What makes the javelin so special is the fact that it was one among multiple javelins that were used by Chopra over the course of his Tokyo Olympics campaign. In addition to the javelin, the BCCI also won possession of an angavastra that had been signed by the entire Paralympic contingent. For the latter, the BCCI parted ways with a shocking Rs. 1 crore. From Virat Kohli to Mirabai Chanu: Sporting icons wish countrymen on India's Independence Day

Independence Day 2022: India's greatest sporting milestones which inspired billions

Pakistan javelin star Arshad Nadeem's coach Syed Hussain Bukhari has showered his love on Indian superstar Neeraj Chopra. Bukhari said Neeraj is like Pakistan's son and he wishes to see India's golden boy compete with Nadeem at a packed stadium in Pakistan in the future. Nadeem won the elusive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday after a stunning performance in the men's javelin throw final.

Nadeem set a new Commonwealth Games record with a brilliant throw of 90.18m in the final as he beat the likes of reigning world champion Anderson Peters and others to finish on top of the podium. The Pakistan star also became the first-ever South Asian to breach the 90m mark in javelin throw beating his arch-rival Chopra to the feat.

Nadeem and Chopra share a great rivalry on the field but they remain good friends off it and share a great bond between them. Their friendship has been spoken about a lot ever since Chopra and Nadeem won the gold and silver medals respectively at the Asian Games 2018. While Nadeem surpassed the 90m barrier during the Commonwealth Games 2022 on Sunday, Chopra was not in action in the competition.

The Indian superstar had to pull out of the Commonwealth Games last month owing to an injury that he picked up during the World Athletics Championships final. Chopra had won the silver medal at the World Athletics Championships and would have entered the Commonwealth Games 2022 as the defending champion.

Speaking fondly about Chopra, Nadeem's coach Bukhari said Pakistan would shower the Indian javelin star with the same love as they did to the legendary Milkha Singh when he had defeated Abdul Khaliq in Lahore in 1960, if he wins in Pakistan.

“Most of the time, Arshad trains at the Jinnah Stadium in Islamabad and Lahore too, my wish is to see Arshad and Neeraj compete at a packed stadium in Lahore or Islamabad. Neeraj is also like our son. I as a Pakistani promise you that if Neeraj wins, we will shower him the same love we showered on Milkha Singh Ji when he won against Abdul Khaliq in Lahore in 1960. Athletes share a common bond of love for the sports," Bukhari was quoted as saying by The Indian Express.

Bukhari believes Nadeem's success can do the same for Pakistan as Neeraj's gold medal at the Tokyo Olympics last year did for India. The javelin coach said he has recently witnessed a rise in youth taking up javelin throw and believes more will be inspired to play the game due to what Nadeem has achieved so far in his career.

“After Arshad’s Asian Games bronze and Tokyo Olympics qualification topping, I can say I get to see 30-40 javelin throwers in almost each training ground in Lahore. In recent months, I have seen youth coming from Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and from near the Pakistan-China border areas come to enquire about trials at Lahore. What Neeraj did for India, Arshad’s Olympic participation and today’s record can do the same in Pakistan,” said Bukhari.

Tokyo Olympics to World Championships: A look at Neeraj Chopra's memorable medal triumphs

On Tuesday (July 26), India dealt with a huge blow ahead of the 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, from July 29. Neeraj Chopra, being touted as one of the strongest medal contenders for CWG 2022, got ruled out of the showpiece event due to a groin injury.

The 24-year-old Neeraj, the poster boy of Indian sports, suffered a groin injury during the men's javelin throw final in the World Athletics Championships, where he attained a silver medal win on Sunday (July 25).

Athletics Federation of India President Adille Sumariwalla said in AFI's release, "Neeraj has said that since he is not 100 per cent fit to compete at the Commonwealth Games, he would not be the flag bearer of the Indian contingent at the athletes’ parade in the opening ceremony,” Mr. Sumariwalla said. “Neeraj appeared to be struggling on Sunday during the finals at the World Championships. We are in constant touch with him to assist his recovery," he added.

With this interruption, Neeraj's golden run since Tokyo 2020 comes to a halt. The young superstar can be credited for making his countrymen fall in love with a new sport in javelin courtesy of his Tokyo Olympic blitz. Let's be honest, not many of us actually knew the basics of javelin before he recorded an 87.58m throw in Tokyo 2020 to return with a gold medal. While accolades, and praises followed suit from the highest dignitaries to a common man for Neeraj, the youngster remained focused and kept going ahead. As a result, his 2022 season was no less than a dream before the injury made its presence felt.

Neeraj ended the Paavo Nurmi Games, in Finland, achieving a new high. He set up a new national record and returned with a silver medal with a throw of 89.30 metres. In the Stockholm Diamond League, the javelin thrower once again garnered eyeballs by shattering the national record via a throw of 89.94 metres.

Next came the World Athletics Meet. By now, every Indian had googled the live telecast and streaming details for the qualifying as well as final round of the men's javelin throw event. Neeraj's success can be evident from the fact that he did the unthinkable by making a plethora of Indian sports fanatics wake up early on a Sunday morning -- for a non-cricket match -- to watch the final event. He didn't let their efforts go in vain as he returned with a silver medal with a historic throw of 88.13m in Eugene, Oregon.

Thus, javelin thrower Neeraj has made it a habit for his ardent Indian followers to know more about the sport while he continues to make giant strides by virtue of his consistency. Just when he was gearing up for CWG 2022, misfortune caught up with him. While many must have felt Neeraj is riding on the devil's own luck, his recent success is only a byproduct of his appetite for more glory and sheer hard work. Nonetheless, it seems bad luck decided to appear right before CWG'22.

Given Neeraj's fine form and hunger for consistency, only a stroke of rotten luck could've derailed his progress. While he needs nearly a month to recover, the Indian fans are disheartened and will spend the remaining week in disdain. However, the young star has just started his long journey at the highest level. Misfortunes and disappointments will join him but his zeal and temperament won't die down in years to come.

As the saying goes A wounded lion is more dangerous than a hungry one, expect Neeraj to bounce back in style and keep the Indian tricolour flying high as ever post his return. Surely, his comeback will be greater than the setback.

Silver for Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra in Eugene, ends India's 19-year wait

Neeraj Chopra is a phenomenon and there is no stopping the Tokyo Olympics champion as he continues to bring laurels to the country with his stunning performances. Neeraj scripted history at the World Athletics Championships 2022 in Eugene, Oregon, on Sunday (July 23) as he clinched the first-ever silver medal for the country at the showpiece event. Neeraj finished second on the podium in the men’s javelin final to carry on his stellar run this season.

After a sluggish start, Neeraj came up with a throw of 88.13m in his 4th attempt in the final to move to the second spot on the table and ensure a silver medal for himself at the World Championships. He became the first Indian to win a medal each at the Olympics and the World Athletics Championships.

Neeraj’s memorable silver medal triumph also brought an end to India’s 19-year-long wait for a second medal at the World Athletics Championships as he joined the great Anju Bobby George in an elite list as the only other Indian to have won a medal at the World Athletics Championships. George had won a bronze medal in long jump at the 2003 World Athletics Championships.

Neeraj didn’t have an ideal start to the proceedings in the final as his first attempt was less than 80m and he overstepped for a foul. He steadily went on improving over the next three throws and reached the 88.13m-mark in his fourth attempt which saw him climb to the 2nd spot on the table.

His second attempt was recorded at 82.39m while his third attempt was slightly above the 86m-mark which put him in close distance to a bronze medal spot. After his third attempt, Neeraj was under tremendous pressure as he was nowhere close to a medal spot but he kept his composure and came up with a stunning 88.13m effort to seal a silver medal in his 4th attempt.

Speaking about his poor start in the final, Neeraj said it’s all about remaining focused till the end when it comes to big competitions and revealed he always had the belief that he can produce one god throw from his six attempts which will put him in the reckoning for a medal.

“You should remain focused on the competition till the very end. In athletics, you get six chances and you never know when you can come up with your best throw so you should keep going.
Neeraj also expressed happiness that he has now successfully managed to prove some of his critics wrong, who believed the Indian star can throw the javelin longest in his first few attempts and that his performances go down towards the end. The Olympic gold medallist believes it is all about being mentally strong to bounce back from a difficult situation in big competitions.

“My performance also answered the questions that are often raised back in India that my best throws come out in the first couple of attempts. Now, I have shown that I can handle a situation like today’s where the competition was tough and I was not in the medal race after my first three attempts. You need to be mentally strong to make a comeback in a situation like this in a big competition,” Neeraj explained.

Despite creating history with his silver medal win, Neeraj was far from satisfied after his final two attempts and was seen agonisingly throwing his hand on the track after an average throw in his last attempt. Also Read: You make us proud: PM Modi, Abhinav Bindra & others laud Neeraj Chopra after he wins historic silver for India Despite creating history with his silver medal win, Neeraj was far from satisfied after his final two attempts and was seen agonisingly throwing his hand on the track after an average throw in his last attempt. Chopra revealed there was stiffness in his groin which didn’t help his cause as he felt he couldn’t give his 100 per cent in the final two attempts to push for the elusive gold medal in the final. “We always want to give our 100 percent on the field but it doesn’t happen every time. After my 4th throw, I felt a little tightness in my groin and that 100 percent effort that was required to push for gold somehow couldn’t come through. So it was a bit of disappointment but there was no such pressure that I have to win gold here being an Olympic champion,” said Neeraj, who lost the gold to reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada. ×
