It was an enthralling opening day at Wimbledon 2022 as the showpiece event got underway at the All England Club on Monday (June 27). Serbian ace Nova Djokovic got off to a winning start headling Day 1 as he got the better of Korea's Kwon Soon-woo to progress to the second round. Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz also registered a victory in his 1st round clash against Jan-Lennard Struff.

British teenager Emma Raducanu made her centre court debut on Monday against Belgian Alison van Uytvanck and defeated her 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets to make a flying start. Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko defeated Britisher Jodie Anna Burrage to progress to the second round where she will be up against Ukraine compatriot Anhelina Kalinina.

Here is a look at who said what on Day 1 at Wimbledon 2022:

After winning his first-round clash against Kwon Soon-woo, Novak Djokovic opened up on a video he posted on Instagram of repairing a garden trampoline which left his son bemused. Djokovic said for his son, anyone competing in the Wimbledon is almost like a superhero.

"For him anyone playing in Wimbledon is a superhero. He saw these big guys that have muscles, my fitness coach, tennis coach, and he couldn't understand how is it that we can't fix a trampoline and we're playing at Wimbledon," said Djokovic.

British tennis player Jody Burrage came to the rescue of a ball boy who nearly fainted on the court. Here's what she had to say after giving him a drink and some candy.

"They managed to find some Percy Pigs somewhere along the line in the crowd, which he got down and then started to feel better."

Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko got the better of Burrage in her first-round match and is not set to be up against her Ukraine compatriot Anhelina Kalinina in the next round.

"The main thing that I would wish to happen, that we get a lot of heavy weapons. We are here and we are playing for my country, for Ukraine. We just want to remind that Ukraine is in trouble and we need help."

Australia's Thanasi Kokkinakis, who will now face Novak Djokovic in the second round after defeating Kamil Majchrzak in the first round.

"Novak is kind of a brick wall."

Novak Djokovic to Ukraine's Lesia Tsurenko: Who said what at Wimbledon 2022 Day 1?

Top seed Novak Djokovic overcame a dogged challenge from 81st-ranked Korean Kwon Soon-woo and his own grasscourt rustiness to reach the Wimbledon second round with a 6-4 3-6 6-3 6-4 victory on Monday.
The defending champion, bidding for his fourth Wimbledon title in a row and his seventh overall, looked out-of-sorts at times against Kwon, who brought a lively mixture of tennis, from booming forehands to delicate drop-shots, onto Centre Court. Djokovic had not played a grasscourt warm-up tournament and he admitted that did not help his game against a tough opponent, 11 years his junior.

"I didn`t have any lead-up or preparation tournaments prior to this so you`re always going to feel a bit less comfortable than you would like, particularly if you`re playing against someone as talented as Kwon who stays close to the line and hits really clean," he said. "It wasn`t easy. I had to put some variety in the game. The serve helped but at this level one or two shots decide a winner."

The 24-year-old Korean broke Djokovic`s serve in the fourth game of the second set and went on to win it with a drop-shot and a big serve. But the Serb, aiming to win a 21st Grand Slam title, recovered enough of his trademark consistency to see off the challenge.

He secured victory with an ace on his first match point and will next meet either Thanasi Kokkinakis of Australia or Poland`s Kamil Majchrzak. It was Djokovic`s 80th Wimbledon win and he became the only man to have won 80 matches at all four Grand Slam tournaments.

The Serb, who won three Grand Slams last year, missed out the Australian Open in January after being deported because he was not vaccinated against COVID-19. He lost in the French Open quarter-finals to eventual champion Rafa Nadal who is seeded second at Wimbledon.

Wimbledon 2022: Novak Djokovic sees off Korea's Kwon Soon-woo to win 1st round, advances ahead

Novak Djokovic repeated his hardline refusal to get a Covid-19 vaccination Saturday as he resigned himself to sitting out the season's last Grand Slam at the US Open. Djokovic was deported from Melbourne in January over his single-minded but controversial stance, forcing him to abandon an assault on a 10th Australian Open title.

With no sign of the US authorities relaxing their rule requiring all visitors to be vaccinated, the 35-year-old Djokovic admitted Saturday that Wimbledon, which starts Monday, will be his last Slam of 2022. When asked if he had completely closed his mind to getting vaccinated, he was unequivocal. "Yes," he said.

Djokovic was US Open champion in 2011, 2015 and 2018. He has 20 Slams to his name, two fewer than old rival Rafael Nadal. Last year, defeat in the New York final to Daniil Medvedev robbed him of the opportunity to become the first man since 1969 to clinch a calendar Grand Slam.

His inability to travel to the United States -- he already missed the Indian Wells and Miami Masters -- will serve as a key driver as he sets his sights on a seventh Wimbledon title.

"As of today I'm not allowed to enter the States under these circumstances. That is an extra motivation to do well here. Hopefully, I can have a very good tournament," said Djokovic.

Also adding fuel to the Djokovic fire is the chance to win a fourth successive Wimbledon title and join a select group. In the Open era, only Bjorn Borg, Pete Sampras and Roger Federer have managed to complete such a streak of dominance at the All England Club.

Novak Djokovic remains firm on no vaccine stance despite risk of missing out on US Open 2022

It is time for the third Grand Slam of the calendar year. After the mega success of Australian Open and French Open, the action now moves to the grass-court Grand Slam event as Wimbledon 2022 is set to commence on June 27. Ahead of the 135th edition of the premier tournament in England, there is a lot of hype for the mega event.

While it will be the first time that former World number one Roger Federer won't be part of the Wimbledon in over two decades, since 1998, the veteran stars such as Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal and Serena Williams will hope to give plenty to cheer for fans. Ahead of the commencement of this year's Wimbledon, Wion's Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo interacted with Indian tennis coach Nandan Bal who gave an early prediction with regard to both men's and women's singles.

MEN's SINGLES

For the unversed, world number two Djokovic could fall down to number seven by mid-July if Wimbledon doesn't go as per plans for the Serbian. A gap of three Grand Slam titles, with Nadal (22), can certainly prove to be a lot for Djokovic.

Thus, Nandal Bal spoke on Djokovic and Nadal's chances in the interaction. The veteran coach said, "There is no question that the next generation is coming closer. It is sad that Alexander Zverev succumbed to an injury in the French Open semi-finals (vs Nadal). Still, there are many others such as Daniil Medvedev, Stefanos Tsitsipas, etc. who have risen up the ranks. It is only a matter of time before they take on the three champions (Federer, Nadal and Djoko)."

"Djokovic and Nadal would probably be the favourites to play the final. I don't see Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud in the semis. Especially Ruud, who has been very vocal of not likening it when he competes on grass. Carlos Alcaraz, on the other hand, hasn't proved himself. Hence, don't think he has much chance on such a surface. You certainly have Italy's Matteo Berrettini as the darkhorse."

Speaking exclusively on Spainard Nadal's chances, who has turned up for the third Grand Slam of the year battling his foot injury, Nandan added, "He is dangerous on any court or surface. He has proved it time and again that he can compete anywhere. Earlier, people said he is a one-surface player but now he has most Grand Slams by any male player in the history of the game. You can never rule him out. If he gets 2-3 decent first, second and third rounds, he can be in great shape if his physical fitness levels hold up."

This year's Wimbledon will see no Russian and Belarus players participating after they were banned following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, early this year. In addition, there is no ranking points on offer at the grass-court event. Nonetheless, there still remains a lot to look forward to in every category.

Will Rafael Nadal extend lead in GOAT race in Wimbledon? Indian tennis coach Nandal Bal opines

It is almost two years since Novak Djokovic left Roger Federer crestfallen by edging a momentous Wimbledon final but as the tournament prepares to return after last year's cancellation, the men's game remains in the Serb's stranglehold.

Since that epic five-set victory, in which he saved two match points and won the first fifth-set tiebreak in a Wimbledon final, Djokovic has claimed three of the next six majors with Rafa Nadal bagging two and Dominic Thiem one.

It would likely have been four for Djokovic had he not been defaulted from last year's U.S. Open -- allowing Thiem to sneak in and finally add a new name to the Grand Slam winners' club which has been ruled by Roger Federer, Djokovic and Nadal for over 15 years.

That proved a mere bump in the road for Djokovic, however, and he will arrive at Wimbledon bidding for a sixth title to match Federer and Nadal's men's Grand Slam record haul of 20.

Should he triumph he would also be three-quarters of the way to completing the first men's calendar-year Slam since Rod Laver scooped up all four in 1969.

Nadal will not be playing at Wimbledon, having decided to rest, while eight-time champion Federer is showing signs that, at 39, the window of opportunity to win one more Slam is closing.

Federer, who underwent two knee operations last year and has played only four tournaments since the 2020 Australian Open, was not his usual self last week at the Halle grasscourt tournament he has won 10 times, succumbing rather meekly in the end to young Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime.

Writing off his chances would be foolhardy, but the main threats to Djokovic might come from a young brigade gradually edging closer to shaking up the status quo in men's tennis.

"Is his level high enough to compete? Not in the end of matches but from the first point? That's the question mark that I think only he knows the answer to until we see him play," seven-time Grand Slam champion Mats Wilander said of Federer's competitiveness ahead of Wimbledon.

Djokovic looked supreme at times in Paris as he claimed his second French Open title -- but there were also dips.

He lost the opening two sets against Italian youngster Lorenzo Musetti in the fourth round, dismantled Nadal in a breathtaking semi-final, but again found himself two sets in arrears in the final against Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Therein lies the problem for those trying to stop the Djokovic juggernaut.

Taking three sets off a player who is teak tough mentally and physically is one of the toughest challenges in world sport.

"It's all about endurance, if you can keep up with the endurance, keep your level there for longer periods of time, then of course that's what is needed in a Grand Slam," Greek Tsitsipas, who will be a threat at Wimbledon if he can shrug off any French Open hangover, said.

World number two Daniil Medvedev will take huge confidence from his run at the French Open, seeing that clay is his least favoured surface. His huge serve and flat groundstrokes will give him a shot, while Germany's Alexander Zverev is another with the weapons to challenge Djokovic's crown.

Big-hitting Italian Matteo Berrettini might be the dark horse, however, after winning the Queen's Club title on his debut last week -- the first player to do that since Boris Becker in 1985. Becker won Wimbledon a few weeks later.

And as crowds prepare to return to the All England Club, home favourite Andy Murray will get the biggest cheers.

The two-time champion is struggling to return to anywhere near his best after hip resurfacing surgery in 2019 -- but few know their way around a grasscourt better than the wily Scot.

Tennis: Djokovic returns to Wimbledon with stranglehold on men's game

Wimbledon champion Novak Djokovic will head into next week`s tournament as the men`s top seed with Russian world number one Daniil Medvedev banned from taking part while Germany`s second-ranked Alexander Zverev is out injured. Organisers of the grasscourt Grand Slam have banned players from Russia and Belarus from playing at this year`s Wimbledon following Moscow`s invasion of Ukraine, which Russia calls a `special operation`.

Zverev had surgery on torn ligaments in his right ankle this month after he was forced to retire from his French Open semi-final against Rafael Nadal. Djokovic, who was unable to defend his 2021 Australian Open title and the 2,000 ranking points he earned due to his non-vaccinated status against COVID-19, recently lost his world number one spot to Medvedev.

The Serbian, who has won the last three editions of the grasscourt major, will slip further down the rankings after Wimbledon as he will lose another 2,000 points with the ATP and WTA stripping the tournament of points. The absence of Medvedev and Zverev means Nadal, who is halfway through a possible calendar year Slam after winning the Australian and French Open titles, to be seeded second.

It also results in Djokovic and Nadal finding themselves in different halves of the draw and they cannot face each other until the men`s final on July 10. The duo met in this year`s Roland Garros quarter-final where the Spaniard triumphed.

Britain has two players in the top 10 seeds at their home major with Cameron Norrie ninth while U.S. Open champion Emma Raducanu is 10th in the absence of Belarussian Aryna Sabalenka.
Poland`s world number one Iga Swiatek will be the women`s top seed with Estonian Annett Kontaveit the number two.

Banning Russian and Belarusian players from this year`s Wimbledon championships was the only viable option under the guidance provided by the British government, the organisers of the grass court Grand Slam said on Tuesday.

The All England Lawn Tennis Club (AELTC) took the decision in the wake of Russia`s invasion of Ukraine and the stand was swiftly condemned by the men`s and women`s tours. AELTC Chairman Ian Hewitt said the government guidance did not allow players to compete at the tournament based on their rankings and there were two available options -- declining entries, or allowing entries but only with specific written declarations from individual players.

"We believe we have made the most responsible decision possible in the circumstances," Hewitt told reporters, adding that they are in regular discussions with the ATP and the WTA. "And that within the framework of the governance position, there`s no viable alternative to the decision we have taken in this truly exceptional and tragic situation."

The move is the first time players have been banned on the grounds of nationality since the immediate post-World War Two era when German and Japanese players were excluded. Wimbledon is also the first tennis tournament to ban individual competitors from the two countries, meaning men`s world number two Daniil Medvedev from Russia and women`s fourth-ranked Aryna Sabalenka of Belarus will be banned from the June 27-July 10 tournament.

Tennis governing bodies have banned Russia and Belarus from international team competitions following the invasion, but allowed players from the two countries to continue competing as neutrals. AELTC also confirmed that COVID-19 vaccination will not be mandatory for players at the 2022 tournament, which will allow Serbian world number one Novak Djokovic to defend his title.

Djokovic, a 20-time major champion, was denied a chance to defend his Australian Open title in January due to his unvaccinated status.

Wimbledon defends ban on Russian players, confirms Covid vaccination not mandatory for participation

The Wimbledon 2022 edition is set to kick off on June 27. While a lot has been said and written about the ban imposed on Russian and Belarus players, the excitement for the forthcoming showpiece event remains high. Over the years, several matches at the All England Club have gone down to the wire between superstar players. THROWBACK: Reliving Novak Djokovic-Roger Federer's epic battle in 2019 Wimbledon final - WATCH

Daniil Medvedev returned to the top of the ATP rankings on Monday, ahead of Alexander Zverev, with Novak Djokovic slipping out of the top two for the first time in nearly four years. The 26-year-old Russian, who was surprisingly beaten by Tim van Rijthoven in the final at 's-Hertogenbosch on Sunday, briefly occupied the number one spot for two weeks at the end of February and the beginning of March.

But with Djokovic losing in the quarter-finals at the French Open, where he was defending champion, the door opened for Medvedev to rise again to top spot. Medvedev is unable to compete at Wimbledon as Russian and Belarusian players have been barred following the Russian invasion of Ukraine. Rankings points, however, will not be awarded.

Zverev climbs to number two for the first time having spent a total of 56 weeks since November 2017 at number three. The German, however, is facing a spell on the sidelines after tearing ligaments in his right ankle during his French Open semi-final with Nadal.

Djokovic's grip on the number one ranking had already been weakened by his exclusion earlier in the year, because of Covid regulations, from the Australian Open where he was also the defending champion.

It is the first time since October 2018 that Djokovic is not in the top two. Rafael Nadal, who beat the Serb at Roland Garros and went on to take the title for the 14th time, stays at number four, now only 245 points behind his great rival.

Casper Ruud, who was overwhelmed by Nadal in the Paris final, reached his best career ranking of fifth in the world, up one place ahead of Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Novak Djokovic slips to third as Russia's Daniil Medvedev tops ATP rankings

Rafael Nadal was ruthless, he was unstoppable and a force to reckon with as the Spaniard mauled Casper Ruud in the men's singles final of the French Open 2022 on Sunday (June 05) to secure his 14th Roland Garros title and a record-extending 22nd Grand Slam. No player in the history of tennis has won more French Open titles than Nadal, who has rightfully earned the tag of 'Kings of Clay' for his unparalleled domination at the tournament over the years.

Nadal has been a dominant force at the Roland Garros. From winning his first title in Paris at the age of 19 to lifting his 14th title on Sunday, he has proved why he will go down as one of the greatest the game has ever seen. Nadal romped past Ruud in straight sets in the final and became the oldest man to win the French Open title at 36, a testament to his undaunted fighting spirit and determination.

Nadal had been battling with a chronic foot injury in the build-up to Roland Garros after making a fantastic start to the year by winning the Australian Open. However, he kept the injury issues aside and admitted taking pain-killing injections in his foot to keep going. He stood with the elusive trophy at the Court Philippe Chatrier in what was a fitting end to an incredible campaign for the Spanish icon.

Speaking exclusively to WION after Nadal's 22nd Grand Slam win at the French Open, Indian tennis great Mahesh Bhupati doffed his hat to the legend and said the GOAT debate should be settled for the time being. Nadal with his 22nd Grand Slam title has now gone two ahead of his closest rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who both have 20 titles each to their name.

"I think it's definitely over for the time being, today when the challengers are coming so close to beating these guys. Winning three Grand Slams titles (in a row) is not a given obviously Novak (Djokovic) will go to Wimbledon as a favourite but three is a long way off when it comes to Grand Slam titles," Bhupati said in an exclusive interview.

Despite being a huge Roger Federer admirer himself, Bhupati admitted Nadal's feat is mind-boggling and that numbers don't lie when it comes to deciding who should be given the title of the greatest of all time. Nadal is currently leading both Federer and Djokovic in the list of most Grand Slam titles won in the men's game.

"I am a huge Roger Federer fan, the guy is a magician on the tennis court. But statistics don't lie and I can't believe it. 14 time French Open champion is mind-boggling to be honest because I don't think a layman understands the physicality of winning at Roland Garros," Bhupathi added.

The former Indian tennis star, who won four titles at French Open during his decorated career, also hailed Nadal for playing with an injury to his left foot throughout the tournament and still managing to lift the title end by beating the likes of Djokovic and Ruud on his way to the title.

"And with everything, Rafa went through and we heard him speaking to the media after the final that he had to take injections in his foot so his foot was numb in the last 5-6 matches. And still getting through that tough section of the draw and winning again is beyond special," Bhupathi said lauding Nadal.

While Federer is yet to return to action due to injury issues, Djokovic will be hoping to close the gap on Nadal when he takes the court at the upcoming Wimbledon 2022 as one of the favourites. The Serb has not had one of his best seasons so far but will be hopeful of turning it around. After losing against Daniil Medvedev in the US Open final in September last year, he lost against Nadal in the French Open semi-final this year.

Speaking about Djokovic's rough patch, Bhupathi said the Serb has had to endure a difficult time both on and off the field but he should not be underestimated. However, the former India star insisted Djokovic would have his work cut out at Wimbledon as it's a must-win for him to close the gap on Nadal.

"The pressure got to him of winning the career Grand Slam at the US Open and he was definitely far from his best. As far as the match against Nadal, that was defintely the best match at French Open. Nadal just found a way to close the match out. I wouldn't discount Novak, he is probably the mentally toughest player we have seen in this generation but having said that he has got his work cut out for him," said Bhupathi.

"He has got a lot of adversities to deal with from not taking the vaccine. We don't even know if he will be allowed into Australia for the next three years. US Open is still a question mark if they are going to allow him to play. Wimbledon is a must-win for him to keep the title race close," he added.

Exclusive! GOAT debate over for now: Mahesh Bhupathi hails Rafael Nadal after 14th French Open title

Rafael Nadal further established his credentials as the 'King of Clay' after demolishing Casper Ruud in the men's singles final at French Open 2022 on Sunday (June 05) to bag a record-extending 14th Roland Garros crown and take his Grand Slam tally to 22. No player in the history of men's tennis has won more French Open titles than Nadal, who has never lost in a final at the Roland Garros in his career so far.

Nadal defeated Ruud 6-3,6-3, 6-0 in straight sets to win the French Open 2022 and maintain his perfect record of being unbeaten in a final at the Roland Garros. He also became the oldest man to win the French Open title at the age of 36 further extending his dominance in the competition.

Nadal has now won 2 more Grand Slam titles than his nearest rivals Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer, who are both tied on 20 each. While Federer is not playing regularly and is not in action due to injuries, Djokovic is considered the favourite to pip Nadal in the GOAT race and surpasses his tally of 22 Grand Slams.

Asked about Djokovic potentially surpassing his tally of 22 Grand Slams, Nadal said it's not something that will bother him. The Spaniard said his happiness will not change even one percent if Djokovic moves to 23 Grand Slams and he stays on 22.

"Honestly, it is not something that bothers me if Novak wins 23 and I stay with 22. I think my happiness will not change at all. Not even one percent," said Nadal in an interview on CNN after winning his 14th French Open title on Sunday.

Nadal also explained why it might not be difficult for someone to go past his tally of 22 Grand Slams but it won't be easy for someone to break his record of winning the French Open 14 times. Nadal has dominated at Roland Garros over the years and enjoys a stunning record on red clay.

"Difficult to say that for myself but, I mean, I always have something in mind that I always considered myself a very normal guy. So if I did it, somebody else can do it. But it's obvious that the record of 22 Grand Slams is something much more possible, that somebody increase that record. I'm sure that's going to happen. I mean, 14 Roland Garros is something, I mean, very difficult," said Nadal.

Nadal has now left behind Federer and Djokovic with 22 Grand Slam titles and has a huge advantage when it comes to the GOAT debate. However, for the French Open champion, the GOAT debate doesn't matter and it's all about enjoying the game till the time he plays.

"I, honestly, don't think much about that and from the bottom of my heart, I really don't care that much, you know. I think it doesn't matter, you know, I think we've achieved my dreams, I've achieved my dream and I enjoy what I am doing," Nadal said when asked about how it feels to be ahead in the GOAT debate with his 22nd Grand Slam crown.

Rafael Nadal further established his credentials as the 'King of Clay' after demolishing Casper Ruud in the men's singles final at French Open 2022 on Sunday (June 05) to bag a record-extending 14th Roland Garros crown and take his Grand Slam tally to 22.

Also Read: Rafael Nadal thrashes Casper Ruud to win 14th French Open crown, clinches 22nd Grand Slam title Nadal also explained why it might not be difficult for someone to go past his tally of 22 Grand Slams but it won't be easy for someone to break his record of winning the French Open 14 times. 'If Novak wins 23..': Rafael Nadal reacts to Djokovic potentially surpassing his tally of 22 Grand Slams

American teenager Coco Gauff rose to a career-best No. 13 in the WTA rankings on Monday after her runner-up finish to No. 1 Iga Swiatek at the French Open. Gauff, an 18-year-old from Florida, jumped 10 spots by getting to her first Grand Slam final before losing to Swiatek 6-1, 6-3 on Saturday. Gauff had never been past the quarterfinals at a major tournament. She made it to the finals of singles and doubles at Roland Garros.

Her doubles partner, Jessica Pegula, moved into the singles top 10 for the first time, going from No. 11 to No. 8, thanks to her run to the quarterfinals. Like Gauff, the 28-year-old from New York lost to Swiatek, who has now won her past 35 matches in a row. Last year's French Open champion in singles and doubles, Barbora Krejcikova, lost in the first round of singles this time only the third woman in the professional era to exit in the first round at Roland Garros a year after earning the trophy and dropped from No. 2 in the rankings to No. 14. She pulled out of the doubles event two days later, saying she tested positive for COVID-19.

The French Open's effect on the rankings for both the WTA and ATP will hold sway longer than usual, because the two professional tours have announced they will not award points this year for Wimbledon, which starts on June 27. That was in response to the All England Club's decision to bar players from Russia and Belarus from the grass-court Grand Slam tournament because of the invasion of Ukraine.
Rafael Nadal's 14th French Open title, and 22nd Grand Slam trophy overall, lifted him one place to No. 4 behind top-ranked Novak Djokovic.

Nadal beat Djokovic in the quarterfinals along the way to the final, where he overwhelmed Casper Ruud 6-3, 6-3, 6-0 on Sunday and became, two days after his 36th birthday, the oldest man to win the singles championship at Roland Garros ? all despite needing pain-killing injections for a chronic problem in his left foot.

Nadal has won both of this year's major titles so far, including the Australian Open in January, but his ranking is hurt by his lack of activity over the past 12 months. He played only two matches between the end of the 2021 French Open and the end of last season because of that foot, then missed more time this year because of that issue and a rib injury.

He won the Australian Open earlier this year to become the first male tennis player to win 21 Grand Slams in his career and is now eyeing his 22nd title at Roland Garros. 'What a battle': Rod Laver, Del Potro & others react as Rafael Nadal beats Novak Djokovic at French Open 2022

World number one Novak Djokovic said he was proud of the fight he put up in another vintage contest against his great rival Rafa Nadal in the French Open quarter-final, admitting on Tuesday that he lost to a better player.
Djokovic, the 35-year-old winner of 20 Grand Slam titles, conceded an early break to Nadal in each of the first three sets and had two set points in the fourth. But the Spaniard clinched the four-hour, 12-minute contest in the tiebreaker.

"I gave my best," Djokovic told reporters after his 6-2 4-6 6-2 7-6(4) defeat. "I know I could have played better. I`m proud of fighting and staying till the last shot.

"I lost to a better player today. Had my chances. Didn`t use them. That`s it. You know, over four hours` battle, and I have to accept this defeat."

Djokovic defeated Nadal, who has won 13 of his men`s record 21 Grand Slam titles on the Parisian clay, in last year`s semi-finals at Roland Garros before lifting the Musketeers` Cup for a second time in his career.

Nadal arrived in Paris this year after two injuries that had hampered his preparations and came into Tuesday`s contest following a tough five-set win in his last match. But he still found the stamina to beat Djokovic in their 59th career meeting.

In contrast, Djokovic picked up an ATP 1000 title in Rome before arriving at Roland Garros and had not lost a set in his previous rounds at the clay-court Grand Slam.

The Serb congratulated Nadal for the victory and said he was not surprised by his opponent`s physical fitness during the long battle under the lights of Court Philippe Chatrier.

"He was a better player I think in important moments," Djokovic said. "Started very well. I didn`t start so great ... I was gaining momentum as I was coming back in the second set, managed to win the second set, and I thought, `Okay, I`m back in the game.

"But then he had another two, three fantastic games at the beginning of the third. He was just able to take his tennis to another level in those, particularly moments at the beginning of all sets, actually, except the fourth.

"I had my chances. Just one or two shots. Could have taken me into a fifth. Then it`s really anybody`s match. But again, he showed why he`s a great champion. Staying there mentally tough and finishing the match the way he did. Congrats to him and his team. No doubt he deserved it."

Rafael Nadal vs Novak Djokovic, Live streaming: When and where to watch French Open's high-voltage QF match?

Rafa Nadal overcame a sluggish start and a stiff challenge from Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime with an enthralling 3-6 6-3 6-2 3-6 6-3 win on Sunday to set up a mouth-watering quarter-final with world number one Novak Djokovic. This was only the third time in his 112 matches that Nadal was taken to the fifth set at Roland Garros and he ensured he kept his blemish-free record intact, wrapping up the win in four hours and 21 minutes to wild applause from the crowd.

Nadal will hope he can recover in time from the gruelling contest for his next outing, where the reigning champion awaits for their 59th career showdown. The Spaniard, who will turn 36 on Friday, has lifted the Musketeers` Cup a record 13 times but was ousted in the semi-finals last year by Djokovic.

Djokovic completed his victory against Diego Schwartzman on Court Suzanne Lenglen shortly before his long-time rival started his match and the Serb is yet to lose a set in his four rounds.

"We know each other well," Nadal said of Djokovic. "We have a lot of history together. He came here after winning in Rome. For me, it was not an ideal situation to arrive here. But here we are. We are at Roland Garros, it is my favourite place without a doubt.

"The only thing I can tell you, I am going to be focused and try my best. The only thing I can guarantee is that I am going to fight until the end," added the Spaniard who converted only six of his 22 breakpoint chances in the match.
The clash on Court Philippe Chatrier was the second meeting between Nadal and Auger-Aliassime but the first since Toni Nadal began working with the Canadian in 2021.

`Uncle Toni` was part of Nadal`s team for the majority of his record 21 Grand Slam singles titles, and the buildup to the contest was dominated by talk of the 61-year-old coaching Auger-Aliassime against his nephew.

Toni Nadal did not sit in the Canadian`s box and chose a neutral seat and he would have been pleased with Auger-Aliassime`s performance during the opening set. The 21-year-old showed immense grit and incredible athleticism to win the opening set, earning applause from Nadal on one point when he jumped to make a backhand overhead volley.

Nadal wasted six breakpoint opportunities in the first set but cut down on his errors in the second and made his chance count in the eighth game to break his opponent and level the contest at 1-1.

Nadal got the early break of serve in the third when Auger-Aliassime missed a couple of overhead volleys and another break in the seventh sealed the set and a 2-1 lead for the left-hander. But the Canadian refused to go away.

After an early trade of service breaks, Auger-Aliassime broke Nadal`s delivery a second time to take the contest to a deciding fifth set. The last time Nadal played a five-setter at Roland Garros was in the 2013 semi-final when he beat Djokovic.

The Spaniard still had enough left in his tank to clinch the deciding break against Auger-Aliassime in the eighth game and then held his serve, sealing the contest on his first match point with a winner. "It was a very important victory for me without doubt," Nadal said.

French Open 2022: Rafael Nadal beats Felix Auger-Aliassime in thriller to set up Novak Djokovic date

Tuesday`s highly-anticipated French Open quarter-final between world number one Novak Djokovic and 13-time champion Rafa Nadal has been scheduled to be played during the controversial night session despite the Spaniard expressing reservations against it. The night session, for which Amazon Prime has exclusive broadcasting rights in France, starts at 9 p.m. local time and was introduced for the first time at the 2021 edition of the claycourt major.

"I don`t like night sessions on clay. I am very clear with that," Nadal, who enjoys a near mythical status at Roland Garros, where he has a statue erected in his honour, told reporters last week. "I don`t like to play on clay during the night because humidity is higher, the ball is slower and there can be very heavy conditions especially when it`s cold. "I think that makes a big difference on the way you play tennis on clay during the night and during the day."

Teen sensation Carlos Alcaraz and Alexander Zverev have both said they would not want their quarter-final, also on Tuesday, to be scheduled during the night session. The match between the Spaniard and the German third seed was put as the third one on Court Philippe Chatrier.

The Djokovic-Nadal rivalry is such a hot bill that usual rules tend not to apply when the two heavyweights face each other at the French Open. Last year, the COVID-19 curfew was pushed back to allow fans to stay longer at Roland Garros when Djokovic knocked Nadal out in the semi-finals and this year, the match will be broadcast for free on Prime Video, organisers said.

Asked about his choice during a TV interview Djokovic said with a smile: "I can only say that Rafa and I would make different applications." "As top players, we do have requests, but those requests are not always accepted," he told reporters. "The tournament director, along with TV, broadcasters, I think in the end of the day that`s who decides... TV, whether they want your match, day or night.

"You just have to adjust to that. Obviously, depending on who you play, sometimes it`s favourable to play night; sometimes day. There is no standard or no formula that works always."

French Open: Novak Djokovic beats Diego Schwartzman to enters QFs, Coco Gauff ousts Elise Mertens

Rafa Nadal hammered Dutch 26th seed Botic van de Zandschulp 6-3 6-2 6-4 in the French Open third round on Friday to remain on course for a potential mouth-watering showdown against world number one Novak Djokovic in the quarter-finals. Nadal has 13 Roland Garros titles among his 21 majors -- the highest among men -- but the Spaniard was denied last year when he went down in the semi-finals to eventual champion Djokovic.

Around the same time on nearby Court Philippe Chatrier, the Serb also put on a prolific display to book his spot in the fourth round with a 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over Slovenia`s Aljaz Bedene to stay in the hunt for a record-equalling 21st major. While Djokovic will next meet Argentine Diego Schwartzman, Nadal will take on Canadian ninth seed Felix Auger-Aliassime before their potential clash in the last eight.

Van de Zandschulp began the match on a strong footing, breaking Nadal`s serve in the first game, but the Spaniard`s delivery looked almost impregnable for the remainder of the contest on Court Suzanne Lenglen.
In his first career meeting against the Dutchman, Nadal dictated terms from way behind the baseline, absorbing his opponent`s power and then bringing out his venomous forehand when required.

Van de Zandschulp, currently at a career-high ranking of 29th, staged a brief fightback in the third set when he won three games in a row from 4-0 down but Nadal, who will turn 36 next week, had the cushion to not be threatened. Nadal broke the 26-year-old`s service twice in each of the three sets, hit 25 winners while keeping a lid on his unforced errors. The left-hander closed out the contest with an overhead smash down the middle on his second match point.

"I had my chance with a break point for 5-0 then match was over but he made a great second serve," Nadal said on court. ALSO READ | French Open: Stefanos Tsitsipas survives Zdenek Kolar scare to enter third round in Paris Van de Zandschulp began the match on a strong footing, breaking Nadal`s serve in the first game, but the Spaniard`s delivery looked almost impregnable for the remainder of the contest on Court Suzanne Lenglen. "Then I played a bad game with my serve and he started to play aggressive and you feel a bit of nerves to finish the match. "Straight sets, it was my best match of the tournament for two sets and a half."

French Open: Spaniard Rafael Nadal stays on course for possible face-off with Novak Djokovic in quarters

World number one Novak Djokovic completed a solid 6-2 6-3 7-6(4) victory over Slovakia`s Alex Molcan in the second round of the French Open on Wednesday to keep his title defence and quest for a record-equalling 21st Grand Slam on track. With Djokovic unable to defend his Australian Open title due to his refusal to be vaccinated against COVID-19, Spaniard Rafa Nadal broke a three-way tie for the most Grand Slam titles with the Serb and Roger Federer by winning the Melbourne Park major at the start of the year.

Yet a successful rerun of his 2021 Roland Garros campaign, when he beat 13-time French Open winner Nadal in the semi-finals, will lift Djokovic alongside his great rival. On a blustery day on Court Suzanne Lenglen, the 35-year-old Djokovic cruised through the opening two sets, breaking Molcan`s serve three times without giving the Slovakian a single opportunity on his own delivery.

The 24-year-old Molcan, trained by Djokovic`s former long-time coach Marian Vajda, was ranked 255th when he went down in straight sets to Djokovic in their only previous meeting in Belgrade last May but since then the left-hander has climbed to a career-high ranking of 38th.

With nothing to lose, Molcan opened up his shoulders in the third set and with some aggressive all-court hitting managed to cancel out Djokovic`s early advantage to force a tiebreak.

But Djokovic then managed to go up a gear and converted his second matchpoint when the left-hander found the net with a return.

Novak Djokovic wins against Yoshihito Nishioka, advances to French Open’s second round

Rafael Nadal has played down his chances of winning a record-extending 14th French Open title but said he would not be in Paris if he thought it was not possible. The 35-year-old says he has never felt less prepared for his favourite tournament after being hampered by a rib injury and a chronic foot problem since winning the Australian Open.

Nadal withdrew from the Barcelona Open last month and lost in the third round of the Rome Masters against Denis Shapovalov. Asked about his fitness at a news conference on Friday the record 21-time Grand Slam champion said: "It is something that I live every day with, so is nothing new for me and is not a big surprise. I am here just to play tennis and to try to make the best result possible here in Roland Garros.

"And if I didn`t believe that this thing can happen, probably I would not be here." His best result during the European claycourt season was a quarter-final run in Madrid where he lost to Spanish teenage sensation Carlos Alcaraz in three sets.

Nadal, however, has made it to Paris and he practiced with fellow Mallorcan Jaume Munar on Wednesday evening. "I considered myself during all my tennis career one of the candidates here, because I achieve tournaments before here. Now on Friday, before the tournament starts, I don`t think I am the favourite at all. But you never know what can happen," he said.

Nadal can only hope that his foot injury will relent for a couple of weeks, especially as his path puts him on a quarter-final collision course with world number one Novak Djokovic. "I think my level of tennis on clay has been high during a long period of time in my tennis career, without a doubt. That`s what the numbers say," the fifth seed said.

"Unfortunately here I didn`t have the preparation that I would like, and unfortunately that rib fracture stopped a little bit the great momentum I was having since the season start. "But in sport, things can change quick, and the only thing that I can do is try to be ready if that change happens.

"Today looks difficult and looks that there are players that are in better shape than me, without a doubt. But you never know what can happen in the next couple of days." Nadal will start his campaign against Australian Jordan Thompson.

World No. 5 Rafael Nadal plays down chances of 14th French Open crown

Defending champion Novak Djokovic and 13-times winner Rafael Nadal are on a quarter-final collision course at the French Open following the draw on Thursday. World number one Djokovic, back on the Grand Slam scene after being deported from Melbourne ahead of the Australian Open following his decision not to have a COVID-19 vaccination, will start his campaign against Japan`s Yoshihito Nishioka.

He was drawn in the toughest half of the draw with Nadal as well as in-form Spanish teenager Carlos Alcaraz and world number three Alexander Zverev, who could clash in the last eight. The French Open will operate at full capacity for the first time in three years after the last two tournaments were disrupted by the COVID-19 pandemic. "It`s amazing to see all the fans who have already come here for the qualifications," said Djokovic, who attended the draw ceremony at Roland Garros.

In the lower part of the draw, last year`s runner-up Stefanos Tsitsipas faces a tricky first-round match against Italian Lorenzo Musetti, who last year took Djokovic to five sets in the fourth round. World number two Daniil Medvedev could take on compatriot Andrey Rublev in the quarter-finals as Russian players have been allowed to compete despite their country`s invasion of Ukraine.

Wimbledon organisers have decided to ban Russian and Belarusian players from taking part in the grasscourt Grand Slam this year. In the women`s draw, hot favourite Iga Swiatek, looking to secure her second French Open title in three years, could face former champion Jelena Ostapenko in the last 16.
Ostapenko was the last player to beat the Polish world number one before she started her 28-match unbeaten streak, winning five titles before the start of the French Open on Sunday.

Defending champion Barbora Krejcikova is on a last-16 collision course with former world number one Victoria Azarenka in the lower part of the draw. Naomi Osaka, who withdrew from the tournament last year after skipping her media duties and citing mental health issues, has been drawn to face American Amanda Anisimova, the 27th seed.

Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal could lock horns in French Open quarter-finals

Novak Djokovic said his seven-year-old son Stefan had won his first tournament on the same day the Serb lifted his first crown in more than six months at the Italian Open, describing their success as a "sunshine double".

Djokovic beat Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0 7-6(5) to triumph in Rome on Sunday, ensuring a perfect week for the world number one before the French Open starting on May 22, but the 20-times Grand Slam winner was equally pleased for his son.

"The journey started successfully. My son won a tournament today. A sunshine double," Djokovic said, adding that his son`s victory at the small club tournament would stick in his memory.

"I wanted him to enjoy it on the court... He was on cloud nine with the family, my parents, my wife`s parents, everybody supporting him. It`s nice."

Djokovic said he would fully support his son if he decided to pursue a career in tennis.

"He`s only seven... He shouldn`t feel any pressure or expectations yet, though he`s going to because it`s part of his family. He`s going to attract a lot of attention if he`s playing tennis, particularly in our country," Djokovic added.

Turning the focus onto himself, the 34-year-old said he was hitting top gear as he aims to defend his Roland Garros crown and go level with Rafa Nadal on 21 major titles.

"I`d rate myself as one of the favourites. I don`t spend much time thinking who`s going to win it or who might have the best chance. I always think about myself," Djokovic said.

"I go there with the highest ambitions. I like my chances. The way I`ve been feeling on and off the court in the last few weeks, I can go far."

'Sunshine double': Novak Djokovic and his 7-year-old son win tournaments on same day

World number one Novak Djokovic claimed his first title in over six months after beating Stefanos Tsitsipas 6-0 7-6(5) to win the Italian Open on Sunday.

Djokovic did not drop a set en route to the final in Rome, having picked up his 1,000th tour-level victory by beating Casper Ruud in the semi-final to book a clash with Tsitsipas - a repeat of last year`s French Open final, which the Serb won.

A sixth-successive win for Djokovic over his Greek opponent looked inevitable as he stormed through the first set with a blistering display of hitting, to which Tsitsipas had no answer.

Tsitsipas`s name rung around Campo Centrale in the fourth game of the second set, however, as an unforced error from Djokovic gave the Greek player two break points, the first of which he converted to take a 3-1 lead in the set.

After Tsitsipas held to make it 4-1, Djokovic then upped it a gear, winning five of the next seven games to take it to a tiebreak before sealing his sixth Italian Open title, and first since winning the Paris Masters in November.

It has been the perfect week for the 34-year-old, who became only the fifth man in the Open Era to reach the 1,000 wins milestone after Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafa Nadal, ahead of the start of the French Open next Sunday.

Djokovic broke Ruud again as he wrapped up victory in one hour 42 minutes and the Serbian will seek a record-extending 38th ATP Masters 1000 title in Sunday's final.

Earlier, world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas reached the Rome final for the first time after the Greek rallied to defeat Alexander Zverev 4-6 6-3 6-3.

Tsitsipas, who will rise to fourth in the ATP rankings next week, will be bidding for his third Masters 1000 title on Sunday.

In the third claycourt Masters 1000 semi-final between the pair this season, Tsitsipas overcame Zverev as he stayed consistent from the baseline and strong on serve.

"Battle of the serves," Tsitsipas said. "Battle of being able to take that first shot after the serve and really put quite a lot of pressure to it, which I think I was able to do really well in the third set.

It will be a repeat of last year's French Open final, which Djokovic won after fighting back from two sets down. "He's definitely in form. I can expect a big battle, but I'm ready for it." The 34-year-old is only the fifth man in the Open Era to reach the 1,000 wins milestone after Jimmy Connors, Roger Federer, Ivan Lendl and Rafa Nadal. "I've seen Roger and Rafa celebrate those milestones in the last couple years. I was looking forward to get to that thousand myself," Djokovic said. "It's been a long time, ever since I played my first match, ever since I won my first match on the tour. Hopefully, I can keep going." Playing under the lights, Djokovic broke Norwegian Ruud's service twice to earn a commanding 4-0 lead as the top seed made a fast start. Ruud broke Djokovic at 5-3 down and held his serve but the 20-times major winner closed out the set. In the second set, Ruud saved three break points in the seventh game before Djokovic broke for a 4-3 lead. "I was able to return a few on the third a bit more than him, get the ball in play, stay in those rallies, not give away much. Novak Djokovic beats Casper Ruud to bag 1,000th career win, reaches Italian Open final

Top seed Novak Djokovic beat Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime 7-5 7-6(1) to reach the semi-finals of the Italian Open on Friday and move within one win of 1,000 career victories. By reaching the semis in Rome the Serb also retained his world number one ranking and avoided surrendering the top spot to Russian Daniil Medvedev for the second time this year.

Djokovic and Auger-Aliassime were neck and neck until the Serb broke to lead 5-3 but the eighth seed fought back.
It proved only a blip though as Djokovic wrapped up the opening set in style.

The 21-year-old Aliassime was applauded by Djokovic for his display of endurance in rallies but again fell 5-3 behind, only to drag himself back into the contest again.

Having forced a tiebreak though, Aliassime was no match for Djokovic who found another gear when required.
Djokovic will next face Norwegian fifth seed Casper Ruud who continued his good form on European clay as claimed a hard-fought 7-6(7) 7-5 win against Canada`s Denis Shapovalov.

"He has the lethal serve honestly... It was not easy for me at all to return. He`s also returning well, moving well. He`s a very complete player," Djokovic told reporters.

"I was a set and 5-2, match point, serving for the match. Credit to him for fighting back. Amazing atmosphere as well tonight."

World number three Alexander Zverev remained on course to claim his first title of the season after overcoming Cristian Garin to set up a semi-final showdown with Stefanos Tsitsipas, who saw off home favourite Jannik Sinner.

Zverev, who won the title in Rome in 2017, eased into the last four with a 7-5 6-2 win over Garin in the pair`s first meeting since the Chilean upset him on home soil en route to winning the ATP 250 event in Munich three years ago.

Garin, the only unseeded player remaining, had the first break point of the match at 3-2 but Zverev squirmed his way out of it and broke his 25-year-old opponent to take a 4-3 lead and, after some poor shot selection, closed out a gritty opening set.

Zverev comfortably won the second set after Garin dropped serve in the opening game.

"I think it was a high level match, at times it wasn`t pretty tennis but I got the job done and that`s the most important thing," said Zverev, who is yet to drop a set in Rome.

Tsitsipas kept his composure in front of a raucous crowd to hold off Sinner for a 7-6(5) 6-2 victory. In an entertaining opening set lasting nearly an hour and a half, Tsitsipas raced to a 3-0 lead and Sinner battled back to draw level before the Greek edged it on the tiebreak.

Tsitsipas cruised through the second set and, after a stoppage in play at match point when a spectator fell ill, dealt with Sinner`s miscalculated drop shot to triumph. The 23-year-old beat Zverev in Monte Carlo before clinching the title in April before the German avenged his defeat in Madrid last week.

"He`s a player that challenges me when I`m out on the court," Tsitsipas said of Zverev. "He has a lot of experience on the tour, much earlier than when I started playing here.

"We have similar game styles but he is one of the most difficult players on the tour."

Novak Djokovic retains world no.1 ranking after edging past Felix Auger Aliassime in Italian Open

Novak Djokovic ended Stan Wawrinka`s hopes of stringing together a hat-trick of match wins for the first time in 18 months with a 6-2 6-2 thumping in the last 16 of the Italian Open on Thursday. The 37-year-old Swiss, who had not played for 12 months after undergoing two surgeries for a foot injury, battled past Reilly Opelka and Laslo Djere to set up a 26th meeting with top seed Djokovic in the Italian capital, and first since 2019.

The 361st ranked Warinka, who last won three successive matches at the 2020 Paris Masters, could not cope with Djokovic`s baseline intensity in the first set and was broken twice. Wawrinka showed incredible defence to break Djokovic in the sixth game of the second set but a double break from the world number one carried him to victory.

It was Djokovic`s 20th win over Wawrinka, and 998th career victory, as he bids to become the fifth player to reach the 1000-win mark. "It is great to see Stan back," the Serbian said. "He won two matches here, he is still physically not there, but he is still Stan and can hurt you.

"From the beginning I really moved him around the court and held my serve well. I know what is expected from me next." Djokovic will face Canadian Felix Auger Aliassime in the quarter finals after the 21-year-old beat American Marcos Giron 6-3 6-2.

Alexander Zverev chalked up a century of match wins at Masters 1000 events with a 6-3 7-6(5) win over Australian Alex de Minaur, while world number five Stefanos Tsitsipas battled back from a set down to beat 4-6 6-0 6-3 Russian Karen Khachanov.
