Congress leader Prithviraj Chavan has remained firm in his stance following the backlash over his comments about Operation Sindoor, saying that he has ‘nothing to apologise for’. Chavan had said that Indian fighter jets were downed by Pakistani forces on May 7, marking the first day of Operation Sindoor. He added, “On that day, we were completely defeated. The aerial engagement that lasted for 30 minutes led to the destruction of our aircraft. The Indian Air Force was grounded and no aircraft could take off from bases like Gwalior, Bathinda, or Sirsa due to the high risk of being shot down by Pakistan."&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/india-news/uttar-pradesh-shocker-man-kills-wife-daughters-over-not-wearing-burqa-buries-bodies-at-home-says-police-1765968660507">Uttar Pradesh shocker: Man kills wife, daughters over not wearing Burqa; buries bodies at home, says police</a>&nbsp;This military operation followed Indian airstrikes targeting terrorist infrastructure in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir, during which India claimed to have neutralizsd over 100 terrorists. In every era, the character of warfare changes before the battlefield notices. In South Asia today, that change is unfolding not in the waters of the Arabian Sea, but in the digital ecosystem surrounding it. Pakistan’s recent deployment of AI-generated deepfakes, doctored missile footage, and synthetic naval “victories” marks the arrival of a new and deeply destabilising form of conflict — one in which the mind is targeted before the missile, and perception is shaped long before capability is tested.&nbsp; The most alarming illustration of this shift came not from any ship or submarine, but from a viral video that attempted to impersonate the Chief of the Indian Navy.&nbsp;<h2>When Admirals become targets</h2>&nbsp;The video in question appeared to show India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, criticising the government for restricting naval action and admitting to fabricated operational losses. For those unfamiliar with modern deepfake technology, the clip looked credible at first glance. But a detailed examination by India’s Deepfakes Analysis Unit revealed that while the opening seconds contained real footage, the remainder of the audio was entirely synthetic — an AI-generated clone grafted onto legitimate visuals.&nbsp; This was not mischief. It was a deliberate attempt to simulate a breach in naval cohesion and erode public trust in one of India’s most disciplined institutions.&nbsp;Around the same time, Pakistan-linked digital networks circulated a second manipulated video, this time targeting the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO) — one of the most crucial operational authorities in the Indian Navy. The fake clip suggested internal disagreement over deployment plans during the Pahalgam–Sindoor crisis. It too was later found to be digitally altered.&nbsp; When a nation directs deepfakes at another’s admirals, it is not engaging in trolling. It is engaging in cognitive warfare.&nbsp;<h2>From ships to screens: Pakistan’s ‘AI navy’ emerges</h2>&nbsp;These deepfakes are not isolated incidents. They are part of a systematic trend.&nbsp;Following Pakistan’s latest test of the P-282 ship-launched anti-ship ballistic missile, the official statement was deliberately vague: no ship name, no telemetry, no seeker details, no confirmation of range or speed. The video showed a missile rising into the sky and a distant splash. That was all.&nbsp;Yet immediately after this minimalist announcement, an entire ecosystem of Pakistan-friendly pages — many of which routinely amplify ISPR narratives — began circulating enhanced, exaggerated, and in many cases doctored ASBM videos. These clips claimed Pakistan had demonstrated an “800 km hypersonic strike,” “carrier-kill capability,” and “South Asia’s first ship-fired hypersonic missile.”&nbsp;None of these details came from Pakistan’s military. They came from Pakistan’s informal information warfare proxies, giving the establishment plausible deniability while reaping the benefit of inflated narratives.&nbsp; This is the architecture of Pakistan’s AI Navy: a virtual force built through synthetic media, operating on social networks, designed to compensate for constraints at sea.&nbsp;<h2>Operation Sindoor shows the real balance of power</h2>&nbsp;During the Pahalgam standoff, India launched Operation Sindoor, deploying nearly three dozen ships, including an aircraft carrier group, across the Arabian Sea. Indian destroyers, frigates, submarines and P-8I aircraft demonstrated maritime dominance and operational readiness.&nbsp;Pakistan Navy, by contrast, remained largely confined to Karachi and nearby waters. Public reporting documented propulsion issues and limited availability of several major vessels. Pakistan issued multiple NAVAREA warnings rather than undertaking forward deployments.&nbsp;Yet online, the picture was the opposite.&nbsp;Digitally altered videos circulated showing Indian ships allegedly destroyed, Pakistani missiles hitting moving targets, and simulated engagements designed to portray dramatic Pakistani victories. In the comments sections, Pakistan’s “virtual navy” appeared to overpower India’s real one.&nbsp; This divergence between operational reality and online fiction shows why cognitive warfare is becoming central to Pakistan’s maritime strategy.&nbsp;<h2>Synthetic capability as a substitute for real capability</h2>&nbsp;Pakistan’s real ASBM capability—to the extent publicly known—aligns with a short-range, China-linked coastal missile comparable to the CM-401 system. Its reach is estimated around 290–350 km. This places it in the realm of littoral anti-access capability, not long-range anti-carrier warfare.&nbsp;Yet the absence of official details allowed Pakistan’s digital ecosystem to stretch this modest capability into a grand narrative of technological breakthrough.&nbsp; This dual-track approach—official vagueness coupled with unofficial hype—allows Islamabad to shape perceptions without being accountable for exaggerations. It also places the burden of countering misinformation on the target nation, in this case India.&nbsp; But India did not play that game.&nbsp; The Indian Navy did not respond with theatrics, press conferences, or counterclaims.&nbsp; It responded with posture. It kept sailing.&nbsp; And in any maritime contest, presence is power.&nbsp;<h2>Why this matters for regional stability</h2>&nbsp;Deepfakes targeting naval leadership, combined with realistic-looking doctored strike videos, introduce risks that go far beyond propaganda. Navies rely on decision cycles, command authority, and crisis clarity. When false statements circulate in the name of senior commanders, or when synthetic footage simulates “victories” that never occurred, misinformation can distort escalation dynamics.&nbsp;A fabricated clip of a ship strike could inflame public opinion in Pakistan.A deepfake of an Indian admiral could generate doubt during a crisis.A doctored ASBM launch could embolden decision-makers already operating under pressure.&nbsp; This is why countries across the world—from the EU to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—are treating AI manipulation as a strategic threat.&nbsp;South Asia cannot afford to ignore it.&nbsp;<h2>India’s Task: Defend the seas—and the truth</h2>&nbsp;India’s naval superiority remains unquestioned. The Indian Navy has stronger platforms, deeper surveillance reach, and greater operational confidence than Pakistan’s fleet. India’s naval superiority remains unquestioned. The Indian Navy has stronger platforms, deeper surveillance reach, and greater operational confidence than Pakistan’s fleet. What now requires equal attention is information superiority.

In every era, the character of warfare changes before the battlefield notices. In South Asia today, that change is unfolding not in the waters of the Arabian Sea, but in the digital ecosystem surrounding it. Pakistan’s recent deployment of AI-generated deepfakes, doctored missile footage, and synthetic naval “victories” marks the arrival of a new and deeply destabilising form of conflict — one in which the mind is targeted before the missile, and perception is shaped long before capability is tested. The most alarming illustration of this shift came not from any ship or submarine, but from a viral video that attempted to impersonate the Chief of the Indian Navy. When Admirals become targets The video in question appeared to show India’s Chief of Naval Staff, Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, criticising the government for restricting naval action and admitting to fabricated operational losses. For those unfamiliar with modern deepfake technology, the clip looked credible at first glance. But a detailed examination by India’s Deepfakes Analysis Unit revealed that while the opening seconds contained real footage, the remainder of the audio was entirely synthetic — an AI-generated clone grafted onto legitimate visuals. This was not mischief. It was a deliberate attempt to simulate a breach in naval cohesion and erode public trust in one of India’s most disciplined institutions. Around the same time, Pakistan-linked digital networks circulated a second manipulated video, this time targeting the Director General Naval Operations (DGNO) — one of the most crucial operational authorities in the Indian Navy. The fake clip suggested internal disagreement over deployment plans during the Pahalgam–Sindoor crisis. It too was later found to be digitally altered. When a nation directs deepfakes at another’s admirals, it is not engaging in trolling. It is engaging in cognitive warfare. From ships to screens: Pakistan’s ‘AI navy’ emerges These deepfakes are not isolated incidents. They are part of a systematic trend. Following Pakistan’s latest test of the P-282 ship-launched anti-ship ballistic missile, the official statement was deliberately vague: no ship name, no telemetry, no seeker details, no confirmation of range or speed. The video showed a missile rising into the sky and a distant splash. That was all. Yet immediately after this minimalist announcement, an entire ecosystem of Pakistan-friendly pages — many of which routinely amplify ISPR narratives — began circulating enhanced, exaggerated, and in many cases doctored ASBM videos. These clips claimed Pakistan had demonstrated an “800 km hypersonic strike,” “carrier-kill capability,” and “South Asia’s first ship-fired hypersonic missile.” None of these details came from Pakistan’s military. They came from Pakistan’s informal information warfare proxies, giving the establishment plausible deniability while reaping the benefit of inflated narratives. This is the architecture of Pakistan’s AI Navy: a virtual force built through synthetic media, operating on social networks, designed to compensate for constraints at sea. Operation Sindoor shows the real balance of power During the Pahalgam standoff, India launched Operation Sindoor, deploying nearly three dozen ships, including an aircraft carrier group, across the Arabian Sea. Indian destroyers, frigates, submarines and P-8I aircraft demonstrated maritime dominance and operational readiness. Pakistan Navy, by contrast, remained largely confined to Karachi and nearby waters. Public reporting documented propulsion issues and limited availability of several major vessels. Pakistan issued multiple NAVAREA warnings rather than undertaking forward deployments. Yet online, the picture was the opposite. Digitally altered videos circulated showing Indian ships allegedly destroyed, Pakistani missiles hitting moving targets, and simulated engagements designed to portray dramatic Pakistani victories. In the comments sections, Pakistan’s “virtual navy” appeared to overpower India’s real one. This divergence between operational reality and online fiction shows why cognitive warfare is becoming central to Pakistan’s maritime strategy. Synthetic capability as a substitute for real capability Pakistan’s real ASBM capability—to the extent publicly known—aligns with a short-range, China-linked coastal missile comparable to the CM-401 system. Its reach is estimated around 290–350 km. This places it in the realm of littoral anti-access capability, not long-range anti-carrier warfare. Yet the absence of official details allowed Pakistan’s digital ecosystem to stretch this modest capability into a grand narrative of technological breakthrough. This dual-track approach—official vagueness coupled with unofficial hype—allows Islamabad to shape perceptions without being accountable for exaggerations. It also places the burden of countering misinformation on the target nation, in this case India. But India did not play that game. The Indian Navy did not respond with theatrics, press conferences, or counterclaims. It responded with posture. It kept sailing. And in any maritime contest, presence is power. Why this matters for regional stability Deepfakes targeting naval leadership, combined with realistic-looking doctored strike videos, introduce risks that go far beyond propaganda. Navies rely on decision cycles, command authority, and crisis clarity. When false statements circulate in the name of senior commanders, or when synthetic footage simulates “victories” that never occurred, misinformation can distort escalation dynamics. A fabricated clip of a ship strike could inflame public opinion in Pakistan. A deepfake of an Indian admiral could generate doubt during a crisis. A doctored ASBM launch could embolden decision-makers already operating under pressure. This is why countries across the world—from the EU to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command—are treating AI manipulation as a strategic threat. South Asia cannot afford to ignore it. India’s Task: Defend the seas—and the truth India’s naval superiority remains unquestioned. The Indian Navy has stronger platforms, deeper surveillance reach, and greater operational confidence than Pakistan’s fleet. What now requires equal attention is information superiority—the ability to detect, expose, and neutralise synthetic manipulation before it shapes public or strategic perception. In future crises, the opening salvo may not be a missile launch. It may be a deepfake. And in that moment, the ability to defend narrative integrity will matter as much as the ability to defend the coastline. Last word Pakistan’s turn toward deepfakes and doctored naval videos marks the emergence of a second navy — one that exists not in the Arabian Sea, but in the digital domain. It is this “AI Navy,” not the real one, that Islamabad uses to project strength, mask vulnerabilities and influence public opinion. India must recognise this shift and adapt accordingly. The battles of tomorrow will be fought not only with ships, submarines and aircraft, but with algorithms engineered to deceive. In this new era, the Indian Navy must prepare to command both the seas and the truth. (Commodore (Dr.) Johnson Odakkal is a maritime scholar, strategic affairs analyst, and Indian Navy veteran.)

Navy Chief: Operation Sindoor Has Put Financial Strain on Pakistan

Operation Sindoor is ongoing, according to Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K. Tripathi, as he emphasized on the integrated air defence between services. The operation showcased the Navy's readiness, he said while also discussing India's aircraft carrier plans. He noted the importance of a strong carrier fleet as INS Vikramaditya nears retirement.

Breaking: Operation Sindoor is still ongoing, says Navy Chief Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi

Chief of Naval Staff Admiral Dinesh K Tripathi in Delhi on Tuesday (Dec 2) said that Operation Sindoor was still underway. He said that during Op Sindoor, the deployment of the carrier battle group "forced Pakistani Navy to be in ports &amp; they never ventured out". He noted that the historic military operation by the Indian forces had an impact on the Pakistani economy with "many major shipping companies avoided Pakistani ports and increased the insurance premium". Tripathi revealed that the Indian Navy is heading into the next decade with a sharper edge at sea and a clearer sense of its strategic goals.

But the bigger story, Tripathi said, lies in the Navy's constant operational grind far from home waters. One Indian warship has been stationed in the Gulf of Aden without a break since 2008.<h2>Indian Navy's 17-year-long mission</h2>"We have maintained one ship in the Gulf of Aden continuously since 2008. The ship is relieved on station for anti-piracy duties. To date, 138 ships have been deployed for that, and they have successfully escorted more than 3,700 merchant vessels of all nationalities and crew."He added that since last November, when the Red Sea crisis set off a spike in attacks, the Navy has expanded that presence further. Forty capital ships, along with their helicopters and support assets, have been tasked to keep sea lanes open. "They have ensured safe transit of 152 lakh metric tons of cargo on 376 merchant vessels. To our estimate, it has been valued at more than 6.5 billion US dollars. In a major boost to New Delhi's global standing, India has attained "major power" status on the Asia Power Index-2025, powered by its strong economic growth and military capability based on its performance in Operation Sindoor. The country has secured third place in the world ranking, only behind the United States and China, which stand at first and second place respectively. The annual Asia Power Index measures resources and influence to rank the relative power of states in Asia.&nbsp; As per the latest standings released by the Australia-based think tank Lowy Institute, the top five nations in terms of comprehensive power this year are the United States, China, India, Japan and Russia. The United States has retained its position as the most powerful country in Asia; however, its overall power has declined significantly since the launch of the Asia Power Index in 2018. Meanwhile, India’s western neighbour, Pakistan, did not find a place in the top ten. It ranked at number 16 on the list.&nbsp; Also Read: <a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/defence-ministry-to-seek-20-rise-in-allocation-in-upcoming-budget-report-1764337131263">Defence Ministry to seek 20% rise in allocation in upcoming budget: Report</a>&nbsp;The rankings also pointed out that there remain gaps in India's ambitions and the reality of continued limits on its influence, especially in comparison to its northern neighbour, China. New Delhi stood at the third point with a score of 40 behind the US (80.40) and China (73.5). It has widened its small lead over Japan, with its score rising by 0.9 points in 2025.&nbsp;Other major observations of the rankings are that India stands at the brink of attaining military superpower status if it crosses the score of 40. India was ranked among middle powers in the Asia Power Index-2024 with a comprehensive power score of 38.1, which increased marginally to reach the threshold of a “major power”.&nbsp; Also Read: ‘<a href="https://www.wionews.com/world/-absolutely-no-problem-tejas-is-among-safest-aircraft-in-the-world-hal-chief-after-dubai-crash-1764328481797">Absolutely no problem; Tejas is among safest aircraft in the world’: HAL chief after Dubai crash</a>&nbsp;Moreover, India has also witnessed its first time rise in rankings for economic relationship since the Index began in 2018. Lowly institute in its report stated, “India's economic and military capabilities have both increased in the 2025 edition of the Asia Power Index. Its economy has continued to grow strongly and made small gains in terms of its geopolitical relevance — defined in terms of international leverage, connectivity, and technology. The annual Asia Power Index measures resources and influence to rank the relative power of states in Asia. As per the latest standings released by the Australia-based think tank Lowy Institute, the top five nations in terms of comprehensive power this year are the United States, China, India, Japan and Russia. The United States has retained its position as the most powerful country in Asia; however, its overall power has declined significantly since the launch of the Asia Power Index in 2018. Meanwhile, India’s western neighbour, Pakistan, did not find a place in the top ten. It ranked at number 16 on the list. New Delhi stood at the third point with a score of 40 behind the US (80.40) and China (73.5). It has widened its small lead over Japan, with its score rising by 0.9 points in 2025. Other major observations of the rankings are that India stands at the brink of attaining military superpower status if it crosses the score of 40. India was ranked among middle powers in the Asia Power Index-2024 with a comprehensive power score of 38.1, which increased marginally to reach the threshold of a “major power”. Its economy has continued to grow strongly and made small gains in terms of its geopolitical relevance — defined in terms of international leverage, connectivity, and technology. India's military capability has also improved steadily.” Impact of Operation Sindoor The Index attributed India's rise in military capability to Operation Sindoor, which was launched on May 7, 2025, in the wake of the Pahalgam terror attack in Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed 26 lives, mostly tourists. The chief of the Indian Army Staff, General Upendra Dwivedi, called the Operation Sindoor on Saturday (Nov 22) a “trusted orchestra" in which Indian forces played a “synergistic role". He also highlighted the fact that the operation targeted the nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied-Kashmir (PoK) in just 22 minutes. A US advisory body's latest report has alleged that China carried out an Artificial Intelligence (AI)-driven “disinformation campaign" after India's Operation Sindoor in May. As per the US-China Economic and Security Review Commission's report on Wednesday (Nov 19), Beijing used fake images and social media accounts to influence global defence perceptions for Rafale fighter jets. Operation Sindoor was India's retaliation against the April 22 Pahalgam terrorist attack in Jammu and Kashmir. Under the operation, India targeted nine terror sites in Pakistan and Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK).The Commission stated that China allegedly deployed “fake social media accounts to propagate AI images of supposed ‘debris’ from planes," portraying Indian and French aircraft as having been destroyed by Chinese systems.

Preliminary findings of the investigation into the deadly blast near Delhi’s Red Fort on Monday (Nov 10) reportedly suggested that ammonium nitrate, fuel oil, and detonators may have been used in the explosion that killed at least eight and injured 20. Reports, citing sources, also suggested a possible link between the blast and the terror module bust in Faridabad, where nearly 3,000 kg of IED-making material was seized. Although final forensic reports are awaited. The investigation into the blast has been handed over to the National Investigation Agency.&nbsp;Hours before the blast, authorities recovered about 2,900 kg of IED-making material following a multi-state raid by Jammu and Kashmir Police. The vehicle had a Haryana registration number. The first owner of the car, identified as Mohd Salman, has been detained by the police. Salman reportedly sold to vehicle to a person in Okhla, who then sold it to a resident of Ambala. The car was then sold to Dr Umar from Pulwama, Jammu and Kashmir. The police have detained around three individuals in Pulwama for questioning in the matter.

Top official sources have said that a Faridabad-based sleeper module that was activated by Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) after Operation Sindoor has been busted.
