highlighting that the can had damaged the animal's tongue, a veterinarian from Moscow Zoo, Mikhail Alshinetsky said "It will most likely recover because the underlying muscles are not affected, the skin on the surface is damaged."

According to multiple news sources, the proposal put forth by the European Union to cut gas use by 15 per cent in anticipation of possible Russian supply cuts, has been met with disapproval from member countries.

Give us a say or a veto power: EU member states

Reportedly, at least 12 of the 27 member states have raised questions regarding the proposal. France, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, Ireland, Portugal and Malta among other countries demanded the EU give the member nations a chance to present their opinion about the proposal, or perhaps even, a veto power.&nbsp;

It is pertinent to note that the EU had brought this proposition last Wednesday and asked the EU countries to use 15 per cent less gas, compared to their average over the last five years, from August to March.&nbsp;

The gas conundrum

As reported extensively by WION, ever since Russia closed the Nord Stream 1 pipeline, citing maintenance, the entire EU had gone into a fit. Russia and its state-owned gas company Gazprom even threatened to close the supply for good.

A chess-playing robot broke a seven-year-old boy’s finger&nbsp;during a tournament in Moscow, Russia, after the kid went for a swift move without waiting for the necessary time for the machine to complete its action.

The incident took place on July 19 at the Moscow Chess Open tournament. The vice president of the Chess Federation of Russia, Sergey Smagin, told state-owned news agency RIA Novosti that the boy is fine and that his fingers have been fractured, reports Newsweek.

"The boy is all right. They put a plaster cast on the finger to heal faster. Yes, there are certain safety rules and the child, apparently, violated them and, when he made a move, did not notice that he had to wait. This is an extremely rare case, the first I can recall," he was quoted as saying.

A video has since gone viral, showing that the kid had his fingers trapped by the robot for a few seconds before a woman rushes to help him. Three men then intervene and manage to free the boy's finger from the robot's hold.

This step is being recommended to secure winter stocks and fight Russian "blackmail". EU commissioners have announced an emergency plan and has urged member states to give Brussels powers to impose compulsory energy rationing in case Russia cuts Europe's gas.

Last year Russia provided 40 per cent of Europe's total consumption of natural gas. However, in the wake of Ukraine conflict and EU imposing sanctions on Russia, it is widely expected that Russia would significantly reduce gas supply as a retaliatory measure. It has already started to do so.&nbsp;

Any further disruption to supply would also push consumer prices higher and raise the risk of a deep recession.

"Russia is blackmailing us," European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen told reporters.&nbsp;

"Russia is using energy as a weapon and therefore, in any event, whether it's a partial major cut off of Russian gas or total cut off... Europe needs to be ready."&nbsp;

Europe is eagerly watching whether Russia will resume gas supplies via the Nord Stream 1 pipeline on Thursday when scheduled maintenance is due to be completed.

German pipeline manager Gascade said it expected Russian gas deliveries to resume at 40 percent of capacity, the level of supplies before maintenance work.

On Wednesday evening, the president of Germany's Federal Network Agency Klaus Mueller estimated on Twitter that the delivery on Thursday might only be "around 30 percent" of the capacity, after updating the data.

EU asks countries to cut gas use to tackle Russian 'blackmail'

The Nord Stream 1 key gas pipeline connecting Russia to Europe is in the process of resuming deliveries, the pipeline operator said on Thursday, after it was closed for maintenance earlier this month.

The resumption of operations is likely to provide a major relief to the European countries, who were scrambling to find alternative sources amid concerns that Russia may not resume supplies in retaliation to the western sanctions.

''We are in the process of resuming gas transportation through the pipeline. It can take some time to reach the nominated transport volume,'' a Nord Stream 1 spokesperson told CNN on Thursday.

Klaus Müller, the president of Germany's Federal Network Agency, said on Twitter that the pipeline was running at about 30 per cent of capacity and that this amount was guaranteed for two hours.

But it is unclear whether Russia would supply the same amount of gas over the pipeline as it had been delivering before the shutdown.

Earlier, the European Union has asked member states to cut consumption of natural gas by 15 per cent over the coming months after pipeline was shut down for maintenance.

“Russia is blackmailing us. Russia is using energy as a weapon. And therefore, in any event, whether it’s a partial major cutoff of Russian gas or total cutoff of Russian gas, Europe needs to be ready,” EU Commission President Ursula von der Leyen was quoted as saying.

Though the initial cuts would be voluntary, the commission has asked member states to impose mandatory reductions across the bloc in case Russia pulls the plug suddenly.

“The European Union faces the risk of further gas-supply cuts from Russia due to the Kremlin’s weaponisation of gas exports,” the European Commission said in a statement, reports Bloomberg.

“Taking action now can reduce both the risk and the costs for Europe in case of further or full disruption.”
