Playing against New Zealand, the South African veteran star was at his fluent best and&nbsp;wreaked havoc with the bat. De Kock took 103 balls to score his 21st ton for the side and now goes level with the great Herschelle Gibbs for most hundreds. The hundred also saw him return to the top of the run scorer’s chart with 545 runs. Before getting out, the 30-year-old scored 114 runs off 116 deliveries that included 3 sixes and 10 fours and was striking at almost run-a-ball.

He scored the ton he also crossed the 500-run mark in the ODI World Cup, becoming the first player from South Africa to attain the feat. He leapfrogged Jacques Kallis’ tally of 485 runs in the 2007 ODI World Cup in the West Indies.

Ever since De Kock has turned up in India for the World Cup, the left-hander has been in superb form. After his third ton of the tournament, which came against the Bangla Tigers, he is now also the leading run-scorer, with 407 runs at an average of 81.40 and a strike rate of 114.97.

De Kock scored a ton versus Sri Lanka and Australia and returned with a breathtaking 174 in the clash versus Bangladesh. The Aiden Markram-led Proteas thrashed Bangladesh by 149 runs after posting 382/5 and dismissing them for 233 at the iconic Wankhede Stadium stadium in Mumbai.&nbsp;

Mahmudullah’s 111&nbsp;runs proved consolation as Bangladesh were never in the scene to chase the mammoth 383-run target. In an overall show by the Proteas bowlers, Marco Jansen, Lizaad Williams, and others chipped in with at least one wicket. With no real contribution from other batters, Bangladesh surrendered two points and now face a tough prospect to make the final four.

Earlier, riding on another De Kock ton South Africa scored 382/5 in their 50 overs. The wicketkeeper-batter playing in his final tournament for the national side scored his third hundred of the World Cup while leapfrogging Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the most runs in the tournament. His innings of 174 runs consisted of 15 fours and 7 sixes while striking at a rate of 125. He was well supported by skipper Aiden Markram (60) and Heinrich Klaasen (90) forming 131 and 142 runs stand with them.

Klaasen was unfortunate to have missed out on his second ODI World Cup hundred but made sure South Africa got closer to another 400-run total. David Miller’s 34 off 15 also helped the cause for the Proteas. Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with 67/2 in his 6 overs.

South Africa will next take the field on Friday (Oct 27) when they face out-of-form Pakistan who have lost three consecutive matches in Chennai. A win in that match could put Markram’s men on the brink of semifinal qualification. On the contrary, Bangladesh will take on the Netherlands at the Eden Gardens on Saturday as they look to register their second win of the ODI World Cup.

A consecutive World Cup 2023 hundred by Quinton de Kock and three wickets by Kagiso Rabada helped South Africa inflict a superb 134-win over Australia in Lucknow on Friday.

Electing to bowl first after winning the toss, Australia, unlike how they performed against India in their CWC opener, leaked runs, with Starc, Hazlewood and Cummins looking clueless against South African openers. Although there were a few missed chances, and even batters got deceived early on, Temba Bavuma and Quinton de Kock had South Africa rolling inside the first ten overs.

Bavuma and Rassie van der Dussen got out after scoring 35 and 26, respectively, while de Kock notched a back-to-back World Cup hundred, putting South Africa in the driver’s seat.&nbsp;

Fresh from his record-breaking quickest CWC ton against Sri Lanka, Aiden Markram completed a fifty (56 off 44), and one of the better batters of spin bowling, Heinrich Klaasen, contributed with 29.

Australia got off to a poor start, losing both openers (Mitchell Marsh on seven and David Warner on 13) inside the seven overs, with a scorecard reading 27/2. Steve Smith chipped in with a few fours before getting trapped in front of the wickets off Rabada on 19. At that time, Australia was reduced to 50 for three.

Just when it looked like Josh Inglis, who replaced Alex Carey in the XI for this game, could turn the tide around for his side, a peach of a delivery by spearhead Rabada broke his stumps, and Australia’s hopes of going for a win. South Africa keeper-batter Quinton de Kock has accepted the emergence of franchise-based T20 leagues, and the money that comes with it prompted his decision to retire from ODI cricket at 30. Having announced his Test retirement a couple of years ago, de Kock will continue playing T20Is for the Proteas.

Been around on the international circuit for the last 11 years, de Kock insisted he remained loyal to South African cricket and the fans, but it is time he ‘tops up’ his earnings as his career winds down.

Speaking with the host broadcaster, de Kock admitted money was one of the reasons for him to take a call on cutting his international future. He added he is full of gratitude to be able to do for over a decade for his country, but the time has come for him to secure his future by participating in the T20 leagues, starting with the BBL in December, which will clash with South Africa’s home ODIs against India.

"I am not going to sit here and deny that it doesn't. It helps with my decision. I've been around for 10 or 11 years, and I've tried to keep my loyalty to the team, which I think I've done really well. I think I have represented the Proteas badge very well over my career," de Kock said before the start of the final ODI against Australia in Johannesburg.

De Kock insisted anyone else would have also taken the same call.

“T20 events - I am not going to deny that there is a lot of money, and coming to the end of your career, guys want to get their final top-up before their career finishes. Any normal person would do it anyway. If I was really not that loyal, I would have done it five years ago when it really took off. Now I am older, and with me coming to the downslope of my career, it's time,” the keeper-batter added.

<h2>De Kock recalls favourite moment</h2>

Having served in top-flight cricket from a younger age, de Kock recalled his favourite inning across formats. Though his career-best 178 against Australia in 2016 was thought to be his go-to answer, the left-handed batter rated his 51 against Sri Lanka in the challenging conditions during the Galle Test in 2014 among his best.

"We won in Sri Lanka one-nil, which is never an easy feat for teams not from the subcontinent," De Kock said.

"I've had a lot of good memories along the way, things you can't just forget. The guys know I am an elephant, I don't forget. There are things I don't forget. I remember every last bit of detail about everything. It's some skill I have just developed,” the South African added.

Meanwhile, in his final home ODI against Australia, de Kock scored 27 off 29 balls as South Africa posted 315 for nine.

South Africa batter Quinton de Kock has called time on his ODI career on Tuesday (September 5), bringing to an end his 10-year association with the national side. The upcoming ODI World Cup will be De Kock’s last tournament for the ODI side. Having also announced retirement from the Test side in December 2021, he will bow out of the game with an opportunity to complete 6,000 runs in the World Cup where his team will start their adventure against Sri Lanka on Saturday, October 7.

<h2>De Kock hangs boots</h2>

"Quinton de Kock has been a really good servant to South African cricket," South Africa's Director of Cricket Enoch Nkwe said.

"He set the benchmark with his attacking batting style and was a key member of the squad for a number of years. He also wore the captain's armband and that is an honour that very few people get to hold.”

At the time of writing, the 30-year-old has made 140 appearances in the ODI format with 5,966 runs at an average of 44.85. His ODI career also includes 17 hundreds and 29 fifties with a best of 178 against Australia at Centurion in 2016. He was the fourth fastest to reach 1,000 runs in the ODI format in just 21 innings.

"We understand his decision to step back from ODI cricket and we want to thank him for his service over the years. We wish him well for the future but still look forward to seeing him represent the Proteas in T20I cricket,” the South African cricket body said in its&nbsp;statement.

De Kock made his debut with the national side in 2012 against New Zealand in the T20I format at Durban and scored 28 runs in a one-sided contest. He would make his ODI debut against the same side in January 2013 at Paarl. He was part of the South African side during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup.

Earlier, the South Africa cricket team announced its 15-member squad for the upcoming ODI World Cup and&nbsp;there were no big surprises. Prior to playing the main tournament, they have warm-up games scheduled against Afghanistan on 29 September and New Zealand on 2 October. "Each of them has to manage that balance between domestic competitions, their international schedule and the management of their players. Each of those boards is in a slightly different situation. So there isn't a one-size-fits-all approach to that balancing issue," he added.

Recently, former Indian head coach Ravi Shastri said on Fan Code, "There is no harm in shortening the span of the game. When one-day cricket started, it was of 60 overs. When we won the World Cup in 1983, it was of 60 overs. After that, people thought that 60 overs were a bit too long. People found that span of overs between 20 to 40 hard to digest.
