Following Russia's invasion on February 24, the soldiers, who were a part of a group that fought for weeks from a sizable steelworks in the southern port of Mariupol, claimed during a news conference in Kyiv that their captors sought to force them to confess to atrocities against civilians.

Russia has already been charged with war crimes by Ukraine, but Moscow has refuted the claims.&nbsp;

Vladyslav Zhaivoronok, who lost a leg, said, "I was interrogated even before I started receiving antibiotics after my limb was amputated."&nbsp;

"The guys who were there were tortured. Some had needles inserted into their wounds, some were tortured with water, some received inadequate treatment " he explained, according to a Reuters report.

The three individuals were traded for Russian POWs. Although the exact date of the exchange was not immediately known, Ukraine declared in June that Russia had released 144 prisoners.&nbsp;

Zhaivoronok served in the national guard's Azov Regiment. Azov included some individuals with far-right and ultranationalist roots.

Hundreds of Azov forces gave up in May after weeks of combat from the steelworks' tunnels and bunkers. The Russian Supreme Court declared the regiment to be a terrorist organisation on August 2, despite the fact that the Azov inmates have not yet received formal charges.&nbsp;

In order to demilitarise its smaller neighbour and safeguard Russian-speaking minorities, Russia invaded Ukraine in what it refers to as a "special military operation." Moscow is accused of pursuing an imperial-style war of conquest by Ukraine and its Western sponsors.

The US has information suggesting that Russia is preparing to shortly conduct new assaults against the government and civilian infrastructure of Ukraine,&nbsp; an American official has said on Monday.

“We have information that Russia is stepping up efforts to launch strikes against Ukraine’s civilian infrastructure and government facilities in the coming days. Given Russia’s track record in Ukraine, we are concerned about the continued threat that Russian strikes pose to civilians and civilian infrastructure," the official said, as reported by Reuters.

The assertion, according to the official, was supported by American intelligence.

This week marks six months since Vladimir Putin issued an order for tens of thousands of Russian soldiers to invade Ukraine for a "special military operation"—a magnitude of invasion not seen in Europe since World War II. As a result of Russia's continuous bombardment, tens of thousands have died, millions have fled, and cities have been completely destroyed.&nbsp;

At least four persons were hurt by Russian rockets fired at Nikopol, Krivyi Rih, and Synelnykovsky, which are all close to the largest nuclear power plant in Europe, Zaporizhzhia, overnight, according to regional governor Valentyn Reznichenko's Telegram post.&nbsp;

According to the General Staff of Ukraine, Russian forces damaged the Soledar, Zaytseve, and Bilogorivka regions in the eastern Bakhmut region using artillery and multiple rocket launcher systems.

In the southeast of Ukraine's Odesa region, Russia claimed that its Kalibr missiles had targeted a granary, while Kyiv claimed that a missile stockpile including missiles for a US-made HIMARS rocket had been hit.&nbsp;

The commander of Ukraine's armed forces reported that about 9,000 military soldiers from his country had died in the conflict with Russia.&nbsp;

According to local authorities, Ukraine's capital Kyiv forbade public celebrations this week honouring the country's independence from the Russian-dominated Soviet Union, and its second-largest city Kharkiv imposed a curfew because of an increased risk of Russian aggression.

Russia planning strikes on Ukraine civilian infrastructure soon: US intelligence

As Ukraine's independence day from Russia approaches (August 24), all eyes are on the Ukraine war again. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky has already said that Russia might try to do something to reduce the symbolic and morale-boosting value of Ukrainian independence day. On the eve of the important day for Ukraine, WION's Mohammed Saleh spoke with Yuriy Sak, advisor to Ukraine's defence minister.

WION: Mr Sak this a crucial moment in terms of what is happening in the war. Tomorrow marks exactly six months since Russia invaded Ukraine. Also tomorrow is your 31st independence anniversary from the former Soviet Union. And in keeping with this, Ukraine has said that it has received intelligence that Russia may try to do something reallu ugly. What is the threat you perceive from Russia tomorrow?

Yuriy Sak: Hello and thank you for inviting me. Indeed tomorrow is a great national celebration for our country. It's our independence day and this is a celebration that we take very seriously. This will also be the day when we will have six months of aggressive war against Ukraine. And I want to stress that this is a war Russian aggressor was hoping to conduct in three days. They were planning to conquer the whole of Ukraine in maximum of seven days. And our Minister of Defence Oleksiy Reznikov, he personally saw, in the Russian tanks which were left by the occupiers in Kyiv, parade uniforms. They were planning to conduct this war very quickly, to destroy Ukrainian leadership, and to occupy our territory completely. Instead of that what we have now is parade of destroyed Russian tanks on Kyiv central street.&nbsp;

We as a nation have been very very heroically defending our country and European freedom from the Russian aggressor. Ahead of tomorrow's celebrations, we are of course now on high-alert because Russia in addition to being a war criminal and terrorist state has a very strange way of treating certain dates. Ukraine's independence is something that Russia wants to destroy. It wants to destroy Ukrainian people. This is why we are referring to this as genocide. And this is why we are calling on the international community to recognise Russia officially as state sponsor of terrorism.

So tomorrow is a big day. But I want to also stress that we have been living in an atmosphere of missile terror from Russia for last six months. Every day, Russia conducts missile strikes on Ukrainian cities. Every day, peaceful Ukrainian citizens are dying in these missile strikes. So in a sense, tomorrow will be, unfortunately, an ordinary day in the new normal we've been living in since February 24. But we hope that our fears will not come true. And we hope that tomorrow's celebrations will not be spoilt by another atrocity on the part of Russia.

WION: This is the issue that a lot of people are talking about around the world, especially in the aftermath of what has happened to Darya Dugina, the daughter of Alexander Dugin, the philosopher and the far-right thinker, someone who is considered to be the brain of Vladimir Putin. Russia has unequivocally accused Ukraine of carrying out her assassination. What does Ukraine have to say for it?

Yuriy Sak: Our official position is very simple. We are not Russians. We are not terrorists. We do not fight with civillian population. We even don't fight with civillians who are hateful towards Ukraine. Because as you probably know, Mr Dugin used to say that Ukrainians must be killed and killed. And his late daughter who was killed in that accident, we are prone to believe that this was a false flag terrorist operation. Our intelligence agencies say that this most probably was an insider job. It was a provocation by the Russians. We do not carry killings of those people because we are a civilized democracy. We fight our enemy on the battlefield. And we value their human life very highly.

WION: I need to ask you about what has happened in Crimea over the course of last 10-12 days. Because your President Volodymyr Zelensky has been saying that Ukraine will stage a counter-attack, that Ukraine will re-conquer Crimea which has been occupied by Russia. What we've seen over the course of last 10-15 days, that there has been a series of mysterious and unexplained explosions which have targetted Russian military installations. Ukraine hasn't directly claimed responsibility for a lot of these attacks that have taken place in Crimea. But is Ukraine behind these explosions?

Yuriy Sak: Let's be clear. Crimea is a sovereign territory of Ukraine. It is an internationally recognised territory of Ukraine which was illegally annexed by Russia in 2014. This is an internationally recognised fact. Point number 2, we have two things to say to Russian occupiers, and this has been our position all the while. Since Crimea is part of Ukraine, we will liberate it sooner or later. It just depends on how quickly we receive interational assistance and high-precision weaponry.

Third point, all we have to say to Russian occupiers who are in Crimea as well as other temporarily occupied parts of Ukraine, they have to get out from our country.

Ukraine is on high alert as I-day approaches, top Ukrainian official tells WION

The entire continent of Europe is up in arms once again. Russia and its state-owned energy giant Gazprom has announced that the all-important Nord Stream 1 gas pipeline will remain shut down for three days for 'routine maintenance', starting August 31.

"On August 31, 2022, the only gas compressor unit that is currently in operation, Trent 60 will be shut down for a three-day servicing and preventive maintenance period," said Gazprom in an official statement. In the immediate aftermath of the announcement, natural gas prices in Europe skyrocketed as countries looked to build reserves, fearing the temporary halt may very well extend beyond three days. According to reports, the currency slid as much as one per cent to as low as $0.9934 in the afternoon. Moreover, the Dutch TTF hub, a European benchmark for natural gas trading saw a hike of 19 per cent to reach $292.9 per megawatt hour. Investment bank Citi has warned that the energy bills, exacerbated by the frequent shutdowns and low supply will drive UK inflation to over 18 per cent early next year. An average UK household is expected to shell out as much as $5,000, come the winters. Meanwhile, UK natural gas prices have risen nearly 96 per cent in the year to July, while electricity prices are up 54 per cent. Despite being against Russia since its invasion of Ukraine, the European countries have remained toothless against Moscow which has used its position of dominance to circumvent the sanctions. Furthermore, as reported extensively by WION, this is not the first time that Russia has attempted to leverage its position to bring the European countries on their knees. In July too, Russia closed Nord Stream 1 citing maintenance and that the 12-metre turbine used to operate the pipeline was stuck in Canada for repairs. However, after 10 days, the supply resumed but it never managed to hit the pre-maintenance levels. Gazprom has stated that the pipeline will resume in line with current volumes of 33 million cubic meters a day, which is only about 20 per cent of the total capacity of the pipeline. The war has been going on for months and yet the European continent has only been able to reduce their combined gas dependency on Russia by a tiny five per cent. It further continued, "If in a home or a building, go to the lowest level of the structure with the fewest exterior walls, windows, and openings; close any doors and sit near an interior wall, away from any windows or openings."

The United States on Monday condemned the targeted killing of civilians, saying it stands against such practices, whether they occur in Ukraine or Russia.

The reason behind the targeted killing by Russia is the killing of Darya Dugina, daughter of a close adviser to the Russian president, in a car bomb blast on Saturday night.

At least 16 people were killed with another three injured in an accident in Russia that involved a collision between a lorry and a stationary minibus. The accident took place in Russia's Ulyanovsk region on Sunday (August 21).

"According to preliminary data, the driver of a heavy goods vehicle did not slow down in good time and hit a stationary minibus," the Ulyanovsk region's interior ministry said in a statement. The ministry was quoted by Reuters.

AFP quoted reports by news agencies to say that the bus was travelling in the opposite direction near the village of Nikolayevka.

At the time of the accident, the minibus was also hit from behind by another truck. According to footage broadcast by Russian television channel Ren TV, the minibus was almost completely flattened by the two trucks.&nbsp;

Russia: Minibus sandwiched between trucks in accident, killing 16

Of particular concern was the shelling of Nikopol, a city which lies across the Dnipro river from Zaporizhzhia, Ukraine's and Europe's biggest nuclear plant. It has been held by Russian forces since March.

Nikopol was shelled on five different occasions overnight, regional governor Valentyn Reznichenko wrote on Telegram. He said 25 artillery shells hit the city, causing a fire at an industrial premises and cut&nbsp;power to 3,000 residents.

Russian missiles pound Odesa as Ukrainian Independence Day draws closer

Russian defence ministry on Saturday (August 20), accused Ukraine of poisoning some of its soldiers in Zaporizhzhia, the Russian-controlled part of Ukraine's southeastern region. In response, an adviser to Ukraine's interior ministry said that the alleged poisoning may have taken place due to Russian soldiers eating expired canned meat.

Russian defence ministry alleges that the poisoning took place in the month of July and a number of Russian servicemen were taken to a military hospital with signs of serious poisoning on July 31. The ministry said that tests results showed presence of botulinum type B, a toxic substance in their bodies.

"On the fact of chemical terrorism sanctioned by the (Ukrainian President Volodymyr) Zelensky regime, Russia is preparing supporting evidence with the results of all the analyses," the ministry said in a statement.

The Russian defence ministry said it was conducting an additional investigation into an incident in which Volodymyr Saldo, the Russian-installed administration in Ukraine's occupied Kherson region, had taken ill.

Yusov told NBC News, “There is new information, it arrived about half an hour ago, that for tomorrow, August 19, there is an order for the majority of the staff not to go to work. This is what the Russians told their people, primarily the employees of Rosatom,”&nbsp;referring to the Russian nuclear agency.

According to him, this could be proof that Russia is getting ready to stage "large-scale provocations" at the power plant on Friday. “We do not rule out the possibility of massive Russian provocations on the territory of the ZNPP tomorrow. The Russian defence ministry said the fire broke out at a temporary ammunition storage site near Maiske village around 06.15 Moscow time (03:15 GMT) and added that the cause was being investigated.

The ministry further said that no "serious" casualties have been reported, but a Russian-appointed official said two people had been wounded, reports Reuters news agency.

The cause of the the blasts is unclear, but local media reported that the Russian warplanes were destroyed last week in the Ukrainian attack on the Crimean coast.

The Ukrainian presidential office adviser, Mykhailo Podolyak, posted a cryptic tweet describing&nbsp;the incident as "demilitarisation in action", while hinting that the explosions were part of a targetted attack.

"(The) morning near Dzhankoi began with explosions," wrote Podolyak.

A Tatar leader from Crimea, Refat Chubarov, also called the explosions as a "hit" that could be heard "far across the steppe".

Russia had annexed Crimea, an Ukrainian territory, in 2014. And while launching “military action” against Kyiv early February this year, the Russian forces used the region to capture large swathes of southern Ukraine.

Amid the Russia-Ukraine war and the western world attempting to push Kremlin into the corner by imposing sanctions, the West Asian country of Saudi Arabia is busy playing its own game. Reportedly, Saudi Arabia's Kingdom Holding on Sunday announced that it had invested in top Russian energy companies viz. Gazprom, Lukoil and Rosneft.

Kingdom Holding took to Twitter to share the news of its $3.4 billion investment program. The company stated&nbsp;that it had completed the investment in Russian companies within a one-month period from February to March, earlier this year.&nbsp;

This development comes on the back of Saudi Arabia joining the growing list of countries importing cheap Russian oil despite Western sanctions. As reported by WION, the Gulf country imported 647,000 tonnes of Russian oil in the second quarter, i.e., from April to June. In the same period a year ago, the Kingdom imported 320,000 tonnes of oil.

Experts are of the view that Russian oil is far too cheap for Saudi Arabia to resist the temptation of buying it. The investment in top Russian energy companies only makes further sense as the war continues to linger.&nbsp;

The European Space Agency (ESA) has begun preliminary technical discussions with Elon Musk's SpaceX that could lead to the temporary use of its launchers after the Ukraine conflict blocked Western access to Russia's Soyuz rockets.

The private American competitor to Europe's Arianespace has emerged as a key contender to plug a temporary gap alongside Japan and India, but final decisions depend on the still unresolved timetable for Europe's delayed Ariane 6 rocket.

"I would say there are two and a half options that we're discussing. One is SpaceX that is clear. Another one is possibly Japan," ESA Director General Josef Aschbacher told Reuters.

"Japan is waiting for the inaugural flight of its next generation rocket. Another option could be India," he added in an interview.

"SpaceX I would say is the more operational of those and certainly one of the back-up launches we are looking at."

Aschbacher said talks remained at an exploratory phase.

"We of course need to make sure that they are suitable. It's not like jumping on a bus," he said. For example, the interface between satellite and launcher must be suitable and the payload must not be compromised by unfamiliar types of launch vibration.

"We are looking into this technical compatibility but we have not asked for a commercial offer yet. We just want to make sure that it would be an option in order to make a decision on asking for a firm commercial offer," Aschbacher said.

SpaceX did not reply to a request for comment.

SpaceX's Falcon 9 has already swept up other customers severing ties with Moscow's increasingly isolated space sector amid the Ukraine conflict, but a high-profile European mission could be seen as a significant win for the U.S. rocket maker.

Aschbacher stressed any back-up solution would be temporary, however, adding he was not worried about the future of Ariane 6.

Satellite internet firm OneWeb, a competitor to SpaceX's Starlink satellite internet venture, booked at least one Falcon 9 launch in March. It has also booked an Indian launch.

On Monday, Northrop Grumman booked three Falcon 9 missions to ferry NASA cargo to the International Space Station while it designs a new version of its Antares rocket, whose Russian-made engines were withdrawn by Moscow in response to sanctions.

'WAKE-UP CALL'

Europe has until now depended on the Italian Vega for small payloads, Russia's Soyuz for medium ones and the Ariane 5 for heavy missions. Its next-generation Vega C staged a debut last month and the new Ariane 6, designed in two versions to replace both the Ariane 5 and Soyuz, has been delayed until next year.

Aschbacher said a more precise Ariane 6 schedule would be clearer by October after current hot-firing testing. ESA would then finalise a back-up plan to be presented to ministers of the agency's 22 nations in November, he said, adding the most recent Ariane 6 delay was not the result of any significant new setback.

"But yes, the likelihood of the need for back-up launches is high," he said. "The order of magnitude is certainly a good handful of launches that we would need interim solutions for."

Aschbacher said the Ukraine conflict had demonstrated Europe's decade-long cooperation strategy with Russia in gas supplies and other areas including space was no longer working.

"This was a wake up call, that we have been too dependent on Russia. And this wake-up call, we have to hope that decision makers realise it as much as I do, that we have to really strengthen our European capability and independence."

However, he played down the prospect of Russia carrying out a pledge to withdraw from the International Space Station (ISS).

Russia’s newly appointed space chief Yuri Borisov said in a televised meeting with President Vladimir Putin last month that Russia would withdraw from the ISS "after 2024".

But Borisov later clarified that Russia’s plans had not changed and Western officials said Russia’s space agency had not communicated any new pullout plans.

"The reality is that operationally, the work on the space station is proceeding, I would say almost nominally," Aschbacher told Reuters. "We do depend on each other, like it or not, but we have little choice."

Russian oil giant Transneft on Tuesday made a sensational claim that Ukraine had suspended Russian oil pipeline flows to countries in central Europe citing payment issues.

Reportedly, the southern Druzhba pipeline, also called the Friendship pipeline, has been halted since August 4.&nbsp;The suspension of oil was confirmed by MOL, a Hungarian energy firm and Transpetrol, a Slovak pipeline operator.

An estimated 250,000 barrels per day (bpd) is supplied by the Russian side through this pipeline and&nbsp;if the suspension continues, countries such as Slovakia, Hungary and the Czech Republic might run out of oil as all of them are heavily reliant&nbsp;on Russian crude without any alternative in sight.&nbsp;

An uneven payment system

Transneft explained the issue by citing European financial sanctions which were acting as the bottleneck. Reportedly, Transneft made the payments through&nbsp;Gazprombank which is not on the list of sanctioned Russian companies.

Gazprombank made the payment last month on July 22 but a few days later, July 28 to be precise, the money was returned. It is pertinent to note that under the European Union sanctions, the banks in Europe have to seek approval from respective government authorities.

Earlier, the banks had the authority to decide amongst themselves on accepting and rejecting the payment. However, the officials in Brussels are yet to come up with a cogent mechanism that can help streamline the payment system.

European countries have tried to present a united front against Russia, however, whenever the situation has turned a little pear-shaped, they have backtracked.

The war has been going on for months and yet the European continent has only been able to reduce their combined gas dependency on Russia by a tiny five per cent.&nbsp;Last year, Russia provided a whopping 40 per cent of Europe's total consumption of natural gas.

Moreover, Aeroflot's three out of seven Airbus A350s have already been stripped apart and used to operate on the remaining four jetliners. While switching parts between jets is a known practice, doing so frequently poses a danger to the aircraft's operability efficiency. Many parts have a limited life that must be logged. “If North Korea expresses a desire to meet its international duty to fight against Ukrainian fascism, we should let them,” <a name="_Hlk110931379">Korotchenko</a> was quoted as saying.

Korotchenko’s comments come days after reports emerged that several Russian states are providing so-called “volunteer” forces—a move deemed desperate by some Western intelligence analysts who have taken it as an indication that Vladimir Putin lacks the political capital to order a mass mobilisation within Russia.

Last month, UK’s MI6 chief Richard Moore said that Russia’s war effort was “about to run out of steam.”

“Our assessment is that the Russians will increasingly find it difficult to supply manpower [and] material over the next few weeks,” he was quoted as saying during a Q&amp;A session at the Aspen Security Forum in Colorado.
