'Transformative moment': James Webb takes direct image of planet outside our solar system

Voyager probes are human-made spacecrafts that have gone farthest from the Earth. The spacecrafts have left the Solar System and are still moving ahead into interstellar space. It is quite a thing of wonder that the spacecrafts have been able to maintain contact with the Earth. They are still sending invaulable information.

It was therefore an alarming situation when Attitude Articulation and Control System (AACS) of Voyager-1 started sending garbled data. The AACS keeps the probe's antenna pointed at Earth.

NASA engineers have analysed the probe's data for months and now have been able to fix the problem.

"The team has since located the source of the garbled information: The AACS had started sending the telemetry data through an onboard computer known to have stopped working years ago, and the computer corrupted the information," Nasa has said in an update.

Voyager-1 is so far away from the Earth that a signal from the probe takes 21 hours 45 minutes 45 seconds to reach Earth. And even with best of equipments here on Earth, a signal takes same amount of time to reach Voyager.

It's good news anyway that humanity's herald is back in good shape.

“We’re happy to have the telemetry back. We’ll do a full memory readout of the AACS and look at everything it’s been doing. That will help us try to diagnose the problem that caused the telemetry issue in the first place. So, we’re cautiously optimistic, but we still have more investigation to do,” Suzanne Dodd, Voyager’s project manager, said in a statement.

NASA's Artemis I mission to Moon: When and where to watch the historic launch

NASA’s new moon rocket will make its debut next week in a risky test flight before astronauts reach the lunar surface.

The 322-foot rocket will attempt to launch an empty crew capsule into lunar orbit, fifty years after NASA’s renowned Apollo moon shots.

However, the six-week plan is dangerous. The space agency still hopes to put two people on the lunar surface by the end of the year 2025, but if things go as per plan, astronauts could strap in as early as 2024 for a trip around the moon.

NASA administrator Bill Nelson said that if things go wrong for the Artemis programme, spiralling expenses and lengthy intervals between missions will make it difficult for the agency to make a comeback.

Compared to the Saturn V rockets that launched 24 Apollo astronauts to the moon 50 years ago, the new rocket is shorter and leaner, but with 4 million kilogrammes of thrust, it is more powerful.

The new rocket, in contrast to the Saturn V’s sleek design, includes two strap-on boosters.

The rocket’s core stage will continue to fire before detaching and fragmenting when it crashes into the Pacific. A higher stage will launch the Orion spacecraft towards the moon in the two hours following lift-off.

The boosters won’t be recovered from the Atlantic for reuse; instead, they will peel away after two minutes, much as the shuttle boosters did. The core stage will continue to fire before detaching and fragmenting when it crashes into the Pacific.

A higher stage will launch the Orion spacecraft towards the moon two hours following lift-off.

The 386,000 km journey to the moon will take about a week. The capsule will enter a distant orbit with a far point of 61,000 kilometres, whizzing narrowly around the moon, reported AP.

The only drawback is that before travelling to the moon, the starship will need to refuel at a fuel station in Earth's orbit.

By 2024, a second test flight will transport four humans around the moon and back.

NASA plans to launch four more around a year later, with two of them landing at the lunar south pole. Like NASA’s Apollo spacecraft, Orion lacks a built-in lunar lander, so the space agency worked with SpaceX to supply its Starship spaceship for the first Artemis moon landing.

Musk plans to launch a starship around Earth on SpaceX’s Super Heavy Booster.

NASA postpones Artemis-1 launch due to technical reasons

NASA’s Artemis missions from Moon to Mars explained

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) is on track for the launch of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket for its inaugural flight test on Monday. Ahead of the liftoff, Jeff Spaulding, NASA test director stated, “So far, everything looks really good,”

The launch is expected to take place in a two-hour window on August 29 i.e Monday. NASA's most powerful rocket is scheduled to lift off at 8:33 AM EDT.

Should the countdown take longer than the two-hour window targeted for liftoff, NASA has set September 2 and September 5 as alternative launch dates.

What is the mission?

The SLS and the Orion crew capsule will go around Moon on a six-week test voyage called Artemis 1. It will be a test rehearsal for the manned mission that NASA is planning for in the year 2024.

Before it is certified suitable to carry passengers, the journey aims to put the SLS vehicle—which is thought to be the most complicated and potent rocketship in the world—through a rigorous stress test of its systems during an actual flight.

"This new deep space exploration system is going to take us back to the moon and to new scientific discoveries that we can't even imagine yet," said Randy Lycans, Vice President and General Manager of NASA's Enterprise Solutions.

The SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns.

It is pertinent to note that it is the first time since the famous Apollo 11 mission that humankind will be sending a rocket to the moon. The eventual goal is to set a permanent facility on Earth's satellite and prepare for a similar one on Mars, which is being dubbed the next frontier for the human race.

Witnessing aurora, the beautiful dance of colours in the sky is on almost everyone's travel list. The auroras are visible from regions close to Earth's north and south poles. The mesemerising spread and play of colours across the night sky is indeed something to behold.

But it is not possible for us to watch auroras from sky. For all such practical purposes, NASA comes to rescue.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has posted a pic of aurora. Aurora australis to be specific. Aurora australis is visible from places close to Earth's South Pole, particularly from Tasmania and New Zealand. NASA has posted image of aurora australis taken from International Space Station (ISS).

The space agency has posted the image on its Instagram account.

The image shows a splendid play of colours. The aurora is mainly green in colour, but assumes a pink-red hue at its reaches away from the Earth.

"The vibrant displays of light around Earth's North and South Poles are caused by the interaction of solar particles, ejected by the Sun, and our planet's protective magnetic field," NASA's Instagram post of the image describes.

During large solar storms, the post continues, "the Sun spews large bubbles of electrified gas which collide with our magnetic field at its North and South Poles and enter our atmosphere ... these energized solar particles collide with atmospheric gases resulting in beautiful displays of light."

The signs of carbon dioxide have been detected in the atmosphere of a planet outside our solar system for the first time by the James Webb Space Telescope.

The successful discovery of CO2 gives researchers hope that similar observations could be carried out on rocky objects more hospitable to life although the exoplanet would never be able to support life as we know it.

NASA astronauts performed a flyby of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket as it awaited the launch of Artemis 1 on August 29 in a stunning set of photos that they published on social media.

The pictures, which were recently taken above the 322-foot-tall (98-meter) SLS megarocket at Launch Complex 39B and the Vehicle Assembly Building at Kennedy Space Center in Florida, were posted on Twitter by astronauts Andrew Morgan, Reid Wiseman, and Christina Birch.

For more than 50 years, NASA has utilised Northrop T-38 Talon jets as training and pursuit aircraft. The twin-seat trainer can travel faster than most commercial aircraft—up to Mach 1.6 supersonic—and up to 40,000 feet in height.

"The T-38 is a great aircraft for what we need at NASA because it's fast, it's high-performance and it's very simple," retired NASA astronaut and former International Space Station Commander Terry Virts said in a NASA statement in 2011. "It's safe and it's known. So compared to other airplanes, it's definitely one of the best."

NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft departed Earth over 45 years ago on a mission to the outer planets and beyond. Even now, the adventure is still going on. On August 20, 1977, Voyager 2, the first of two spacecraft involved in the mission, was launched. It took use of a unique planetary alignment to use one planet's gravity to drive itself to another. Voyager 2 continued the Voyager mission's exploration of Uranus and Neptune whereas the original Voyager mission was limited to Jupiter and Saturn. On September 5 of the same year, Voyager 1 was launched into space.

The two spacecraft are equipped with cutting-edge tools for the in-depth study of distant worlds. Both of them are still sending data as they leave the solar system and enter interstellar space.

When mission designers at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory realised that the next alignment of the outer planets, a rare occurrence that only happens once every 175 years, would take place in the late 1970s, they began planning the Voyager mission. Technology at the time allowed for the utilisation of this alignment to send a spacecraft via Jupiter, utilise Saturn's gravity to visit Saturn and then repeat the process to send another spacecraft by Uranus, Neptune, and Pluto.

The first spacecraft to leave the earth, Voyager 2, was launched from Launch Complex 21 at the Cape Canaveral Space Force Station (formerly the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station) in Florida on a Titan IIIE-Centaur rocket. Despite the fact that Voyager 1 was launched two weeks later, it reached Jupiter four months earlier than Voyager 2 thanks to a quicker trajectory.

NASA engineers began preparing more than 45 years ago for the potential that an extraterrestrial civilization could discover the spacecraft. Similar to Voyager 1, Voyager 2 is equipped with a gold-plated record that holds data about Earth as well as recordings of sounds, music, and greetings in 55 different languages. The record's playback instructions were also added by the engineers.

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has reshared the sound of a black hole, which is quite spooky and haunting. The audio clip represents actual sound waves, which are coming out from a supermassive black hole located around 250 million light-years away.

The American space agency previously reported that the black hole at the centre of the Perseus galaxy cluster has been associated with sound since 2003.

The sound waves rippling out of the galaxy have been transposed up to 57 and 58 octaves in order to make them audible to human hearing.

In order to boost crop production research outside Earth and support exploration missions, Redwire Corporation said on Tuesday it would launch the first commercial space greenhouse in Spring next year.

According to Dave Reed, Redwire's manager for the greenhouse project, the space infrastructure company's project will help deliver critical insights for NASA's Artemis missions and beyond.

''Growing full crops in space will be critical to future space exploration missions as plants provide food, oxygen and water reclamation,'' he added.

Aiming at sending astronauts to the moon and establishing a long-term lunar colony, the Artemis programme of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) will act as a precursor to the eventual human exploration of Mars.

'Growing full crops in space': First commercial space greenhouse to be launched in 2023

The massive Space Launch System moon rocket from NASA, which is topped with an uncrewed astronaut capsule, started an hours-long crawl to its launchpad on Tuesday night in preparation for the behemoth's first test flight this month.

The 98-metre-tall rocket is set to launch its initial journey into orbit on August 29 without any human crew. It will be an important, long-awaited demonstration mission to the moon for NASA's Artemis programme, the country's multibillion-dollar endeavour to send people back to the moon as training for trips to Mars.

Around 10 p.m. EDT (0200 GMT) on Tuesday, the Space Launch System left its assembly building at NASA's Kennedy Space Center in Florida and started the six-kilometre (four-mile) journey to its launchpad. The Space Launch System has been developed over the previous ten years with the help of Boeing Co.

The rollout will take about 11 hours at less than 1 mph (1.6 kph).

The NASA Orion astronaut capsule, made by Lockheed Martin Corp., is perched atop the rocket. It is intended to split from the rocket in outer space, transport people to the moon, and then come together with another spacecraft to deliver astronauts to the lunar surface.

Without any humans inside, the Orion spacecraft will launch from the Space Launch System on August 29 for the Artemis 1 mission. It will orbit the moon for 42 days before returning to Earth for an ocean splashdown.

On September 2 and September 5, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration has backup launch dates in case terrible launch weather or a minor technical issue prevents a launch on August 29.

Red giant star Betelgeuse blows off its top; scientists dub it a 'never-before-seen' phenomenon

Suggesting Moscow is serious about abandoning the International Space Station (ISS), Roscosmos unveiled for the first time a physical model of what a planned new Russian-built space station will look like.

Rushing to reduce its dependency on Western nations, Russia is forging ahead on its own or cooperating with countries like China and Iran.

In a military-industrial exhibition outside Moscow, Roscosmos presented a model dubbed "ROSS" by Russian state media.

According to Roscosmos chief Yuri Borisov, the new space station would be launched in two phases. While the first phase would see a four-module space station start operating, the second phase would include two modules and a service platform.

Russia is working to develop its own orbital station and will quit the ISS after 2024, Borisov added.

Under the partnership led by the US and Russia, the ISS has been continuously occupied since November 2000.

Saying it has not yet received official confirmation of Russia's planned withdrawal, NASA said it understood that Moscow would continue to participate until 2028.

Highlighting that the new station would afford Russian cosmonauts a much wider view of the Earth, the Russian space agency said it would be more beneficial for monitoring purposes than they enjoy in their current segment.

Accusing Russia of prosecuting an unprovoked imperial-style war of aggression against Ukraine, the West hit the Russian economy with sanctions designed to starve Moscow of technology and funds.

In response, Russian President Vladimir Putin called his attack on Ukraine a "special military operation" to denazify its neighbour.

Roscosmos unveils model of new space station after announcing departure from International Space Station

Meteorologists have called the rare and intense flooding that hit California's Death Valley a ''once-in-1,000-year event''.

According to the National Park Service (NPS), the flood in the famously parched park had left thousands of people stranded and bogged down 60 cars under mounds of debris.

Experts at NASA’s Earth Observatory said that the storm poured an amount of water equal to roughly 75 per cent of the average annual total in just three hours.

With a 0.1 per cent likelihood during a given year, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service Las Vegas called Daniel Berc described the deluge as a historic “1,000-year event”.

Also read | Heatwave causes record temperatures in southwestern US

Death Valley is the largest national park in the 48 lower states with its vast sand dunes and endless badlands.

The desert basin is the driest place in North America and is described as “a land of extremes” as it is known for temperatures that have climbed higher than any other place on Earth.

Almost tying the previous daily record of 1.47 inches, a total of 1.46 inches (3.7 centimetres) of rain fell in the park's Furnace Creek area.

“With climate change models predicting more frequent and more intense storms, this is a place where you can see climate change in action,” park superintendent Mike Reynolds told news agency AFP.

Some regions will experience increasingly intense and frequent rainfall even if the world manages to limit warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius according to UN climate experts.
