Novak Djokovic downs Daniil Medvedev to claim record sixth Paris Masters title

Novak Djokovic stayed on course for a sixth Paris Masters title with 6-4 6-3 win over American Taylor Fritz while world number two Medvedev tamed home crowd favourite Hugo Gaston to reach the semi-finals on Friday.

Medvedev outclassed Gaston 7-6(7) 6-4 after he clinched a knife-edged opening set.

On Saturday Djokovic will meet Polish seventh seed Hubert Hurkacz, while Medvedev clashes with either German Alexander Zverev or Norway's Casper Ruud, who meet in the last quarter-final later on Friday.

Djokovic and Fritz traded fierce ground strokes in the first set before the 20-times major winner broke serve at 3-4. Fritz broke back immediately but Djokovic`s supremacy from the back of the court finally told as he clinched the opener in 38 minutes.

"I was absent from the Tour for two months, coming into this tournament, and the last competitive match I played was in the U.S. Open final, compared to the other guys playing one or two events prior to Paris," said Djokovic, who lost to Medvedev in the final at Flushing Meadows.

"I knew that I needed to start well, with good intensity and put in a lot of hours on the practice court. But it`s different when you play points in a competitive match."

The pair again exchanged service breaks at the start of the second before Fritz blew a chance at 1-1 with Djokovic down 15-40. The Serb seized control after overcoming that minor blip, winning 12 of 14 points from 2-2 to register his fifth straight win over the 24-year-old American.

"I did have ups and downs. I am not really pleased with the way I closed out the sets. I lost my serve to love (at 1-1), then (at) 5-3, again, I served for it with new balls and lost to love again. Those things shouldn`t happen," added Djokovic.

Medvedev double-faulted to hand Gaston a 5-4 lead in the opening set and then saved three successive set points on the Frenchman`s serve to force a tiebreak as the next two games went with serve.

More spectacular shots and nerve-jangling action followed as Gaston saved a set point with a delicious backhand winner before Medvedev eventually clinched the hour-long set with a service winner which silenced vocal home fans in Paris.

The Russian raced into a 4-0 lead in the second set but 21-year old Gaston, who rallied from a 5-0 second-set deficit to beat Spaniard Carlos Alcaraz in the previous round, won the next three games and got the crowd back on their feet.

But Medvedev then held his nerve and serve, sealing the pulsating contest with a forehand crosscourt winner in a jittery final game in which he double-faulted on his first match point.

Earlier on Friday, Hurkacz dug deep to force James Duckworth into submission 6-2 6-7(4) 7-5 and book a clash with Djokovic.

From Novak Djokovic to Glenn Maxwell: Global stars wish India a safe and happy Diwali

World no.1 Novak Djokovic continues to maintain secrecy over his COVID-19 vaccination status as dark clouds hover over his participation in the Australian Open next year. The Australian Open is all set to be the first Grand Slam of the 2022 season and will get underway in Melbourne on January 17.

Defending champions Djokovic will be entering the tournament as the top seed but he has not confirmed his participation yet owing to the COVID-19 vaccination rules for the players. While the organisers are yet to release an official statement confirming if unvaccinated players will be allowed to take part in the competition, Djokovic has remained tight-lipped on his vaccination status.

Djokovic had faced the heat earlier when he had said he was against taking the COVID-19 vaccine despite having contracted the infection before. The world no.1 said he will be taking the final call after the officials at the Australian Open have announced the rules regarding the vaccination of the players for participation.

“Well, I’m going to decide on whether I go to Australia or not after I see the official statement from Tennis Australia,” Djokovic said ahead of his Paris Masters opener.

“Right now, we don’t have any official announcement or statement. So until that’s out, I won’t be talking about this anymore, because I don’t want to be part of the stories about the assumptions and what-ifs.

“When official condition requirements to travel to Australia and play in Australia are out, then obviously I’ll see what I personally do with that, and also the bigger group of the players, you know, because the situation is obviously different in Australia than most parts of the world," he added.

Djokovic is not the only among top payers who have cast doubts over their Australian Open participation as world number two Daniil Medvedev has also refused to share his vaccination status. “I am willing to play in Australia, but I won't say if you will see me there in January," Medvedev recently told reporters.

Earlier in October, Australia's Minister for Immigration, Alex Hawke had said Djokovic will not be allowed to defend his title at the Australian Open unless he is fully vaccinated.

"You’ll need to be double vaccinated to visit Australia. That’s a universal application, not just to tennis players. I mean that every visitor to Australia will need to be double vaccinated," Hawk had said.

Novak Djokovic refuses to clarify COVID-19 vaccine status amid uncertainity over Australian Open participation

The sporting fraternity have plenty of superstars such as Cristiano Ronaldo, Lionel Messi, Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, Lewis Hamilton, Mithali Raj, Ellyse Perry, etc. All the superstars from the world of sports have immense fan-following worldwide. In today's day and age, it has become a common trend where fans of a particular team, or player, make fanpages on social media platforms and often troll other players, or teams. This leads to fan-wars on social media even though the reality might be absolutely different among the star athletes.

The biggest example on how to remain fierce and competitive on field, or court, and have each other's backs outside the playing arena has been projected by tennis greats Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic. While Federer came into the scene before the other two, Nadal and Djokovic also rose to fame with their aggressive style of play. While Federer remains a class act, Nadal is a powerhouse and makes the most of his strengths. On the other hand, Djokovic has equalled with Nadal and Federer in terms of most Grand Slam titles (20 each). While the trio remain the heartthrob of the tennis fraternity, there isn't much to separate among the famed trio. Nonetheless, the equation between them remains exemplary, giving a fine example of how rivals should conduct themselves off the court.

Australian Open: Novak Djokovic will need to be vaccinated to play, says Aussie immigration minister

Australia`s Victoria state will not do special deals with unvaccinated athletes to allow them to compete at major events, an official said on Tuesday, putting Novak Djokovic`s Australian Open title defence and bid for the Grand Slam record in doubt.

World number one Djokovic, level on 20 Grand Slam titles with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, declined to reveal his vaccination status again this week and said he was unsure if he would defend his Australian Open crown as authorities work out COVID-19 restrictions for the tournament.

Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said he opposed special arrangements to let unvaccinated athletes compete in the state, which is scheduled to host the Grand Slam at Melbourne Park in January.

"On the question of vaccination, no," he told a media briefing.

"(The virus) doesn`t care what your tennis ranking is, or how many Grand Slams you`ve won. It`s completely irrelevant. You need to be vaccinated to keep yourself safe and to keep others safe."

Tennis Australia, which organises the Grand Slam, declined to comment. Victoria, which is due to exit a near three-month lockdown this week, recently included professional athletes in a vaccine mandate covering millions of "authorised workers", without clarifying whether it applied to athletes from overseas or other Australian states.

Andrews suggested the mandate covered international athletes, too. "Professional sport is part of those (items on the) authorised worker list and they have to be double-dose vaccinated," he said.

Andrews said Victoria`s stance could be a "moot point", given the federal government might not issue visas to unvaccinated athletes.

"I don`t think an unvaccinated tennis player is going to get a visa to come into this country and if they did get a visa they`d probably have to quarantine for a couple of weeks," he added.

"I don`t think that the person you indicated (Djokovic) or any other tennis player, let`s not personalise it ... or golfer or Formula One driver will even get a visa to get here.

"If I`m wrong I`m sure the federal government will let you know."

The federal government`s home affairs department was not able to provide immediate comment. Australia`s borders have been shut to non-residents through the pandemic, although authorities have issued visas to athletes and sports staff for major events, including the last Australian Open in February.

Prime Minister Scott Morrison said the government would relax border controls for residents and their overseas-based family members from next month but international tourists and other visa classes would have to wait longer.
Melbourne, Australia`s second-largest city, has been locked down since August as authorities scrambled to contain an outbreak of the highly infectious Delta variant.

Restrictions for the city`s 5 million people will be eased from Friday when 70% of the adult population in Victoria is expected to be fully vaccinated.

Unvaccinated people, however, will remain barred from sports events along with restaurants, pubs and other parts of the economy. Andrews said the ban on unvaccinated fans may apply right through to the 2022 Formula One Australian Grand Prix in April.

"This is here for a while .... We`re not going to be essentially encouraging people to not get vaccinated because they reckon they can wait a few months or a few weeks," he said.

"You can`t wait out coronavirus."

No special deals to allow unvaccinated players at Australian Open, says Official

Novak Djokovic was on the verge of completing a calendar-year Grand Slam, first in male tennis since 1969, in the recently-concluded US Open 2021. However, the Serbian lost the final to Russia's Daniil Medvedev in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 and missed out on creating history as well as going past Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal's Grand Slam titles as the famed trio remain on par with each (20).

During the US Open, Djokovic not only won hearts on the court for his emphatic performances and consistency, the No. 1 ranked Serb also won over his wife, Jelena, by donning the husband's hat with aplomb and doing the dishes in the kitchen after his match. Jelena, who remains active on social media platforms, shared the video of Djokovic doing the dishes on Twitter and wrote, "Novak’s 3rd shift/Novakova treća smena. This is how Novak meditates after his late night match at the #USOpen He’s my MVP in the kitchen"

After the defeat in the US Open final, Djokovic stated at the post-match presentation, "Tonight, even though I have not won the match, my heart is filled with joy and I'm the happiest man alive because you guys made me feel very special on the court. Part of me is very sad. It’s a tough one to swallow, this loss, I mean, considering everything that was on the line."

The Serb will now look to surpass Federer and Nadal's tally in the next calendar year and consolidate his lead.

'For me, you are the greatest tennis player in history': Daniil Medvedev to Novak Djokovic

World number one Novak Djokovic is a match away from one of the highest achievements across sports, with a calendar Grand Slam on the line after he overcame German Alexander Zverev 4-6, 6-2, 6-4, 4-6, 6-2 in the US Open semi-final in New York on Friday (September 10).

Djokovic moved within one win of reaching a men’s record 21 Grand Slam titles and avenged his loss to Zverev at the Tokyo Olympics in front of a roaring crowd inside Arthur Ashe Stadium, with Rod Laver sitting in the front row, 52 years after he achieved the feat, the last man to do so.

He will face Russian Daniil Medvedev in Sunday’s (September 12) final, after the world number two sent off 21-year-old Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime in his semi-final.

Djokovic handed the German his first break of the night with a double fault in the first set but otherwise showed no mercy, firing off 41 winners and a dozen aces across the entire match.

The third set was a matter of survival of the fittest. Djokovic had a 40-0 head start in the tenth game only to see Zverev fend off two break points through marathon rallies, including a 53-shot exchange, before he broke the German's serve for the set point.

Tied at two sets a piece, Djokovic won a 30-shot rally for the early break, but after fending off four break points saw Zverev convert in the seventh game. He broke Zverev's serve in the next game before hoisting his arms aloft to wild cheers from the crowd.

"Yeah, I mean it's a great win," said Djokovic in his news conference. "I'm proud of the fight that I delivered. Yeah, I probably could have played better in some moments but again, I have to be satisfied with delivering the best tennis I possibly could in the most important set, which was the fifth set."

Zverev was tipped to be the toughest test at the U.S. Open for the Serbian. Not only had he ended Djokovic's bid for a Golden Slam - the four majors and the Olympic gold in the same year - six weeks back, the German was also on a career-best 16-match winning streak before Friday's contest.

"One thing that was very good from him is how he served on breakpoints," Zverev added. "Most of the time I didn't have a chance. That was the big difference tonight.

"I feel like every time it was an important moment, he came out with massive serves."

Currently in a three-way tie for most men's tennis major titles at 20 a piece with Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal, with whom he makes up tennis' "Big Three," Djokovic could also exceed his rivals in the sheer number of Grand Slam trophies if he wins on Sunday.

Both Federer and Nadal missed the year's final major due to injury.

"I know we want to talk about history. I know it's on the line. I'm aware of it. Of course, I'm aware of it.

"But I'm just trying to lock into what I know works for me. So I have my routines, I have my people. I isolate myself. I gather all the necessary energy for the next battle, only the next match, the next match.

"I said it on the court. I'm going to treat this match as it's my last one because it's arguably the most important one of my career maybe. Maybe not, I don't know. But of this year, for sure.

"I'll be giving it all I've possibly got in the tank to win this match."

While tennis fans the world over enjoy endless debate over who of tennis' "Big Three" can truly lay claim to the title "Greatest of All Time," for Zverev, the matter was already settled.

"If you look at the stats, if you look at the pure game of tennis, he's the greatest of all time," said Zverev. "Nobody is there with him, because most weeks world No. 1, most Masters 1000s titles, most likely going to be the most Grand Slams at the end of the day.

"And he has the chance of winning all four in the same year. How do you compete with that?"

The Serbian World No.1 will be looking to win the fourth US Open Grand Slam. “We all know what Novak is chasing,” Medvedev said. “The only thing I can do is try to play my best.” Medvedev, who lost to Djokovic in this year’s Australian Open final, trails Zverev 5-4 in their all-time rivalry and trails Djokovic 5-3. “If it’s (Djokovic), after the Australian Open, I’m going to try to leave my balls on the court to beat him,” Medvedev said. Djokovic seeks only the fourth men’s singles Slam in history after Don Budge in 1938 and Laver in 1962 and 1969. (Inputs from Agency)

US Open: 'I’m going to try to leave my balls on court to beat Djokovic', says Medvedev

Novak Djokovic again fought back from a set down to beat Matteo Berrettini 5-7 6-2 6-2 6-3 and move into the U.S. Open semi-finals on Wednesday, the Serb now just two wins away from a 21st major that would complete a calendar-year Grand Slam.

Djokovic, who also lost the opening set in his previous two matches, and Berrettini have met only three times but two were this year when the stakes were at their highest -- the Wimbledon final and French Open quarters -- with the world number one winning both times in four sets.

The 25-year-old Italian had a third shot at derailing Djokovic`s Grand Slam plans on Wednesday but once again could not seize his chance, converting just one of five break opportunities, that coming in the first set.

Djokovic takes another step up in class in the next round, where he faces fourth seed Alexander Zverev, the player who last month ended his bid for a `Golden Slam` by beating him in the Tokyo Olympics semi-finals.

Zverev arrives at the final four as the hottest player in men`s tennis, advancing with a 7-6 (6) 6-3 6-4 win over unseeded South African Lloyd Harris to extend his winning run to 16 matches.

US Open: Novak Djokovic fights back to beat Matteo Berrettini in four sets, enters semis

An out-of-sorts Novak Djokovic scraped his way to a 1-6 6-3 6-2 6-2 win over American wildcard Jenson Brooksby on Monday to move into the U.S. Open quarter-finals and three wins from tennis immortality.

Chasing a 21st major that would seal a calendar year Grand Slam, Djokovic had difficulty getting into gear against the 99th ranked Brooksby, who for a moment looked capable of derailing the Serb.

For the second consecutive match the world number one came out flat and dropped the opening set, something he will not want to do in his quarter-final when he faces Italian Matteo Berrettini in a rematch of the Wimbledon final which he won in four. The sixth seeded Italian will mark a big step up in quality for Djokovic, who has not faced anyone ranked inside the top 50, including a qualifier and a wildcard.

The match got off to an extraordinary start as Brooksby took the first set with shocking ease. Playing for the first time on Arthur Ashe Stadium against one of the all-time greats, Brooksby was unfazed while three-times champion Djokovic sprayed shots helter-skelter, committing 11 unforced errors to just one by the young American.

That was the wake-up call Djokovic needed and he broke Brooksby at the first opportunity in the second set, letting out a mighty roar. Djokovic would win the second but the 20-year-old American made him work for every bit of it, particularly in a grinding fifth game that lasted close to 20 minutes before Brooksby would get the break.

The last American man standing and coming off his first ever five-setter, Brooksby began to fade in the third, going down a double break as Djokovic finally began to dial in his game.

Leading 2-1, Djokovic continued to improve in the fourth and moved clear with a double break and offering zero break point opportunities to his opponent before sealing the win.

Novak Djokovic overcomes flat start to reach U.S. Open quarter-finals

After tackling two U.S. Open debutants, Novak Djokovic faced an old foe on Saturday, reaching the fourth round with a 6-7(4) 6-3 6-3 6-2 win over Kei Nishikori to stay on course for a record 21st major title that would complete the calendar Grand Slam.

Following first-ever meetings with Denmark`s Holger Rune and Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor, Djokovic faced a seasoned campaigner in Nishikori, who was runner-up at the 2014 U.S. Open having beaten the Serb to move into that year`s final.

Since then it has been one-way traffic in the rivalry with Djokovic sweeping 17 straight contests against the Japanese player, improving his head-to-head record to 18-2.

But after Nishikori`s 6-2 6-0 quarter-final thumping at the hands of the world No. 1 at the Tokyo Olympics, the 31-year-old made Djokovic sweat for his victory.

"So far the toughest match of the tournament for me," said Djokovic. "The opening two rounds obviously felt well, played good.

"But the pace of the ball and the speed of Nishikori`s tennis today was just higher than the opening two rounds` opponents that I had."

Usually the headliner under the Arthur Ashe Stadium lights, Djokovic made a matinee appearance on Saturday and appeared unsettled by the conditions as he went to work under a blazing sun.

For the first time this week New York fans, who have not always embraced Djokovic, got behind the history-hunting Serb, showering him with cheers that had largely gone to his opponents.

While Djokovic did not need the fans to get through the opening week, he knows the path gets harder and at some point will most likely need the energy the crowd can bring to get him through a rough patch.

"Arthur Ashe is the place where you bring the energy," said Djokovic. "That`s where you feel this kind of electric atmosphere, particularly in the matches like this where it`s decided in a few points.

"Yeah, the crowd was involved. It was loud. It was nice. I thrived on that."

A tight opening set was snatched by Nishikori in a tiebreak before Djokovic began to settle into the contest, breaking the Japanese player twice in the second on his way to leveling the match at a set apiece.

In another workmanlike effort, the top seed took the decisive break in the third to go ahead 5-3, then held serve for a 2-1 lead.

Now in control, Djokovic would leave Nishikori no openings to hope for a comeback, storming through the last four games of the fourth set to close out the contest in style.

Djokovic now awaits the winner of the match between U.S. wildcard Jenson Brooksby and Russian Aslan Karatsev.

US Open: Novak Djokovic dispatches old rival Nishikori to reach fourth round

Novak Djokovic says being mentioned in the same breath with Rod Laver and battling Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have energized his quest to complete a calendar-year Grand Slam.

World number one Djokovic advanced to the third round of the US Open on Thursday, putting him five match wins shy of completing the first men's singles calendar-year Grand Slam since Australian legend Laver in 1969.

"Being only in the conversation with Rod Laver... is really an honor. I try to draw strength and energy from that," Djokovic said.

"With history on the line, the excitement grows, pressure grows, but experience and understanding of what I have to do on a daily basis to reach the goal allows me to stay in the tournament, so to say."

Djokovic has already owned all four Slam titles at once after winning the 2016 French Open and said that was the moment he felt a calendar Slam was possible.

"That's where I felt this is achievable, it's reachable, I could do it in one year," he said, noting how Federer and Nadal had come close and adding, "Their dominance on the tour made me the player I am today."

Federer and Nadal, both absent due to injuries, are level with Djokovic on a men's career record 20 Slam titles, another piece of history Djokovic can grab by winning his fourth US Open title.

Djokovic spent years chasing both legends on the all-time list and the issue of who is best among the "Big Three" is one the 34-year-old Serbian star says has been good for tennis.

"It's difficult to say who is better. Three of us, we're all so different," Djokovic said. "We have different styles. We have different trajectories or journeys to where we are at this moment. We all had tremendous success.

"We do complement each other. I think the rivalry between the Big Three, it's phenomenal for our sport. So the more traction, the more conversation there is around the three of us, the G.O.A.T. (greatest of all time) discussion, et cetera, the better in general for our sport.

"I hope people still keep on talking about it."

Djokovic dispatched Dutchman Tallon Griekspoor 6-2, 6-3, 6-2 in 99 minutes Thursday at Arthur Ashe Stadium, booking a third-round date against Japan's Kei Nishikori, whom he has beaten in their past 16 meetings.

"All in all very good," Djokovic said. "I'm very pleased with the level of my tennis. All is going in the right direction.

"I served very well. I found the rhythm on the serve. It was important I came up with the goods."

Djokovic said it was nice that he has become one of the major faces on US Open promotional posters around the city, but notes he's the main Broadway attraction with Nadal, Federer and Serena and Venus Williams sidelined.

"That's not going to affect my game," Djokovic said. "But, of course, it's a privilege and it's flattering to see."

Novak Djokovic energized by Rod Laver link, Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal feats

Novak Djokovic`s bid for a 21st major title that would complete a calendar-year Grand Slam picked up pace on Thursday as the world number one cruised into the U.S. Open third round with a 6-2 6-3 6-2 thrashing of Tallon Griekspoor.

Having shaken off the rust in a spotty four-set opening match against 18-year-old Holger Rune on Tuesday, Djokovic was sharper and much more focused against the 25-year-old Dutchman.

Just like his first round contest Djokovic dominated early on but this time the 34-year-old Serb never let his foot off the gas as he registered his 77th win at the U.S. Open.

Only three men have won more matches at the U.S. Open -- Jimmy Connors (98), Roger Federer (89) and Andre Agassi (79). Djokovic, playing his first event since the Tokyo Olympics, found the intensity that had been lacking against Rune, speeding through the opening set in 30 minutes.

"I came out on court with the right intensity, the right focus," said Djokovic. "Better definitely than the first-round match. "It was important I came up with the goods. "I`m very pleased with the level of my tennis. All is going in the right direction."

The highlight of the evening for Griekspoor came in the second set when he broke Djokovic but the world number one would break right back and then hold serve to take the set and a 2-0 lead.

Griekspoor had rallied from 2-1 down in his opening match to collect his first ever Grand Slam win but there was no coming back against the top seed. Djokovic then broke Griekspoor twice in the third set before sealing the contest with his 13th ace.

Afterwards Djokovic basked in the applause of the crowd, something he had not done for his opening round victory after the Arthur Ashe Stadium crowd had roared on his Danish opponent throughout the match.

After beating two young opponents playing in their first U.S. Open main draw, Djokovic next faces Japan`s Kei Nishikori, the 2014 U.S. Open runner-up.

"I have very good score against him," said Djokovic, who swept aside Nishikori 6-2 6-0 in the quarter-finals of the Tokyo Olympics. "He`s one of the quickest and most-talented players that I`ve seen in my career.

"He likes to hit the ball early, protect the line, but I know his game well."

US Open: Sharper, more focused Novak Djokovic advances to third round

Serbian ace Novak Djokovic on Friday said that he isn't a "spoiled brat" after he complained after a fan heckling during his second-round match against Tallon Griekspoor of the US Open.

The World No. 1 eased past Griekspoor (6-2 6-3 6-2) to progress into the third round. However, the Dutch was not the biggest challenge for Djokovic in the second round, it was actually a fan who kept yelling and shouting during crucial moments of the match.

Djokovic eventually spoke to the umpire about the fan and his disturbance.

He said: “When tennis players talk about that, someone who is watching team sports would say, ‘What a spoiled brat’.

“But it’s a different sport. Look, there’s a lot of noise happening on the stadium, particularly in the night sessions. I don’t mind that.

“Even sometimes during the point it happens that people out of excitement, they just scream or they release like a sound or whatever, sigh, whatever you call it. And that’s fine.

“But if someone intentionally does it over and over again, then I have tolerance up to a certain point, then it’s not correct, then it’s not fine. It’s not fair. I feel like it’s not good for us players.”

“I mean, particularly that guy for some reason was calling, raising the sound and kind of screaming just before I would hit my smash, which was a big point. Before that he would do a few times. After that again.

“That wasn’t nice. That’s all. I don’t mind the noise. Don’t get me wrong. I think it’s important for the entertainment, for the crowds, the music.

“I get it. But if someone does it over and over again, particularly when you are at his side, he knows why he’s doing it. The guy that I pointed out, he knew exactly what he was doing, and that’s all.”

'I have tolerance up to a certain point': Novak Djokovic after being heckled during US Open

Novak Djokovic took a first unsteady step toward completing the calendar-year Grand Slam on Tuesday as the Serb laboured into the second round of the U.S. Open with a 6-1 6-7(5) 6-2 6-1 win over dashing Danish teenager Holger Rune.

On paper, the contest was a total mismatch -- an 18-year-old qualifier making his Grand Slam debut against a player chasing a 21st major title. While the outcome was exactly what was expected, the effort needed by Djokovic to see off the fearless Dane, who battled to the end despite suffering cramp, was not.

The match got underway amid a somewhat flat atmosphere inside Arthur Ashe Stadium but the crowd were chanting the little-known Dane`s name after he stunned Djokovic to win the second set.

Aside from that, it was a controlled effort from the 34-year-old Djokovic, far different from the Serb`s last match on Arthur Ashe Stadium court which ended with him being disqualified after swatting a ball in frustration that struck a line judge.

The stone-faced world number one was all business from the start, breaking his opponent at the first opportunity and rolling through the set in just 26 minutes. But playing his first event since a disappointing Tokyo Olympics there were signs of rust and a lack of intensity, particularly in a sloppy second set when Rune broke him twice and forced the set to tie-break that he easily won.

But there was never any panic from Djokovic, who turned up the pressure in the third with an early break to regain control as Rune began to suffer cramp. As Rune grimaced with every step, Djokovic showed his ruthless side, moving the youngster from line-to-line and taking the set 6-2.

Rune was determined to battle his way to the end but a Djokovic victory was now certain and the Serb wrapped up the match by taking the fourth set 6-1.

US Open: Novak Djokovic takes first unsteady step toward calendar slam

Novak Djokovic hesitated to call the US Open a now-or-never moment, but the history-hunting Serb noted on Friday that an opportunity for a calendar year Grand Slam could be one of them.

The fact that only two male tennis players - Rod Laver and Don Budge - have ever achieved the feat underscores just how rare such moments are.

Throw in that a Djokovic calendar Slam - winning the Australian Open, French Open, Wimbledon and U.S. Open in the same year - would be crowned by a record-setting 21st major title and the stakes may be as high as they have ever been for a player at a single tennis event.

"I don't want to say it's now or never for me because I think I'm going to have more opportunities in my life to win slams. I don't know if I'm going to be having more opportunities to win calendar slams. That's why it's a very unique opportunity," Djokovic told reporters in New York.

"At the same time, I don't need to put any additional pressure to what I already have, which is pretty big from my own self and from of course people around me," Djokovic added.

Djokovic has said several times that pressure is a privilege, and the world's top-ranked player can expect piles of it when play gets underway on Monday at Flushing Meadows.

Not since Laver in 1969 has a man won the four Grand Slam titles in the same year. With Big Three rivals Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal out with injuries, Djokovic is a favorite to join that exclusive club.

"Obviously I know how big of an opportunity this is in front of me here in New York, where historically I've played really well over the years. But I thrive under pressure, as well. I've done that many times in my career," Djokovic said.

"This is what you work for day in, day out, all your life, to put yourself in a unique position to win Grand Slams and to make history. I have this chance, and I'm going to try to use it," Djokovic added.

Without Federer and Nadal, Djokovic is aware that the spotlight will be intensely focused on him.

On the court instead of old rivals it is young guns Alexander Zverev, Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas who the 34-year-old Djokovic believes stand between him and history.

"My participation here, without Rafa and Roger participating, I feel it," said Djokovic, who will be back in action for the first time since a disappointing showing at the Tokyo Olympics. "Regardless of Roger's and Rafa's absence, you still have tremendous quality tennis players that are probably right now on hot streak."

Djokovic added, "Zverev, Medvedev, Tsitsipas - those are the three top contenders I see for the title. Everyone wants to do well at the Grand Slam. Anything can really happen."

"I'm taking a bit longer to recover after quite a physically taxing journey from Australian Open up to Tokyo," he wrote on Twitter.

"Sadly, this means I won't be ready to compete in Cincinnati this year so I'll be turning my focus to the U.S. Open and spending more time with my family.

Tokyo Olympics 2020: Star athletes who failed to live up to expectations

Pablo Carreno Busta beat World No. 1 Novak Djokovic in the men's singles bronze medal match at the Tokyo Olympics. That gave Carreno Busta his first Olympic award.

Throughout the match, Pablo Carreno Busta possessed a strong forehand against Novak Djokovic, who looked depleted from his elimination round loss to Alexander Zverev.

He even held a match point on Novak Djokovic's serve during the second-set sudden tiebreaker, yet World no.1 showed a lot of flexibility to save it before in the long run winning the tiebreaker 8-6. He also went on to win the deciding set.

Addressing the Spanish press later, Pablo Carreno Busta communicated amusement at his presentation in the bronze medal match, considering it the greatest accomplishment of his life. He likewise expressed gratitude towards his fans for propelling him to come back from his elimination round loss to Karen Khachanov.

"I think this my biggest achievement. It's incredible," he said.

"After yesterday's loss I felt people's love and support and I had to give my all. I've been able to overcome losing the second set thanks to all the support. It's just bronze but I gave my all," he added.

Carreno Busta pondered the mid-match stagger, asserting that he thought he was done after Novak Djokovic took the subsequent set. He added that it was incredible that he could stick it out in the circumstance and get back an Olympic medal.

“It’s a bronze medal, but for me it’s like a gold. I haven’t won the tournament, but it’s the best title of my career,” he added.

"I came here for a medal, it's been tough but I've got it! For my girlfriend, my mother, Gijón, Spain," he concluded.

Watch: Tokyo 2020 Olympics — Novak Djokovic smashes racket during bronze medal match

World number one Novak Djokovic said he was "not sure" about his fitness for the US Open after pulling out of the Tokyo Olympics mixed doubles bronze medal match with a shoulder injury on Saturday.

The 34-year-old Serb could become the first man to complete a calendar Grand Slam since Rod Laver in 1969 when the US Open gets under way on August 30.

The withdrawal in Tokyo came after the 20-time major champion lost his cool on his way to a surprise 6-4, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 defeat against Pablo Carreno Busta in the Olympics singles bronze-medal match.

He admitted that his exertions in Japan have taken their toll but he still hopes to be fit enough to challenge at Flushing Meadows.

"The consequences physically hopefully will not create a problem for me for the US Open, but that's something that I'm not sure about right now," said Djokovic.

"But I'm not regretting for giving it all because at the end of the day, when you play for your country, that's necessary."

The International Tennis Federation said Djokovic had withdrawn with a "left shoulder injury".

"Ashleigh Barty and John Peers receive a walkover against Djokovic and Nina Stojanovic and win the bronze medal for Australia," the ITF added.

Djokovic had been eyeing two gold medals when he played the singles and mixed doubles semi-finals on Friday -- but less than 24 hours after his hopes for gold were ended -- he was preparing to leave the Ariake Tennis Park without a medal of any colour.

He lost a gruelling match to Carreno Busta which lasted two hours and 47 minutes in suffocating heat, despite saving five match points.

The Serbian sporting icon's best result at the Olympics remains his bronze medal in Beijing in 2008.

"I just didn't deliver yesterday and today," said Djokovic, whose singles loss to Alexander Zverev ended his Golden Grand Slam bid.

"The level of tennis dropped, also due to exhaustion, mentally and physically."

His next opportunity to win an Olympic title will come in Paris in three years' time, when he will be 37.

"I know that I will bounce back. I will try to keep going for Paris Olympic Games and fight for my country to win medals," insisted Djokovic.

"I'm sorry that I disappointed a lot of sports fans in my country. But that's sport, I gave it all, whatever I had left in the tank, which was not so much. I left it out on the court."

'Sorry' for racquet smash

On Saturday, Djokovic brought back memories of his infamous default against Carreno Busta last year at the US Open, when he inadvertently struck a ball at a line judge.
This time he threw his racquet high into the empty stands as he saw a break point come and go in the opening game of the third set, and continued to cut an angry figure, destroying another racquet by smashing it against the net post.

He was given a warning by the umpire after that second incident, but not following the first.

"It was an emotional outburst and it happens," said Djokovic. "You're tense on the court, in the heat of the battle.

"It's not the first time and it's not the last time probably. It's not nice, of course, but it's part of, I guess, who I am.

"I don't like doing these things, I'm sorry for sending this kind of message, but we're all human beings and sometimes it's hard to control."

World number one Novak Djokovic said he was "not sure" about his fitness for the US Open after pulling out of the Tokyo Olympics mixed doubles bronze medal match with a shoulder injury on Saturday.

"But I'm not regretting for giving it all because at the end of the day, when you play for your country, that's necessary." The International Tennis Federation said Djokovic had withdrawn with a "left shoulder injury". "The level of tennis dropped, also due to exhaustion, mentally and physically." His next opportunity to win an Olympic title will come in Paris in three years' time, when he will be 37. I left it out on the court." 'Sorry' for racquet smash On Saturday, Djokovic brought back memories of his infamous default against Carreno Busta last year at the US Open, when he inadvertently struck a ball at a line judge.
