Novak Djokovic`s bid to retain his World No. 1 status enjoyed a solid start on Tuesday at the Italian Open 2022 in Rome. The five-time champion brushed past Aslan Karatsev, 6-3, 6-2 in the second round at the ATP Masters 1000 event. The top seed must reach the semi-finals to prevent Daniil Medvedev from taking his spot at the top of the ATP Rankings on Monday, and the Serbian`s all-round performance against Karatsev represented an impressive start to that mission.

Djokovic`s return game was at its relentless best as he broke the World No. 35`s serve four times on his way to a comfortable win on centre court. Later, Felix Auger-Aliassime had his back against it literally and figuratively, but the Canadian star found a way to win. The eighth seed rallied past in-form Spaniard Alejandro Davidovich Fokina 4-6, 7-6(2), 6-2 after three hours and two minutes to reach the third round in Rome. Another Canadian, 13th seed Denis Shapovalov, defeated Georgian Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 7-6(5).

The lefty will challenge third seed Rafael Nadal or big-serving American John Isner for a place in the quarter-finals. Novak Djokovic and other tennis greats hail Carlos Alcaraz after his memorable Madrid Open triumph

World No.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic was in praise of Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz who upset the Serbian to set up a title clash against Germany`s Alexander Zverev in the Madrid Open.

The 34-year-old Serbian was aiming to reach a record-extending 55th ATP Masters 1000 final, but was unable to overcome the 19-year-old Alcaraz, who will try and win his second Masters 1000 crown on Sunday against the world No. 3 Zverev.

Alcaraz won the three-setter 6-7(5), 7-5, 7-6(5).

"Congrats to him. He held his nerve very well," Djokovic was quoted as saying by atptour.com. "For somebody of his age to play so maturely and courageously is impressive. He deserved to win. His kick in altitude here is huge, and it was just difficult to deal with his ball, and I wasn`t feeling my return from that side. He was serving a lot of kick just to put himself in a good position."

Despite the loss, Djokovic enjoyed a strong week in Madrid, earning straight-set wins against Frenchman Gael Monfils and Poland`s Hubert Hurkacz as he continued to build momentum following his run to the final in Belgrade last month.

The 34-year-old, a three-time champion in Madrid, felt that his performance against Alcaraz was the best he has produced this season.

"I definitely played very good tennis, I mean, the best that I have played this year," Djokovic said. "Probably when the disappointment of losing this match passes, I will have a lot of positives to take away from this week."

Djokovic will now turn his attention to the Italian Open, which begins in Rome on Monday, where he will compete as the top seed at the final clay-court Masters 1000 of the season.

Novak Djokovic hails Carlos Alcaraz after Madrid Open defeat, says he deserved to win

Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz came from behind to beat world number one Novak Djokovic 6-7(5) 7-5 7-6(5) to reach the Madrid Open final, where on Sunday he will face Alexander Zverev after the German defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-4 3-6 6-2.

Djokovic, who has yet to win a title this season, rallied from a break down to take the opening set in a tie-breaker and the 34-year-old looked dangerous on his serve as he won 21 straight points on it in the opener.

But Alcaraz, who turned 19 this week, showed resilience in the second set as he clawed his way back into the contest, saving a break point and holding for 6-5 before breaking Djokovic to force a decider.

The crowd in the Spanish capital got to their feet when Alcaraz completed his comeback, edging out Djokovic in the deciding tiebreak to become the first player to beat Rafa Nadal and Djokovic at the same clay court event.

"This gives me a lot of confidence to play the final tomorrow," said Alcaraz after the match which lasted three hours and 35 minutes.

"I know that I played a really good game, and for the rest of the season I think I am able to play against the best players in the world and beat them as well, so it gives me a lot of confidence."

Alcaraz showed his all-round ability throughout in his first meeting with Djokovic, pinning the Serbian back with his huge groundstrokes and using his trademark drop shots.

He struck 51 winners to Djokovic`s 24 as his aggressive style troubled the world number one. Bidding for his second Masters 1000 title, Alcaraz will play defending champion Zverev in Sunday`s final.

Zverev`s dominant serving proved too much for Tsitsipas to handle and he crushed a backhand winner on match point to seal his first career win over Tsitsipas on a clay court. Zverev said he was as impressed as anyone with Alcaraz`s ascent to world number nine.

World number one Novak Djokovic eased past Hubert Hurkacz with a routine 6-3 6-4 victory on Friday to advance to the Madrid Open semi-finals, as he bids for a fourth title in the Spanish capital. Djokovic looked much more like his usual self at the Manolo Santana Stadium on a sunny day in Madrid as he continued to work his way back towards top form ahead of the French Open, which begins later this month.

The 34-year-old was given a walkover into the quarter-finals when opponent Andy Murray withdrew from their highly anticipated clash due to illness and the top-seeded Serb got straight down to business against Hurkacz.

Having raced to a 3-0 lead in the first set, Djokovic closed it out in 36 minutes and maintained the pressure in the second. He got the crucial break at 3-2 and triumphed after an hour and 20 minutes.
Djokovic sent down 16 winners while he did not face a break point from Hurkacz, and extended his perfect record against the Pole to 4-0.

"The first set I think we both didn`t play so great, took us both time to adapt to conditions," Djokovic said. "Second set, I think better quality tennis. I was serving really well. I am pleased with the way I was constructing the point." Djokovic will face the winner of the match between world number four Rafa Nadal and Carlos Alcaraz, which takes place later on Friday, for a place in the final.

Andy Murray has withdrawn from his last-16 match against world number one Novak Djokovic at the Madrid Open on Thursday due to illness, tournament organisers said. Andy Murray pulls out from Novak Djokovic face-off in Madrid due to illness

World number one Novak Djokovic began his quest for a fourth Madrid Open title with a 6-3 6-2 victory over Gael Monfils on Tuesday, improving his unbeaten record to 18-0 against the Frenchman. The result ensures Djokovic remains at the top of the rankings while it earned Monfils the ignominy of having the worst record against a single opponent without winning in the Open era.

"I would probably rate it as the best performance of the year," Djokovic told reporters. "I felt very good on the court. (The rain) interruption probably helped me a bit more than him. "I played one of the most athletic and quickest players that we have in the game, Gael... I know I have to always be ready that another ball will always come back from his part of the court.

"You have to constantly try to have a controlled aggression and dictate the point." Djokovic first played Monfils at the U.S. Open in 2005 but Tuesday`s match was only their second encounter on clay and he needed only one break point to clinch the first set.

Although Monfils fired more winners, he made things easier for the Serbian with several unforced errors as he attempted risky shots that did not pay off. Monfils did entertain the crowd with a few shots worthy of the highlights reel, including a `tweener` that had even Djokovic applauding along with the fans.

But the top seed was well in control of proceedings, breaking twice in the second set before serving for the match to advance to the third round where he will meet Andy Murray. Murray claimed his second clay victory in five years with a 6-1 3-6 6-2 win over Canada`s Denis Shapovalov, who fought back in the second set to force a decider but was crushed once again by the Scot in the third set.

Earlier, Andrey Rublev, who won the Serbia Open last month after beating Djokovic in the final, survived an early scare when he fought back from a set down to edge Britain`s 20-year-old Jack Draper 2-6 6-4 7-5.
Rublev found himself 3-0 down in the decider but Draper suffered from cramps which allowed the Russian to rally and win the contest to move into the last-16. Seventh seed Carlos Alcaraz also had to fight back from two games down in the first set to overpower Nikoloz Basilashvili and deny the Georgian the chance to force a decider with a 6-3 7-5 win. The rising tennis star made the top-10 for the first time last week after winning the Barcelona Open earlier in April, the fourth title of his young career.

KALININA`S DREAM RUN CONTINUES
Ukrainian Anhelina Kalinina, who beat Sloane Stephens and Garbine Muguruza in the earlier rounds, knocked out a third Grand Slam champion in ninth seed Emma Raducanu to move into the quarter-finals with a 6-2 2-6 6-4 victory. Raducanu was broken to love in the opening game of the match and she quickly found herself 3-1 down as Kalinina fired forehand and backhand winners past the Briton, who struggled to find answers to her power from the baseline.

A second break to go up 5-2 gave Kalinina the chance to serve for the set and she sealed it without facing a single break point before Raducanu requested a medical timeout. The reigning U.S. Open champion had been clutching her back between points but she returned reinvigorated and seemingly pain-free to break three times in the second set to force a decider as Kalinina lost her momentum and made several errors.
Both players were neck-and-neck in the final set as they stepped up their game but the Ukrainian made the crucial break at 4-4 to serve for the match, sealing victory when Raducanu`s volley went wide on her second match point.

"I was luckier on the deciding points," said Kalinina, ranked 37 in the world. "You see the draw and it`s only been Grand Slam champions. But I`m getting a lot of experience from this."

Madrid Open: Andy Murray goes past Denis Shapovalov to set blockbuster clash vs Novak Djokovic

World number one men`s tennis player Novak Djokovic is hopeful that things will progress in the right direction at Madrid Open 2022. The 20-time Grand Slam champion and the top seed this week at the Madrid Open, has been eager for competitive match play in recent time. Djokovic last played in Belgrade, where he played four three-setters in a runner-up finish at his hometown Serbia Open.

The Serbian lost to Andrey Rublev in a three-set final but he left the ATP 250 event happy with his performance. "I was looking to spend more time on the court, and that`s what I got. So of course playing finals is a good result and I have to be positive about it," he said in a Madrid pre-tournament presser as per atptour.com."I like a lot of things about the way I was hitting the ball. Of course it`s not at the level still where I wish it to be. It is a process, and I have to be patient. Hopefully, things will progress in the right direction also this week."Djokovic who suffered a shock loss in Monte Carlo attributed the gaps in his game to his lack of match play."But [it was] different in Belgrade than it was in Monaco," he explained of his fitness level. "Knowing that I played four almost-three-hour matches and long, three-set battles gives me enough reason to believe that it`s headed in the right direction."I had a very good week of training now, put more emphasis on fitness and building stamina and endurance because that`s what`s going to be necessary in order to compete with top guys on the slowest and physically most demanding surface in our sport."

World number one Novak Djokovic said Wimbledon`s decision to ban Russian and Belarusian players over Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine is "crazy".

Wimbledon announced on Wednesday that it had barred all Russian and Belarusian players from this year`s championships due to the invasion, which Russia calls a "special operation".

The grasscourt Grand Slam is the first tennis tournament to ban individual competitors from the two countries, meaning men`s world number two Daniil Medvedev from Russia and women`s fourth-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will be banned from the June 27-July 10 tournament.

Djokovic, who grew up in war-torn Serbia, said the athletes had nothing to do with the ongoing conflict.

"I will always condemn war, I will never support war being myself a child of war," Djokovic told reporters at the Serbia Open, an ATP 250 event in Belgrade.

"I know how much emotional trauma it leaves. In Serbia we all know what happened in 1999. In the Balkans we have had many wars in recent history.

"However, I cannot support the decision of Wimbledon, I think it is crazy.

Novak Djokovic wades into Ukraine-Russia war, slams Wimbledon ban on Russian, Belarusian players

Novak Djokovic said he felt drained of energy towards the end of his loss to Alejandro Davidovich Fokina in the second round of the Monte Carlo Masters on Tuesday, admitting that the defeat was almost inevitable going into the final set.

Playing in his fourth match of the season after he was denied a chance to defend his Australian Open title in January due to being unvaccinated against COVID-19, Djokovic was broken nine times and made 51 unforced errors in a 6-3 6-7(5) 6-1 defeat by the Spaniard.

"I`m disappointed. No one likes to lose. We`re professional athletes. This is what we do. We go out on the court to compete and try to win against each other," Djokovic, who has triumphed in Monaco twice, told reporters.

"I didn`t like the way I felt physically in the third set. I just ran out of the gas completely. Just couldn`t really stay in the rally with him. If you can`t stay in the rally, not feeling your legs on the clay, it`s mission impossible.

"So I don`t like that feeling I experienced in the third set but I`m going to look with my team into reasons why that was the case and go back to the drawing board and hopefully next week will be better in Belgrade."

Djokovic said he hoped to build his form for the French Open starting next month, where he will defend his crown.

"That`s the big goal of the clay season," Djokovic said. "I knew a few days ago when I spoke to you... that it`s going to take time for me to really feel my best on the clay.

"That`s historically always been the case. Never played very well in the opening tournaments of the clay season. But it`s OK... I have to accept the defeat and keep working."

ATP Rankings: Daniil Medvedev loses World No. 1 spot to Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal back in top 3

French Open organisers said on Wednesday that Novak Djokovic is allowed to defend his title as the tournament prepares to stage what is expected to be the first Grand Slam without any COVID-19 related restrictions since the pandemic broke two years ago.

France has lifted restrictions in almost all public spaces - except hospitals, nursing homes and public transports - on Monday, meaning the Roland Garros stadium should be operating at full capacity with Djokovic taking it to the red dirt courts.

"As things stand, nothing stands in the way of Djokovic taking part in the French Open," tournament director Amelie Mauresmo told a news conference on Wednesday.

The 20-time Grand Slam winner was unable to defend his Australian Open title in January after being deported from the country in a furore after being initially admitted to the tournament despite not being vaccinated against coronavirus.

The 34-year-old is also out of this month's ATP 1000 tournaments at Indian Wells and Miami, unable to enter the United States without a proof of vaccination.

While that is not required to enter France or any sporting event in the country, French tennis federation (FFT) president Gilles Moretton warned that things could change before the tournament starts on May 22.

Daniil Medvedev pips Novak Djokovic to become World No 1 in ATP rankings

Novak Djokovic suffered a shock 6-4 7-6(4) defeat by qualifier Jiri Vesely in the Dubai Tennis Championships quarter-finals on Thursday and will lose his status as world number one next week. U.S. Open champion Daniil Medvedev, who is currently playing in a tournament in Mexico, will move to the top of the rankings on Monday.

Russian Medvedev will become the first player other than Djokovic, Roger Federer, Rafa Nadal or Andy Murray to top the rankings since Feb. 1, 2004. Djokovic spent a record 361 weeks atop the rankings and won eight tour-level titles, including three Grand Slams, since regaining his top-ranked status in February, 2020.

"Unfortunately, it wasn`t my day," Djokovic told reporters. "I congratulate Jiri. He played better. He just went for his shots. His serve was big. His whole game was big.

"I expected myself to play on a higher level, for sure. I mean, I can do better. But credit to Jiri."

Playing in his first event since being deported from Australia ahead of the year`s first Grand Slam tournament, Djokovic lost serve in the opening game as Vesely matched him stroke for stroke.

Djokovic broke back at 1-2 but was never allowed to settle by Vesely, whose clever drop shots had his opponent scrambling at the net as the Czech sealed the first set 6-4.

Novak Djokovic to lose world number one ranking to Daniil Medvedev after shock defeat against Jiri Vesely

British tennis star Andy Murray has refused to support world no.1 tennis player Novak Djokovic's anti-vaccine stance but believes the world's best player should be taking part in all major events. Djokovic was barred from playing in the Australian Open 2022 earlier this year after refusing to get vaccinated against COVID-19.

Djokovic was held in detention before getting involved in an agonising legal battle only to get deported from Australia. He failed to defend his Australian Open crown as Rafael Nadal pipped him and the legendary Roger Federer to become the first player to reach a record 21 Grand Slams in his career.

After his controversial deportation from Australia, Djokovic has returned to the action for the first time in the ongoing Dubai Championships. Murray, who is also playing in the tournament, told reporters he doesn't agree with Djokovic's decision to not get vaccinated but sympathises with the Serbian tennis ace over what happened with him in Australia.

“I’ve not seen him here (in Dubai). We exchanged a few messages while he was in Australia. I don’t agree with his decision. It would be a lot easier for him if he were to get vaccinated," Murray told reporters in Dubai.

“But I also didn’t like seeing him in the situation that he was in Australia as someone that I respect, have known since I was a child," he added.

Murray insisted that Djokovic's decision was bound to have consequences for him and the world no.1 will have to deal with them. Andy Murray against Novak Djokovic's anti-vaccine stance but wants to see him competing in major events

World number one Novak Djokovic belatedly began his 2022 campaign with a convincing 6-3 6-3 defeat of Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti at the Dubai Championships on Monday.

The 34-year-old showed no sign of rust or mental baggage from the Australian Open visa saga that rocked the sports world, producing a polished display to ease into the second round, afterwards describing it as a "pleasant experience."

It was Djokovic's first match this year after his Australian Open hopes were dashed when he was deported following an 11-day saga revolving around his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination and a controversial exemption he had been granted to play in the event.

Two court hearings were required before Djokovic was expelled on Jan. 16 having spent several days in a hotel, with the country's immigration minister ruling he could fuel anti-vaccine sentiment if allowed to compete.

Back on a tennis court of Dubai`s Aviation Club, Djokovic showed just why he would have been favourite to win a 10th Australian Open crown and beat Rafa Nadal to a men's record 21st Grand Slam title.

After being cheered on to court by the late night crowd, he moved through the gears, breaking Musetti's serve in the fourth game of a routine first set.

Djokovic, watched by his entourage including wife Jelena, got an early break in the second set with a forehand winner.

He briefly wavered when serving at 3-2 and was forced to save break points, but never looked threatened as his supporters, many with Serbian flags, cheered his winners.

Djokovic crunched a superb forehand winner in the final game and claimed victory on his first match point.

Even if he wins the Dubai title for a sixth time, he could lose his world number one ranking this week should Russian Daniil Medvedev win the Acapulco title.

Djokovic, who last week said in a BBC he was not against vaccines but was prepared to miss major tournaments rather than have one, will have a day off before facing either Russian Karen Khachanov or Australian Alex de Minaur.

World number one Novak Djokovic belatedly began his 2022 campaign with a convincing 6-3 6-3 defeat of Italian teenager Lorenzo Musetti at the Dubai Championships on Monday. The 34-year-old showed no sign of rust or mental baggage from the Australian Open visa saga that rocked the sports world, producing a polished display to ease into the second round, afterwards describing it as a "pleasant experience." It was Djokovic's first match this year after his Australian Open hopes were dashed when he was deported following an 11-day saga revolving around his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination and a controversial exemption he had been granted to play in the event. Two court hearings were required before Djokovic was expelled on Jan. 16 having spent several days in a hotel, with the country's immigration minister ruling he could fuel anti-vaccine sentiment if allowed to compete. Novak Djokovic returns to action, beats Lorenzo Musetti in opening game at Dubai Championships

Growing up, sports dominated a major chunk of my daily life. Either it was starting the day by flipping the newspaper backwards, to get the sports updates, or fighting for the remote -- with the elder sibling -- to watch sporting events from across the globe (not denying, cricket remained top priority).

Nonetheless, my father's inclination towards tennis brought me closer to the game. Soon, I found myself gazing at the TV sets for hours, particularly, when marquee players faced each other on the court. The four Grand Slam events became a major part of my calendar year as well.

Impossible, what???

While Roger Federer won titles left, right and centre and made tennis look like the easiest game of all -- it is anything but easy -- a slightly younger Rafael Nadal emerged out of Spain to challenge the Swiss maestro.

Nadal dominated every opposition on clay court, especially winning the French Open without breaking any sweat on many occasions. Slowly and steadily, he gained a good hold on hard courts (US Open and Australian Open). His aggression, palpable energy, fitness, etc. won me over. His training and playing style proved that he hardly ever cared for the word 'impossible'.

As years progressed, Nadal and Federer were joined by Novak Djokovic as the Big Three continue to rule the roost in tennis to date. Meanwhile, I managed to sustain my interest in sports by donning the journalist's hat in the specific beat.

While tennis took a backseat for me, I continued to keep a tab on Nadal's journey. Often, his sudden first-round exits left me bewildered whereas his injury concerns made me restless. Nonetheless, I slowly made peace with the fact that it isn't easy being Nadal and, probably, tougher remaining his fan.

The Spaniard, however, kept himself relevant in the field and competed hard, with major titles still flocking his way albeit at regular intervals.

In 2018, Federer attained his 20th Grand Slam trophy when he defended his title in the Australian Open. In the year 2020, Nadal equalled the Swiss maestro when he clinched the French Open. In the following year, Djokovic joined the two with equal number of titles (20) with a win in Wimbledon 2021.

Thus, Nadal headed into the 2022 Australian Open as a very strong contender to become the first male tennis player to get to 21 major titles. Of course, World No. 1 Novak Djokovic's deportation back to his home country (Serbia) before the Aus Open -- due to Covid-19 vaccination row -- helped Nadal's cause. On the other hand, Federer wasn't taking part in the showpiece event. Thus, it seemed as if the stars were aligned to see him recreate his unimaginable magic on-court.

However, nothing comes easy when you are Rafael Nadal. His fans are also used to seeing him sweat hard, change (tight) t-shirts during lengthy matches, grunt loudly before winning big. A similar script unfolded for the tennis superstar when he faced Russia's Daniil Medvedev in this year's Aus Open final at Melbourne Park on January 30.

Luckily, I was glued to the TV set on that Sunday afternoon -- enjoying a peaceful week-off -- to watch the summit clash. Being on-off helped me immensely as the mental pressure was set to grow manifold.

Down but never out...

In a flash, Nadal lost the opening two sets. The aces were far and few in between. Medvedev was breaking his serve as it seemed all lost. Having grown up watching his relentless energy, never-say-never attitude until the last point, power-hitting and turning into an aggressor during tougher tides, I still had hopes on Nadal. However, they were falling apart with each point lost.

A big player keeps fighting on as he, or she, knows even a small moment can shift the momentum in their favour. Nadal has time and again done that. While I feared the pattern would catch up with him, the veteran proved that one who believes in himself, or herself, doesn't fear the impossible. All of a sudden, he earned a few good points whereas Medvedev lost the plot amid lack of crowd support; bringing the Spanish player back in contention.

The 35-year-old won the third set and came from behind to win the final two. Eventually, Nadal won 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 to stun the sporting fraternity. While the social media fanclubs will only keep a count on the Big Three's titles, Nadal remains unfazed despite becoming the first man to reach the magical 21-Grand Slam title mark.

At 35, Nadal continues to give me goosebumps. Rafael Nadal madness: The joy and struggles of being his fan

World No. 1 player Novak Djokovic had created a huge storm ahead of the 2022 Australian Open. The Serbian had arrived in Australia with a Covid-19 vaccine exemption, however, landed in a huge controversy when he was sent to an immigration hotel in Melbourne (for not taking a jab). After he won the first legal battle versus the Australian government by confirming he had tested positive for Covid-19 recently in December 2021 -- medical policies in Australia allowed the ones who have contracted the deadly virus to get an exemption from the vaccine for a period of 6 months -- he was eventually deported back to his country courtesy the immigration minister Alex Hawke.

Hawke used his powers to revoke Djokovic's visa suggesting that Djokovic staying in the country could lead to 'civil unrest' and harm the nation's relentless vaccination drive. Thus, the three-judge panel unanimously decided to reject the tennis superstar's appeal against visa cancellation and he was forced to return back home.

Following all this, the Serbian missed the Aus Open 2022 and has now broken his silence on the vaccine row. The 34-year-old has stated that he is not against vaccination but is ready to miss the French Open and Wimbledon this year if taking the jab becomes mandatory for participation.

Principles of decision making on my body more important than any title, says Novak Djokovic

Serbian tennis star Novak Djokovic has been added to the entry list for next month's Indian Wells ATP event in California, the organisers of the tournament said on Wednesday (February 9).

Djokovic remained in the headlines globally when he was deported from Australia as he was embroiled in controversy ahead of the Australian Open 2022 when his dream for a record 21st Grand Slam title was shattered.

He was denied entry to the country after his visa was cancelled following a legal battle between the athlete and Australian authorities. His stance of not getting the coronavirus (COVID-19) vaccine has been criticised.

Now, the Indian Wells ATP event organisers said in a statement that valid proof of full vaccination would be required for entry into the venue.

The statement added: "The guidelines for the players are governed by the protocols established by ... the WTA and ATP, as well as any restrictions established by the United States of America in regard to the vaccination status of international travellers entering the country."

Although, he could have trouble even getting into the United States, because foreign air travellers have had to be fully vaccinated since November last year and provide proof before boarding flights, with limited exceptions.

The Indian Wells tournament is scheduled to be held from March 9 to March 20.

The entry list also includes 2022 Australian Open winner Rafael Nadal and top 10 players Daniil Medvedev, Alexander Zverev and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

After Australian Open row, Novak Djokovic included in entry list for Indian Wells

Serbia`s president on Thursday praised tennis star Novak Djokovic`s "great fight" over his bid to play at the Australia Open despite not being vaccinated against COVID-19. An Australian Federal Court last month decided to cancel the world number one`s visa after days of wrangling over the country`s COVID-19 entry rules, forcing him to miss the Grand Slam tournament and return to Serbia. "Thank you for the great fight you fought in Australia," Aleksandar Vucic told Djokovic during a meeting in Belgrade.

Vucic, a populist who is bidding for re-election in April, said he spoke with Djokovic as soon as he heard about the problems in Australia and told him to come home. "And then I saw how ... he was ready to fight not only for himself, but for his country," Vucic said.

Djokovic, who previously refused to speak about the events in Australia, told Vucic he was grateful for the support, adding he that he will address the public within seven to 10 days. Serbia's state prosecutors have rejected suggestions that Novak Djokovic used a fake positive test for COVID-19 to try to enter Australia and compete in the Australian Open.

The prosecution office on Wednesday said in a statement that it had received a request for criminal proceedings against unnamed individuals who allegedly forged two PCR certificates, which were later used by Djokovic to apply for a medical exemption from vaccination when entering Australia.

The prosecution acted according to the regulations, checks were performed, and it was determined that Novak Djokovic was tested several times and that the certificates on the test results from December 16, 2021 and December 22, 2021 are valid, the statement said.

Foreign media, including Der Spiegel and the BBC, have reported discrepancies in the serial numbers of the tests Serbian authorities administered to the top-ranked Djokovic ahead of his trip to Australia, suggesting possible irregularities in the way they were issued.

Djokovic's media team and Serbian health authorities did not respond to requests for comment from The Associated Press. Senior Serbian health officials have previously said that Djokovic's test was valid.

Djokovic was deported from Australia and barred from playing in the Australian Open last month after an 11-day visa saga on the eve of the tournament because he failed to meet Australia's strict COVID-19 vaccination requirements.

To enter Australia, Djokovic submitted a positive COVID-19 test issued in Serbia on Dec. 16 for a visa exemption on the grounds that he had recently recovered from the virus.

The 34-year-old player is not vaccinated and the Australian government later decided to cancel his visa and deport Djokovic, saying his presence in Australia could stir anti-vaccination sentiments.

Djokovic's rival Rafael Nadal won the Australian Open for a record 21st men's Grand Slam title. Djokovic and Roger Federer both have 20 major titles.

Djokovic is adored in his native Serbia. Since he returned home, Djokovic was seen visiting churches and attending liturgies in both Serbia and neighboring Montenegro.

On Thursday, Djokovic is set to visit Serbia's populist President Aleksandar Vucic who has been vocal in denouncing the Australian authorities for deporting the tennis star.

For the unversed, Djokovic had missed the entire Aus Open 2022 edition after he was involved in a huge controversy for not being vaccinated for the Covid-19 virus. After a battle between the Aus government and his lawyers prior to the Aus Open, the Serbian was asked to leave the country -- following the final decision of the Australian Immigration Minister Alex Hawke -- which made the top-ranked player miss the first Grand Slam of the year.

Eventually, Djokovic had to pay a heavy price of missing the Aus Open as Nadal has now gone past Federer and his tally, 20 titles each, to win 21 career Grand Slam trophies.

It will be interesting to see if Djokovic changes his mind and gets vaccinated before the French Open in Paris.

No Vaccine No Trophy: Pune police roasts Novak Djokovic after Rafael Nadal wins 2022 Aus Open

On Sunday (January 30), tennis fans across the globe were blessed to see one of the greatest comebacks in the history of the game, or in sports overall, when Rafael Nadal came from two sets down to emerge on top of Russia's Daniil Medvedev to clinch the 2022 Australian Open final at Melbourne Park, Australia.

It was after over 14 years that Nadal came from behind, being two sets down, in a Grand Slam final to beat his competitor and walk away with the coveted title. By virtue of Nadal's 2-6, 6-7 (5-7), 6-4, 6-4, 7-5 win over the Russian player, the Spaniard won his second Aus Open title and achieved most Grand Slam titles in men's singles; i.e. 21.

Nadal also became the second man after World No. 1 Novak Djokovic -- who missed out on playing the first Grand Slam of the year due to the Covid-19 vaccination issue -- to have won each Grand Slam twice (minimum). After Nadal's historic triumph, WION's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted the veteran Indian tennis coach Nandan Bal on the glorious comeback, rivalry between the Big Three -- Roger Federer, Nadal and Djokovic, touched upon the G.O.A.T debate and more.

Not just a 'clay court specialist'

Nandan pointed out how Nadal has moved up the ladder and is not just a clay court specialist. ''If you look at the beginning of his career, you had a guy who used to play 8-10 feet behind the baseline. Today, he is coming in so much. He has worked on his volleys, single-hand slice, etc. He's an all-court specialist. Maybe not so great on grass, but certainly good enough to be on hard (court). He is not being defensive anymore. The last three sets was absolutely unbelievable,'' he opined.

G.O.A.T?

Is Nadal the Greatest of all-time? In this regard, Nandal Bal said, 'During Rod Laver's (an all-time tennis great) time, three of the majors were on grass (Aus and US Open as well along with Wimbledon). That being said, somebody put it beautifully by saying that Nadal is the best on clay, Djokovic probably best on hard and Federer is the best on grass among the trio. But, the grace that Federer brings to the tennis court, both Nadal and Djokovic don't. Even if that is the consideration (for G.O.A.T spot), when you see such a fightback on the tennis court, you have to say that 'Nadal is a G.O.A.T'.''

Will Djoko get vaccinated?

''With this kind of tennis played by Nadal, Djokovic will have to take the vaccine to remain in contention. It will be difficult to beat Nadal in Paris (French Open) with him being in such form.''

Meanwhile, the 62-year-old coach heaped praise on Federer after once again being asked to choose among the Big Three. ''Just applaud everyone's achievements. Most players still think of Federer as the G.O.A.T. It is worldwide. If it is the grace of whatever else, he just brings something else to the court. He brings the crowds in.
