Novak Djokovic hopes of becoming the first man to complete the Golden Slam were dashed on Friday after he was unexpectedly beaten by Germany's Alexander Zverev in the singles semi-finals at the Tokyo Games on Friday.

The world number one had arrived in Tokyo gunning for the Golden Slam -- winning all four majors and Olympic gold in the same year -- after triumphing at the Australian Open, Roland Garros and Wimbledon in 2021.

Djokovic, who won singles bronze at the 2008 Beijing Games, appeared to be on course for an easy victory on Friday when he claimed the opening set for the loss of just one game and then went up a break midway through the second.

But world number five Zverev managed to find another gear, breaking back and reeling off eight games in a row to take the set and take a commanding lead in the decider.

Zverev sealed the victory with a winner to become the first German man to make an Olympic tennis final since Tommy Haas won silver at the Sydney Games in 2000.

Tokyo Olympics: World no.1 Novak Djokovic remains on track for gold medal

Novak Djokovic launched his bid to stay on course for a Golden Slam with a clinical 6-2, 6-2 win over 139th-ranked Hugo Dellien of Bolivia on Saturday, as sweltering conditions in Tokyo took a toll on the players on the opening day of tennis at the Games.

Steffi Graf is the only player to have won all four Grand Slams and the Olympic gold in the same year but the 34-year-old Serbian is three-fifths of the way there, needing a Tokyo gold and then the US Open trophy to match the German's 1988 feat.

The world number one would not have wanted to spend too much time on the court in the heat and humidity and wrapped up proceedings on Centre Court on day one in about an hour.

With temperatures hovering around 33 degrees Celsius (91.4°F) with high humidity, players struggled to cope and did not find much comfort from ice bags and a tube blowing cool air.

"Very tough," Djokovic, who will face German Jan-Lennard Struff in the second round, said about the conditions.

"I think today, from also speaking to other players, was the hottest day so far. It's very hot but also humid. The hardcourts absorb the heat, it stays trapped in there. Not much wind, not much breeze. It was challenging definitely.

"But I'm pleased to overcome the first hurdle and I think I was solid on the court. I can always do better but the first match, I'm satisfied."

Djokovic is playing in his 10th semi-final at Wimbledon and 41st at the majors while his progress at the event has comfortably taken his career earnings past the $150 million mark.

None of the other three pretenders have ever got this far at the tournament.

Only Berrettini has tasted the experience of a semi-final at the Grand Slams, at the 2019 US Open.

Apart from dropping the first set of his opener against British wildcard Jack Draper, Djokovic has been untroubled.

"I feel like I've been playing, hitting the ball well throughout the entire tournament, putting myself exactly where I want to be: semi-finals," said 34-year-old Djokovic who can reach his 30th Slam final on Friday.

"Not spending too much energy. Now I really have to be consistent from the first to last point in the next match, and hopefully another one on Sunday."

Djokovic has only dropped serve four times at this year's Wimbledon and faced just 15 break points.

Victory on Friday will take him a step closer not only to a sixth Wimbledon title but also to becoming just the third man in history to complete a calendar Grand Slam.

It's a feat so rare that it hasn't been achieved since Rod Laver swept all four majors in the same year for a second time in 1969.

"Sometimes things do look surreal for me but I try to live in the moment and take every opportunity I have on the court," said Djokovic.

Shapovalov, the stylish left-hander, has reached his first Slam semi-final by seeing off two-time Wimbledon champion Andy Murray and eighth-seeded Roberto Bautista Agut, a 2019 semi-finalist.

In the quarter-final, the 22-year-old had to mix style and steel to see off Russia's Karen Khachanov in five sets.

On Friday, he will need to have his service game, which has powered 60 aces so far, cranked up to the maximum.

Before this year, Shapovalov had only won one match at Wimbledon while his best Grand Slam performance was a run to the US Open quarter-finals last year.

"Novak is the best player in the world but I think anything is possible," said Shapovalov who has only won two sets against the Serb in his six losses.

Berrettini is the first Italian man in the Wimbledon semi-finals since Nicola Pietrangeli in 1960.

Adriano Panatta remains his country's last male champion at a Slam in the 1976 French Open.

Berrettini has a game made for grass, however, and arrived at Wimbledon with the prestigious Queen's Club title under his belt.

The 25-year-old world number nine is only playing his third Wimbledon but has stormed into the semi-finals on the back of a tournament-leading 79 aces, saving 20 of 25 break points.

"I'm a better player now. I have more experience. I had more matches on my shoulders. Everything that I am achieving, it's great, but it's not something that I didn't expect," said the powerfully-built Italian.

Hurkacz is only the second Polish man to make the last-four at Wimbledon after Jerzy Janowicz in 2013.

The 24-year-old's run to the semi-finals is impressive as he had won just one match on tour between his surprise Miami Masters title in March and the start of Wimbledon.

That dismal streak included defeat in the first round of the French Open to world number 154 Botic Van de Zandschulp and first-up losses in the grass court events at Stuttgart and Halle.

The defeat in Stuttgart was particularly painful as it came at the hands of Dominic Stricker, ranked a lowly 335 at the time.

However, his win on Wednesday was against a far more famous Swiss, eight-time champion Federer.

"Walking off the court realising that I won against Roger was a dream come true, especially here on grass in Wimbledon," said the world number 18 who had never previously got beyond the third round of a Slam before this Wimbledon.

Novak Djokovic can reach a seventh Wimbledon final on Friday, driven on by the desire to capture a sixth title at the All England Club and record-equalling 20th Grand Slam title.

While such numbers might sound impressive, for Djokovic the only statistic that matters is that his dream of joining Roger Federer and Rafa Nadal on a record 20 Grand Slam titles was still very much alive as was the chance of becoming the first man since Rod Laver in 1969 to complete the calendar slam.

Fucsovics produced some gutsy shots to stay alive in the first set when Djokovic stood at 5-0 up with two set points and hung in with the top seed till 4-4 in the second.

But once Djokovic broke for a 5-4 lead in the second set, it was clear that this would not be his day.

Djokovic won the first eight points and never took his foot off the pedal during the one hour 48 minute contest, dominating from the baseline and the net against the Chilean.

The Serbian repeatedly brought Garin, who won his first point in the third game to huge applause, up to the net with deceptive drop shots and sliced returns only to pass or lob him.

In his inimitable way, Djokovic kept a lid on his unforced errors (23) while hitting 28 winners - double his opponent`s tally - and never lost his grip on the match.

He hit nine aces, lost only 13 points on his own serve and broke his opponent five times to stay on course for a 20th Grand Slam title that would tie him with his great rivals Federer and Rafa Nadal for the most major men`s titles.

A sixth Wimbledon trophy on Sunday would also move the 34-year-old closer to the Golden Slam, with the Tokyo Olympics and the U.S. Open to be played on his favourite hard courts.

The reigning Australian Open and Roland Garros winner did not hide the fact that he was feeling at his best.

"Confidence level is very, very high obviously after winning the French Open," he said in his on-court interview.

"That was probably one of the biggest wins under those kinds of circumstances that I`ve played in. Particularly in the second week - two five-setters, two four-setters.

"It took a lot out of me but, at the same time, it gave me wings. It gave me the confidence boost that I needed for Wimbledon and my energy levels are really good. I`m pleased.

"This is the quickest surface in sports so obviously coming from clay takes a little bit of time to adapt to adjust your game and to make sure that you`re at your best.

"So the further the tournament goes I feel like I`m more comfortable playing on grass. I look forward to the next challenge."
