In the summer of 2022, unusually warm air temperatures have resulted in record melting throughout Svalbard. In the ice-covered archipelago of Norway, the plentiful meltwater, much of which went to the ocean, is the most recent manifestation of a rapidly changing climate. Svalbard is located halfway between the Norwegian mainland and the North Pole. Approximately 6% of the planet's surface is covered in glaciers outside of Greenland and Antarctica, covering more than half of its geographical area.

Before the record melting, the environment was altered by warming. Glaciers have been receding, and the "firn", a surface layer of compressed porous snow, has been losing its ability to hold large amounts of meltwater. This summer's melting was brought on by consistent warm breezes coming from the south. Parts of the archipelago had air temperatures that were on average up to 1.8°C (3.2°F) higher than normal from May 1 through July 25, 2022. On July 17, Svalbard experienced its highest-ever recorded melt volume due to a substantial warming trend that began on July 15.

Additional elements also played a part in the record-breaking event. The archipelago's sea ice began to disappear sooner than usual, and by the end of spring 2022, open ocean water was visible. (Sea ice can occasionally last until the end of the summer.) This made it possible for warm southerly winds to blow directly over land without first cooling off by blowing over sea ice. Additionally, the winter of 2021–2022 saw little snowfall. As the weather warmed, the thin covering of new snow quickly melted, revealing vast expanses of older, darker snow, firn, and bare ice. These darker surfaces absorb more solar radiation than bright, fresh snow does, which accelerates melting during the long, sunny days of the Arctic.

In the past, a large portion of the meltwater would have been kept in the firn layer, where it would eventually refreeze. The procedure can help maintain glacier ice by preventing meltwater from entering the ocean. Svalbard's snowpack held onto 34% of the summer's meltwater between 1981 and 2010. Only 8% of the workforce was retained this summer.

On July 11, 2022, NASA's James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) unveiled the sharpest ever and most precise image of the distant universe. The oldest galaxies that have never been observed have been captured in the photograph known as Webb’s First Deep Field. Fashion is now being used to highlight this revolutionary image.

Astrophysicists now have a better understanding of the appearance of some of the first stars and galaxies in the cosmos thanks to the spectacular unveiling of JWST’s first images of high scientific grade. The full-colour, infrared First Deep Field photograph, which captures a moment in the early cosmos and notably the SMACS 0723 galaxy cluster, has become a new favourite for many people all around the world. One company has turned the stunning artwork created by its erratic, glinting galaxies into a wonderful, galaxy garment.

Svaha, a fashion company, has unveiled a new JWST-themed collection that includes a dress, top, and cardigan. This project combines its two hobbies, science and fashion. Each of these goods' cotton materials is completely covered with a NASA photograph that captures a tiny speck of space in exquisite clarity. Customers of Svaha were reportedly very interested in the JWST outfit. The dress sells for $79.99.

When we say Mars, the first thing that crosses our minds is a red wasteland. Mars is almost always associated with the colour red. It's quite natural as the red colour of the planet is perceptible in the night sky even with naked eyes. If someone says Mars is blue, we are sure to dismiss the opinion almost instantly.

But now NASA, the space agency which has multiple rovers on the red planet and an orbitter around it has released some images in which clear blue streaks are visible on the planet's surface. The image has been captured by Mars Reconnaissance Orbitter (MRO) so it has captured an area on the martian surface that spans hundreds of metres. Each pixel in this image is equal to 25 feet on martian surface.

The blue streaks on the martian surface are a beautiful sight. The martian region visible in these images is called Gamboa Crater. It is located in the northern hemisphere of the planet.

So why is the red planet so blue?

The answer lies in the way this image was processed. This is what is called a 'false colour'. The blue region is actually as red as the planet is but has been coloured blue due to slight variations in the frequency of the reflected light. The region is NOT actually blue.

So is it just a way to make an image more beautiful and nothing else? No.

The regions streaked in blue colour indicate presence of geologic structures. When an analyst studies this image it will be helpful for him or her to quickly know where are these geologic structures located. This may help us to understand martian geology in greater detail.

NASA has decided to send two more helicopters to Mars following the success of their initial mission. The mission, which NASA is conducting along with the European Space Agency, is aimed at bringing back rocks from Mars to further the study into the red planet. The rocks, which were brought back in the initial mission, are currently being studied with help of state-of-the-art laboratory equipment. “We have a path forward using a revised and innovative architecture,” Thomas Zurbuchen, associate administrator for NASA’s science directorate, told the media.

The first images from NASA's James Webb Space Telescope mesmerised everyone with their beauty and from scientists to celebrities, no one could stop praising the achievement. With the help of its deep infrared cameras, it provided a glimpse at the beauty and vastness of the cosmos and even provided valuable data for scientists to study. However, there is one part which has stoked a controversy among the scientific society and that is the name of next-generation observatory.

James Webb, after whom the observatory was named, was a celebrated NASA administrator and he was well known for heading the Apollo program. Between 1961 and 1968, he worked on a number of significant NASA projects and many hails him for ushering the ‘golden age’ for the agency.

However, his career was not without its fair share of controversies. During his tenure as the top official in NASA, three Apollo I astronauts lost their lives during a 1967 ground test in Florida.

The depth of the damage the continuing drought is wreaking on America's greatest reservoir, Lake Mead can be seen in recent shocking photographs released by NASA. Newly released satellite images that were taken by NASA's Earth Observatory show the dramatic decline in the water levels. As of July 18th, Lake Mead stands at its lowest level of just 27 per cent of its full capacity. This is the result of a 22 years long downward trend. The reservoir's water levels are the lowest they've been since April 1937, a time when the reservoir which has a maximum storage capacity of 9.3 trillion gallons (36 trillion litres) was still being filled for the first time.

Pluto used to be the most distant planet in our Solar System. Used to be because its status as a planet has been revoked. But that doesn't mean Pluto ceases to amaze us. Image of the frozen landscape was, in not too distant past, just a smidge. But as NASA's New Horizons zoomed past Pluto in 2015, we have got more insight of the icy world. NASA has been sharing Pluto's pics all this while. These pics have been liked by thousands and have helped generate interest in Pluto.

NASA has shared another photo and this has bowled everyone over as usual. In this picture, Pluto is replete in resplendent colours and for a space body it does look rather unique.

NASA has shared the image on Instagram.

"Where does the rainbow end? Pluto isn't really a psychedelic riot of colors - this translated color image was created by New Horizons scientists to highlight the many subtle color differences between the planet's distinct regions," NASA said in the post.

"Pluto has a complex, varied surface with jumbled mountains reminiscent of Europa, networks of carved-out valleys, old, heavily cratered terrain sitting right next to new, smooth icy plains, and even what might be wind-blown dunes," it added.

NASA posts colourful pic of Pluto, wows netizens

The American space agency, the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA), recently released the first full-colour and high-resolution pictures taken from the James Webb Space Telescope. The stunning images were a testament to what humanity is capable of. NASA drew back the curtain on billions of years of cosmic evolution.

Now, the images are being analysed by experts and scientists. In the latest development, a scientist who analyzed the data from James Webb said on Wednesday (July 20) that the telescope may have found a galaxy that existed 13.5 billion years ago.

Rohan Naidu of the Harvard Center for Astrophysics told news agency AFP that the collection of stars – called GLASS-z13 is a galaxy that apparently dates back to 300 million years after the Big Bang.

It means about 100 million years earlier than anything previously identified. The previous oldest galaxy, known as GN-Z11, was spotted by the Hubble Space Telescope.

As quoted by AFP, Naidu said, "We're potentially looking at the most distant starlight that anyone has ever seen."

"We found two very compelling candidates for extremely distant galaxies. If these galaxies are at the distance we think they are, the universe is only a few hundred million years old at that point," he said while speaking to New Scientist.

Notably, the more distant objects are from us, the longer it takes for their light to reach us. So in order to look back into the distant universe is to see into the deep past.

Though GLASS-z13 existed in the earliest era of the universe, its exact age remains unknown as it could have formed anytime within the first 300 million years.

It s understood that the GLASS-z13 was spotted in data from the orbiting observatory's main infrared imager, called NIRcam. The discovery was, however, not revealed in the first image set published by NASA last week.

When translated from infrared into the visible spectrum, the galaxy appears as a blob of red with white in its centre.
