Coming from a long injury layoff, Kane trained a little with the team on their tour to England, preparing himself for the World Cup showdown. As he nears full fitness, Kane expressed his desire to stay with the team and give himself every chance to get in time for most games during the event.&nbsp;

"It's just wanting to progress [with] what I am doing now - the running, the fielding, and also time in the middle with the bat," Williamson had said ahead of the team's departure to India earlier this week.

With Williamson taking his time to get back to his absolute best fitness-wise, he admits to changing his usual fielding position, opting not to stand in the slips if not required.

"We will definitely consider some of that," Kane said. "Where I field is usually at mid-off, which will probably remain the case. Probably slightly better suited to it than the square of the wicket. Potentially some slip, but I won't be standing there if we don't require one."

<h2>Stead on Southee’s chances</h2>

Senior-most Kiwi seamer Tim Southee dislocated his thumb recently but is recovering quickly than expected. As per head coach Gary Stead, Southee might stay out of the XI for the two practice matches, but if he continues to recover at a similar pace, the right-arm seamer could make it to the XI for the game against England.&nbsp;

"Tim's seen a hand specialist yesterday, and the key thing for him is really making sure the wound heals. We're still really hopeful that he'll be available early on in the tournament for selection," Stead said. "He's had five pins put in his thumb... He's comfortable, and he'll be ready somewhere around that first or second game.

"So, it's all gone really well. He's had a check in with the surgeon and a hand therapist. They think there might be a little bit of pain still, but he's a tough and resilient character. So we are fortunate to have him with our squad still," Stead said.

One of New Zealand’s greatest fast bowlers ever, Trent Boult is grateful for being able to represent his country in the third World Cup despite being out of central contract for over a year now. The left-arm seamer of the highest quality, Boult&nbsp;had been on the receiving end on the past two occasions and aims to end the streak and be on the winning side this time during the marquee event starting in India on October 5.

With him returning to the ODI setup in the lead-up to the World Cup, Boult played in an away series against England and is currently in Bangladesh for the three-match ODIs.

Following the end of the 3rd ODI, Boult will travel to India for the World Cup.&nbsp;

Last year, Boult, alongside his former teammate Martin Guptill, decided against signing the central contract, leaving him out of contention in top-flight cricket.

He did so to spend more time with his family and continue to play franchise-based T20 leagues across the world.&nbsp;

“It’s a cliché, but you learn more when you fail than when you succeed. I feel like I’m a better cricketer for that experience,” he added.

With Trent Boult finally returning to the ODI setup after being included in the XI for the game against England in Southampton on Sunday, he picked three wickets inside the first two overs, reminding everyone of what he can do with the new ball in hand.

Considering he and Neesham got overlooked for the centrally contracted players for the past year, and now with them returning just ahead of the World Cup, Neesham insisted there is no awkwardness among the camp as the focus remains on helping them win the World Cup.

“No one gets judged on those kinds of decisions,” he said. “Myself and Trent have talked a lot about it over the last year or so around trying to stay fit and stay in the picture.

“There’s no lack of familiarity with the group. As Trent said a couple of days ago in England, you slide back into the group as if nothing’s changed,” he added.

"Youngy is a quality player. He's been in the mix for us for a long period of time and hasn't had a lot of opportunities, but the opportunities [he has had] in recent times, he's played really well. It's another great opportunity for him to come in and put some performances on the board," Tom Latham, New Zealand's stand-in captain for England ODIs, said.

"We've got seven one-day games and a couple of warm-up games leading into that World Cup, but we're trying to stay where our feet are and focus on these games rather than looking too far ahead," Latham added.

<h2>Finn remains in the scheme of things</h2>

Keeping attacking Allen alive in the scheme of things, Latham praised the right-hander for impacting the innings with his approach. Latham added Finn is a quality player and will get some opportunity throughout the series, giving him a chance to push for a case in the final 15 for the CWC.

"Again, Finn is a quality player. We've seen that in the games that he's played for New Zealand. He's very destructive at the top of the order, and obviously he might get some opportunities throughout this series at some point… Guys will get opportunities through the series, which is great for us, to get guys more experience against quality sides, and hopefully, if they are required throughout a World Cup, they're ready to go," Latham added.

Meanwhile, New Zealand came from behind to level the four-match T20Is 2-2.

Kane's progress is encouraging, and head coach Gary Stead feels the same, saying they would give every opportunity to the batter to prove his fitness for the marquee event.

"[We've] got about two weeks from now until we name that side," New Zealand head coach Gary Stead said. "Going to give him every chance and use that full amount of time.

"He's in full rehab mode; he's back batting in the nets again, which is great to see. He's progressing really well, but again, there's a lot of work for him still to do to make sure he gets to where we need him to be,” the head coach added.

<h2>‘Kane can still travel to India'</h2>

Given what he brings to the table, the New Zealand camp will perhaps do everything possible to tag him along. Even if it means Kane getting included despite not clearing the fitness test, and then by the time the World Cup begins, he could attain complete fitness. Or, he can be part of the travelling reserves – but in that case, someone from the original squad needs to get injured for Kane to get roped into the side team for the CWC matches.

"They are all the things we are weighing up right now," Stead said. "There's a chance that even if Kane was named that he wouldn't be available right at the start of the tournament. But he also might be, and he also might not be ready.

"It's still a little bit of crystal-ball gazing [about] where he will be at. Yes, of course, we want him at the World Cup, but there is that bigger picture in mind that we want Kane Williamson fit for the rest of his career,” Stead said.

Meanwhile, New Zealand will travel to England for four T20Is and as many ODIs, starting August 30.

Both these teams will face off in the World Cup 2023 opener on October 5 at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad.

A week after Kane posted a video of him facing some throw downs in the nets, he claims to be taking baby steps in his recovery process, thus remaining hopeful of attaining complete fitness before the CWC'23 squad announcement date. Having undergone surgery for a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament [ACL] in his right knee in April, Kane got ruled out for six to eight months.

Speaking with the media personnel&nbsp;on the sidelines of a training session at the Bay Oval, Kane said he is happy with his recovery progress, and even though participating at the World Cup means the world to him, it still remains guesswork.&nbsp;

Kane said he still has a lot of work to do and continues to follow the programme laid by the physiotherapists and New Zealand Cricket’s support staff.

"There's a lot of work to do. I am just really following the programme, with the professionals for physio, the support staff and New Zealand Cricket. And it's tough, because you do have some good days, and then you have a few variable ones,” he added.

Meanwhile, as per a report in the Geo News earlier in Pakistan, the Islamabad Police refused to provide security, citing reasons that they don’t have resources for the same.

"The police does not have resources for providing security," the sources in the Police department told Geo News.

The sources further claimed that the police force is busy performing duties at free flour distribution centres, ongoing census, and other places that are related to the holy month of Ramadan.

While off the ten slated matches, five T20Is and as many ODIs, three of them – including two T20Is and one ODI will be played at the Pindi stadium; the touring New Zealand team will stay at a hotel in the capital city and will travel to Pindi for those games.

Following the two-match Test series against New Zealand in December-January early this year, the white-ball leg is about to begin in Lahore on April 14th. With the first three T20I games to take place in Lahore, the action will move to Rawalpindi for the next three matches before the final four games take place at the National Stadium in Karachi.

Given the senior Kiwi players have opted out of the tour owing to their participation in the Indian Premier League, New Zealand will be sending a relatively younger squad on this tour. Experienced campaigner Tom Latham will lead the side in Kane Williamson’s absence, who while playing in Gujarat Titans' first match against CSK injured his leg, and is now ruled out for an indefinite time.

While the curator had two black soil pitches ready to go, the request by the top Indian management threw a spanner in the plans as the pitch could not be readied in time. “At the behest of a last-minute request from team management three days prior to the match, the curator had been asked to prepare a fresh pitch made of red soil instead. The new pitch could not be adequately prepared on short notice, and led to even slower conditions," said the publication. But over the years I think that England, Australia, and New Zealand have learnt to play spin a lot better than even the subcontinental sides," Sangakkara explained.&nbsp;

Having last appeared in the home series against India following the World T20 in Australia, Milne ended up feeling uneasiness in his hamstring that saw him miss a couple of Ford Trophy matches for Wellington Fireworks in December as well.

Though he appeared in the first two games of the Dream11 Super Smash season, Milne doesn’t feel right about playing six ODIs in the span of 16 days during the subcontinent leg.

After a mutual agreement, it was decided that Milne will withdraw his name from the upcoming white-ball series, and Blair Tickner - who is currently in Pakistan with the Test team, will replace him.

Speaking at length on a decision that wasn’t easy to take, New Zealand’s selector Gavin Larsen said,

Adam was very up front with us about his concerns around the lack of one-day bowling loading for the upcoming tours,” Larsen said in a New Zealand Cricket statement.

“After chatting to him, we agreed his preparation leading into the tour wouldn't be sufficient for him to cope with the demands of back-to-back, three-game ODI series. We appreciate his honesty and his genuine desire not to let the team down,” Larsen added.

Talking about Milne’s replacement Tickner, who has played six ODIs so far, Larsen said Blair is someone who call bowl well in the middle overs, and with his ability to hit the deck hard, it makes him a similar prospect to that of Milne.

“Blair's skills at bowling through the middle and his ability to hit the pitch hard make him a similar prospect to what Adam offered us. The fact he's already in Pakistan experiencing the conditions is an added bonus,” Larsen said.

While the ODI series against New Zealand will begin on January 9th, India’s white-ball tour will kick-start on January 18th.

Indian cricket legend Sunil Gavaskar believes that rain helped India avoid the blues against New Zealand in the recently concluded ODI series.&nbsp;

Gavaskar, in his column in Time of India said Indian batters were once again found out on the bouncy New Zealand pitches and if it weren't for the rain, the series could have ended in a 3-0 rout.&nbsp;

"The weather gods saved India from what could have been a total rout in the three-match ODI series in New Zealand," wrote Gavaskar.&nbsp;

"What the series showed is that when it comes to pitches where there is movement or extra bounce, the Indian batters continue to be challenged, just like earlier generations," he added.&nbsp;

India toured New Zealand shortly after the disappointment at the T20 World Cup where the team crashed out of the semifinal. India won the T20I series 1-0 but could never really manage to compete in the 50-over format.

In the same column, Gavaskar also shot a warning message for the Indian team to not take Bangladesh lightly, especially in their backyard.

"Now for the tour of Bangladesh all the big guns in batting are back as also in the bowling and India will be a formidable team once again.That said the Bangladeshis are an extremely tough team to beat in their home environs and India will have to be at their best to win."
