ODI World Cup 2023: Ravi Ashwin picked, Gill miss out as Australia bat first against India in Chennai

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin, in an honest reply to an X user, admitted that Shahid Afridi's two sixes in the Asia Cup 2014 were 'really good shots.' Ashwin wrote the comments while a user tried to troll him on X by making him remember Afridi's twin sixes. The whole thread started when Ashwin replied to a Dinesh Karthik post.

Karthik, one of the commentators in upcoming ODI World Cup, tagged Ashwin as he waited for the bowler for an interview on the sidelines of India's warm up game against England on September 30. A user, by the name of Sawal Meer Khan, then wrote in reply to Ashwin: 'Shahid Afridi Still remembers those two sixes'

Ravi Ashwin gives HONEST reply when told to recall Shahid Afridi's two sixes in 2014 Asia Cup

India's veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin made a last-minute entry into the ODI World Cup squad and he is now focused on enjoying the tournament. Ashwin was included in the India squad as a replacement of Axar Patel who unfortunately got injured in the Asia Cup 2023.

While Ashwin did well in the two games he played against Australia in the three-match ODI series after the Asia Cup, the bowler said that dealing with pressure is paramount in the World Cup. Notably, Ashwin took four wickets in two games he played against Australia, including a three-wicket haul in the second ODI.

Speaking on the sidelines of India's warm-up game against England on September 30, Ashwin, however, said that he did not think to be in the World Cup squad.

"I would have said that you were joking. Life is full of surprises. Honestly did not think I would be here. Circumstances have made sure I am here today, the team management have shown trust," said Ashwin when asked if he thought he'd playing in the World Cup.

The ace spinner also talked about if he has any new variation up his sleeve and that this could be his last appearance in the World Cup.

"All you can do is turn the ball both ways, and I think I can do it. Dealing with pressure is paramount in these tournaments and it will dictate how the tournament goes. Being in a good space, enjoying this tournament will keep me in good stead. This could be my last World Cup for India, so enjoying the tournament is of utmost importance," added Ashwin.

Notably, Ashwin is only one of the two India players to feature in both 2011 and 2023 World Cup squad with the other one being Virat Kohli. The bowler, who made his ODI debut for India in 2010, has 155 wickets to his name in 115 games.

Ravi Ashwin talks about 'thing of utmost importance' in his possibly 'last ODI World Cup'

India, being dealt a blow ahead of the commencement of ODI World Cup 2023 when their spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel got ruled out due to injury, have included veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin in the final 15. Following the latest scans, Axar needs approximately three weeks to completely recover from the quadriceps strain he sustained during the Asia Cup 2023, meaning he would have to sit out for at least the first half of the tournament had he been picked.

Here is India's final squad for World Cup 2023 -

Rohit Sharma (captain), Hardik Pandya (vc), Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul, Ravindra Jadeja, Shardul Thakur, Jasprit Bumrah, Mohammed Siraj, Kuldeep Yadav, Mohammed Shami, Ravichandran Ashwin, Ishan Kishan, Suryakumar Yadav

While most of the squad remained the same, Ashwin's addition brought variety to the spin department. Kuldeep Yadav - is India's left-arm unorthodox, Ravindra Jadeja - is the slow left-armer, and Ashwin is an off-spinner.

Ashwin, who hadn't played an ODI in a long time in the lead-up to the World Cup, got roped in at the last minute for the recently-concluded three-match ODIs against Australia. Playing in the first two One-Dayers in Mohali and Indore, respectively, the veteran off-spinner picked up four wickets at 22. Despite being rested for the final game in Rajkot, which India lost by 66 runs, Ashwin remained among the top wicket-takers in this dress rehearsal series for the World Cup 2023.

Ashwin's inclusion means he and Virat Kohli are now the only two players from the 2011 World Cup-winning campaign in the current squad.

With no more changes to the final 15 for the World Cup, India's squad looks the same as the provisional one picked a month earlier.

Captain Rohit Sharma will lead the Team India, while Shubman Gill and Ishan Kishan are among the youngsters. Virat Kohli will headline the home World Cup, with the likes of KL Rahul, Shreyas Iyer and Suryakumar Yadav all fighting for the middle-order slots.

Imran Tahir 'THANKS' Ravi Ashwin after leading Amazon Warriors to maiden CPL title; breaks THIS MS Dhoni feat

Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin put up a strong case for inclusion in India's World Cup squad with a dominant bowling display in the second ODI against Australia on September 24 in Indore. The offie, who was included in the squad for Australia ODIs after Axar Patel got injured in the Asia Cup, took three wickets in the second ODI after taking one in the Mohali game.

While Ashwin hasn't been able to bat yet in two ODIs, thanks to some dominant batting displays by India batters, he sure showed skills as a bowler. He also took two wickets in one over in Indore, dismissing both David Warner and Josh Inglis, to derail Australia's chase.

Both the batsmen tried to sweep the off-spinner in the 15th over and were given Leg-Before Wicket (LBW) by the umpires. Australia, who were already three wickets down for 100, saw half their side back in the hut after Ashwin's over. Have a look at the wickets here:

The offie, who was included in the squad for Australia ODIs after Axar Patel got injured in the Asia Cup, took three wickets in the second ODI after taking one in the Mohali game. While Ashwin hasn't been able to bat yet in two ODIs, thanks to some dominant batting displays by India batters, he sure showed skills as a bowler. He also took two wickets in one over in Indore, dismissing both David Warner and Josh Inglis, to derail Australia's chase. India crush Australia by 99 runs in record-setting Indore tie, win ODI series

India have given a call-up to veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the ODI squad for the upcoming Australia ODI series ahead of the ODI World Cup. The call comes as Axar Patel, India's third spinner apart from Kuldeep Yadav and Ravindra Jadeja in the World Cup squad, suffered an injury. Patel got injured in the final Super Four game against Bangladesh in the recently-concluded Asia Cup.

Speaking on India's squad, Sri Lanka's World Cup-winning captain Arjuna Ranatunga, in a conversation with the Indian Express, said that not having a strong group of spinners would be a disadvantage for India in the upcoming quadrennial event.

"I don't know whether India has two proper spinners. They have good all-rounders, who happen to be spinners but I can't see a proper spinner in this side. On Indian pitches, they need a strong group of spinners. If not, it would be a disadvantage for India," Ranatunga said.

"Of course, there is Kuldeep Yadav, he can be a match-winner as he showed against Pakistan and Sri Lanka in the Asia Cup. He is pretty clever from what I see, especially when it comes to using the variations. But you need one more to support him who could contain and attack because teams will try to target him and unsettle. Especially when you play against England, Australia, South Africa, New Zealand, sometimes you might have to play 3 spinners without affecting the balance of the team. And India doesn’t have a batsman who can bowl. Jadeja who bowls, bats at No 7," he added.

Ranatunga also backs Ashwin's inclusion in the squad as he could be a match-winner whenever he plays for India.

"You take Pakistan and England, they have proper spinners. So that is something I’m sure India will address before the World Cup. They are looking more at the all-rounders like Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel, but I personally feel that they should have someone like R Ashwin in the squad, if not in the XI. When he plays, he can be a match-winner for you," said the former Sri Lanka captain.

After the three-match ODI series against Australia which starts September 22, India will play two warm-up games ahead of the ODI World Cup, which begins on October 5 next month.

'He can be a match-winner,' ex-SL skipper Arjuna Ranatunga backs Ravi Ashwin to be in India's World Cup squad

With ICC ODI World Cup 2023 just days out from the start, India suffered a huge blow with all-rounder Axar Patel getting injured in the last Super Four match against Bangladesh. Axar, who hit 42 in the match and almost took India home, has been replaced by Washington Sundar in India's Playing XI for the Asia Cup final.

The left-arm spinner has 'left quadriceps strain sustained during India's Super Four match against Bangladesh on Friday,' said Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) in a release while giving update about him. While Indian opener Shubman Gill said that Axar's injury is not serious, veteran spinner Ravichandra Ashwin also made a comment.

“I have been playing for the last 14-15 years for Team India. I have had my great moments. I have had my fair share of failures too. But I have tattooed Indian cricket close to my heart. If they require my service even tomorrow, I will be ready and will give my 100 per cent,” said Ashwin during a conversation on his YouTube channel.

India have two more spinners in World Cup squad in Ravindra Jadeja and Kuldeep Yadav. While announcing the squad, chief selector Ajit Agarkar had said that they wanted a off-spinner in the team and hence Yuzvendra Chahal couldn't make the cut. With Axar now injured, there's an outside chance that Ashwin might get considered for the World Cup

There's, however, enough time for Axar before the World Cup actually starts on October 5. India, who are playing Sri Lanka in Asia Cup final on September 17, are also scheduled to play Australia in a three-match ODI series which starts on September 22. After that India will play two warm-up games as well before starting their World Cup campaign on October 8 against Australia.

Veteran off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin on India's ODI World Cup chances after Axar Patel injury

The Indian Cricket Team is deprived of left-handed batters in the middle order, with Ravindra Jadeja – at number seven, as the only sure starter. Southpaw Tilak Varma, who is making the right noises as things stand in the ongoing Caribbean white-ball series, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin feels his inclusion, even as a backup in the World Cup 2023 squad, will be a plus for the home team.

As the selection committee will soon name the preliminary squad for the marquee event, starting on October 5 in Ahmedabad, Tilak, as Ashwin feels, will remain in contention. While the onus will be on unfit Shreyas Iyer and KL Rahul to take up the number four and five slots respectively, in the worst-case scenario (considering both are injured and unavailable), having Tilak alongside Sanju Samson and even Suryakumar Yadav as backups will not hurt India.

Speaking his heart out on his YouTube channel, Ashwin said knowing how well the left-handers can take down the spinners in the middle overs, with Tilak around, India can utilise his talent and put pressure on big teams like Australia and England.

"This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don't have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs."

"But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu (Ravindra Jadeja) is the only left-handed batter in the top 7," Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

"And look at the spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So, most teams don't have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial," Ashwin added.

Tilak’s run in the Caribbean is turning heads

So far, in three outings, Tilak has a fifty to his name and an unbeaten 49, with the latter coming during India’s latest win in the 3rd T20I. His attacking approach has kept him on everyone’s radar, with selectors also keeping a keen eye on him.

Ashwin feels the way Tilak began his career, he made everyone aware of his presence, admitting there is no harm in going ahead with the 20-year-old as India chases first ICC trophy since 2013.

"It is still early, but will they see him as an option? He has at least made everyone notice him. He is surely in the contingency plan. Because any selector who would have seen that knock would have gone, 'Woah!'" Ashwin said.

World Cup 2023: Left-handed Tilak Varma could be a plus in middle order, feels Ravi Ashwin

Ace Indian spinner Ravichandran Ashwin does not regret not being part of India’s plans for the upcoming Cricket World Cup 2023, starting October 5. A Test veteran Ashwin last featured for India in an ODI in January 2022, and with selectors almost confirming the provisional squad for the two mega events – Asia Cup and CWC 2023, chances of him getting a final run in this format look bleak.

From 2011 to 2017, Ashwin featured in almost all major ICC events for India, but following a mediocre run in the 2017 Champions Trophy Final, selectors overlooked him. Though he returned to play the previous two T20 World Cups in the UAE and Australia, respectively, selectors didn’t seem too impressed with his white-ball credentials, and as a result, he remained out of the scheme.

Speaking with Times of India (TOI), Ashwin said he has no regrets about not being in the core plans for the World Cup later this year and that he has stopped thinking about it in the first place. Explaining he is in a happy space in terms of his life and where his cricket career stands, Ashwin said he stopped thinking about things that were not in his hand.

"I don't think like that, because the selection of the team is not my job. I had decided long back that I would not think about stuff that is not in my hand. I am honestly in a very good space in terms of life and my cricket and I try to keep negativity away from my thought process," Ashwin told TOI.

Ashwin added he is not likely to be around for the marquee event, but India’s most successful off-spinner in Tests still wishes to see the home lift trophy.

"I live for the day, and I have no unfinished business. But it's true that I would love to see India winning the World Cup again, even if I am not playing," Ashwin added.

BCCI set to name Asia Cup squad on August 21

ALSO READ: He can play all formats, his basics are so correct: Kiran More on ‘future India captain’ Ruturaj Gaikwad Speaking with Times of India (TOI), Ashwin said he has no regrets about not being in the core plans for the World Cup later this year and that he has stopped thinking about it in the first place. I don't think about selection, I am in good space in my life: Ravi Ashwin on not being in India's plan for CWC

India's latest batting sensation Tilak Varma has made heads turn with two crucial knocks in his first two T20I matches during the ongoing series against West Indies. The Southpaw top-scored in both games for India as other batsmen failed. Varma scored 39 off 22 in the 1st T20I before hitting his maiden fifty (51 off 41) in the second one. India, however, lost both games and are currently trailing 0-2 in the five-match series.

India's veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin thinks that Varma could be a backup for Men in Blue at the upcoming ICC ODI World Cup. Ashwin, speaking on his YouTube channel, also compared Varma's batting, especially the pull shot, to Aussies.

“The emergence of Tilak Varma has made everyone take notice of him. He looked in imperious touch even on that slow pitch in 1st T20I. His batting style is very unlike for an Indian making his international debut. His game resembles a lot like Rohit Sharma. He sweats on the pull shot. Generally, India batters won’t set up to play the pull shot. It is something they develop later. But his game looks like he has a natural pull shot and sends the ball outside the rope like an Aussie batter,” Ashwin said.

“This is neck-and-neck with respect to the World Cup. So, will they think about Tilak Varma as an option if we don’t have enough backups? Because Sanju Samson has performed really well in ODIs. But the exciting part about Tilak Varma is that he is a left-hander and Team India is lacking left-handers. Jaddu is the only left-handed batter in the top 7. And look at the off-spinners from all the top teams. Australia have Ashton Agar. England have Moeen Ali and a leggie in Adil Rashid. So most teams don’t have a finger spinner to challenge the left-handed batters. That is why the emergence of Tilak is crucial,” he added.

With less than 60 days to go for the World Cup and a cloud of uncertainty over players, namely Shreyas Iyer, KL Rahul and Rishabh Pant, Varma surely has emerged as a contender for the backup spot. The lack of form of his contemporaries like Ishan Kishan, Shubman Gill, Sanju Samson and Suryakumar Yadav has also helped his case.

Ravi Ashwin picks Tilak Varma as potential ODI World Cup backup for India

India's ace spinner Ravi Ashwin has shared his views on why Bazball approach won't work in India. The off-spinner was quite honest with his thoughts, saying as soon as results don't come even in two matches, the players who didn't perform will be dropped. Ashwin, however, acknowledged that India will go under transition soon but said that "we can't copy it just because it worked for England."

“We are playing Test cricket very well. But we will go through a transition soon. And things won’t be easy during that phase. There will be a few issues here and there. But let’s assume India adopts Bazball during this phase. Let us assume a player throws his bat at everything like Harry Brook and gets out and we lose two Test matches. What will we do? Will we back Bazball and the players,” asked Ashwin while speaking on his YouTube channel.

“We will drop at least four players from our playing XI. That’s how our culture has always been. We can’t copy others style of play just because it worked for them. It works for them because their management is fully in with this style of play, their selectors back the players to play this way. In fact, even their crowd and Test match watching public are backing the team in this process. But we can’t do this,” added the ace spinner.

India spinner Ravi Ashwin proclaims Bazball won't work because of culture in India

Ravichandran Ashwin snared two wickets for India but the West Indies showed a measure of resistance in reaching 76 for two after being set a daunting victory target of 365 on the fourth day of the second and final Test on Sunday.

A day packed with action at Queen's Park Oval in between short, sharp showers saw Mohammed Siraj scything through the lower half of the home side's first innings in the morning to earn his team a 183-run lead.

Blistering half-centuries by India captain Rohit Sharma and wicketkeeper-batsman Ishan Kishan then facilitated a swift second innings declaration at 181 for two off just 24 overs.

Ashwin, destroyer of the West Indies in the first Test in Dominica with an 11-wicket match haul, removed home skipper Kraigg Brathwaite to a top-edged sweep and then had debutant Kirk McKenzie lbw without scoring.

However the obdurate Tagenarine Chanderpaul, very much in the mould of his celebrated father Shivnarine, stayed to the close with vice-captain Jermaine Blackwood.

A target of 289 more runs on a final day pitch should be a step too far for the Caribbean side, especially given the greater experience, competence and confidence of an Indian side pressing for a 2-0 series sweep at the start of the new World Test Championship cycle.

In humid conditions at the start of the day, Siraj claimed the last four wickets to finish with his best Test figures of five for 60 as the West Indies crashed from an overnight position of 229 for five to 255 all out, their last five wickets tumbling for just 26 runs.

Sharma then led the rush for runs with a 35-ball 50 before lunch.

He eventually fell for 57 while his opening partner Yashasvi Jaiswal was a casualty of a similarly attacking 38 in the three overs which were bowled in the afternoon session.

That was the cue for Kishan to play his natural game and the left-hander did not disappoint, belting an unbeaten 52 off 34 balls with four fours and two sixes embellishing his maiden Test half-century.

"I knew what the team needed from me in a short span of time and the backing of Virat Kohli really relaxed me to play my game," said Kishan at the end of a long final session.

"The important thing tomorrow is execution. We have very good bowlers and senior players who always offer advice, but they aren't in a bad position themselves, so tomorrow is about showing what all our preparation for this series was about."

Debutant pacer Mukesh Kumar, who opened the floodgates for Siraj when he trapped Alick Athanaze leg-before in the first over of the day, was rewarded with a share of the new ball in the second innings.

However Brathwaite and Chanderpaul negotiated that challenge without any real alarms and it was left to the wily Ashwin to effect the breakthrough in the 18th over, making it four dismissals in four innings of the West Indies captain.

Ind vs WI: 'This is just...,' Yashasvi Jaiswal fires warning after blockbuster Test debut

Ravi Ashwin, ranked number one bowler in Tests, has opened up on the dressing room atmosphere in today’s cricket. India’s most successful off-spinner with 474 wickets under his belt, Ashwin was left out of the playing XI against Australia in the WTC Final, a one-off clash that the Aussies won by 209 runs at the Oval in London. That decision was widely criticised.

Having been around the Indian cricket circuit for over 13 years, Ravi Ashwin evolved as a player and has seen a lot of stuff unfolding in Indian cricket in the past decade.

In this fast-moving age of franchise-based T20 Cricket Leagues, with players from every country playing alongside each other, the consensus was that there would be a friendly environment – but that’s not the case.

Ashwin’s latest remarks shed some light into this situation.

ALSO READ: Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara set to return to English County after West Indies tour

Speaking with the Indian Express newspaper in an exclusive chat, Ashwin opened up on how things pan out in the dressing room nowadays.

Elaborating on the competitive culture growing among teammates irrespective of the formats, Ashwin said how, unlike earlier times when teammates were actually friends, it changed now as he feels players playing together are mere colleagues nowadays.

ALSO READ: Ajinkya Rahane, Cheteshwar Pujara set to return to English County after West Indies tour Speaking with the Indian Express newspaper in an exclusive chat, Ashwin opened up on how things pan out in the dressing room nowadays. Elaborating on the competitive culture growing among teammates irrespective of the formats, Ashwin said how, unlike earlier times when teammates were actually friends, it changed now as he feels players playing together are mere colleagues nowadays. “This is an era where everybody is a colleague. 'Teammates are no longer friends', says Ravi Ashwin on dressing room atmosphere

Ravi Ashwin, the number one ranked bowler in Tests, didn't make it to the final XI against Australia in the WTC Final, and it's fair to say it raised a few eyebrows. As India lost its second straight WTC Final, this time by 209 runs, Ashwin's surprise exclusion triggered a debate among fans on social media over BCCI's move to play four seamers and Ravindra Jadeja as the lone spinner.

India's most successful off-spinner in this format, Ashwin, opened up on his exclusion saga, revealing he knew about this decision two days before the start of the WTC Final. In a conversation with the Indian Express and the Hindu, the veteran bowler admitted taking the development as a stumbling block, not a setback.

He further explains that it's not the first time when he missed a crucial game for India, especially in SENA countries. Ashwin didn't feature in the final XI in all five Tests on the previous tour to England in 2021/22, having last played in the UK during the maiden WTC Final against New Zealand in Southampton, where he returned with figures of four for 45 across two innings.

"For me, it's not a setback," Ashwin told the Indian Express and Hindu. "It's just a stumbling block, I'll move on because I have gone through that. When somebody knocks you down for the first time, you have a knee-jerk reaction. I think you should be knocked down once in a while along your life so that you are used to it and will know how to bounce back. That's what life is. Whether you are at your peak or not, it is still a setback. The fact that you need to learn how to deal with it is very important," the veteran spinner added.

'I'd have loved to play...'

Ashwin added he would have loved to play because he contributed towards helping India reach this position. Adding since the past four-five years, his overseas bowling improved by heaps and bounds as he managed to win games for his country.

"I would have loved to play because I have played a part in us getting there. Even in the last final, I got four wickets and bowled really well. Ever since 2018-19, my bowling overseas has been fantastic, and I have managed to win games for the team. I am looking at it as a captain or coach, and I'm just talking in hindsight, in their defence."

"So the last time when we were in England, it was 2-2 with a drawn Test, and they would have felt four pacers and one spinner is the combination in England. That is what they might have thought going into the final. The problem is for a spinner to come into play, it must be the fourth innings. The fourth innings is a very crucial facet, and for us to be able to put that amount of runs so the spinner can come into play, it's completely a mindset thing," Ashwin added.

While he revealed knowing about team management's final decision on the playing XI against Australia, Ashwin admitted being more chill about his things at a bigger front than he used to be.

"I'm a lot more chilled than I used to be. A lot more relaxed in my life than I ever have been. Sitting here today, I realise how much of a toll it had taken on me mentally to the point where I was traumatised. But I am very glad to have come through that and discovered a new me," Ashwin said.

Ravi Ashwin reacts at India's loss in WTC Final after being dropped from playing XI

India once again came up short of winning the WTC Final as they lost by 209 runs against Australia on day 5 of the ultimate Test in London. Rohit Sharma had won the toss on day 1 but nothing went India's way after that. This was India's second consecutive loss in the WTC Final.

While Australia batted beautifully after losing two wickets in the first session of the opening day, it was India's playing XI that raised eyebrows among cricket experts and fans. Notably, India had left out off-spinner Ravi Ashwin out of the XI, a move which skipper Sharma had defined as tough but needed for the team.

Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar, after India's loss, also questioned the move in a tweet and said that he failed to understand Ashwin's exclusion.

While the debate could go on for days, India's other bowlers didn't show the needed discipline in Australia's innings as they allowed the Kangaroos to pile up 469 runs. Coach Rahul Dravid also lamented that same.

"It wasn't a 469 wicket," Dravid said. "On the first day, last session, conceding 157 [for no wicket] was disappointing. We knew the lines and lengths we needed to bowl; the lengths weren't bad, but we went wide with our lines, gave a lot of room to Travis Head, he capitalised, and we fell behind,” Dravid said after the loss.
Sachin questions Ashwin's exclusion after loss Former India batsman Sachin Tendulkar, after India's loss, also questioned the move in a tweet and said that he failed to understand Ashwin's exclusion. WTC Final: Sachin Tendulkar questions dropping Ravi Ashwin from playing XI after India's loss

With each passing day, the excitement around the World Test Championship Final between India and Australia is rising. While fans, commentators, and everyone else have their predicted XIs ready for the one-off Test, former Australia captain Ricky Ponting has also shared his take on an important selection call for India – who should they go ahead with, Ravi Ashwin or Ravindra Jadeja?

Given the match is taking place at the Oval in London, the venue that traditionally supports batters and assists spinners at some point later in the game, India might opt to go ahead with both spin-bowling all-rounders. With two seamers, Jaydev Unadkat and Umesh Yadav yet to attain full fitness, India might contemplate playing Shardul Thakur as the third seamer.

ALSO READ: 'X-factor' Ishan Kishan can put Australia under pressure in WTC Final, says Ricky Ponting

As quoted by ESPNcricinfo, Ponting said Jadeja - the batter, has improved a lot over the years and can take up the number six spot, while Ashwin, as labelled by him as the more skilled bowler, will start in the XI too.

"I think they will pick Jadeja and Ashwin because Jadeja can hold that No. 6 batting spot," Ponting said while picking whom the two shall be named in the XI.

"His batting has improved that much that they can pick him as a batter now that might just bowl a few overs if required. There is no doubt that Ashwin is a more skilled and better Test bowler than Jadeja is, but if Jadeja can hold down that batting spot and then as the game goes on, getting into the fourth and fifth day if it does start to turn, then you have got that really high-class second spin bowling option if required,” Punter added.

Rahane better suited to Test format – Ponting

Following a stellar start to IPL 2023 for Chennai Super Kings, Test veteran Ajinkya Rahane got recalled to the side for the WTC Final. Shedding some thoughts on his return after nearly two years, Ponting said this format suits Rahane's style more, and since he is coming with some confidence on his back, the right-hand batter will play a crucial role in helping India end the ICC trophy drought.

"Jinks (Rahane) has had an incredible IPL as well. It's funny, isn't it, how IPL runs can now get you picked back into a Test match squad. Jinks has been on the outer for the last couple of years in Test cricket, but everyone saw how confident he looked and how well he played in the IPL, and that was enough to get him back in,” Ponting further said.

Ricky added saying, "He has been there and done it before in Test cricket. It was probably a bigger hurdle for him to climb to get back into playing really good T20 cricket than it is for him to go back and play good Test cricket. His make-up is much more suited to the Test game than it is to T20 cricket. He has rediscovered some confidence, and if he does get picked, I won't be surprised to see him get runs in that Test match.

"He has always been a really high-quality player, and we saw him even with his leadership qualities here in Australia, in that last series to turn things around," the former Aussie captain said.

WTC Final: Should India play both Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja? Ex-Aussie captain shares his take

Rajasthan Royals opener Yashasvi Jaiswal played a huge role in his team win against struggling Delhi Capitals on April 8 as he hit five fours in the first over of the match itself.

Jaiswal started with pulling the first ball from Khaleel Ahmed for four before a misfield on a cut shot gave him the second boundary on the second ball. The southpaw completed the hat-trick with an exquisite drive on the off-side off the third ball. The fourth ball of the over was dot but Jaiswal hit two more fours on the last two balls to take 20 off the first over.

The over set the tone for RR as they scored 199/4 in their 20 overs, which proved too much for DC to chase down. Royals spinner, Ravi Ashwin, in a video shared by the IPL's twitter handle, interviewed Jaiswal about his innings after the match.

Ashwin, however, got cheeky and asked Jaiswal to spoke about the over which went for 444 runs. As soon as Jaiswal started speaking, Ashwin sheepishly asked again 444 runs? To which Jaiswal replied, "I don't know. I was seeing the ball clearly and I thought I should go for it."

Ashwin further asked, 'I see a lot of confidence in your batting, does it have something to do with your year with the red-ball?' Jaiswal responded positively to that, saying, "yes, I think 100 percent because I played a lot of red-ball cricket the whole year and I was able to control my emotions a lot."

IPL 2023: RR's Ravi Ashwin interviews Yashasvi Jaiswal about hitting five fours in an over vs DC - WATCH

Known to be an observer of the game like none other, ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin explained how Steve Smith and Ashton Agar plotted Virat Kohli’s dismissal in the final ODI in Chennai. Chasing 270, India got reduced to 77 for two when Kohli and KL Rahul started building a partnership. When Kohli crossed his fifty, he fell prey to the ploy laid by the stand-in Aussie captain and left-arm spinner Agar, chipping one straight to the long-off area.

Speaking on his YouTube Channel, Ashwin, who had earlier tweeted praising Smith’s captaincy following the end of the match, explained how Steve while standing in the slips, helped Agar get the big scalp in Kohli.

Returning to the dismissal, Ashwin said he heard Smith constantly telling Agar to bowl outside the off-stump area. Explaining how that led to Kohli’s wicket, Ashwin said if the ball holds its line while the batter tries to play it over the extra-cover region, it will go straight to long-off, which creates a higher chance of a wicket falling and eventually, that only happened.

The India international also commented on how Kohli rediscovering his form might help India in the World Cup later this year. Ashwin said Kohli is peaking again at the right time, and while he failed to convert his fifties into daddy hundreds like he used to do before, the former India captain might unleash him at the bigger stage.

The Border-Gavaskar series ended after a dull day of Test cricket in Ahmedabad on the final day of the final Test and India took the series 2-1.
The Indian skipper, however, ensured a moment of laugh for everyone on the ground and those watching from home as he tossed the ball up to opening batsman Shubman Gill and modern-day 'The Wall' Cheteshwar Pujara. Job chod du? 😂 pic.twitter.com/R0mJqnALJ6 — Ashwin 🇮🇳 (@ashwinravi99) March 13, 2023 × Ashwin's comment was inspired by a very popular social-media with the same caption that had been viral for a long time in the past. Pujara also replied to Ashwin in the same manner with the following tweet: Nahi. This was just to say thank you for going 1 down in Nagpur 😂 https://t.co/VbE92u6SXz — Cheteshwar Pujara (@cheteshwar1) March 13, 2023 × India, however, won the series in the end with Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja being two most prolific bowlers for them. Talking about the batsmen, Cheteshwar Pujara, who played his 100th Test for India in Delhi, had a quiet series as he managed just 140 runs in six innings at an average of 28 with one fifty-plus score. Shubman Gill, who came as a replacement of KL Rahul for the last two Tests, scored 154 runs in three innings at an average of 51.33, including a century in the final Test. It was his 128 in the final Test that helped India post a total of 571/9 in first innings in Ahmedabad.

The end of the fifth day at the Narendra Modi stadium in Ahmedabad put curtains down on the marquee 2023 Border-Gavaskar series with India winning it (2-1) for the fourth straight time. Continuing their dominance at home the Indian spinners fared the best not only with the ball but also with the bat in hand. In this piece we will look at the top five players from the recently-concluded India vs Australia series.

Ravindra Jadeja

It’s not easy being Ravindran Jadeja. From remaining out of cricket for more than five months to winning the Player of the Series award for an all-round show upon returning to the side straightaway, only Jadeja could have done it.

The left-arm maestro picked 22 wickets and scored 135 runs across four Tests to remain on top of the all-rounder's chart in the ICC rankings.

In his first game since August 2022, Jadeja returned with a five-for in the first innings in Nagpur. He mounted pressure on Australia with a fighting 70 in the first innings before picking up two more wickets in the second innings to help India win the Test by an inning and 132 runs.

His best performance, however, came in the following Test in Delhi where he picked his career-best figures of seven for 42 in the second innings, finishing with match figures of ten for 110, bagging yet another player of the match award.

Axar Patel

If there was an award for the game-changing inning in a Test, Axar would have won it not once, not twice but thrice, and that too for his batting and not bowling. India’s best player in this Border-Gavaskar series, Axar Patel impressed everyone with his batting display.

Rather known and ranked as a specialised spinner, what Axar achieved with the bat in hand even promoted the Aussies to take a leaf out of his book.

In Nagpur Axar scored a counter-attacking 84, whereas, in Delhi the left-handed batter completed yet another fifty, hitting 74 in the first innings. After a rare failure in the Indore Test, Axar returned with a 113-ball 79 in India’s first innings in the final Test. What’s exciting about these fifties – Axar scored the majority of these runs while India was struggling to put up runs on the board.

Meanwhile, given these scores, Axar was not only India’s second-best batter in the series in terms of runs scored but was also the third-highest run-scorer (264 runs at an average of 88) after Usman Khawaja and Virat Kohli. He didn’t fare any well in bowling though picking up just three wickets.

Ravichandran Ashwin

There cannot be a discussion of the best players in a series in India without mentioning Ravi Ashwin’s name. The veteran spinner, for the nth time in his Test career, had an impactful series with the ball in hand.

The off-spin legend was again the thorn in the flesh of the Aussies as he won the Player of the Series award alongside Jadeja for picking up the most wickets (25) this time.

Throughout the series, Ashwin remained on the top of Australia and while he troubled them big time on the rank-turners in the first three Tests, he left an impression with a six-wicket haul in the final Test in Ahmedabad where the pitch refused to assist the spinners.

Nathan Lyon

Called the best overseas spinner to have travelled to India in a very long time by the India captain Rohit Sharma, Nathan Lyon delivered what was expected out of him.

Equalled with Jadeja in the wickets tally (22) in this series, Lyon, following a rusty start in the first match, tore into India’s middle-order in the Indore Test with his second eight-wicket haul in an inning in India.

Despite being India's nemesis, even in Australia, Lyon got good support from the newcomers in Todd Murphy and Matthew Kuhnemann throughout the series as they returned with 14 and nine wickets, respectively. Meanwhile, with 116 wickets In the Border-Gavaskar series and 482 in Tests, Lyon stays ahead of India’s Ashwin on both lists.

Usman Khawaja

After warming benches during his previous two India tours, the left-handed Usman Khawaja finally got his turn this time, and he made the most of his chance. In a team full of batting superstars, Usman came good after early jitters in the first Test and remained on top by scoring the most runs among all batters.

While Ashwin had his number on most of the occasions, Khawaja shined on two separate instances – one during the first innings in Delhi, where he scored a fighting 81 and then during the final Test in Ahmedabad, where he registered his maiden hundred on the Indian soil, hitting an incredible 180.

In the latest ICC rankings released on Wednesday, England’s James Anderson returned to attaining the number one spot in the bowler’s category, ending Australian Pat Cummins’ four-year run at the top of the chart. Following his seven-wicket haul against New Zealand in the first Test on his maiden visit to Mount Maunganui last week, Anderson, aged 40, claimed the top position for the sixth time in his career, and for the first time since 2018. While he has 866 rating points besides his name on the rankings, India’s ace-spinner Ravi Ashwin is second on the list with 864 points while Cummins dropped two places down to the third place with 858 rating points.

Having made his Test debut literally almost two decades back in 2003, Anderson is currently the third-highest wicket-taker in Tests with 682 scalps to his name. In case if Sri Lanka are able to pull the rug under the Kiwis, India would be out of contention, however, one more win in the series will make India independent of Sri Lanka - New Zealand series. Twitter can't keep calm as India decimate Australia in second Test in Delhi

Following handsome performances in the first Test against Australia in Nagpur, India’s star duo of Ravi Ashwin and Ravindra Jadeja attained top spots in the latest ICC Rankings released on Wednesday. While Ashwin climbed to the second spot in the bowlers list with 846 rating points to his name, his fellow partner Ravindra Jadeja jumped 16 places to claim the number one place in the all-rounders category with 424 rating points; Ashwin is second on that list with 358 points. Both these match-winners picked up five-wicket hauls in the first Test, helping India beat Australia by an innings and 132 runs, and take a 1-0 lead in the Border-Gavaskar series.

While returning Ravindra Jadeja picked a five-for in the first outing in addition to scoring a fighting 70 in India’s only innings, ace spinner Ravi Ashwin spun his web around the Aussies batters by picking his 31st five-wicket haul in the second innings. Jadeja also picked two wickets in the second innings including the big one of number one Test batter Marnus Labuschagne, and returned with the Player of the Match award for his all-round show.

Another spin-bowling all-rounder Axar Patel also rose six places to the seventh spot after a masterful 84, that helped India gain a huge lead on day three. On the other hand, Jasprit Bumrah, who is out due to a stress fracture in his back and hasn’t played any competitive cricket in a long time, is placed 5th in the bowlers list.

India captain Rohit Sharma, who scored a hundred (120) in the first innings jumped two places to the eighth position with 748 rating points. Also, Rishabh Pant, who suffered a road accident in December last year, is at the fifth spot with 789 points.

Talking about the Aussie players, both openers David Warner and Usman Khawaja faced the wrath of playing poor across both innings as Warner’s cheap scores of 1 and 10 saw him slip six places to the 20th spot, while his in-form partner Usman Khawaja, who too failed badly against spin in the Nagpur Test, drops down two places to tenth position.

Whereas, star middle-order batters Marnus and former captain Steve Smith are ranked one and two in the batters list, respectively, with Pakistan captain Babar taking the third spot. Virat Kohli, who got out cheaply on 12 in the first innings, is placed 16th.

The second of the four-match Test series will begin on February 17th in Delhi.

ICC Rankings: Jadeja jumps 16 places to bag top position in all-rounders list, bowler Ashwin retains 2nd spot

India beat Australia by an innings and 132 runs on day three of the first Border-Gavaskar series Test in Nagpur. Five wickets to ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin in the second innings helped India wrap Australia on 91 in almost one session and gave the hosts a 1-0 lead in the four-match Test series. Returning star all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja starred with both bat and ball as he scored 70 runs in the first innings and picked up seven wickets across two outings. Axar Patel also impressed with an incredible 84 while captain Rohit Sharma entered record books with a hundred to his name as well.

Australia won the toss and elected to bat first on the pitch that was criticised for being doctored. They didn’t get off to a great start losing both their openers inside the first three overs. Marnus Labuschagne and former captain Steve Smith then stitched a partnership and kept the game in the control until lunch on day one. The second session went India’s way as returning Ravindra Jadeja picked up three wickets including that of Marnus and Smith.

Little contributions from Peter Handscomb and keeper-batter Alex Carey did help the cause but couldn’t trouble India for longer. Jadeja returned with a five-for while Ashwin picked three as Australia’s first innings got folded on a mere 177.

Rohit and KL Rahul had India in command before debutant Todd Murphy picked Rahul as his maiden Test wicket just on the stroke of stumps as India ended day one on 77 for one. The first session on day two saw Rohit completing his fifty while Ravi Ashwin played a handy knock of 23 as well. Wickets then fell on regular intervals as India at one stage was 168 for five with Rohit and Jadeja at the crease.

With his first Border-Gavaskar hundred in India, Rohit became the first Indian captain to score centuries in all three formats. After he got cleaned bowled by Pat Cummins on 120, Axar and Jadeja began the rescue act. With respective fifties, both helped India take a lead of over 200. On day three, India’s first innings got ended on 400 with Todd Murphy picking up seven wickets to his name on his Test debut.

Australia’s second innings was never going to be easy and as it happened, they were down and out in no time. Veteran spinner Ashwin came into play from his first over when he picked up Usman Khawaja on five. It was about time before he picked up yet another five-for to his name and put Australia on the mat. Though Steve Smith showed his class by playing some classy shots, he just couldn’t save his team from facing a heavy defeat.

This loss will haunt the Aussies who had earlier decided to not play a practice game ahead of the Border-Gavaskar series. The next Test will be played in New Delhi from February 17th.

IND vs AUS, 1st Test: Twitter erupts in joy as India decimate Australia in Nagpur

Much before the start of the marquee Border-Gavaskar series, there was a lot of talk about how the Australians are preparing to play against Ravichandran Ashwin. So much so that they even got an Ashwin-alike bowler on board to bowl to them in nets ahead of the Nagpur Test. Though all that looked like working a bit in their favour in the first innings, come the second innings, all those efforts went straight into the drain as the ace Indian spinner picked a five-for in his first ten-over spell to hand Aussies an innings defeat. Trapping four out of the five players right in the middle showed how controlled he was with his line and length.

Speaking after the match, Ashwin, who picked his 31st five-wicket haul in Tests, credited the batters for laying a foundation of a big win on Saturday. After Rohit Sharma’s heroics on day two, it was a handy partnership between Ravindra Jadeja and Axar Patel that actually helped India take a more than 200-run lead in the first innings. As the Indian batters made the already-weakened Aussie bowling line-up grind hard for each wicket, Ashwin feels that worked in their favour.

“You know how things work from the third day onwards here in Test matches. I'd credit the batting unit; they really dug deep and kept them on the field for a long while. It's going to be tough for the team coming out and bat. The early wickets really set the tone today,” Ashwin said after the first Test in Nagpur.

Heaping praises on his fellow partner Ravindra Jadeja, who made a stunning return to the Indian team after a gap of five months, Ashwin said Jaddu (as Jadeja’s teammate often call him) was in exceptional form and the way he batted and bowled, he made all the difference. For scoring 70 runs in India’s only innings and for picking seven wickets across two outings, the left-armer Jadeja was adjudged the Player of the Match.

“He's (Ravindra Jadeja) been in phenomenal form. The way he's batted, the way he's bowled and we don't have to talk about how well he moves in the field. He's been a fantastic cricketer. I'm so thankful for the fact that I've got a partner like him to be bowling alongside me and Axar is no ordinary bowler either.
