NASA spacecraft records epic 'Marsquakes', images show debris hurled up to 40 KM

On Christmas Eve 2021, a meteor struck Mars, shaking the planet so intensely that NASA's InSight lander captured the tremblings.

Until NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, a satellite orbiting the red planet, took pictures of the fresh impact crater, scientists had no idea where the earthquake originated. On Thursday, NASA made the discovery public.

"It was immediately clear that this is the biggest new crater we've ever seen," Ingrid Daubar, InSight impact science lead, said in a press briefing. "It's about 500 feet wide or about two city blocks across. And even though meteorites are hitting the planet all the time, this crater is more than 10 times larger than the typical new craters we see forming on Mars."

A striking glow could be seen everywhere around the new crater: boulder-sized pieces of water ice that had been thrown up during the explosion from below the surface. NASA has never discovered water this close to the Martian equator. Scientists had only before observed water ice grouped close to the poles.

The finding is encouraging for NASA's goal of sending people to Mars in the future.

Their observations from those meteor hits, which were presented in two papers and published on Thursday in the journal Science, may help resolve a long-standing conundrum about the geography of Mars.

A New NASA tool is detecting 'super emitters' of Methane. The tool is designed to study the effects of dust on climate change. Watch this report.

WION Climate Tracker: New NASA tool detects 'super emitters' of Methane

More than 50 locations around the world are leaking significant amounts of methane, according to NASA scientists using a technique created to examine how dust impacts climate. This discovery could aid in the fight against the powerful greenhouse gas.

In a press release on Tuesday, NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said "reining in methane emissions is key to limiting global warming."

Researchers will be able to better identify where methane leaks are originating from thanks to this exciting new finding, which will also assist them to understand how to promptly address them.

According to NASA, the Earth Surface Mineral Dust Source Investigation (EMIT) is intended to advance knowledge of how airborne dust affects climate.

However, EMIT, which can focus on areas as tiny as a soccer field and was placed on the International Space Station in July, has also demonstrated the capacity to identify the presence of methane.

Currently known methane "super-emitters" have been found in Central Asia, the Middle East, and the southwestern United States, according to NASA. The majority of them are involved in the garbage, agriculture, or fossil fuel industries.

Roughly 30% of the current global temperature rise is attributable to methane.

Also Read: NASA shares mesmerising image of a supernova

On a century-long time frame, it is around 28 times more potent than a greenhouse gas, although being far less prevalent in the environment than CO2. It had an 80-fold increase in power over 20 years.

Unlike CO2, which can stay in the atmosphere for hundreds or even thousands of years, methane lasts about ten years.

According to the UN Environment Programme, this indicates that a significant reduction in emissions could reduce projected global warming by several tenths of a degree Celsius by the middle of the century, preserving the Paris Agreement goal of limiting the Earth's average temperature increase to 1.5C. (UNEP).

Are we alone in the universe or is there someone out there? Could there be sentient beings on some other planet? well these are questions that have left us guessing for answers for a long time. Now NASA and space agencies around the world have been peering through space to look for clues.

NASA officially embarks on 'Mission UFO', announces the team members for its study

Supernova is the actual explosion of a star! When a star reaches end of its lifetime, depending on its size, it explodes. The enrgy gets dissipated in all directions in the space. And remnants of the explosion can be seen from thousands of light years away.

NASA has shared an image of aftermath of a supernova. The image is a resplendent mosaic of colours with a backdrop of midnight-black-Space where thousands of stars are shining brightly.

The image has been clicked by NASA's Chandra X-ray Observatory telescope. The space agency has posted it on its Instagram handle.

"This composite image shows the remains of a supernova, around 9,000 light-years from Earth, in three bands of X-ray light detected by @NASAChandraXRay, with low energy X-rays in red, medium in green, and the highest in blue," NASA says in its post.

"Image description: Blank space as black as #Midnight is dotted with tiny white stars across the image. A swirling labyrinth of colours of blue, green, yellow, purple, and red makes up the center of the photo surrounding the neutron star in bright blue," NASA wrote.

NASA'S James Webb Space Telescope has broken the internet once again. This time, it is with the picture of the 'Pillars of Creation'. Priyanka Sharma brings you a report.

Gravitas: The Pillars of Creation through the eyes of NASA'S James Webb telescope

Astronomers using NASA's Hubble Space Telescope have made a unique measurement that indicates a jet, ploughing through space at speeds greater than 99.97% the speed of light, was propelled by the titanic collision between two neutron stars.

Have scientists spotted something faster than the speed of light?

NASA has confirmed that its recent mission to alter the trajectory of an asteroid using a spacecraft was successful. The US space agency conducted the Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) last month which saw the spacecraft slam into an asteroid Dimorphos.

Our beloved beagle will fly beyond the stars on his next mission with NASA. One of the most famous cartoon figures from Charles M. Schulz's comic strip 'Peanuts' is travelling to the Earth's natural satellite as part of the Artemis I mission on Orion spacecraft. This will be the first time when the little white dog is going to the Moon.

Snoopy will not be just travelling, he's assigned to the job of zero gravity indicator on the spacecraft, and he will visually indicate when the spaceship has reached the ''weightlessness of microgravity''.

The US space agency made the exciting announcement via a BTS video showing the whole journey of Snoopy from scratch.

A new image shows that an asteroid which was deliberately struck by NASA’s DART spacecraft, last week, left a comet-like trail of debris stretching thousands of kilometres. According to reports, the image was taken two days after the asteroid had been crashed into by the probe and was captured by a telescope in Chile.

On September 27, NASA indicated that they had successfully crashed the DART (Double Asteroid Redirection Test) spacecraft into an asteroid at the speed of 22,500 kph. This was an attempt by scientists to examine the possibility of nudging any asteroids that threaten Earth in the future. They are still working to establish if they have succeeded in their endeavour and if the asteroid’s trajectory has been altered due to the crash.

The image was taken two days after the collision, by astronomers in Chile using the Southern Astrophysical Research Telescope (SOAR). Reportedly, the comet-like trail goes on for more than 10,000 km and it is expected to get longer before it disperses completely.

“It is amazing how clearly we were able to capture the structure and extent of the aftermath in the days following the impact,” said astronomer Teddy Kareta, one of many involved in the observation from the Lowell Observatory.

According to Michael Knight, from the US Naval Research Laboratory, the trail of debris would be monitored in the upcoming weeks and months. He added, "Now begins the next phase of work for the DART team as they analyse their data and observations by our team and other observers around the world who shared in studying this exciting event."

The scientists will determine whether the mission was successful by observing the changes to the orbit of the 160-metre asteroid that was crashed by the DART probe and was named, Dimorphos, around another asteroid Didymos. The telescopes on Earth will keep an exact measure of the two-rock or binary system.

Following a NASA launch on Wednesday, a US astronaut has become the first Native American woman in space.

One of the four astronauts that took off from Florida at noon on their way to the International Space Station is Marine Colonel Nicole Mann, a 45-year-old (ISS). They were sent on a course to catch the orbiting outpost in around 29 hours by the SpaceX Falcon rocket.

Col. Mann expressed to the BBC her hope that the mission will serve as an example for future Native American generations. NASA eyes November for launch attempt of much-delayed Artemis 1 mission

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.

NASA recently celebrated the success of an experiment, which was the world's first-ever in-space test for planetary defence. NASA's Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART) impact aimed to deflect an asteroid that poses no threat to Earth. The process further modified the object's orbit.

The space rock Dimorphos helped people on Earth to build the ability to defend themselves against a potential future life-threatening asteroid.

Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer".

Fitzsimmons is involved in observations with the ATLAS project. He said, "It really is quite spectacular." Notably, the observations from the space telescopes will help reveal how much matter sprayed from the asteroid, as well as the nature of its surface.

These observations are also the first time when Webb and Hubble simultaneously observed the same celestial target.

NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Webb and Hubble show what we have always known to be true at NASA: We learn more when we work together."

Nelson said, "All of humanity eagerly awaits the discoveries to come from Webb, Hubble, and our ground-based telescopes – about the DART mission and beyond."

The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) has released detailed views of the DART impact after James Webb and Hubble telescopes on Thursday revealed their first images of a spacecraft being smashed into an asteroid.

ALSO READ | 'Fire in their eyes': Three Russian cosmonauts return from International Space Station Alan Fitzsimmons, who is an astronomer at Queen's University Belfast, said that the initial images showed matter spraying out over thousands of kilometres, and the James Webb and Hubble images "zoom in much closer". ALSO READ | 'Significant milestone': Hole in the ozone layer will close in the next 50 years NASA Administrator Bill Nelson said, "Webb and Hubble show what we have always known to be true at NASA: We learn more when we work together." Nelson said, "All of humanity eagerly awaits the discoveries to come from Webb, Hubble, and our ground-based telescopes – about the DART mission and beyond." NASA's Dart mission: The world's first planetary defence

In an extraordinary rehearsal for the day when a rock threatens Earth, a NASA spacecraft successfully crashed into an asteroid at breakneck speed on Monday (Sept 27).

The spacecraft, named DART, slammed into an innocuous asteroid at 22,500 kph, causing a gigantic slam to occur at 9.6 million kilometres away. The DART stands for Double Asteroid Redirection Test.

The spectacle was observed through telescopes from Earth and space pointed towards the same location in the sky. The primary goal of the collision was to change the asteroid's orbit. The scientists, however, anticipate that this crash will also create a crater and launch streams of boulders and dirt into space, AP reported.

Why is a NASA spacecraft crashing into an asteroid?

NASA on Monday (September 26) announced that Jupiter is making its closest approach to Earth in 59 years.

If stargazers look towards Jupiter in the night sky this week with their binoculars or telescopes, they are in for a treat as per the US space agency.

University of Southern Queensland astrophysics professor Jonti Horner believes that Jupiter is rising at sunset and setting at sunrise and is pretty much opposite the sun in the sky.

Making Jupiter appear bigger and brighter than any other time of the year, this happens once in every 13 months.

Since 1963, the Earth is at its closest to Jupiter which will make for an "extraordinary" view as per NASA.
