<p>To remedy this, the Search for Extraterrestrial Intelligence (SETI) Institute has been exploring the use of artificial intelligence (AI) for finding extraterrestrial life on Mars and other icy worlds.</p>

<p>According to a report on Space, a recent study from SETI&nbsp;states that AI could be used to detect microbial life in the depths of the icy oceans on other planets.</p>

<p>In a paper published in Nature Astronomy, the team details how they trained a machine-learning model to scan data for signs of microbial life or other unusual features that could be indicative of alien life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Using a machine learning algorithm called convolutional neural networks (CNNs) a multidisciplinary team of scientists led by SETI's Kim Warren-Rhodes has mapped sparse lifeforms on Earth.&nbsp;Warren-Rhodes worked alongside experts from other prestigious institutions: Michael Phillips of Johns Hopkins Applied Physics Lab&nbsp;and Freddie Kalaitzis of the University&nbsp;of Oxford.</p>

<p>The system developed by them used statistical ecology and AI-detected biosignatures with up to 87.5 per cent accuracy, compared to only 10 per cent for random searches. As per the researchers, it&nbsp;can&nbsp;potentially reduce the search area by up to 97 per cent, making it easier for scientists to locate potential chemical traces of life.&nbsp;</p>

<p>For testing their system,&nbsp;they initially&nbsp;focused on the sparse lifeforms that dwell in salt domes, rocks, and crystals at Salar de Pajonales at the boundary of the Chilean Atacama Desert and Altiplano.</p>

<p>Warren-Rhodes and his team collected over 8,000 images and 1,000 samples from Salar de Pajonales to search for photosynthetic microbes that may represent a biosignature on NASA's "ladder of life detection" for finding life beyond Earth.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The team also used drone imagery to simulate Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter's High-Resolution Imaging Experiment camera's Martian terrain images to examine the region.</p>

<p>They found that microbial life in the region is concentrated in biological hotspots that strongly relate to the availability of water.</p>

<p>Researchers suggest that the machine learning tools developed can be used in robotic planetary missions like NASA's Perseverance Rover. The tools can guide rovers towards areas with a higher probability of having traces of alien life, even if they are rare or hidden.&nbsp;</p>

<p>"With these models, we can design tailor-made roadmaps and algorithms to guide rovers to places with the highest probability of harbouring past or present life  — no matter how hidden or rare," explained Warren-Rhodes.&nbsp;</p>

<p>After a successful NASA study examining the possibility of providing fresh food for future astronauts, tomatoes grown on the International Space Station (ISS) will return to Earth over the weekend.</p>

<p>On April 15, samples from a NASA mission using SpaceX's commercial resupply services will return from the International Space Station, as reported by Metro News.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The scientific samples will be transported to NASA's Kennedy Space Centre in Florida after splashdown so that researchers can undertake additional analyses there before the full effects of gravity begin to manifest.</p>

<p>In addition to the pre-packaged crew meals, future crewed exploration missions, like those to Mars, might need a fresh food supply.</p>

<p>In order to investigate the effects of light quality and fertiliser on fruit production, microbiological safety, and nutritional value, the Veg-05 experiment produced dwarf tomatoes in the station's ‘Veggie’&nbsp;facility.</p>

<p>The ‘Veggie’&nbsp;vegetable-production system on the ISS gives&nbsp;an opportunity to develop a ‘pick-and-eat’ fresh vegetable component to food on the space station.</p>

<p>The James Webb Space Telescope recently captured one of the dramatic exits of stars in space, as they exploded to form supernovae.</p>

<p>The details of the Cassiopeia A, which was the remnant of one such explosion of stars, were clearly captured by the telescope.</p>

<p>Cassiopeia A, also known as Cas A, is one of the stellar explosions that took place happened 340 years ago.</p>

<p>As per NASA, Cas A is the youngest remnant ever found of a massive supernova present in a galaxy. The supernova remnant's mid-infrared image which was captured by Webb gives astronomers a view of how such explosions took place.</p>

<p>“Compared to previous infrared images, we see the incredible detail that we haven’t been able to access before,” stated Tea Temim who works at Princeton University, New Jersey.</p>

<p>Temim has been working as the Web programme's co-investigator and was involved in capturing the images. Cas A was widely studied in different observatories by other telescopes which included the Chandra X-ray Observatory and NASA’s Hubble Telescope.</p>

<p>However, the new mid-infrared images which were clicked by Webb hold a huge amount of new scientific information.</p>

<h2><strong>Cassiopeia A – the answer to the origin of life</strong></h2>

<p>NASA said that Cas A can help scientists find the origin of cosmic dust. This discovery is important because cosmic dust is the building of what becomes planets, stars and eventually, life.</p>

<p>It has been revealed in scientific observations that cosmic dust permeates even the young galaxies present in the early universe.</p>

<p>Supernovae like Cas A release huge amounts of heavy elements across space. These heavy elements make up cosmic dust and, therefore, it is difficult to explain the cosmic dust's origin without attributing it to some supernovae.</p>

<p>The problem that astronomers encounter is that they do not explain the amount of dust they see in the early galaxies on the basis of current observations of supernovae.</p>

<p>Scientists hope that they may get some clarity on the amount of dust present through Cas A which has been captured by the James Webb Space Telescope.</p>

<p>As per Temim, regions of supernovae like Cas A can be spatially resolved by the researchers to study the different gas compositions and understand the types of dust formed in those regions.</p>

<p>It is important to study Cas A and other similar supernovae to understand the origin of life. Elements like iron and calcium which are present in space are spread across interstellar space through supernovae, and provide the seeds for new planets and stars.&nbsp;</p>

This discovery is important because cosmic dust is the building of what becomes planets, stars and eventually, life. It has been revealed in scientific observations that cosmic dust permeates even the young galaxies present in the early universe. Scientists hope that they may get some clarity on the amount of dust present through Cas A which has been captured by the James Webb Space Telescope. As per Temim, regions of supernovae like Cas A can be spatially resolved by the researchers to study the different gas compositions and understand the types of dust formed in those regions. It is important to study Cas A and other similar supernovae to understand the origin of life. Elements like iron and calcium which are present in space are spread across interstellar space through supernovae, and provide the seeds for new planets and stars. <p>Over the weekend, the United States space agency, National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) released an image of the Crab Nebula which it said was one of the well-known as well as mysterious astronomical objects in our night sky.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The bright cosmic object is 6,500 light-years away, in the Taurus constellation, the image of which was captured by using NASA’s Imaging X-ray Polarimetry Explorer (IXPE), which launched on December 9, 2021.</p>

<p><strong>What makes this image historic?</strong></p>

<p>There is a long history behind the recently released image as the sensors which had been directed at the Crab Nebula were first launched in a sounding rocket back in 1971. However, scientists back then would first receive scientific data on a strip chart recorder, a device that printed signals on paper. For this project, astronomer Martin Weisskopf and his colleagues began their analysis on launch day by measuring the distance between signals using a ruler and pencil. &nbsp;&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was not until a few decades later that the astronomer proposed developing a satellite with “powerful instruments” which would help them gather more detailed measurements of the Crab Nebula and other mysterious cosmic objects. This led to the creation of IXPE and now over five decades later scientists have a nuanced map of the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“What makes science so beautiful and exciting is that for those few moments, you’re seeing something that no one has ever seen before,” said Weisskopf, in a statement, who is now an emeritus astronomer at NASA. The Crab Nebula is also the result of a supernova documented in the year 1054, said the space agency.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The explosion left behind a dense object called the Crab Pulsar, about the diameter of the length of Manhattan with the mass of about two Suns. “The chaotic mess of gases, shock waves, magnetic fields and high-energy light and particles coming from the rotating pulsar is collectively called a ‘pulsar wind nebula,’” NASA explained.&nbsp;<br />

<p>“The Crab is one of the most-studied high-energy astrophysical objects in the sky. So it is extremely exciting that we could learn something new about this system by looking through IXPE’s ‘polarized lenses,’” said Michela Negro, a research scientist at NASA and co-author of the study.</p>

<p><strong>What did the scientists find?</strong></p>

<p>While the image of the nebula is a sight to behold it was actually the Crab Nebula’s magnetic field that the scientists wanted to understand more about. According to NASA, the map has revealed “more of its inner workings than ever before.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>The researchers observed that the magnetic field of the Crab Nebula resembles that of the Vela Pulsar Wind Nebula, which is also doughnut-shaped, however, they were surprised by how parts of the magnetic field turbulence “more patchy and asymmetrical than expected.”&nbsp;</p>

<p>It was the previously mentioned “bizarre environment” that Weisskopf and colleagues were hoping to understand by measuring the polarisation of X-rays from the Crab Nebula. This is because the polarisation of X-ray gives scientists clues to the direction where the magnetic field points in different parts of a cosmic object, as well as how well-ordered the magnetic field is. &nbsp;</p>

<p>“The magnetic field’s geometry and turbulence determines how particles get catapulted toward the speed of light,” said NASA. Scientists found that the areas of polarisation in the outer regions of the nebula are light-years away from the pulsar, where polarisation is lower.&nbsp;</p>

<p>This has enabled them not only to investigate the X-rays from the Crab Nebula but also those coming from the pulsar itself. “The findings suggest that those X-rays originate in the outer magnetic field region, called the ‘wind’ region, although exactly where and how is still unknown,” said NASA.&nbsp;<br />

What is special about this is that in what could've been a tussle with two other black holes, this supermassive black hole was ejected from its own galaxy. Additionally, its trail of infant stars is an astounding 200,000 light-years long chain. This "contrail" of newborn starts as per Science Daily is twice the diameter of our Milky Way galaxy.</p>

<p>The black hole is huge — it has a mass equivalent to around 20 million suns — and is travelling a such a breakneck speed that it can cover the 382,500 kilometres distance between our planet Earth and its moon in just 14 minutes.</p>

<p>Black holes are notorious for gobbling up stars in their wake, but this one is different. It is moving too fast to act like a "cosmic Pac-Man" and snack on whatever crosses its path. Instead, as per Science Daily, it is "plowing into gas in front of it to trigger new star formation along a narrow corridor," which is forming its trail of newborn stars.</p>

<p>This unique behaviour has astounded scientists who say that nothing like this has ever been seen before.</p>

<p>Talking about the discovery, Pieter van Dokkum of Yale University in New Haven, Connecticut, said: "What we're seeing is the aftermath. Like the wake behind a ship we're seeing the wake behind the black hole."&nbsp;</p>

<p>Reportedly, the trail is almost half as bright as the host galaxy it is linked to. This means it must have lots of new stars.</p>

<p>"This is pure serendipity that we stumbled across it," adds Dokkum.</p>

<p>Astronomers believe that this astounding phenomenon is the result of multiple collisions of three supermassive black holes, two of which must have collided around 50 million years ago. This collision would have created a binary black hole.</p>

<p>'Two's company and three's a crowd," when another blackhole joined the mix, it created a chaotic and unstable configuration and one of the three was thrown out. The single black hole travelled in one direction, the pair in another. As per the astronomers, this could be deduced by circumstantial evidence; there is no active black hole remaining in that galaxy's centre. To confirm these theories, they will now conduct follow-up observations with NASA's James Webb Space Telescope and the Chandra X-ray Observatory. NASA's upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope might also provide some insight.</p>

<p>2023 FU6, which is a small 45-foot asteroid, will be at a distance of 1,870,000 km from Earth today. Asteroid 2023 FS11 which is an 82-foot asteroid will pass across the Earth by a margin of 6,610,000 km today.</p>

<p>Asteroid 2023 FA7, which is 92 feet, will fly near the Earth on April 4 at a distance of 2,250,000 km. Asteroid 2023 FQ7, which is a 65-foot house-sized asteroid, will approach the Earth on April 5.</p>

<p>Comets and asteroids, which are likely to make comparatively close approaches to Earth, are being tracked by NASA's Asteroid Watch dashboard.</p>

NASA issues warning over giant 150-foot asteroid that will pass by Earth on April 6

On Monday, NASA unveiled the crew for its moon mission, including the first woman & black man to voyage into deep space. The Artemis II flight is a prelude to returning humans to the moon for the first time in a half century & an eventual mission to mars. As part of the Artemis program, NASA aims to send astronauts to the moon in 2025, more than five decades after the final apollo mission. The US Space agency hopes to establish a lasting human presence on the lunar surface as a stepping stone for an eventual voyage to mars. The 10-day Artemis ii mission will test NASA's powerful space launch system rocket. It will also test the life-support systems aboard the Orion spacecraft. The first Artemis flight wrapped up in December with an uncrewed Orion capsule returning safely to earth after a 25-day journey around the moon. NASA posts beautiful image of a celestial object far far away

<p>A massive black hole has been spotted by space agency NASA on the Sun, which is 20 times bigger than the Earth and can blast powerful solar storms towards the planet, as per reports.</p>

<p>The region named "coronal hole" looks like the empty space on the Sun's surface. After spotting the hole, an alert was issued by US federal agency National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) for geomagnetic storms.</p>

<p>The “coronal hole” is not exactly a hole but a wide region which is comparatively cooler than the rest of the Sun's surface and hence, is appearing black.</p>

<p>“Coronal holes are magnetically open areas that are one source of high-speed solar wind. They appear dark when viewed in many wavelengths of extreme ultraviolet light. At times, the solar wind can generate aurora at higher latitudes on Earth,” NASA explained.</p>

<p>According to a report published by news.com.au, solar winds of 2.9 million kmph are being unleashed by the gaping hole towards Earth, which may hit our planet on Friday (March 31).</p>

<p>Scientists are monitoring the situation to asses how these solar winds will impact our planet, the report said. Charged particles, which continuously flow from the Sun, impact the satellites, GPS, magnetic field and mobile phones on the Earth.</p>

<p>NASA's Solar Dynamics Observatory (SDO) discovered the coronal hole on March 23 near the Sun's South Pole. "The current coronal hole, the big one right now, is about 300,000 to 400,000 kilometres across. That is about 20-30 Earths lined up back-to-back," said Alex Young, who works at NASA Goddard's Heliophysics Science Division, while speaking to Business Insider.</p>

<h2><strong>Solar storm may hit Earth</strong></h2>

<p>University College London's Associate Professor of Space and Climate Physics Daniel Verscharen said that Earth may be hit by a geomagnetic storm which is coming towards the planet at a speed of about 1.8 million miles per hour.</p>

<p>“The shape of this coronal hole is not particularly special. However, its location makes it very interesting. I would expect some fast wind from that coronal hole to come to Earth around Friday night into Saturday morning of this week," he stated.</p>

<p>As we approach the next "solar maximum," a peak in the Sun's 11-year activity cycle, which is predicted to occur somewhere in 2025, the probability of geomagnetic storms and their disastrous impacts on our society is rising.</p>

<p>Scientists used this information to create the DAGGER computer model, also known as Deep Learning Geomagnetic Perturbation, which can forecast geomagnetic disturbances 30 minutes in advance, globally.</p>

<p>The crew will begin living in their Martian home in June this year as the most accurate data is collected by the teams during the analogue mission</p>

<p>"During the simulation, crew members will carry out different types of mission activities, including simulated spacewalks, robotic operations, habitat maintenance, personal hygiene, exercise, and crop growth," said NASA in a statement.</p>

<p>The volunteers will face environmental stressors like isolation, resource limitations, and equipment failure along with a significant workload so as to experience all possible situations the humans may have to face when they actually arrive on Mars.</p>

<p>"The major crew activities during the analogue may consist of simulated spacewalks including virtual reality, communications, crop growth, meal preparation and consumption, exercise, hygiene activities, maintenance work, personal time, science work, and sleep," said NASA in its mission brief.</p>

<p>The volunteers will spend their time remotely operating robotic elements which will be important for real crews during their Mars expedition to extend their exploration capabilities. They will also be given the responsibility of controlling a roving robot and a helicopter-like drone.</p>

While they are commencing the analogue mission this year, they will conduct the second mission in 2025 which will be followed up by a third mission in 2026.</p>

<p>“We’re really looking at how the crew performance and health changes based on realistic Mars restrictions and the lifestyle of the crew members. So, the lifestyle is what we're trying to simulate by setting up a realistic environment and workload for the CHAPEA crew,” said Raina MacLeod, CHAPEA deputy project manager.</p>

A real-life Martian? Four humans to start 'living on Mars'

The eerie but beautiful image has been clicked by NASA's Perseverance rover which is still scouring the Martian surface to make its observations and search for signs of possible life on the planet.</p>

<p>Millions of years ago, Mars has oceans on its surface and possibly life. When the water on Mars started drying up, microbial life may have survived in moist soil and clay at the bottom of lakes before being wiped out.</p>

<p>Perseverance is searching for signs of this.</p>

NASA's Perseverance rover sends eerie photo of dawn on Mars

<p>Looking at NASA's social feeds is a constant dose of amazement and wonder. With its thousands of telescopes, satellites and more, the space agency provides a steady trickle of breathtakingly beautiful pictures from space. And while it remains glued to the endless expanse of the space, it at times turns its lenses on our home planet as well.</p>

<p>NASA has now shared the image of 'night lights' on the Earth. The light emitted by human settlements across the globe is discernible from space as well, and NASA has clicked image of the dark side of the Earth to reveal how beautiful a thing this can be to behold!</p>

<p>"This image of Earth at night provides a clear view of the patterns of human settlements across our planet...," says NASA in its Instagram post.</p>

<p>"...Satellite images of Earth at night – often referred to as “night lights” – provide a broad beautiful picture showing how humans shaped the planet and lit up the darkness..."</p>

<p>It is almost possible to pinpoint cities and regions. If you take a look at north Africa, the densely populated strip along the Nile river is clearly visible. European cities dot the landscape further above. While in the east, India shines with its network of cities, all emitting a resplendent light into the sky.</p>

NASA captures beautiful ‘night lights’ cast in space by our cities

<p>It's the holiest month of the Islamic calendar, Ramadan, when Muslims across the globe will be observing fast, even in space. Yes, you read it right. UAE astronaut Sultan al-Neyadi arrived at the space station on March 3&nbsp;and the only question boggling him is how will he be ending his fast, as he sees 16 sunsets daily at the space station.<br />

You must be wondering why 16.&nbsp;Here, is the answer.<br />
<br />
For centuries, a setting sun has signalled the end of fasting with delicious meals. But what if the sun's clockwork changes as it does for astronauts riding aboard the International Space Station? The orbiting laboratory whips around the Earth at the speed of 27,600 kilometres per hour (27,600 miles per hour) giving the traveller 16 sunrises and sunsets each day. Dizzy right? Well, it's true.&nbsp;</p>

<p><b>'It's not compulsory'</b></p>

<p>Sultan al-Neyadi is one of the few Muslim astronauts who have travelled to space, and his mission will end in five months. He then will be the first astronaut from UAE to complete a long-duration stay in space.&nbsp;</p>

<p>While al-Neyadi is in space, Muslims on Earth will be observing fast in Ramadan and till the time he'll return, they will celebrate two festivals — Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha.</p>

<p>At a press conference before his space travel, al-Neyadi had said that six months is a long duration for a mission, which is a great responsibility. He added that since an 'astronaut' fits in the definition of &nbsp;'traveller,' it excuses him from fasting during Ramadan.<br />
<br />
"It's not compulsory if you're sick. So in that regard — anything that can jeopardise the mission or maybe put the crew member at risk — we’re actually allowed to to eat sufficient food to prevent any escalation of lack of food or nutrition or hydration."</p>

<p>He added that he'll wait and see how it goes.&nbsp;</p>

<p><strong>Religion in Space:</strong></p>

<p>Back in 1968, during NASA's Apollo 8 mission, astronauts read Genesis, the first book of the Bible, on their way to orbit the moon. Buzz Aldrin, who was with Neil Armstrong during their first landing in 1969 also took communion from the Eagle lunar lander, by taking a sip of wine and a bite of bread blessed by a Presbyterian minister back in Houston, just before taking their first steps on the moon.&nbsp;</p>

<p>In 2007, Sheikh Muszaphar Shukor, a Malaysian astronaut became the first practising Muslim to stay on the International Space Station and the Islamic National Fatwa Council of Malaysia issued special guidelines for him and other future Muslim astronauts.&nbsp;</p>

<p>The council also said that though his flight coincided with Ramadan, he can postpone until he returned to Earth or he could fast&nbsp;in accordance with the time zone of the place from which he had launched.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Among other religious observances that have taken place on board, include&nbsp;Christmas celebrations, Jewish holidays and Hanukkah.&nbsp;<br />

He added that since an 'astronaut' fits in the definition of 'traveller,' it excuses him from fasting during Ramadan. "It's not compulsory if you're sick. So in that regard — anything that can jeopardise the mission or maybe put the crew member at risk — we’re actually allowed to to eat sufficient food to prevent any escalation of lack of food or nutrition or hydration." The council also said that though his flight coincided with Ramadan, he can postpone until he returned to Earth or he could fast in accordance with the time zone of the place from which he had launched. <p>A new analysis of the perspective of the orbiter of a region close to the Venusian equator revealed a volcanic vent which changed shape and increased in size in the period of eight months.</p>

<p>The images of the volcanic vent have become the first direct geological evidence found of recent volcanic activity on Venus, as per the researchers.</p>

<p>On Wednesday, a study detailing the recent findings was published in the journal Science and the researchers presented it at the 54th Lunar and Planetary Science Conference in The Woodlands, Texas.</p>

<p>The Magellan mission was the first one to take pictures of the entire surface of the planet before the spacecraft was plunged intentionally into the hot, toxic atmosphere of Venus in 1994 to gather a final set of data.</p>

<p>Now, a fleet of new missions will be sent to Venus within 10 years, which includes the Venus Emissivity, VERITAS, Radio Science, InSAR, Topography, and Spectroscopy mission.</p>

<p>“NASA’s selection of the VERITAS mission inspired me to look for recent volcanic activity in Magellan data,” said Robert Herrick, lead study author, member of the VERITAS science team and research professor at the University of Alaska Fairbanks, in a statement.</p>

<p>“I didn’t really expect to be successful, but after about 200 hours of manually comparing the images of different Magellan orbits, I saw two images of the same region taken eight months apart exhibiting telltale geological changes caused by an eruption,” he added.</p>

<p>The changes in the images of Atla Regio, which is a vast highland region and has the two largest volcanoes of Venus called Ozza Mons and Maat Mons, were spotted by Herrick.</p>

<p>“Both are similar to Earth’s largest volcanoes, but because they have lower slopes, the two Venusian volcanoes are more spread out,” he said.</p>

<p>“Only a couple of the simulations matched the imagery, and the most likely scenario is that volcanic activity occurred on Venus’ surface during Magellan’s mission. While this is just one data point for an entire planet, it confirms there is modern geological activity,” said Scott Hensley, project scientist for VERITAS.</p>

<p>Engineers at the launch event demonstrated that the new lunar gear would allow astronauts to be more mobile. The large, clear bubble around the head will provide wide visibility to the astronauts, which may come in handy on the dark, shadowy craters of the Earth's satellite.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA said the suit, unlike its predecessors, will accommodate at least 90 per cent of the US male and female population.&nbsp;</p>

<p>“This is going to be such a much more flexible suit, and the range of motion is really going to improve the astronauts’ ability to do all the tasks that they’re going to do while they’re out exploring on the lunar surface,” said&nbsp;Peggy Whitson, a former NASA Astronaut who will be visiting International Space Station later this year onboard a private flight.&nbsp;</p>

In a rare capture, NASA’s James Webb telescope clicks star on cusp of death

<p>The National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) on Tuesday announced that it has&nbsp;picked US-based rocket builder Firefly Aerospace for an important $112 million contract. The NASA contract is for the delivery of multiple lunar payloads to the far side of the moon in 2026. It is part of NASA's efforts to put humans on the moon.</p>

<p>As per the Firefly Aerospace website, this is the second task the firm has won under NASA's&nbsp;Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) initiative.</p>

<p>To fulfill its contractual obligations, Firefly, as per the company website, will use its "Blue Ghost spacecraft in a two-stage configuration to first place a satellite into lunar orbit and then deliver two research payloads on the far side of the Moon."</p>

<p>"This mission will debut Firefly’s unique two-stage Blue Ghost spacecraft, offering NASA and other customers multiple deployment options as we collectively build the infrastructure for ongoing lunar operations and planetary exploration," said the rocket maker in a statement.</p>

NASA awards Firefly Aerospace $112mn contract to deliver crucial payloads to far side of moon

<p>The launch of the world's first 3D-printed rocket had to be cancelled at the last minute again. The launch which was scheduled for Saturday was aborted after it encountered an "automation issue". At 110 feet tall and 7.5 feet wide, the 9,280 kg Terran 1 rocket is the world's largest 3D-printed object to attempt an orbital flight. As per an AFP report, the engine of the unmanned Terran 1 had begun igniting, when the rocket faced the issue which ultimately led to its takeoff being aborted for the second time in less than a week.</p>

<p>Space Relativity, the start-up behind the 3D-printed rocket, also made a second attempt to launch the rocket but had to abort due to pressure issues in the rocket's second stage.</p>

<p>"The team went HARD today and we intend to do so during our next attempt. More to come on the new launch date," said the company in a tweet.</p>

<p>An earlier launch scheduled for last Wednesday (March 8th) was postponed over last-minute propellant temperature issues.</p>

<p>The payload of the NASA-ISRO Synthetic Aperture Radar(NISAR) imaging satellite arrived in Bengaluru, on a US Air Force C17 Globemaster III strategic airlift plane.</p>

<p>The satellite payload that was flown in from NASA Jet Propulsion Laboratory in California, will be taken to India's UR Rao Satellite Center in Bengaluru, where the payload will be integrated into the satellite bus (structure) and undergo further testing.</p>

<p>In February, top officials from ISRO and NASA conducted the ceremonial flagging off for the satellite payload from JPL, California. The announcement of the satellite having arrived in India was shared by the US Consulate General, Chennai.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA-ISRO SAR (NISAR) is a Low Earth Orbit (LEO) observatory jointly developed by the American and Indian space agencies. It is meant to carry L and S, dual-band Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR), a highly powerful, all-weather, day and night means of imaging from space, that can help researchers and scientists observe minute changes in Earth’s land and ice surfaces, down to fractions of an inch.</p>

<p>Since early 2021, engineers and technicians at JPL have been integrating and testing NISAR’s two radar systems – the L-band SAR provided by JPL and the S-band SAR built by ISRO.&nbsp;</p>

<p>JPL, which is managed for NASA by Caltech in Pasadena, leads the U.S. component of the project and is providing the mission’s L-band SAR. NASA is also providing the radar reflector antenna, the deployable boom, a high-rate communication subsystem for science data, GPS receivers, a solid-state recorder, and payload data subsystem.</p>

<p>ISRO is providing the spacecraft bus, the S-band SAR, the launch vehicle, and associated launch services and satellite mission operations.</p>

<p>NISAR will gather radar data with a drum-shaped reflector antenna almost 40 feet (12 metres) in diameter. It will use a signal-processing technique called interferometric synthetic aperture radar, or InSAR, to observe changes on Earth, which can be used to predict natural disasters, and track climate change.</p>

<p>"The observations NISAR makes will help researchers measure the ways in which Earth is constantly changing by detecting both subtle and dramatic movements. Slow-moving variations of a land surface can precede earthquakes, landslides, and volcanic eruptions, and data about such movement could help communities prepare for natural hazards. Measurements of melting sea ice and ice sheets will improve understanding of the pace and impacts of climate change, including sea level rise" said NASA.&nbsp;</p>

<p>Over the course of its three-year prime mission, the satellite will observe nearly the entire planet every 12 days, making observations day and night, in all weather conditions. “Today, we come one step closer to fulfilling the immense scientific potential NASA and ISRO envisioned for NISAR when we joined forces more than eight years ago,” Chairman, ISRO, Dr. S. Somanath had said earlier.</p>

<p>During the flag-off ceremony, JPL Director, Laurie Leshin said, "By delivering measurements at unprecedented precision, NISAR’s promise is a new understanding and positive impact in communities. Our collaboration with ISRO exemplifies what’s possible when we tackle complex challenges together."</p>

<p>With the SUV-sized satellite payload having arrived on Indian soil in a special cargo container, after a 9,000-mile(14,000-kilometer) flight, the key responsibilities will henceforth be carried out by ISRO. The NISAR satellite is expected to be launched in early 2024 from India's Satish Dhawan Space Centre in Andhra Pradesh state, on board a GSLV rocket.&nbsp;</p>

<p>NASA took to Twitter to share a glimpse of the scenes captured by the rover. In the photo, patches of red and green light fill the grey sky on the rocky black landscape. The view was captured by the rover as the sun illuminated the cumulous clouds while descending over the horizon.</p>

<p>The “sun rays” captured are also called crepuscular rays, which is derived from the Latin word for “twilight”. The Martian rover captured the image while conducting the twilight cloud survey. The image will add to its 2021 observations of noctilucent, or night-shining clouds.</p>

<p>“Where we see iridescence, it means a cloud’s particle sizes are identical to their neighbours in each part of the cloud. By looking at colour transitions, we’re seeing particle size changing across the cloud. That tells us about the way the cloud is evolving and how its particles are changing size over time,” said Mark Lemmon, an atmospheric scientist, in a statement.</p>
