Australia has cancelled Tennis star Novak Djokovic's visa for the second time. The World no. 1 will be moved to immigration detention in all likelihood. Will Djokovic be deported? Or will he defend his Australian Open title? Palki Sharma brings you a report.

Gravitas: Double Fault: Australia cancels Djokovic's visa for second time

Novak Djokovic won his first legal round against Australian authorities who want to deport him. But the world tennis No. 1 now faces a formidable challenge on Sunday in his second round as he takes on what some describe as the God-like powers of the immigration minister on questions of visas and public interest.

Djokovic won his court appeal this week against a border official's decision to cancel his visa. He won over procedural errors related to Australia's confusing COVID-19 vaccination regulations.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's intervention on Friday to cancel the visa a second time for what Djokovic's lawyers describe as ?radically different? reasons pits Djokovic against Australian politics and the law.

WHAT ARE THE MINISTER'S POWERS?

Hawke has a personal power to cancel Djokovic's visa under Section 133C of the Migration Act 1958.
Hawke needed to be satisfied that Djokovic's presence in Australia maybe, or would or might be, a risk to the health, safety or good order of the Australian community.

The minister also needed to be satisfied that ordering Djokovic's deportation would be in the public interest,&nbsp;a term which has no legal definition.

Unlike the decision of a government underling, the rules of natural justice do not apply&nbsp;to a minister's decision. That means the minister did not have to tell Djokovic he was planning to deport him.

Hawke could have canceled Djokovic's visa in secret and then notified the Serbian tennis star days later that he had to go. Had the Australian Border Force come to detain Djokovic, they would legally have had to reveal only then that he had no visa.

Under Section 133F of the Act, Djokovic could have then requested the minister reverse his decision, but the only realistic option would have been to appeal it in court.

HOW DOES THE MINISTER EXERCISE HIS POWER?

In Djokovic' s case, Australian government lawyers warned him that the minister was planning to intervene on Monday when a judge reinstated his visa. The star athlete's high profile might have encouraged the government to appear even handed.

Djokovic's lawyers provided evidence for why he was entitled to keep his visa and be allowed to defend his Australian Open title in the days before the minister acted.

While Hawke has sweeping discretion to define public interest in canceling a visa, he must also be thoughtful and detailed in his reasoning.

These decisions aren't straightforward. There is case law which compels a minister when exercising this power personally to have active intellectual engagement with the materials and with the decision,&nbsp;immigration lawyer Kian Bone said.

It's not something that he (Hawke) can have a one-liner saying: Dear Mr. Djokovic, your visa is canceled.' He can't have a bureaucrat or a staffer write a decision for him, look at it for two minutes and sign off on it,&nbsp;Bone added.

HOW DO YOU OVERTURN A MINISTER'S DECISON?

Because the minister's power is so broad and discretionary, grounds for appeal are potentially fewer than they are for a decision of a public servant acting on a minister's authority. But courts have overturned ministers' decisions in the past.

The immigration minister's powers are among the broadest provided under Australian law, said Greg Barns, a lawyer experienced in visa cases.

One of the criticisms of this particular power is that it is so broad and it's effectively allowing the minister to play God with someone's life,&nbsp;Barns said.

It's inevitable that political considerations would form part of the decision because that concept of public interest is so broad that it allows a minister to effectively take into account political considerations, even though theoretically that ought not be done,? Barnes added.

Political considerations are heightened for Prime Minister Scott Morrison's conservative coalition with an election due by May at the latest.

Although Australia has one of the highest rates of COVID-19 vaccination in the world, the government is concerned by Djokovic's popularity among those who are opposed to vaccine mandates or skeptical of the vaccines' efficacy.

Djokovic's lawyers don't accept that those sentiments are a legitimate reason to deny the sporting star an attempt at a record 21 Grand Slam titles.

The minister only considers the potential for exciting anti-vax sentiment in the event that he's present&nbsp;at the Australian Open, Djokovic's lawyer Nick Wood told a court on Friday.
Hawke's reasons do not take into account the potential impact on those attitudes if Djokovic is forcibly removed, Wood said.

The minister gives no consideration whatsoever to what effect that may have on anti-vax sentiment and indeed on public order,&nbsp;Wood said. That seems patently irrational.

How Novak Djokovic plans to fight deportation in court ahead of Australian Open

The sports section in every newspaper or various portals, so far in 2022, has been hogged by only one man, i.e. Novak Djokovic. The world number 1 tennis star has been caught in a huge controversy before the Australian Open -- the first-ever Grand Slam of the calendar year.&nbsp;

Ahead of the marquee tournament, the nine-time Australian Open champion Djokovic landed in Melbourne, on January 4, with a medical exemption for Covid-19 vaccination. For the unversed, ATP had made it clear that all players need to be fully vaccinated to take part in the Aus Open. The Serbian, however, got an exemption from the Victorian government before travelling Down Under.&nbsp;

On his arrival, Djokovic was taken aback with his exemption being tarnished and his visa getting cancelled. As a result, he was sent to a detention center, i.e. an immigration hotel in Melbourne, for four days before his lawyers managed to free him as Australian Judge Anthony&nbsp;Kelly ordered his release, on January 10, with immediate effect.&nbsp;

Djokovic's Aus Open saga didn't die down there itself. As the Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke comprises discretionary personal powers to revoke anyone's visa on various grounds, he did the same for the Serbian on Friday (January 14). "Today I exercised my power... to cancel the visa held by Mr Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so," the Immigration Minister said in a statement.

On the other hand, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison&nbsp;said that the decision followed "careful consideration".

Amid all this, the 34-year-old Djokovic admitted to have breached Covid protocols as he went ahead with an interview to a French-newspaper L'equipe's journalist&nbsp;despite a positive report with regard to the infection in December, 2021.&nbsp;

In addition, Djokovic shifted the blame on his agent for incorrectly filling details in his travel form on arrival Down Under (he also&nbsp;acknowledged that his travel declaration form contained falsehoods about his whereabouts the 14 days preceding his flight to Australia).

Thus, Djokovic has dug his own grave in many ways ahead of the Aus Open. As the entire saga continues to get complicated with each passing day,&nbsp;with the star player set to take his fight against deportation from Australia to a Federal Court on January 15 (Saturday),&nbsp;here's reliving some big controversies surrounding the Serbian:&nbsp;

1)Hitting female line judge

During the 2020 US Open, Djokovic was disqualified after hitting a female line judge in frustration during his fourth-round match versus Spain's Pablo Busta.&nbsp;

The Serbian did so after a fall and dropping a serve to trail 5-6. While it wasn't intentional, Djokovic's fate was sealed under the Grand Slam rules. After the incident, Djokovic had said in a statement, "This whole situation has left me really sad and empty. I checked on the linesperson and the tournament told me that thank God she is feeling OK. I'm extremely sorry to have caused her such stress. So unintended. So wrong."

2) The infamous Covid tour

Amit the pandemic, in 2020, Djokovic has organised an Adrian tour,&nbsp;i.e. a series of exhibition games in Balkans with professional tennis entirely shut down.&nbsp;

However, the tournament was abandoned due to Bulgarian player Grigor Dimitrov testing positive. As a result, Djokovic, his wife and many other players also tested positive.&nbsp;The players were heavily criticised for embaring a nightclub and partying during the pandemic.&nbsp;

3) 'Djokovic is a tool'

During the 2021 Aus Open, Djokovic arrived in Melbourne and again landed himself in controversy by demanding that tennis players should be given private homes along with tennis courts.&nbsp;

To this, Aussie player Nick Krygios tweeted in response by saying, "Djokovic is a tool."

4) Exaggerating injuries and taking medical breaks

Djokovic has been accused of taking unnecessary medical breaks and exaggerating injuries whenever the going gets tough for him during a game. In 2008 US Open, he took two medical timeouts during his five-set thrilling win over Tommy Robredo, upsetting the Spaniard.&nbsp;

On the other hand, Djokovic didn't hesitate in breaking the flow of the game once again during his 2020 French Open quarter-final clash versus Carreon Busta.&nbsp;

Back then, Busta had stated, "Every time a match gets complicated he asks for medical assistance."

Thus, Djokovic isn't alien to controversies. He, however, is currently going through his biggest battle off the court and dominating the headlines for all the wrong reasons; acting as a buzzkill for many tennis loyalists worldwide prior to the Aus Open.

Novak Djokovic: Serbia's pride and controversy's favourite child

Unvaccinated tennis star Novak Djokovic won the right to take his fight against deportation from Australia to a Federal Court on Saturday after the government cancelled his visa for the second time over COVID-19 entry regulations.

The government undertook not to deport him until the case was over, although the world`s number one player was nevertheless ordered to return to pre-deportation detention at 8 a.m. (2100 GMT Friday).

His legal team submitted their appeal late at night - less than three hours after Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used discretionary powers to revoke the visa - in the hope that he can still begin the defence of his Australian Open title on Monday.
They said they would argue that Djokovic`s deportation could be just as much of a threat to public health, by fanning anti-vaccine sentiment, as letting him stay and exempting him from Australia`s requirement that all visitors must be vaccinated.

While Prime Minister Scott Morrison`s government has won support at home for its tough stance on border security during the pandemic, it has not escaped criticism for the seemingly inconsistent handling of Djokovic`s visa application.
The 34-year-old Serbian, bidding for a record 21st Grand Slam title, had been told on arrival on Jan. 5 that the medical exemption that enabled him to travel was invalid.

He spent several days in immigration detention, in a hotel also used for asylum-seekers, before that decision was revoked on procedural grounds.
Hawke said on Friday that he had now exercised his prerogative to cancel the visa "on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so".
&nbsp;

`PROTECTING BORDERS`

He said he had considered information from Djokovic and the authorities, and that the government was "firmly committed to protecting Australia`s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic".
Judge Anthony Kelly, who revoked the first cancellation, said the government had agreed not to deport Djokovic before the case concluded, and that the player could leave detention to meet his lawyers and attend hearings.

Although Djokovic has publicly opposed compulsory vaccination, he has not campaigned against vaccination in general.
The controversy has nonetheless intensified a global debate over the rights of the unvaccinated, and become a tricky political issue for Morrison as he prepares for an election due by May.
"Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected," Morrison said in a statement.

"This is what the minister is doing in taking this action today. Our strong border protection policies have kept Australians safe."
Australia has endured some of the world`s longest lockdowns, and has seen a runaway Omicron outbreak bring nearly a million cases in the last two weeks.
More than 90% of Australian adults are vaccinated, and an online poll by the News Corp media group found that 83% favoured deportation for Djokovic.

His cause was not helped by an incorrect entry declaration, where a box was ticked stating he had not travelled abroad in the two weeks before leaving for Australia. In fact, he had travelled between Spain and Serbia.
Djokovic blamed the error on his agent and acknowledged he also should not have done an interview and photoshoot for a French newspaper on Dec. 18 while infected with COVID-19.
The player has, however, been hailed as a hero by anti-vaccination campaigners, and last September more than 200 people were arrested during sometimes violent protests in Melbourne against a lockdown imposed to contain the spread of COVID-19.

`PATENTLY IRRATIONAL`

Djokovic`s legal team said the government was arguing that letting him stay in Australia would incite others to refuse vaccination.
One of his lawyers told the court that this was "patently irrational" because Hawke was ignoring the effect that forcibly removing "this high profile, legally compliant, negligible risk, medical contradicted player" might have on anti-vax sentiment and on public order.
Djokovic had looked relaxed as he practised serves and returns with his entourage on an empty court at Melbourne Park on Friday, occasionally resting to wipe sweat from his face.

He was included in the draw as top seed and due to face fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic on Monday.
Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, speaking before Hawke`s decision, said Djokovic was "playing by his own rules" and making vaccinated players "look like fools".

In Belgrade, some already appeared resigned to Djokovic missing the tournament.
"He is a role model to all of us, but rules must clearly be set," Milan Majstorovic told Reuters TV. "I am unsure how big the involvement of the politics is in that."
Another passer-by, Ana Bojic, said: "He can either vaccinate to remain world number one - or he can be stubborn and end his career."

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic appeal to be heard on Saturday as Australia cancels Serbian's visa again

Is it fair to treat world no.1 Novak Djokovic like a common criminal when ATP made clear that he has done nothing wrong and followed the rules made for players entering Australia? WION speaks with Nandan Bal, Indian Tennis Coach for more perspective.

Boris Johnson, Kim Kardashian, Novak Djokovic: Here's a list of most famous COVID-19 rulebreakers

The Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has cancelled Novak Djokovic's visa for a second time on Friday, saying the World No. 1 is unvaccinated for COVID-19 and may pose a risk to the community.

Australia's immigration minister Alex Hawke cancels Djokovic's visa

Former world number one Andy Murray said Friday the Novak Djokovic saga is not good for tennis or the Australian Open but refused to stick the boot into his rival "whilst he's down".<o:p></o:p>

The 20-time Grand Slam winner's visa has been cancelled for a second time in a new attempt to deport the unvaccinated Djokovic just days before the opening major of the year, where he would be defending his title.<o:p></o:p>

British veteran Murray, a five-time finalist at Melbourne Park, said the saga had dragged on too long.<o:p></o:p>

"I mean, it's not a good situation," said the three-time Grand Slam winner after reaching his first final since 2019 at the Sydney Classic.<o:p></o:p>

But he added: "I'm not going to sit here and start kicking Novak whilst he's down.

"It just seems like it's dragged on for quite a long time now and not great for the tennis, not great for the Australian Open, not great for Novak."<o:p></o:p>

Murray&nbsp;said he wasn't clear on what would happen next or whether the top seed could play his first-round match of the Australian Open against fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic next week.<o:p></o:p>

"I don't know what route he goes down, if he can appeal that and how long that takes, and can he still be out practising whilst that process is going on or still competing in the tournament?" he said.&nbsp;<o:p></o:p>

"Yeah, just want it obviously to get resolved. I think it would be good for everyone if that was the case."&nbsp;

Djokovic is an avowed Covid-19 vaccine sceptic, which has caused his predicament, and Murray said while people should be free to make their own decisions, he encouraged everyone to get the jab.<o:p></o:p>

Former world number one Andy Murray said Friday the Novak Djokovic saga is not good for tennis or the Australian Open but refused to stick the boot into his rival "whilst he's down". The 20-time Grand Slam winner's visa has been cancelled for a second time in a new attempt to deport the unvaccinated Djokovic just days before the opening major of the year, where he would be defending his title. British veteran Murray, a five-time finalist at Melbourne Park, said the saga had dragged on too long. "I mean, it's not a good situation," said the three-time Grand Slam winner after reaching his first final since 2019 at the Sydney Classic. But he added: "I'm not going to sit here and start kicking Novak whilst he's down. Murray said he wasn't clear on what would happen next or whether the top seed could play his first-round match of the Australian Open against fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic next week. "I don't know what route he goes down, if he can appeal that and how long that takes, and can he still be out practising whilst that process is going on or still competing in the tournament?" he said. "Yeah, just want it obviously to get resolved. I think it would be good for everyone if that was the case." Australia cancels Novak Djokovic’s visa again, agrees to delay deportation

Lawyers for Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke have agreed to not deport World number one men`s singles tennis player Novak Djokovic from Australia.

The lawyers have agreed to not deport Djokovic until the court proceedings are underway on his matter or till the issue is not transferred to another court, reported The Sydney Morning Herald.

Djokovic`s visa was cancelled on Friday by Hawke, the Australian Minister for Immigration, Citizenship, Migrant Services, and Multicultural Affairs.

"Today I exercised my power under section 133C(3) of the Migration Act to cancel the visa held by Mr Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so," minister in an official statement said.

"This decision followed orders by the Federal Circuit and Family Court on January 10, 2022, quashing a prior cancellation decision on procedural fairness grounds. In making this decision, I carefully considered information provided to me by the Department of Home Affairs, the Australian Border Force and Mr Djokovic."

"The Morrison Government is firmly committed to protecting Australia`s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic. I thank the officers of the Department of Home Affairs and the Australian Border Force who work every day to serve Australia`s interests in increasingly challenging operational environments," the statement added.

Djokovic`s visa was initially cancelled upon arrival after hours of interrogation by Border Force officials. Then on Monday, judge Anthony Kelly of the Federal Circuit and Family Court of Australia quashed the cancellation of Djokovic`s visa after tennis player spent five days detained in an immigration hotel.

Notably, world number one men`s singles tennis player Djokovic on Wednesday admitted that he conducted an in-person media interview and photoshoot in December despite knowing the fact that he was COVID-19 positive.

Novak Djokovic won't be deported from Australia on Friday, says Immigration Minister Alex Hawke

Unvaccinated tennis star Novak Djokovic on Friday asked an Australian court to block his deportation ahead of the Australian Open after the government cancelled his visa for the second time over COVID-19 entry regulations.

Djokovic`s lawyers submitted their request for an injunction late at night, less than three hours after Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used discretionary powers to revoke the visa.

The world tennis number one, bidding for a record 21st Grand Slam trophy in defending his Australian title, had been told on arrival on Jan. 5 that his visa, granted on the basis of a medical exemption from a vaccination requirement for visitors, was invalid.

He spent several days in immigration detention before that decision was revoked on procedural grounds. His lawyers said the government had told them Djokovic would not be taken back into detention on Friday night.
The Age newspaper reported that the 34-year-old Serbian had been summoned to appear before immigration officials on Saturday.

Hawke said in a statement that he had "exercised my power under Section 133C(3) of the Migration Act to cancel the visa held by Mr Novak Djokovic on health and good order grounds, on the basis that it was in the public interest to do so".

Under Section 133C, Djokovic would not be able to secure a visa to Australia for three years, except in compelling circumstances. The player`s legal team said Hawke had argued that allowing Djokovic to stay would excite anti-vaccination sentiment.

Although Djokovic has publicly opposed compulsory vaccination, he has not campaigned against vaccination in general, and his lawyers called Hawke`s decision "patently irrational". They said they hoped their challenge could be heard by Sunday, the day before the tournament starts.

The controversy has intensified a global debate over the rights of the unvaccinated, and become a tricky political issue for Prime Minister Scott Morrison as he campaigns for an election due by May.

While Morrison`s government has won support at home for its tough stance on border security during the pandemic, it has not escaped criticism for the seemingly inconsistent handling of Djokovic`s visa application

"Australians have made many sacrifices during this pandemic, and they rightly expect the result of those sacrifices to be protected," Morrison said in a statement.

"This is what the minister is doing in taking this action today. Our strong border protection policies have kept Australians safe," he said, adding he would be making no further comment in view of expected legal proceedings.
Djokovic was included in the draw as top seed and was due to face fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic for his opening match next week.

Looking relaxed, he had practised his serves and returns with his entourage on an empty court at Melbourne Park earlier on Friday, occasionally resting to wipe sweat from his face.

Hawke said he had carefully considered information from Djokovic and Australian authorities, adding the government was "firmly committed to protecting Australia`s borders, particularly in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic".

Australia has endured some of the world`s longest lockdowns, has a 90% vaccination rate among adults, and has seen a runaway Omicron outbreak bring nearly a million cases in the last two weeks.

Greek world number four Stefanos Tsitsipas, speaking before Hawke`s decision, said Djokovic was "playing by his own rules" and making vaccinated players "look like fools".

British tennis star Andy Murray told reporters at the Sydney Classic tournament that the situation was "Not great for the tennis, not great for the Australian Open, not great for Novak".

An online poll by the News Corp media group found that 83% favoured deportation for Djokovic. "Scott Morrison made the rational decision to send the wealthy tennis star home after calculating the enormous political cost of giving him special treatment," wrote David Crowe, chief political correspondent for the Sydney Morning Herald and Age newspapers.

Opposition Labor leader Anthony Albanese said: "It should never have come to this ... how is it that that visa was granted in the first place if he wasn`t eligible because he wasn`t fully vaccinated?"

Anti-vaxxers have hailed Djokovic as a hero while his family and the Serbian government have portrayed him as a victim of persecution.

In Belgrade, some appeared resigned to Djokovic missing the tournament.

"He is a role model to all of us, but rules must clearly be set," Milan Majstorovic told Reuters TV. "I am unsure how big the involvement of the politics is in that."

Djokovic`s cause was not helped by a wrong entry declaration, where a box was ticked stating he had not travelled abroad in the two weeks before leaving for Australia.

In fact, he had travelled between Spain and Serbia. Djokovic blamed the error on his agent and acknowledged he also should not have done an interview and photoshoot for a French newspaper on Dec. 18 while infected with COVID-19.

Novak Djokovic tries to avert deportation after Australia cancels visa again

Novak Djokovic had his first training session at the Rod Laver Arena on Tuesday as he aims to bag his record 21st Grand Slam. Djokovic has had an eventful last few days in Australia as he finally managed to return to the court after winning a court case against the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa upon his arrival in the country.

Djokovic had landed in Australia last week with a 'medical exemption' to take part in the Australian Open despite not revealing his status of COVID-19 vaccination. He was later detained by the border officials and sent to a detention hotel in Melbourne after it was deemed that he didn't qualify for an exemption.

While he had the option to take a flight back home, Djokovic decided to stay back and fight a legal battle. He won the court case on Monday after Judge Anthony Kelly ordered the visa cancellation decision be overturned and the tennis star to be released from detention from immediate effect.

Here is a timeline of the Australian Open visa saga involving Novak Djokovic:

How did Novak Djokovic land in trouble?

Djokovic, who had previously asserted that he is against mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, refused to reveal if he is vaccinated against the virus. However, the Serbian ace said last week that he was heading Down Under to play in the Australian Open after obtaining a 'medical exemption' from a panel of experts.

However, upon landing in Australia, his visa was revoked and Djokovic was sent into detention for failing to meet the criteria of an exemption. He spent five days in an immigration facility in Melbourne which his family alleged was in poor condition and inhumane.

What happened in the court case on Monday?

Djokovic's legal time filed a case against the decision by the Australian authorities to revoke his visa. In their court filings, Djokovic's lawyers revealed the tennis star had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year due to which he was granted a 'medical exemption' as he was ineligible for vaccination for the next six months.

The lawyers also stated that Djokovic was sent a letter from Tennis Australia's chief medical officer on 30 December stating that he had been granted a medical exemption.&nbsp;Judge Anthony Kelly ordered the visa cancellation decision be overturned and granted him release from detention in Melbourne.

Can the Australian government re-cancel Novak Djokovic's visa?

While the judge ruled the decision in the tennis superstar's favour, Australia's Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has a discretionary personal power to cancel Djokovic’s visa. Hawke is reportedly considering exercising his power which might see Djokovic get deported out of Australia just a week ahead of the start of the Australian Open.

Can Novak Djokovic challenge the decision once again?

If the Australian Immigration minister decides to exercise his power and re-cancel Djokovic's visa, he will be once again sent into immigration detention. Djokovic can challenge the decision in the court as judge Kelly has already asked to be informed immediately if the matter is to be extended once again.

How Did Novak Djokovic react to his court win?

The world no.1 tennis player took to social media on Monday to share a picture from the Rod Laver Arena while expressing his desire to play in the Australian Open and defend his title. Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open champion also thanked his fans and supporters.&nbsp;

"I'm pleased and grateful that the Judge overturned my visa cancellation. Despite all that has happened, I want to stay and try to compete @AustralianOpen," Djokovic said in a tweet.

"I remain focused on that. I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans. For now I cannot say more but THANK YOU all for standing with me through all this and encouraging me to stay strong," he added.

On Wednesday (January 12), Djokovic also shared&nbsp;issued a&nbsp;clarification on 'misinformation' over his Dec 16 Covid-19 Test, travel declaration. He took to his official Instagram handle and shared a lengthy post saying, "I want to address the continuing misinformation about my activities and attendance at events in December in the lead up to my positive PCR COVID test result.

“This is misinformation which needs to be corrected, particularly in the interest of alleviating broader concern in the community about my presence in Australia, and to address matters which are very hurtful and concerning to my family,” Djokovic said in the statement.

“I want to emphasise that I have tried very hard to ensure the safety of everyone and my compliance with testing obligations.

“I attended a basketball game in Belgrade on 14 December after which it was reported that a number of people tested positive with COVID 19. Despite having no COVID symptoms, I took a rapid antigen test on 16 December which was negative, and out of an abundance of caution, also took an official and approved PCR test on that same day,”&nbsp;he explained.

Here is a timeline of the Australian Open visa saga involving Novak Djokovic: How did Novak Djokovic land in trouble? Djokovic, who had previously asserted that he is against mandatory COVID-19 vaccination, refused to reveal if he is vaccinated against the virus. However, the Serbian ace said last week that he was heading Down Under to play in the Australian Open after obtaining a 'medical exemption' from a panel of experts. However, upon landing in Australia, his visa was revoked and Djokovic was sent into detention for failing to meet the criteria of an exemption. He spent five days in an immigration facility in Melbourne which his family alleged was in poor condition and inhumane. Also Read: Did Novak Djokovic lie in Australian Open entry form? Tennis stars lands in trouble yet again What happened in the court case on Monday? Djokovic's legal time filed a case against the decision by the Australian authorities to revoke his visa. In their court filings, Djokovic's lawyers revealed the tennis star had tested positive for COVID-19 in December last year due to which he was granted a 'medical exemption' as he was ineligible for vaccination for the next six months. The lawyers also stated that Djokovic was sent a letter from Tennis Australia's chief medical officer on 30 December stating that he had been granted a medical exemption. Judge Anthony Kelly ordered the visa cancellation decision be overturned and granted him release from detention in Melbourne. The world no.1 tennis player took to social media on Monday to share a picture from the Rod Laver Arena while expressing his desire to play in the Australian Open and defend his title. Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open champion also thanked his fans and supporters. On Wednesday (January 12), Djokovic also shared issued a clarification on 'misinformation' over his Dec 16 Covid-19 Test, travel declaration. Despite having no COVID symptoms, I took a rapid antigen test on 16 December which was negative, and out of an abundance of caution, also took an official and approved PCR test on that same day,” he explained. Australian judge to hold emergency Novak Djokovic hearing Friday: court

Novak Djokovic grew up with NATO bombs raining down on Serbia to become one of the greatest tennis players of all time. But the 34-year-old, who boasts a record-equalling 20 Grand Slams -- the same number as his great rivals Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal -- never fails to divide as well as unite.

His staggering achievements on court have often been overshadowed by blunders and mis-steps off it. The latest and most controversial -- sparked by his refusal to get vaccinated against Covid -- culminated Friday in the Australian government cancelling his visa for a second time, three days before the Australian Open.

Defending champion and world number one Djokovic flew into Melbourne last week claiming a vaccine exemption because of a positive PCR test result on December 16.

The exemption sparked fury among Australians -- who have endured Covid-19 lockdowns and restrictions for two years -- and his visa was cancelled, landing him in an immigration centre, before a court overturned that.

But the government has now torn up Djokovic's visa for a second time and he faces deportation.
- Brooding, divisive -

Even before this, Djokovic was seemingly doomed never to be held in the same esteem as Federer or Nadal, the undisputed people's champions.

There are those who see something too calculating in the Djokovic make-up -- an intense, brooding presence prone to affectation, a little too 'new age'.

A fiery temperament -- a characteristic often absent from the DNA of Federer and Nadal -- bubbles over too often.
His infamous default from the US Open in 2020 for petulantly swiping at a ball which speared into the throat of a female line judge was a snapshot of the demons that occasionally lurk inside.

Djokovic, who left Belgrade when he was 12 to train in Munich and escape NATO's bombardment of his home city, often feels he can't stand up for falling down.

His decision to organise a series of exhibition events in the Balkans in the middle of the pandemic may have been with the best of intentions but a series of positive Covid-19 tests, including for him and his wife Jelena, highlighted the recklessness of the plan.

He then publicly expressed his doubts over the Covid vaccination programme, a stance which saw him dubbed 'Novax'. One of his most vocal detractors, Australian player Nick Kyrgios, once accused Djokovic of a desperate need to be liked, describing the Serb's post-victory on-court "cup of love" gesture as "cringeworthy".

However, the career achievements and resolve of a player who was the first to smash through the $150 million prize-money barrier cannot be doubted. Four years ago, Djokovic's career was in the doldrums.

Unable to shake off the lingering effects of elbow surgery, he suffered a shock early exit at the French Open, once the site of many setbacks. With his ranking outside the top 20 for the first time in 12 years, Djokovic even threatened to skip Wimbledon.

He changed his mind, and suddenly rejuvenated, swept to a fourth title at the All England Club and successfully defended it a year later, saving two championship points in an epic final against Federer.

Race for greatness&nbsp;

Djokovic has 20 Grand Slam titles in his career haul of 86.

He has occupied the world number one spot for a record number of weeks, bettering the record of Pete Sampras.
In the race for greatness, he has winning records over both Nadal and Federer, 30-28 and 27-23 respectively.

Djokovic captured the first of his majors at the Australian Open in 2008, but it was three years before he added his second.

He dropped gluten from his diet, his lithe physique allowing him to chase down lost causes.

After leading Serbia to a maiden Davis Cup in 2010, he raced through the first half of 2011, building up a 48-1 winning run.

Only a semi-final defeat at the French Open prevented him from already capturing a calendar Grand Slam.

Despite that, he finished 2011 with a 70-6 win-loss record, a haul of 10 tournament victories and year-end number one for the first time.

Back-to-back Australian Opens followed in 2012 and 2013, although the French Open remained frustratingly out of reach with three heart-breaking losses until his 2016 breakthrough.

The year before, he won 11 titles and compiled a win-loss record of 82-6. In total, he has nine Australian Opens, six Wimbledons, three US Open titles and two French Opens.

His win over Nadal in an epic semi-final at last year's French Open was only the Spaniard's third loss in 108 matches at the event.

Djokovic has been responsible for two of them.

He added the 2021 Wimbledon title to his haul but missed out on becoming the first man in more than half a century to complete a calendar Grand Slam with defeat in the final of the US Open.

Novak Djokovic - brooding, divisive tennis great with fiery temper

Novak Djokovic's problems don't seem to end anytime soon as the tennis superstar finds himself in trouble once again after his visa was revoked once again by the Australian government on Friday (January 14). Djokovic had won a court case earlier this week to be released from detention and get the decision to cancel his visa revoked by the court.

However, on Friday, Australia's Immigration Minister Alex Hawke used discretionary powers to once again cancel Djokovic's visa citing 'health risk' towards the community. The decision comes as a huge blow to Djokovic's chances of taking part in the Australian Open which is all set to get underway from January 17.

Ahead of the Australian government's decision to re-cancel the visa of the world no.1 men's tennis player, legendary Australian cricketer Shane Warne said both parties have the right to decide what they want to do in the matter. If Djokovic wants to remain unvaccinated, it is his choice while the Australian government has the right to deport him, feels Warne.

“Novak is a great tennis player &amp; one of the all time greats. No doubt. But he’s lied on entry forms, been out in public when he knew he had covid &amp; is now facing legal cases. He’s entitled to not be jabbed but Oz is entitled to throw him out ! Agree ? #shambles”, Warne wrote in a tweet.

Just hours after his tweet, the Australian government announced that Djokovic's visa had been cancelled once again over his COVID-19 vaccination status. Earlier, the star tennis player had his visa revoked for the first time in the first week of February when he had landed in Melbourne.

He was later detained by the border officials and sent into an immigration hotel in Melbourne where he spent five days before being released after winning the legal battle. Djokovic has been confirmed as the top seed in the men's singles category ahead of the Australian Open.

However, there remains doubts over his participation in the tournament as the visa case continues to drag on.

Novak Djokovic entitled not to get jabbed, Australia entitled to throw him out: Shane Warne

The Australian government`s decision to cancel Novak Djokovic`s visa for a second time on Friday will shake up the Australian Open draw and could hand "Big Three" rival Rafa Nadal a boost in the race for the Grand Slam record.

Top seed and defending champion Djokovic had been bracketed to play fellow Serbian Miomir Kecmanovic in the first round during the draw on Thursday.

However, unless Djokovic successfully overturns the government`s decision for a second time through the courts, his place at the top of the draw will be taken by Russian fifth seed Andrey Rublev.

The 17th seed Gael Monfils, who had been bracketed to play unseeded Argentine Federico Coria, will move into Rublev`s original slot and take on Italian Gianluca Mager in the first round.

Kazakh world number 35 Alexander Bublik, who had been drawn to play a qualifier, will now move into Monfils` initial spot and play Coria.

The vacant spot in the draw will be decided after qualifying. Djokovic`s withdrawal could mean he loses the world number one ranking if second seed Daniil Medvedev or third seed Alex Zverev win the tournament. It could also prove crucial in the all-time Grand Slam titles race, with Djokovic sharing the record of 20 championships with the absent Roger Federer and Nadal.

Sixth seed Nadal may be among the most pleased with Djokovic`s withdrawal. The Spanish great would have had to meet nine-times champion Djokovic in the semi-finals if the tournament progressed according to seeding.

Though a fine player, Rublev would seem a more manageable obstacle for Nadal, who won his sole Australian Open title in 2009 but made finals in 2012, 2014, 2017 and 2019.

Medvedev was rated second favourite by bookmakers behind Djokovic until the Serb`s visa cancellation. The Russian, who thrashed Djokovic in the U.S. Open final to win his maiden Grand Slam title, will likely be favourite when the tournament starts Monday.

Australian Open draw shaken up with World No. 1 Novak Djokovic's visa cancellation

In what comes as a huge blow to Novak Djokovic's chances of taking part in the upcoming Australian Open, his visa has been cancelled once again by Australia. Australia cancelled Djokovic's visa for the second time in a row on Friday over his fight to remain in the country and play in the Australian Open while being unvaccinated. The decision was taken by Australia's Immigration Minister Alex Hawke.

Hawke had the choice of exercising his personal power to revoke Djokovic's visa once again after the tennis star had won a court case against the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa when he had first arrived in the country unvaccinated with a 'medical exemption' last week.

The Australian government has sought to deport Djokovic from the country over his COVID-19 vaccination status.&nbsp;Australian Immigration Minister Hawke said he took the decision on the basis of "health and good order grounds". The re-cancellation of the visa might see Djokovic get banned from being granted an Australian visa for as many as three years.

However, Djokovic has the right to relaunch a legal case against the Australian government's decision to ensure he gets to remain in the country and play in the Australian Open 2022. Djokovic has already been included as a top seed in the Australian Open draw and had been training at the Rod Laver Arena ahead of the start of the tournament on January 17.

The decision comes after it came to light that Djokovic had 'lied' in his travel declaration form about not travelling anywhere 14 days prior to his arrival in Australia. The tennis star had travelled to Spain from Serbia before heading Down Under.&nbsp;

However, Djokovic addressed the allegations of a false declaration and stated that it was a 'human error' made by his agent. Djokovic's visa had been revoked for the first time on January 6 when he arrived in Melbourne after&nbsp;the Australian border officials said the World no.1 men's tennis player had "failed to provide proper evidence" for a medical exemption.

He was later sent into detention and spent days in an immigration hotel in Melbourne before being released earlier this week after winning a court battle against the Australian government's decision to revoke his visa.

Australia cancels Novak Djokovic's visa again as deportation threat looms

World number one Novak Djokovic's new calendar year hasn't begun on the right note. The Serbian landed in Melbourne last week to take part in the Australian Open along with a medical exemption for Covid-19 vaccination, from the Victorian government. However, his visa wasn't cleared and his exemption was tarnished by the authorities at the airport as the 34-year-old was send to a detention centre, i.e. an immigration hotel in Melbourne, for four days.

On Monday (January 10), Djokovic won the court case against the Australian government as the&nbsp;Judge Anthony Kelly ordered the visa cancellation decision to be overturned and granted the Serbian's release from detention with immediate effect.&nbsp;In their court filings, the tennis star Djokovic's lawyers had mentioned that he had tested positive for COVID-19 in December 2021, hence, was granted a 'medical exemption' as the No. 1 ranked player was ineligible to get the jab for the next six months.

While Djokovic has started training in a bid for his 21st Grand Slam title during the forthcoming Australian Open, Immigration Minister Alex Hawke has a discretionary personal power which allows him to cancel the player's visa and get him deported out of the country. Hence, all is not over for the tennis superstar. In addition, Djokovic&nbsp;could face five-year jail term&nbsp;if he is found to have lied about his positive Covid test in Australia.

The Serbian sensationally admitted to lying on his entry declaration form&nbsp;and also interacted with others while knowingly infected with the deadly virus. In a sworn court affidavit relied upon by the Federal Circuit Court, Djokovic admitted of being aware of having the infection on 16 December. He said, "On 16 December 2021, I was tested and diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 (Covid)."

However, Djokovic contradicted his own statements and later mentioned in a public statement he was aware of carrying the virus only on 17 December. Under Australia’s Crimes Act, providing misleading information to the court is a crime for which one can be punishable for five years in prison.

Taking his original statement into account, Djokovic, thus, admitted to have broken Serbia’s Covid protocols and was seen out and about despite being positive. For the unversed, the Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic had told the BBC&nbsp;that roaming outside despite a positive report&nbsp;is a ‘clear breach’.

More trouble for the Serbian?

Per Article 248 - ‘Failure to Act Pursuant to Health Regulations During Epidemic’ - whoever doesn't adhere to the rules, he, or she, will face a maximum penalty of three years in prison. The findings have come forward following reports that the Australian Border Force is investigating Djokovic after concerns that the Serbian had incorrectly declared he had not travelled - and would not do so for 14 days - prior to his flight to&nbsp;Australia.

Recently, social media posts had made heads turn which appeared to show that Djokovic was in Belgrade on Christmas Day before flying Down Under -- from Spain -- on January 4. On Wednesday (January 12), the tennis star shared a lengthy post on his Instagram handle, where he shifted the blame of his agent who made a mistake in filling his travel form.

Djokovic wrote on his Instagram post, "My agent sincerely apologises for the administrative mistake in ticking the incorrect box about my previous travel before coming to Australia,” said Djokovic. “This was a human error and certainly not deliberate," he further added.

World number one Novak Djokovic's new calendar year hasn't begun on the right note. The Serbian landed in Melbourne last week to take part in the Australian Open along with a medical exemption for Covid-19 vaccination, from the Victorian government.

On Monday (January 10), Djokovic won the court case against the Australian government as the Judge Anthony Kelly ordered the visa cancellation decision to be overturned and granted the Serbian's release from detention with immediate effect. In their court filings, the tennis star Djokovic's lawyers had mentioned that he had tested positive for COVID-19 in December 2021, hence, was granted a 'medical exemption' as the No. In addition, Djokovic could face five-year jail term if he is found to have lied about his positive Covid test in Australia. The Serbian sensationally admitted to lying on his entry declaration form and also interacted with others while knowingly infected with the deadly virus. In a sworn court affidavit relied upon by the Federal Circuit Court, Djokovic admitted of being aware of having the infection on 16 December. He said, "On 16 December 2021, I was tested and diagnosed with SARS-CoV-2 (Covid)." However, Djokovic contradicted his own statements and later mentioned in a public statement he was aware of carrying the virus only on 17 December. Under Australia’s Crimes Act, providing misleading information to the court is a crime for which one can be punishable for five years in prison. Taking his original statement into account, Djokovic, thus, admitted to have broken Serbia’s Covid protocols and was seen out and about despite being positive. For the unversed, the Serbian Prime Minister Ana Brnabic had told the BBC that roaming outside despite a positive report is a ‘clear breach’. × ALSO READ | Australian Open 2022: Novak Djokovic, Ashleigh Barty get top billings, Rafael Nadal to begin as 6th seed More trouble for the Serbian? Per Article 248 - ‘Failure to Act Pursuant to Health Regulations During Epidemic’ - whoever doesn't adhere to the rules, he, or she, will face a maximum penalty of three years in prison. The findings have come forward following reports that the Australian Border Force is investigating Djokovic after concerns that the Serbian had incorrectly declared he had not travelled - and would not do so for 14 days - prior to his flight to Australia. World No. 1 Novak Djokovic could face 5-year jail term if found guilty of lying about Covid positive test

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has admitted to flouting covid isolation. He has also admitted to making a false declaration on his travel form to Australia. Will Djokovic's conduct overshadow his performance in court? Will this controversy taint his legacy? Here's what Palki Sharma has to say.

Gravitas: Djokovic admits flouting Covid protocol

The action in the world of tennis is set to begin with the first Grand Slam of the year, i.e. the Australian Open, to commence on January 17 (Monday). Ahead of the marquee tournament, there has been a lot of noise outside the court courtesy world number one Novak Djokovic's Aus Open saga.&nbsp;

Before the action starts on the court, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with Greek player Stefanos Tsitsipas on his journey so far, recovering from a painful elbow surgery, Djokovic's global controversy, learnings from French Open 2021 final loss and on the Big Four.

On recovery from elbow surgery

Tsitsipas underwent a right elbow surgery after struggling with the injury for long. As a result, he pulled&nbsp;out of his opening match in Paris Masters and went down to Andrey Rublev in his first group clash to bow out of ATP Finals, during mid-November 2021. He labelled his recovery as a difficult phase 'physically and mentally'.

"I was four weeks away from tennis, didn't touch the racket. I think I can play now with no pain. The recovery has been very good. Even my doctor said that my recovery has been faster than it should've, which is great news for me. When things like this happens, it is very difficult physically and mentally. But I'm very grateful to have found the right people, right doctor....It is a big mental relief knowing that I won't have to struggle that much now again," he revealed.

On Djokovic's global controversy

"There's been a lot of talk about it since the past four-five weeks. People are constantly talking about it and it is the No. 1 topic these days, with no talks about tennis (smiles). When you are one of the best tennis players in the world, there's going to be a lot of interest and demand around you. How I see it is that everyone has the freedom to choose and decide for themselves. If one sees it as not respecting the human race, it is upto anyone really. End of the day, your body is a very important machine. You have to protect it. You will feel not as safe as others (of getting vaccinated), then you should proceed accordingly," Tsitsipas opined.

On Wednesday (January 11), the Serbian superstar Djokovic had admitted to breaching Covid rules, by going ahead with an interview with a Serbian journalist despite a Covid positive test. In addition, he shifted the blame on his agent for filing his travel form incorrectly after entering Australia for the first-ever Grand Slam of 2022.

Given the tennis stars are role models for the younger generations, does Tsitsipas feel Djokovic set a wrong example by breaching Covid rules?

The 23-year-old Tsitsipas made an honest assessment and said, "For sure, he's been playing by his own rules. He's been doing something which not many tennis players have the guts to do especially after ATP announced certain criteria for players to enter the country. Not many would've thought to come to Australia unvaccinated or not following the protocols. It takes a lot of daring to it and putting a Grand Slam at risk. I chose to go and be 100 percent ready for whatever was to come and not having thinking about anything else. Doesn't mean my way is the right one and his way is the wrong one. Each one has a different perception."

Tennis community's take on Djokovic's Aus Open saga

Given that many have varied opinions when it comes to Djokovic's Aus Open saga, Tsitsipas shared what the tennis community feels and revealed, "Two ways to look about it. Every single player, almost, the stats say that 98% of the players are fully vaccinated and have followed the rules. One side of it is that we have been very disciplined. On the other hand, a very small majority&nbsp;have followed a different path and aren't playing by the rules; making&nbsp;the majority look like fools (chuckles)."

On French Open loss to Djokovic&nbsp;

Tsitsipas, the world No. 4 in ATP Men's rankings, also reflected back on his French Open final loss to Djokovic last year. During the epic finale, the Greek player was leading the Serbian by two sets before the latter shocked the entire tennis fraternity with his aggressive style of play to win&nbsp;6–7, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2, 6–4.&nbsp;

On his disheartening loss, he told, "It taught me a lot. It taught me to not defend too much. Staying back...not attacking enough.... overthinking...that can cost you (the game). That has been the case after being two sets up. I kind of felt I backed down a little bit. But I also feel he raised his game a lot during the final. After the break, he refreshed himself and I saw a different Novak on court."

Are the likes of Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, etc. ready to take over from the Big Four?

Even someone with basic knowledge of tennis is aware of Big Four's dominance -- Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Djokovic and Andy Murray -- since early 2000s. Nonetheless, the present younger batch comprises some promising talents in the form of Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev -- both of whom have won a Grand Slam -- Tsitsipas and more.

Thus, Tsitsipas reacted on the transition phase and said the next lot is ready to take over.

"It is around the corner. With the big four not playing a lot when it comes to participation in Grand Slam, we all are competing well and have been very close. Daniil has been redeemed for his efforts with his first title (US Open in 2021). I see all of us competing for these titles a lot in the coming years. We are surrounded by a lot of young and talented players who have the ability to lift Grand Slam trophies and win in big stages," he signed off.

Each one has a different perception." × Tennis community's take on Djokovic's Aus Open saga Given that many have varied opinions when it comes to Djokovic's Aus Open saga, Tsitsipas shared what the tennis community feels and revealed, "Two ways to look about it. Every single player, almost, the stats say that 98% of the players are fully vaccinated and have followed the rules. One side of it is that we have been very disciplined. On the other hand, a very small majority have followed a different path and aren't playing by the rules; making the majority look like fools (chuckles)." ALSO READ | World No. 1 Novak Djokovic could face 5-year jail term if found guilty of lying about Covid positive test On French Open loss to Djokovic Tsitsipas, the world No. 4 in ATP Men's rankings, also reflected back on his French Open final loss to Djokovic last year. During the epic finale, the Greek player was leading the Serbian by two sets before the latter shocked the entire tennis fraternity with his aggressive style of play to win 6–7, 2–6, 6–3, 6–2, 6–4. After the break, he refreshed himself and I saw a different Novak on court." Are the likes of Tsitsipas, Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev, etc. ready to take over from the Big Four?

Tennis world No.1 Novak Djokovic was included in the Australian Open official draw on Thursday, although uncertainty remained about whether the government will cancel the top seed`s visa for a second time.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke is weighing exercising his discretionary power to revoke Djokovic`s visa over concern about the star`s medical exemption from Australia`s COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

The 34-year-old defending champion, who was out practicing at the Rod Laver Arena earlier on Thursday, drew unseeded fellow Serb Miomir Kecmanovic for his opening round match, expected to be played on Monday or Tuesday.

Organiser Tennis Australia had delayed the official draw for more than an hour, without saying why.

The controversy has assumed an importance that goes beyond tennis: it has intensified a global debate over the rights of the unvaccinated and become a tricky political issue for Prime Minister Scott Morrison as he campaigns for re-election.

Australia is due to hold an election by May, and while Morrison`s government has won support at home for its tough stance on border security before and during the pandemic, it has not escaped criticism over the botched handling of Djokovic`s visa.

Morrison declined to comment on Djokovic`s visa on Thursday.

Djokovic, a vaccine sceptic, fuelled widespread anger in Australia last week when he announced he was heading to Melbourne&nbsp;for the Australian Open with a medical exemption from requirements for visitors to be inoculated against COVID-19.

On his arrival, Australian Border Force officials decided his exemption was invalid and he was held alongside asylum-seekers at an immigration detention hotel for several days.

A court on Monday allowed him to stay on the grounds that officials had been "unreasonable" in the way they handled his interview in a seven-hour process in the middle of the night.

The government must now decide whether to let Djokovic remain and bid for a record 21st major title.

MISTAKES MADE

Djokovic`s cause was not helped by a mistake in his entry declaration, on which a box stating he had not travelled abroad in the two weeks prior to leaving for Australia was ticked. In fact, he had gone to Spain from Serbia.

Djokovic, 34, attributed the error to his agent and acknowledged he also should have rescheduled an interview and photoshoot for a French newspaper on Dec. 18 while infected with COVID-19.

Fans, including many Serbian Australians, gave him noisy support when he was detained. Anti-vaxxers have hailed him as a hero and his family have portrayed him as a champion of individual rights. But Djokovic may face hostility from the crowd if and when he walks out on court.

World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in Australian Open draw as visa decision looms

Tennis star Novak Djokovic has released a detailed statement to respond to several of the allegations against him. He has admitted meeting a journalist just after testing positive for covid-19 in December and he says his that agent did make a mistake in filling out his Australian travel declaration.

Australia`s top-rating television network said on Wednesday it was investigating a leaked video of two news anchors privately attacking tennis star Novak Djokovic and accusing him of lying about his COVID-19 status and visa application.

Seven West Media Ltd news reader Rebecca Maddern could be heard discussing the issues in an off-air conversation with co-anchor, Mike Amor, according to footage circulated on social media.

Maddern could be heard describing the Grand Slam champion as sneaky and lying on the expletive-filled video which was apparently recorded without Maddern`s knowledge, known as a "hot mic".

Amor, adjusting a lapel microphone, also accused Djokovic of making excuses and lying. "But I think he is going to get away with it," he said. The world number one, chasing his 21st Grand Slam title at next week`s Australian Open, had his visit to the country sensationally disrupted by a four-night stint in immigration detention after border control guards deemed his medical exemption for being unvaccinated against COVID-19 as invalid.

He had his visa reinstated after a legal challenge, allowing him to stay in the country. However, medical and travel documents filed in court led to questions about Djokovic`s movements before coming to Australia with social media posts appearing to show him in Belgrade less than two weeks before he headed to Spain and then on to Australia.

Accounts from two eyewitnesses and another individual, obtained by Reuters, corroborated those social media posts. On Wednesday, Djokovic addressed what he described as "continuing misinformation about my activities" in a long Instagram post.

"I want to emphasise that I have tried very hard to ensure the safety of everyone and my compliance with testing obligations," Djokovic said.

He's going to get away with it: Australia news anchors caught in Novak Djokovic's 'hot mic'

Novak Djokovic is a warming up for his bid to defend his Australian open title. Videos from Australia showed him hitting practice shots at Melbourne park training hard after winning a court challenge to stay in Australia but the tennis world number one still faces the threat of deportation. It is still unclear if Djokovic will participate in the Australian open or whether the government will extend legal proceedings against the player.

Novak Djokovic free but Australia deportation threat looms

Spanish Foreign Minister Jose Manuel Albares said on Tuesday that he does not have any information on whether tennis star Novak Djokovic had visited Spain before travelling to Australia.

Asked by a reporter if he knew whether Djokovic had entered Spain in December, potentially invalidating a declaration the player completed on travelling to Australia, Albares responded: "I have no record of this presence of Djokovic."

The focus has shifted towards the Australian Open, i.e. the first Grand Slam of the year, after Novak Djokovic's deportation case. The world number one player Djokovic had arrived in Melbourne last week with an exemption for Covid vaccination, from the Victorian government. However, his exemption was deemed as unsatisfactory and his visa was cancelled by the authorities at the airport as he was kept in an immigration centre.

On Monday (January 10), the Serbian won the case against the Australian government which allowed him to be released from the immigration hotel in Melbourne and prepare for the Australian Open. Thus, Djokovic got the top billing&nbsp;as the Australian Open confirmed the seeding for men and women's singles events on Tuesday. On the other hand, Ashleigh Barty was confirmed as the top seed in the women's singles category. Among the other big names, Rafael Nadal is the 6th seed in men's singles for the showpiece event Down Under. Meanwhile, Japan's Naomi Osaka has been seeded 13th, one above 2018 edition's runners-up Simona Halep, in the women's category.

While Djokovic has won the court battle, all isn't over for the Serbian. For the unversed, he can still be detained and deported if the immigration minister wishes to do so.

Thus, in this regard, his participation can be in jeopardy. "In line with due process, Minister Hawke will thoroughly consider the matter," a spokesman said, declining to comment further due to legal reasons.

If Djokovic gets the green signal to play, the 34-year-old will fight hard to become the first male tennis star to get to 21 Grand Slam titles. Nadal and Roger Federer (who won't be part of the Aus Open) are also tied at 20 grand slam titles each.

Australian Open 2022: Novak Djokovic, Ashleigh Barty get top billings, Rafael Nadal to begin as 6th seed

World number one Novak Djokovic has made heads turn for all the wrong reasons of late. Ahead of the Australian Open, i.e. the first-ever Grand Slam of 2022, the Serbian has been caught in a huge spot of bother as he arrived in Melbourne last week with an exemption for Covid vaccination before the authorities, at the airport, tarnished his exemption, cancelled his visa and sent him to an immigration hotel.

Thus, this caused a huge uproar at a global level. On Monday (January 10), the court decision favoured Djokovic, who was immediately released from detention. His lawyers had pointed out that the Serb couldn't have taken the jab as he had tested positive for Covid-19 in December, 2021. At present, the 34-year-old is now practising for the Aus Open, though there is no clarity on his participation, however, the immigration minister can overrule the court's decision order his Serb's deportation; banning him from Australia for three years.

It is interesting to note that Djokovic had got the exemption, for vaccination, from the Victorian government; who has remained quiet since the unfortunate turn of events. Thus, former Aussie spin wizard Shane Warne -- hailing from Victoria -- has joined the bandwagon and reacted to Djokovic's controversy.

"Are these facts true? As I've read so many different reports in this messy embarrassing saga. Novak tested positive to covid Dec 16 &amp; attended a public event on the 17th that inc (included) children. Said he hadn't travelled in 14 days before arriving in Oz but travelled Jan 2 to Spain?," tweeted Warne.

"And did Novak have a medical exemption ? If so - has the person who gave it to him been identified ? What was that exemption? Just trying to get the facts as I'm embarrassed as a Victorian at this situation. Vic Govt are quiet ? Can someone explain to us in plain Eng please," Warne's second tweet read.

The curious case of Djokovic is far from over as of now. It depends on the federal government if they wish to push the case further and deport the Serbian tennis superstar or allow him to participate in the forthcoming Aus Open; to commence on January 17.&nbsp;

Novak tested positive to covid Dec 16 & attended a public event on the 17th that inc (included) children. Said he hadn't travelled in 14 days before arriving in Oz but travelled Jan 2 to Spain?," tweeted Warne. "And did Novak have a medical exemption ? Embarrassed as a Victorian: Shane Warne baffled as he reacts to Novak Djokovic's Aus Open saga

Novak Djokovic won the court case against the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa upon arrival in the country last week. Djokovic had travelled to Australia to take part in the Australian Open after being granted a medical exemption as he refused to reveal details of his COVID-19 vaccination. However, his visa was revoked owing to Australia's strict guidelines regarding COVID-19 vaccination.

Djokovic was sent into detention where he spent a few days before being released on Monday (January 10) after winning the court case in Melbourne. While his legal win comes as a huge boost for Djokovic as he aims to defend his Australian Open title, the tennis superstar has landed in fresh controversy over 'lying' in his travel declaration form.

In the Australian Open entry form, Djokovic was asked if he had travelled anywhere in the 14-day period before his arrival to Australia. The tennis star marked the 'No' section on the form, however, pictures have surfaced on social media suggesting otherwise.

Djokovic was spotted playing tennis in Serbia during the Christmas period before he was spotted in Marbella in Spain on January 2. As per a report in the Sydney Morning Herald, the Australian government officials are looking at the false claims made in Djokovic's travel declaration form in Australia.

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic was training at the Australian Open venue on Tuesday, a day after he won a legal battle against the cancellation of his visa.

Novak Djokovic trains at Australian open venue as participation hangs in balance

Tennis superstar Novak Djokovic trained at the Australian Open venue Tuesday in search of a record 21st Grand Slam but his dream hung in the balance as the government pondered cancelling his visa, again.

The world number one had scored a stunning courtroom victory the day before, overturning the Australian government's decision to cancel his visa on Covid-19 vaccination grounds.

The unvaccinated 34-year-old Serbian ace now says he is determined to stay in Melbourne and compete in the Australian Open, which starts in just six days.

"I remain focused on that. I flew here to play at one of the most important events we have in front of the amazing fans," Djokovic said on Instagram Monday.

Wearing a t-shirt and shorts, he limbered up in a gym Tuesday accompanied by coach Goran Ivanisevic before going into the players' area and heading for centre court at Melbourne Park, two AFP journalists saw.

Djokovic, a nine-time Australian Open champion, jetted into the country six days ago carrying a medical exemption from vaccination due to a positive coronavirus test on December 16 last year.

After overnight questioning at Melbourne airport, border officials decided the exemption was not valid, cancelled his visa and transferred him to a detention centre pending deportation.

"I am not vaccinated," Djokovic had told the border official, according to a transcript released by the court.

He expressed bewilderment that the exemption, approved by two medical panels in Australia, was not being accepted.

The limited number of foreigners allowed into Australia must be fully vaccinated or have a medical exemption. The government insists that a recent infection does not count as an exemption.

Federal circuit court judge Anthony Kelly dramatically reversed the visa decision Monday, ordering the cancellation be "quashed", that the player be released immediately from detention, and that the government pay his legal costs.

The government had surrendered the case after conceding that Djokovic's airport interview was "unreasonable" because the player had not been given the promised time to respond before his visa was torn up.

It was "the biggest victory in his career, bigger than all his Grand Slams", his mother Dijana said at a press conference in Belgrade.

"Truth and justice came to the light. I would like to thank the justice system of Australia," said his brother Djordje in Belgrade, adding that Djokovic had been able to train since being released from detention.

Australia's government says it is considering its next move.

Immigration Minister Alex Hawke's office said the judge had ruled on a "procedural ground".

"It remains within immigration minister Hawke's discretion to consider cancelling Mr Djokovic's visa under his personal power of cancellation," his office said in a statement to media Monday.

"The minister is currently considering the matter and the process remains ongoing."

Until Monday, he had been held at the former Park Hotel, a five-storey detention facility, which holds about 32 migrants trapped in Australia's hardline immigration system -- some for many years.

Hundreds of Djokovic fans, anti-vaccination protesters and migration rights activists had rallied outside the centre daily during his stay, scrawling graffiti on the walls, hanging banners from the building and singing and dancing.

On Tuesday morning, there were just two television reporters outside and no protesters.

A lonely cardboard sign read: "Free Novak and all the refugees".

Chalk scrawled on the front of the hotel said: "#gameover free the refugees".

The ATP, which runs the men's tennis tour, said the affair leading up to the court case had been "damaging on all fronts, including for Novak's well-being and preparation for the Australian Open".

The top tennis body said it respected the "sacrifices" of Australians, who have endured travel restrictions and rolling lock-downs for two years."

But it added: "In travelling to Melbourne, it's clear Novak Djokovic believed he had been granted a necessary medical exemption."

Rafael Nadal, one of Djokovic's main rivals for the title, said "it is the fairest thing" for the Serbian to play in the Australian Open.

"Regardless of whether or not I agree on some things with Djokovic, without any doubt, justice has spoken," Nadal told Spanish radio station Onda Cero.

Tennis great Martina Navratilova said on social media: "Though I disagree with not getting vaccinated; at the end of the day it seems Novak did play by the rules as they were for the exemption and was burned. Let him play."

Though it had no bearing on his court case, Djokovic's claim of a positive test on December 16 stirred controversy after it emerged he had attended a gathering that day for the Serbian national postal service, which launched a stamp series in his honour.

And pictures shared by the Belgrade tennis federation showed him at a young players' event in the city on December 17.

It was reported that he handed over cups and prizes to players. No one was wearing a mask.
