NASA described its plan to launch the Artemis 1 moon rocket but the launch has now been delayed. The reason is the threat of a hurricane. The tropical storm Ian has strengthened. It is expected to slam into Florida early next week with full force.

WION Fineprint: Artemis I launch delayed due to expected hurricane

Due to a tropical storm that is forecast to strengthen as it approaches Florida, NASA has delayed the launch of its new moon rocket.

The US space agency said on Saturday, "NASA is forgoing a launch opportunity... and preparing for rollback (from the launchpad) while continuing to watch the weather forecast associated with Tropical Storm Ian."

Following hydrogen fuel leaks and other technical issues, this is the third delay in the past month for the lunar-orbiting test flight featuring mannequins but no astronauts.

Weather forecasters have predicted that Tropical Storm Ian is expected to become a hurricane by Monday and slam into Florida’s Gulf coast by Thursday.

Preparing the 322-foot (98-meter) rocket for a possible return to its hangar, NASA decided Saturday to forgo Tuesday’s planned launch attempt.

In the last opportunity before a two-week blackout period, NASA could try for an October 2 launch attempt if the rocket remains at the pad.

Possibly pushing it into November, a rollback late Sunday or early Monday likely would mean a lengthy delay for the test flight.

NASA's most powerful rocket, the Space Launch System, will lead to a two-person moon landing in 2025 if its first test flight goes well.

Artemis I mission: NASA delays launch of its new moon rocket due to Storm Ian

The historic NASA uncrewed mission to the Moon is currently experiencing new challenges.

A fresh launch attempt for the Artemis 1 mission, slated for Tuesday, is now in jeopardy due to a storm that is forming in the Caribbean after two previous attempts were delayed by technical issues some weeks ago.

The storm is now south of the Dominican Republic and has not yet been given a name.

However, it is anticipated to intensify into a hurricane over the next few days and proceed northward into Florida, where the Kennedy Space Center is located and from which the rocket is scheduled to launch.

"Our plan A is to stay to course and to get the launch off on September 27," Mike Bolger, NASA's exploration ground systems manager, told reporters on Friday. "But we realized we also need to be really paying attention and thinking about a plan B."

That would entail wheeling the giant Space Launch System rocket back to the Vehicle Assembly Building, known as VAB.

"If we were to go down to Plan B we need a couple days to pivot from our current tanking test or launch configuration to execute rollback and get back into the protection of the VAB," Bolger said, adding that a decision should be made by early afternoon on Saturday.

The orange and white SLS rocket can endure wind gusts up to 137 kilometres per hour on the launch pad. However, the present launch window, which lasts through October 4, will be missed if it needs to be shielded.

From October 17 through October 31, there will be one possible launch every day, with the exception of October 24-26 and 28.

After years of setbacks and cost overruns, the US space agency will feel a great deal of relief if the Artemis 1 mission is a success. However, NASA would suffer a setback after two prior launch attempts were aborted due to technical issues with the rocket, including a fuel leak.

Another roadblock for Artemis 1; launch threatened by storm

A 170-metre (560 feet) wide asteroid named Dimorphos is about to hit the Earth on September 26 at 23.14 GMT (7.14 pm. EDT), NASA scientists have warned.

But, no worries, as the US space agency is planning to alter its course away from the Earth with its $330 million Dart robot spacecraft.

The spacecraft, which weighs around half-tonne, will be travelling at more than four miles (6.4 km) per second to collide with Dimorphos, which will be about 6.8 million miles (10.9 million km) from Earth at the time of impact.

DART, which has been designed to operate fully autonomously, will be unmanned for the mission.

Though the scientists have deemed the asteroid to be of “no threat”, the main aim of launching this mission is to demonstrate its capability in preventing any potential asteroid Armageddon.

They say that observations of the Dart spacecraft’s impact on Dimorphos’s orbit will provide crucial data about how well spacecraft can protect Earth from asteroid attack.

Lindley Johnson, the director of NASA's Planetary Defense Coordination Office, said the DART mission does not reflect a change in the policy of the space agency’s thinking about hazardous objects, rather a continuation of the work done so far.

"Our charter from the beginning has been not only to find asteroids, but to work on the technology and techniques that can be used to deflect an asteroid from an impact trajectory, should we ever find one," he told Space.com.

"DART is just a first test in what we see as an ongoing programme.”

The Italian Space Agency satellite called the Light Italian CubeSat for Imaging of Asteroids will record the first full-scale demonstration of asteroid deflection technology.

Following this, the European Space Agency (ESA) in 2024 will send its Hera spacecraft on a two-year journey to examine the aftermath of the collision.

"By the time Hera reaches Didymos, in 2026, Dimorphos will have achieved historic significance: the first object in the Solar System to have its orbit shifted by human effort in a measurable way,” the ESA said.

NASA prepares for DART mission launch as asteroid approaches Earth. Here's all you need to know

The US space agency NASA may be able to avert doomsday. The agency will be deliberately making a spacecraft collide with an asteroid to try and change the asteroid's trajectory, if successful the mission would make deviating killer asteroids away from earth possible.

September 26: NASA is all set to clobber an asteroid with spacecraft dart

NASA said Wednesday it had successfully trialed the fueling process for its new rocket, after technical issues a few weeks ago halted two attempts to get the behemoth off the ground and headed towards the Moon.

"All of the objectives that we set out to do we were able to accomplish today," said Charlie Blackwell-Thompson, launch director of the program called Artemis 1.

The unmanned mission hopes to test the new 30-story SLS rocket as well as the unmanned Orion capsule that sits atop it, in preparation for future Moon-bound journeys with humans aboard.

The last attempt in early September to launch NASA's most powerful rocket yet had to be aborted because of a leak while its cryogenic fuels -- liquid hydrogen and oxygen -- were being pumped into the rocket's tanks.

Repairs were carried out and Wednesday's test involved filling those tanks again.

Though a small hydrogen leak was detected during the test, NASA engineers were able to get it under control.

Last week NASA said it is now aiming for September 27 as the next date for liftoff. October 2 was set as a backup date.

"Teams will evaluate the data from the test, along with weather and other factors, before confirming readiness to proceed into the next launch opportunity," NASA said.

Asked about the timing of the next launch attempt, Blackwell-Thompson declined to comment, though she said she was "extremely encouraged by the test today."

US officials are also keeping a close eye on Hurricane Fiona's trajectory off the coast in the Atlantic.

For the September 27 date to be possible, NASA must receive a waiver to avoid retesting the batteries on a detonation system used to destroy the rocket if it strays uncontrollably off course.

The next mission, Artemis 2, would take astronauts to the Moon without landing on its surface, while the third -- set for the mid-2020s -- would see the first woman and person of color on lunar soil.

NASA wants to build a lunar space station called Gateway and keep a sustained presence on the Moon to gain insight into how to survive very long space missions, ahead of a mission to Mars in the 2030s.

NASA's Perseverance rover captures never-seen-before Sun Halo on surface of Mars

The first set of goals set for the US space agency's Perseverance rover on Mars are almost finished.

The NASA robot has gathered a wide variety of rock samples, which it will shortly deposit on the surface in anticipation of being brought back to Earth by subsequent missions.

The vehicle was lowered underneath a rocket crane and transported to a location known as Jezero Crater 17 months ago.

The rover is in the ideal location to look for life, as evidenced by everything "Percy" has seen since.

The hostile atmosphere on Mars makes the existence of living things there exceedingly doubtful, hence it is not searching for any of them. Instead, the robot is looking for the remnants of a biology that may have existed when Jezero was populated with a life-form billions of years ago, as reported by the BBC.

"If [Jezero's ancient] conditions existed pretty much anywhere on Earth at any point in time over the last 3.5 billion years, I think it's safe to say, or at least assume, that biology would have done its thing and left its mark in these rocks for us to observe," said David Shuster, a Perseverance mission scientist from the University of California, Berkeley.

A strategy to rescue the rock cache is being developed by NASA and the European Space Agency. Another landing mechanism, a few helicopters, a Martian rocket, and an interplanetary cargo will all be used in this bold scheme.

The samples are expected to return to Earth in 2033.

Some samples of the igneous, or volcanic, rocks that Perseverance extracted from the crater bottom will be included in the delivery. These will mostly tell the history of Jezero prior to the lake's water intrusion.

Importantly, the samples come from a form of rock that can be precisely dated. Ages on Mars may currently only be estimated indirectly.

It is the kind of geological formation that may have contained remnants of ancient microbial life.

The second portion of the cache will contain sedimentary rocks that Perseverance has recently been gathering from the delta deposits in the western section of the 45 km wide crater.

A delta is a structure formed by the silt and sand that rivers deposit as they slow down as they enter larger bodies of water.

It is the kind of geological formation that may have contained remnants of ancient microbial life.

One of the sedimentary samples came from the "Wildcat Ridge" rock, which was created when muds settled in the Jezero lake after it evaporated. It's salty to the core. However, Wildcat Ridge also contains a significant amount of organic, or carbon-rich, molecules, according to the rover's instruments.

Although intriguing, this observation has some key limitations.

Perseverance has been working on the 40-meter-high scarp that symbolises the delta's edge for the past four months.

The rock samples, in their protective titanium tubes, can be laid down on the ground on a nearby flat area of the crater floor when the robot soon drives off this slope.

Engineers at NASA have been practising how the tubes, which are presently in Perseverance's belly, will be expelled. Before sending commands to Mars to carry out the actual manoeuvres, they can practise on a full-sized replica of the rover at JPL.

NASA is anticipated to make a go/no-go decision following a meeting on October 19.

Also read | Microplastics climbing food chain through both plants and animals, says study Perseverance has been working on the 40-meter-high scarp that symbolises the delta's edge for the past four months. WATCH WION live here:

Already delayed by several years, NASA's Artemis mission is proving a tough challenge for the premier space agency. After two postponements, NASA is reportedly targeting September 27 as the next possible launch date for the unmanned mission. Reportedly, NASA informed about the date in a blog post on Monday by stating that a "70-minute launch window opens at 11:37 AM EDT on September 27" while the mission may end with an ocean splashdown of the Orion capsule on November 5. Furthermore, the space agency stated that apart from September 27, it has zeroed in on October 2 as the next date for the launch. However, the September 27 launch can only take place if NASA's engineering team can successfully carry out a test to fuel the Space Launch System (SLS). Additionally, it will require a waiver to avoid retesting batteries of the emergency flight system that detonates the rocket if it strays away from the designated path. The agency also gave an update about the repair work it had been undertaking after the failed launch due to leaks earlier this month. "Over the weekend, Artemis I teams completed repair work to the area of a hydrogen leak, reconnecting the ground- and rocket-side plates on the quick disconnect for the liquid hydrogen fuel feed line where two seals were replaced last week." read the blog post. Read more: NASA postpones Artemis I mission launch again as bid to plug hazardous leak fails As reported by WION extensively, the Artemis programme is NASA's successor to the Apollo lunar missions from fifty years ago. The only spaceflights to date to land humans on the moon's surface involved six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, during which twelve men made moonwalks. The SLS is the largest new vertical launch system NASA has created since the Saturn V rockets used in the 1960s and 1970s. However, the SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns. Read more: Artemis-1 postponements: Elon Musk has a suggestion for NASA The first woman to walk on the moon might return to Earth as early as 2025 if the first two Artemis missions are successful, according to many analysts. However, in light of recent events, that target date is likely to be pushed back by a few years. (With inputs from agencies) WATCH WION LIVE HERE:

James Webb telescope captures 'breathtaking' images of Orion Nebula. Here's why it is significant

The early days of the universe is an extremely popular topic among researchers and they have now turned towards the Small Magellanic Cloud, a satellite galaxy of the Milky Way, to decode more of its secrets. According to scientists, it has the same composition as Milky Way and that makes it perfect for a comparative study to understand the early days of our universe.

The Hubble Space Telescope found a number of young stars in the middle of a massive star cluster called NGC 346, according to Live Science. Considering the formation of new stars, the scientists concluded that the process is quite similar to how celestial bodies were formed in the Milky Way.

The conclusion was supported by the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope.

The newly formed or relatively young stars were found to be spiralling in the middle of the galaxy and the outer arm of the spiral was found to be the perfect birthing place for star formation.

The observations recorded from NGC 346 will now be applied in the studies regarding the Milky Way and it can tell us a lot about how the universe looked around 2 to 3 billion years ago.

"Stars are the machines that sculpt the universe. We would not have life without stars, and yet we don't fully understand how they form," explained study leader Elena Sabbi of the Space Telescope Science Institute in Baltimore according to Live Science.

NASA warns China as Beijing eyes same landing sites near Moon's south pole as US

NASA may have had to postpone (and postpone) launch of its Artemis mission but SpaceX, the company helmed by billionaire Elon Musk is continuing its breathtaking pace of sending its Starlink satellites in space.

Just 32 hours after NASA called off launch of Artemis-1 for the second time, SpaceX's Falcon-9 took to skies with 51 Starlink satellites. The launch took place on Sunday night (September 4). The rocket was launched from Cape Canaveral Space Force Base in the US.

The company was able to land the first stage booster rocket. This was its seventh flight.

To date, SpaceX has carried out 61 Starlink launches. This year, the company has carried out 26 launches. Starlink satellites are part of a constellation of satellites SpaceX aims to establish around the Earth. The first operational deployment took place in 2019. More than 3200 satellites have been sent to orbit till now, as per numbers tracked by astronomer Jonathan McDowell.

In 2021, Elon Musk's SpaceX won Federal Communications Commission (FCC) approval to fly 2,824 satellites at a lower orbit to provide high-speed broadband internet services to people who currently lack access.

Competitors Viasat Inc and DISH Network Corp challenged the FCC approval, but a U.S. appeals court recently upheld the FCC decision.

Viasat said it believes the "decision is a setback for both space safety and environmental protection."

While NASA struggles, SpaceX sends 51 satellites to space

NASA's Artemis mission to the Moon has been marred by delays. The launch of Artemis-1 was scheduled and delayed again and again. Billionaire and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk now has a suggestion for NASA.

At the time of the launch of Artemis-1 NASA engineers could not overcome a hydrogen leak in a 'quick disconnect' phase of the Space Launch System (SLS) rocket launch.

According to Eric Berger of Ars Technica, NASA has a tolerance for a small amount of hydrogen leakage and anything above a 4% concentration of hydrogen near the 'quick disconnect' is considered a flammability hazard.

Musk replied to Berger's 'accurate assessment', saying that "Raptor design started out using H2 (hydrogen), but switched to CH4 (hydrogen). Latter is the best combo of high efficiency and ease of operation in my opinion."

"Delta-v difference between H2 and CH4 is small for most missions, because the CH4 tank is much smaller & no insulation is needed," Musk explained.

The delta-v is the difference of velocity that a rocket engine can impose on a spacecraft as a function of the specific impulse and the variation in the mass of the vehicle itself.

According to him, CH4 (methane) is easier to produce on Mars and is "very important" for launch missions. SpaceX is among the first companies to use liquid methane and hydrogen as fuel.

Elon Musk has plans for a self-sustaining city on Mars in 20 years' time. SpaceX is preparing the Starship mega rocket to take people and cargo to the moon, Mars and beyond.

According to the report, The NASA showstopper "was an 8-inch diameter line carrying liquid hydrogen into the rocket. It sprung a persistent leak at the inlet, known as a quick-disconnect, leading on board the vehicle".

Artemis-1 postponements: Elon Musk has a suggestion for NASA

NASA's space technology is amazing, it can withstand harsh and unforgiving environments of previously untouched space. Now, one piece of technology that was developed by the space agency for its space endeavours will help ageing women deal with the effects of menopause.

National Institutes of Health (NIH) estimates that 1.3 million Americans start to experience menopause symptoms each year, which are typically characterised by hot flashes. The fluctuating temperatures that come with menopause can linger for years and can range from uncomfortable to incapacitating. NASA technology will aid in relieving these extreme symptoms.

The technology in question is called Outlast. As per the NASA website, it was developed in the 1980s when the space agency's Houston-based Johnson Space Center was looking into ways to improve insulation in spacesuit gloves.

In collaboration with Triangle Research and Development Corporation, the centre then explored "phase-change materials, which maintain a steady temperature as they change phase from solid to liquid or vice-versa."

They were successfully "able to demonstrate the effectiveness of a temperature-stabilizing fabric insert for a spacesuit glove."

However, the technology never went to space.

Now, a textile marketer named Louise Nicholson, who wanted to help people stay comfortable during menopause, will be using Outlast.

Nicholson's London-based company Fifty One Apparel has introduced "high-end fabrics" that are made "by bonding Outlast to cellulosic yarn" which helps the clothing maintain "the temperature-regulating properties of phase-change materials" while retaining "the look and feel of high-end fabrics."

The company's early offerings were limited to a line of shirts in four designs which were initially distributed to customers in the London region through parties. However, now the company has evolved to include online sales of tops, bottoms, and nightwear to people all over the world. Fifty One also offers products like turbans, facemasks, and scarves, all of which use space technology that helps menopausing women stay cool.

The fluctuating temperatures that come with menopause can linger for years and can range from uncomfortable to incapacitating. NASA technology will aid in relieving these extreme symptoms. Also read | Watch | News anchor suffers stroke on air The technology in question is called Outlast. As per the NASA website, it was developed in the 1980s when the space agency's Houston-based Johnson Space Center was looking into ways to improve insulation in spacesuit gloves. In collaboration with Triangle Research and Development Corporation, the centre then explored "phase-change materials, which maintain a steady temperature as they change phase from solid to liquid or vice-versa." However, the technology never went to space. Now, a textile marketer named Louise Nicholson, who wanted to help people stay comfortable during menopause, will be using Outlast.

The Tarantula Nebula is rapidly creating new stars, unlike the Milky Way. Even though it is close to us, it resembles the enormous star-forming areas from the early cosmos, when star formation was at its pinnacle and the universe was said to be at "cosmic noon."

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope discovered thousands of incredibly young stars in a stellar nursery known as 30 Doradus. The Tarantula Nebula has long been a favourite of astronomers researching star formation because of the appearance of its dusty filaments in earlier telescope photos.

The Tarantula Nebula is the largest and brightest star-forming region in the Local Group, the galaxies closest to our Milky Way, and is located in the Large Magellanic Cloud galaxy, barely 161,000 light-years distant. The brightest and biggest stars in the world call it home.

Three of Webb's high-resolution infrared instruments were directed at the tarantula by astronomers. The area appears to be the interior of a silk-lined burrowing tarantula's home when viewed with Webb's Near-Infrared Camera (NIRCam). A cluster of massive young stars that glow pale blue in the image has hollowed out the nebula's cavity in the centre of the NIRCam image.

Only the densest regions of the nebula's surroundings withstand erosion by the strong stellar winds of these stars, generating pillars that seem to point back toward the cluster. These pillars hold protostars that are in the process of formation; soon, they will emerge from their dusty cocoons and take turns sculpting the nebula.

One very young star was observed by Webb's Near-Infrared Spectrograph (NIRSpec) doing just that. Previously, astronomers hypothesised that this star might be a little older and now clearing out a bubble around itself.

NIRSpec revealed that the star was still surrounded by an insulating cloud of dust and that it was only just starting to escape from its pillar. This episode of star formation-in-action would not have been discovered without Webb's high-resolution spectra at infrared wavelengths.

NASA to crash spacecraft into asteroid in an attempt to change its direction

After aborting the launch of Artemis I twice within a week, NASA's latest mission to the moon remained a non-starter on Saturday as the rocket developed a large fuel leak hours before the second launch attempt.

NASA's Artemis I launch remains a non-starter, aborted for the 2nd time in a week

NASA has postponed rocket launch to moon due to hydrogen leak. Artemis 1 launch has been disrupted for second time due to leaking fuel near base of rocket. NASA is yet to announce new date of launch.

Hydrogen leak thwarts second attempt for Artemis 1 launch

The second attempt this week to launch a crew capsule into lunar orbit with test dummies had to be aborted after NASA's new moon rocket suffered another hazardous fuel leak on Saturday. Weeks or perhaps months have passed since the maiden flight.

Although they were minor, hydrogen leaks plagued the earlier attempt on Monday to launch the Space Launch System rocket, which is the most potent NASA has ever produced. On top of that, leaks discovered earlier in the year during countdown drills were discovered.

The rocket was moved off the launch pad and into the hangar for more repairs and system updates following the most recent failure, according to the mission managers. There may be some maintenance and testing done at the pad beforehand.

The rocket is currently suspended until late September or October as a two-week launch ban is about to begin. A high-priority SpaceX astronaut voyage to the International Space Station slated for early October will be accommodated by NASA.

In particular on a test mission like this, where everyone wants to validate the rocket's systems "before we send four humans up on the top of it," NASA Administrator Bill Nelson emphasised that safety is the primary priority.

“Just remember: We’re not going to launch until it’s right,” he said.

NASA has been waiting years to orbit the moon in a crew capsule atop a rocket. Astronauts could fly around the moon in 2024 and land there in 2025 if the six-week demonstration is successful. 50 years have passed since the last lunar landing.

At dawn, the Space Launch System rocket was just beginning to be filled with nearly 1 million gallons of fuel when a sizable leak in the bottom engine section emerged. Launch director Charlie Blackwell-Thompson and her team had just begun this process.

Ground controllers made an attempt to stop it by stopping and beginning the flow of extremely cold liquid hydrogen in an effort to close the breach around a supply line seal, as they had done with earlier, smaller leaks. In fact, they tried that twice, and also flushed helium through the line. But the leak persisted.

A number of little hydrogen leaks appeared in places on the rocket during Monday's attempt. Over the next few days, technicians tightened the fittings, but Blackwell-Thompson had emphasised that she wouldn't know if everything was tight until Saturday's fuelling.

Due to their extreme small size—the smallest in the universe—hydrogen molecules can escape via the smallest crack or opening. Hydrogen leaks were a common problem with NASA's space shuttles, which are now gone. The new moon rocket utilises the same main engines.

It was an even bigger issue on Monday since a sensor said one of the rocket's four engines was too warm, even though experts later confirmed it was actually cool enough. This time, the launch team was going to disregard the bad sensor and use other equipment to make sure each main engine was appropriately chilled. But the countdown was never that long.

In anticipation of witnessing the Space Launch System rocket launch, thousands of people swarmed the shore during the extended Labor Day weekend.

NASA's Artemis 1 launch ruined by a leak; next attempt weeks away

Before its debut launch, NASA’s next-generation Artemis moon rocket sprang another hazardous leak on Saturday following which the take-off was postponed once again.

"The #Artemis I mission to the Moon has been postponed. Teams attempted to fix an issue related to a leak in the hardware transferring fuel into the rocket, but were unsuccessful," NASA said in a tweet.

The rocket, which is the most powerful ever built by NASA, is 32-story tall and was due for blastoff from Cape Canaveral.

While engineers scrambled to plug what was believed to be a gap around a seal in the supply line, hydrogen fuel began leaking from the engine section at the bottom of the rocket and as a result, its launch has been postponed.

NASA postpones rocket launch to moon; Artemis 1 launch disrupted for second time

NASA is preparing for second launch of SLS rocket. However there are reports of possible fuel leak near base of rocket. NASA's 'Lunar Odyssey' in jeopardy again?

WION Fineprint: NASA's second attempt to launch Artemis 1

On the eve of a second attempt to launch NASA's massive, next-generation moon rocket on its debut test flight, ground teams at Kennedy Space Center in Florida started their final full day of launch preparations on Friday, September 2, five days after a first attempt was unsuccessful due to technical difficulties.

The moon-to-Mars Artemis programme, which is NASA's successor to the Apollo lunar missions from fifty years ago, was still on track for a Saturday (September 3) afternoon liftoff of the 32-story-tall Space Launch System (SLS) rocket and its Orion space capsule, according to NASA officials.

The SLS rocket and the Orion spacecraft, which were constructed for NASA by Boeing Co. and Lockheed Martin Corp., respectively, are making their first flights as part of the project, dubbed Artemis I.

Orion will be launched by the SLS on a 37-day, unmanned test journey around the moon and return to evaluate both spacecraft before an astronaut-carrying mission is planned for 2024.

"Before we put a crew on them, we want to make sure they work," said NASA Associate Administrator Robert Cabana, a former astronaut who commanded NASA’s Endeavour, the first International Space Station assembly mission in 1998. "One of the things we want to do is we want to make sure that the Orion spacecraft can support a crew of four for 21 days. So originally we were looking at a 42-day mission. With this new launch day, we're looking at 39 days, which is well beyond the 21-day designed operation for the Orion spacecraft. So that's going to be a stress on the system."

The first woman to walk on the moon might return to Earth as early as 2025 if the first two Artemis missions are successful, according to many analysts. However, that target date is likely to be pushed back by a few years.

The only spaceflights to date to land humans on the moon's surface involved six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, during which twelve men made moonwalks.

"The difference between Artemis and Apollo is that Apollo went to the moon and those were two or three day missions on the lunar surface," said Cabana. "We want to go back in a sustainable way. We want to plan to live on the moon, to utilize its resources and learn what we need to know to eventually go on to Mars."

Artemis relaunch preparations at Kennedy space centre for debut test flight of next-gen moon rocket

In a historic sighting, James Webb Space Telescope captured the first direct image of a planet outside of our solar system. The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) said that it is roughly six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter.

The American space agency noted that the showcased images from Webb science are in progress, and have not yet been through the peer-review process.

NASA said that the image, which is seen through four different light filters, shows how worlds beyond our solar system can easily be captured by James Webb's powerful infrared gaze.

It paves the way forward in space exploration and gives a peek into future observations that will reveal more information than ever before about exoplanets.

Sasha Hinkley, who is an associate professor of physics and astronomy at the University of Exeter in the United Kingdom, said, "This is a transformative moment, not only for Webb but also for astronomy generally." Hinkley led these observations with a large international collaboration.

James Webb, the world's largest and most complex space science telescope ever built, has captured an exoplanet called HIP 65426 b.

The exoplanet is about six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter, and NASA said that these observations could help narrow that down even further.

In the blog, NASA said that the exoplanet is young as planets go, about 15 to 20 million years old, compared to 4.5-billion-year-old Earth.

NASA's article mentioned that HIP 65426 b is about 100 times farther from its host star than Earth is from the Sun.

HIP 65426 b was discovered by astronomers in 2017 using the SPHERE instrument on the European Southern Observatory's Very Large Telescope in Chile. They took images of it using short infrared wavelengths of light.

As the name suggests, an exoplanet or extrasolar planet is a planet outside the solar system. Experts have noted that the exoplanet is a gas giant, which means it has no rocky surface and could not be habitable.

Hinkley led these observations with a large international collaboration. James Webb, the world's largest and most complex space science telescope ever built, has captured an exoplanet called HIP 65426 b. The exoplanet is about six to 12 times the mass of Jupiter, and NASA said that these observations could help narrow that down even further.
