India recover from poor start

While Ashwin-Jadeja came in handy for Team India, it was a poor start for Rohit Sharma’s men, after India lost the toss. Interestingly, Bangladesh became the first team since 1982 to win the toss and choose to bowl in Chennai. Skipper Rohit (6) was dismissed after a poor start, while Shubman Gill followed him as he went without troubling the scorers. Former skipper Virat Kohli was also out of ideas when he was dismissed for 6.

Rishabh Pant and KL Rahul then contributed 39 and 16 respectively, before Bangladesh struck again. Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers with four wickets, while Nahid Rana and Mehidy Hasan Miraz also bagged a wicket each.

IND vs BAN, 1st Test: Ravi Ashwin scores 50 at 'happy hunting ground' Chepauk as India stage comeback

India spinner Ravi Ashwin has revealed that he has not yet thought about retirement, but he's taking it one day at a time. The comments come ahead of the start of first Test against Bangladesh, which begins on September 19 at his home ground in Chennai.

The 37-year-old has been spearheading India's spin department for over a decade now and has bagged more than 500 wickets in Test cricket.

"There is nothing like that in my mind. I am only thinking about one day at a time because when you get older, you have to put in extra effort every single day. It's not the same. I have put in a lot of effort in the last 3-4 years," Ashwin said while speaking on Vimal Kumar's YouTube podcast.

On a lighter note, the ace off-spinner also shared one record he'd like to have under his name.

India last lost to Australia in a Test series in 2014, which was played in Australia. Since then, India have won all four series played between the two countries, two in India and two in Australia.

'I will leave...,' India spinner Ravi Ashwin offers retirement update ahead of upcoming Test season

Ace spinner Ravi Ashwin has labelled India’s premier bowler, Jasprit Bumrah, the ‘most valuable Indian cricketer’ right now. Ashwin said Bumrah deserves all the praise and that the fans should celebrate him more. Chennai-born Ashwin also reflected on how the city loves treating bowlers, with Bumrah receiving a mighty ‘Rajni style’ welcome during an event he attended here recently.

“We Chennai people appreciate bowlers a lot. He was here for an event as a chief guest 4-5 days ago. We gave him a Rajni treatment. We (Chennai people) treat bowlers very nicely. He should be treated as a champion. I don’t want to name, but Jasprit Bumrah is the most valuable Indian cricketer right now," Ashwin said while speaking with Vimal Kumar on his YouTube channel.

Bumrah broke onto the international scene in 2016 and has been on a steep rise since. The opening bowler made a name for himself for bowling ‘pinpoint Yorkers’, but soon after, he showed the world that he’s more than that. More so for his unplayable spells with both the new and the old ball, Bumrah is a threat even for the best batters around.

Meanwhile, Bumrah was instrumental in helping India taste success across formats since his debut and played a handy role in ending India’s trophy drought with his maiden ICC title (T20 World Cup in the Americas in June this year).

He won the Player of the Tournament award for his 15 wickets in eight games, including picking two crucial ones against South Africa in the final.

‘It will never change’

Known to put up an honest yet brave face in the media, Ashwin said India will continue to remain a batsman-dominated country, but he is happy for Bumrah, who garnered as much attention and importance as batters in the Indian Team.

Calling Bumrah a ‘once-in-a-generation’ bowler, Ashwin said, “India has always been the country that is a batsman-dominated country, and it’s never going to change. But I am so glad and happy that we are celebrating Jasprit Bumrah. Jasprit Bumrah is a once-in-a-generation bowler. We should celebrate him even more.”

Ravi Ashwin labels Jasprit Bumrah ‘most valuable Indian cricketer’, says 'he should be celebrated more'

India and Rajasthan Royals ace spinner Ravi Ashwin feels the bowlers will soon need a mental boost if batters continue to smash them with utter disdain like they are doing in IPL 2024.

India and Rajasthan Royals ace spinner Ravi Ashwin feels the bowlers will soon need a mental boost if batters continue to smash them with utter disdain like they are doing in IPL 2024. Punjab Kings completed the highest successful run-chase in all T20s – hunting 262 against Kolkata Knight Riders this season, with teams posting 250-plus for fun. Such scores have made a mockery of even the best bowling attacks. Teams like SunRisers Hyderabad broke the record of IPL’s highest team total twice this season, with the latest one coming against Royal Challengers Bengaluru – 287 for three. Speaking on these lines, Ashwin said the stadiums built back in the day have started to look smaller in front of the modern-day T20 hitting, where batters are fearless and take the attack to the opposition from ball one. "The stadiums built back in the day are not relevant in the modern day. The bats that were used back then were also used for gully cricket. With LED boards of the sponsors being used, the boundary has come in by 10 yards," Ashwin said during a promotional event. "It is tilting too far on the other side, which will make someone's misery your great time. Bowlers will need a mental boost," he continued. Bond seconds with Ashwin Shane Bond, RR’s bowling coach, seconds with Ravi Ashwin on this, saying batters have come far, and with the help of modern-day hitting, they have become stars and make huge money. However, for the bowlers, only those who manage to do well across all formats, with only a handful left, are playing the catching-up game. "For bowlers now, if you can bowl well, you can make a lot of money. Batting has evolved, and bowling is catching up," Shane Bond said. Meanwhile, Ashwin is having a torrid run this season, having picked just two wickets in nine contested matches, going at nine runs per over. Although his numbers look poor on paper, his team sits at the top of the points table, with eight wins from 10 games. RR has 16 points, needing just one win in their remaining four matches to seal the playoff spot. Their next game is against Delhi Capitals on Tuesday (May 7) in Delhi.

IPL 2024: Ravi Ashwin seeks respite for bowlers, says modern-day hitting is making stadiums look smaller

Rajasthan Royals spinner Ravi Ashwin has lambasted the fans for booing Mumbai Indians' newly-appointed skipper Hardik Pandya. Notably, the fans in the stadium have been ruthless to Pandya after he replaced Rohit as Mumbai skipper ahead of the ongoing Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 season. MI have played their two games in Ahmedabad & Hyderabad and fans at both places have booed Pandya mercilessly.

“Have you seen this happen in any other country? Have you seen Joe Root and Zak Crawley fans fight? Or have you seen Joe Root and Jos Buttler fans fight? It’s crazy. Have you seen Steve Smith and Pat Cummins fans fight in Australia?” said Ashwin while criticising the incidents.

Against Gujarat, Pandya's previous team, Mumbai failed to chase a modest total of 169 runs while against SRH they fell short of 31 runs in a record chase of 278. Pandya was criticised heavily for scoring 24 off 20 balls against SRH.

IPL 2024: Ravi Ashwin lambasts fans for booing Mumbai Indians skipper Hardik Pandya

IPL 2024: India veteran spinner Ravi Ashwin has said that he's indebted to former India skipper MS Dhoni for giving him the opportunity in the Indian Premier League (IPL). Notably, Ashwin was a key member of Dhoni-led Chennai Super Kings (CSK) for many years before moving out and joining Rajasthan Royals.

"In 2008, I met all the greats (in CSK dressing room) Mathew Hayden and MS Dhoni. I sat through (IPL) 2008. I was a nobody then, where am I to play in a team that had Muttiah Muralitharan,” said Ashwin at a Tamil Nadu Cricket Association (TNCA) event. The state association had facilitated Ashwin for his achievements for India including reaching 500 Test wickets in the recent series against England.

IPL 2024: Ravi Ashwin 'indebted' to CSK skipper MS Dhoni for 'new ball opportunity' in IPL

Ace India spinner and modern-day great Ravi Ashwin recently became the second Indian after the legendary Anil Kumble to complete 500 or more wickets in Tests. The lanky spinner achieved this feat during the five-match Test series against England at home, which India won 4-1. Ashwin also played his 100th Test (fifth Test in Dharamsala) and picked 26 wickets in the series.

Hailing his team’s premier bowler, head coach Rahul Dravid lauded Ashwin for challenging him as the coach, something Dravid admires sitting in the top position in Indian cricket.

Dravid also acknowledged Ashwin’s hunger for wickets while complimenting him for the team player that he is.

“He always has the desire to contribute to the team’s success. Have enjoyed my time with him,” Dravid said.

Although there are no speculations of Ashwin taking retirement as things stand, Dravid said the Indian spinner must stick around and continue carrying the legacy for the longest he can.

”I hope he is not finished. He has moved the craft of spin bowling through his hard work, dedication and innovation. That’s a great legacy to have. Fantastic! Well done and inspired a whole generation of young spinners,” Dravid said of Ashwin.

Upon breaching the 500-wicket mark in Tests, Ashwin entered the elite of cricketers with similar records to their name.

Among all the 22 players (bowlers and all-rounders) who have played as many matches and picked over 100 Test wickets, only Sri Lanka great Muttiah Muralitharan (584) had more wickets than Ashwin (509) heading into their 100th match.

Besides, Ashwin’s Test strike rate (51.3) is the best among all players in their 99 Tests and is best among all spinners, 40 included, who have picked at least 150 wickets.

Meanwhile, Ashwin will play for Rajasthan Royals in the upcoming edition of the Indian Premier League starting March 22 in Chennai. Rajasthan will host Uttar Pradesh in their opening game on Sunday (March 24).

‘I hope he is not finished’ – Rahul Dravid on ‘team man’ Ravi Ashwin carrying on with his legacy

Bazball has gone for a toss following England’s 1-4 series loss at the hands of India in away conditions. Captain Ben Stokes and his touring English side won the first Test in Hyderabad but lost the remaining four matches to surrender the five-match series, leading everyone to question their ultra-attacking approach. Ravi Ashwin, India’s protagonist in their massive win, shared his thoughts on why a process that he thinks has a future failed in India this time.

From playing his 100th Test (in Dharamsala) to picking his 500th Test wicket (becoming the second Indian after Kumble), Ashwin achieved several records during the home series against England. Speaking on his YouTube channel, Ashwin addressed the reasons behind why Bazball failed in India.

The ace spinner admitted that though England’s newest approach put India under tremendous pressure throughout the series, the Indian Team maintaining the right balance helped them cross the line on four out of five occasions.

“So many people have commented that they lost 1-4, but in my opinion, we really came under immense pressure in the series. If the team manages to get the right balance, it is bound for success,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

Citing the example of Zak Crawley’s dismissal in the first innings of the final Test (in Dharamsala), Ashwin explained where England went wrong in their approach and how it affected their game and result.

“Kuldeep’s Zak Crawley dismissal was a beauty. He had hit a boundary between covers and mid-off just on over back. So he was in good flow. The gap still existed as bait for him. He tried again, got cramped, and the ball passed between his gates. He had already hit four-five boundaries. It’s not that we bowled fuller suddenly.

“When such a high-risk shot is played, he loses his wicket. Crawley’s scores in the 60s and 70s are pearls that missed becoming a hundred because of his high-risk cricket,” Ashwin, who picked nine wickets in the last Test, said.

England missed a chance

Seemingly impressed with Bazball and England's road to this India series, Ashwin said England missed a massive opportunity by ruining it themselves and that Stokes and England can learn from this series loss.

“Bazball is about the transfer of pressure onto the opponents. But after the transfer of pressure, what happens? They should be like, ‘We have to make them pay!’ If they manage to do that, then the game is on. This series would have gone their way with the inexperience we had (in our ranks).

“They had a huge chance. Even before they came here, they were down 0-2 in the Ashes and levelled it at 2-2. They then plundered Pakistan at their home. But this series loss is something that Ben Stokes and Co could learn from,” Ashwin concluded.

Ravi Ashwin points out reasons behind Bazball’s failure in India

India's ace spinner Ravichandran has said that 'Bazball' is not just aggressive cricket but defenceless. Ashwin made the comments after India's 4-1 win series victory over England in the recently-concluded five-Test series. The spinner was the most successful bowler of the series - taking 26 wickets in five matches.

“The one thing that I personally understood after the first Test is that Bazball isn’t just aggressive cricket,” he said. “It is defenceless cricket," said Ashwin on his YouTube channel. "They aren’t going to play a defensive shot at all. They are going to get out if they play defence."

Ashwin also expressed surprise over England's Joe Root taking the Bazball approach despite being one of the best defence batters in world cricket. Root was also criticised by former England players for playing rash shots and giving away his wickets during crunch situations in the series.

"To my surprise, Joe Root also agreed to their game plan. Because if you take world cricket’s best defence rankings, Joe Root is an easy No.1 on that list against spin. He also bought into their approach,” Ashwin added.

England had a winning start to the series by beating India in the first Test by 28 runs in Hyderabad. Things, however, soon went haywire for the visitors as in the next four Tests, they lost by 106 runs in Vizag, 434 runs in Rajkot, five wickets in Ranchi and an innings & 64 runs in Dharamsala.

England just couldn't keep up the fight with India in either batting or bowling and much of the onus lies on their seniors. With India short of Virat Kohli in the entire series, KL Rahul for four Tests and Ravindra Jadeja for the second Test in addition to an inexperienced middle order, England had a chance to capitalise but they failed.

'It is defenceless cricket,' says India spinner Ravi Ashwin about Bazball after series victory over England

Playing his 100th Test match, ace spinner Ravichandran Ashwin picked a five-wicket haul in the second innings to help India beat England by an innings and 64 runs and win the five-match series 4-1.

Ashwin left the team midway into the third Test (in Rajkot) only to return and wreak havoc with the ball in the remainder of the series, returning with 26 wickets from five matches at 24.81.

Reflecting on his star-studded performance throughout the five Tests, Ashwin said he is pleased with his efforts while picking his best spell from the series.

“Very happy, can't really put a wrapper on how I'm feeling. It's been quite a lot that has happened over the last week or so, a lot of talk about the 100th Test.”

“Overwhelmed, a lot of well-wishers have come forward and wished me well. Great previews by the media team of the BCCI. But to have a good game in terms of wickets, what more can a bowler ask for?,” Ashwin said after guiding India home in the Dharamsala Test.

Meanwhile, Ashwin has been every touring captain’s worst nightmare purely for the records he holds in Tests in India. In this five-match series, Ashwin returned with two five-fors and one four-wicket haul, causing trouble to each England batter, mainly their skipper Ben Stokes, whom he got out a few times.

Ashwin's favourite spell against England

Looking back at his performances that made headlines, Ashwin sounded pleased with how the ball left his hand in the final Test, wherein he picked five for 77 in the second innings.

“Through the series, I have gone to different actions, different speeds, and different releases all because India is one place where we play in so many venues, and every surface requires a different sort of skillset to be executed.”

“But overall, I was pleased with how the ball came out in this game, even though I went for a few big hits. It's probably because of the fact that the ball is hanging on both sides of the blade. Probably most pleased with this performance and the second innings at Ranchi,” Ashwin said of his best outing against England at home this time.

On his experiments as a bowler, Ashwin said he likes to keep his ears open to constructive criticism and even try to make changes to his game going by the feedback.

“I am the least bit insecure about what people feel about me. I know that a cricketer or anybody at the top level of any other profession will have to take criticism from experts. This is one such case, I have kept my eyes open. I have listened to good feedback and good criticism and taken it on board,” Ashwin noted.

IND v ENG: Ravi Ashwin reflects on monumental Test series win over England, picks his best performance

The Indian Team completed a 4-1 series win over England in the Test series, and head coach Rahul Dravid says he cannot stop being prouder of this playing unit.

Dravid said India showed character by winning the series 4-1 after losing the first game in Hyderabad. The veteran batter also hailed the youngsters for stepping up in this injury crisis phase for the hosts, with several top stars, including Mohammed Shami and KL Rahul, missing from action besides Virat Kohli who had personal things to cater to.

Speaking after the final Test in Dharamsala, which India won by an innings and 64 runs, Dravid reflected on this massive series win for India and how he felt about dealing with some new faces and veterans in the dressing room.

“Yeah, really proud, to be honest,” Dravid said after India won the fifth Test.

“To go behind in the first Test, obviously, it was a little bit disappointing, but just credit to the team and all the players, the way they bounced back. I thought we were able to keep a lot of calmness in spite of losing that first match.”

“I still believed that we had the skills and the abilities to compete. And just the way we performed, especially when we've been put under pressure at various stages in the series. We've always found people to step up, the team to stand up. So as a coach and as a support staff, I couldn't be really prouder of this team and the way they've played right through the series,” the head coach shared his thoughts on Team India’s massive comeback and excellent performance.

Excited to work with new players

Having missed out on playing some of the top names in world cricket, let alone in India, with Kohli, Shami and Rahul among them, the youngsters made a difference, impressing everyone with their performances when it mattered.

Dravid was loud in praising each member of the dressing room and shed some exciting words for the India captain Rohit Sharma, who led this inexperienced team to beat the high-flying English side in their home conditions.

“I think I'm privileged to work with a lovely team. It's not just about me. And I think this is a fantastic bunch of professionals that I have the privilege of working with. And I'm learning from them all the time.”

“Rohit [Sharma] has been fantastic to work with. I think he's a terrific leader. And just the guys gravitate towards him phenomenally, which is fantastic to see,” the head coach added.

IND vs ENG: Ravi Ashwin stars with five-for in 100th Test as India wrap up series 4-1

Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has struggled to showcase his magic during the ongoing England series, while his partner Kuldeep Yadav has been a positive for the hosts, cricketer-turned-commentator Dinesh Karthik said. Following day two play in Ranchi, Karthik touched upon this topic, saying England rookies have done far better than the Indian bowling trio.

With two of England's spinners – Jack Leach and Rehan Ahmed getting ruled out of the remainder of the series for respective reasons, the visitors had just Tom Hartley and Shoaib Bashir to pick from. Both were named in the playing XI for the Ranchi Test, with Bashir turning heads with his performance in the game.

Following the second day's play, Bashir had picked four in the first innings, putting India on the backfoot.

On the other hand, India's Ravi Ashwin failed to trouble England in the first innings, picking just one wicket for 83, while Ravindra Jadeja returned with four.

“The inexperienced England spinners have definitely bowled better than Indian spinners in this Test. Speaking about each spinner, Kuldeep has been a positive for India, Jadeja has not been consistent, but yes, R Ashwin has definitely not had his best series in India. It’s not often that you can go four Test matches in India without an Ashwin fifer or a four-fer,” Karthik said while speaking with Cricbuzz.

Karthik impressed with English spinners

Lauding the young batch of England spinners, with most of them playing their first international series, Karthik said they have shown promise and delivered, helping their team stay alive in this series.

While Tom Hartley remains England’s best bowler with 18 wickets in four games, Rehan was their second-best, picking 11 from three Tests.

“Going from what has happened, you have to say that English spinners have done better than Indian spinners in this series. This is the first time they’re travelling to India. It’s like a completely inexperienced medium or fast-bowling attack going to Australia or England and doing better than their fast-bowlers,” Karthik added.

Meanwhile, India has staged a comeback in this game, much like England in the first innings. India has crossed the 250-run mark, cutting down the deficit.

Yashasvi Jaiswal and Dhruv Jurel completed their fifties in the second innings.

IND vs ENG, 4th Test Day 3: India's Ravi Ashwin, Rohit Sharma break multiple records in Ranchi

Indian spinner Ravi Ashwin said that the pitch in Ranchi didn't have much bite and that's why he used a lot of side spin on day 3 (Feb 25) of the ongoing fourth Test against England. Thanks to Ashwin's exploits, England were bowled out for 145 runs in their second innings, setting India a target of 192 to win the match and the series.

"Enjoyed bowling with the new ball. I put my hand up. Enjoyed bowling with a bit more speed. Had to rewire the way I think about the game. Sometimes when I come here I find there's not as much bite. Had to go a lot of side spin and hammer into the pitch. Didn't want to give extra runs because we're chasing last," said Ashwin after the day's play.

IND vs ENG, 3rd Test: Ravi Ashwin set to rejoin Indian team in Rajkot, confirms BCCI

Former England skipper Alastair Cook has called India spinner Ravi Ashwin running on the pitch on day 2 (Friday, Feb 16) of the third Test against England 'deliberate.' Cook said that the Indian spinner did so to get help when he would bowl during the second innings. The former England skipper made the comments on Friday while commentating on TNT Sports. Notably, India were penalised for Ashwin's action and England started their innings at 5/0 in Rajkot.

"Is it deliberate? Yes, it is. It's a tactical ploy that you can disturb the middle of the wicket because Ashwin wanted as much help [as possible] when he bowls. That was gamesmanship there, wasn't it?" Cook had said.

Ashwin was told about Cook's opinion at the end of day's play and gave a befitting reply in the press conference, saying: "They clearly warned some of our batters (on Thursday) for running on the pitch. I was aware of it, but my poor motor skills didn't allow me to get off the pitch in time. If the English media and players think it was on purpose, it wasn't."

"If that's how they want to treat it, so be it. I went to (on-field umpires) Joel (Wilson) and Kumar (Dharmasena) and said 'that's pure poor motor skills'. If I was any better, I would have been in the Olympics. Why play cricket?"

Later in the day on February 16, Ashwin withdrew from the Test due to a medical emergency at home. The bowler, however, did manage to take his 500th Test wicket - becoming only the second Indian bowler to do so behind Anil Kumble.

Overall, Ashwin is the ninth bowler and fifth spinner in the world to take 500 or more Test wickets. Among active cricketers, Ashwin is third highest Test wicket taker behind England's James Anderson (696) and Australia's Nathan Lyon (517).

IND v ENG Test: Nathan Lyon congratulates Ravi Ashwin on entering 500-wicket club

Ace India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin was penalised on day two of the ongoing Rajkot Test against England for running on the protected area of the pitch. The on-field umpires had already warned the home side when Ravindra Jadeja, on day one, did the same; when this incident occurred for the second time, they penalised Ashwin – giving England an extra five-run cushion to start their innings. As a result, England’s scorecard while starting their first innings will read 5/0.

Per the law book, the protected area is referred to as, "that area of the pitch contained within a rectangle bounded at each end by imaginary lines parallel to the popping creases and 5 ft/1.52 m in front of each, and on the sides by imaginary lines, one each side of the imaginary line joining the centres of the two middle stumps, each parallel to it and 1 ft/30.48 cm from it".

The incident happened during the 102nd over on day two when Ashwin pushed the ball off Rehan Ahmed towards the cover and went for the run, only for him to run on the protected area. Though Dhruv Jurel sent him back, the umpires went up to Ashwin, informing him about the mistake that he had made and the repercussions that followed.

Ashwin looked visibly upset with the umpires' call to penalise him.

What does the rule book say?

According to the rules laid down, in Law 41.14 in this case, concerning batters damaging the pitch, "It is unfair to cause deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch. If the striker enters the protected area in playing or playing at the ball, he/she must move from it immediately thereafter. A batter will be deemed to be causing avoidable damage if either umpire considers that his/her presence on the pitch is without reasonable cause."

"If either batter causes deliberate or avoidable damage to the pitch, other than as in 41.15, at the first instance, the umpire seeing the contravention shall, when the ball is dead, inform the other umpire of the occurrence. The bowler's end umpire shall then warn both batters that the practice is unfair and indicate that this is a first and final warning. This warning shall apply throughout the innings. The umpire shall so inform each incoming batter, inform the captain of the fielding side and, as soon as practicable, the captain of the batting side of what has occurred,” it further states.

However, India are in a comfortable position, scoring over 400 in the first innings. Captain Rohit Sharma and Ravindra Jadeja starred with the bat in hand, hitting respective centuries.

IND v ENG, Rajkot Test: Here’s why England will start their first innings with five runs on board

India spinner Ravi Ashwin has said that he doesn't want to talk about England's Bazball approach yet in the ongoing Test series in India. The veteran off spinner, however, said that he'll share his views after the five-match series is over. India and England are currently tied at 1-1 in the series with the next match starting on February 15 in Rajkot.

“I would talk about England’s game, their mental space and everything after the five matches get over. I don’t want to get into the intricate details right now,” Ashwin said on his YouTube channel as the teams are into a mid-series break.

The spinner also talked about India's top performers so far, that is, batter Yashasvi Jaiswal and bowler Jasprit Bumrah. Ashwin praised Bumrah for becoming India's first pacer to become number one in Tests as well.

“The real show stealer is BoomBall,” Ashwin said. “We saw a little of Jaisball also. Jasprit Bumrah has bowled extraordinarily, being the leading wicket-taker with 14 wickets. He is also the latest number-one Test bowler in the world. A big congratulations from my side. I’m a big fan of him. This achievement is an Himalayan feat,” he added.

The hosts India lost the first match in Hyderabad by 28 runs but made an emphatic comeback in the second Test played in Vizag and won by 106 runs.

Jack Leach out for England

England suffered a blow to their chances of scripting history in India as their lead spinner, Jack Leach, got ruled out from the remainder of the series with a knee injury. The left-handed orthodox spinner got injured during day one of the Hyderabad Test, playing a limited role in the famous win for the visitors. Jack hurt his knee while trying to stop the ball from going to the boundary. Leach missed the second Test in Vizag.

'Will talk about Bazball after series is over,' says India spinner Ravi Ashwin

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin and England's Jonny Bairstow exchanged some words after Ashwin's animated celebration after Bairstow wicket on day 4 (Feb 5) of the second Test in Vizag. Bairstow was the sixth English wicket to fall on Monday before lunch as England's chase of 399 derailed. The English batter was trapped LBW by Jasprit Bumrah who took nine wickets in the game to earn Player of the Match award.

In the last over before lunch, Bumrah nipped one back into the batter and rapped him on the pads. The batter was given LBW and Ashwin went to his face to celebrate the wicket. Bairstow, clearly not amused by Ashwin's celebration, said a few words to the Indian spinner. Have a look at the video below:

The off spinner again struck shortly after to dismiss first Test's hero Ollie Pope and Joe Root as England found themselves at 154/4 shortly before lunch on day 4. In the second session, Skipper Ben Stokes was found short by Shreyas Iyer while trying to sneak a quick single as all of England's hope to win the match became futile. Ben Foakes and Tom Hartley did put up a bit of resistance with a 55-run partnership for the eighth wicket before Bumrah sent back Foakes with a return catch off his own bowling. England's last two wickets fell cheaply as India completed a much-needed turn around after losing the first Test by 28 runs in Hyderabad. The third Test of the series will be played from February 15-19 in Rajkot.

IND vs ENG, 2nd Test: Ravi Ashwin's 'IN THE FACE' celebration of Jonny Bairstow's wicket - WATCH

Veteran India spinner Ravi Ashwin has said that Rinku Singh brings Dhoni-like composure whenever he comes out to bat for India. The comments come on the back of impressive performances by the left-hand batter in the recently-concluded T20I series against Afghanistan. Rinku remained not out in all three matches of the series, scoring 16, 9 and 69 runs, respectively. He was also involved in the unbeaten 190-run partnership with skipper Rohit Sharma in the third T20I which India eventually won in double super over.

“He is somebody I’d call a left-handed Dhoni. I can’t compare him to Dhoni just yet because Dhoni is too big. But, I am talking about the composure that he brings,” R Ashwin said on his YouTube channel.

“The composure doesn’t change whether the team is batting first or chasing. His composure towards the back end of the innings is a bonus,” added Ashwin.

Former India skipper MS Dhoni was known for taking the game deep and finishing them with calmness. Rinku has also been doing the same in the 15 T20 games he has played for India so far. The batter has 356 runs to his name at an average of 89, thanks to staying not out seven out of 11 times that he has batted in the total of 15 T20Is.

The batter, who plays for the Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) in India's domestic T20 tournament Indian Premier League (IPL) shot to fame last year when he hit five sixes off the last five balls in a match to take his team home. Apart from IPL, Rinku plays for the state of Uttar Pradesh in the domestic set up.

Ashwin also praised the batter for his performance in the first-class cricket as well as spending enough time on the bench while with KKR.

“He has been consistently scoring buckets of runs for UP and broke his way into the Indian team. He was on the KKR bench for many years,” Ashwin added.

Veteran India spinner Ravi Ashwin compares Rinku Singh to MS Dhoni for THIS quality

Former England skipper Kevin Pietersen has advised the touring English side to be wary of getting LBW or bowled to Indian spinners in the upcoming Test series. The five-Test series starts January 25 in Hyderabad and there are four spinners in the Indian squad. Notably, Pietersen was part of the England squad which had last won a Test series in India back in 2012.

“If you nick it to slip, no problem at all. If you get bowled or lbw that’s a big issue. You have so much time to wait for the ball and then judge length or line and then move,” Pietersen said in an interview to the Times.

“If your feet are good, and you are not planting your front foot and you are playing down the line of the ball, you should be fine. Just make sure you are not getting bowled or lbw,” he added.

India have named Ravi Ashwin, Ravindra Jadeja, Kuldeep Yadav and Axar Patel in the squad. Pietersen also shared his experience playing Ashwin and Jadeja from the tour of 2012.

“I picked Ashwin’s ‘doosra’. He used to load the ball at the back of his run-up, and I think he still does that now. He never ran up with the ball in his hand as an off spinner and changed it late for the doosra; you can’t do that. He loaded it up early,” said Pietersen.

“I faced Jadeja a lot. It’s about technique. Jadeja is not Murali and he’s not Shane Warne. He’s a left-arm spinner that bowls it one way and occasionally gets the ball to slide on. If your technique is solid enough to play the ball that skids on, you should be fine,” he added.

After Hyderabad, the second Test will be played in Visakhapatnam from February 2 before the tour moves to Rajkot, Ranchi and Dharamsala for the next three Tests, respectively.

India coach Rahul Dravid lauded team captain Rohit Sharma for swapping himself with ‘quicker between the wickets batter Rinku Singh on the last ball of the first of the two super overs against Afghanistan during the 3rd T20I in Bengaluru. That move paid dividends as Rinku completed the run, leading the game into the second super over, where India won the match and completed a clean sweep over Afghanistan.

Much like how Ravi Ashwin, playing for Rajasthan Royals (in IPL 2022) decided to tactically retire-out himself against Lucknow Super Giants, Rohit did the same in an international game on Wednesday in Bengaluru.

“That's Ash-level thinking,” Dravid said when asked about Rohit doing a last-moment swap.

Having fared incredibly well with the bat in the first innings by smashing his fifth T20I hundred - most by any batter thus far, Rohit hogged all the limelight. Entering this match with two ducks beside his name in the first two T20Is, Rohit needed an exceptional outing, which he delivered big time.

After being reduced to 22 for four at one stage, India returned in some style by posting 212/4, riding on a 190-run stand between Rohit and Rinku Singh, who slammed a 39-ball 69, hitting six sixes and two fours.

After Mukesh Kumar leaked 17 runs in the first super over, Rohit decided to bowl leg-spinner Ravi Bishnoi in the second, which turned out to be a masterstroke.

Defending 11 runs, the rookie spinner picked two wickets in the first three balls without conceding a run, resulting in India winning the thriller.

"I think Rohit went with his gut; he went with a call... I think he felt that the spinner had a better chance to take those two wickets. It was one of the games when 11 wasn't probably a huge score, and where you know that if they batted those six balls, with the power they had, they probably would've got the 12 runs. You needed to take two wickets," Dravid said.

Former India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh has said veteran off-spinner Ravi Ashwin doesn't deserve a place in the white-ball cricket team. Yuvraj's statement comes as India is preparing for the T20 World Cup scheduled to be played in June later this year in the USA and West Indies. Notably, Ashwin was part of India's ODI World Cup 2023 squad but managed to play only one game, that is, against Australia in Chennai.

"Ashwin is a great bowler but I don't think he deserves a place in ODIs and T20s," said Yuvraj to media outlet Times of India. The retired all-rounder further expanded on his views and reasoned that the spinner doesn't offer anything with bat or fielding to get a place in the white-ball team.

England's red-ball vice-captain Ollie Pope has also conceded that there's going to be 'outside noise' about the pitches on their upcoming Test tour of India.

India spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has hit back at former England skipper Michael Vaughan for calling the current Indian team an underachieving side. Vaughan's comments had come during the recently concluded Australia-Pakistan Test series.

"They haven't won much in recent times. I think they are (an underachieving side). They don't win anything. When was the last time they won something? With all the talent they have, all the skill-set (they should have achieved more," Vaughan said on Fox Sports while commentating during the second Australia-Pakistan Test.

The Indian off-spinner, in reply has asserted that India, especially in Tests, is one of the best travelling teams in the current times.

Taking to his YouTube channel, Ashwin said, "Yes, we haven't won ICC trophies for years. We call ourselves the powerhouses of the game. But the Test team has been one of the best traveling teams in the vicinity. We have seen many great results.”

Ashwin's statement is valid as India are the only side to beat Australia in Australia in Tests since 2016. India is also the only Asian team ever to win a Test series Down Under which they did twice, in 2018 and 2020. India has also been to two World Test Championship (WTC) finals in as many editions. They, however, failed to win on both occasions - first against New Zealand (2021) then versus Australia (2023).

Vaughan's comments, however, had some backing as India have failed to win a silverware in a long time. The last time India won an ICC tournament was in 2013 when they had lifted the Champions Trophy under erstwhile skipper MS Dhoni.

Most recently, India drew a two-Test series in South Africa 1-1. Rohit Sharma-led side had lost the first Test by an innings and 32 runs in Centurion before winning the next one in Cape Town.

Speaking on the same, Ashwin said: "Just reverse the situation. SA batted first in this Test after winning the toss. If SA had batted first after winning the toss in Centurion, wasn't there a chance they could have gotten all out by 65? Even India was staring at the barrel at 20/3, thanks to Virat and Shreyas' partnership from there to save us.”

India are powerhouse: Ravi Ashwin slams ex-England skipper Michael Vaughan for 'underachieving side' comment

India all-rounder Ravindra Jadeja has recovered from the ‘upper back spasm’ he suffered ahead of the start of the first Test and will make his return to the playing XI for India’s second match against South Africa in Cape Town, starting January 3. With Jadeja returning, India will drop Ravi Ashwin or Shardul Thakur for the New Year’s Test.

Jadeja was in line to play the Boxing Day Test in Centurion; however, after complaining of pain in his back before the first day’s play, India rested him, picking Ravi Ashwin in the side. The veteran off-spinner failed to put up an inspiring performance, picking just one wicket for 41 runs in 19 overs. With the bat in hand, Ashwin scored just eight runs across two innings.

India succumbed to an embarrassing inning and a 32-run defeat in the first match, with the game ending inside three days. Although bowlers, mainly pacers, picked nine out of ten wickets, Ashwin’s below-par show with the ball had India on the backfoot in South Africa’s first innings, with centurion Dean Elgar and Marco Jansen scoring easily against India's spinner.

Having gone down embarrassingly in Centurion in this two-match Test series, the Rohit Sharma-led side will aim to pull up their socks and get into their element ahead of the next Test.

Jasprit Bumrah was India’s best bowler in the first Test, returning with four for 69 inside 25 overs.

Though Shardul Thakur picked the big wicket of Dean Elgar on 185, he was the most expensive bowler, going for 101 runs from 19 overs. Debutant Prasidh Krishna picked a wicket but looked far from convincing.

Meanwhile, in the absence of seasoned campaigner Mohammed Shami, Avesh Khan is added to the squad as his replacement for the next Test.

SA v IND: Ravindra Jadeja recovers from back injury, set to return to XI for Cape Town Test

Pat Cummins won the toss and decided to take the trophy home in the World Cup 2023 final in Ahmedabad. Cummins’ call to bowl first raised quite a few eyebrows. Everyone, including the pundits and commentators, questioned such tactics. Less did they know that decision would eventually silence the spectators. India’s Ravi Ashwin was one of them, admitting to have been deceived by the Australian tactics.

Australia bowled first and restricted India to an under-par total of 240, putting them on the backfoot straightaway. Although with Mohammad Shami and Jaspreet Bumrah picked three early wickets inside the Powerplay, Travis Head’s second World Cup hundred (137 off 120 balls) saw Australia through with six wickets in hand.

Days after the heartbreaking loss, Ravi Ashwin, on his YouTube channel, admitted to being stunned by Cummins’ call in the first place.

Upon getting an answer from Oz chief selector George Bailey during the mid-innings, he was left bamboozled.

Despite knowing how well India defended totals, even relatively smaller ones (like against England) in the lead-up to the World Cup final, Australia took a brave call to bowl first on the day when it mattered the most.

That brought them laurels, considering their reading of the pitch and how batting would become easier in the second innings.

Speaking on those lines, Ashwin revealed, “Australia totally deceived me personally. I had a chat with George Bailey during the mid-innings, and I asked him why you guys didn’t bat first like you always do.

"He answered back, ‘We have played IPL & bilateral series here a lot. Red soil disintegrates, but not the black soil & it gets better under lights. There is no impact of dew on red soil, but black soil gives a good turn in the afternoon & then it will become a concrete at night. This is our experience.”

Pat did a Dhoni in the World Cup final

Like how MS Dhoni turned the tables around in the 2011 World Cup final, delivering on the D-day despite not being in the best of runs in the lead-up, Australia captain Pat Cummins had an almost similar run.

His performance and leadership in the CWC final had Australia’s nose in the front throughout.

Applauding Cummins on his star-studded performance, Ashwin said, “Pat Cummins bowled a crucial spell. He got rid of Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer. Cummins was not having a great World Cup but came back to form in the last four games. He bowled a lot of off-cutters. Even in the final, he didn’t pitch the ball up to rule out the possibility of drives.”
