French startup will take people to space in a balloon. Here's how

<p>Uranus — the seventh planet from Sun — has not just one, two or three moons, but a total of 27 moons. New research suggests&nbsp;that four of its moons&nbsp;may be hiding oceans beneath their icy exteriors.&nbsp;</p>

<p>These four moons, namely Miranda, Ariel, Umbriel, and Titania, are over 1500 km in diameter and have been studied extensively by scientists.&nbsp;</p>

<p>However, a fresh look at 40-year-old data sent to Earth by NASA's Voyager 2 spacecraft indicates that the four moons may have oceans buried kilometres deep under their surface.</p>

<p>Of these, Titania and Oberon, which orbit the farthest from Uranus, may have oceans buried some 50 kilometres (30 metres) deep. Oceans on Ariel and Umbriel, on the other hand, may be closer to the surface at 30 kilometres (19 miles) deep.</p>

<p>These astonishing findings were shared in a new study published in the Journal of Geophysical Research in December 2022.</p>

<p>Talking to Space.com, Julie Castillo-Rogez, a planetary scientist at NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California and the lead author of this study said: "Finding oceans in the Uranian moons would increase the prospect that [...] ocean worlds are frequent in our solar system, and maybe — by extension — in other solar systems."</p>

<p>The new research can help explain how even in the frigid outer reaches of the solar system, persistent internal heat and a few chemicals can make the Uranian&nbsp;moons watery worlds.</p>

<p>As per the researchers, early in their histories, Uranus' five largest moons — namely Titania, Oberon, Ariel, Umbriel and Miranda — had substantial oceans that ran deep, ranging from 100 km to 150 km (62 miles to 90 miles).</p>

<p><strong>Also read |&nbsp;<a href="https://www.wionews.com/science/saturns-vanishing-rings-further-its-cosmic-identity-crisis-589384">Saturn’s mesmerising rings vanishing, further aggravate its cosmic identity crisis</a></strong></p>

<p>"If the moons had benefited from long-term heating from their planet, then they could have maintained a thick ocean," said Castillo-Rogez.</p>

<p>Europa, a moon of Jupiter, and Enceladus, a moon of Saturn, both have significant subsurface oceans. The gravitational pull of their respective host planets causes these moons to experience deformation in their interiors and icy crusts, a phenomenon known as tidal flexing.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This process generates heat, which as per scientists, may be responsible for maintaining the subsurface water on these moons in a liquid, potentially life-supporting state.</p>

<p>However, Uranus has weaker tidal forces than Jupiter or Saturn, which means that the oceans on its four largest moons are "mostly frozen by now," according to Castillo-Rogez.</p>

<p>To gain a better understanding of the evolution of Uranus's largest moons, her team created a model using data collected from NASA missions that investigated other celestial bodies with subsurface oceans. The team examined findings from the Cassini mission, which studied Saturn's moon Enceladus, the Dawn mission, which explored the dwarf planet Ceres, and the New Horizons mission, which flew by Pluto and its largest moon Charon in 2015.&nbsp;</p>

<p>By analysing data from these missions, the team was able to construct a model of how the moons of Uranus may have formed and evolved over time.</p>

<p>The model created by the team reveals&nbsp;that the Uranian moons likely hold "thin oceans with high salt concentrations". This is likely due to limited internal heat left over from their births and considerable ammonia. The chemical is antifreeze in nature which helps keep water in its liquid form even in very low temperatures.</p>

<p>The researchers also suggest that the subsurface oceans could be habitable environments for microbial life that are adapted to living in extreme environments. They estimate that oceans would contain around 150 grams of salt per litre.&nbsp;Earth's Great Salt Lake in Utah has twice the salt volume but still boasts of life in and around it.</p>

The largest and most powerful space telescope to date is observing a serious glitch. NASA scientists have observed a sensor glitch with a James Webb Space Telescope’s key instrument. The US space agency and its partners are investigating the issue. The glitch was found during a routine performance monitoring & calibration of all 17 observing modes.

NASA's James Webb Space Telescope suffers a mysterious glitch with key instrument

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) observed a sensor glitch in a key instrument of the James Webb Telescope. The telescope was launched on December 25, 2021, and has been offering scientists unprecedented views into the universe beyond Earth. According to a report by the news agency IANS on Wednesday (April 26), NASA and its partners are investigating the problem with the telescope. The glitch was found during a routine performance monitoring and calibration of all 17 observing modes of the telescope.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Mission officials found out a discrepancy in data, and they zeroed in on a mode of Mid-Infrared Instrument's (MIRI)&nbsp;Medium Resolution Spectroscopy (MRS). The officials found that the mode was receiving less sensor throughput less than the expected amount of light -- at the longest wavelengths. No risk was seen for MIRI imaging and the instrument.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In a mission update, the officials said, "Analysis of MIRI`s Medium Resolution Spectroscopy (MRS) mode revealed that at the longest wavelengths, the throughput, or the amount of light that is ultimately registered by MIRI`s sensors, has decreased since commissioning last year."</p>

<p>The update said that no effect had been seen for MIRI imaging, and there was no risk to the instrument. "All other observation modes -- within MIRI and each of Webb`s other scientific instruments -- remain unaffected," it added.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The Webb team would continue MIRI observations as planned. The team would gather all relevant ground test and flight data to fully assess the MRS performance. Further test observations would be taken to completely characterise the nature of the issue using this particular mode of observation, IANS reported.&nbsp;</p>

James Webb Space Telescope suffers glitch, NASA launches probe

<p>A spacecraft around Mars has captured the most-detailed photographs of the planet's little moon "Deimos". According to a report by the news agency Associated Press on Monday (April 24), the United Arab Emirates (UAE) Amal spacecraft flew within 100 kilometres of Deimos on March 10. The photographs were released on Monday. This was the closest a spacecraft had been to Deimos in almost a half-century.</p>

SpaceX’s giant new rocket blasted off on its first test flight Thursday but exploded minutes after rising from the launch pad and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico.

Elon Musk’s SpaceX Starship rocket explodes mid-flight after launch

<p>Elon Musk was not very 'particulate' about the success of the mission, and a Texas city is bearing the fallout. Port Isabel, a Texas city, is bearing the fallout of the billionaire's Starship rocket launch. The SpaceX which took to the skies on Monday, before subsequently exploding, has reportedly coated the Texan city with sand dust. Not only this, as per a report by the Independent, the launch was staged in the middle of a "one-of-its-kind preserve for migratory sea birds."</p>

<p>The city is around eight kilometres or nearly five miles away from the launch site, but the distance really didn't matter in this case. Cars, homes and roads were all reportedly left covered in a&nbsp;layer of dust after the blast-off.</p>

Elon Musk was not very 'particulate' about the success of the mission, and a Texas city is bearing the fallout. Port Isabel, a Texas city, is bearing the fallout of the billionaire's Starship rocket launch. The SpaceX which took to the skies on Monday, before subsequently exploding, has reportedly coated the Texan city with sand dust. Not only this, as per a report by the Independent, the launch was staged in the middle of a "one-of-its-kind preserve for migratory sea birds." The city is around eight kilometres or nearly five miles away from the launch site, but the distance really didn't matter in this case. Cars, homes and roads were all reportedly left covered in a layer of dust after the blast-off. Musk leaves a mess...Texans try to deal with 'fallout' of failed SpaceX rocket Starship

SpaceX's Starship: World's biggest Rocket blows up minutes into inaugural test flight

A dead NASA spacecraft is set to fall from space and crash into the Earth. The dead satellite named 'Rhessi' is expected to fall this week. The American space agency revealed that the 600-pound piece of tech will reenter the Earth's atmosphere. The reentry location is not being disclosed, given lingering uncertainty over when and where it might go down. The experts are however, anticipating the debris to fall anywhere in South America, Africa or Asia.

SpaceX’s Starship, the most powerful rocket ever built, took off from a launch pad on the coast of South Texas on Thursday at 9:28 a.m. ET, but exploded midair before stage separation.

<p>Aliens have long been a fascinating subject for humans. Innumerable movies, TV series and books are proof of this allure. Our search for extra-terrestrial has even&nbsp;taken us to other planets, albeit remotely. This search has progressed leaps and bounds in the last few years, but it is still in its natal stages. Global space agencies like the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) and China National Space Administration (CNSA) have in recent years sent rovers to Mars to aid this search remotely. However, the accuracy of these random searches remains low.</p>

<p>To remedy this, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute has been exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for finding extraterrestrial life on Mars and other icy worlds.</p>

<p>According to a report on Space, a recent study from SETI&nbsp;states that AI could be used to detect microbial life in the depths of the icy oceans on other planets.</p>

<p>In a paper published in Nature Astronomy, the team details how they trained a machine-learning model to scan data for signs of microbial life or other unusual features that could be indicative of alien life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The system developed by them used statistical ecology and AI-detected biosignatures with up to 87.5 per cent accuracy, compared to only 10 per cent for random searches. As per the researchers, it&nbsp;can&nbsp;potentially reduce the search area by up to 97 per cent, making it easier for scientists to locate potential chemical traces of life.&nbsp;</p>

NASA has its sight on the Red Planet 'Mars'. NASA plans to send astronauts to Mars sometime in the 2030s. The space agency released a draft set of high-level objectives earlier this year. These identify 50 points falling under four categories of exploration, including transportation & habitation. To check the habitation of a four-person crew on Mars, NASA unveiled a new Mars simulation habitat.

Dramatic exit! James Webb captures image of cataclysmic star explosion

Asteroids frequently pass by Earth. But what will happen if an asteroid were to collide with the Earth? To emphasise the need for planetary defence. Scientists have devised an exercise in which a hypothetical asteroid 2023 PDC strikes Earth. This scenario illustrates how an asteroid threat might evolve over the years. It will also help calculate the potential devastation it could cause.

This is how scientists would react if an asteroid was to hit Earth

<p>Over the weekend, the United States space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released an image of the Crab Nebula which it said was one of the well-known as well as mysterious astronomical objects in our night sky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bright cosmic object is 6,500 light-years away, in the Taurus constellation, the image of which was captured by using NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), which launched on December 9, 2021.</p>

<p><strong>What makes this image historic?</strong></p>

<p>There is a long history behind the recently released image as the sensors which had been directed at the Crab Nebula were first launched in a sounding rocket back in 1971. However, scientists back then would first receive scientific data on a strip chart recorder, a device that printed signals on paper. For this project, astronomer Martin Weisskopf and his colleagues began their analysis on launch day by measuring the distance between signals using a ruler and pencil. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was not until a few decades later that the astronomer proposed developing a satellite with “powerful instruments” which would help them gather more detailed measurements of the Crab Nebula and other mysterious cosmic objects. This led to the creation of IXPE and now over five decades later scientists have a nuanced map of the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“What makes science so beautiful and exciting is that for those few moments, you’re seeing something that no one has ever seen before,” said Weisskopf, in a statement, who is now an emeritus astronomer at NASA. The Crab Nebula is also the result of a supernova documented in the year 1054, said the space agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The explosion left behind a dense object called the Crab Pulsar, about the diameter of the length of Manhattan with the mass of about two Suns. “The chaotic mess of gases, shock waves, magnetic fields and high-energy light and particles coming from the rotating pulsar is collectively called a ‘pulsar wind nebula,’” NASA explained.&nbsp;<br />

<p>However, the extreme conditions which resulted in this “bizarre environment” have not been thoroughly understood. Even after so many years, “every recent large telescope has pointed to the Crab Nebula to better understand this mysterious supernova remnant,” said NASA, in a statement.</p>

<p>“The Crab is one of the most-studied high-energy astrophysical objects in the sky. So it is extremely exciting that we could learn something new about this system by looking through IXPE’s ‘polarized lenses,’” said Michela Negro, a research scientist at NASA and co-author of the study.</p>

<p><strong>What did the scientists find?</strong></p>

<p>While the image of the nebula is a sight to behold it was actually the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field that the scientists wanted to understand more about. According to NASA, the map has revealed “more of its inner workings than ever before.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers observed that the magnetic field of the Crab Nebula resembles that of the Vela Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is also doughnut-shaped, however, they were surprised by how parts of the magnetic field turbulence “more patchy and asymmetrical than expected.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was the previously mentioned “bizarre environment” that Weisskopf and colleagues were hoping to understand by measuring the polarisation of X-rays from the Crab Nebula. This is because the polarisation of X-ray gives scientists clues to the direction where the magnetic field points in different parts of a cosmic object, as well as how well-ordered the magnetic field is. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“The magnetic field’s geometry and turbulence determines how particles get catapulted toward the speed of light,” said NASA. Scientists found that the areas of polarisation in the outer regions of the nebula are light-years away from the pulsar, where polarisation is lower.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This has enabled them not only to investigate the X-rays from the Crab Nebula but also those coming from the pulsar itself. “The findings suggest that those X-rays originate in the outer magnetic field region, called the ‘wind’ region, although exactly where and how is still unknown,” said NASA.&nbsp;<br />

Over the weekend, the United States space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released an image of the Crab Nebula which it said was one of the well-known as well as mysterious astronomical objects in our night sky. The bright cosmic object is 6,500 light-years away, in the Taurus constellation, the image of which was captured by using NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), which launched on December 9, 2021. What makes this image historic? There is a long history behind the recently released image as the sensors which had been directed at the Crab Nebula were first launched in a sounding rocket back in 1971. However, scientists back then would first receive scientific data on a strip chart recorder, a device that printed signals on paper. For this project, astronomer Martin Weisskopf and his colleagues began their analysis on launch day by measuring the distance between signals using a ruler and pencil. It was not until a few decades later that the astronomer proposed developing a satellite with “powerful instruments” which would help them gather more detailed measurements of the Crab Nebula and other mysterious cosmic objects. This led to the creation of IXPE and now over five decades later scientists have a nuanced map of the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field. “What makes science so beautiful and exciting is that for those few moments, you’re seeing something that no one has ever seen before,” said Weisskopf, in a statement, who is now an emeritus astronomer at NASA. The Crab Nebula is also the result of a supernova documented in the year 1054, said the space agency. The explosion left behind a dense object called the Crab Pulsar, about the diameter of the length of Manhattan with the mass of about two Suns. “The chaotic mess of gases, shock waves, magnetic fields and high-energy light and particles coming from the rotating pulsar is collectively called a ‘pulsar wind nebula,’” NASA explained. View this post on Instagram A post shared by NASA (@nasa) × However, the extreme conditions which resulted in this “bizarre environment” have not been thoroughly understood. Even after so many years, “every recent large telescope has pointed to the Crab Nebula to better understand this mysterious supernova remnant,” said NASA, in a statement. “The Crab is one of the most-studied high-energy astrophysical objects in the sky. So it is extremely exciting that we could learn something new about this system by looking through IXPE’s ‘polarized lenses,’” said Michela Negro, a research scientist at NASA and co-author of the study. What did the scientists find? While the image of the nebula is a sight to behold it was actually the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field that the scientists wanted to understand more about. According to NASA, the map has revealed “more of its inner workings than ever before.” The researchers observed that the magnetic field of the Crab Nebula resembles that of the Vela Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is also doughnut-shaped, however, they were surprised by how parts of the magnetic field turbulence “more patchy and asymmetrical than expected.” It was the previously mentioned “bizarre environment” that Weisskopf and colleagues were hoping to understand by measuring the polarisation of X-rays from the Crab Nebula. This is because the polarisation of X-ray gives scientists clues to the direction where the magnetic field points in different parts of a cosmic object, as well as how well-ordered the magnetic field is. “The magnetic field’s geometry and turbulence determines how particles get catapulted toward the speed of light,” said NASA. Scientists found that the areas of polarisation in the outer regions of the nebula are light-years away from the pulsar, where polarisation is lower. This has enabled them not only to investigate the X-rays from the Crab Nebula but also those coming from the pulsar itself. “The findings suggest that those X-rays originate in the outer magnetic field region, called the ‘wind’ region, although exactly where and how is still unknown,” said NASA. NASA issues warning over giant 150-foot asteroid that will pass by Earth on April 6

On Monday, NASA unveiled the crew for its moon mission, including the first woman & black man to voyage into deep space. The Artemis II flight is a prelude to returning humans to the moon for the first time in a half century & an eventual mission to mars. As part of the Artemis program, NASA aims to send astronauts to the moon in 2025, more than five decades after the final apollo mission. The US Space agency hopes to establish a lasting human presence on the lunar surface as a stepping stone for an eventual voyage to mars. The 10-day Artemis ii mission will test NASA's powerful space launch system rocket. It will also test the life-support systems aboard the Orion spacecraft. The first Artemis flight wrapped up in December with an uncrewed Orion capsule returning safely to earth after a 25-day journey around the moon. Only 12 people, all of them white men, have set foot on the moon.

<p>The model involves artificial intelligence (AI) to examine data from spacecraft observations of the solar wind, or the continuous stream of material from the Sun, and forecast the location of an impending solar storm anywhere on Earth with a 30 minute lead time. This might give people just enough time to prep for major solar storms and avoid serious damage to power systems and other critical infrastructure.</p>

<p>The Sun continuously releases solar material into space, both in the form of smaller, more intense bursts from solar eruptions and in a constant flow known as the "solar wind."</p>

<p>It sometimes produces so-called geomagnetic storms when this solar material interacts with Earth's magnetic environment (also known as its "magnetosphere"). These magnetic storms can have mild to severe effects, but because technology is used increasingly in our everyday lives, their effects are becoming more disruptive.&nbsp;</p>

<p>As we approach the next "solar maximum," a peak in the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, which is predicted to occur somewhere in 2025, the probability of geomagnetic storms and their disastrous impacts on our society is rising.</p>

<p>Scientists used this information to create the DAGGER computer model, also known as Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation, which can forecast geomagnetic disturbances 30 minutes in advance, globally.</p>
