<p>China successfully launched its first comprehensive space-based solar telescope called the Advanced Space-based Solar Observatory (ASO-S) on Sunday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The observatory has been nicknamed Kuafu-1, after a giant in Chinese mythology who wished to capture and tame the Sun, reports Sputnik quoting the China Aerospace Science and Technology Corporation (CASC).</p>

<p>It was launched using the Long March-2D carrier rocket from the Jiuquan Satellite Launch Center in northwestern China.</p>

<p>The mission which is expected to last four years will allow scientists to capture and study previously unprecedented images of the Sun during "solar maximum" or its most active phase which is expected to peak around 2025.</p>

<p>ASO-S is China's first full-scale instrument dedicated to studying Earth's closest star. As per Zhu Cheng, the chief engineer of the ASO-S platform system it is also the world's first solar telescope in space that can simultaneously monitor solar flares and coronal mass ejections.</p>

<p>Kuafu-1 will observe the Sun from an orbit 720 kilometres (447 miles) above Earth’s surface and will provide critical insights into the sun's two most violent activities.</p>

<p>China Daily reports that it would also provide data on the powerful radiation and magnetic fields generated by these phenomena and help scientists understand how these affect the sensitive equipment on Earth and in orbit equipment like satellites, electronics, power grids and internet services.</p>

<p>The mission joins the ranks of other sun-gazing space observatories launched by various countries: NASA's Parker Solar Probe, and the European Space Agency's Solar Orbiter. By next year (2023) India is planning to launch a similar mission called Aditya-L1 to study the solar atmosphere.</p>

Snoopy will not be just travelling, he's assigned to the job of zero gravity indicator on the spacecraft, and he will visually indicate when the spaceship has reached the ''weightlessness of microgravity''.&nbsp;<br />

The US space agency made the exciting announcement via a BTS video showing the whole journey of Snoopy from&nbsp;scratch.&nbsp;</p>

This was an attempt by scientists to examine the possibility of nudging any asteroids that threaten Earth in the future. They are still working to establish if they have succeeded in their endeavour and if the asteroid’s trajectory has been altered due to the crash.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It is amazing how clearly we were able to capture the structure and extent of the aftermath in the days following the impact,” said astronomer Teddy Kareta, one of many involved in the observation from the Lowell Observatory.</p>

<p>According to Michael Knight, from the US Naval Research Laboratory, the trail of debris would be monitored in the upcoming weeks and months. He added, "Now begins the next phase of work for the DART team as they analyse their data and observations by our team and other observers around the world who shared in studying this exciting event."&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientists will determine whether the mission was successful by observing the changes to the orbit of the 160-metre asteroid that was crashed by the DART probe and was named, Dimorphos, around another asteroid Didymos. The telescopes on Earth will keep an exact measure of the two-rock or binary system.&nbsp;</p>

Asteroid struck by NASA spacecraft leaves a 10,000 km trail in its wake

<p>Following a NASA launch on Wednesday, a US astronaut has become the first Native American woman in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>One of the four astronauts that took off from Florida at noon on their way to the International Space Station is Marine Colonel Nicole Mann, a 45-year-old (ISS). They were sent on a course to catch the orbiting outpost in around 29 hours by the SpaceX Falcon rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Col. Mann expressed to the BBC her hope that the mission will serve as an example for future Native American generations. Young Native American youngsters will be inspired, in her words, "to follow their dreams and realise that some of those barriers that are there or used to be there are being broken down."</p>

<p>The US space agency revealed it was preparing its next launch window for between November 12 and November 27 after being forced to delay its most recent liftoff attempt owing to the powerful Hurricane Ian that pounded Florida this week.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a blog post, NASA said that in the coming days, the team will assess conditions and necessary work and "identify a specific date for the next launch attempt". &nbsp;</p>

NASA eyes November for launch attempt of much-delayed Artemis 1 mission

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA recently celebrated the success of an experiment, which was the world's first-ever in-space test for planetary defence. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact aimed to deflect an asteroid that poses no threat to Earth. The process further modified the object's orbit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The&nbsp;space&nbsp;rock Dimorphos helped people on Earth to build the&nbsp;ability to defend themselves against a potential future life-threatening asteroid.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer".&nbsp;</p>

<p>Fitzsimmons is involved in observations with the ATLAS project. He said, "It really is quite spectacular." Notably, the observations from the space telescopes will help reveal how much matter sprayed from the asteroid, as well as the nature of its surface.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These observations are also the first time when Webb and Hubble simultaneously observed the same celestial target.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As per a report by the Guardian quoting research presented at the International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Paris last week, there are actually plus points to this.</p>

<p>One of the supporters of the Venus flyby, Dr Noam Izenberg of the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory, claimed that Venus "gets a bad rap because it's got such a difficult surface environment."</p>

<p>However, not everyone is sold on the idea.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“It’s really not a nice place to go. It’s a hellish environment and the thermal challenges for a human mission would be quite considerable,” says Prof. Andrew Coates of UCL's Mullard Space Science Laboratory.</p>

<p>Additional overnight data gathered by NASA showed Hurricane Ian can prove dangerous to the rocket due to the strong winds and heavy rain forecasts.</p>

<p>It is expected to strengthen as it heads toward Florida through the Gulf of Mexico although right now it is a Category 1 hurricane southwest of Cuba.</p>

<p>NASA will move the 98-meter (320-foot) rocket around 11:00 pm (0300 GMT) on Monday night and it will be ferried along on a rolling platform moving slowly to avoid damaging the rocket with vibrations.</p>

<p>In the hope of being able to schedule a take-off attempt just after the storm passed, NASA waited until the last minute to decide whether to shelter Artemis I.</p>

<p>According to the space agency, there will now be no opportunity for blast-off within the current launch window.</p>

<p>NASA will have two windows from October 17 to 31 and November 12 to 27 to attempt the launch of the rocket.</p>

<p>After previous launch attempts were cancelled due to the hurricane and a fuel leak, the storage decision represents only the latest setback for Artemis 1.</p>

<p>With Artemis 1 set to show the Orion capsule, the latest Moon mission comes 50 years after the final flight of the Apollo programme.</p>

<p>NASA on Monday (September 26) announced that Jupiter is making its closest approach to Earth in 59 years.</p>

<p>If stargazers look towards Jupiter in the night sky this week with their binoculars or&nbsp;telescopes, they are in for a treat as per the US space agency.</p>

<p>University of Southern Queensland astrophysics professor Jonti Horner believes that Jupiter is rising at sunset and setting at sunrise and is pretty much opposite the sun in the sky.</p>

<p>Making Jupiter appear bigger and brighter than any other time of the year, this happens once in every 13 months.</p>

<p>Since 1963, the Earth is at its closest to Jupiter which will make for an "extraordinary" view as per NASA.</p>

<p>There is 15,694 pounds (approximately 7118.6 kilogrammes) of human debris on the red planet, estimates Cagri Kilic, a postdoctoral research fellow in robotics at West Virginia University. He&nbsp;analysed the mass of all Mars rovers and orbiters before deducting the weight of those that are still in use to arrive at this estimate.</p>

<p>Scientists fear that not only is our race polluting yet another planet, even as we struggle to save ours, but that this trash could contaminate the samples being collected by NASA’s Perseverance rover and endanger the missions worth millions of dollars&nbsp;to search for signs of life on mars.</p>

<p>However, the report points out that much of the discarded parts had to be abandoned in order to preserve ships as they soar through the Red Planet's harsh atmosphere. An example of this is NASA's Perseverance, which weathered seven minutes of hell when it landed in February 2021, and also resulted in the creation of an unavoidable amount of trash.</p>

Artemis I mission: NASA delays launch of its new moon rocket due to Storm Ian

<p>The historic NASA uncrewed&nbsp;mission to the Moon is currently experiencing new challenges.</p>

<p>A fresh launch attempt for the Artemis 1 mission, slated for Tuesday, is now in jeopardy due to a storm that is forming in the Caribbean after two previous attempts were delayed by technical issues some weeks ago.</p>

<p>The storm is now south of the Dominican Republic and has not yet been given a name.</p>

<p>However, it is anticipated to intensify into a hurricane over the next few days and proceed northward into Florida, where the Kennedy Space Center is located and from which the rocket is scheduled to launch.</p>

<p>"Our plan A is to stay to course and to get the launch off on September 27," Mike Bolger, NASA's exploration ground systems manager, told reporters on Friday. "But we realized we also need to be really paying attention and thinking about a plan B."</p>

<p>That would entail wheeling the giant <a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/nasa-says-delayed-artemis-1-launch-passed-fueling-test-518567">Space Launch System rocket</a> back to the Vehicle Assembly Building, known as VAB.</p>

<p>The first set of goals set for the US space agency's Perseverance rover on Mars are almost finished.</p>

<p>The NASA robot has gathered a wide variety of rock samples, which it will shortly deposit on the surface in anticipation of being brought back to Earth by subsequent missions.</p>

<p>The vehicle was lowered underneath a rocket crane and transported to a location known as Jezero Crater 17 months ago.</p>

<p><a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/nasas-perseverance-rover-captures-never-seen-before-sun-halo-on-surface-of-mars-517486">The rover</a> is in the ideal location to look for life, as evidenced by everything "Percy" has seen since.</p>

<p>The hostile atmosphere on Mars makes the existence of living things there exceedingly doubtful, hence it is not searching for any of them. Instead, the robot is looking for the remnants of a biology that may have existed when Jezero was populated with a life-form billions of years ago, as reported by the BBC.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"If [Jezero's ancient] conditions existed pretty much anywhere on Earth at any point in time over the last 3.5 billion years, I think it's safe to say, or at least assume, that biology would have done its thing and left its mark in these rocks for us to observe," said David Shuster, a Perseverance mission scientist from the University of California, Berkeley.</p>

<p>A strategy to rescue the rock cache is being developed by NASA and the European Space Agency. Another landing mechanism, a few helicopters, a Martian rocket, and an interplanetary cargo will all be used in this bold scheme.</p>

<p>Some samples of the igneous, or volcanic, rocks that Perseverance extracted from the crater bottom will be included in the delivery. These will mostly tell the history of Jezero prior to the lake's water intrusion.</p>

<p>Importantly, the samples come from a form of rock that can be precisely dated. Ages on Mars may currently only be estimated indirectly.</p>

<p>It is the kind of geological formation that may have contained remnants of ancient microbial life.</p>

<p>The second portion of the cache will contain sedimentary rocks that Perseverance has recently been gathering from the delta deposits in the western section of the 45 km wide crater.</p>

<p>A delta is a structure formed by the silt and sand that rivers deposit as they slow down as they enter larger bodies of water.</p>

<p>It is the kind of geological formation that may have contained remnants of ancient microbial life.</p>

<p>One of the sedimentary samples came from the "Wildcat Ridge" rock, which was created when muds settled in the Jezero lake after it evaporated. It's salty to the core. However, Wildcat Ridge also contains a significant amount of organic, or carbon-rich, molecules, according to the rover's instruments.</p>

<p>Although intriguing, this observation has some key limitations.</p>

<p>The rock samples, in their protective titanium tubes, can be laid down on the ground on a nearby flat area of the crater floor when the robot soon drives off this slope.</p>

<p>Engineers at NASA have been practising how the tubes, which are presently in Perseverance's belly, will be expelled. Before sending commands to Mars to carry out the actual manoeuvres, they can practise on a full-sized replica of the rover at JPL.</p>

<p>Already delayed by several years, NASA's Artemis mission is proving a tough challenge for the premier space agency. After two postponements, NASA is reportedly targeting September 27 as the next possible launch date for the unmanned mission.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, NASA informed about the date in a blog post on Monday by stating that a "70-minute launch window opens at 11:37 AM EDT on September 27" while the mission may end with an ocean splashdown of the Orion capsule on November 5.</p>

<p>Furthermore, the space agency stated that apart from September 27, it has zeroed in on October 2 as the next date for the launch.</p>

<p>However, the September 27 launch can only take place if NASA's engineering team can successfully carry out a test to fuel the Space Launch System (SLS). Additionally, it will require a waiver to avoid retesting batteries of the emergency flight system that detonates the rocket if it strays away from the designated path.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The agency also gave an update about the repair work it had been undertaking after the failed launch due to leaks earlier this month.&nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>"Over the weekend, Artemis I teams completed repair work to the area of a hydrogen leak, reconnecting the ground- and rocket-side plates on the quick disconnect for the liquid hydrogen fuel feed line where two seals were replaced last week." read the blog post.</p>

<p>As reported by WION extensively, the Artemis programme is NASA's successor to the Apollo lunar missions from fifty years ago.</p>

<p>The only spaceflights to date to land humans on the moon's surface involved six Apollo missions between 1969 and 1972, during which twelve men made moonwalks.</p>

<p>The SLS is the largest new vertical launch system NASA has created since the Saturn V rockets used in the 1960s and 1970s.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, the SLS-Orion spacecraft has so far cost NASA at least $37 billion, which includes design, construction, testing, and ground facilities. Its development has taken more than ten years and has been plagued by years of delays and billion-dollar cost overruns.</p>

<p>"In this image we are looking at this cycle where the first generation of stars is essentially irradiating the material for the next generation. The incredible structures we observe will detail how the feedback cycle of stellar birth occurs in our galaxy and beyond," Bergin added.&nbsp;</p>
