After a full week of controversy, the world's biggest tennis star Novak Djokovic is challenging the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa. The hearing of the case is currently underway and, here is a rundown of all the latest updates.

Novak Djokovic detention in Australia has the world divided

Novak Djokovic was granted the permission to be released immediately from detention by the judge on Monday (January 10). The Serbian won a court battle against the cancellation of his Australian visa and the judge overturned his deportation orders by saying that the government's decision was 'unreasonable' and also ordered the federal government to pay all the legal costs for Djokovic's stay in Melbourne.

The top-ranked tennis star left his immigration hotel immediately after the court hearing. For the unversed, he was detained after his visa was cancelled on arrival in Melbourne for the Australian Open 2022. He had an exemption from the Victorian government for Covid vaccination, however, it was deemed unsatisfactory after which he was in detention.

It is still unclear whether Djokovic will participate in the year's first-ever Grand Slam, i.e. the Aus Open, and if the government will continue legal proceedings against him. Australia's immigration minister and govt lawyer is now considering re-cancelling Djokovic's visa under the country's immigration laws, which gives him immense power to cancel visas under any condition. If this happens, Djokovic will be banned from entering the country for three long years.

Australia: World number 1 tennis star locked in a dispute over vaccination status

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic said he was 'pleased and grateful' after winning a court case in Australia against the cancellation of his visa by the authorities in the country. Djokovic had headed Down Under to take part in the Australian Open 2022 after being granted a medical exemption as he had refused to reveal the status of his COVID-19 vaccination.

However, the authorities deemed his medical exemption invalid and sent him into detention in a quarantine facility in Melbourne. The tennis star spent five days in the hotel before winning a court case to have the decision of his visa cancellation revoked during a hearing at the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia.

Judge Anthony Kelly passed the decision in his favour, ordering his immediate release from detention. After being released, Djokovic took to Twitter to rejoice at his victory and assured his supporters that he intends to stay in Melbourne and continue his bid to defend his Australian Open title in the tournament which gets underway from January 17.

'Pleased and grateful': Novak Djokovic tweets after his visa cancellation is revoked ahead of Australian Open

On Monday (January 10), the World number 1 tennis player Novak Djokovic breathed a huge sigh of relief when the court ordered his immediate release from the immigration centre ahead of the Australian Open, which commences on January 17.

Ahead of the calendar year's first Grand Slam, Djokovic got involved in a huge controversy when he announced that he is heading for Melbourne with an exemption received from the Victorian government, with regard to Covid vaccination, to play the Aus Open. The Serbian's stance on Covid vaccination remains known to all, however, his exemption was deemed unsatisfactory by the authorities on his arrival in Australia, on Wednesday (January 5), which put him in a detention centre. Thus, the court's decision was due to come on Monday and it has favoured the tennis superstar to remain in the country and bid for his 21st Grand Slam title overall.

On hearing the court's decision, Djokovic's competitor and world number 6 Rafael Nadal also reacted to the new developments. "Whether or not I agree with Djokovic on some things, justice has spoken and has said that he has the right to participate in the Australian Open and I think it is the fairest decision to do so, if it has been resolved that way. I wish him the best of luck," Nadal told Spanish radio Onda Cero on Monday.

He added, "On a personal level, I`d much rather he didn`t play," Nadal said, laughing along with interviewer. "It`s sports, many interests move around it, on a general level, at an economic, advertising level. Everything is much better when the best can be playing," Nadal said, before defending the Covid vaccination once again. He concluded by saying, "The most important institutions in the world say that the vaccine is the way to stop this pandemic and the disaster that we have been living for the last 20 months."

Rafael Nadal reacts as Australian judge orders Djokovic's release from detention ahead of Aus Open

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic's hopes of playing in the upcoming Australian Open recieved a major boost on Monday (January 10) as the world no.1 tennis player won the court case regarding his appeal against deportation from Australia. Djokovic, who was detained by the Australian border security officials, is all set to be moved from the quarantine hotel in Melbourne after a judge ordered his immediate release from detention.

Judge Anthony Kelly passed his judgement in the favour of Djokovic, who has spent five days in detention in Melbourne after his visa was revoked by the authorities last week. Djokovic had headed Down Under to take part in the Australian Open after being granted a 'medical exemption' as he refuses to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status. Djokovic's lawyers had revealed his medical exemption had been granted as he had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year.

Djokovic was held up by the Australian border officials at the Melbourne airport last week where he was told he did not meet the criteria for medical exemption before being sent into detention. The world no.1 tennis player was quick to assemble his team and take up the legal route in a bid to ensure he gets to take part in the tournament.

It turned out to be a shock defeat for the Australian government in the case on Monday after judge Kelly ordered Djokovic to be released. However, Australian immigration minister Alex Hawk may try to utilise his executive powers to go against the court's decision.

"I'm instructed (the minister) will consider whether to exercise a personal power of cancellation," Hawke was quoted as saying by AFP.

Besides providing the proof for his positive COVID-19 test in December last year, Djokovic's lawyers also presented a letter in their court filings which the tennis star had recieved from Tennis Australia's chief medical officer on 30 December stating that he had been granted 'medical exemption' on the grounds that he had recently recovered from the infection.

While there were allegations of Djokovic being held captive in detention, the Australian government had maintained that the tennis superstar was free to leave the country whenever he wanted. However, Djokovic decided to stay and fight a legal battle as he looks keen on defending his Australian Open title in a bid to go above Roger Federer and rafael Nadal by winning his 21st Grand Slam title.

Novak Djokovic wins court case, Australian judge orders tennis star's release from detention

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic won his legal appeal against the cancellation of his visa by the Australian government ahead of the Australian Open tournament. Djokovic's legal team had appealed against the decision to cancel his visa despite the world no.1 men's singles player having been granted a medical exemption to take part in the competition.

Djokovic was questioned by the Australian border officials upon landing at the Melbourne airport last week before being sent into detention. He spent four days in an immigration quarantine facility in Melbourne before winning the legal battle on Monday when judge Anthony Kelly passed the decision in his favour.

The Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia revoked the decision to cancel Djokovic's visa and ordered his release from detention immediately with his passport and "personal effects". While the tennis star has been set free from quarantine, the Australian government has expressed its readiness to re-cancel his visa and redetain Djokovic.

Australian government ready to re-cancel visa:

After the judge ruled out the decision in Djokovic's favour, Christopher Tran - the lawyer who is representing the Australian government in the case, informed that the country's minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs might consider exercising his personal power of cancellation.

Judge Kelly said he would like to be kept informed if the legal battle between the two parties was set to drag on despite him ordering the government to revoke the cancellation of Djokovic's visa. Djokovic's win in the case is a huge setback for the Australian government, which has imposed strict COVID-19 rules and vaccination guidelines in a bid to control the spread of the virus in the country.

Australian government ready to re-cancel Novak Djokovic's visa after court orders tennis star's release

Australia`s efforts to let the media and public watch tennis superstar Novak Djokovic`s court appeal against his visa cancellation descended into farce on Monday as pranksters hijacked the internet links to stream loud music and porn.

Due to coronavirus restrictions, the hearing was conducted virtually, through audio visual links between the judge`s chambers and lawyers for the government and Djokovic.

Minutes before proceedings were due to begin, journalists clicked on a just-expired Microsoft Teams link supplied by the court, unaware that the court had replaced the link. Expecting to see proceedings in real time, they were instead confronted with pornographic images.

News Corp`s head of digital sport, Emily Benammar, observed wryly that the online intruders had at least supplied a missing ingredient in what had become one of Australia`s biggest court room dramas of recent years.

"Porn: the one thing this whole Djokovic saga had been missing," Benammar said in a tweet.

Australian journalist Sarah Dankert described the ensuing chaos, including some joker groaning "Nole", a diminutive for Novak.
"While there`s a public broadcast, there`s an old teams link that is still working for the Djokovic case and the court official is gone after having trouble with mute all.

"We`ve had techno blasting, giggling, shouting and someone is just saying Nole repeatedly in a pained voice."
That link, which had been shared widely on social media in the days prior, had been replaced by a new link, which the court sent around to media. And when the hearing was scheduled to begin, at 10 a.m., the new link led to a website which had crashed due to over-visitation.

The trouble didn`t end there. Once the link was back up and running, the court proceedings were accidentally interrupted by a member of the public, who joined the live stream but was not on mute. "We`re in," the person said, prompting a rebuke from Judge Anthony Kelly.

"Can I ask whoever is on screen to mute themselves... the only people who should be online with their microphones are those who are making submissions to the court," Judge Kelly said.

Though some outlets could watch the federal court hearing online, most had to rely on a re-broadcast by a tennis podcast which supplied commentary over the voices of lawyers.

A court spokesman was not immediately available for comment, but apologised for the technical difficulties in a email to media.
Four hours into the hearing, the court sent around a third link - to its own YouTube channel - just in time for a belated lunch break.

After stop-start adjournments lasting three hours, at 5:12 p.m., the link worked, just in time for the final ruling: Djokovic should be free to enter the country.

After a week-long saga, the world's biggest tennis superstar Novak Djokovic has now won his appeal against being deported from Australia after the government revoked his visa as soon as he had landed in Australia last week. Now in the latest, an Australian judge has ruled in favor of Djokovic.

Australia: Novak Djokovic wins court case challenging deportation

Australian authorities scrambled on Sunday to file a legal defence of their decision to bar entry to tennis world number one Novak Djokovic over his COVID-19 vaccination status, as the Serbian superstar spent his fourth day in immigration detention.

Djokovic was hoping to win his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open, starting next week, but instead of training has been confined to a hotel used to accommodate asylum seekers. He is challenging the decision to cancel his visa after being stopped on arrival at Melbourne Airport early on Thursday.

A vocal opponent of vaccine mandates, Djokovic had declined to reveal his vaccination status or reason for seeking a medical exemption from Australia`s vaccine rules. He broke his silence on Saturday with a legal challenge saying he had been granted an exemption due to contracting - and recovering from - the virus in December.

The Melbourne drama has rocked world tennis, caused tensions between Serbia and Australia and become a flashpoint for opponents of vaccine mandates around the world.

Australia says its health department notified tournament organising body Tennis Australia in November that a recent COVID-19 infection was not necessarily grounds for exemption in the country, as it is elsewhere. Djokovic`s lawsuit says the Department of Home Affairs wrote to him this month to say he had satisfied the requirements to enter the country.

Home Affairs, due to file its defence on Sunday, requested an extension of the matter`s first hearing from Monday to Wednesday, a court representative told Reuters. The application was rejected, according to a ruling on the federal court`s website.

Djokovic`s lawyers will have up to two hours to present their case from 10 a.m. (0300 GMT) on Monday, while the government department gets two hours to present its defence from 3 p.m., the Federal Circuit and Family Court ruled.

A Home Affairs spokesperson was not immediately available for comment about its legal defence.

Health Minister Greg Hunt, asked about the furore at a media conference on Sunday, declined to comment since it was before the court, but noted that several other people involved in the tournament had their visas revoked.

Finance Minister Simon Birmingham, asked about the matter on Channel 9 television, said without referring directly to Djokovic that "there`s a clear difference between visas and entry requirements" and "entry requirements ... sit over and above the visa conditions".

Czech player Renata Voracova, who was detained in the same detention hotel as Djokovic and had her visa revoked after issues with her vaccine exemption, left the country without challenging her status, the Czech Foreign Ministry said.

Djokovic`s situation has drawn an unlikely crowd to the modest Melbourne hotel which, until this month, was best known for media reports about asylum seeker occupants claiming they were served food containing maggots.

Anti-vaccine protesters, refugee advocates and Djokovic fans have converged outside the building, which is under police guard.

"The detention of Novak Djokovic has shone a global spotlight on the Park Hotel prison, but for the 36 refugees detained there indefinitely, it`s not a game," said David Glanz, a spokesman for advocacy group Refugee Action Collective, in a statement, as a planned protest got underway.

"We fear that long after Djokovic is back on the lucrative global tennis circuit, those men will still be in detention – many of them in their ninth year of being held by the Australian government."

Home Affairs was not immediately available to respond to the protesters` claims. Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic said the player had been given gluten-free food, tools to exercise and a SIM card to stay in contact with the outside world.
"It`s a positive tone from the Australian side. The Serbian government is ready to provide all the guarantees necessary for Novak to be allowed to enter Australia, the Serbian president is also involved," Brnabic said.

Australia rushes to file defence of Novak Djokovic ban as court battle looms

The Australian government had not given tennis star Novak Djokovic an assurance that a medical exemption that he said he had to enter Australia without a COVID-19 vaccination would be accepted, government lawyers said in a court filing on Sunday.

The filing ahead of a court hearing on Monday was in defence of the government`s decision to bar entry to the world number one player over his COVID-19 vaccination status.

Djokovic is hoping to win his 21st Grand Slam at the Australian Open, starting in Melbourne on Jan. 17. Himself a vocal opponent of vaccine mandates, Djokovic had declined to reveal his vaccination status or reason for seeking a medical exemption from Australia`s vaccination rules. But his legal team said in a filing to the court on Saturday that the player had been granted an exemption due to having had the virus in December.

Djokovic`s legal team said he had the necessary permissions to enter Australia, including an assessment from the Department of Home Affairs that responses on his travel declaration form indicated he met the conditions for quarantine-free arrival. The government disputed this.

"This is because there is no such thing as an assurance of entry by a non-citizen into Australia. Rather, there are criteria and conditions for entry, and reasons for refusal or cancellation of a visa," the government`s filing said.

It said the department`s email was not an assurance "that his so-called `medical exemption` would be accepted", and his responses could be questioned and verified on his arrival.
The government also challenged Djokovic`s claim for a medical exemption on the basis he had contracted COVID-19 and had recovered two weeks later.

Djokovic is currently in detention in Australia as he prepares to fight a legal battle against the government and the authorities after his visa was cancelled upon landing in the country on Wednesday.

Djokovic had landed in Australia on Wednesday night to take part in the upcoming Australian Open and was looking forward to defending his title. However, earlier this week Djokovic announced he was heading Down Under to play in the Australian Open after being granted a medical exemption. His visa was revoked in Melbourne as Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison stated that 'rules are rules' for everyone.

On Saturday, Djokovic's lawyers in their court filing said the tennis star had obtained a medical exemption from the vaccination rules of the country before travelling to Australia.

The filing stated that Djokovic had contracted COVID-19 on December 16, 2021, and "had not had a fever or respiratory symptoms" from the infection. He was granted a medical exemption because he tested positive for the virus in December.

After Novak Djokovic's detention in Australia, another tennis player has been held over visa issues ahead of the Australian Open 2022. Czech women's player Renata Voracova was detained by authorities on Friday (January 7) over visa disputes. The 38-year-old Voracova reacted to the situation as she said it's like a "prison".

"They bring me food and there's a guard in the corridor. You have to report, everything is rationed. I feel a bit like in prison," added Voracova, labelling the hotel as "a better dormitory".

'Feel a bit like in prison': Amid Novak Djokovic row, another tennis player held over visa issues in Australia

Australian border agents held tennis superstar Novak Djokovic for eight hours at Melbourne airport, mostly incommunicado, before cancelling his visa and sending him to a detention centre, his lawyers said Saturday.

Djokovic secured a Covid-19 vaccine exemption from Tennis Australia and the Australian government because he had tested positive for the virus in December, which should have qualified him for entry, the lawyers argued.

"The date of the first positive Covid PCR test was recorded on 16 December 2021," his legal team said in a 32-page submission ahead of a federal court hearing Monday to appeal the visa decision.

Djokovic, who touched down in Melbourne on Wednesday night after a 25-hour trip via Dubai, had asked for a time to rest and consult his lawyers the following morning, his lawyers said.

But after a border official initially agreed, his superiors successfully pressured Djokovic to allow them to take an immediate decision on his visa, the lawyers said.

Foreigners are still mostly banned from travel to Australia, and those granted entry must be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption.

The tennis star has been held since Thursday morning in a Melbourne detention centre "notwithstanding his requests to be moved" to another facility to train for the Australian Open, they added.

Although Djokovic has won a legal reprieve from deportation, it is unclear whether he will play in the January 17-30 tournament.

If successful, he will be gunning for a 10th Australian Open crown and a record 21st Grand Slam title -- a milestone that Spanish great Rafael Nadal is also chasing.

In an internal video leaked Saturday, Tennis Australia chief Craig Tiley said his organisation had done "everything they possibly could".

- 'Unbelievable job' -

"There is a lot... of blaming going on but I can assure you our team has done an unbelievable job," he said in a video published by the Sunday Herald Sun newspaper.

A second tennis player who was headed to the tournament -- Czech doubles specialist Renata Voracova -- had her visa cancelled after initially being allowed into the country, her government has confirmed.

She was also placed in the Melbourne centre, and is widely believed to have left the facility on Saturday. AFP photo and video images showed a woman who appeared to be Voracova in a vehicle leaving the centre.

"They bring me food and there's a guard in the corridor... I feel a bit like in prison," 38-year-old Voracova told Czech media before her departure.

Djokovic, an outspoken vaccine sceptic, thanked fans for their support on Instagram.

"Thank you to people around the world for your continuous support. I can feel it and it is greatly appreciated," the 34-year-old nine-time Australian Open champion said.

More than 100 fans and anti-vaccine protesters, who were banging drums and chanting "Novak", rallied outside the Melbourne immigration holding facility on Saturday.

- 'Making a stand' -

At an anti-vaccine rally attended by hundreds of people in another part of the city, some voiced support for Djokovic.

"I don't want to see my grandchildren vaccinated," said Margaret Beacham, a 67-year-old former primary school teacher.

"Novak is making a stand and it's a worldwide opportunity for him to say something about vaccination status and how ridiculous it is."

As much of the country tightened restrictions to battle an Omicron-fuelled wave, the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is the capital, posted a daily record of 51,356 cases Saturday.

The centre holding Djokovic, previously the Park Hotel and officially known as an "alternative place of detention", houses about 32 migrants trapped in Australia's hardline immigration system -- some for years.

Detainees cannot leave the hotel and nobody is allowed in or out except staff.

The five-storey centre gained notoriety last year when a fire forced migrants to be evacuated, and maggots were allegedly found in the food.

Djokovic's family have said the hotel is "dirty".

Australian star Nick Kyrgios, who has feuded with Djokovic in the past, praised him in a news conference Saturday.

"If he's allowed to play the Australian Open, I don't want any bar of him. I reckon he's going to be pissed off," Kyrgios said in Sydney ahead of a warm-up tournament before the Australian Open.

"You don't become a great champion like that without being able to overcome some adversity like this."

- 'Rules are rules' -

Djokovic's detention has sparked international scrutiny, with the Serbian government demanding explanations.

"Djokovic is not a criminal, terrorist or illegal migrant, but was treated that way by the Australian authorities which causes an understandable indignation of his fans and citizens of Serbia," a foreign ministry statement said.

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison has defended revoking Djokovic's visa.

"Rules are rules and there are no special cases," he said.

Judge Anthony Kelly warned the star's lawyers in a hearing Thursday that justice would move at its own pace through all necessary appeals.

"The tail won't be wagging the dog here," he said.

"I don't want to see my grandchildren vaccinated," said Margaret Beacham, a 67-year-old former primary school teacher. "Novak is making a stand and it's a worldwide opportunity for him to say something about vaccination status and how ridiculous it is." As much of the country tightened restrictions to battle an Omicron-fuelled wave, the state of Victoria, where Melbourne is the capital, posted a daily record of 51,356 cases Saturday. "You don't become a great champion like that without being able to overcome some adversity like this." "Djokovic is not a criminal, terrorist or illegal migrant, but was treated that way by the Australian authorities which causes an understandable indignation of his fans and citizens of Serbia," a foreign ministry statement said.

Mostly incommunicado, border agents held Novak Djokovic for eight hours in Melbourne, says lawyers

Novak Djokovic has spent three days in immigration detention in a hotel in Melbourne after his visa was revoked on arrival in Australia ahead of the Australian Open. Djokovic, who has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status ahead of the tournament, had earlier this week announced that he was heading Down Under to play after being granted a 'medical exemption'.

However, the world no.1 tennis player's claim for medical exemption was rejected by the border officials in Melbourne on Wednesday night before he was placed in isolation in a hotel in Melbourne. Djokovic had last year expressed his reservations about taking part in the Australian Open this month as he had remained silent on his vaccination status.

The Australian Open rules state that all players who are to take part in the tournament along with the fans attending the matches should be vaccinated against coronavirus. However, those who are unvaccinated can obtain an exemption on the basis of medical grounds. The exemption can be granted only by an 'independent panel of medical experts'.

Djokovic and his legal team has claimed the tennis star had his medical exemption approved from two independent panels. Djokovic's lawyers revealed the tennis player had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year and thus was eligible for a medical exemption as he could not have been vaccinated for at least the next six months after contracting the virus.

What are the circumstances based on which a medical exemption can be granted?

A medical exemption can be granted in the case of someone dealing with inflammatory cardiac illness in the last three months, or if someone has tested positive for COVID-19 in the last six months in which case the vaccine can't be administered, or if someone is undergoing major surgery, or if someone has suffered serious effects from COVID-19 vaccination in the past.

Those with mental and physical developmental disorders are also eligible to be exempted from the mandatory vaccination rules.

Why was Novak Djokovic granted a medical exemption?

Djokovic's lawyers on Saturday stated in their 35-page document lodged in the Federal court of Australia that the Serbian ace had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year. The documents showed that he had tested positive on December 16 and was free of any symptoms for three days by December 30. He was thus granted a medical exemption on the basis that he had recently recovered from COVID-19 and was not eligible to get vaccinated for at least the next six months.

Djokovic's legal team have also presented proof of a letter that the tennis player had recieved from the Department of Home Affairs confirming that he met all the requirements for a quarantine-free arrival in Australia. However, his visa was torn apart upon arrival as his exemption was deemed invalid.

What next for Novak Djokovic in Australia?

Djokovic has decided to extend his stay in Australia and fight a legal battle against the authorities. He has challenged the decision to revoke his visa and is prepared to drag the authorities to the court to ensure he gets to defend his Australian Open title when the tournament gets underway from January 17.

Contrary to the claims that he has been held captive in a Melbourne hotel, the Australian government has maintained the Serbian player is free to leave the country at any point in time. However, it's Djokovic's decision to stay on and fight for what he believes is unfair against him as he had all pre-required approvals before travelling to the country.

The case is Djokovic V Minister for Home Affairs will be heard in court on Monday (January 10) as Djokovic's legal team continues its bid to challenge the decision to rekove the tennis star's visa despite him having 'valid visa' and 'medical exemption' - a letter from Tennis Australia`s Chief Medical Officer which permitted him entry into the country despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic, a ten-time Australian Open champion is currently gunning for his 21st major title which will see him go past the legendary Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal. Djokovic is currently tied with Federer and Nadal, who have won 20 Grand Slams each.

Australian Open: Novak Djokovic's visa to enter country cancelled, PM Scott Morrison says 'rules are rules'

There has been a lot happening in tennis ahead of the Australian Open 2022. Before the first Grand Slam of the calendar year, world number 1 Novak Djokovic has made the headlines for all the wrong reasons. The Serbian's apprehensions regarding the Covid-19 vaccination isn't unknown. As per the rules, every player has to be double vaccinated to participate in the Aus Open. Hence, Djokovic had announced earlier this week that he has got exemption to participate in the showpiece event.

However, the Serb was denied entry in Australia after the country's Prime Minister Scott Morrison revealed that his visa has been cancelled as 'rules are rules' for one and all. Thus, the 34-year-old superstar tennis player was taken to a government detention hotel, on Wednesday (January 5), after being stopped at the airport as the Australian Federal Border Force officials claimed that he wasn't able to justify the grounds for his exemption (granted by the Victorian government). Despite a legal action from Djokovic's end, the state lawyer Christopher Tran has made it clear that Australia won't deport him before a final court hearing, on Monday (January 10).

Thus, Rafael Nadal has spoken at length on Djokovic's Aus Open saga. In a press conference, the Spaniard said, "From my point of view, that's the only thing that I can say is I believe in what the people who knows about medicine says, and if the people says that we need to get vaccinated, we need to get the vaccine. That's my point of view."

"I went through the COVID. I have been vaccinated twice. If you do this, you don't have any problem to play here. That's the only clear thing."

The 35-year-old Nadal further asserted, "The only for me clear thing is if you are vaccinated, you can play in the Australian Open and everywhere, and the world in my opinion have been suffering enough to not follow the rules."

'Feel sorry for him but he .....': Rafael Nadal opines on Novak Djokovic's Australian Open 2022 saga

Novak Djokovic has been trending on social media for the past two days the outrage and criticism have been pouring from the internet against the unfair medical exemption.

Novak Djokovic & controversial chain of events

World no.1 Novak Djokovic's detention by the Australian authorities has left his fans around the world angry and disappointed. Many have slammed the Australian government for the treatment rendered to the tennis superstar, who had headed Down Under in a bid to defend his title at the upcoming Australian Open 2022.

However, Djokovic's visa was revoked by the authorities in Melbourne and he was later sent to an immigration detention hotel. Djokovic, who has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status, had come to Australia after being granted a medical exemption.

However, his visa which was obtained on the grounds of the medical exemption was cancelled due to Australia's strict vaccination requirements. Djokovic, who had last year maintained he might not take part in the Australian Open due to the strict rules regarding players' vaccination, had earlier this week confirmed he was heading Down Under after being granted a medical exemption.

Serbian journalist Saša Ozmo, who works for Sport Klub Serbia shared his views on the raging controversy during an interaction with WION from Belgrade. Ozmo slammed the Australian government and authorities for the miscommunication and the unfair treatment handed out to the tennis star.

"I think it is a complete disgrace the way Australian authorities have treated him. Because it is absolutely not his fault, the miscommunication of the different levels of power in Australia between the state and the federal government, and tennis Australia," Ozmo told WION.

"If he was not granted an exemption, he would have never boarded the plane. But upon his arrival, he was placed in isolation. He is in a detention hotel. That is not the way to treat anyone, not someone who is a prominent figure in Australia as well having won the Australian Open nine times," he explained.

When asked about the support for Djokovic in Serbia, Ozmo said not just the Serbian fans and public but the tennis superstar's fans across the globe feel that he didn't deserve the kind of treatment that he has been subjected to by the Australian government.

"Not just people in Serbia but millions of Djokovic's fans around the world are hugely disappointed with this treatment. People don't think he deserves this. I don't think he deserves this," said Ozmo.

'It's a disgrace, absolutely not Novak's fault': Serbian journalist slams Australia for detaining Djokovic

Tennis world No. 1 Novak Djokovic was joined in Australian immigration detention by Czech women`s player Renata Voracova on Friday in a row over COVID-19 vaccines that could scupper the Serbian`s shot at a record-breaking 21st Grand Slam. Both players were kept at the modest Park Hotel in inner-city Melbourne, where scores of asylum seekers are also housed behind grey walls and locked windows.

Unlike Djokovic, whose determination to resist deportation and play in the Australian Open has rallied his homeland, 81st-ranked Voracova planned to leave after being caught in similar circumstances, the Czech Foreign Ministry said in a statement.

"Renata Voracova decided to drop out of the tournament due to limited possibilities for training and to leave Australia," it said, adding that it had made a diplomatic protest and that several other players were caught in the same situation. Djokovic, who opposes mandatory vaccinations and was widely criticised in 2020 for hosting a tournament as the pandemic was first raging, was held at the airport on Wednesday. Authorities revoked a visa granted on the basis of a medical exemption from Australia`s strict vaccination requirements.

The Australian Border Force (ABF) said on Friday that one person had voluntarily left Australia while a third person`s visa had also been cancelled. It did not give names. The initial decision to grant Djokovic entry outraged many in Australia, which is battling its worst surge of infections and where the adult vaccination rate is more than 90%.

Canberra rejected on Friday suggestions by Serbian supporters, including Djokovic`s family, that he was a prisoner. "He is free to leave at any time that he chooses," Home Affairs Minister Karen Andrews told reporters.

Djokovic`s lawyers won legal approval for him to remain until a full court hearing against the federal government on Monday. That should reveal more details about the exemption granted to Djokovic and the documentation he provided at the border to support it.
The Australian Open begins on Jan. 17, but the multi-millionaire superstar sportsman is constrained from training as he sits in a hotel where one Iranian detainee said he had found maggots and mould in the bread.

ANTI-VAXX HERO

Hailed as a hero online by anti-vaccination campaigners, Djokovic`s plight drew a mixed response from his peers.
Former World No. 1 Boris Becker, who has coached Djokovic, said he was making a big mistake with his anti-vaccination stance. "It is one that threatens what remains of his career and his chance to cement himself as the greatest player of all time," Becker wrote in the Daily Mail newspaper.

Spain`s Rafael Nadal, who like Djokovic has won 20 Grand Slams, said he felt sorry for his rival "but at the same time, he knew the conditions since a lot of months ago".

Australia`s Nick Kyrgios said he supported vaccination "but how we are handling Novak`s situation is bad, really bad".

The Age newspaper reported that the exemption was because he had contracted COVID-19 in the past six months.

Gravitas: 'Rules are Rules': Australia bars Novak Djokovic from Australian Open

Novak Djokovic has received support from one of his fiercest critics with Nick Kyrgios criticizing the way the world number one has been treated in Australia and saying authorities must do better for "one of our great champions".

Djokovic, who has won a record nine Australian Open titles, was detained at the Melbourne airport on Wednesday evening and his entry visa, supported by an medical exemption from the country`s vaccination requirements, was revoked. Federal Border Force officials at the airport said Djokovic was unable to justify the grounds for his exemption.

Chasing a men`s record 21st Grand Slam, Djokovic is holed up in immigration detention as his lawyers battle to secure his release to play in the Australian Open and be exempt from strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements.
Kyrgios, who labelled Djokovic a "tool" after the Serb sought to improve quarantine conditions for players ahead of last year`s Grand Slam, said the situation had been handled poorly.

"Look I definitely believe in taking action, I got vaccinated because of others and for my mum`s health, but how we are handling Novak`s situation is bad, really bad," tweeted Kyrgios.
"Like these memes, headlines, this is one of our great champions but at the end of the day, he is human. Do better."
American player John Isner said Djokovic had followed all rules and did not deserve to be treated this way.

"What Novak is going through right now is not right," Isner said on Twitter. "There`s no justification for the treatment he`s receiving ... This is such a shame." Former U.S. Open champion Marin Cilic hoped the situation would be quickly resolved and that the whole episode was not good for the sport.

"Definitely it`s not a great picture for tennis," Cilic told reporters in Adelaide on Friday. The Professional Tennis Players Association (PTPA), the breakaway players` body launched by Djokovic in 2020, said in a statement that they were in close contact with him.

Djokovic has consistently refused to disclose his vaccination status while publicly criticising mandatory vaccines. Rafa Nadal, who is also in the hunt for a 21st Grand Slam title at Melbourne Park, was among those who pointed out the Serb knew for months he could potentially face problems if he arrived without being vaccinated against COVID-19.

German tennis great Boris Becker, who coached Djokovic to six majors, urged him to get vaccinated.

Becker was, however, unsure if Djokovic would change his mind.

Nick Kyrgios reacts to Novak Djokovic's treatment, says Australia must 'do better'

Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison turned commentator during the third day's play of the ongoing fourth Ashes Test between Australia and England at the Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney on Friday (January 07). Morrison was spotted in the commentary box with the likes of former Australian cricketer Adam Gilchrist and former England cricketer Isa Guha.

Morrison's surprise presence at the commentary box during the 4th Ashes Test hasn't gone down well with some fans of tennis star Novak Djokovic. Amid raging controversy over Djokovic's detention in Melbourne, Morrison's actions have invited criticism yet again on social media.

Djokovic had announced he was heading Down Under to defend his Australian Open title after being granted a medical exemption as he had refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status.

However, the strict COVID-19 guidelines and the vaccination rules in Australia meant the tennis star was detained. It is not known on what grounds was Djokovic handed a medical exemption as the tennis star prepares to fight a legal battle in Australia.

The Australian government had earlier stressed that the players taking part in the Australian Open should all be double vaccinated as the country continues to deal with rapid surging cases of COVID-19 and lockdowns across the nation.

Amid Djokovic's detention controversy, Aussie PM Scott Morrison turns commentator during Ashes - WATCH

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic's visa was cancelled upon arrival in Australia on Thursday (January 06) before he was sent into detention by the authorities. Djokovic had arrived Down Under to take part in the Australian Open tournament after obtaining a medical exemption as he has refused to reveal his COVID-19 vaccination status.

Djokovic had earlier maintained that his participation in the Australian Open remained uncertain due to the country's strict guidelines regarding players' vaccination status. However, the world no.1 had earlier this week taken to social media to confirm that he will be defending his Australian Open title after being granted a medical exemption.

Djokovic was denied entry into the country and sent into detention on his arrival at the Melbourne airport. While the 34-year-old had not disclosed the grounds of his medical exemption, he has refused to reveal details of his vaccination status. As the tennis star prepares for a legal battle in Australia after being detained, social media has mixed reactions to the whole saga.

While Djokovic's fans from around the globe have come together to criticise the Australian government for 'unfairly' treating the world no.1 tennis star, others have been having fun at his expense. Social media was flooded with memes depicting the lighter side of the controversy.
