'Zoom in more it spells GOD': NASA spots peculiar cloud hovering over Caspian Sea

Voyager spacecrafts have travelled further into space than any made-made space vehicle has ever gone. Voyager 1 and Voyager 2, launched in 1977, were meant to last just five years. But decades on, the spacecrafts have continued on their path sending back invaluable data never before obtained.

The spacecrafts are humankind's imprint on the space. The spacecrafts are so far away from Earth it takes 20 light hours and 33 minutes for a signal to travel from Voyager-1 to Earth. In case of Voyager 2, a signal takes 18 light hours to reach Earth. These spacecrafts are 23.3 billion kilometres from Earth.

These spacecrafts carrying out such a long journey is in itself a wonder and a thing to be proud of as a human. But the arduous and still continuing journey has begun to take its toll it seems. NASA has been gradually turning off equipments aboard both the spacecrafts.

Both of these probes are equipped with television cameras, infrared and ultraviolet sensors, magnetometers, plasma detectors, and cosmic-ray and charged-particle sensors. But 44 years on, the need to conserve energy in order to transmit data has assumed great priority.

NASA has hence been gradually switching of instruments one by one. It has been decades since NASA shut down cameras on the probes. And though it feels sad it appears that NASA would continue shutting down more instruments.

Though it is not certain, will there be a time when we would cut all contact with both spacecrafts? The Voyagers will continue their journey into nothingness of space even after that. They will bear testimony of human ingenuity as they would chart lonely path in the deep expanse.

NASA to gradually shut Voyager probes as they drift away

NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has spotted a buzzing multiplanet system within our galactic neighbourhood about 33 light-years from Earth, making it one of the closest known multiplanet systems to our own.

At the heart of the system lies a small and cool M-dwarf star, named HD 260655, and astronomers have found that it hosts at least two terrestrial, Earth-sized planets.

However, the planets are likely not habitable, as their orbits are relatively tight, exposing the planets to temperatures that are too high to sustain liquid surface water, the astronomers from MIT who made the discovery said.

The inner plant orbits its star every 2.8 Earth days and is about 1.2 times the size of Earth and twice as massive. The other orbits every 5.7 Earth days and is 1.5 times the size of Earth and three times as massive. They have both been described considered "rocky."

Nevertheless, the latest discovery has caused excitement among the scientific community as it will help them understand what this neighbourhood looks like.

It will also give them a closer look at the properties of the planets and signs of any atmosphere they might hold.

NASA's Mars Rover spots 'human trash' on Mars

NASA's rover, Perseverance, has been on a stroll for a long time on Mars. It has come across some odd but interesting terrain. Some examples are a weird snake-head rock and a balancing boulder. A picture of the feature on Mars was taken on Sunday (June 12) by the car-sized Perseverance. In the picture, a boulder can be seen balancing on a slab of gray rock. And on the right, a rock formation which looks like a snake which has its mouth open.

In the recent years, the sightings of UFOs have increased around the world. Several people have been looking for answers. Finally, there is some hope to unravel the mysteries as NASA has formed a team to study the UFOs. It seems to be a new push towards high-risk and high-impact science. On Thursday, NASA said that it is coming up with an independent team to explain the sightings. The team will also find out how much information is available publicly and how much more is required in this endeavour, the space agency announced. These professionals will also see how to use the information in the future.

At NASA headquarters in Washington, DC, Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator, Science Mission Directorate, said, "NASA believes that the tools of scientific discovery are powerful and apply here also."

During the National Academy of Sciences webcast, Zurbuchen added, "We are not shying away from reputational risk. Our strong belief is that the biggest challenge of these phenomena is that it's a data-poor field."

NASA head Bill Nelson said that he believes on accounts of UFOs. “We're taking this very seriously. I've talked to the Navy pilots that know that they saw something back in 2004. They tracked it on their radar off the Southern California coast, over the Pacific. Since then, hundreds of objects have been spotted and a couple of them were explained, they may be balloons, but most of them are unexplained. So I’ve asked NASA, and it will be announced within a few days, to approach this subject from a scientific standpoint, since we are a scientific research organisation. In about eight months, they’re going to report,” Nelson told a news briefing.

NASA’s rover, Curiosity, has clicked a picture of some bizarre but amazing rock pillars on Mars. These twisted rock formations on the Red Planet were found by the long-running rover on May 15. This rover is also about to complete its first decade of work on the planet on August 6. It has been regularly sending raw images to Earth. The image of the sinewy rocks was taken on Sol (Martian day) 3474 of the mission. On Twitter, SETI Institute, a research organisation, which explores origin of life in the universe, said, "The spikes are most likely the cemented fillings of ancient fractures in a sedimentary rock."

On Twitter, SETI Institute, a research organisation, which explores origin of life in the universe, said, "The spikes are most likely the cemented fillings of ancient fractures in a sedimentary rock." #PPOD: Here is another cool rock at Gale crater on Mars! The spikes are most likely the cemented fillings of ancient fractures in a sedimentary rock. The rest of the rock was made of softer material and was eroded away. 📷: @NASA @NASAJPL @Caltech #MSSS fredk, acquired on May 17. pic.twitter.com/RGfjmRBfI7 — The SETI Institute (@SETIInstitute) May 26, 2022 × Also Read: Aliens may be using free-floating rogue planets as spacecrafts in universe, says study The sedimentary rock is generally formed by the layers of sand and water, but the rest of the rock feature "was made of softer material and was eroded away," the institute added. These features, whose size has not been specified, may have also formed due to lighter gravity of the planet. Watch: What are solar flares? × Curiosity rover was working in an area called Mount Sharp (Aeolis Mons), which has been nicknamed Mirador Butte, on sols 3473 and 3475, as per a statement posted to the official blog of the mission at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory on May 13. The picture has been taken by Mast Camera or Mastcam of the rover. Watch WION's live TV here: (With inputs from agencies) You can now write for wionews.com and be a part of the community. NASA team in India to discuss on joint mission 'NISAR' with ISRO; launch likely by Q1 2023

NASA has reportedly confirmed that it will get involved in searching UFOs days after the historic Congress hearing raised concerns over the potential “threats” by these flying saucers.

According to DailyMail.com, which has cited sources, NASA will be helping the US UFO investigation.

A NASA spokesperson said it is “evaluating how to provide our expertise in space-based Earth observations to improve understanding of Unidentified Aerial Phenomena (UAPs)” and “has consulted with multiple government entities”.

However, it has denied it was setting up its own dedicated UAP office.

NASA’s decision comes weeks after the historic Congress hearing on UAPs in 54 years where the spotting of the flying saucers was officially acknowledged.

During the hearing, they also came up with a new law mandating a government UAP task force, which will be aided by NASA.

According to DailyMail.com, a source affiliated with the US government and knows of NASA’s UAP research said that the US space agency could gather evidence from astronauts.

“I suspect it will be a combination of efforts that will include perhaps firsthand eyewitness testimony of NASA employees and astronauts, and then perhaps a review of old archival footage to assess if there are some findings within the NASA archives that can help AOIMSG.”

NASA has reportedly confirmed that it will get involved in searching UFOs days after the historic Congress hearing raised concerns over the potential “threats” by these flying saucers.

“I suspect it will be a combination of efforts that will include perhaps firsthand eyewitness testimony of NASA employees and astronauts, and then perhaps a review of old archival footage to assess if there are some findings within the NASA archives that can help AOIMSG.” Also read | UFOs and aliens: US military shares videos at US Congress hearing. NASA confirms it will join US govt’s team to search for UFOs: Report

Boeing Starliner returns to Earth, concluding uncrewed test flight mission

NASA's Earth Observatory has captured satellite images of an undersea volcano eruption which shows plumes of superheated, acidic water slowly permeating in the southern Pacific. The image was taken on May 14 by the Operational Land Imager 2 on the Landsat 9 satellite. It showed an underwater eruption of the Kavachi Volcano of the Solomon Islands, which is one of the most active submarine volcanoes in the Pacific Ocean. It is known for its shark inhabitants and has been dubbed “Sharkcano” after a 2015 search expedition exploring the volcano discovered marine life in the active crater. It found two species of sharks: silky sharks and hammerheads.

The researchers also found that these sharks have evolved/mutated over time to thrive underwater on sulfur. The presence of the sharks in the crater raised “new questions about the ecology of active submarine volcanoes and the extreme environments in which large marine animals can exist,” the researchers wrote in a 2016 Oceanography article, “Exploring the ‘Sharkcano’.”

The images were shared on Twitter, showing a plume of discoloured water being emitted from the Kavachi Volcano.

In the hope of grabbing the attention of aliens, scientists are planning to send illustrations of human body parts to space.

According to Soch Fact Check, NASA is not working on a broadcast to launch images of naked humans into space. There have been misleading reports earlier which suggested that the experiment is being conducted at the behest of the US space agency.

Moreover, this experiment is not being funded by NASA. It appears to have stemmed from a study recently published in arXiv — an online database of non-peer-reviewed publications — about a hypothetical means to send a message to potential alien lifeforms somewhere in the Milky Way galaxy.

The proposal, "A Beacon in the Galaxy" (BITG), was presented by 11 researchers from a range of institutions, including NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

The scientists believe that a proper contact can be established with another life form, which has been tried and failed for 150 years, by sending a pixelated illustration of a naked woman and man waving “hello”, in an attempt to look inviting.

Apart from the pixelated illustrations, the scientists have also included a portrayal of gravity and DNA.

The scientists believe a binary-coded message is most likely to be understood by aliens.

“Though the concept of mathematics in human terms is potentially unrecognizable to extra-terrestrial intelligence, binary is likely universal across all intelligence,” the scientists said in their official project document.

Boeing's Starliner spaceship docks with International Space Station in key test mission

Forty-five years since its launch, NASA’s Voyager 1 spacecraft has been continuing its journey far beyond our solar system.

Launched in 1977, Voyager 1 exited our solar system in 12 years and entered interstellar space in 2012.

Despite its advanced age and 14.5-billion-mile distance (23.3 billion kilometres) from Earth, the probe continues to send back more scientific data as it pushes forward to uncover the vast unknowns of the galaxy.

However, new data sent by the Voyager 1 has perplexed the NASA engineers of the Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL).

On Wednesday, NASA said that while the probe is still operating properly, readouts from its attitude articulation and control system (AACS) didn’t match the spacecraft's movements and orientation, suggesting the craft is confused about its location in space.

The AACS is essential for Voyager as it ensures that the spacecraft’s high-gain antenna remains pointed at Earth so that can send data back to NASA.

"A mystery like this is sort of par for the course at this stage of the Voyager mission," Suzanne Dodd, a project manager for Voyager 1 and 2 at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, said in a statement. "The spacecraft are both almost 45 years old, which is far beyond what the mission planners anticipated," NASA said, adding that Voyager 1's twin, the Voyager 2 probe, is behaving normally. NASA’s Voyager 1 sending weird signals from beyond solar system, engineers perplexed

The study of the universe’s expansion rate has been a topic that has fascinated scientists and astronomers for a very long time. Since the initial studies conducted in the 1920s by astronomers Edwin P. Hubble and Georges Lemaitre to the discovery of ‘dark energy’ towards the end of the 1990s, the advancement in the field has been slow but steady. However, the Hubble Space Telescope has been providing a huge amount of data for the scientists to study and NASA believes that something strange is happening in the universe considering how fast it is expanding.

According to NASA, the data provided by the Hubble Space Telescope shows that the rate of expansion has become much quicker in comparison to the expected rate. But NASA was not able to provide a concrete reason behind the discrepancy and went on to call it “something weird”.

“You are getting the most precise measure of the expansion rate for the universe from the gold standard of telescopes and cosmic mile markers,” said Adam Riess of the Space Telescope Science Institute (STScI) and the Johns Hopkins University in Baltimore, Maryland, in a statement.

Riess is currently leading a team of scientists who have published a paper regarding the data collected from the Hubble Space Telescope and it was seen that other galaxies are moving away quite fast from ours – showing a clear increase in the rate at which the universe is expanding.

The Hubble telescope has been gathering data for the last 30 years and it shows that although it was predicted that the rate of expansion will be 67.5 kilometers per second per megaparsec with a margin of error of 0.5, the current rate of expansion is somewhere around 73.

NASA has identified 'something weird' happening to the universe

NASA's InSight lander is headed for a dusty demise. Spacecraft is losing power due to dust on its solar panels. However, NASA will keep using the spacecraft’s seismometer to register marsquakes until the power peters out, likely in July.

The first lunar eclipse of 2022 will occur on May 15 & 16, and will be a 'Blood Moon' total lunar eclipse. It will be visible in Africa, Europe and the US

NASA’s Hubble Space Telescope has captured some of the mesmerising pictures of outer space over the years. It had been in operation since the 1990s and since then, it has allowed astronomers to view galaxies of all shapes and sizes from nearly every angle.

One such stunning image captured by one of the greater observatories was shared by NASA—the ‘Sombrero Galaxy’, which is roughly around 40 million light-years away from earth.

Set against a backdrop of remote galaxies, the Sombrero, also known as ‘Little Sombrero’, ‘NGC 7814’ or ‘Caldwell 43’, features a bright central bulge, a thin disk full of dust, and a glowing halo of gas and stars.
