<p>NASA stated that the pits were first discovered on the Moon in 2009. After that, scientists have been exploring whether or not those caves could be used as shelters.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA also noted that those pits or caves would also offer some protection from cosmic rays, solar radiation and micrometeorites.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Scientists&nbsp;used computer modelling to analyse the thermal properties of the rock and lunar dust and to understand the pit's temperatures over time, NASA said.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The findings showed that the temperatures within the permanently shadowed reaches of the pit fluctuate only slightly throughout the lunar day. It remains&nbsp;at around 63 F (or 17 C).&nbsp;</p>

<p>It means the&nbsp;a nearside pit crater in the Moon's Sea of Tranquility is with room temperatures. The room temperature is&nbsp;identified&nbsp;as around&nbsp; 68–72 F (20–22 C) or in some cases 68 F (20 C).&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>The cracks in the rocks on Bennu were spotted by the scientists in spacecraft images from the first surveys. Delbo said that the fractures seemed to point in the same direction, "a distinct signature that temperature shocks between the day and the night could be the cause."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The length and angles of more than 1,500 fractures were measured by Delbo and his colleagues in OSIRIS-REx images by hand. NASA said that some were shorter than a tennis racket, others longer than a tennis court.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The US National Park Service reported that five of the six boat ramps/launches are currently closed.&nbsp;On its website, it said that "Declining water levels due to climate change and 20 years of ongoing drought have reshaped the park’s shorelines."&nbsp;</p>

<p>It added that “As Lake Mead continues to recede, extending launch ramps becomes more difficult and more expensive due to the topography and projected decline in water levels.”</p>

<p>The summers of 1983 and 1999 marked the last time the lake was close to capacity.</p>

Newly released satellite images that were taken by NASA's Earth Observatory show the dramatic decline in the water levels. As of July 18th, Lake Mead stands at its lowest level of just 27 per cent of its full capacity. This is the result of a 22 years long downward trend. The reservoir's water levels are the lowest they've been since April 1937, a time when the reservoir which has a maximum storage capacity of 9.3 trillion gallons (36 trillion litres) was still being filled for the first time. <p>NASA is reportedly planning to have a variety of lunar vehicles on its roster. From hauling commercial payloads to carrying human astronauts to isolated regions of the moon on extended trips, NASA is looking for a wide pool of options.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Kirk Shireman, vice president of Lunar Exploration Campaigns at Lockheed Martin stated that,&nbsp;unlike previous rovers that only lasted a few days, the new and much improved jointly-developed rover is being built for extended use and other commercial setups as well.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“We’re developing this new generation of Lunar mobility vehicle to be available to NASA and for commercial companies and even other space agencies to support science and human exploration,” said Shireman.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It is pertinent to note that Goodyear has previously worked with NASA on the famous Apollo missions. The tyre company is expected to use a state-of-the-art airless tyre technology that can be used for rovers as well as passenger vehicles, here on Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Chris Helsel, senior vice president, global operations and chief technology officer at Goodyear was quoted as saying to the media, “Everything we learn from making tires for the moon’s extremely difficult operating environment will help us make better airless tires on Earth."</p>

NASA posts colourful pic of Pluto, wows netizens

<p>The American space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), recently released the first full-colour and high-resolution pictures taken from the James Webb Space Telescope. The stunning images were a testament to what humanity is capable of. NASA drew back the curtain on billions of years of cosmic evolution.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Now, the images are being analysed by experts and scientists. In the latest development, a scientist who analyzed the data from James Webb said on Wednesday (July 20) that the telescope may have found a galaxy that existed 13.5 billion years ago.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Rohan Naidu of the Harvard Center for Astrophysics told news agency AFP that the collection of stars – called GLASS-z13 is a galaxy that apparently dates back to 300 million years after the Big Bang.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It means about 100 million years earlier than anything previously identified. The previous oldest galaxy, known as GN-Z11, was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As quoted by AFP, Naidu said, "We're potentially looking at the most distant starlight that anyone has ever seen."&nbsp;</p>

<p>"We found two very compelling candidates for extremely distant galaxies. If these galaxies are at the distance we think they are, the universe is only a few hundred million years old at that point," he said while speaking to New Scientist.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Notably, the more distant objects are from us, the longer it takes for their light to reach us. So in order to look back into the distant universe is to see into the deep past.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Though GLASS-z13 existed in the earliest era of the universe, its exact age remains unknown as it could have formed anytime within the first 300 million years.&nbsp;</p>

<p>It s understood that the GLASS-z13 was spotted in data from the orbiting observatory's main infrared imager, called NIRcam. The discovery was, however, not revealed in the first image set published by NASA last week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>When translated from infrared into the visible spectrum, the galaxy appears as a blob of red with white in its centre.&nbsp;</p>

In the latest development, a scientist who analyzed the data from James Webb said on Wednesday (July 20) that the telescope may have found a galaxy that existed 13.5 billion years ago. Rohan Naidu of the Harvard Center for Astrophysics told news agency AFP that the collection of stars – called GLASS-z13 is a galaxy that apparently dates back to 300 million years after the Big Bang. The previous oldest galaxy, known as GN-Z11, was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope. As quoted by AFP, Naidu said, "We're potentially looking at the most distant starlight that anyone has ever seen." "We found two very compelling candidates for extremely distant galaxies. If these galaxies are at the distance we think they are, the universe is only a few hundred million years old at that point," he said while speaking to New Scientist. Notably, the more distant objects are from us, the longer it takes for their light to reach us. So in order to look back into the distant universe is to see into the deep past. When translated from infrared into the visible spectrum, the galaxy appears as a blob of red with white in its centre. <p>In order to allow Russian cosmonauts to fly on American spacecraft in exchange for US astronauts being able to ride on Russia's Soyuz, NASA and Russia's space agency Roscosmos have signed a long-sought agreement to integrate flights to the International Space Station.</p>

<p>Highlighting that it will facilitate the "exploration of outer space for peaceful purposes," Roscosmos said that "The agreement is in the interests of Russia and the United States and will promote the development of cooperation within the framework of the ISS programme."</p>

<p>As part of the agencies' long-standing civil alliance, NASA and Roscosmos have sought for years to renew routine integrated crewed flights.</p>

<p>"The station was designed to be interdependent and relies on contributions from each space agency to function. No one agency has the capability to function independent of the others," NASA said.</p>

<p>Yuri Borisov, a former deputy prime minister, and deputy defense minister has recently replaced the head of Roscosmos, Dmitry Rogozin.</p>

Detection of even a microscopic life is a huge step in our search for life beyond Earth. And where there is water, there is high likelihood of there being microscopic life.</p>

‘I went and had an ugly cry’: Female astrophysicist on seeing NASA’s Webb telescope pictures

<p>The James Webb Space Telescope has provided the first indication of how it will alter how people perceive the cosmos.The image depicts SMACS 0723, where a huge collection of galaxy clusters serves as a magnifying glass for the things behind them. This phenomenon, known as gravitational lensing, produced Webb's first deep field image of extremely old and far-off, dim galaxies.</p>

<p>These far-off galaxies and star clusters include several that have never been observed before. This image depicts the galaxy cluster 4.6 billion years ago.</p>

<p>The image was captured by Webb's near-infrared camera and is made up of snapshots acquired over a period of 12.5 hours at various light wavelengths.</p>

James Webb telescope's first image: A never-before-seen view of the universe

<p>The Indian Space agency now has a new facility aimed at performing what in simple terms can be explained as a holistic 'Traffic Management in Space' and to ensure the sustainable use of space. Known as the&nbsp;'ISRO System for Safe &amp; Sustainable Operations Management' (IS4OM), the new facility based in Bengaluru will perform a host of functions - safeguarding India's space assets, protecting them from space debris, predicting the orbital movement of debris, predicting likely collisions and coordinating with global agencies for all of the above.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With every passing day, the number of satellites orbiting earth are increasing in number, this also naturally means an increase in space debris. Debris includes everything from the spent upper stages of rockets, and defunct satellites, to even smaller objects that emerge after debris collisions. Given that these objects orbit the earth at nearly 27,000km per hour, any collision with space assets can prove catastrophic and could cause a massive outage of space-based services. Hence, it becomes increasingly important to have&nbsp;a 'Space Traffic Management System'.</p>

<p>"This is not about (space)traffic management alone, it is about keeping orbits available to everyone, operating in space without causing problems to one another, and ensuring sustainable use" explained Chairman, ISRO Dr. S. Somanath.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Elaborating on the different functions of 'IS40M', Dr. Somanath told WION, "Firstly it is about using radars and optical observation to watch and tag objects in space, then we will have to&nbsp;consider the effect of earth's gravitational pull, impact of sun and moon etc. and&nbsp;predict the movement of the said object/debris. Based on this, we will have to look for possibilities of collisions. This entire process has to be carried out on a daily basis. In case an object poses a threat to our satellite, we must accordingly move our satellite out of harm's way and also inform foreign agencies(whose satellites are in the vicinity) about our collision avoidance maneuver."</p>

These are complex calculations and are error-prone, owing to the large number of factors involved, thus necessitating various corrections.&nbsp;Dr. Somanath added that these mathematical models used to calculate and project the path of debris and their impact etc. are indigenously developed and even if a country wanted, such models are not available for purchase in the International market.</p>

<p>On India's capabilities, he explained that India has radars that are&nbsp;meant to observe satellites and the Indian space agency is also installing optical tracking facilities. However, the Indian space agency&nbsp;does not have all facilities required to track objects of 10cm size and for this it relies on data provided by foreign agencies.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Overall, we have to cover every aspect of safety and security of space assets and do so round-the-clock. Our scope of coverage from a single location will be limited. Multiple tracking stations across the globe are required to have entire coverage like America and Russia are having.&nbsp;For India's national security we will also have to observe and watch movements of foreign satellites over our country. As part of cooperation with foreign space agencies, we will exchange useful data, with the exceptions being the classified data and the precise ones which we need for our national security" Dr. Somanath concluded.&nbsp;</p>

A big reveal of the early observations by the $10 billion observatory which replaced the Hubble telescope, will be done in just a few days on July 12. The US, European, and Canadian space agencies are preparing to reveal the telescope's fresh insights into the universe's beginnings.</p>

<p>"When I first saw the images... of this deep field of this galaxy cluster lensing, I looked at the images, and I suddenly learned three things about the universe that I didn't know before," he said.</p>
