Proteas continue World Cup onslaught with thumping win over Bangladesh by 149 runs, claim second spot in table

South Africa continued their impressive ODI World Cup campaign after another big win in Mumbai to go second in the league table. Days after beating England by a record margin, Temba Bavuma’s men got the better of Bangladesh in their latest big win by 149runs on Tuesday (Oct 24). Quinton de Kock was yet again the star man for the Proteas having scored 174 runs, second highest score by a South African in World Cup innings. The latest defeat for Bangladesh also condemned them to the bottom spot in the ODI World Cup standings.

Continuing from where they left off against England, South Africa bowlers were right on the money as they bowled out Shakib Al Hasan’s men for 233runs. Mahmudullah’s 111runs proved consolation as Bangladesh were never in the scene to chase the mammoth 383-run target. In an overall show by the Proteas bowlers, Marco Jansen, Lizaad Williams, and others chipped in with at least one wicket. With no real contribution from other batters, Bangladesh surrendered two points and now face a tough prospect to make the final four.

Earlier, riding on another De Kock ton South Africa scored 382/5 in their 50 overs. The wicketkeeper-batter playing in his final tournament for the national side scored his third hundred of the World Cup while leapfrogging Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli for the most runs in the tournament. His innings of 174 runs consisted of 15 fours and 7 sixes while striking at a rate of 125. He was well supported by skipper Aiden Markram (60) and Heinrich Klaasen (90) forming 131 and 142 runs stand with them.

Klaasen was unfortunate to have missed out on his second ODI World Cup hundred but made sure South Africa got closer to another 400-run total. David Miller’s 34 off 15 also helped the cause for the Proteas. Hasan Mahmud was the pick of the bowlers for Bangladesh with 67/2 in his 6 overs.

South Africa will next take the field on Friday (Oct 27) when they face out-of-form Pakistan who have lost three consecutive matches in Chennai. A win in that match could put Markram’s men on the brink of semifinal qualification. On the contrary, Bangladesh will take on the Netherlands at the Eden Gardens on Saturday as they look to register their second win of the ODI World Cup.
