Greatest Indian athlete of all time: Anju Bobby George hails Neeraj Chopra after World Athletics silver

Neeraj Chopra remains India’s flag bearer in the sport of Athletics. Chopra ended India’s 19-year wait for a medal at the World Athletics Championships by winning Silver in the Men’s Javelin. The reigning Olympic champion spoke to Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo on his performance and opened up on how he was forced to dig deep and come from behind following a poor start.

Chopra ends India’s 19-year wait for a World Championship medal

India's javelin star Neeraj Chopra scripted history as he bagged his maiden silver medal in the men's javelin throw final at the World Athletics Championships 2022 on Sunday (July 24). Continuing his stellar run this season, Neeraj came up with a throw of 88.13m in his fourth attempt in the final to finish second behind reigning world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada.

Neeraj had a sluggish start in the final as his first attempt was less than 80m and he overstepped for a foul. On the other hand, word champion Peters maintained a cushion right from the start at the top spot as he came up with a stunning throw of 90.21m in his very first attempt in the final.

Neeraj steadily moved up with a throw of 82.39m in his next attempt but it was not good enough to push the Indian into the top five. Just when it felt like it wasn't Neeraj's day and pressure was getting to his nerves, the Indian star improved further to 86.37m in his third attempt to move closer to the bronze medal position.

India's golden boy Neeraj Chopra continued his stellar run at the Kuortane Games in Finland on Saturday (June 18) as he clinched his first gold medal of 2022. After winning a silver medal at the Paavo Nurmi Games earlier this week, Chopra finished on top of the podium at the Kuortane Games with his best throw of 86.69m. The Tokyo Olympics gold medallist was up against world champion Anderson Peters of Grenada among others and came out on top.

Neeraj Chopra wins gold medal in Kuortane Games, his first since Tokyo Olympics

Neeraj Chopra recently impressed one and all in his first competitive event ten months after his historic gold-medal throw in the Tokyo Olympics last year.
Over the years, the sporting fraternity has been blessed with several marquee athletes from across the globe. Many sports have seen certain performers own the game they play. BCCI felicitates Tokyo Olympians, including gold medallist Neeraj Chopra, ahead of CSK vs KKR opening clash

Neeraj Chopra created history last year at the Tokyo Olympics, becoming just the second Indian and first from the sport of Athletics to be crowned Olympic Champion. That performance saw Chopra win Sportsman of the Year Male (track & Field) as well as Sportstar of the Year at the Sportstar Aces Award in Mumbai. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with Chopra to find out his preparations for the new season which include the World Championships as well as the Asiad and the Commonwealth Games.

WION Exclusive with India's Olympic Champion Neeraj Chopra

Neeraj Chopra scripted history on August 07 last year when he clinched India's first-ever gold medal in athletics, bringing an end to a long and agonising wait. Chopra finished on top of the podium in the final of men's javelin throw with a stunning effort of 87.58 metres to become India's only second individual Olympic gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra.

Bindra had won India's first individual gold medal at the Olympics in shooting back in 2008. He shot 10.8 in his last shot in the men’s 10m air rifle shooting event at the Beijing 2008 Olympics to etch his name in history. Bindra had started his Olympic journey in the year 2000 when he first took part in the Sydney Games and eventually managed to realise his golden dream eight years later in Beijing.

During an interaction with WION, India's only two individual Olympic gold medallists came together to talk about the paradigm shift in Indian sports that has happened over the years. Bindra, who finished on top of the podium at the Olympics in his third attempt, lauded Chopra who achieved the elusive feat in his debut Olympic campaign.

Chopra finished on top of the podium in the final of men's javelin throw with a stunning effort of 87.58 metres to become India's only second individual Olympic gold medallist after Abhinav Bindra. Exclusive! Neeraj Chopra represents new India, hope his gold starts a new era in Indian sport: Abhinav Bindra

Indian sport has seen many highs over the last two decades but just two men have been able to achieve the holy grail of sport, an Olympic Gold Medal. Abhinav Bindra shattered the cynicism around India's Olympic hopefuls by bagging the 10m Air Rifle Gold at the 2008 Games in Beijing. Neeraj Chopra joined India's most exclusive club by hurling the Javelin to a distance of 88.58m at the Tokyo Olympics. WION Sports Editor Digvijay Singh Deo caught up with both champions on the sidelines of the Sportstar Aces Awards in Mumbai where Chopra won in the Sportstar of the year (Male) category

Joint interaction with India's only two individual Olympic Champions Abhinav Bindra & Neeraj Chopra

India had to wait for long before veteran shooter Abhinav Bindra became the first individual from the country to win gold in the 10m Air Rifle in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Bindra made heads turn worldwide and soon became the darling of the nation.

However, the wait for India's second gold in the individual event continued from thereon. Neeraj Chopra finally ended the drought with his sensational performance in his maiden Olympic appearance during last year's Tokyo 2020 as the 23-year-old javelin thrower returned with an elusive gold in the men's javelin final in Tokyo, Japan. With a record throw of 87.58m, in his second attempt at Tokyo Games, Neeraj became the poster boy of Indian sports and his popularity continues to grow with each passing day.

He told the countrymen in his speech, "My heartiest greetings to all of you, in India and abroad, on the eve of the 73rd Republic Day! It is an occasion to celebrate what is common to us all, our Indian-ness. It was on this day in 1950 that this sacred essence of us all assumed a formal shape.
