The majority of the remains were discovered in the town of Bucha, where hundreds of corpses have been uncovered since Russian forces departed, according to Kyiv regional police commander Andriy Nebytov in a video shared on Twitter.

According to Ukraine, Russian forces killed the residents found dead in Bucha during their occupation. The number of people found deceased in Bucha, as well as the circumstances surrounding their deaths, have yet to be confirmed.

Since the invasion of Ukraine on February 24, Russia has denied targeting civilians.

It has dismissed claims that Russian forces killed people in Bucha while occupying the city as a "monstrous forgery" intended to discredit the Russian army.

"To date, we have found, examined and handed over to forensic institutions 1,150 bodies of dead civilians," Nebytov said in the video, in which he stood in the rubble of buildings destroyed during heavy fighting in the Kyiv region.

"I want to emphasise that these are civilians, not military," he said.

The video was posted on the day that United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres was due to hold talks in Kyiv with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskiy.

Ukrainian television showed Guterres visiting the town of Borodyanka, where Zelenskiy has said the situation is "significantly more dreadful" than in nearby Bucha.

Nigerian police have raided a bomb factory in the southeast where separatist violence is on the rise and arrested a suspect, a spokesman said Saturday.

The raid happened on Wednesday at Uba Umuaka in southeastern Imo state following a tip-off, state police spokesman Michael Abattam said in a statement.

He said police were informed about a hideout where the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and its militant wing, the Eastern Security Network (ESN) "are manufacturing Improvised Explosive Devices used in attacking police stations and government facilities in the state".

Abattam said items recovered included one IED, cannon steel piping, bags of potassium nitrate, sulphur, sand and gunpowder.

"Investigation is ongoing. The suspect has made useful statement and mentioned members of his gang outside the state," he added.

Southeast Nigeria has seen a surge in violence, with more than 130 police and other security personnel killed by gunmen since last year, according to local media tallies.

Authorities have blamed attacks on either IPOB, which is campaigning for a separate state for the ethnic Igbo people, or ESN.

Bonilla is alleged to have "participated in a conspiracy to import controlled substances into the United States (...) using or carrying weapons," he added.

Duarte said the defense has until Monday to appeal the decision.

Bonilla was captured&nbsp;on&nbsp;March 9 north of the capital Tegucigalpa.&nbsp;

Bonilla, who was&nbsp;chief&nbsp;of police from 2012 to 2013, had been named as a "co-conspirator" during the US&nbsp;drug trafficking&nbsp;trial of Tony Hernandez, the brother of former Honduran president Juan Orlando Hernandez.

The ex-president's brother, a former Honduran congressman, was given a life sentence in the United States last year.

&nbsp;A police officer in Australia was found not guilty on Friday in the death of a 19-year-old Indigenous man whose shooting more than two years ago prompted widespread protests and worsened long-simmering tensions over the government’s treatment of the country’s native peoples.

The officer, Zachary Rolfe, 30, had been charged with murder and other counts after killing the teenager, Kumanjayi Walker, during an attempted arrest in a remote Australian community. After a closely watched trial that lasted over a month and featured testimony from more than 40 witnesses, Rolfe was cleared of all charges by a jury in the Supreme Court of the Northern Territory in Darwin.

The prosecution had argued that Rolfe used excessive force and did not need to shoot Walker two additional times after the first shot. The defence argued that Rolfe, who had been stabbed by Walker with medical scissors as officers tried to apprehend him, had acted in self-defence.

Many Indigenous Australians had seen the case as a test of whether authorities could be held accountable after what they call decades of abuses. While no police officer has been convicted of murdering an Indigenous person in Australia, nearly 500 Indigenous people have died in police custody since 1991, when a royal commission made 339 recommendations to reduce such deaths.

“We kind of knew there was only a slim chance, but we hoped so hard,” said Yasmine Musharbash, a senior lecturer in anthropology at the Australian National University who has been living in Yuendumu, where Walker was killed, and who was with members of the community who gathered in the city of Alice Springs to hear the verdict announced.

In the weeks after Walker’s death in November 2019, people throughout the country turned out at dozens of protests against police brutality toward Indigenous Australians, who are roughly 12 times as likely to be in custody as non-Indigenous Australians.

For the last five weeks, many relatives and friends of Walker had gathered on the lawn in front of the courthouse in Alice Springs, where the case was broadcast, choosing to remain outside to avoid the trauma of hearing the details of his death again.

But on Friday, after a deliberation of seven hours by the jury, they filed in to hear the verdict.

“As they read through each charge and the jury said ‘not guilty,’ and then the next one is ‘not guilty,’ and the next one is ‘not guilty’ as well — we all sat there and quietly cried,” Musharbash said.

Robin Japanangka Granites, a Yuendumu community elder who was also at the courthouse in Alice Springs, said: “We’re just feeling a bit heartbroken. Today was a time when it went not our way, but the opposite.”

On the Thursday before his death, Walker, armed with an ax, had a run-in with members of the local police force in Yuendumu as they tried to arrest him for breaching a suspended sentence. He had been released from prison the month before after serving time for property crime charges and was supposed to be at a rehabilitation facility in Alice Springs.

Three days later, on Saturday, Rolfe and another officer entered the home of Walker’s grandmother, also in Yuendumu, which has a population of about 750 people and where Walker had gone for his grandfather’s funeral.

In the scuffle, Walker stabbed Rolfe in the shoulder with a pair of medical scissors. A fellow officer restrained Walker on the ground, and Rolfe shot him three times.

In the hours that followed, Walker did not receive adequate medical care, because staff members had evacuated the health clinic in Yuendumu earlier in the day over safety concerns after a number of break-ins. The nearest clinic was some 40 miles away. Though his relatives waited for news outside the police station, they were not told of his death until 10 hours later.

Speaking to reporters outside court in Darwin on Friday, Rolfe’s attorney, David Edwardson, said there had been no winners in the case. “A young man died, and that’s tragic,” he said. He added: “At the same time, Zachary Rolfe, in my view, was wrongly charged in the first place. It was an appalling investigation and very much regretted.”

After the verdict, Rolfe hugged supporters and family members, while Walker’s relatives let out wails of anguish. Rolfe is expected to return to his job as a police officer in the Northern Territory.

Residents of remote Australian communities, which have large Indigenous populations and are among the poorest in Australia, are not necessarily hostile to the police, Musharbash said.

“People are so incredibly good at distinguishing between people who stand with them and people who are dangerous to them, and they make that distinction for police, too,” she said. “They know what a good copper is like, and they love a good copper.”

But there is a strong sense in the community that the police should not use guns and should have some awareness of their needs, she added. Rolfe, who grew up in a wealthy family in Canberra, the capital, and spent years in the army before joining the police force, had never visited Yuendumu before the day of Walker’s death.

At a news conference outside the courthouse, Valerie Napaljarri Martin, an advocate for the Yuendumu community, spoke of the “anger and grief” of those who knew Walker.

“We demand an end to guns in our communities,” she said. “We have every right to speak and to say: This must stop. Do not silence us.”

Sheriff's deputies arriving at the scene found&nbsp;five&nbsp;people shot to death -&nbsp;three&nbsp;children&nbsp;under the age of 15, the father&nbsp;and&nbsp;another adult who was not immediately identified by investigators, Grassmann said.

The Wellington protest began as a movement against vaccine mandates -- inspired by similar protests in the Canadian capital Ottawa.

Assistant Commission Richard Chambers said three officers who were taken to hospital were "recovering well".

He blamed a "certain group within the protest" for the "appalling" attack.

"Police&nbsp;officers are going about their work as best they can to bring peace to the situation... there's a group (of&nbsp;protesters) determined to bring violence and aggression -- we can't tolerate that."

On Monday&nbsp;police&nbsp;reported demonstrators hurled human faeces at them, prompting officers to protect themselves with&nbsp;riot&nbsp;shields during the latest clashes.

Ardern said she was concerned the protest was becoming increasingly violent.

"The attacks on&nbsp;the police&nbsp;have been absolutely disgraceful," she said.

"To anyone down there who thinks they're part of a peaceful protest, that's not what we've seen today -- I would encourage them to leave."

Authorities had been taking a largely hands-off approach to the demonstration, trying to persuade&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;to voluntarily move on.

But Chambers said recent events showed "genuine&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;are no longer in control of the behaviour in and around parliament".

'Leave now'

The&nbsp;protesters, inspired by Canada's "Freedom Convoy", have jammed roads with around 900 cars, trucks and campervans, then set up camp on the lawns of parliament.

They have erected tents and shelters, and organised portable toilets, food distribution points and childcare facilities.&nbsp;

Wellington residents have complained about being abused by&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;for wearing masks, while schools and businesses close to the camp have closed.

"Wellingtonians have had enough of this," Deputy Prime Minister Grant Robertson said.&nbsp;

"Our streets have been blocked, our people have been harassed, our environment has been trashed."

Robertson said those involved in the protest had crossed the line into illegal activity.

"This is a protest that has gone well beyond what I think most&nbsp;New&nbsp;Zealanders would see as a peaceful protest -- you've made your point, please leave now," he said.

Chambers said some moderate&nbsp;protesters&nbsp;had left because they were concerned about the behaviour of more extreme elements and&nbsp;police&nbsp;still hoped for a negotiated end to the demonstration.

"We continue to work really hard with leaders among the group to de-escalate the situation and ensure everyone is safe," he said.

A standoff between Canadian police and protesters continued for over seven hours after the police on Saturday arrived at the protest sites to remove demonstrators who have majorly disrupted Canada-US trade.&nbsp;

A gunman shot three people, killing two, before taking his own life Saturday at an apartment building in Brown Deer, Wisconsin, a village near Milwaukee, police said.

A witness, who was also wounded in the attack, said one of the two people killed was a man who came to the aid of a woman who was targeted by the gunman.

The witness, Eric Lewis, 36, said he was awakened by gunshots and looked out a window of the building, the Park Plaza Apartments, and saw a man holding a gun.

That man was involved in a dispute with a woman whom Lewis said he believed to be the gunman’s girlfriend.

The woman ran away, pleading for help, Lewis said. A man and a woman emerged from a car to come to her aid, he said, and the gunman shot the man who tried to help. The gunman then chased down and also shot the woman believed to be his girlfriend, he said.

Nimmer said at a news conference that police were unsure of the relationship of all of the victims, “but we know at least two knew each other.”

The identities of the victims were not made public. Nimmer said those who died were a 23-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man. A child was in the gunman’s apartment but was unharmed and placed with relatives, he said.

Lewis said he ran to the parking lot to help those who were wounded, and at that point the gunman reappeared from a second-floor balcony, firing multiple rounds from a handgun.

Lewis, who was shot in the right ankle, was treated at a hospital and released. A round also hit an officer’s car, Nimmer said. No officers were injured, he said, and no law enforcement personnel fired their weapons.

After the gunman fired on police, officers heard a gunshot that they said they believed was the gunman taking his own life. Officers took the gunman to a hospital, but he did not survive.

Police did not publicly identify the gunman.

No-knock warrants allow police to enter property without first announcing their presence and are primarily used when there is concern that evidence will be destroyed or officers will be put in danger.

Tony Romanucci, another lawyer representing Locke’s family, said Locke had “no idea” who was in his apartment. “Had they announced who they were and why they were there, this tragedy could have been averted,” Romanucci said.

Frey said in a statement Friday that no-knock warrants would not be allowed while the city reviewed its policy with experts who helped create “Breonna’s Law,” an ordinance passed after Taylor’s death that bans no-knock warrants in Louisville.

During the moratorium, which the mayor said was “to ensure safety of both the public and officers,” the police must knock, announce their presence and wait a reasonable amount of time before entering with a warrant.

Locke’s father, Andre Locke, said at the news conference that his son was the third oldest of eight siblings. He said his son had been working for the food delivery service DoorDash and was “a week away” from moving to Dallas, where his mother, Karen Wells, lives. Andre Locke said that several of his cousins worked in law enforcement and that one of them was a mentor to Amir.

“It was hurtful, it hurt deep to see my son executed, to see our son executed,” Andre Locke said. “But the part that struck me the most was that he never got a chance to see or to know who killed him.”

Wells said she and her son would frequently talk on the FaceTime app when they were apart.

“I am going to miss just being able to see my son grow into a man, that’s what I am going to miss,” Wells said. “I am going to miss the fact that he didn’t, he won’t even get the chance to become a father and give us grandchildren.”

The Minneapolis Police Department has been under scrutiny since Chauvin held his knee on Floyd’s neck for more than nine minutes during an arrest in May 2020.

Floyd’s death generated widespread outrage, and protests across the country that summer called for social justice and police reform. Of those, it found that 301 federal, state, tribal and local law enforcement officers had died because of COVID-19.

“It has been reported to NLEOMF that these officers have died due to direct exposure to the virus during the commission of their official duties,” the report said.

Felony assaults were responsible for the deaths of 84 officers last year, including 62 officers killed with firearms, the report said. Fifty-eight were killed in traffic-related incidents while working the roadways. Both the number of deaths from firearm assaults and traffic-related fatalities had risen from the previous year.

The remaining deaths were attributed to reasons such as heart attacks, strokes and 9/11-related illnesses, the report said. Other officers were killed in beatings, drownings and stabbings. One officer was killed by floodwaters, and another was killed in a tornado.

In the three decades before the pandemic, the organization’s annual tally of officers killed in the line of duty surpassed 200 only twice, in 2001 and 2007. The last time it went above 300 was in 1930.

While hundreds of COVID-19-related officer deaths were identified, the report is preliminary and its authors expected that agencies had yet to report a significant number of them.

“Law enforcement officers nationwide continue to be exposed to the COVID-19 virus in the course of their daily assignments,” it said. “Therefore, the number of line-of-duty deaths is sadly ever increasing.”

Last fall, it was reported that more than 460 U.S. law enforcement officers had died from COVID-19 infections tied to their work since the start of the pandemic. With no comprehensive accounting of how many officers had been sickened with the virus, departments from coast to coast reported large outbreaks in the ranks.
