'Development of cooperation': NASA signs deal with Roscosmos to share space station flights

The James Webb telescope, the world's largest and most powerful space telescope, has captured images of magical cliffs, glittering landscape, dancing galaxies and dying stars. The telescope is looking at the beginning of time, and it has found light that have been travelling for over 13 billion years. Palki Sharma brings you a report.

Gravitas: Magical photos from James Webb Space Telescope

NASA stunned everyone by releasing images taken by James Webb Space Telescope which has swung into action after its successful deployment. The most advansed telescope constructed by humankind is ready to unravel mysteries of the Universe from farthest corner previously invisible to human eyes, or lenses.

But another discovery justifies the promise shown by the telescope. The telescope has discovered water on a distant planet. It is a gas giant and presence of water has been detected in its atmosphere.

"WASP-96 b is one of more than 5,000 confirmed exoplanets in the Milky Way. Located roughly 1,150 light-years away in the southern-sky constellation Phoenix, it represents a type of gas giant that has no direct analog in our solar system. With a mass less than half that of Jupiter and a diameter 1.2 times greater, WASP-96 b is much puffier than any planet orbiting our Sun. And with a temperature greater than 1000°F, it is significantly hotter. WASP-96 b orbits extremely close to its Sun-like star, just one-ninth of the distance between Mercury and the Sun, completing one circuit every 3½ Earth-days," says NASA.

While searching for life, scientists often search for presence of water. Even on Earth, life began in water.

When it comes to alien life, it is not necessary that the extra-terrestrials should be tentacles-wielding creatures popularised by movies and books. Detection of even a microscopic life is a huge step in our search for life beyond Earth. And where there is water, there is high likelihood of there being microscopic life.

So have we found aliens? Let's wait for James Webb Space telescope to scan the skies a bit more to be absolutely certain.

‘I went and had an ugly cry’: Female astrophysicist on seeing NASA’s Webb telescope pictures

The James Webb Space Telescope has provided the first indication of how it will alter how people perceive the cosmos. The image depicts SMACS 0723, where a huge collection of galaxy clusters serves as a magnifying glass for the things behind them. This phenomenon, known as gravitational lensing, produced Webb's first deep field image of extremely old and far-off, dim galaxies.

These far-off galaxies and star clusters include several that have never been observed before. This image depicts the galaxy cluster 4.6 billion years ago.

The image was captured by Webb's near-infrared camera and is made up of snapshots acquired over a period of 12.5 hours at various light wavelengths.

So, given below is a list of six astounding facts about the James Webb Telescope that are gradually altering how humans explore space.

1: The most advanced observatory ever launched

The most advanced observatory ever launched is the $10 billion James Webb Space Telescope. On December 25, 2021, the JWST was launched using the Ariane 5 ECA rocket. The observatory, on-orbit supplies, and launch vehicle adaptor made up about 6200 kg of total cargo.

2: Returning to the beginning

The purpose of Webb is to collect and analyse infrared light, which has longer wavelengths than what the human eye can see. As a result, it will be able to gather infrared radiation from the earliest galaxies. More than 13 billion light years away, the early galaxies may only appear as dim smudges with the Webb telescope's current power. However, those smudges will aid scientists in learning more about the origins of the universe as we know it.

3: The golden mirror

The most amazing feature of the largest telescope in the world is its golden mirror. The primary mirror has a diameter of about 6.5 metres (21.3 ft).The primary mirror is made of beryllium and weighs 705 kg. It is coated in gold. The mirror's focal length is 131.4 metres. There are 18 parts in the main mirror.

4: The James Webb Space Telescope's objectives are as follows:

Find the first galaxies or brilliant objects that emerged from the Big Bang.

Analyze the development of galaxies from their formation to the present.

Watch how stars grow from their earliest beginnings to the creation of planetary systems.

We measure the physical and chemical characteristics of planetary systems, such as our own solar system, and look into whether or not there is a chance for life there.

5: The JWST observatory is equipped with the following instruments:

Near Infrared Camera (NIRCam)

Near Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec)

Mid Infrared Instrument (MIRI)

Fine Guidance Sensors/Near Infrared Imager and Slitless Spectrograph (FGS/NIRISS)

6: Plenty more to see

But that's only the start. The range of scientific applications for Webb is astounding. To examine the atmospheres of planets circling stars outside of our solar system, for instance, Megan Mansfield, a NASA Sagan Postdoctoral Fellow at the University of Arizona, will use Webb.

She is especially interested in learning about their atmospheres, namely "what they're made of, what their temperature is." She will learn a lot about the planet from that, including whether or not it can support life.
NASA's James Webb telescope: Incredible facts you need to know

United States President Joe Biden unveiled a stunning image taken by NASA's James Webb Space Telescope. The powerful telescope has revealed the "deepest and sharpest infrared image of the early universe" ever taken, looking back more than 13 billion years.

The image is filled with thousands of galaxies and features the faintest objects ever observed. NASA chief Bill Nelson said that at least one of the faint, older specs of light appearing in the "background" of the photo - a composite of images of different wavelengths of light - dates back more than 13 billion years.

The stunning image showed the 4.6 billion-year-old galaxy cluster named SMACS 0723, whose combined mass acts as a "gravitational lens," distorting space to greatly magnify the light coming from more distant galaxies behind it.

The NASA chief further said that the thousands of galaxies were captured in a tiny patch of the sky roughly the size of a grain of sand held at arm's length by someone standing on Earth.

It's here–the deepest, sharpest infrared view of the universe to date: Webb's First Deep Field. Previewed by @POTUS on July 11, it shows galaxies once invisible to us. James Webb telescope's first image: A never-before-seen view of the universe

The Indian Space agency now has a new facility aimed at performing what in simple terms can be explained as a holistic 'Traffic Management in Space' and to ensure the sustainable use of space. Known as the 'ISRO System for Safe & Sustainable Operations Management' (IS4OM), the new facility based in Bengaluru will perform a host of functions - safeguarding India's space assets, protecting them from space debris, predicting the orbital movement of debris, predicting likely collisions and coordinating with global agencies for all of the above.

With every passing day, the number of satellites orbiting earth are increasing in number, this also naturally means an increase in space debris. Debris includes everything from the spent upper stages of rockets, and defunct satellites, to even smaller objects that emerge after debris collisions. Given that these objects orbit the earth at nearly 27,000km per hour, any collision with space assets can prove catastrophic and could cause a massive outage of space-based services. Hence, it becomes increasingly important to have a 'Space Traffic Management System'.

"This is not about (space)traffic management alone, it is about keeping orbits available to everyone, operating in space without causing problems to one another, and ensuring sustainable use" explained Chairman, ISRO Dr. S. Somanath.

Elaborating on the different functions of 'IS40M', Dr. Somanath told WION, "Firstly it is about using radars and optical observation to watch and tag objects in space, then we will have to consider the effect of earth's gravitational pull, impact of sun and moon etc. and predict the movement of the said object/debris. Based on this, we will have to look for possibilities of collisions. This entire process has to be carried out on a daily basis. In case an object poses a threat to our satellite, we must accordingly move our satellite out of harm's way and also inform foreign agencies(whose satellites are in the vicinity) about our collision avoidance maneuver."

However, the Indian space agency does not have all facilities required to track objects of 10cm size and for this it relies on data provided by foreign agencies.

A galactic gem: Hubble Space Telescope captures an unusual multi-armed galaxy merger

NASA is gearing up to unveil the first cosmic images from the most powerful telescope ever launched into space: the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST). The space agency announced on Friday that the telescope's initial cosmic photographs will offer previously unattainable perspectives of far-off galaxies, brilliant nebulae, and a massive gas planet. A big reveal of the early observations by the $10 billion observatory which replaced the Hubble telescope, will be done in just a few days on July 12. The US, European, and Canadian space agencies are preparing to reveal the telescope's fresh insights into the universe's beginnings.

On this day, NASA will reveal 'secret' images taken by the most powerful telescope ever launched into space

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has shared an amazing image of the Cygnus Loop nebula on its official Instagram account. According to a social media user, it looks like an "abstracted skull".

NASA says that the wispy blue swirls of the Cygnus Loop nebula are basically the result of a massive stellar explosion that occurred 5,000 to 8,000 years ago.

For the unversed, it is known that Cygnus Loop is a large supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across.

In the post, NASA says that Supernova remnants like this nebula play an important role in "stellar evolution, enriching space with heavy elements and spurring the formation of new stars by compressing stellar gas".

ALSO READ | Deep-sea mining noise pollution will stretch hundreds of miles: Study For the unversed, it is known that Cygnus Loop is a large supernova remnant (SNR) in the constellation Cygnus, an emission nebula measuring nearly 3° across. In the post, NASA says that Supernova remnants like this nebula play an important role in "stellar evolution, enriching space with heavy elements and spurring the formation of new stars by compressing stellar gas". 'Wispy blue swirls': NASA shares extraordinary image of Cygnus Loop nebula that looks like 'abstracted skull'

NASA has revealed details of how it is planning to bring samples from Mars to Earth. According to an update posted on the space agency's website, the compact, lightweight Mars Ascent Vehicle (MAV) will be used for launching rock, sediment, and air samples from the surface of Mars. The award for its construction has been awarded to Lockheed Martin Space, of Littleton, Colorado. This move takes the Mars Sample Return Program's goal of making the first robotic round trip to safely return samples to Earth one step closer to success. If successful, this mission would be the first to launch a rocket off of another planet.

NASA prepares for the first rocket launch from a foreign planet

China has rejected a warning from the chief of NASA that China might "take over" the moon as part of a military programme, calling it an irresponsible smear. Molly Gambhir tells you how the space race is heating up.

Search for alien life has been favourite pastime as well as matter of scientific interest for mankind. Earth is teeming with life. Most part of the blue planet is covered by water. While searching for life on other planets, we often search for signs of presence of water. Because wherever there is water, there's likely to be life.

Europa, the satellite of planet Jupiter and Enceladus, the satellite of Saturn are covered in ice. The very thick icy sheet goes several kilometres deep from the surface. Scientists think that there are enormous oceans of liquid water under this ice coating on these satellites. At least till now, we have only been able to make conjectures about strange sea creatures swimming in these uncharted oceans.

But now a concept design has proposed a novel solution to the problem of ice sheets several kilometres thick. Ethan Schaler, a robotics mechanical engineer at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory (JPL) has put forth a new idea. Schaler’s Sensing With Independent Micro-Swimmers (SWIM) concept was awarded $600,000 from NASA.

Schaler's concept involves sending dozens of mobile phone-sized swimming probe to Europa and releasing them in the water below the ice. But how can we penetrate kilometres of ice to reach the liquid ocean? By a cryobot.

This cryobot would have narrow ice-melting probes in which the swimming probes with be place. The narrow probe will melt ice and reach the ocean. And this will be the time to release swimming probes and gather data.

If the conept design gets developed into something concrete, then these probes may actually get sent to Europa. NASA is planning to make it happen by 2030.

Is it possible for China to declare Moon as its own territory? Beijing rejects NASA's claims

NASA captures breathtaking image of an eclipse from space

The scientists have constantly been trying to come up with new innovations which can help them to find traces of alien life and it seems like NASA has found a unique solution. The NASA researchers have come up with a plan to use swarms of robots to find alien life in the solar system. The Sensing with Independent Micro-Swimmers (SWIM) concept is extremely important for missions that can be too risky for even big machines and the size of the swarm makes it perfect for inhospitable situations. According to the initial designs, these small robots can be kept inside any probe, and they can be released both underwater and, in the atmosphere, depending on the needs of the mission.

NASA looking to come up with tiny swimming robots to search for alien life

Scientists have always been fascinated with studying the atmosphere and terrain of Mars, but a new NASA laboratory experiment shows that in order to find any traces of alien life, they may have to come up with a new strategy. According to the experiment, the Rovers will have to dig at least 6.6 feet or more under the surface of Mars to find any traces of life. That is the level where the Rovers can find traces of amino acid – a strong indicator that life existed on the red planet. However, over time, the study believes that any proof of life has been damaged by cosmic rays on Mars.

The study, which was published in the journal Astrobiology, stated that the proof of life on Mars is possibly getting damaged faster than previously estimated by the scientists.

"Our results suggest that amino acids are destroyed by cosmic rays in the Martian surface rocks and regolith at much faster rates than previously thought," Alexander Pavlov of NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center in Greenbelt, Maryland said according to a report on Interesting Engineering.

Ancient alien life is likely buried deep under Mars’ surface: NASA study

Aliens, if they are there somewhere in the outer space have not yet made a contact with us. It may also be that they have and we missed the message.

Just imagine an alien craft coming to Earth and then going back dejected because we were too busy doing other things than to notice them. But what if there are tell-tale signs of such a visit? Not on Earth but on the Moon?

A double-crater formed due to crash of a mystery spacecraft has piqued scientific interest. This crater has been found on the Moon. The eastern crater measures 59 feet (18 metres) across and a western crater measures 52.5 feet (16 metres) across.

Scientists expected a crater to be formed as they knew an unknown piece of space junk crashed into the Moon last year. But here's the thing, no other previous crash of any space junk has formed twin craters like this one.

NASA has said that the double crater was 'unexpected'.

"The double crater was unexpected and may indicate that the rocket body had large masses at each end. Typically a spent rocket has mass concentrated at the motor end; the rest of the rocket stage mainly consists of an empty fuel tank. Since the origin of the rocket body remains uncertain, the double nature of the crater may indicate its identity," NASA has said in its release.

So is there a possibility of a tentacle-y alien brooding on the Moon because his spacecraft crashed? Time will tell.

NASA's CAPSTONE to become first spacecraft to fly specific unique lunar orbit

NASA's first-ever launch from a commercial site outside of the United States blasted off from Australia's Outback late Sunday, in a "historic" moment for the country's space industry. In the first of three planned launches from the Arnhem Space Centre, the rocket, carrying technology likened to a "mini Hubble" telescope, lifted off -- blasted about 350 kilometres (218 miles) into the night sky.

Australia: Why is this rocket launch by NASA historical?

Now, NASA's launch from a commercial site outside of the United States blasted off from Australia's outback. The rocket launch is momentous as it is the first in Australia in more than 25 years.

Historic: NASA’s first-ever commercial launch outside United States

It's real fun to observe astronauts in space bouncing around in zero gravity. Though we theoretically know that space does not have gravity, actually seeing zero gravity in action is amusing nonetheless.

Like solids, liquids act strange in zero gravity. But it's a bit hard to imagine how that would come to be.

An astronaut has come to our rescue. Chris Hadfield, a Canadian astronaut who is aboard the International Space Station (ISS) has shown everyone what happens when you wring a wet cloth in zero gravity.

The astronaut first takes a washcloth, packed to the size of a hockey puck. He takes the cloth out and wets it in water.

This may sound simple but how he does that in zero gravity is a thing to behold. Once the washcloth is wet with water, Hadfield proceeds to wring it.

Now, if we do this on Earth, the water will come out of the wash cloth and drip to the ground. But in space, where there is no gravity, the water simply forms a tube around the cloth and continues to cling to it. Even the water that 'falls' on Hadfield's hands forms an enveloping film around it.

NASA has urged Boston-based RR Auction to stop selling the moon dust that was obtained during the 1969 Apollo mission and fed to cockroaches in an experiment to see if it contained any pathogens that presented a hazard to terrestrial life. NASA's rover Perseverance has photograped what looks like a precariously balanced rock on Mars. Will the new photographs reveal more secrets about the red planet? Palki Sharma tells you more.

Gravitas: Mysterious rocks to reveal secrets of Mars?

With just 29 seconds left on the clock for its rocket launch, NASA aborted a crucial test that would've been monumental in placing humans on the moon. Why did this happen? Let's find out.

This was the fourth consecutive aborted attempt in the 'mega moon rocket' mission which is officially called the "Space Launch System (SLS)."

However, in spite of the failed attempt, NASA has called the attempt a success as engineers for the first time completed more of their launch objectives beforehand, successfully fuelling the deep-space rocket for the first time. This is one of the last tests the rocket must pass to be cleared for its first flight to the moon.
