<p>As per NASA’s Perseverance Rover, which is also wandering Mars’s surface, the temperature in the planet’s Jezero Crater has only briefly risen higher than Zhurong’s lowest heat requirement.&nbsp;</p>

<p>But given that Perseverance is nearer to the red planet’s equator - located around seven degrees latitude south of its Chinese counterpart - it may be experiencing slightly more favourable conditions than Zhurong.</p>

<p>The Giant Metrewave Radio Telescope (GMRT) which is located in India’s Pune, has detected a radio signal originating from an extremely distant galaxy.</p>

<p>Astronomers from McGill University in Canada and the Indian Institute of Science (IISc) are behind the detection of these signals.&nbsp;The findings have been published in the scientific journal Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society.&nbsp;</p>

<p>With the signal travelling across the largest astronomical distance to reach us, this discovery marks a historical point in humanity’s astronomical journey.</p>

<p>“The astronomical distance over which such a signal has been picked up is the largest so far by a large margin. This is also the first confirmed detection of strong lensing of 21 cm emission from a galaxy”, said the IISc in a statement.</p>

<p>The signal reportedly originated from the atomic hydrogen of an ‘extremely’ distant galaxy. As per IISc, atomic hydrogen is the basic fuel required for star formation in a galaxy.</p>

<p>As per the information available on the IISc website, “when hot ionised gas from the surrounding medium of a galaxy falls onto the galaxy, the gas cools and forms atomic hydrogen, which then becomes molecular hydrogen, and eventually leads to the formation of stars. Therefore, understanding the evolution of galaxies over cosmic time requires tracing the evolution of neutral gas at different cosmological epochs.”</p>

<p>The radio signal was reportedly extremely weak.</p>

<p>However, it is still significant due to the fact that it is nearly impossible to detect emissions from a distant galaxy using the technology which is currently available. The telescopes currently have limited sensitivity.</p>

<p>“Until now, the most distant galaxy detected using 21 cm emission was at redshift z=0.376, which corresponds to a look-back time – the time elapsed between detecting the signal and its original emission – of 4.1 billion years,” said IISc in its statement.</p>

<p>Here, ‘Redshift’ refers to the change in wavelength of the signal depending on the object’s location and movement. Furthermore, the greater the value of z, the farther the object is.</p>

Currently, they track about 47,000 big objects in space, 27,000 of them are 10cm and larger. Sharing data about the orbital debris, Dr. Liou said that are 500,000 objects measuring 1cm or larger and over 100 million objects over the size of 1 millimetre.</p>

<p>Pointing out the hazards posed by objects measuring less than a millimetre, he said that even an object as small as 0.4 mm could penetrate some parts of the spacesuit of a spacewalking astronaut and cause serious damage to space missions.</p>

<p>Explaining why space debris of varying sizes is a constant cause of concern, Dr. Liou mentioned that the average impact speed between two orbiting objects in Low Earth orbit (up to 200 km above the earth's surface) is 10km/second. For context, that is ten times the speed of a bullet and any collision at such high impact speeds could prove catastrophic.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He said that orbital debris was not distributed uniformly in space, as Low Earth Orbit (up to 2000 km from the Earth's surface) had the highest concentration, followed by the Geosynchronous orbit (around 36,000 km&nbsp;above the earth's surface). This is explained by the highest concentration of satellites operating in low earth orbit and the rapid growth in the number of cube satellites and constellations in the last two decades.</p>

<p>As effort to scan the skies for signs of alien life continues, NASA scientists have found two exoplanets almost the size of the Earth revoving around their star in what is called 'Habitable Zone'</p>

<p>The two newly found exoplanets, designated as TOI 700 d and TOI 700 e, are revolving around a star just 100 light-years away from Earth. Both of these planets are in the habitable zone of the planet, but it is not known for sure if water is present there.</p>

<p>If a planet is too far from its star, any potential liquid, like water, freezes. If the planet is too close to the star, the liquid evaporates into space. Both these scenarios are unlikely to be conducive to formation of life. But there is a zone around any star, in which the temperature is just right for water to exist in liquid form, if it is present on that planet to start with.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Earth is in such a habitable zone around the Sun.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Apollo 7 was a magnificent step toward space, making way for the moon landing. It was also NASA's first successful crew mission since the deaths of Apollo 1 astronauts on the Kennedy launching pad in January 1967.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Cunningham, then a civilian, was one of the three astronauts aboard the 1968 Apollo 7 mission, an 11-day flight transmitting live broadcasts as it orbited Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>He crewed the mission with US navy Capt Walter M Schirra and US air force major Donn F Eisele.</p>

<p>NASA chief Bill Nelson has said that the US is currently engaged in a “space race” with China and warned that Beijing may try to exploit lunar resources for itself if it establishes a presence there first.</p>

<p>In an interview with Politico, Nelson, a former astronaut, and Florida senator, on Sunday warned that China may soon claim resource-rich areas of the Moon, and said that the next two years would determine which country gains the upper hand.</p>

<p>“It is a fact: we’re in a space race,” Nelson was quoted as saying by Politico.</p>

<p>“And it is true that we better watch out that they don’t get to a place on the moon under the guise of scientific research. And it is not beyond the realm of possibility that they say, ‘Keep out, we’re here, this is our territory.’”</p>

<p>He quoted the example of China’s aggrandisement policy with regards to the South China Sea, where Beijing has established a military presence on some of the contested islands. “If you doubt that, look at what they did with the Spratly Islands.”</p>

<p>Even as NASA has been working on its Artemis moon missions, China has been steadily gaining pace in exploring&nbsp;the vast areas of the lunar surface.</p>

<p>SWOT as per Reuters has been in development for over 20 years. It incorporates advanced microwave radar technology that according to scientists will collect height-surface measurements of water bodies (oceans, lakes, reservoirs and rivers) in high-definition detail over 90 per cent of the globe.</p>

<p>It is equipped with Ka-band frequency of microwave spectrum that will allow scanning regardless of cloud cover or darkness and thus will enable 2D dimensions irrespective of weather or time of day.</p>

<p>The project will also help enhance ocean circulation models, bolster weather and climate forecasts, and contribute to managing scarce freshwater supplies in drought-stricken regions.</p>

<p>As per the plan, the satellite will gather data over several months. The data will be compiled from sweeps that'll be done twice every 21 days.</p>

<p>"It's really the first mission to observe nearly all water on the planet's surface," said JPL scientist Ben Hamlington.</p>

<p>Collecting such data as per NASA's SWOT freshwater science lead, Tamlin Pavelsky, was akin to "taking the pulse of the world's water system, so we'll be able to see when it's racing and we'll be able to see when it's slow."</p>

<p>We know that the planet's oceans absorb an estimated 90 per cent r more of the excess heat trapped in Earth's atmosphere. SWOT aims to explore how the heat that is resultant of human activities and the greenhouse gas emissions generated from them, impacts climate change and moderates global temperatures.</p>

<p>Built by Cornell University students, the Mars rover model is an interactive exhibit that is tailored to visiting school students, features activities built around the Mars Rover and space exploration. The full-scale model has been placed at The American Center, located inside the US Consulate General in the Southern Indian city of Chennai. The exhibit is open for public viewing from Monday to Friday, between 10am to 4pm, until January 2023. Following the temporary display in Chennai, this model is expected to be placed in Bengaluru, as a permanent exhibit.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In its 14year lifespan, the rover captured more than 2.17lakh images, travelled 28 miles on the Martian surface and negotiated slopes as steep at 32degrees.</p>

<p>Launching the exhibit of the full-scale Rover model, U.S. Consul General Chennai, Judith Ravin said that “Our U.S. and Indian scientists and engineers have an opportunity to work together to change the world... We hope that the ties between our two countries in the space sector, including between NASA and ISRO, will continue to expand with future missions to Mars and beyond. We hope this exhibit will inspire students such as yourselves to explore all the opportunities that lie ahead for you in the space sector as you begin to think through what you want to study and where you work".&nbsp;</p>

<p>The European Service Module, which powers the capsule, fired its main engine for over three minutes to put the gumdrop-shaped Orion on course for home.</p>

<p>"We couldn't be more pleased about how the spacecraft is performing," Debbie Korth, Orion Program deputy manager, said later.</p>

<p>As spectacular footage flashed on their screens once communication was restored, she told a news conference, "everybody in the room, we just kind of had to stop and pause, and just really look -- Wow, we're saying goodbye to the moon."</p>

<p>Last major manoeuvre of the mission took place on Monday.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA's Artemis-1 mission began when the mega Moon rocket SLS blasted off on November 16.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA on Saturday (Nov 26), posted a beautiful picture of Pluto's real colours from its New Horizons mission on Instagram.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The space agency captioned the picture as "Small planetary body Saturday." The caption further read that the picture was captured at a distance of 22,025 miles (35,445 km) from Pluto, which also reveals the planet's enormous glacier formed of nitrogen and methane, known as "heart."</p>

A little over a week after the spacecraft blasted off from Florida bound for the Moon, flight controllers "successfully performed a burn to insert Orion into a distant retrograde orbit," the US space agency said on its website.</p>

<p>In coming years, the spacecraft will take astronauts to the Moon. This will be NASA's return to Moon after its last Apollo mission in 1972.</p>

<p>This first test flight, without a crew on board, aims to ensure that the vehicle is safe.</p>

<p>"The orbit is distant in that Orion will fly about 40,000 miles above the Moon," NASA said.</p>

<p>Flight controllers will monitor key systems while the spacecraft is in lunar orbit. They will also perform checkouts in the&nbsp;environment of deep space&nbsp;</p>

<p>Orion will take about a week to complete half an orbit around the Moon. It&nbsp;will then exit the orbit for the return journey home, according to NASA.</p>

<p>The success of this mission will determine the future of the Artemis 2 mission, which will take astronauts around the Moon without landing, then Artemis 3, which will finally mark the return of humans to the lunar surface.&nbsp;Those missions are scheduled to take place in 2024 and 2025, respectively.&nbsp;</p>

NASA’s Orion spacecraft has entered lunar orbit, to return on December 11

<p>Scientists have now found a 'super earth'. It is an exoplanet almost 10 times the size of Earth. This gigantic exoplanet is situated at a relatively small distance of 200 light years from Earth.</p>

<p>NASA's Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) has discovered the exoplanet. The exoplanet has been designated TOI-1075b. It's radius is 1.8 times that of Earth and it is believed to be rocky, not gaseous. Though the planet is rocky, its close proximity to its star means that its surface is covered with molten lava.</p>

<p>NASA announced discovery of TOI-1075b on its website on November 8.</p>

<p>"New data shows that TOI-1075b is one of the most massive super-Earths discovered so far," said NASA</p>

<p>"Super-Earths the size of TOI-1075b, models suggest, normally would be expected to have a fairly thick atmosphere of hydrogen and helium. But this planet's dense composition and scorchingly tight orbit make such an atmosphere unlikely...That makes TOI-1075 b a "keystone planet" - among only a few others so far with precise enough measurements of size and mass to help scientists fine-tune their models of planet formation," it added.</p>

<p>After the ESA filled its astronaut ranks for the first time since 2009, he will train with 11 reserves&nbsp;and five new career astronauts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>People who are completely capable of passing the ESA's customary rigorous psychological, cognitive, and other exams were invited to apply for positions last year. These individuals are only barred from becoming astronauts because of the limitations of the available hardware in light of their disability.&nbsp;</p>

European Space Agency names world's first 'parastronaut' in 'a major leap forward'

<p>NASA has said that there are currently four asteroids that are coming towards Earth with frightening speed. Some of them are travelling&nbsp;at the speed of hypersonic ballistic missiles, but few of them will not hit the earth and go flying past it, as reported by NASA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Asteroids are basically the minor planets of the inner solar system and have rocky, icy, or metallic bodies with no atmosphere. Though most of the&nbsp;asteroids look the same, their shapes and size vary significantly, ranging from 1 million rocks to a dwarf planet of almost 1000km in diameter. One such&nbsp;asteroid has already been seen flying over Earth&nbsp;in Canada recently.</p>

<p>NASA's Orion space capsule &nbsp;reached the Moon on Monday (November 21). Though it did not touch down on the surface of Earth's only satellite, it flew at an altitude of just 81 miles from the surface of the Moon. Orion whipped around the far side of the Moon which remains in dark always. This is the first time a space capsule has visited the Moon since NASA's Apollo program 50 years ago. Orion capsule represents a major milestone for NASA.</p>

<p>The close approach of 81 miles (130 km) occurred as the crew capsule and its three wired-up dummies were on the far side of the moon. Because of a half-hour communication blackout, flight controllers in Houston did not know if the critical engine firing went well until the capsule emerged from behind the moon, 232,000 miles (370,000 km) from Earth.</p>

<p>"This is one of those days that you've been thinking about and talking about for a long, long time," flight director Zeb Scoville said.</p>

<p>Orion needed to slingshot around the moon to pick up enough speed to enter the sweeping, lopsided lunar orbit. Flight controllers evaluated the data pouring back, to determine if the engine firing went as planned. Another firing will place the capsule in that elongated orbit Friday.</p>

<p>This coming weekend, Orion will shatter NASA's distance record for a spacecraft designed for astronauts ? nearly 250,000 miles (400,000 km) from Earth, set by Apollo 13 in 1970. And it will keep going, reaching a maximum distance from Earth next Monday at nearly 270,000 miles (433,000 km).</p>

<p>Orion capsule has been slated to spend nearly a week in lunar orbit. It will splash down in the Pacific Ocean on December 11.</p>

<p>Orion has no lunar lander; a touchdown won't come until NASA astronauts attempt a lunar landing in 2025 with SpaceX's Starship. Before then, astronauts will strap into Orion for a ride around the moon as early as 2024.</p>

However, it was only the beginning of the US space agency’s plan to set up the Artemis Base Camp.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA's Artemis rocket ship embarked on a voyage around the moon and back nearly five decades after the Apollo lunar mission from Florida which is aimed at getting astronauts back on the lunar surface as early as 2025 as part of Artemis-III. Along with this, the space agency also plans to construct the base camp on the Moon’s south pole.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Artemis Base Camp will also include “a modern lunar cabin and even a mobile home”, including an unpressurised rover to transport suited astronauts as well as a pressurised one to enable long treks away from the base. In the long run, NASA envisions a fixed habitat at the Artemis Base Camp that can house up to four astronauts for at least a month-long stay, said the statement.&nbsp;</p>
